Summer afternoon... to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language. ~ Henry James

FEATURES

Food for Thought... Food is central to our culture and it plays a huge role in our health and the health of the environment. Our food system is not sustainable. Our current system’s reliance on a fragile, fossil fuel-centered supply chain to fertilize, toxify (with pesticides and herbicides), transport, store, and package food is the least of our concerns. How about the fact that forty per cent of the world's agricultural land is now seriously degraded? Many people believe a fundamental shift must occur in the way we design our life support systems, one of them being our food system. Given that resources are not infinite, and many are quickly running out, it might be wise for us to think about learning to design systems to grow at least some of our own food, within urban areas. We will need help in future design plans for our major cities, however, we can do our part too. One solution? Grow veggies in our own back yard...grow food instead of lawns!

The choice is ours...yours and mine. The time is NOW to make a difference.

Buy Local... 1) Locally grown or produced food tastes better. In the week long (or more) delay from harvest to dinner table, sugars turn to starches, plant cells shrink and produce loses its vitality. 2) Local food preserves genetic diversity. Local farms grow a huge number of varieties to provide a long season of harvest, an array of eye-catching colors and the best flavors. 3) Local food supports local farm families. Local farmers who sell direct to customers get full price for their food. 4) Local produce is better for you. Recent studies show that fresh produce loses

nutrients quickly. 5) Local food builds community. When you buy direct from the farmer, you are re-establishing a time honored connection between the eater and the grower. 6) Local food preserves open space. When you buy locally grown food, you are doing something proactive about preserving the agricultural landscape. 7) Local food keeps your taxes in check. Local, independent farms contribute more in taxes than they require in services. 8) Keep the money in the neighborhood. For every $100 dollars spent at a locally owned

Local businesses are owned by people who live here, work here, and are more invested in our future. 11) Buy what you want, not what someone else wants you to buy. moisturize

Organically! FEATURES

by Angela Robinson-Platz

If you are looking for an all organic way to moisturize your skin back to beautiful, here’s a great way to do it. After a warm shower, while still standing in the shower stall, use your hands to apply 100% Pure Cold Pressed, Unrefined Organic Jojoba Oil to all parts of your body - even your armpits and face! As you apply the oil, it will blend with the droplets of water left on your skin. Busy yourself, dance, sing or stand in the shower for a minute or two to allow the oil to absorb into your skin. Using your towel, lightly pat dry. Then rub in the oil one more time if needed. You will find that Jojoba Oil moisturizes beautifully, is not very oily and absorbs quickly. When shopping for Jojoba Oil, look for one that has not been extracted with solvents, alcohol or other chemicals. Enjoy!

Phone Chargers are number one!

Have you ever lost the charger for your cell phone and just ran out to spend money on a brand new one? Next time, you might want to think lost and found to score one for free. The next time you're traveling for work or pleasure, ask the front desk if they have a charger in the lost and found box they can loan you. Chargers are the #1 item left behind at hotels and also the least often reclaimed by hotel guests. In most cases, hotels will let you keep the charger for free since the window of 30 days has passed already on dozens–if not hundreds, of chargers up for grabs.

GMOs FEATURES

There are a lot of OMGs to discuss about Genetically Modified Organisms, so let’s take a few common myths off the table. 1. We can prevent Genetically Modified crops from entering our food system. Nope. Too late. According to the Non GMO Project (www.nongmoproject.org), about 90% of the canola, 88% of the corn and 94% of the soy grown in the U.S. is genetically modified. Unless you’re eating certified organic servings of these foods, you’re eating GMOs, and you might still be getting them via cattle, pork or poultry feed. 2. GMOs are perfectly fine and pose no health risks. Well … maybe we’ll find out that this is

so many myths, so little time by Katy Budge indeed true, but consider the time frame within which this statement has been issued. A human generation spans about 40 years; the first GM corn appeared in the 1980s. Is barely one generation enough to study and understand the long term effects of GMOs? Also, this assurance is coming largely from the same company (Monsanto) that also told us Agent Orange and saccharin were okay.

