want a
"Greener" Where do you start? Anywhere you want. Lots of experts will tell you to throw out everything in your cleaning closet that isn't natural, clean your refrigerator of non-organic items and get rid of every piece of plastic you own. Some will even do their best to shame you for not being totally "green." This kind of thinking can overwhelm and discourage many people before they even start. Being "green" doesn't have to be an extreme. But, the simple everyday things like utilizing your recycling can, opting for biodegradable, non-toxic cleaners, choosing glass over plastic when appropriate and requesting environmentally friendly building materials when building or remodeling can make a big impact. With a small shift in thinking, you'd be amazed at the difference we can make. Whatever you do, don't let the idea of being environmentally responsible become daunting. It isn't. on the central coast!
16
Located in Morro Bay is Pacific Wildlife Care (PWC), an organization greatly responsible for the survival of much of the central coast’s native wildlife. PWC began over 26 years ago when a group of concerned citizens spoke out after the Apex Houston Oil Spill. PWC cares for and rehabilitates injured and orphaned native animals. Their staff and volunteers work to provide care, transportation, and home rehabilitation centers for the wildlife. When an animal comes into the center, it is given a complete physical exam and treatment plan, as well as proper food and housing. PWC does everything it can to return an animal to its natural environment. In addition to rehabilitating animals, PWC raises public awareness and respect for the wildlife they care for. They give presentations to educate children and adults about the wildlife on the central coast. The PWC believes it takes the entire community to preserve and care for our wildlife. Pacific Wildlife Care is the beneficiary of all attendee donations at the Thursday, March 20th Spring Mixer at Kohana Regenerative Center (see page 52 for details).

Weed Control for large areas!

by Angela Robinson-Platz
So many people believe that the only way to control weeds is with a product like Round Up. But, there are ultragreen ways of keeping down the weeds in your yard. Use these tried and true environmentally safe methods to control weeds over a large area: 1) Remove all weeds by hand or with a weed trimmer; 2) Create layers (at least 3-5 sheets thick) with overlapping edges of newspaper to cover the area; 3) Spray water to hold the

newspapers down as you work (cardboard works well too); 4) Apply a 3-4 inch layer of your favorite mulch (straw, bark, rock, etc.) It’s that simple! Using these methods will leave you weed free for years. As the material decomposes, add more mulch. As small weeds pop through, pull them by hand or pour boiling water on them. The decomposing mulch will condition your soil and attract more birds and beneficial insects to your yard. What could be better? Happy Gardening!

Try using your bike for trips of less than 3 miles... it's great exercise!

must be neatly maintained year round. The cost of watering is borne by the adjoining hotel properties, and in return, guests of the hotels are invited to enjoy the garden’s peaceful ambiance during daylight hours.
Few things illustrate that concept better than community gardens. A garden in and of itself provides a host of benefits: participants get to reap a bounty of fresh produce, work with their hands, and enjoy the outdoors. A community garden offers even more, including social interaction with other gardeners, opportunities for connection within the neighborhood, and, in addition, green space for the community. One local success story is the Baywood Community Garden. Located on Third and El Moro, this piece of land covers a scant threequarters of an acre, but provides an idyllic oasis for the entire neighborhood. Use of the property was donated by the owner, a local resident and business person who wanted to give a gift to the community. Gardeners must maintain their own plots according to a reasonable set of basic rules, such as everything must be organic, no invasive or illegal plants are allowed, and plots 20
Of course, other visitors are also welcome to take in the serene views of the Back Bay, as well as admire the green thumb skills of the gardeners. In fact, many grow more than they can use for themselves and are happy to share the wealth. So, at any given time, this little piece of land is feeding a few dozen local residents. The Baywood Community Garden has indeed become a gift of immeasurable wealth for so many.

