Creation said, “I want to hide something from the humans until they are ready for it. It is the realization that they create their own reality.” The Eagle responded, “Give it to me. I will take it to the moon.” The Creator replied, “No. One day they will go there and find it.” The Salmon suggested, “I will bury it on the bottom of the ocean." The Creator replied, “No. They will go there, too.” The Buffalo stated, “I will bury it on the Great Plains.” The Creator replied, “They will cut into the skin of the earth and find it even there.” Grandmother, who lives in the breast of Mother Earth and, who has no physical eyes but sees with spiritual eyes, said, “Put it inside of them.” And the Creator proclaimed, “It is done.” ~ Creation Story from the Hopi Nation, Arizona

Our Planet does not need More Money... Our value system is a little off when it comes to green living. We seem to think in terms of dollars and cents in just about every area of our lives. This value system does not work with the problems we are facing regarding living sustainably. Our planet doesn't need money, it needs behavioral change. Small things do matter. For example, we could pledge to stop using the dishwasher for small loads, using the dryer for clothes, start bicycling, taking a bus or choosing to ride a train rather than a plane. That's just the beginning, When we talk about greening, it should include increasing local vegetation. In areas experiencing drought (hello!), using more succulents, and not planting invasive species. Our individual lifestyles may all be different, but with one common goal. Let's individually evaluate what "indulgence" we can do without to help save our planetary home. Together we can make a difference! Margaret Hennessy Founder/Publisher

The Green Team: (L to R) Endre Vargha, John Karp, Jenny Malott, Cheryl Lowman, Jacki Turner, Madeline Palaszewski, Margaret Hennessy, Diane Parnell, Vera Vargha, and Monte Allen Solstice Green Directory Mission: To provide information on environmental issues and ways to address concerns of residents on the Central Coast. To help educate consumers so that they can make better choices locally by providing visibility of green and healthy products and services. Keeping Cambria a unique and welcoming community is the goal of "Beautify Cambria." Its latest project is to replace old individual magazine kiosks outside of the Cookie Crock with a custom built kiosk that will hold and display local magazines. The new kiosk, made of wood with a copper roof, will be installed by summer of 2020.

what do you mean

"Green?" The following are some examples of how the term is used to denote anything that conserves our natural resources while protecting our environment:

DIRECTORY

WOMEN’S HEALTH Central Coast Thermography (805) 441-5557

• All things grown organically, without petroleum based chemicals from food to organic cotton. • All things natural and from raw materials grown or found in nature and not made from petroleum. • Any renewable resource, like sunshine, wind and water is green when used to power homes and factories. • Products and processes that are less toxic or non-toxic such as non-petroleum base cleaning products, low VOC paints and bio based plastics. • Recycled content is green and so is the term recyclable. • A technology, product or service that saves energy, water or resource. • Fair Trade products are considered green.

"is my microphone on?

Can You Hear Me?"

Greta Thunberg: To the House of Parliament London, April 23, 2019 by Diane Parnell There is an old saying that "out-of-themouths-of-babes comes truth or wisdom." Greta Thunberg, the sixteen-year-old Swedish climate activist who captured the world’s attention with her clear messaging about the climate crisis, could be the poster child for this phrase. We have all heard her name but have we really listened to her words? Here are some of the wise truths from this teenager that have impressed me: This is not political. It is not fear-mongering. This is science. People say that I oversimplify the climate crisis by calling it a black and white issue. Yes, it is the most complex issue that we have ever faced. But the solution is black and white: we need to stop the emissions of greenhouse gases. Because either we limit the warming to 1.5°C over preindustrial levels or we don’t. Either we reach a tipping point where we start a chain reaction with events way beyond human control, or we don’t. Either we go on as a civilization, or we don’t. There are no gray areas when it comes to survival. I want you to panic. To feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act. Greta is right on all counts. But I do wonder. Is her microphone on? Can we hear her? Getty Images 14

Can't Sleep? try a sleep slim smoothie! Cherries are one of the richest known sources of melatonin, the sleep hormone that recent studies have shown can also help reverse the effects of aging, while bananas contain loads of magnesium, a calming mineral. Almonds contain both tryptophan, an amino acid that acts as a sedative and magnesium, which acts as a muscle relaxant. Ingredients: 1 cup organic tart cherry juice / ½ banana / ½ cup almond milk / 5 ice cubes / ¼ tsp pure vanilla extract. Combine the cherry juice, banana, almond milk, ice and vanilla in a blender and blend until smooth.

