There is hope if people will begin to awaken that spiritual part of them, that heartfelt knowledge that we are caretakers of this planet. ~ Brooke Medicine Eagle
an easy 2-minute Reset for Stress... In this chaotic, stressful and daily changing world, do you ever feel a deep need for quiet? It feels like everything is screaming for attention around us. It's loud and deafening. I am hearing this same thing from so many people. We need a way to quiet things down and rebalance our mind. I don't mean only the absence of noise, but a way to access that inner stillness that lies just beneath the constant stream of thoughts, feelings, and obligations. This stillness is more than just relaxation; it’s a direct path back to your center of calm. Relaxation is not the absence of sound, but the presence of stillness. Last week I learned something that really helps. To achieve calm, try this little easy little 2-minute sensory reset: Find a quiet place and sit comfortably. First, close your eyes and focus on your breathing for 60 seconds. Notice the cool air entering and the warm air leaving, this anchors you to the present. Next, open your eyes and select a single object in the room, like a houseplant or a small stone. For the remaining 60 seconds, focus only on its details: its color, its texture, the way the light hits it. When thoughts creep in, gently redirect your focus back to the object or your breath. This small, intentional act interrupts the mental noise, proving that stillness is a choice, not a circumstance. I hope it helps!

Wave of Wellness
washes over Grover Beach! by Margaret De Stefano Grover Beach is home to a ground-breaking approach to well-being. Energetic Pathways, offers sessions with the Energy Enhancement System (EESystem), the cuttingedge technology, which has garnered global attention with over 500 centers worldwide, designed to support the body’s natural ability to heal, rejuvenate, and find balance. Developed by Dr. Sandra Rose Michael, the EESystem uses bio-active life-enhancing energy fields, including scalar waves, to create a harmonizing environment. Visitors simply sit in a comfortable chair within a specially equipped room, where a series of monitors emit these unique frequencies. The experience is entirely passive and noninvasive, allowing the body to absorb the energy and work toward a state of equilibrium. By helping to recharge the body at a cellular level, the system aims to promote better sleep, reduce pain, and support emotional balance. The center makes these revitalizing sessions more accessible to the community, offering a quiet sanctuary where individuals can escape the demands of daily life and immerse themselves in a rejuvenating Top Row: Terryl Walters, energetic bath. Food Banks step up Our local food banks are the front lines of the ongoing struggle to provide our communities with basic nutritional needs. These non-profit organizations can use our help, in a variety of ways. Often, the first instinct is to donate food, but giving money directly to the food bank is usually a better option. Through cooperative buying programs, the food banks are able to leverage funds by buying in bulk, and having cash lets them purchase what is most specifically needed for their clients. If you do want to donate food, keep in mind the situations of those in need. An unhoused individual has very different requirements than a family with access to a kitchen. For example: buy canned goods with a pop-top open in case the client doesn’t have a can opener; combine that box of cereal with boxed or powered milk in case fresh milk isn’t a possibility; and

basics such as instant coffee, tea bags, and spices are a welcome surprise. Also, don’t forget non-edibles like dish soap and personal hygiene products. Happen to have a prolific fruit tree? Check with local organizations to see if they can accommodate donations of fresh produce. Some might not have the appropriate cold storage, while others would whole-heartedly welcome such a contribution. The gift of time is always appreciated as well. Food banks usually need help sorting, dispensing, and sometimes even cooking meals for clients. If you yourself need help, or know someone who does (check in on your neighbors), there are organizations waiting to assist. Go to the SLO Food Bank’s findfoodslo.org, or CAFoodBanks.org, and/or inquire at a community pantry to see what resources might be available.

Patch Away! Life can be stressful. There are times when we need help with managing pain, getting a good night’s sleep or increasing our energy level. Super Patch is a safe, drug free way to get relief with many of these discomforts. A wearable patch, Super Patches have uniquely arranged, contoured ridges, often compared to a QR code. When these ridges touch the skin, they are said to activate the body's natural haptic vibrotactile triggers. These triggers send unique signals through the nervous system to the brain. The brain then decodes this message, which is intended to produce a desired wellness response. Super Patch recalibrates and resets nerve pathways to help change signals that cause persistent discomfort such as: pain and inflammation, anxiety, stress, and joint bone muscle distress. Super Patch will help break looping

good for your brain?
by Margaret De Stefano
The chemical curcumin that makes turmeric yellow appears to activate a key anti-oxidizing enzyme that reduces plaque buildup in the brain. It also is an anti-inflammatory that may fight some cancers and multiple sclerosis. Power Shower?
by Zoe Allen
The best showers are short and sweet. The average 10 minute shower (using a non efficient shower head) will use up to 66 gallons of water while a four minute power shower with a AAA rated shower head will use only 9 gallons. That's water savings of 85%.