water shortage!
Here are ten simple things you can do to cut down on your water consumption today: 1) Never throw water away. If you pour too much out or have some left in your glass, use it. Pour the surplus into your dog’s water dish, water a plant, or add it to your water kettle. 2) Don't leave the tap running. If you are washing your face and you need to get the tap warm, use that initial cooler water to brush your teeth or wash your face. 3) Choose and use your appliances wisely. Use Energy Star appliances whenever possible and always use them at full capacity. Choose economy settings and don't run the dishwasher halffull. 4) Install a low-flow toilet and don't flush it more than necessary. 5) Make sure every tap in your home has an aerator. They restrict water flow. 6) Stop that leaky toilet. Leaks can often be fixed by making minor adjustments. 7) Repair dripping faucets by replacing washers. According to American Water & Energy Savers, a faucet that drips at the rate of one drop per second will waste 2,700 gallons per year. 8) Take shorter showers. At the very least replace your shower head with a low-flow one. These are designed to maintain water pressure while using much less water than the old-fashioned sort. Doing this may reduce your shower water use by 20 to 60 percent. 9) Insulate your water pipes. You won't have to wait as long for hot water as an added bonus. 10) Set up a rain barrel this summer. You can collect rain water from your eaves to water your garden.

Compost is nature's gold! Don't throw yard and kitchen wastes into the trash. Landfills are overflowing already. Compost leaves, grass clippings, fruit peels and vegetable scraps, and return their essential nutrients to your garden, trees, shrubs and lawn. By turning your food and garden waste into compost you can make a difference in the environment by: reducing the amount of waste you dispose, reducing the use of artificial fertilizers, improving your local soil quality, and by creating a more natural, healthier place to live. little Words... big Meanings!
FEATURES
The simplest little words have the power to hurt or heal. Here are some examples of little words that have big meaning in the most positive way:
24
Thank you: Because every single one of us longs to feel appreciated. I forgive you: Unintentionally, we may hurt our friends, children, co-workers, and others. Words of forgiveness heal the heart. I love you: These words reflect the purest, most natural gift known to mankind: love. I was wrong: Few words have the power to ignite the flame of forgiveness like the unselfish, courageous admission of wrongdoing. You are beautiful: When we feel ugly inside or out, it is comforting to hear that someone else still thinks we're beautiful. It’s okay: When we are worried, hurt, anxious or afraid, these words of reassurance help to bring about peace of mind. I understand: We don't necessarily need others to agree, but we long for someone who says, “I get it. I understand. I see your point.” You're safe: When we feel vulnerable and afraid, these words have the power to restore a sense of security and protection. I admire you: Having someone look up to you, think highly of you, or aspire to follow in your footsteps is motivating beyond belief. I support you: It means the world to know that someone is on your side no matter what. You can do it: There’s something about knowing that someone else has faith in you that revitalizes your faith in yourself. I'm here for you: If you've ever needed a shoulder to cry on, you know the power of these words. Great job: Words of praise and recognition inspire us to do more, to work harder and to feel a sense of pride. I miss you: This is a way of saying, I love your company and I can't wait until we're together again. I'm sorry: "I'm sorry," "please forgive me," and "I apologize" are all statements that show recognition of the damage caused and a desire to ease the pain. Solstice Green Directory - Spring 2014

Most birds build a new nest each year, though some refurbish their old nests. Did you know that birds make on average about 500 trips to build a nest. This spring, build a house for our feathered friends. Native birds can be easily attracted to most areas providing they can find a place to lay their eggs. A few pieces of timber, a couple of nails, a saw and some bird feed can attract birds and enhance a garden's natural enjoyment.

1) Organic food doesn't contain pesticides. More than 400 chemical pesticides are routinely used in conventional farming and residues remain on non-organic food even after washing. Children are especially vulnerable to pesticide exposure. One class of pesticides, endocrine disrupters, may be responsible for early puberty and breast cancer. 2) Organic food isn't irradiated. Cats fed a diet of irradiated food got multiple sclerosis within 3-4 months. 3) Organic food isn't genetically modified. Under organic standards, genetically modified (GM) crops and ingredients are prohibited. 4) Organic crops aren't fertilized with toxic sewage sludge or coal waste, or irrigated with E. coli contaminated sewage water. 5) Organic foods, especially raw or non-processed, contain higher levels of beta carotene,

vitamins C, D and E, health-promoting polyphenol cancer-fighting antioxidants, flavonoids that help ward off heart disease, essential fatty acids, and essential minerals. 6) Organic food contains qualitatively higher levels of essential minerals (such as calcium, magnesium, iron and chromium), that are severely depleted in chemical foods grown on pesticide and nitrate fertilizer-abused soil. UK and US government statistics indicate that levels of trace minerals in (non-organic) fruit and vegetables fell by up to 76% between 1940 and 1991. 7) Research suggests that eating organic has the potential to lower the incidence of autism, learning disorders, diabetes, cancer, coronary heart disease, allergies, osteoporosis, migraines, dementia, and hyperactivity.

