President’s Column
Hello from your new SLTC president! Why Hello! My name is Mike Orrico, and I am a husband to (St.) Erin, daddy to 2 boys (Luca 5 / Killian 2), a banker, run-streaker, t-ball and soccer coach, a Libra, and the newly elected President of the St. Louis Track Club. Before I get too deep into that, I would be remiss if I didn’t say my thanks to outgoing President and good friend, Mike Huelsmann. Mike and I have been friends since our days playing baseball at Saint Louis University. We both joined the Track Club around the same time and immediately knew we wanted to be more involved. I am truly amazed with his dedication to running, not only with his personal goals, but the way in which he lead the club the past 2 years. The club has accomplished many great things under his leadership, and I am hopeful he sticks around awhile to help continue the great tradition. Thanks Mike, I am proud to call you a friend. Next, on behalf of the board I want to thank you all for your continued support and membership as we enter a new year. You are truly the motor that makes the Track Club go. Can you believe in just 5 short years the St. Louis Track Club turns 50? I don’t know about you, but I am in awe of this. This really is a testament to the members, as well as the great ambassadors of running that started this club, who keep it going all these years. With
that being said, in order to make it another 50 years, we need to continue to grow, adapt and be better. As members, you can help do that. Please feel free to provide feedback to myself, the board, or anyone else that may listen. Also, I implore you to help add new members to this great club. We have a terrific mission statement that really does fit anyone in the running and walking community. I know we have more competition than we did in the past, and that is fine. It doesn’t matter what singlet or shirt you wear come race day, we should all be on the same team when it comes to the St. Louis Track Club. If you run/walk/crawl to a finish line, we all can do it while supporting our great club. As for me, I am really excited, and somewhat nervous, for the opportunity to lead this great club. I have big shoes to fill. You will hear more of my random thoughts, and I hope to hear from some of you over the coming months. In the meantime, I hope to see you all at the remaining Frostbites races, the annual banquet, which will be a blast on February 27, or running around town. May the course be with you. Winter Distance Camp connects student runners “Nearly 40 middle school and high school runners attended Big River Winter Distance Camp December 2730,” said Katie Helbig, of Big River Running Company. “An annual tradition in its ninth year, camp offers the perfect event for kids looking to stay active over winter break and make some new running friends. Camp Director Mark Spewak brings a monstrous level of enthusiasm and his approach that encourages ‘PMA’ — ‘positive mental attitude’ really resonates with the campers. “Campers made some memories running in cold, consistent rain the first two days. Luckily, indoor activities such as ‘fireside chats,’ trivia, yoga and stretching with Metro Power Yoga, a college panel, and other inspiring talks kept everyone learning and entertained. Camp culminated in a fun track meet at MICDS. Everyone raced a mile, some even achieving PRs! The last race of the ‘meet’ was the infamous banana 400m relay. Six teams took part with the anchor leg having to finish a banana upon completion. If you ask the campers what their favorite part of camp was, they’d probably say the Nike hooded sweatshirts or perhaps the awesome lunches.” The Big River Winter Distance camp was held 9 am – 1 pm Sunday, December 27th through Wednesday, December 30th at Kirkwood Community Center and Park (Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday), and at MICDS on Wednesday. Runners of all abilities in grades 7 through 12 who are interested in distance running could attend. “Everyone from beginning runners to those striving to be state champions can gain something. Runners from more than 80 schools in the St. Louis region have attended,” read the invitation. The camp fee included one-onone instruction, talks by experts, a panel discussion with current and former collegiate runners, a hooded sweatshirt, surprise goodies, a daily post-run lunch, and the Big River Indoor Track Meet and Pancake Brunch.
The Walking Ramblers on the New Year’s day stroll.
Walking Ramblers start the new year off right A contingency of Walking Ramblers trekked the streets of downtown Saint Louis on Jan. 1. The group started and finished at The Culinaria, and enjoyed all kinds of foods in the upstairs dining area after the walk. The roughly 5-mile route, mapped by Patricia Cornell, included the Arch grounds, Union Station, The Thomas Eagleton Federal Courthouse, and the City Museum. Andy Bourey took the opportunity to photograph the flooded Arch grounds. The relentless rain had finally let up New Year’s Day.