Health News Heart-Smart Fats can omega-3s give your heart a healthy edge? by Margaret De Stefano
A Danish study of 49,000 women that was published in Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association found that women who ate little to no fish had 50 percent more heart problems than those who ate fish at least once per week. Additionally, researchers found that women who rarely ate fish had a threefold higher disease risk than those who ate it often. Omega-3 fatty acids have long been celebrated as nutritional powerhouses, and research continues to support their role in heart health. These essential fats—found in fatty fish like salmon, sardines, and mackerel, as well as flaxseed and walnuts—may help reduce the risk of heart disease through several key mechanisms. Omega-3s are known to lower harmful triglyceride levels, reduce inflammation throughout the body, and support healthy blood vessel function. Some studies also suggest they may help regulate heartbeat and slightly reduce blood pressure, all of which contribute to a healthier cardiovascular system. While supplements can be beneficial for those who don’t get enough Omega-3s from diet alone, experts generally agree that whole foods offer the greatest overall benefit. Incorporating fish or plant-based Omega-3 sources into meals just a few times a week may help strengthen long-term heart health—one delicious serving at a time.

for Women
prescription:
a Daily Dose of Green by Zoe Allen
Ladies, ready for the easiest wellness boost? A ground-breaking study in Environmental Health Perspectives, analyzing data from over 108,000 women in the Nurses' Health Study, found that surrounding yourself with greenery might be the secret to a longer, healthier life. Researchers used satellite imagery to determine the level of vegetation around participants' homes and observed a powerful association: women in the "greenest" areas had a 12% lower overall mortality rate than those in the least green. The health benefits were even more dramatic for specific conditions. Women with high exposure to nature saw a 34% lower risk of respiratoryrelated death and a 13% lower risk
of cancer-related death. While these physical health findings are compelling, researchers were most surprised to find that a large portion of this benefit is linked to improved mental health. It seems nature is a powerful stress reducer and mood booster. It's time to trade the pavement for the park. Is your next appointment with a forest? A Membership Makes A Great Gift!

Wash
smarter by Zoe Allen
It’s no secret that reducing the temperature on your washing machine is a surefire way to save energy around the house. But did you know cooler washes also tend to better preserve the fibers in your favorite clothes, allowing you to enjoy wearing them for longer? Or better yet, doing a “sniff test” before you wash your clothes is a great way to help you save energy. A quick whiff can be a good indicator of whether you can wear those trousers for another day, and cleaning only a specific area or stain can also help keep your garments out of the washing machine for longer. Just dab a bit of stain remover and water on the part that’s dirty, and, voilà, you’ve just gained a few extra wears from your favorite pair of jeans! Mon-Sat 9-7 Sun 9-6 Daily 10-4

build resilience by Investing in
Your Network
by Allen Pritzlaff
22
Winter is the time for indoor social gatherings, especially around the holiday celebrations. While engaged in this, we renew and strengthen our social networks. This is not only fun, but it strengthens our spiritual and emotional resilience by building bonds with others.
Invite members of your community to a soup potluck gathering, where you can play board games, assemble a puzzle together, watch a movie, or just talk. Start planning for gardens that you can plant in the spring – one can plant zucchini and another can plant tomatoes to share. Or, plan for other activities that will build resilience.
True all-around resilience requires investment in energy sources, food, water, transportation, skills, finances, health, and spiritual and emotional resources. No one person, or even a family can be 100% prepared for problems in every one of these areas by themselves. They will need others around them who can fill in their gaps, just as they can fill the gaps of others. As Bill Withers sang, “We all need somebody to lean on.” Be that somebody for another person, and seek people who can do that for you.
Above all, this is also the time to cultivate your connection with your spiritual resources. Read time-tested spiritual literature. Gather with others who are similarly seeking. In January, when things are quieter, make a decision to strengthen your spiritual foundations and draw closer to your community and network in the new year. Happy Holidays!

Faith, Kindness, and Gratitude by Hepsharat Amadi, MD Winter is typically a time when things can appear very bleak. One reason can be because holiday times can recall memories of loved ones who are no longer there. Or it can impose feelings of obligation to pay for gifts one cannot really afford or socialize with family members who grate on one’s nerves or to decorate the house and host gatherings whether one feels like doing so or not. What can one do to resist seasonal blues? Expose oneself to sunlight, especially in the morning, as this helps set the internal circadian rhythm to be able to sleep better at night. Taking a daily walk outside helps us generate some endorphins that improve our mood and manage our stress levels and weight. Dancing indoors, singing, and listening to music can also have similar effects. Donating food, clothes and services also helps to remind us to be grateful for all we have instead of focusing on what we do not have. It can be easy to forget how fortunate we are to have a roof over our heads, food, clothing and clean air and water, when so many people in the world do not

have access to these things or are living in war torn areas. But focusing on gratitude, being kind to others and having faith opens the channels for even more blessings to come in for ourselves and others.