Know? Here are some facts about wasted food in the United States: 1) Every year in America, we throw away 96 billion pounds of food. 2) Over half of all food prepared in the US and Europe never gets eaten. 3) The Department of Agriculture estimated that recovering just 5 percent of the food that is wasted could feed 4 million people a day; recovering 25 percent would feed 20 million people. Today, we recover less than 2.5 percent. Now that's food for thought! Source: Facts about food waste from Dive: A Film by Jeremy Seifert

gardening tips for
Dry Weather
Weather patterns are becoming increasingly erratic. There is no way of assuring that "April showers will bring May flowers" anymore. The following techniques are a must in dry weather but also provide useful guidelines for environmentally conscious gardeners everywhere. 1) Group plants by their water needs. When possible, put high-need plants in naturally wetter areas of your property. 2) Test your soil. 3) Add organic matter when necessary, maybe from your own compost pile, to increase your soil's water-holding capacity. 4) Mulch and cover plant beds with composted leaves or grass to help retain moisture. 5) Plant native species that are more naturally adapted to current water conditions.

by The “Green” Franciscan Sister, Janet Corcoran, OSF A gentleman who was born in 1182 and died in 1226 demonstrated a reverence for all of creation. He is known as St. Francis of Assisi. In 1979, he was proclaimed the Patron Saint of Ecology in the Catholic Church because of his inclusiveness and reverence for all of creation. St. Francis considered everyone and everything as brother and sister to him, and he is often quoted by various philosophies and religions because of his respect for all of creation. St. Francis had "heart-ti-tude" for all. Each day was Mother Earth Day to him. In the United States, a day is set aside to specifically focus on the respect for all of creation. It is known as Earth Day. It is said that a man named John McConnell came up with the idea for Mother Earth Day. John submitted a proposal to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors that was approved for the inauguration of the first Mother Earth Day. Therefore, Mother Earth Day was held on March 21, 1970 in the city and county of San Francisco. Senator Gaylord Nelson, is also referred to as the originator of Mother Earth Day. In the spring of 1970 he announced that a nationwide Earth Day would take place on April 22, 1970. In some areas it is observed on other days. However, both men took positive actions to make us more aware of our responsibility to be environmentally friendly in our day-to-day lives. Let's keep in mind the words of Kermit the Frog, “It ain’t easy being green.” Each day is Mother Earth Day!

Cooking Oil... which type is best?
Most of the oils listed here as industrially processed are, unfortunately, commonly considered "healthy oils." Not only are most of them derived from GMOs, but the process used to extract these oils results in rancid and unstable polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Because these oils are so cheap, they are some of the most commonly used oils in packaged foods and in restaurants. You'll find them in most fried foods, chips, nuts, breads, margarine and butter substitutes. What to avoid on ingredients labels: Canola oil (rapeseed oil), vegetable oil, cottonseed oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil. Alternatives: The healthiest oils for cooking are coconut and olive oil.

Foods...
So, how can one health-conscious consumer find out if their food contains GMOs? Below are 5 tips on how to avoid GMO foods in the grocery store: 1. Assume all nonorganic corn, soy, cottonseed, and canola ingredients are GMO: In the U.S., these plants are likely all grown using genetically modified seeds. If you need something made with corn or soy, be sure to seek out certified organic products, which according to the certification process, cannot contain GMOs. 2. Stay away from artificial sweeteners: Aspartame is made using GM bacterial strains of E. coli. 3. Beware of Invisible GM Ingredients: Ingredients lists are often difficult to decipher, and some of these foreign-sounding ingredients are derived from genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Some of the more common products include: whey, xanthan gum, glutamate, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, lactic acid, cellulose, citric acid, maltodextrin, and mono and diglycerides.