3. Labeling GMOs would just be too expensive and cost the consumer too much money. When they thought it would get marketplace traction, companies were quick to slap “trans-fat,” “gluten free,” and even “no GMOs” on their labels, and at no extra cost to the consumer. And if GM products pose no health risk, what’s the problem with labels?

Smarter... Smart planning for your flower beds around the house can lead to significant water and time savings when caring for your gorgeous flowers. According to National Geographic, consider “companion planting” by grouping certain plants together to help them mutually grow. By planting taller, sun-loving plants in the back with shorter, shade-loving plants in front, they help each other thrive. The taller plants block the sun’s rays and also help reduce evaporation of water on the shorter plants. The symbiotic planting will help your flower beds thrive and almost grow all on their own.

a cooler home

FEATURES

This Summer! Keeping your cool during the hot months can use a lot of costly energy. Here are some tips for maintaining a comfortable home and a lower energy bill: 1. Plant native deciduous trees on the south and west sides of your home. Deciduous trees will give you the shade in summer and sun in winter. 2. Install awnings or some other sort of shading over windows and walls exposed to the sun. 3. Think about double glazing for your windows. Even a tint on your windows will help reflect the heat. 4. Make sure your internal blinds and curtains are well-fitted, covering the entire window and fitted as closely as possible. The thicker the material, the better the insulation properties are. Horizontal blinds and shading devices are more effective for north/south facing windows, and vertical blinds are more effective for east and west facing windows. 5. Inspect, clean, or change air filters once a month in your AC. A dirty air filter can lead not only to less efficiency, but can shorten the life of an AC unit. 6. Insulate your attic. A poorly insulated attic or windows that leak can lead to overworking your fans and AC. 22

Solstice Green Directory - Summer 2014

7. Consider getting a programmable thermostat that will let you set the air conditioner to start half an hour before you get home. This allows you to keep the AC turned off when you don’t need it. Don’t place lamps or TV sets near your air conditioning thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances. 8. Whole-house fans help cool your home by pulling cool air through the house and exhausting warm air through the attic. They work best at night, when the outside air is cooler than the air inside.

Shower

power

The best showers are short and sweet. The average 10 minute shower (using a non efficient shower head) will use up to 66 gallons of water while a 4 minute power shower with a AAA rated shower head will use only 9 gallons. That's water savings of 85 per cent!

Positive! While being skeptical can be a healthy way to avoid getting taken advantage of, being pessimistic, and always assuming the worst, can have major negative consequences on your life. Seeing only the negative aspects of any situation can cause you to miss opportunities, neglect problems that need to be solved, and fail to take action that would otherwise improve your relationships and quality of life. In fact, studies show that pessimists are more likely to develop chronic illnesses later on in life than optimists. Here are some good tips on avoiding negativity: 1) Let go of the assumption that the world is against you: It is an assumption that has no basis in reason or science. The sooner you can attribute your pessimism to a unique set of circumstances rather than the state of the world itself, the easier it'll be to change your perspective. 2) Understand that the past does not equal the future: Do not make a bad start turn into a self fulfilling prophecy for a bad ending. 3) See yourself as a cause, not an effect: You don't have to be a product or a victim of your circumstances. Stop thinking about what is happening to you and start thinking about what you can make happen. 4) Use positive affirmations: Write down short statements that remind you of what you're trying to change about the way you see the world. Put them in places where you'll see them every day. Some are: a) "Anything is possible." b) "I always have a choice." c) "I choose to live my positive side of life." 5) Remember that life is short: Pessimism breeds indecision. It's a waste of time, and time is a limited resource that you can't afford to take for granted. 6) Be a balanced optimist: Prepare for the worst but hope for the best. The former makes you sensible, and the latter makes you an optimist. 24

Calories! Making the right choices in selecting a beverage can potentially save an incredible number of calories each day. Here are some tips that you may find helpful:

Did you know that you can consume over 1,000 calories a day just from liquids alone? If you have a glass of orange juice for breakfast, a latte on your way to work, mid- morning flavored ice tea, soda with lunch and one more sweetened beverage as a pick-me-up mid day, you are almost there. Combine it with a beer or glass of wine after work, and you have reached the equivalent of an entire meal with beverages alone. Milk and fruit juice count as food servings too. According to advice from the American Dietetic Association, you should receive little or no calories from beverages. The solution? Limit your drinks to 10% of total calories (about 200). Choose unsweetened tea, club soda or plain water. How about sparkling water with your choice of berries (as shown), and adding a lemon, lime or orange slice? You can mix a splash of juice for extra flavor and still not compromise your liquid calories. Be creative and save your calories for real food!

what can it clean and why it works?

