President’s Column
It’s time to pass the torch
St. Louis Track Club Members, As 2013 draws to a close, as well as my term as Board Member and your SLTC President, I sit here reflecting on the events and accomplishments of the Board and its members. It has been an honor to participate as a board member of such a great organization over the past eight years, and as your president for the last two years. Thank you for all your support over the years. It has been a great experience, but time to pass the torch. The 2014-2015 Board Candidates mingled with our members Thursday evening at the December Open Board Meeting as we celebrated 2013. We started with a social half hour, followed by a short meeting. The candidates were introduced. After the meeting adjourned, there was time for everyone to socialize and enjoy the snacks and beverages. Thank you to all who attended. The SLTC Board elections were finalized at the meeting. We have a great group that I am confident will continue to grow the St. Louis Track Club and look at innovative ways to encourage participation in both events and volunteerism. Thank you to Jen Mommens, our Executive Director who has been invaluable this year in accomplishing all that we have. Rae Mohrmann serves as pacer to give back to the running community Rae Mohrmann, codirector of the Marathon Relay, has been doing some racing and pacing on her own. She paced the GO! Half-marathon and the Rock ’n’ Roll full marathon with The Michelob Ultra Runners. “What a gratifying experience!” she commented. “Running has brought so many positive things into my life that it is so rewarding to me, personally, to be
able to help others achieve their goals and benefit in many ways from their running, too.” The first weekend in November she went to Springfield, Mo., to visit with a high school friend, and to run the Conservation Bass Pro marathon. Rae placed second in her 65-69 age group (4:30:47/10:21 pace). “That is such a nice race,” she said. She recommends the marathon, and the other events of “The Fitness Weekend.”

Congrats and Thanks to Gwen Eckelman

est wishes to Gwen Eckelman as she retires from her duties as the office secretary of the Saint Louis Track Club. “I probably worked at the Track Club for about 34 years total,” Gwen said. “From 1980 until we got a real office in 1984, the Track Club address was at our home. The Track Club phone would ring day and night. At night, I put on a recording. Our dining room was race central. Finally, I asked for my dining room back. We rented an office on Clayton Road across from Schnucks, above where Katie’s Pizza is now. Can you imagine carrying boxes of T-shirts up to a second floor office? We used to hire the neighborhood kids to help put packets together: eg, Veiled Prophet Parade Runs, Diet Pepsi 10K, Seven Up Half Marathon packets.
“Then we rented a place in the Forest Park Hotel for a year when Schnucks was being built or expanded… Then we found an office space on Hampton near Columbia. From there we moved to our present office space in Clifton Heights, which had storage. Previously, we had a storage locker, and a lot of technical equipment was stored at Ernie and Nancy Carr’s house. Ernie repaired all of our equipment for 30-plus years and they handled the rentals, also. We were so lucky to have them involved for so long. “So many changes over the years, not just in sponsorship but in volunteer groups and Boards,” Gwen commented. “The membership is why I stuck around so long -- all the wonderful people -- the relationships that Tom and I have formed, both professionally and personally.”
Ben Rosario with Gwen and Tom Eckelman.
To keep in touch, you can contact the Eckelmans at eckelmann@aol.com, or at Gwen’s personal e-mail address, gwen.eckelman@yahoo. com. -intro written by Donna Springer Over the years that I have known Gwen, one story hangs in my mind. It was the first Spirit of St. Louis marathon. Gwen had already put in a very long day and was ready to wrap things up. Tom was still picking up cones and other traffic related items and was about finished. We were heading back to the storage locker when Tom got a call that some more equipment turned up and had to be picked up. We turned around and headed back downtown. A day that started well before dawn ended after 8 that night... the next day was a work day! -Don Hong As president of the club for several years and also a race director (before the days of electronic timing) I would frequently call the office after some unfortunate manual timing mishaps with the spindles and ask, “How can we make sense of these race results?” She would always take a deep breath, then proceed to spend hours calling many

Another year, another crazy marathon relay Each year, our goals for the relay are: put on a low key, low cost, and high FUN event. Participants don’t get a fancy technical shirt, but instead, a pair of running gloves. Runners and families/friends don’t get a fancy meal, but delicious snacks donated by our sponsors, Companion Bread, Michelob Ultra & of course, the St. Louis Track Club. Runners don’t get chip timed, but instead are given personal service at the finish line. Finally, everyone gets to have a fun day with friends, family, coworkers, and running buddies whether a new 5k runner or a near elite. This race is for everyone. Some are doing this distance for the first time, some are coming back from a recent injury or illness, and some are attempting to beat last year’s time on the clock. If a runner can do any of these things, or a host of others that we haven’t even thought of, then we have done our jobs. Running is empowering, and each of you is a winner. Through the years, each race has a certain quirk or special memory, which we thought would be the addition of the special costume category. But this year rises
above them all. With the severe weather that hit us all in 4 seconds flat, twisting every tent, flinging the refreshments everywhere, along with the water jugs and tables, we heard not one complaint! Some runners and volunteers took refuge at the Muny, while others just had to continue on the course because they had nowhere else to go. Still, we received nothing but kudos. The kudos go to the runners. Running simply makes us better people. The help, sharing, and camaraderie that was experienced on Sunday was special. The weather provided a special bond that will be long remembered. We are glad to have been a part of all of it with each of you. Naturally, we could not have gotten through the day without our volunteers. A huge thank you to Donna Springer, Pam Mosca, Lola Boyce, Karen Lester, Ken Darabcek, Laura Patterson, Jen Mommens, Gregg Mohrmann, Ferguson & Al Beardsley, Diana and Anthony Giacalone, Jackie Corn, Loyd Duering, Pat Britt, John Dickey, and Mary Jo Rehg. -Paul & Rae