Commitment Day 5k celebrates 3rd year in St. Louis The Commitment Day 5K was founded in 2012 By LIFETIME A Healthy Way Of Life Company, and this January marked the 3rd year the event was held in St. Louis. Commitment Day is a national event to kick off a nationwide healthy way of life movement. At over 50 locations around the United

States, thousands of participants ran, walked and rolled as a proactive stand against poor health, inadequate nutrition, controllable disease and spiraling health care costs. Commitment Day supports and celebrates individual human achievements and the passionate pursuit of greatness — one milestone at a time. Previously held in Downtown St. Louis, the venue was moved to start and finish at the beautiful and spacious Life Time Fitness West County location (3058 Clarkson Rd, Ellisville, MO 63017). The new course took the 400 registered athletes north on Clarkson Road and through nicely paved neighborhood streets with a view, before returning back to the club. The top overall male and female athletes were Carter Snow (16:55.85), and Julie Lossos-Snow (18:22.63). After the race, athletes got to enjoy hot coffee, water, Huga Bars, bananas and Start Right Waffles to begin the new year on a healthy note!
Snowball Series 5-miler draws speedy times The Snowball Series included a five-mile New Year’s Day Run in Forest Park. The overall winner of 333 total finishers was Andy Kosiatek, time 27:43; the top overall female was Anna West, time 30:00. The New Year’s Day Run was the third run of the five-event Snowball Series.
Mich Ultra team checks out Anheuser Busch holiday lights The Michelob ULTRA team did some non-racing mileage during a nighttime tour of the Anheuser Busch brewery December 12. “The lights were exceptional this year. Nick Whiteside’s and John Brenner’s favorite was the Lime a Rita stop. The weather was exceptional – perfect for walking the brewery grounds,” said organizer Jeff Bockhorn.

daughter, Zan, and her fiancé, Jonas. Fran and Rick’s trip included a “lot of walking in San Francisco,” cross country skiing, snow-shoeing up to Big Baldy, and a 40-minute run in San Francisco by Fran. “The snow-shoeing up to Big Baldy was a pretty serious hike of about two hours. Down went a bit more quickly, even by a different route. Lovely view from up there,” Fran said.
SLTC welcomes new, returning board members Congratulations and best wishes to new, and newly re-elected, Saint Louis Track Club Board members— Brian Kratz, Justin Frederick, Kathy Pearman, Mark Russell, Mike Orrico, and Rae Mohrmann. The Board Members’ experiences range from “I do not have a typical athletic background” (Justin Frederick) to 100-plus marathons (Rae Mohrmann). Venues have ranged from a 10K in Mosul, Iraq (Brian Kratz), to the local track in Sheboygan, Wisconsin (Kathy Pearman), to marathons in fifty-plus states (Rae Mohrmann). Each member brings his or her own brand of enthusiasm, as shown by the election statements in December’s Track Time News. May the New Year run smoothly for The Saint Louis Track Club, led by the new and returning board members. Newly-elected board members, New Years’ Day runners and walkers, developing middle and high school athletes, travelers wearing Saint Louis Track Club Tshirts, nighttime sightseers at Anheuser Busch brewery, and many more, are carrying the Saint Louis running traditions into 2016. Board member profile: Kathy Pearman At 5 years old, I started running on our neighborhood track during my parents’ nightly walks after dinner. Other folks on the track remarked that I either had too much energy or a shot at becoming a decent runner when once I got older - both were true. I ran track in high school and the first year at college, but became too nervous about balancing school and running, so I quit the team to focus on academics (plus, I was pretty burned out by the time I reached college). Encouraged by a boyfriend, I started running longer distances to keep in shape and fell in love with the feeling I got after a solitary morning run before classes. Running helped me focus and it was a great stress reliever.

