President’s Column

SLTC celebrates great milestones St. Louis Track Club Members, Greetings Track Club Members! Hopefully, everyone has been able to stay dry during the extremely wet summer weather we’ve had to date. Two 5k races I participated in during June were in the rain, one of them, it poured! One event that had some great weather was our Scavenger Hunt that took place on June 28th. Of course, we had tornado warnings later in the evening after the event, but the weather was terrific during it. The event looked like a lot of fun, but I must apologize as I had the Brainteaser station, it was quite tough! The pizza party afterwards at Felix’s was great. The party was a celebration of all the volunteers at Track Club events throughout the year. Thanks to Jen and Rae for putting on this event, and special thanks to all the volunteers. We were also able to celebrate Dottie’s 90th birthday at the event. Happy birthday Dottie! With the July 4th holiday coming up, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Independence Day. With July here, I hope to see members out

at the SLTC Marathon Training runs or the Social run at Schlafly Tap Room on July 20th at 6 p.m. Until next time, keep putting one foot in front of the other! Mike Huelsmann, President St. Louis Track Club, est 1970

Big accomplishments, fast times at Festival of Miles The Track at Saint Louis University High School exuded excitement at the eighth annual Festival of Miles on June 4th. The events ranged from a youth mile, beginning at 6:30 p.m., to the Saint Louis Track Club’s Elite Men’s Mile at 8:50. “Despite a shaky forecast earlier in the day, the rains went south and the weather ended up perfect,” said Meet Director Ben Rosario. “The Junior High Invitational Girls race kicked off the track races with a meet record, 5:07.26, set by Jennifer Weaver, of the Saint Louis Blazers Track Club. She edged out Grace Ping, who traveled all the way from Minnesota. Not to be outdone, Brandon Miller of the Ultimate Speed Academy Track Club shattered the meet record for the Junior High Boys with his 4:32.66.” ”It was clearly a fast night. The First Bank 800’s kept the ball rolling. There are certain marks in high school running that have a big time meaning. Going sub 2:10 for 800 meters on the girls side is a huge deal; Larkin Chapman (IL) busted out a four-second PR to win the race in 2:09.90. With nine ladies under 2:15 this event was clearly a meet highlight. And the boys race was just as memorable. Memphis University High School’s Carlton Orange ran the nations’ third-leading time with his 1:50.45. Orange went wire-to-wire to lead six boys under 1:54.” “In The Big River Running Company High School Girls Championship Mile, Iowa’s Stephanie Jenks completed the hat trick, securing her third straight F.O.M. win. Jenks’ 4:47 was just a tick off her own meet record. All told, seven ladies broke the five-minute barrier with Anna West (MO), Callie Logue (KS) and Lexi Reed (CO) going 2-3-4. The race was a microcosm of what F.O.M. has become — 14 states were represented at the high school level. Then, if not for something very special that happened later, the UMB Bank Women’s’ 800 meters would’ve stolen the show. Not one, but two, ladies went under the old F.O.M. record. LaTavia Thomas became the first to run under 2:01 and win an extra $1,000 for

our 2:00-flat bonus. Her 2:00.99 led three athletes under 2:02, with Oiselle’s Lauren Wallace running 2:01.13 and Shannon Leinert going 2:01.62. The marks were personal bests for both Wallace and Leinert. And…highschooler Hannah Long (MO) finished fifth in 2:04.23 — the number one time 800-meter high school, in the nation.” “The Big River Running Company High School Boys Championship Section was the penultimate event. The young men did a great job setting the table for the pros. A hard-charging Bryce Richards (IL) stunned the field with a mad dash to the finish that saw the 15th seed take the win in 4:09.47 over an incredibly deep group. Nine athletes broke 4:13 for the full mile, and F.O.M cemented its position as one of the country’s top postseason HS miles.” “And then, there was the Saint Louis Track Club Elite Men’s Mile. The crowd was at a fever pitch as former F.O.M. champs Jordan McNamara and Jack Bolas took to the track against top U.S. Marathoners Aaron Braun and Tyler Pennel, among others. High schooler Grant Fisher (MI) was in the field, trying to become the seventh U.S. high schooler to break four minutes in the mile. McNamara went with the early pace, only to fall back to the pack after 1,000 meters. With 200 meters to go Fisher, moved into second behind Pennel and it looked like the HS phenom might just win. With 50 meters to go, McNamara came out of seemingly nowhere to pass both Fisher and Pennel for the win; then there was only one more thing to look, at and that was the clock. And he did it! Grant Fisher ran 3:59.38 and did indeed break the four-minute-mile, becoming the third-fastest American high-schooler of all time.” The Festival of Miles Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the sport of track and field and to give back to athletes in need. Each year, all proceeds from ticket sales go to an athlete/athletes in need. This year’s recipient was Brian Ott, who has been dealing with cancer of the brain and spinal cord since he was 3 years old. He attends Fort Zumwalt West High School, where he manages the school’s football and basketball teams. Brian and his family enjoyed the F.O.M. from seats almost adjacent to the track.