Lemon juice is an all around natural cleaning wonder. With it, you can remove lime scale, make windows and mirrors shine, polish copper or brass, remove stains from wooden cutting boards, clean and degrease kitchen and bathroom surfaces, remove sweat stains plus many more helpful uses too numerous to mention. Why does it work? Lemon juice is one of the strongest food acids, marked by its sour taste. Because the pH is so low, lemon juice can kill most household bacteria, while also leaving your home smelling fresh.

Peas please

Peas are part of the legume family. Grown in pods, peas are packed with nutrition. There are basically three types: garden peas, snow peas, and snap peas. Peas help to steady blood sugar levels in the body and are packed with 8 vitamins, 7 minerals, protein and fiber. Garden peas may be harvested and removed from the pod, then boiled or dried. Snap peas can be eaten in the pod after boiling. Snow peas are eaten in their entirety, pod and seed. Canned peas should be avoided as they lose most of their nutrient in the canning process and they also have added salt.

delicious and healthy too? Watermelon is known to be high in fiber and nutrients and low in calories. New evidence from a pilot study led by food scientists at Florida State University suggests that eating watermelon might also help dispel pre-hypertension, a precursor to cardiovascular disease. A University of Illinois study estimates that as many as 60 percent of U.S. adults have elevated tension levels. Watermelon is the richest edible natural source of L-citrulline, which is closely related to L-arginine, the amino acid required for the formation of the body’s own natural nitric oxide, essential to the regulation of vascular tone and healthy blood pressure. Once in the body, the L-citrulline naturally converts into L-arginine. It also has been Organic Watermelon Slushie...

small acts make a

Big Difference! We all know how much we appreciate it when someone is kind to us. Small acts of kindness really do make a difference in a big way. It's good to make it a habit to acknowledge and pay forward each bit of kindness that comes your way, whether it's a simple compliment, help on a task or getting someone flowers "just because." According to research published by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the little things and expressing "everyday" gratitude gave a romantic relationship a much better shot of surviving. The study also found that appreciation and gratitude interactions increased relationship connection and overall satisfaction for both men and women. Don't forget to express your feelings often, to those people in your life that you really care about.

what every child should know! Do your children consider the environment when they make decisions? Is sustainability part of their thought process? Every action has a consequence. If you can, make sure the "eco-factor" is present in children's decision making process. Here are some things you can share with your child now that will make them a more eco-conscious adult: 1) Turn off water when brushing your teeth. 2) If you don't finish a glass of water, use it for pets or plants. 3) Keep showers short and use less water for taking a bath. 4) Turn off outside hose when not in use. 5) Wash dishes with just enough water to get the job done. 6) Turn off water when lathering up your hands. 7) Use clothes washer only for a full load. 8) If you wash your bike do it on the grass so you don't waste water.

Travel FEATURES

Are you doing some traveling this summer? Take a small step towards reducing the impact of global warming by planning an ecofriendly vacation. Here are some helpful tips:

34

Unplug all appliances before you leave the room at your hotel. Minimize the use of air conditioners and heaters. Instead of using paper cups you can carry your own mug. Walk to places of attraction instead of driving. Opt for public transport. As you travel, drink a locally brewed beer, or pamper your taste buds with local produce, and cuisine. Avoid throw away water bottles. When hiking, stay on marked trails and maintain a safe distance from animals. Select an eco-friendly sunscreen. Choose electronic tickets over paper. Choose to stay at an eco lodge (if possible) which are friendlier to the environment. Check them out online. Pack light. Make sure that you pack items that are reusable and avoid plastic bags. You can opt for reusable sandwich bags and Tupperware containers to pack toiletries.