the nine best

House

for removing

Though the options for purifying your indoor air are numerous, one of the greenest ways to rid your home or office of indoor air pollutants is by placing various houseplants every 100 square feet. Be sure to keep some of these living greens around to limit the benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene you're breathing in every day. 1) Heartleaf Philodendron (Philodendron scandens): One of the most common houseplants, it is also the best at filtering common indoor air toxins. Also known as parlor ivy, or the sweetheart vine. It is very tolerant of a range of conditions, making it the perfect houseplant for beginners. 2) Elephant Ear Philodendron (Philodendron domesticum): Also known as spade leaf philodendron. It is best known for its narrow, arrow-shaped leave that can be anywhere from 18 to 24 inches long. 3) Massangeana (Dracaena fragrans): Also known as the corn plant, or variegated dragon fly. This member of the 16

climbing vines of the Hedera helix can be trained to form topiaries or allowed to cascade over pots. 5) Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum): Native to South Africa, spider plants are very easy to propogate and are probably best known for smaller plantlets ("spider babies") that hang from the larger rosette. Spider plants sprout long, grass-like leaves, and

flower small, white buds. 6) Janet Craig Dracaena (Dracaena deremensis): An easy to maintain, slow grower of houseplants. Known for large, glossy leaves that originate from a central stem, this houseplant can grow very tall, and works well as a floor plant. 7) Warneck Dracaena or 'Warneckii' (Dracaena deremensis): A native of tropical Africa, the Warneckii is a tree-like houseplant that can grow up to a height of 12 feet. it is best described as a floor plant, with broad, green (or green and white striped) leaves that form a tropical cluster atop a long, thin stem. 8) Weeping Fig (Ficus benjamina): The fig, or ficus, tree is a very popular floor tree that rids indoor air of natural toxins. Though this tree can grow up to 50 feet wide and 100 feet tall, it is very well suited for inside the home for many years. 9) Golden Pothos (Epipiremnum aureum): Also known as Devil's ivy, a low-growing vine plant that is very easy to grow. With gold-marbled leaves, this native to the Solomon Islands has four varieties that are all cared for in the same way.

do you have a weakened

Immune System? by Carolyn Dean, ND

Magnesium deficiency and yeast overgrowth are two conditions that you may not even know exist. Silently and relentlessly they weaken the immune system and can lead to chronic inflammation and chronic disease.

Eighty percent of known metabolic functions and 1,000 enzyme systems depend on magnesium to make energy, relax muscles, support the adrenals, keep the heart beating normally, control blood pressure, stop inflammation, and dozens of other tasks that can prevent over 65 misdiagnosed health conditions that are really magnesium deficiency. When magnesium deficiency symptoms are not treated by supplementing with magnesium, drugs are prescribed leading to more magnesium deficiency symptoms all of which weaken the immune system leaving us vulnerable to more disease. Intestinal yeast overgrowth is very common and occurs when the normal yeast in the intestines grows out of control under the influence of antibiotics, cortisone drugs, the birth control pill, and a high sugar intake. Toxins from yeast number close to 180 and are responsible for brain fog, sinus infections, rashes, joint pain, IBS, anxiety, depression, and dozens of other symptoms. let's make

Tiffins a trend!

by Katy Budge

Several communities – including the County of San Luis Obispo – are jumping on the “ban wagon” to prohibit Styrofoam products, and rightly so. Though very convenient for restaurant to-go orders and bringing home leftovers, those items are made of nonbiodegradable polystyrene. Moreover, they are typically used only once before heading for the landfill. However, you won’t lose the convenience of these products if you go the tiffin route! A tiffin is essentially a box that clamps shut, typically round and made of metal. It’s often used for transporting food, be it a meal or bringing home restaurant leftovers. As the wise knower of all things – aka Wikipedia – states: “ ‘Tiffin’ is an Anglo-Indian word, derived from obsolete English slang ‘tiffing’ (to sip), for a light lunch or afternoon snack, and sometimes, by extension, for the box it is carried in.”

The bottom line is that using a tiffin saves on packaging, especially all those Styrofoam clamshells. And, because tiffins are made of metal, they’re easy-peasy to clean by hand or in the dishwasher. Of course, any reusable container could fit the bill too, but obviously a tiffin isn’t as fragile as glass, and it’s not a plastic container – which will ultimately end up in the landfill like the Styrofoam we’re trying to avoid in the first place. Though it’s not very feasible to package to-go orders in your tiffin, you can bring it to a restaurant and pack up your leftovers. I’ve found this often sparks some fun conversation, usually with the server. Perhaps initially they think I’m trying to steal the salt and pepper shakers, but once I explain the concept and point out that it saves on to-go containers, they usually think my tidy tiffin is pretty darn cool!

what is

Cupping? by Jenny Dull-Frost L.Ac. The ancient art of cupping has been utilized by healers and lay people in many cultures. Cupping is a suction technique designed to pull toxin build-up and injury from the body’s deeper tissue to the surface of the skin. Cupping also rehydrates the muscle layers and fascia.

