A Storied History
The story of Evergreen & Wellspring begins in 1790, when settlers from Pennsylvania established roots in what is now the northern corridor of Cincinnati, near the admired town of Wyoming, Ohio. This land, once dense with untamed forest and traversed by a trail used by General Anthony Wayne on his way to the Battle of Fallen Timbers, would go on to witness centuries of transformation.
By the mid-1800s, the property evolved into the Meyers Estate, a flourishing vineyard that draped over the rolling hills. At its heart stood a Greek Revival mansion, built in the 19th century with grand columns, intricate moldings and a presence that was both commanding and gracious. Beneath it, a wine cellar carved 30 feet underground safeguarded barrels of estate-pressed wines, a cool sanctuary where time moved slowly, preserving the flavors of each harvest.
Yet the cellar’s story held a deeper significance. During the tumultuous years leading up to the Civil War, the mansion became a quiet participant in the fight for freedom – serving as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Hidden passageways and candle-lit signals guided those seeking liberty through the darkness, while the cellar provided refuge, safety and a promise of new beginnings. This chapter of courage and conviction is woven into the very foundation of the estate – a legacy of humanity that endures.
As decades passed, the estate continued to evolve. The vineyards gave way to manicured gardens and tree-lined paths, yet the mansion remained – a steadfast guardian of the past. Though wine is no longer pressed from estate grapes, glasses still clink together in celebration, echoing the past with each toast.