did you Back Up your Back Ups this year? by Mike Stairs Forty years ago, as our documents, photos, and music began to exist entirely as digital files, we faced the problem of long-term digital storage. We used a half-dozen technologies before eventually launching our data off into the clouds. But how safe are your digital memories? Technologies such as floppy disks and tape lose their magnetic charge with time. Even Hard Disk technology only lasts three to five years. CD-ROM and DVD-ROM disks last from five to a claimed more-than-25 years for Blu-Ray, but are easily scratched. USB Flash drives often fail, most with warranties not exceeding a year. Most
recently, high-speed Solid State Hard Drives have become the best option for local bulk storage, lasting three to five years reliably before needing replacement. Though convenient, cloud storage solutions rely on individual email accounts, passwords, and fees, presenting another host of problems. Start every year with a full backup. Pull copies down from the cloud to your own fresh SSD Hard Drive. Don’t let your data scatter and fade! More info: Go! Computer Services: 805.704.0833 gocomputerservices@gmail.com

chair Yoga
by Rachel Nichols
As our bodies age, we need to keep moving to stay healthy and enjoy life. Yoga is a wonderful way for aging bodies to move gently while building strength, increasing flexibility, and decreasing anxiety. But the average public yoga class is not a welcoming place for aging bodies. Students often feel the need to “keep up” with the rest of the class, often at the expense of proper alignment. And while the teacher is present for the students, individualized instruction is not always available. But perhaps the biggest obstacle keeping elders from enjoying a yoga class is the effort it takes to get up and down from the floor. So how do we make the benefits of yoga more accessible to the “silver tsunami,” an expanding segment of our population? Move bodies into chairs. Chair Yoga is a practice where all of the benefits of the poses are realized on a chair rather than the yoga mat. And the chair does not necessarily make yoga poses easier! In fact, chair yogis work up a nice sweat while practicing. We have come a long way since the 2nd century BCE, when Patanjali, the author of the Yoga Sutras, wrote the famous guiding principle, “Sthira 26
Sukham Asanam,” or “the yoga pose is comfortable and steady.” Today, let’s welcome all bodies to receive the benefits of this ancient practice. Pull up a chair, and join yoga instructor Rachel Nichols for a Chair Yoga class at Harmony House Yoga in Pismo Beach on January 11, 2026 from 1-2:15pm.

the Benefits of taking
Berberine
during the Holidays
by Crystal Powell
The holiday season often comes with big meals, sugary treats, disrupted routines, and added stress—all of which can affect how our bodies feel and function. Berberine, a plantbased compound found in herbs like barberry and goldenseal, is commonly used as a natural supplement to support metabolic wellness. While it’s not a cure-all, incorporating berberine during the holidays may offer a few helpful benefits.
digestion. Large meals, unfamiliar dishes, and irregular eating schedules can leave the digestive system sluggish, and berberine’s gentle support may help maintain comfort.
One of berberine’s most notable roles is supporting healthy blood sugar response. Holiday eating often involves richer foods and more frequent indulgences, and berberine may help the body manage these shifts more smoothly. Many people also use berberine to support balanced
Of course, berberine may not be right for everyone. Anyone considering it— especially those taking medications— should speak with a healthcare professional. When used thoughtfully, berberine can be a supportive tool for navigating the holiday season with a bit more balance.
The holidays can also disrupt daily routines, making it harder to stay mindful of wellness habits. Taking a supplement like berberine may help people feel more grounded in their health choices, offering a simple, consistent step amid the seasonal chaos.

The Solstice as a Climate Marker...
connecting with ancient timekeeping by Lori Waters
For thousands of years, the Winter Solstice was more than a celestial event—it was a vital climate marker. Long before satellites and weather apps, communities relied on the sun’s extremes to understand seasonal patterns, predict environmental shifts, and plan their survival. The solstice marked the turning point when daylight slowly returned, signaling when to rest, conserve resources, and prepare for the year ahead. Today, in an age of climate instability, returning to this kind of sky-based awareness offers more than nostalgia, it connects us to our natural world providing clarity. Observing the solstice invites us to notice what is changing