The cells of the body use oxygen and give off carbon dioxide; when the energy is blocked, the cell waste or carbon dioxide becomes blocked. This is called acid or toxic build-up. Physical pain implies a blockage in the flow of energy through a particular area. When toxins or cell waste stagnate in the muscles or joints, it can be very difficult for the body to get rid of this waste, causing further blockage and discomfort. I have found that by utilizing cupping techniques I am able to pull the blockage out of the deeper tissue and move it to the skin’s surface. Once on the surface, it is much easier for the body to eliminate toxins through the superficial blood supply or capillary system. In only ten minutes of cupping, we can pull toxin build-up out of specific areas and also pull fresh new blood into those areas, which revitalizes and restores proper blood flow. www.branchesofwellnessacupuncture.com

Pizza! The story of pizza is long and unsure. The term ‘pizza’ first appeared in a Latin text from the southern Italian town of Gaeta. In the 16th century in Naples, flatbread was referred to as pizza. The first “pomodoro and mozzarella” pizza was prepared in Napoli around mid 1800, during the visit of Italian King Umberto I and his wife, Queen Margherita. The story is that Raffaele Esposito, the best pizza chef of that time, made three different pizzas for the King and Queen. One of these was with tomato puree and mozzarella. The Queen loved this pizza, and thanked chef Raffaele in writing. Since then, tomato puree and mozzarella pizza is called Margherita.

what is Osteopathy? by Kathryn A. Perry, DO

I am frequently asked, “What exactly do you do?” I am a DO, Doctor of Osteopathy. In the US, there are two paths to become a physician. The most known path produces physicians known as MD’s, Medical Doctors. The other includes exactly the same scientific training that MD’s get but it also includes how the musculoskeletal system interacts with all the specific medical conditions. DO’s and MD’s both complete a medical school, board examinations and residency training. In today’s medicine, most are indistinguishable. Some still utilize the traditional hands-on manipulative medicine. We acknowledge the dynamic choice that the body makes every single moment as it works toward its’ own self-healing or homeostatic process. We are trained to look at a patient’s medical condition from this

22

Solstice Green Directory - Spring 2020

comprehensive, more holistic, viewpoint. My practice utilizes very fine motion that has body-wide expression known as Osteopathy in the Cranial Field. This work is very helpful for patient’s living with chronic conditions who have trouble with more aggressive manipulation. It works with gentle precise techniques to assist the realigning of the whole body with itself. This allows, not only for freer and less painful movement, but also increased nutritional support into the tissues, waste elimination out of the tissues, better nervous system communication with the whole body including organs, muscles and bones. This work assists the homeostatic process to be more effective and efficient. Healing is best left up to the body itself. It does, however, occasionally need assistance with antibiotics, surgery, or casting for a fracture on the way to healing. Sometimes, the assistance it really needs is support for its own healing mechanism. Traditional Osteopathy provides that assistance.

Quick Facts: If everyone in America recycled their junk mail, $370 million in landfill dumping fees could be saved each year.

Recycle everything you can!

That means glass, plastic bottles, cans, cardboard and newspapers to name a few. Ziplock type plastic bags may take anywhere from 1,200 to 2,000 years to decompose, so why not wash and recycle them. A glass bottle can take up to 4,000 years to become part of the natural landscape. This means the glass bottles you throw out today may not blend back into nature until the 61st century!

fine tune your

Brain's Orchestra! improve your cognitive health

by David Marquis, DC, DACBN

Electroencephalography (EEG) is an invaluable tool to track and help tune five primary frequencies (Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, & Gamma) so your brain plays a beautiful symphony. Identifying specific frequencies provides an opportunity to track brain health over time as well as identify cognitive decline and the extent of traumatic brain injury (TBI). EEG observes the electrical “signature that tells a very detailed story of how your brain is functioning. How these frequencies blend and coordinate is what makes us function, from how we sleep, our capacity to concentrate and remember information, to how well we keep our cool under stress. It is also essential in evaluating the extent of

24

Solstice Green Directory - Spring 2020

residual TBI. If someone is using THC, over-the-counter medication and/ or prescription drugs, the electrical signature remaining in the brain is quite apparent on an EEG. This information helps determine other alternative strategies to reduce or eliminate their symptoms. If electric patterns of the temporal lobe are slowing, this is often indicative of cognitive decline. Also, if undesirable electrical and vascular patterns are observed, individualized brain training and dietary support and implement oxygenative therapies can be utilized to preserve and improve brain function and in some cases, reverse cognitive deficits. www.DrDavidMarquis.com

Seaweed? There are so many delicious ways to include sea vegetables in your diet. Experiment with a couple of these popular seaweeds, and begin to reap the benefits of good health and wellness. Wakame: The pigment from this seaweed, fucoxanthin, helps to improve insulin resistance and burn fatty tissue. Purchase dried leaves, and then soak them in cold water until soft, for use in salads, whole grain rice bowls, and miso soup. Nori: This common type of seaweed is the richest in protein, containing up to 50% of its weight of this vital nutrient. Nori is packed with Vitamin C, which acts as an antioxidant to destroy free radicals in the body. You’ll find Nori as a base for making sushi wraps, or in small sheets that are perfect for snacking. Arame: Want to up your potassium intake? Eat more arame, and also benefit from a wide range of nutritive properties like antiviral compounds and substances, which help keep extra weight off. Arame tastes outstanding in stir-fries! Kombu: This seaweed is one of the best sources of iodine available.

