President’s Column
Another great year comes to a close St. Louis Track Club Members, With Thanksgiving weekend wrapping up and December looming, we are nearing the end of 2014. First, I want to say it has truly been an honor to serve as President of the Saint Louis Track Club. It has been great working with the other Board Members and the overall membership. We have done our best to carry on some of the traditions of the Track Club, like the Half Marathon and 5k supporting the Special Olympics, Annual Awards Banquet (congrats to Gwen Eckelman on winning the Lifetime Achievement Award and Rae Mohrmann for winning the Volunteer of the Year Award), Pace Series, Cross Country Kickoff, and Frostbite Series, just to name a few. Additionally, we have attempted to bring about some new and exciting things, including our social runs with Schlafly as a partner, the 2nd Annual Corps of Discovery Trail Race, Spring Through St. Lou spring series, and SLTC Premier Race Team. Lastly, we are extremely excited about the upcoming launch of our new website! With this potentially being my last President’s Column, I want to take some time to thank all the members who come out to the events and also share feedback! I’ve really enjoyed getting to know everyone and look forward to seeing you at future events and get-togethers. Additionally, none of these great events could happen without the many volunteers, coordinators, and Race Directors who work behind
the scenes, often times year after year. So, I want to take the time to thank some here. I apologize because I know I’m missing or forgetting many: fellow board members – Wendie Cummings, Josh Aranda, Mike Orrico, Jill Finklang, Brian Kratz, Ryan Yoch, and Mark Russell; Race Directors - Don Denham (Pace Series), Ron Eisenberg and Steve Brady (Marathon Training runs), Paul McGee and Rae Mohrmann (Marathon Relay), Kevin Jokisch (SLTC Half/5k), Jill Akins (Clifton Heights 3k), Brian Carter, Bob Chitwood, and Mike Bahr (Frostbite Series), David James (Track Series); Christy Polk (Volunteer Coordinator), Danny Stults (helping launch the Premier Race Team); staff members who put in a lot of hours and hard work - Anna Jones, Maddie O’Quinn, Sallie Story, Justin Kupferschmidt, and Jen Mommens! I truly have a new appreciation for all the hard work put in by everyone and cannot thank you enough. And again, I certainly missed some people, so I apologize in advance! Lastly, I want to a pass along my condolences to the friends and family of Leonard Sova. Leonard passed away on Nov 18. He was a long time Track Club member and volunteer; the running community lost a great one. “Stay well and enjoy life.” – Leonard Sova Mike Huelsmann, President St. Louis Track Club, est. 1970

The Grapevine By Donna Springer
Friends and family remember longtime member Leonard Sova Saint Louis Track Club Lifetime Achievement (2001) winner Leonard Sova passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18, from multiple causes. Leonard’s presence was a familiar one at Frostbite Series races; at each race, he set up a table with a characteristic large sign to encourage Track Club membership. Although he lived in Saint Charles, he assisted at the Summer Track Series in Clayton on a regular basis. “He was particularly interested in helping youth to live a healthy lifestyle,” said his wife, Jan. “Such a shame and waste; he was a dear and lovely person, and a great asset to the Track Club. He was such a gentleman,” said Gwen Eckelman, longtime Saint Louis Track Club member and office secretary. Gwen was one of many Track Club members who attended Leonard’s 90th birthday celebration last February. Leonard participated in cycling events for 35 consecutive years at the Saint Louis Senior Olympics, since their inception in 1980. Opening ceremonies spotlighted him for his continuous participation. “No one has touched that record,” said his wife, Jan.
Saint Louis Track Club members attended his memorial service Nov. 23 at United Hebrew Congregation. In addition to his wife, Leonard is survived by one sister, four sons, one daughter, and four grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, The American Heart Association, or a charity of choice; the St. Louis Track Club made a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association to honor his legacy. Leonard’s helpfulness and friendly manner will remain a fixed part of The Saint Louis Track Club’s history and future development. His full obituary can be found here: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/stltoday/obituary.aspx?n=leonardsova&pid=173236065.
Share your New York Marathon story with the Grapevine! Congratulations to all who completed the TCS New York City Marathon on Nov. 2. Jason Thein, of Saint Louis, led the Missouri field with his 3:12:53 time. Peter Goldsmith, of Champaign, led the Illinois field in 3:10:09. The New York City Marathon began with a small group of runners in Central Park in 1970. It has been continuous since 1970, excepting 2012 when canceled due to damage from hurricane Sandy. Needless to say, 2014 featured much better conditions. Individual reports would be welcome additions to “The Grapevine.”