Keeping Your Cool

Indoors... With the temperatures rising, are you finding your home a little too hot? Well, the easiest thing is to switch on the AC, but here are some tips to make your home cooler before you do: 1) Block direct sunlight. Draw all the blinds and curtains during the day to prevent the heat and light from entering the rooms. Invest in thick, blackout curtains. At night, open the windows to let the heat out. 2) Replace any lighting with fluorescent and LED bulbs. 3) Gas and electric stoves heat up the kitchen, and along with it, the rest of the house. Start using a heat-efficient counter-top oven more often. 4) If you have a table fan, place a bottle of chilled water right in front of it. The breeze will become instantly cooler. Chill Out: Apart from cooling down your home, here are tips for you to beat the heat: Sip on water and fresh juices. Soak a towel in cold water and apply it on your neck, wrists and face. Stick to loose-fitted, light clothes. Avoid synthetic dress material.

sleep forget

A study presented at the Forum of European Neuroscience conference in Geneva, Switzerland suggests that a good night’s sleep can improve memory. They enlisted 32 volunteers to each learn a new skill, such as following a moving dot on a computer screen using a joy stick. Participants were then divided into two groups: the first was allowed to sleep for eight hours and the second was deprived of sleep or only permitted to take a short nap. To assess the impact of these sleep patterns on the brain, researchers then used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to scan the brain activity of participants as they repeated the tasks that they had learned the previous days. According to the researchers, those who had slept properly the previous night performed better on the skills, a finding that was also reflected in their brain activity. Specifically, the researchers reported that in those that were not sleep deprived, there was more activity in certain regions of the brain associated with learning and memory. The study suggests that getting a good night’s sleep can help the brain “harden up weak memories which otherwise might fade in time." The study did not determine how much sleep was necessary for optimal memory retention, and also suggested that fluctuations in sleep cycle or structure, such as those created by sleep aids, may also impact memorization. Sleep also gives worn-out muscles the time necessary

to rest and repair and allows time for the release of hormones associated with fat loss. In short, sleep is associated with a better mind, a better mood and a better body, so, make an appointment to get your snooze on and sign up for a long stretch of uninterrupted sleep or, if that’s simply not possible in your house, carve out some time for lazy afternoon nap days.

what are scientists thinking about

FEATURES

Global Warming? The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) released an important report called, What We Know. It's an assessment of current climate science "that emphasizes the need to understand and recognize possible high-risk scenarios." Here are some highlights of the report: 1) There is (or should be) little issue about climate change in our modern society. It is happening here and now. 2) On this, a clear majority of climate scientists agree. 3) We are at risk of pushing our climate system toward abrupt, unpredictable, and potentially irreversible changes, with very damaging impacts. 4) Scientists may recognize the build up of Greenhouse Gasses (GhGs), but they also recognize the uncertainty about the long-run results. And so, AAAS is embarking on a new initiative to expand the public dialogue about the risks of climate change. The AAAS is making a new web site available to help in the knowledge-sharing mission: www.aaas.org. You can do your part. Don’t brush off or ignore the "naysayers" and climate change deniers. Share available scientiďŹ c knowledge with them. If you are an investor in a fossil fuel company, press board and management on what the corporate leadership is doing to address the climate change issues. Ask political candidates where they stand on global warming, or on climate change issues. We are ALL in this together.

Water ...cool it!

In many areas heating water is the second biggest user of energy in the home, accounting for 14% to 25% of energy consumed. Save money and the environment by reducing the amount of hot water used. Try washing laundry in cold water, running your dishwasher only when full, using low flow fixtures, and repairing leaking or dripping faucets.

catch the

Eco Spirit! FEATURES

by The “Green” Franciscan Sister, Janet Corcoran, OSF

One of the individuals who exemplifies the eco-friendly spirit is St. Francis of Assisi. He had a special fraternal relationship with the human and natural environment; everyone and everything was brother and sister to him. Marian Regional Medical Center was founded by Franciscan Sisters who are his followers, so Marian seeks to have “green rootedness” and to be environmentally friendly in their day-to-day life of service. Here are some of their environmentally friendly programs: 1) Commuter Program that offers employees a cash incentive if they carpool, van pool, walk, or take a bus to work as a means to improve air quality, etc; 2) Franciscan Store which is available once a week for employees and volunteers to acquire for reuse or recycling donated items no longer needed by the