Nail Polish go green! by Margaret De Stefano

Nail polishes today tend to be synthetic chemical cocktails often comprised of the "toxic trio," formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate. With over 50% of women using nail polish worldwide, that means a lot of toxic waste not only placed in direct contact with humans but the waste is also of concern to the environment. It is recommended to NOT recycle nail polish jars (even though they are glass) because of the toxic contamination. In fact, it is advised not to throw your used jars into your general waste but instead to dispose

26

Solstice Green Directory - Spring 2020

of them at a hazardous waste facility! Surely this gives us a hint as to its contents. Instead, look for 'green' nail polish products that are often waterbased or plant based and contain no petroleum products. Or how about natural manicured nails, they look great too and will save you money on the toxic option. Ditching the nail polish altogether for some people may be an easy greening step.

garden from seed! This is a great kids project. Fill the cups of a paper egg carton (not styrofoam) with soil and place a seed in each one. Once the seedlings have sprouted, simply snip each cup free and pop them straight into the soil. The cardboard will decompose as your young garden grows. If you don't eat eggs, ask your neighbors to save a few cartons for you!

TO HAVE

Walking Good for body and mind! Spring is a great time to start walking. The benefits have been documented for decades. It can contribute to weight loss, improve mental health, and lengthen life. You don’t need a gym membership or expensive equipment, just two legs and a place to start. This low-impact exercise does a lot to help you stay fit without being hard on your joints. If you live near a grocery store and only need a few items, walk instead of drive. If you have school age kids, pick a day a week to walk with them to school. If you have a dog, give him a few extra blocks on your evening stroll, and instead of heading to the sofa after dinner, head outside for a jaunt. It’s good for the body and the mind.

Money... give it freely!

by Margaret De Stefano

At the turn of the twentieth century, a Scottish-born steel tycoon named Andrew Carnegie became the world’s second richest man. He was 66 years old in 1901 when he retired, and he believed people with means were morally obligated to do good with their money. Over the next ten years, Carnegie focused on largescale philanthropy. He funded scientific and medical research. He established pension funds for teachers and professors. He built more than 3,000 public libraries and gave vast sums of money to universities. He loved music and funded music conservatories and donated money to build organs. He gave away money to promote world peace. Today his name is synonymous with having created something of value for many people. Yet another case involves a well-known author who conducted a series of personal experiments. He started to give things away, all the while progressing in his business. At first, a sweater he valued. Then, a book he enjoyed and wanted to keep. Finally, a gift certificate to a fine restaurant. At first, he felt a sense of loss and was troubled. After awhile, he began to notice a strange pattern: although he would give without expecting a reward, rewards–tangible and otherwise–often came in return. Whatever he gave away, he seemed to gain back more. Returns varied from self-respect, a boosted mood, or simply a returned favor. One surprise was a happier client, who brought increased business traffic back to him. We never fully know what good can happen when we give money away. Giving money away blindly is not what this is about. It’s vital to research whatever cause you choose to give to.

Take Out the Trash! lymphatic health

A healthy lymph system is imperative to optimal whole health. The lymphatic network is similar to our commercial trash collector’s routine pickup and disposal system. It is designed to keep our cities, towns and neighborhoods clean and healthy. When trash collectors don’t feel supported and go on strike, we all know or can imagine how quickly the waste can becomes toxic, creating a foul odor and facilitating the development of disease. Our lymph system is unlike the venous system that has the heart constantly pumping blood through it. Lymphatics need support in doing the job of collecting debris that cells put out for pick up and disposal. Easy ways to support your personal trash collector is to get movin’! Yoga, utilize a mini-trampoline, and regular resistance exercise are great strategies. Enjoying Epsom salt baths and/or saunas (wet, dry, infrared…) are excellent options. You can also practice dry brushing, self-lymphatic massage or get routine massages. These practices help us avoid lymphatic congestion that can cause inflammation which is at the root of almost all disease. Eating real food and avoiding foods with preservatives, sugar and gluten will also make your lymph system happy! what a

Waste... literally!

by Margaret De Stefano

In 2018, humans generated approximately 2.01 billion tons of waste worldwide. To put things into perspective, 2.01 billion tons is comparable to 287,142,857 elephants or 275,342 Eiffel Towers. Certainly, that volume of waste sent into landfills is a significant concern. And along with it, potentially reusable resources are continuously wasted as a result of careless disposal. Even more shocking, e-waste is responsible for 50 million tons of the total generated waste produced each year. Not to mention, it accounts for 70% of the toxic waste lying in landfills. When dealing with the improper disposal of e-waste hazardous materials, there is a constant risk of land and water pollution through contamination. For example, batteries leak heavy metals such as lead, barium, and lithium into the soil when placed in a landfill. As a result, these heavy metals seep into groundwater channels, which eventually enter larger bodies of water like ponds or streams. It is Estimated that the number of connected devices will reach 31 billion by 2020.

Growing concerns...

by Hepsharat Amadi, MD

As we all read more about climate change, it's only natural to wonder what we can do individually to prevent climate degradation. Fortunately, all of our lifestyle choices influence the environment, so we all have more power than we might realize. The choice of how much meat or dairy or fish we consume all has environmental implications as does whether our food is grown locally or transported from far away. But one of the biggest choices we make that affects our environment (as well as our body's directly) is the choice of whether to eat or grow produce conventionally or whether to eat/grow organic.

