President’s Column
Summer events are around the corner St. Louis Track Club Members, Greetings Track Club Members! The St. Louis heat and humidity are on the horizon as spring comes down the final stretch. For those who toed the line this spring, I hope you were able to achieve your goals. Speaking of racing, I’m currently enjoying the Tweets and updates on some of the local student athletes at the MO State Track and Field meet. Hope some local schools are able to bring home some hardware! Coming this summer, we have a couple of fun and social events to go along with our Pace Series (Wednesdays starting June 3rd) and Marathon Training (Saturdays starting June 20th). First, we will continue to have our monthly social runs at Schlafly Bottleworks or Tap Room. It’s been great to hang out and spend some time with some of the members; I hope to see everyone June 15th at Schlafly Bottleworks for the quarterly open board meeting! Additionally, we are having a Scavenger Hunt/ Run on June 28th through Forest Park, with our volunteers’ celebration to follow at Felix’s at 7 p.m. This is something new we are pretty excited about
and hope we can get a lot of members to compete! As always, check the website for details and sign-up for all events. Well that’s all I have for now, enjoy a pic of me with my favorite Track Club member! Until next time, keep putting one foot in front of the other! U-City Memorial Day run continues longstanding tradition
a nonprofit.”
The 41st University City Memorial Day Run saw crisp, sunny weather, which most people thought ideal for running. The run originated in 1974, when a few friends who enjoyed jogging decided it would be fun to organize a road race for their community. The University City Memorial Day Run, one of the first running events in the Saint Louis area, has been held each May on the Monday of Memorial Day weekend, and has been a staple of the St. Louis running calendar. Overall winners this year for the 10k were Tim Probst (35:06) and Anna Jones (44:00). Overall 5k winners were Trent Evans (16:45) and Bridget Dillon (21:10). “We had almost 1,400 entrants in one or more of Memorial Day’s events,” said Linda Ballard, board member of the race committee. “Questionable weather leading into the day made the organizers nervous, but in the end, the weather was perfect. The day kicked off with Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee leading pre-race stretches, and finished with participants enjoying frozen yogurt courtesy of Fro Yo, great beer from Urban Chestnut, root beer from Fitz’s, and post-race stretching from Apex Physical Therapy.” “Over the years, tens of thousands of runners of all ages and abilities have participated. In the 5 and 10k events, serious competitors enjoy testing themselves against a field of dedicated runners, while weekend joggers and walkers cheerfully bring up the back of the pack. And for families, it has always been a familyfriendly event. There are Fun Runs for children and their parents, in which everyone is a winner. It is a holiday tradition for many, and one of the oldest and most popular runs in the area. Tom Eckelman, now with Big River Running, was there from the start in 1974, and we appreciated his help in this year’s event,” Ballard said. “The Library took over the event in 1984 for the Run’s 10th anniversary, after the University City Special Events Committee disbanded. Additional beneficiaries were added in 2000 when the run was incorporated as
“Awards for the first male and female finishers over 50 years are given in the names of Jack Frohlichstein, a Run founder, and the late Mary Fahey, a runner for most of the past 40 years and member of the Memorial Day Run Committee.” This year, Robert Fuerst, time 33:46, and Debbie Kerber, time 45:11, were the fastest 10k runners over 50. Jim Behrens, time 19:44 and Debra Hexsel, time 22:45, were the fastest 5k runners over fifty. Jack Frolichstein observed the youth races from his home, which is within sight of the University City Public Library. Jack lives independently, and keeps himself in shape by walking. Run founder and longtime participant Ann Wilson assisted 5k and 10k runners at her direction official post near University City High School. Ballard expressed thanks to Fitness with Anika, a race sponsor, and to Anika Porter of the Memorial Day Run Board, for arranging for Jackie Joyner-Kersee’s appearance. The events benefit the Green Center, U City in Bloom, and the University City Public Library. The University City Public Library, the starting point for the races, serves the citizens of University City and the wider metropolitan area through reciprocal lending agreements with books, magazines, audio-visual materials, reference service, meeting facilities, and public Internet access. An exciting new “MakerSpace” adds new technologies, such as 3-D printing and modeling and software for audio and video recording and editing. Sponsors included ApexNetwork Physical Therapy, Parkview Gardens, Fitz’s, Urban Chestnut, Fro Yo, Fitness with Anika, Salt & Smoke, West End Word, Blueberry Hill, and Janji, Ballard reported.