around us: erratic frosts, shifting migratory patterns, altered growing seasons. These are the subtle signals that ancient timekeepers tracked instinctively and that modern life often obscures. By viewing the Winter Solstice not just as a holiday but as a checkpoint, we reconnect with rhythms that sustainability depends on. It becomes a moment to assess our own pattern of energy use, consumption, and food choices, choosing to align them with the ecological cycles still unfolding around us. As the light returns, the solstice reminds us that adaptation begins with paying attention. The sky has always been our calendar; it can still be our guide.
a turning point for
Animal Rights! by Zoe Allen West Hollywood is making history, and not with another celebrity-filled gala. The city has become the first in California to pass a sweeping ban on the retail sale of live animals. This landmark ordinance, which takes effect in 2026, extends beyond the usual cats and dogs to include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, arachnids, and fish. In a move believed to be a national first, the city is also prohibiting the sale of hermit crabs. This bold step solidifies West Hollywood's reputation as a compassionate and forward-thinking community. For years, animal advocates have argued that pet stores contribute to a cycle of animal suffering. Many animals sold in these stores come from large-scale commercial breeders, often kept in inhumane conditions. The new ordinance aims to disrupt this pipeline and encourage residents to adopt pets from shelters and rescues instead. World Animal Protection, a global non-profit, worked directly with the city and Mayor Chelsea Byers to champion the bill. The organization praised West Hollywood for its leadership, noting that the ban sets a powerful precedent for other cities across the country. By focusing on a wide range of species, the ordinance recognizes that all animals, not just traditional pets, deserve protection from the cruelty of the commercial pet trade. This move sends a clear message: West Hollywood is committed to protecting all creatures, great and small. 31
clean Transportation = less Emissions by Madeline Palaszewski
California’s programs to decrease greenhouse gas emissions are working. The state recently released data through the California GHG Emissions Inventory that shows a 3% drop in statewide emissions in 2023. This is the third-largest annual percentage decrease since tracking began in 2000. The decrease is equivalent to removing more than 2.6 million gasoline-powered cars from California’s roads for one year.
32
Solstice Green Directory - Winter 2025-2026
Since 2000, greenhouse gas emissions in California went down by 21% - even as the state’s economy increased 81% in that same period. “This milestone once again confirms that bold climate action can deliver real results,” said California Air Resources Board Chair Lauren Sanchez. “California’s climate pollution is falling even as our economy grows – a powerful testament to the strength of our programs, innovation in clean technology, and the commitment of communities across the state. We’re not just investing in a healthier future; we’re actively building it.”
Oceans of Change by Margaret De Stefano
A historic agreement is now in effect, bringing a new era of protection to the vast, unregulated expanse of the world's oceans. The Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement is a landmark international treaty that officially extends environmental governance to the high seas and the deep seabed. For the first time, this treaty provides a legal framework to establish marine protected areas in international waters, safeguarding vital ecosystems that cover nearly two-thirds of the planet's surface. It's a critical step toward preserving marine life from threats like overfishing and climate change. As the UN Environment Program (UNEP) stated, the real work is just beginning. The focus now shifts to the effective and rapid implementation of the agreement
to ensure the protection of marine biodiversity. This move is a major victory for conservation, benefiting not only the planet's health but also the well-being of future generations. The treaty requires at least 60 countries to ratify it before it can enter into force. This milestone was reached on September 19, 2025, when Morocco and Sierra Leone deposited their instruments of ratification, becoming the 60th and 61st parties to the pact. Following the 60th ratification, a 120-day countdown begins. The treaty will officially become legally binding on January 17, 2026. At that point, it will apply to all countries that have ratified it. For any country that ratifies the treaty after this date, the obligations will take effect 30 days after they deposit their instrument of ratification.

silent Sentinels...
the majesty of the giant sequoias by Margaret Hennessy
Standing tall in the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Giant Sequoias (Sequoiadendron giganteum) are not just trees; they are silent, living monuments to deep time. These colossal conifers inspire an awe rarely matched in the natural world, earning them the title of the planet's most massive organisms. Their sheer scale is staggering. Growing up to 300 feet in height and over 30 feet in diameter, their enormous cinnamon-red trunks seem to defy gravity, reaching skyward for millennia. Indeed, many of these "sentinels" have lived for over 3,000 years, witnessing the rise and fall of civilizations. There is another aspect of life hidden in the lives of these trees. This article from Rob Avis, owner of Calgary-based Verge Permaculture, has a message for all of us at this time: “Most people think sequoias survive because they're massive. But that's not even close to the real reason. If you’ve ever had the privilege standing beside one of these giants, you’ll find it hard NOT to think of resilience. These trees

can live through droughts, fires, storms, and climate shifts that would kill almost anything else. But as an engineer this is what I’m fixated on: The tallest tree in the world has roots that only go 6-12 feet deep. That should be impossible. A 300-foot tree with shallow roots makes no sense from an engineering perspective. But… Sequoias don't survive alone. Their root systems spread 50-80 feet wide and interweave with every other sequoia around them. They share nutrients, water, and structural support. When storms come in, they support each other. The forest is the system: Not the individual trees. I couldn't stop thinking about this. Most people try to build resilience by making themselves bigger, stronger, more independent. They stockpile resources, they build higher walls, they go it alone. But the most resilient systems in nature are interconnected. Maybe the question isn't "how do I become more self-sufficient?" but "how do I become more meaningfully connected to the right systems?"