42

hospital such as boxes, office supplies or equipment; 3) Terracycle Recycle Program where pens, pencils, markers and more can be reprocessed through this program; 4) Eyeglass Recycle Program where one can donate used, unwanted eyeglasses which are sent to the Lions Club, which gives the eyeglasses to people who need them; 5) Green Waste Program whereby landscape waste is saved in a bin and then sent to Engle and Gray for composting. This green waste becomes rich soil which can be used, for example, on agricultural land. Keep in mind that we cannot recycle wasted time, so let's continue to Catch the Eco Spirit by using the 86,400 seconds or 1,440 minutes of each day showing a respect for all of creation.

benefits of

Ginger Tea Treat yourself to a cup of homemade piping hot or iced ginger tea. Why go out and buy old tea bags when you can easily make your own homemade ginger tea at home using fresh ginger? Ginger has a warming and soothing effect on the stomach. Whether it's indigestion or the flu, ginger will help. Here's how to make the tastiest ginger tea you've ever had: Put a couple of slices of fresh ginger in one and one-half cups of water. Boil for 5 to 10 minutes. The secret to making a really flavorful ginger tea is to use plenty of ginger - more than you think you will need. Time it based on how strong you like your tea. Keep the lid on the pot to prevent vapor from escaping. Add a little honey and lemon.

Sour Power... Lemon water, literally water with freshly squeezed lemon, is the new super beverage that boasts an incredibly impressive list of health benefits. Here are just a few: 1) Lemon helps the liver to dump toxins by stimulating its natural enzymes. 2) Citric acid can help eliminate calcium deposits in the arteries as well as pancreatic and kidney stones. 3) Lemon provides a huge dose of the free radical fighting antioxidant vitamin C, which helps keep skin even-toned and wrinkle-free. 4) Vitamin C also helps boost the immune system, keeping the flu and colds at bay. 5) Lemons are a good source of electrolytes, such as potassium, calcium and magnesium, which help hydrate the body and regulate its functioning. 6) Lemons are rich in flavonoids. Flavonoids not only help boost the potency of

vitamin C, they improve blood flow, helping to maintain normal blood pressure and reduce inflammation. 7) They help balance your pH level. Though acidic to the taste, lemons are alkaline-forming on the body. 8) Lemons contain modified citrus pectin and limonoids, which have been shown in a recent study to prohibit the spread of cancer cells, slow cancer cell growth and induce cancer cell death.

use that

Pulp! Making fresh squeezed carrot or other veggie juice using your home juicer? Wonder what to do with the pulp? Instead of throwing the nutrient and fiber rich waste into the trash, sprinkle some on a plate and place it in the yard. Many wild birds love the dry fiber vegetable waste from juicers from produce like carrots, kale and celery. Just sprinkle it and you'll see a flock of birds soon feasting away. And when there’s more pulp than birds to feed, just sprinkle it in the garden and rake it into the soil; it will quickly break down into beneficial mulch your backyard garden will love.

8 Tips For a

Greener Pet 1) Adopting is Greener than Breeding: The first step to going green is adopting a cat, kitten, dog, or puppy from your local animal shelter or rescue group. You can even find purebreds at your local shelter. Between four and five million dogs and cats are put down each year at animal shelters across the country. Imagine the good you will do for the dog or cat you adopt from a shelter. 2) Spay or Neuter Your Pets: It’s a good way to reduce the pet overpopulation problem. 3) Buy a Good Quality Natural Pet Food: So many pet food companies are now manufacturing pet foods with wholesome ingredients. 4) Shop for Pet Supplies Locally: Less time spent driving is better for your health, your pets, and the environment. It supports the local economy too. 5) Buy Pet Products Made with Natural, Organic, or Recycled Materials: Even with natural products, limit the numbers of toys. Too many toys around the house often wind up ignored. Rotate the toys. Put some away, and take out one or two to play with your pet. 6) Use Biodegradable Poop Bags: Always clean up after your dogs. 7) Use Biodegradable Litter: Options include litter made out of corn kernels, pine, or recycled newspaper. 8) Recycle Cardboard Boxes: Cats love to hide and play inside of them.