Community, healing celebrated at Ferguson Twilight Run The streets of Ferguson exuded a spirit of camaraderie at the sixth annual Ferguson Twilight Run on May 16; 301 people completed the 10K, and 1,070 the 5K. Fifty women 60 through 69 walked or ran the 5K! Matt Lawder won both the 5K and the 10K races, and his

military achievements, features “a Finish on the Fifty” yard line of the stadium, on-field medal presentations by active military personnel, multiple start waves, pace teams, an associated youth run, and a post-race tailgate party. The course goes south on Lakeshore Drive, crosses over to the Lakefront Trail, then heads north. “This was my second time I have done this event,” Denise said. “The first time was two years ago, on the 10th anniversary of the race. I had a solid race, but not a PR — PR is SLTC’s Frostbite run a few years ago. Maybe I like hills.” The 12th running of Soldier Field 10 Mile sold out prior to race day; 10,392 participated this year. times were 15:44 and 35:27, respectively. In the female division, Kate Helbig won the 5k with a time of 20:57. Julie Lossos won the 10K with a time of 40:22. SLTC Board member Wendie Cummings and her Ferguson Middle School Girls on Track team combined forces with the Girls on the Run team at Griffith Elementary (where she formerly coached) to serve water and cheer enthusiastically for all the 5K and 10K runners. Many coaches, parents and kids on the team collaborated on a sunny and humid evening after many storms throughout the afternoon. This was the community service project for both teams, and it was wonderful to be able to not only give back to the running community, but support the entire community of Ferguson as we all work to heal and unite after such an unprecedented and traumatic time. Vendors, refreshments, and musicians were available for runners and their families at the start/finish on Florissant Road in the heart of Ferguson. The resilience of the community was shown by “Coming Soon” signs on windows in the business district, and by the joy and collaboration by a diverse crowd of participants, volunteers and supporters in such a great neighborhood. Kudos to Dwayne James, the race director, for putting on such a wonderful event!
Denise Buehrer heads to Chicago for Soldier Field 10-miler Denise Buehrer took the Amtrak to Chicago and enjoyed the Soldier Field 10-Mile in Chicago on Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. The race, which honors
Fran & Rick Armstrong enjoy running on trip to Malaysia Fran and Rick Armstrong enjoyed a delightful twoweek trip to Malaysia during April. Their trip included some unusual running routes and post-run refreshments. In 1973-74 as a Peace Corps Volunteer, Rick had taught mathematics and physics in a state secondary school in Sri Aman, Malaysian State of Sarawak, on the island of Borneo. A number of Rick’s former students and colleagues were gracious hosts during Rick and Fran’s trip. Rick and Fran’s most arduous adventure during their trip was the hike up Mount Singai. The trek included walking on a very helpful boardwalk with Stations of the Cross along the path, a Catholic Memorial Pilgrimage Center about halfway up the mountain, and then, a very steep and rugged trail to the top. On returning to the valley, coconuts with ice-cold coconut milk inside were wonderfully refreshing. Fran made a strong showing in The Senior Olympics during Memorial Day weekend. She competed in the 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1,500 meter track events. Whether in Borneo, Chicago, Ferguson, University City, or anywhere in between, the Saint Louis Track Club wishes you the best. Member profile: Adnan Gutic I was born in Prijedor, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on January 3, 1985. I lived in Zagreb, Croatia, from September of 1992 to January of 1994. At that time, I moved to the United States first to Houston, Texas, for six months, and then to St. Louis, Missouri. I moved to the US due to the war in Bosnia. I started going to the Missouri School for the Blind in the fall of 1996. This is where I started to learn what I really could do. The other schools that I went to before only taught me English. At this school, I became competent in reading and writing braille, using computer screen readers and shortcut keys to substitute for using a mouse, electronic braille notetakers, orientation and mobility, in addition to the standard school curriculum. Due to all the different sports and clubs that I was involved in at the school and the skills I learned, I started gaining more confidence in myself. I went there from 4th grade until I graduated high school in June of 2005. I competed in Track and Field, Wrestling, Goalball, Swimming, and Forensics. I also did Powerlifting as an intramural sport. The clubs that I was involved in were Student Council, Student Leadership Council, Beta Club, and Boys Scouts. I graduated number one in my class, valedictorian.