The choice to grow food organically enriches the soil whereas conventional agriculture drains it of minerals and organisms (like earthworms) that aerate the soil and help it to be healthier. The use of insecticides winds up killing beneficial insects like bees and chemical herbicides not only make the soil toxic but herbicides (like "RoundUp"= glyphosate) and synthetic fertilizers leach into groundwater and find their way into the ocean where they produce dead zones and toxic algae blooms. Organic produce contains more trace minerals than conventional produce. Strategic planting of marigolds can protect crops from certain animal predators and allowing wildflowers and "weeds" like dandelion to grow helps support bees, which helps to pollinate foods that humans need. Humans have evolved eating organic food and that is part of what regenerative agriculture is all about: life-sustaining for people and healthier for the planet as a whole. www.dramadi.com

each day is

Mother Earth Day! by The “Green” Franciscan Sister, Janet Corcoran, OSF A gentleman who was born in 1182 and died in 1226 demonstrated a reverence for all of creation. He is known as St. Francis of Assisi. In 1979, he was proclaimed the Patron Saint of Ecology in the Catholic Church because of his inclusiveness and reverence for all of creation. St. Francis considered everyone and everything as brother and sister to him, and he is often quoted by various philosophies and religions because of his respect for all of creation. St. Francis had "heart-ti-tude" for all. Each day was Mother Earth Day to him. In the United States, a day is set aside to specifically focus on the respect for all of creation. It is known as Earth Day. It is said that a man named John McConnell came up with the idea for Mother Earth Day. John submitted a proposal to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors that was approved for the inauguration of the first Mother Earth Day. Therefore, Mother Earth Day was held on March 21, 1970 in the city and county of San Francisco. Meanwhile, Senator Gaylord Nelson is also referred to as the originator of Mother Earth Day. In the spring of 1970 he announced that a nationwide Earth Day would take place on April 22, 1970. In some areas it is observed on other days. However, both men took positive actions to make us more aware of our responsibility to be environmentally friendly in our day-to-day lives. Let's keep in mind the words of Kermit the Frog, “It ain’t easy being green.” Each day is Mother Earth Day! 35

Gingivitis...

what exactly is it? by Annette Meszaros, RDHAP

What causes gingivitis? Plaque (bacteria) also called biofilm is a sticky film that is always on your teeth. Plaque hardens when it's left on your teeth and gums. Hardened plaque is also called tartar or calculus. Bacteria that live in the plaque can cause your body to react and your gums to become inflamed. Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease (gum disease) red, swollen gums that bleed easily. Gingivitis can be reversed with professional cleanings by a registered dental hygienist or dentist every six months and keeping up with your dental homecare on a daily basis. It is recommended to use a soft bristle manuel toothbrush or electric toothbrush two times a day and brush for two minutes each time. Flossing, or other interdental cleaners like soft-pics, proxy-brushes are essential to clean between the teeth. If gingivitis is

36

Solstice Green Directory - Spring 2020

untreated it can affect the tissues and bone that support your teeth. (Periodontal disease) When the gums are left swollen they start to pull away from the teeth and you start to form spaces called pockets. As the bacteria stay in the pockets, your gum disease will get worse. The bacteria in the pockets produce toxins. Your body responds by breaking down the gum tissues and bone around your teeth. You don't have to lose teeth to gum disease. The key is visiting a dental professional regularly for prevention and treatment of oral disease and eating a healthy diet that limits sugar beverages and snacks. www.ashannig.vpweb.com

Vaping

hazardous to your health!

The long-term health risks of heavy vaping are still unknown. Many flavors contain diacetyl and other toxic chemicals, which have the potential to cause lung damage. The epidemic of vaping-related illnesses that are sweeping the country, currently over 500 patients with eight deaths, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), do not appear to be due to standard e-cigarettes. The damage to the lungs appears to be the result of oil, a condition known as lipoid pneumonia, whereas most if not all e-cigarette products available in convenience stores are water-based. In states where THC or CBD vape products are legal, it is not clear that FDA has jurisdiction unless the product is making inappropriate medical claims. This regulatory gap is part of why there are no set standards. CBD oil, derived from hemp, is now legal throughout the U.S., provided that it doesn’t have more than 0.3 percent THC and it is no longer a controlled substance, making it even more difficult to regulate. All vaping devices share the hype of a perceived medical benefit, whether they state this benefit openly, but without proof, or not. We already know enough to say that vaping is bad for you and vaping oil-based products is far worse. Unfortunately, it is far too late to turn back the clock and make vaping available by prescription-only. But it is not too late to define a standard for devices and mixtures and apply it across the board. It is imperative that we do a better job of policing the suppliers of illegal vapes, too. The life and lungs of so many young people are at stake. 38

Shopping Online safely! While convenience is often cited as the biggest benefit to shopping online, safety is typically the greatest concern. Many online stores may not encrypt the credit cards that you give them and store them in a database that makes them vulnerable to hackers. This puts you at risk for abuse of your credit card or even worse, identity theft. When shopping elsewhere online, many credit card companies have responded to this risk by allowing you to obtain a temporary credit card that is only good for one time. Check your credit card's website for information. Further, sites that display "https" before their address when you're entering sensitive information and those displaying certification symbols from TRUSTe and other organizations are among the safest sites on the Web, so look for them before you buy.