Rae Mohrmann racks up 98th marathon in Savannah Rae Mohrmann completed the Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon in Savannah, Georgia, on Nov. 8. “Fun race and a good weekend,” she said. “Forty degree start; perfect weather for running. The first half was very scenic and representative of Savannah. The second half was largely on a parkway with nothing scenic, and no shade.” Rae also visited an old friend on her trip. “Friends since we were three. Won’t say how many years that was!” she said. Rock ’n’ Roll Savannah was Rae’s 98th marathon. Her anticipated 100th will be the GO! STL on April 12, 2015. She is inviting people to be one of her 100 friends running with her at the completion of her 100th marathon. As a longtime resident of Ferguson, Missouri, Rae has witnessed much unrest during the last months. “We are all safe but the neighborhood is destroyed,” she said. “The school district in which I not only attended k through 12, but also taught most of my career, no longer exists. My neighborhood, where I raised my family, and spent over half of my life is destroyed. This makes us realize that family and friends are most important and not the stuff in the house,” she said. Best wishes for a peaceful holiday season and New Year for all, with smooth runnings and/ or walkings. Share your news and accomplishments with Dsprin5574@aol.com or the Saint Louis Track Club office

Ft. Collins Marathon impresses My daughter, Jessie, who lives in Denver, and I participated in the Equinox half marathon Sept. 21 in Fort Collins, Colo. It is a point-to-point race that starts 28 miles outside of Fort Collins, so we were bused to the starting line at the Mishawaka amphitheater, which has hosted many concerts. The race is on a two-lane highway and starts at 6,200 feet elevation and finishes at 5,400 feet, being entirely a gradual downhill course. The Poudre river runs alongside the road for the entire race; this was the most beautiful race I have ever done, with the river and mountains in view the entire time. This is the third year for this race, so there were only
800 runners, but each year the number of participants has grown substantially. There is also a 5-mile race that uses the final part of the half marathon course. The weather was ideal, and the postrace party is very well done with lots of food and entertainment. This race is also unique in that age group winners receive a handmade ceramic plate, a medal, and their choice from a variety of homemade jams. If you are looking for a beautiful race in Colorado, I highly recommend this race. Also, Fort Collins has a fantastic downtown with a lot of unique shopping and restaurants. I hope to run it next year again. -Bernie

‘Authentic’ Athens Marathon leaves lasting impression Track Club member John Finkenkeller just completed the Athens, Greece, “Authentic” Marathon on Nov. 9. Why do they call it “Authentic?” It’s the site of the first modern Olympics, held in 1896; a marathon starting in the town of Marathon, Greece, and finishing in Athens in the Panathenaic Stadium. It’s also based on the ancient myth in which Pheidippides in 490 BC supposedly ran from Marathon to Athens to report the defeat of the Persians, then dropped dead. After a 5:30 a.m. breakfast with runners from Singapore and Malaysia (we had a lot to talk about, as I had completed the Singapore marathon in 2013), I headed to one of three locations in Athens where a huge fleet of buses transported over 10,000 runners to the start. The main topics of conversation on the bus were race strategy and how to handle the “hills.” I had no idea what the “hills” were. Next to me on the bus was a runner from Ottawa, Canada. With winter approaching, I inquired about training in the cold in Ottawa and learned that she runs in cold weather until it gets below -30 degrees. I can’t imagine running in weather that cold. The marathon was well organized with wave starts, hydration every 2.5 k, bananas, Gu, sponges and plenty of crowd support with shouts of “Bravo.” After about 11 k, I reached the first of the “hills,” an ascent for about 4 k. The next hill started at 20 k and was 13 k of continuous ascent. To give you an idea of this hill, visualize running the hill on Forsyth west of Skinker, but for 8 miles. I wisely kept a steady pace, slower than my training pace, and ignored that tiny voice in my head telling me it’s OK to walk. This strategy worked and allowed me to run the entire course and finish only 11 minutes slower than my goal time of 4 hours. I placed 55th out of 303 runners in my age group.
If you are looking for a scenic marathon, Athens is not one to choose; but, it was a thrill to run the “Authentic”; to run the course of the first modern marathon, sprinting to the finish line in the Panathenaic stadium as if it were 1896, and a capacity crowd of 50,000 was cheering me on. The trip to Greece was wonderful; to see the massive Acropolis and Parthenon, imagining how they must have looked 2,000 years ago. We visited the town of Olympia, stood on the starting blocks in the ancient stadium and ran a loop of the stadium where the ancient Olympics took place and where the Olympic flame is lit prior to its journey to the site of the modern Olympic Games. I held an actual Olympic torch used to transport the flame to one of the modern Olympic Games. Most of all, I made new friends and met people from around the world. I now have invitations to run the Ottawa and Cyprus marathons. Maybe someday. -John Finkenkeller

