6:20 Club celebrates 35th annual holiday party A group of morning risers has graced the Saint Louis running scene since 1979. The 6:20 Club started with a handful of runners meeting at the corner of Forsyth and Skinker at 6:20 each morning. The informal club has grown to nearly 200 members and was featured in a 2005 Runners’ World article describing running clubs around the country. Gary and Patty Krosch marked the 35th Annual 6:20 Club in 2014 by the Holiday Party, which has been a tradition every year since 1979, thanks to Gary and Patty. “The tradition continues. Not a morning passes that the group doesn’t meet at their favorite corner. But don’t be late, they don’t wait,” said 6:20 club member Tom Eckelman.

Walking Ramblers have great times at the Godzilla Trail Run Two Walking Ramblers made strong showings at the “Godzilla,” The Pere Marquette (7.5-mile) Trail Run December 13. “What a glorious race – challenging, with great camaraderie. This year was the first of the 11 I’ve done the race that I did not need a jacket!” said Alison Bourey. “We even got great swag – bright orange running vests that look great even on grey days. We all did well. I set a PR at 2:01.” Alison placed second to Lolle Boettcher in her 65 to 69 age group. Sue Turner, 74, who won her age group, described the race as a challenge, especially after previous run-

ners had trampled the trails and made them slick. Andy Bourey, recovering from shoulder surgery, completed part of the course, as he had intended. 566 completed the course, administered by MetroTri Club and timed by FLEET FEET Sports. Justin Stewart, 27, of St. Charles, was the overall winner in 49:36, 6:37 pace per mile. Overall female winner was Leslie Bertsen, 32, of St. Louis, 1:06:38, 8:53 pace per mile.

Longtime member, Volunteer of the Year Ralph Brindley passes Ralph H. Brindley, 92, passed away on December 25, 2014, at Fleur Heights Center in Des Moines, Iowa. His daughter, Beverly Harcourt, reported that she had 2-1/2 good years of seeing him every day. On his last really good day, Friday, December 19, they talked about Christmas, Christmases past, etc. “He was in a great mood,” Beverly said. “(Saturday), the nursing home called and said he was very, very sick with a high fever.

He never fully regained consciousness. Mercy Hospice and the Fleur staff were excellent in taking care of him. He was always clean, comfortable, medicated, and peaceful.” Ralph was active in The Saint Louis Track Club since the late 1980s and was named Volunteer of the Year in 2003. His friendliness, smile, and sense of humor made his presence a welcome one at all types of events. One volunteer position was greeting people at The Mississippi Mile at The Old Chain of Rocks Bridge for many years. In his words, he was “telling people where to go.” Besides

being active in Track Club, he was active in teaching t’ai chi and in the Galloping Gourmets. He had retired from the Terminal Railroad Association. Ralph was the beloved husband of the late Eula (Woodruff ) Brindley; father of Beverly (Michael) Harcourt, Ralph (Norine) Brindley, and Richard (Karen) Brindley. He was a grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and had numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. May the Saint Louis Track Club face new challenges and hold memories of past times and traditions as 2015 begins. Please share your news and accomplishments with DSprin5574@aol.com, or the Saint Louis Track Club office.

Frostbite Series Race Day Tips & Tidbits Here are some tips for Frostbite Saturday mornings

 Race website: fleetfeetstlouis.com/racing/highlighted-races/frostbite-series  Parking: Parking is available in the lot that is just to the east of the tennis courts and just south of the Visitor’s Center. Street parking is also available throughout the park. Be sure to park legally.  Race bibs: Be sure to pick up a new race bib before each race. (No need to keep your bibs after each run.)  Race day registration: Will be available in the Learning Lab in the northeast room of the Visitor's Center. Follow the hall that says EDUCATION above it. Apparel and other gear will also be for sale before and after the runs in the Learning Lab.  When to arrive: Bib pickup and on-site registration is from 6:45-8:10am in the Visitor's Center. But for those who like to sleep in as late as possible, please plan to arrive no later than 7:30-7:45, so you have time to park, get your bib, stretch, say hello, all that good stuff. The Visitor's Center gets pretty crowded on cold morning so please plan a few extra minutes on those mornings.  Starting areas: Short and Long Course starting lines will be identified by 10-foot tall signs near the Forest Park Visitor’s Center. Please look for this signage to confirm that you are at the correct starting line for your race.  Courses: Please see our area paths page and scroll down to the Frostbite Series routes to see where each course starts or click on the distances in the chart: Frostbite Distances and Course Routes Dec. 13: 12K or 3K