DIY Baby Food... yes! by Margaret De Stefano

When you're starting out with a new baby, breastfeeding is the healthiest, most convenient and eco-friendly option. If it works for you, go for it. Once you're on to solid foods, there are a lot of options out there but those increasing options seem to have been accompanied by an increasing level of packaging. Pre-made food might win on convenience (and yes, we acknowledge the persuasive power of persistent toddlers at supermarkets) but if you have the time, cooking with fresh ingredients is cheaper and healthier, involves less packaging (so long as your veggies don't come wrapped in 10 layers of plastic) and you can guarantee it has less sugar and salt in it too. Simply put in the blender, divide it into meal-sized containers, and you have several healthy meals ready to go. The trick to making this work often lies in planning ahead so you're less tempted to grab convenience food out of desperation. For those who find assurance in order, there's also a lot of comfort to be gained from planning your meals for the week and shopping to suit. Research suggests that shopping with a list is also the best way to avoid food waste and save money too. 40

Clean and Green

by Diane Parnell

"I started CLEANO to save water washing my stainless steel microbrewery equipment," says Steve Lach, cofounder of CLEANO Inc., which he started in 2013. Lach wanted a cleaning product that was free of the harmful chemicals that cause respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and cancers. He had serviced airplanes and helicopters prior to owning the Mariposa Brewing Company, and remembered how the pilots and aircraft crews had to wear protective gear when washing the crafts. Through the collaboration of his partner, retired Los Angeles County Sheriff Lyle Smith, and his brother who is a microbiologist, Lach developed the revolutionary and truly green cleaning alternative, CLEANO. "We manufacture the finest VOC free industrial strength Green Cleaner concentrate on the planet, and service homes, industry, and aviation clients worldwide," Lach says with pride. "Quit using poisons to clean your part of Mother Earth. CLEANO makes a real difference!" Find us at: www.cleano.net or call: (855) 962-7562

can

Dogs make our Hearts

healthier? by Margaret De Stefano

It's a fact. We love our animals. But, what if it came with a benefit that might be a pleasant surprise? Recent studies have proven that apart from having a faithful companion, dog owners tend to have better cardiovascular health and physical stamina. In the study called The Kardiovize Brno 2030, researchers studied a population from Central Europe that was made up of 1769 people, aged from 25 to 64 years old, 44.3% of them males, and with no history of heart diseases. Within a couple of years researchers compared dog owners and people who had other pets or no pets at all across parameters like cardiovascular health, physical activity levels, blood pressure, smoking, etc.. Out of all the patients, 24.3% had a dog, and it turned out this group of people smoked less, were more

42

Solstice Green Directory - Spring 2020

physically active, and had ideal levels of blood glucose and “good cholesterol compared with other participants. These and other physical parameters resulted in better cardiovascular health and lower risk of heart diseases. Scientists explain these health benefits by the fact that dog owners are more physically active than people who have other pets or no pets at all. If you have a dog, you’re most likely walking him or her yourself, rain or shine, and being more physically active than many other people without even noticing it. Other findings also revealed that young and elderly people walk their pets more often and consequently have higher health benefits, and that dogs one year old or younger and dogs of large breeds were walked more often and for longer periods of time respectively. So, if you have a pooch, congratulations. If not, maybe you should give it some thought!

Raising an

Earth-Friendly So, how do we get the next generation to reduce, reuse, recycle and embrace the other basics of environmental responsibility? The best way to teach is to be a good role model yourself. Here are some easy ways to start: Recycle: Recycling begins at home. It's easy, and in some communities, mandatory. Kids can sort (and rinse, if necessary) items, place them in the correct bins, and take the containers out to the curb for collection. After the bins have been emptied, ask your kids to rinse them out (if they're dirty) and bring them

44

back into the house or garage. Be kind to the sea life: Plastics that end up as ocean debris contribute to habitat destruction and entangle and kill tens of thousands of marine animals each year. To limit impact ask children to carry a reusable water bottle, and store their food in nondisposable containers, and of course, recycle whenever possible. Teach respect for the outdoors: Go for a brief nature walk, learn lessons outdoors, observe wildlife, or simply relax in nature. Such experiences can be exhilarating, fun and inspirational. For the next generation, they are an essential part of life if we want them to protect Earth for the generation after them. There’s no reason why young children can’t learn to respect and cherish the

environment, simply by developing a relationship with the nature that surrounds them. Younger children have the capacity to learn about the earth and to begin to cherish it, which will make more complex lessons even more teachable in the future. Get involved in community work: Our beaches are the bridge between our world and the ocean. Beaches are fragile environments and we must be attentive in how we treat these stretches of land. The sand and surf is far more than a place to build sand castles and take a dive. Pitch in to help clean up a local beach. Wear sustainable fashion brands: Alternatives do exist.

The solution lies in buying less and choosing better quality items that are made as ethically as possible. If we’re going to make an impact for our future generations it makes sense that their wardrobes be sustainable too.