4. Choose certified organic dairy products: Conventional dairy products are taken from cattle raised with rBGH, a growth hormone likely containing genetically modified components. . 5. Don't trust the produce stickers and PLU codes on fruits and vegetables: There are many myths regarding the small coded stickers on produce. The one you can trust is a 5-digit code starting with a 9— that identifies organic fruits and vegetables and by their classification as certified organic, they are non-GMO. Avoiding genetically modified ingredients in the U.S. takes someone seriously dedicated to keeping themselves and their family as healthy as possible; it also takes a bit of work, though will become easier.

what exactly is a
Hybrid Car? of extractable oil available is likely to decline over the next few years. This means ever rising fuel prices (supply and demand). So, the logical thing to do is to find good alternatives to gasoline as a fuel and to become more efficient in their usage. Hybrid cars offer very real fuel savings so they are increasingly popular with motorists. While a hybrid car definition is quite simple to give, the reality of modern hybrid cars is quite complex... and may become more so as more models and variants hit the market.

Here’s a hybrid car definition: A hybrid car is a car which can run on two or more fuel sources. It’s as simple as that! Well, almost. Hybrid cars are far from new. The first hybrid was built over a hundred years ago - the Mixte built by Porsche. The Mixte even won a car rally. It used a gasoline engine to power a generator which ran an electric motor. Dual-fuel vehicles were not uncommon in the 1930's and 40's. Many buses and other heavy transport vehicles had systems which allowed them to run on petrol or diesel. Most modern hybrids are HEVs - Hybrid Electric Vehicles. The technology to power the hybrids of today really began in the 1970's. Victor Wouk is usually seen as the “Godfather” of the hybrid car after he developed a hybrid drive-train for a Buick. Since the 1990's hybrid cars have become a viable alternative to standard petrol or diesel cars. Gasoline prices are creeping up and the consensus is they are likely to continue rising. The world’s oil deposits are limited and many experts believe that the amount

Getting your hands dirty in the garden can increase your serotonin levels. Contact with soil and a specific soil bacteria, Mycobacterium vaccae, triggers the release of serotonin in our brain according to research. Serotonin is a happy chemical, a natural anti-depressant and strengthens the immune system. Lack of serotonin in the brain causes depression. While mental health experts warn about depression as a global epidemic, other researchers are discovering ways we trigger our natural production of happy chemicals that keep depression at bay, with surprising results. All you need to do is get your fingers dirty and harvest your own food. A study in 2008 discovered that glyphosate, the active ingredient of Roundup, depletes serotonin and dopamine levels in mammals. Contrary to Monsanto claims, glyphosate and other Roundup ingredients do perpetuate in the environment, in soil, water, plants and in the cells and organs of animals. One study found glyphosate residues in cotton fabric made from Roundup-ready GM cotton may absorb into the skin and into our nervous and circulatory systems. Solstice Green Directory - Spring 2014
not enough
Oxygen Many of us have shallow breathing most of the time. When we do that we're not getting enough oxygen which is the element we need to burn fuel inside our bodies for energy. Deep breathing will serve another important purpose and that is moving fluids through the lymph system. Your lymph system eliminates toxins which in turn frees your body to work on more important things like your goals! What to do: 2-3 times a day take 5 minutes to do 10 slow long deep breaths. Breath in slowly, hold, and then release slowly too. You'll be amazed how good this makes you feel!

people?
People who are negative can rob some of your energy too... if you let them. Make a commitment to not engage with negative people. Have compassion for them. Maybe their negativity is a reflection of pain in their life. Focus on that when having to deal with them. Be kind and make it a point to spend time with positive people every day.