meter Class 5 state meet, the fastest time in state history. At the Festival of Miles, she ran 2:04.23 for the 800-meter, having the fastest 800-meter time ever achieved for a Missouri high school girl. Her running history was profiled by David Kvidahl on the front page of the Sports section of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Sunday June 21. Best wishes to Hannah as she prepares for her freshman year at Stanford University.

Forest Park Forever receives $30 million endowment

More than 20,000 participate in 17th annual Susan G. Komen race Downtown Saint Louis streets teemed with walkers and runners for the 17th Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure the morning of June 13th. Breast cancer survivors, their supporters, and persons participating in memory of loved ones filled the streets to participate in the 5K or one-mile events. Pink balloons, pink shirts, and other pink memorabilia colored the plazas. “More than 20,000 participants registered,” said Janet Vigen Levy, director of public relations and marketing for Komen Saint Louis. “So far, approximately $1.3 million has been raised through this event, which is Komen St. Louis’ signature fundraiser. The funds support Komen St. Louis’ year-round efforts to save lives and end breast cancer forever. Fundraising for the 2015 Komen St. Louis Race continues through July 31.” “I always enjoy doing this race event for a good cause,” said SLTC member Ana Schnizer, a 14-year breast cancer survivor. “We have to find a cure for this killer disease through good research. I am blessed that I am in remission.” Ana placed first in her age group in the 5K Competitive Walk/Run this year. Overall winner was Andrew Moore; overall female winner was Kaylin Smith.

Forest Park Forever announced a gift of $30 million from Enterprise Holdings founder Jack C. Taylor and his family. The gift was the largest in the organization’s 29-year history and one of the largest gifts to support a public park in the United States. The family designated the entirety of this gift toward Forest Park Forever’s endowment, which provides support for the maintenance and operations of Forest Park. Forest Park Forever is working to preserve the gains made during recent decades, while tackling urgent Park-wide repairs in a timely and cost-efficient manner. Forest Park Forever has identified the need to make a larger annual investment in the Park, something a gift of this magnitude will help make possible (Stephen Schenkenberg, June 10 2015 Press Release). Forest Park Forever hosted a special ribbon cutting and celebration marking the completion of the new Festival & Parking Plaza in Forest Park, the old Upper Muny Lot on May 27. Founded in 1986, Forest Park Forever is a private nonprofit conservancy that works in partnership with the City of St. Louis and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry to restore, maintain and sustain Forest Park. The Saint Louis Track Club, during its 45-year history, has seen much growth and development of the park. Forest Park has been a venue for the Saint Louis Track Club’s Pace Series, Frostbite Series, and half-marathon since their beginnings.

Misty summer weather no match for Walking Ramblers The Walking Ramblers are rambling into the summer. “Enjoy a break from the rain on Saturday: June 20th, 7 a.m. Meet at Forest Park Visitors Center in Forest Park… walk 16 to 17 miles with shorter options,” read their email. “Interestingly we had foggy mist in the beginning. I was noticing how much the rain had really made the runner’s trail a muddy soup in spots; still, that was better than

Creve Coeur Park where parts of the trail were underwater. We’ve now reached the time of year when it is a tradeoff about which feels better — sun/humidity or rain/ cooler,” said Alison Bourey, who walked 11 miles of the route. “The mist didn’t last very long and the clouds kept the temp down for a while.” said trip leader Sue Turner. “Gerardette and I walked on and on and on for 16 miles. When the sun came out, it got HOT so, we kept heading for the shady spots. And the shade was cool. Two Bread Co’s and the Center of Clayton provided pit stops. The 16 miles took 5 hours and 30 minutes — about a 20-minute pace. We were taking it very easy, even though it didn’t feel like it while we were walking.” The Walking Ramblers are an open group which has an all-season schedule of walks in varied locations. A: Hey John, running on vacation can be hard because your routine changes. I typically use vacations as a cutback week. I will usually run about 50% to 65% of my typical mileage, with maybe 1 or 2 being short, but faster, runs. I will try to go out early when the family is still asleep or just waking up. I want to minimize the time away from what should be our family time. Taking time off during vacation could be a good way to recharge the batteries and get you ready to hit it hard when you get back home.

Q: Hey Styles, what sounds more appealing to you: the beer mile or the White Castle mile? -Matt G.