Avocados don't have to turn brown! Don't you hate how the sliced half that you store in the fridge turns brown and dry so quickly after slicing in half? Here are ways to keep your avocado fresh and green even after storing: Sealable Bag: Place the avocado inside a sealable bag and suck or squeeze out the air from the bag before sealing it. This method prevents the air from coming in contact with the avocado flesh. Olive Oil: Brush the exposed part of the avocado with olive oil before placing it in an airtight container. The olive oil serves as a ‘barrier’ between the air and the flesh, preventing the discoloration of the avocado. Lemon or Lime Juice: Slice a lemon in half and squeeze the juice on the avocado flesh, then place it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The

46

acid found in the lemon juice is known to inhibit oxidation. Onion Chunks: Slice an onion into big chunks and put it in a container. Place the avocado on top of the chunks, then cover the container and store it in the fridge. You may also put some more chunks on top of the avocado to achieve better results. This method is the best one so far, and it has been proven by many avocado lovers out there.

WHY SOLSTICE? We have been asked many times why we chose the name Solstice for our Green Directory. Twice each year, the Earth is at a point in its orbit, where one hemisphere is most inclined away from the Sun. This causes the Sun to appear at its farthest below the celestial equator when viewed from the far hemisphere. It creates the longest day (summer) or longest night (winter). The Sun appears to “stand still,” which is the literal Latin translation of the word solstice. It can go no further before returning to balance. It then begins its journey back to the point of equinox (equal day and night). We are now at the point of “solstice” for our species and all living things on Earth. We too must begin our journey back to balance on this beautiful shimmering blue planet we call home, if we are to survive.

the spring of

Non-Resolution

by Sandy Dunn, PhD, Nutritionist

We are well into 2020 and statistically most have failed at succeeding in maintaining their New Year’s resolutions. Resolutions we make frequently involve self-improvement resolve to “do better”, “try harder” and “be more”. This self-imposed pressure usually creates unrealistic expectations and extra stress, upending our joyfulness. Embrace Spring as an opportunity for non-resolution. Let’s replace resolve with being kind and patient with ourselves. Here are seven simple ways to experience more joy in 2020. 1) Spend time with yourself. Choosing to spend time alone can benefit all your relationships and regulate your emotions. 2) Take time to do nothing at all. Being busy makes you feel harried, joyless and can cause the illusion of being productive. 3) Cultivate more casual friendships. Friendliness with dog-owners at the park, the cashier at the grocery store or your

48

Solstice Green Directory - Spring 2020

favorite bar tender has a positive impact on our well-being by feeling more connected. 4) Fully embrace things when they’re good. Worrying about when “the other shoe will drop” steals your joy and does nothing to diminish disappointment when some things don’t go as desired. 5) Indulge in “guilty” pleasures. Binge watch a favorite TV show or read a trashy novel in moderation. Enjoy the mental break and stop feeling guilty about not being productive. 6) Invest in your health before serving others. Sacrificing your health does not contribute to the well-being of others. 7) Regrets are a signal that the future can be different. Reframe regrets into learning opportunities. Pick up your feet and enjoy yourself and let self-kindness happen. www.WellBelly.net

unwanted memories

by MaryKate Smith, BS Nutrition & Dietetics, HRV Biofeedback Do you suffer from unwanted memories of trauma, heightened reactions, anxiety, or depressed mood? If so, there is a new and upcoming technology called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). This is a noninvasive therapy that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression. First step is to get a quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG), which is an electro-physiologic picture of the brain that allows us to see brain function. During waking hours, our brain functions most optimally in a frequency called alpha. Every one of us has a unique alpha signature. Physical, chemical, and emotional trauma can cause disruption to these brainwaves. This causes certain areas of the brain to cycle out of sync, causing an interruption in the way we process information and the world around us. Once these abnormalities are determined, magnetic stimulation can be used to navigate the area that is not working properly, stimulate it and remind it that it wants to fire at a certain rate. Magnets have a unique property that send energy through the skull to the brain. Repetition and time are needed to allow for a permanent change. Improvements are then measured by redoing a QEEG. These gentle pulses are effortless and highly effective in healing optimal brain function. http://pathwaystohealth.net/neurology

Glossary

descriptions of integrative health/wellness and green/healthy living practices... Acupuncture is a form of health maintenance, which stimulates the body’s ability to correct and balance itself. Based on the ancient Chinese practice of using "punctures" to cure the body of disease and relieve pain. This process is used to channel the chi life force throughout the body by a network of meridians in a continuous flow. Disease is considered to be an imbalanced meridian system, and "needles" are inserted at various points along the meridians to stimulate or disperse the life-force flow to correct the imbalance.

fire, air, water and earth – and illness is an excess of an element.

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses liquid plant materials, known as essential oils (EOs), and other aromatic compounds from plants for the purpose of affecting a person’s mood or health. Essential oils differ in chemical composition from other herbal products because the distillation process only recovers the lighter phytomolecules. Aromatherapy is a generic term that refers to any of the various traditions that make use of essential oils sometimes in combination with other alternative medical practices and beliefs.