Frostbite Series Race Day Tips & Tidbits Here are some tips for Frostbite Saturday mornings
Race website: fleetfeetstlouis.com/racing/highlighted-races/frostbite-series Parking: Parking is available in the lot that is just to the east of the tennis courts and just south of the Visitor’s Center. Street parking is also available throughout the park. Be sure to park legally. Race bibs: Be sure to pick up a new race bib before each race. (No need to keep your bibs after each run.) Race day registration: Will be available in the Learning Lab in the northeast room of the Visitor's Center. Follow the hall that says EDUCATION above it. Apparel and other gear will also be for sale before and after the runs in the Learning Lab. When to arrive: Bib pickup and on-site registration is from 6:45-8:10am in the Visitor's Center. But for those who like to sleep in as late as possible, please plan to arrive no later than 7:30-7:45, so you have time to park, get your bib, stretch, say hello, all that good stuff. The Visitor's Center gets pretty crowded on cold morning so please plan a few extra minutes on those mornings. Starting areas: Short and Long Course starting lines will be identified by 10-foot tall signs near the Forest Park Visitor’s Center. Please look for this signage to confirm that you are at the correct starting line for your race. Courses: Please see our area paths page and scroll down to the Frostbite Series routes to see where each course starts or click on the distances in the chart: Frostbite Distances and Course Routes Dec. 13: 12K or 3K
Dec. 27: 10-mile or 2-mile
Jan. 24: Half marathon or 4-miler
Jan. 10: 20K or 5K
Feb 7: 10K & Series awards
Start times: The Short Course start time will be approximately 8:30am and the Long Course start time will be approximately 8:35am. Both start times will be officiated by a St. Louis Track Club Race Director. Each race will be officially started by an Air Horn. Inclement weather: Be sure to check facebook.com/saintlouistrackclub, twitter.com/sltcrunning and stlouistrackclub.com in case of inclement weather. We likely won’t cancel unless it’s really icy. If you have any concerns, please consider if conditions are right for you. Food! Afterward, be sure to relax and grab a snack behind the Visitor’s Center after your run. Series shirts: Series shirts are available in the Visitor’s Center Learning Lab after the second run. They are free to Series entrants and will be available for $15 to everyone after the 4th and 5th runs. To get to the learning lab, head to the northeast corner of the Visitor’s Center and follow the long hall that says EDUCATION above it. Note about Forest Park streets: The streets of Forest Park do remain open during the run. We will have course marshals on the course but please be aware that cars will be driving through the park while we are running the Frostbite. Also, the streets are maintained by the city and not the SLTC. As acknowledged by each participant (or parent or guardian if under 18) on their entry, bicycles, skates, baby joggers, pets and headphones are not permitted.

Track Club, Thanks for all your work with the relay marathon. This was our first time. Thanks for the encouraging atmosphere and keeping the event affordable. It made it non-intimidating for us to sign up and give it a try. We may have been one of the latter groups to cross the finish line, but we are proud that we did it! -Team MMAM

Q: Hey Styles, have you ever pushed yourself so hard in a race that you got dizzy? - John F.
A: ’Tis the season! When ice hits I put on my Yaktrax (local running stores have them) or my screw shoes and head out. I usually look for grass to run on or even a crushed gravel path as it seems it’s harder for ice to build up on those. I am pretty cautious with ice; if you go down it will hurt.
A: Actually yes, it just happened to me for the first time a few weeks ago. I was running the Naperville Marathon with some friends when I started to feel dizzy in the last mile. The Frostbite Series starts on Dec. 13 and will be on alternating Saturdays through Feb. 7. The Frostbite Series is a challenging event, because there are usually 1,000+ participants, there are two distances for each event, and the distances range during the series from a 3k to half marathon. Volunteers are particularly important for this series, and we traditionally struggle to get the necessary help. Please consider helping out! We need volunteers for set up and packet pick up, course marshals, water station, and the finish line on race day. We need inside and outside help, and you can volunteer for one Saturday or all of them. We are very flexible with scheduling. Please sign up directly online (http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c4ca4aa22a4fa7-20143), contact Christy Polk at christy.polk@stlouistrackclub.com, or call the office at 314-781-3926.