Club News & Notes Marathon training group: We’re looking for a volunteer or a small group of volunteers to train this summer with the current leaders to take over the Marathon Training group in the future. Anyone interested can contact the office. Minutes: The first order of business was an open forum discussion with a handful of members. Dates for upcoming events were set. Wrap-up and early planning for the half marathon was covered. Board elections were reviewed. The banquet was discussed, as well as future plans for the racing team. Marathon Relay recap from Rae and Paul: The day dawned bitterly cold for the middle of November, uncharacteristic for the past few Relays since the move to before Thanksgiving. A smaller, but equally enthusiastic group of teams and supporters gathered for the cold start. The usual sea of tents lined the exchange providing shelter for the spectators and waiting runners as well as a base for food and drink. Among the crowd were multiple teams representing Bryan Cave, Metro Milers, RunWell and New Balance. It was clear from the start that one of the Wash U
teams, The Fightin’ Wrightons, with a time of 2:29:08 would be the ultimate winner, with other teams close behind. The Marshallian Running Project was second overall and also in the Male Open division, with a 2:41:12 finish time. Mixed 160+, our largest division this year was led by finisher MORC Force, the first place winner with a time of 3:02:54. The Flying Dutchmen, a Family team of 3 generations enjoyed a rewarding day, as well as the All You Nied (Niedringhaus) is Love the Family winners. Our 200+ winners, The Unruly Squirrels came in with an impressive time of 3:30:35. Precision Health provided the usual stretching, massages, and dynamite music. Companion Bakery added bagels and marvelous granola bars. As the sun rose the temperature moderated providing a better setting as the remainder of the teams finished. Each year brings new challenges to this race, but what remains constant is the wonderful participants. We had one team turn in their medals because they realized that a member had cut a corner and had another participant take over the clip board at the finish line when help was needed. At a time of reflection and thankfulness, we are truly grateful to all who run this race.
Give back and volunteer at the Frostbite Series! The Frostbite Series started on Dec. 12 and will continue on alternating Saturdays through Feb. 6. The Frostbite Series is a challenging event, because there are usually 1,000+ participants, there are two distances for each event, and the distances range during the series from a 3k to half marathon. Volunteers are particularly important for this series, and we traditionally struggle to get the necessary help. Please consider help-
ing out! We need volunteers for set up and packet pick up, course marshals, water station, and the finish line on race day. We need inside and outside help, and you can volunteer for one Saturday or all of them. We are very flexible with scheduling. Please sign up directly online (http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c4ca4aa22a4fa7-20152016), contact Christy Polk at christy.polk@stlouistrackclub.com, or call the office at 314-7813926.

Ask Styles!
Am I ready to train for a marathon? What’s Up, Track Club? I’m Kathy and I’m here to answer all of your questions about running and life – well, maybe just running. I’ve run a ton of miles, studied plenty of different running philosophies, and will do the best I can to make sure you don’t make the same mistakes I have over the years. Q: One of my New Year’s resolutions is to run a marathon, but I’ve only ever completed a few 5ks. Am I being unrealistic with this goal? –Suzi A. A: Congratulations on committing to a smart and healthy resolution (much better than my resolution to watch even more Real Housewives shows this year). Taking a leap from running 5ks to training for a marathon is a big step, but it’s certainly not an unattainable goal. Because this is your first marathon, look for a training plan that uses an extended base phase build up. Many marathon training plans are 12-16 weeks. Look instead for a plan that is at least 16-18 weeks in length. You can find sample plans at a number of popular running sites including runnersworld.com, halhidgon.com, and many others. Start slow, build up your mileage gradually (increasing your weekly mileage 10-15% per week) and you should have no problem crossing the finish line of your first marathon successfully.
Q: Now that the weather has turned colder, any tips for running through winter? I’d like to avoid the treadmill as much as possible. –Stacy R. A: Winter running is a favorite of mine (full disclosure – I was born and raised in Wisconsin): the solitude of a desolate path, crisp air, zero humidity, less chance of coming across a bear in the woods… But along with the benefits to running in the colder temps, it’s tough to stay motivated and get outside. If you can, try to arrange your schedule so that you’re running in as much daylight as possible. I’m a big fan of running at lunch for this reason. Also, make sure you have the correct gear: a base layer, wind layer, hat or ear warmers, wind-blocking gloves, tights, and wool socks. You may have to experiment with a few different combos depending on how your body temperature regulates itself during cold weather exercise. The best motivator? Find a buddy who wants to run outside as well. Having someone else to run through the cold temps with will make spring get here just that much faster. Disclaimer: Styles is not a professional. For professional help, please contact a running coach, local running store, physician, and of course the interwebs.