CBD Oil is a popular natural remedy used for many common ailments. Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce chronic pain and inflammation. CBD oil has shown promise as a more natural way to alleviate depression and anxiety. It may help reduce symptoms related to side effects related to cancer treatment and recent research has linked CBD with several benefits for the heart and circulatory system.

Ayurveda is an ancient holistic science from India. Said to be more than 5,000 years old, "Ayur" means life and "Ved" means knowledge. Ayurveda is the study of longevity that offers healing, rejuvenation, and selfactualizing therapies utilizing diet, exercise, yoga, herbs, massage, aromas, meditation, mantras and tantras. Ayurveda tradition teaches that health is the balance of elements 50

Biofeedback involves noninvasive, simple electronic monitoring to observe the body’s functions and provide information useful to the healing processes, especially with stress. Using biofeedback information, guided relaxation techniques allow awareness and methods to control particular body reactions. Treatments may address anxiety, pain, migraines, insomnia, muscle spasms, asthma and other stress-related disorders.

Chiropractic Care consists of Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) who are spinal specialists and have completed a four-year course of graduate-level study; a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom and laboratory, and clinical training at an accredited chiropractic college, and passed national and state exams. Chiropractic care specializes in chiropractic adjusting and manipulation, diagnosis, radiology, physical medicine, nutrition and natural therapies with an emphasis on prevention, and drug-free care.

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a system of evaluation and treatment which views the client as an integrated totality and uses gentle, noninvasive techniques to the craniosacral system surrounding the brain and the spinal cord. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) consists of fingertip tapping on meridian points. EFT alleviates negative emotions and experiences. Clinical psychologists David Feinstein and Dawson Church, award winning author, The Genie in Your Genes, confirmed through their landmark study tapping on specific meridian points has a positive effect on cortisol levels, the “stress hormone.” Research suggests EFT is effective because it helps to balance the activity of the parasympathetic and sympathetic regions of the brain, making it a powerful healing tool. Herbalists practice ancient healing procedures by using plants, and their derivatives, as preventative and curative medicine. Whole herbs retain their subtle ingredients needed to balance the body to catalyst the healing process, without harmful side effects of synthetic drugs. Herbs are used for internal and external treatments using teas, ointments, oils, compresses, tinctures, and extracts. Homeopathy is a holistic therapy developed in Germany over 200 years ago by physician, Samuel Hahnemann. Homeopathy is based upon the belief that “like cures like,” and uses small doses of natural remedies created from herbal, mineral and animal substances. Meditation is the deep relaxation of the body to heal the body, quiet the mind, and provide the client with a sense of inner balance. Meditation can be a state of focused or mindful attention, which can include the use of sitting posture, imagery, mantras, control of

breath, and observation – all to allow thoughts to emerge and pass without becoming engaged with them. Organically Grown food is processed and grown without using pesticides, such as herbicides and insecticides, preservatives, colorings or radiation. Certified Organic Food is grown on land where no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides have been used for three years; where there has been an inspection by an independent third party; and the producer has provided documentation such as soil tests, a statement of intent, and an affidavit. Osteopathy is a form of drug-free noninvasive manual medicine that focuses on total body health by treating and strengthening the musculoskeletal framework, which includes the joints, muscles and spine. Its aim is to positively affect the body's nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems. Reiki means universal life-force energy, and is a scientific way to activate and balance the life-force energy (chi, prana, qi) present in all living things. One method used is light handplacement therapy that is used to channel energy to organs and glands. Reflexology or zone therapy, is the practice of massaging, squeezing, or pushing on parts of the feet, or sometimes the hands and ears, with the goal of encouraging a beneficial effect on other parts of the body, or to improve general health. Sound Vibration Therapy is based on the fact that the universe is in a constant state of vibration; therefore, the body’s cells are constantly vibrating. Sound vibration therapy employs the direct application of the voice, music, and other sounds.

Everything comes Full Circle

...well maybe not? by Margaret De Stefano

To misquote Bob Dylan: "the times may, at long, long last, be a-changing." Basically, our economy is a one-way street. Someone makes stuff, we buy it, use it then throw it away. This is done without much thought to the consequence. By contrast, a "circular" economy gets the most out of the resources we use by keeping them in use as long as they have a value. It requires the manufacturer to make things that are designed to last, not single use, able to be repaired, and when it comes to their end-of-life can be taken apart, reused or recycled into other stuff. This however requires a change in the mindset of all aspects of

52

Solstice Green Directory - Spring 2020

the economy. It’s about changing our approach to stuff. moving away from throw-away fashion, and badly made appliances that break down soon after the warranty runs out. It’s global technology redesigning products with a longer life, home builders delivering more energy efficient homes, the fashion industry taking a longer-term view of "seasonal collections," a better approach to the maddening excess packaging, and much, much more. It's what’s known as the "circular" economy. It seems that more and more people are becoming sensitive and uncomfortable to the status quo. Could something be growing in public consciousness? Here's hoping that this year will be the start towards that so much more resourceful "circular" world!