Vote online here: https://stlouistrackclub.webconnex.com/2015board Wendie Cummings Wendie Cummings is a band director at Ferguson Middle School in the Ferguson-Florissant School District. She ran competitively on the Track and Cross Country Teams at Principia College while getting her liberal arts degree (B.A. in Music). She then went to University of Missouri-Columbia to get her teaching certificate and Masters in Education. She has been teaching band in public schools and playing principal clarinet in the St. Louis Civic Orchestra since 1997. She has been a competitive runner all of her life, and you can usually find her racing at local road and trail races at distances from the 5K to the ultramarathon. She and her husband, Dave, are both road cycling fanatics. They love to travel to find challenging routes to ride, like the mountains of France and Colorado. In the last 10 years, she has been heavily involved in Girls on the Run as a coach, a race planning committee member, and she also trains new coaches. It is very important to her to set an example for kids (who are musicians and runners) to work hard and to be confident, healthy and genuine. Mike Huelsmann Born and raised in St. Louis, Mike attended Lafayette High School where he played football and baseball before attending Saint Louis University to play baseball. Drafted by the Cleveland Indians, he played four years of minor league baseball before settling back into Saint Louis permanently. Currently, Mike works at World Wide Technology in IT and has been distance running for about 7 years. Additionally, he enjoys reading, Cardinal baseball, and hanging out with his new baby girl Annabelle! Mike has been a board member of the Saint Louis Track
Club for two years, helping grow the reach and impact of the Saint Louis Track Club. With the many volunteers and other board members, Mike has been part of a team that has continued the rich traditions of the club, like the Half Marathon and Clayton Police 5K, Annual Awards Banquet, Frostbite Series, and Marathon Relay (just to name a few!), while helping establish the new Premier Race Team, Corps of Discovery Trail Race, and Monthly social runs! He hopes to have an opportunity to continue as a board member of the Saint Louis Track Club and have a positive impact on the community! Justin Irving Justin Irving is Regional Supervisor and Analyst at a large financial services firm. He ran track and cross country competitively at Wentzville-Holt High School. Justin’s favorite events were the 400m and 800m, along with relays. He went on to the University of Missouri-Columbia, and continued running open track meets and a few road races. While at Mizzou, Justin changed majors multiple times, finally settling in on a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on Business and Communications, and a minor in Sociology. He spent the first few years after completing his bachelor’s degree working in New York for a film production company as an executive assistant. In 2006, life changes brought Justin back to St. Louis and he began his career in the financial services industry. Moving back to St. Louis slowly brought back his love of running. Since returning to the sport, his competitive nature has also returned. You can find Justin at many local races, particularly 5-10ks. He also enjoys working with new runners, like his wife and some coworkers, and acts as a mentor as they prepare for races throughout the year. Not just a runner and competitor, but also a fanatic, he also enjoys interacting with the track community on social media such as Twitter and Instagram.

Will Run for Food
Warm up with a winter classic
Not only is it cold outside, it’s cold season! Warm yourself up after a run and ward off the sniffles with a hearty bowl of chicken noodle soup. It has the perfect combination of protein and carbs to fill you up without weighing you down. I like to make a big batch and bring the leftovers to work for lunch. Makes 8 to 10 servings. Ingredients: • Chicken - 1.5 to 2 lbs • Chicken broth: 6 cups • Celery - to taste (2-4 stalks) • Carrots - to taste (2-4 carrots) • Egg noodles - 12 to 16 oz • Salt and pepper - to taste Directions 1. Fill pot with enough broth to cover chicken; bring to a boil. 2. Boil chicken until cooked and set aside to cool; reserve broth. 3. While chicken is cooling, cut carrots and celery into bite-sized slices. 4. Pull chicken apart, adding back to pot. 5. Add carrots, celery, salt, and pepper and bring to a boil. 6. Cook for 10 minutes in boiling broth.
7. Add noodles and cook to instructions. 8. Serve with Saltines or bread and add salt and pepper to taste. -Sallie Story