Dec. 27: 10-mile or 2-mile

Jan. 24: Half marathon or 4-miler

Jan. 10: 20K or 5K

Feb 7: 10K & Series awards

 Start times: The Short Course start time will be approximately 8:30am and the Long Course start time will be approximately 8:35am. Both start times will be officiated by a St. Louis Track Club Race Director. Each race will be officially started by an Air Horn.  Inclement weather: Be sure to check facebook.com/saintlouistrackclub, twitter.com/sltcrunning and stlouistrackclub.com in case of inclement weather. We likely won’t cancel unless it’s really icy. If you have any concerns, please consider if conditions are right for you.  Food! Afterward, be sure to relax and grab a snack behind the Visitor’s Center after your run.  Series shirts: Series shirts are available in the Visitor’s Center Learning Lab after the second run. They are free to Series entrants and will be available for $15 to everyone after the 4th and 5th runs. To get to the learning lab, head to the northeast corner of the Visitor’s Center and follow the long hall that says EDUCATION above it.  Note about Forest Park streets: The streets of Forest Park do remain open during the run. We will have course marshals on the course but please be aware that cars will be driving through the park while we are running the Frostbite. Also, the streets are maintained by the city and not the SLTC.  As acknowledged by each participant (or parent or guardian if under 18) on their entry, bicycles, skates, baby joggers, pets and headphones are not permitted.

Make volunteering part of your New Year! Now that 2014 has come to a close, I want to personally thank all the Race Volunteers who somehow motivated themselves to get up before dawn to help out at a race event. You were the ones who faithfully set up the race courses, filled the water jugs, handed out the race bibs and dealt with all the last-minute changes for free! Most importantly, you actually decided to stand out on the course for hours in extreme cold and heat just to provide encouragement and assistance to us runners and walkers, even though many of us (myself included) sometimes get so focused on our race (or playlist) that we might not even notice you, let alone thank you for blocking traffic while standing out in the cold and rain, so we can mindlessly run/walk safely through the intersection. Now that 2015 is upon us and we are all checking out websites of upcoming races and setting our running/walking goals, this is also a good time to consider which events may need our help. For those runners and walkers that haven’t experienced the fun and excitement of being a Race Volunteer, please consider the “cross training” benefits of volunteering at a few events this year.

likely to develop high blood pressure than nonvolunteers. Maybe a “Couch to 5k Race Volunteer” program might make sense! Looking to meet new friends and build relationships without a lot of pressure? Being a Race Volunteer out on the course will provide you with a captive audience of hundreds to thousands of people that you can simply smile and yell out, “You are Looking Great” without sounding creepy! Who knows, your new best friend or significant other is just waiting to run by you at a race event this year. Want to experience and participate in the incredible strength of the human spirit? Races bring together all kinds of wonderful people, from first-time runner/walkers to runners trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Your encouragement and participation as a Race Volunteer helps everyone reach his or her goal. For many people, this event might be one of their greatest fitness achievements of their lifetime so far. Once again, thank you to everyone who has volunteered and will continue at races in 2015. For those of you who are still considering the benefits of spending your time handing out water or stopping traffic at the next race rather than working towards your new PR, I leave you with the final thoughts:

Besides the cardiovascular benefits of running/walking the race, volunteering will actually improve your overall health without all “Volunteering is at the very core of being a the sweat. The Frostbite Series starts on Dec. 13 and will be on alternating Saturdays through Feb. 7. The Frostbite Series is a challenging event, because there are usually 1,000+ participants, there are two distances for each event, and the distances range during the series from a 3k to half marathon. Volunteers are particularly important for this series, and we traditionally struggle to get the necessary help. Please consider helping out! We need volunteers for set up and packet pick up, course marshals, water station, and the finish line on race day. We need inside and outside help, and you can volunteer for one Saturday or all of them. We are very flexible with scheduling.