am currently working as a Braille teacher at the Missouri School for the Blind. Before that, I was a personal trainer for Dynamic Fitness management.
After graduating high school, I went to Lindenwood University to study Athletic Training. I came to realize that I could not perform some of the duties that Athletic Trainers have to do because of my visual impairment, so I switched my major to Physical Education. I graduated college in May of 2010 with a Bachelor’s Degree. I was also on the Dean’s list. At college, I continued my involvement in competitive sports. I wrestled for three years and my team won two National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ championships. In college I also started competing in Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in which I still compete today.
In 2010, 2011, and 2014 I represented the USA in the International Blind Sports Associations (IBSA) World Championships for Judo. In 2009 and 2013 I competed in the IBSA Pan-American Games for Judo. I won first place in the 2013 tournament and third in 2009. Currently I am ranked first in the USA in my weight class in the visually impaired division. Internationally, I am currently ranked 15th place; I need to be in the top 12 to be eligible for the Paralympics next year. I have also won four national championships in the visually impaired division at the USA Judo national championships. My ultimate goal is to make the Paralympics and to win a medal.
After graduating college, I went to Denver, Colorado. I went to an independence training center for the blind called Colorado Center for the Blind. They taught skills such as home management, traveling independently, assistive technology for the blind, and continued braille instruction. I was there from June to December of 2010. Then I moved back in January of 2011 and lived there for another eight months. In August of 2011 I came back to St. Louis. I
I joined the St. Louis Track Club because I would like to start running more. I also want to meet new people outside of my current circle. I live across the street from Tower Grove Park and would welcome someone to run with me. Due to my visual impairment, I need a runner that I can hold onto for a few miles. If anyone would be up for a run with me they can contact me at 314-800-5692 or email at adnan. gutic@msb.dese.mo.gov.

Ask Styles!
How do I come back from an injury?
Q: Hey Styles, I’m coming off an injury, how fast should I ramp up my miles? Matt G.
A: This is a tough one, Matt. Unfortunately, I am probably not all that qualified to answer this, but will take a stab (hehe, injury get it?). Everyone and every injury is different, so I’m not sure there is a perfect formula. From personal experience, I will start with 1-milers for a few days, then if all is going well, run 2-milers for a few days. If things keep progressing, I would bump to 4, then after a few weeks go for an 8-miler. If that goes ok, I will return to a normal easy running schedule. Of course, if the injured area is not responding well to running, then back off and maybe go see a professional for it.
not want the same treadmill as the casual walker. These things aren’t cheap, so you want to make sure you choose wisely. If you don’t end up liking your treadmill, you won’t ever get on it. Q: Hey Styles, what motivates you in a race, specifically a marathon, when things get really tough? - Bill K.
A: I think anyone who races even runs has experienced the dark side where things get really hard and you just want to quit. Motivation to push through can come in many forms. For me, I just think about what is important to me and why I run: my 2 boys. Some races, I will write their names on my arm or race bib. When things get tough I think about their smiling faces and the hugs Q: Hey Styles, I’m in the market for a treadthat await when I am done. Mediterranean Pasta Salad Welcome to summer in St. Louis. It’s hot, it’s muggy, and the idea of a warm meal is hardly appetizing. Enter: Mediterranean Pasta Salad!