Apartment
living!
FEATURES
Apartment residents may be dedicated to being greener, but may feel as if they don't have many options due to their living situation. There are a number of ways people who live in apartments can be more environmentally-friendly: 1) Window treatments can play a big role in how energy efficient any space is. Find shades or curtains that are going to preserve the heat in the winter, and keep a space cool in the summer. 2) Don't underestimate the importance of recycling. Recycling can seem like an old-fashioned way to be green, but it’s one of the most effective things an individual can do for the environment. Most apartment complexes offer recycling bins, so take advantage. 3) For an ultra-easy fix, replace incandescent light bulbs, and instead use LED options. 4) Although a renter may not own their appliances, when these devices are well-taken care of, they're more efficient. Only use a dishwasher if it’s totally full, and avoid the heated dry cycle. Turn off devices when they're not in use. 5) Starting a window garden is a great idea for apartment residents. Plant a few vegetables or herbs that are used most frequently. 6) Use a water-filtration device to cut down on plastic bottle usage. 7) Apartment dwellers can also work with their landlord to make valuable changes, including, lights with motion detectors, programmable thermostats and timers for sprinklers.

You can create a simple shopping list to help lower your risk of heart disease by breaking down foods into different groups. Here are some tips: Fruits and vegetables: Choose a wide variety of different types and colors; opt for bananas, apples and sweet potatoes in particular, which are high in potassium and great for the heart. Whole grains: These include whole-wheat breads and pastas, brown rice, whole-grain cereal, and oatmeal. "Healthy" fats: Add in salmon and other fatty fish, plus olive oil, avocado, and nuts, for omega-3 fatty acids. Walnuts, flaxseed, and soybean oils. These additional sources of omega-3 fatty acids are particularly good choices for vegetarians. Eating a lowsodium diet by replacing salt with herbs and spices and choosing nonprocessed foods can lower your risk for hypertension. Salt increases blood pressure, a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Seventy-five percent of the sodium Americans consume comes from processed foods. Steer clear of high-sodium sauces, soups, and packaged or prepared foods. To cut down on fat, opt for baked or grilled meals instead of fried foods. descriptions of integrative health/wellness and green/healthy living practices...
Acupuncture is a form of health maintenance, which stimulates the body’s ability to correct and balance itself. Based on the ancient Chinese practice of using "punctures" to cure the body of disease and relieve pain. This process is used to channel the chi life force throughout the body by a network of meridians in a continuous flow. Disease is considered to be an imbalanced meridian system, and "needles" are inserted at various points along the meridians to stimulate or disperse the life-force flow to correct the imbalance. Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses liquid plant materials, known as essential oils (EOs), and other aromatic compounds from plants for the purpose of affecting a person’s mood or health. Essential oils differ in chemical composition from other herbal products because the distillation process only recovers the lighter phytomolecules. Aromatherapy is a generic term that refers to any of the various traditions that make use of essential oils sometimes in combination with other alternative medical practices and beliefs. Ayurveda is an ancient holistic science from India. Said to be more than 5,000 years old, "Ayur" means life and "Ved" means knowledge. Ayurveda is the study of longevity that offers healing, rejuvenation, and selfactualizing therapies utilizing diet, exercise, yoga, herbs, massage, aromas, meditation,

mantras and tantras. Ayurveda tradition teaches that health is the balance of elements fire, air, water and earth – and illness is an excess of an element. Biofeedback involves noninvasive, simple electronic monitoring to observe the body’s functions and provide information useful to the healing processes, especially with stress. Using biofeedback information, guided relaxation techniques allow awareness and methods to control particular body reactions. Treatments may address anxiety, pain, migraines, insomnia, muscle spasms, asthma and other stress-related disorders. Chiropractic Care consists of Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) who are spinal specialists and have completed a four-year course of graduate-level study; a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom and laboratory, and clinical training at an accredited chiropractic college, and passed national and state exams. Chiropractic care specializes in chiropractic adjusting and manipulation, diagnosis, radiology, physical medicine, nutrition and natural therapies with an emphasis on prevention, and drug-free care. Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a system of evaluation and treatment which views the client as an integrated totality and uses gentle, noninvasive techniques to the craniosacral system surrounding the brain and the spinal cord.
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) consists of fingertip tapping on meridian points. EFT alleviates negative emotions and experiences. Clinical psychologists David Feinstein and Dawson Church, award winning author, The Genie in Your Genes, confirmed through their landmark study tapping on specific meridian points has a positive effect on cortisol levels, the “stress hormone.” Research suggests EFT is effective because it helps to balance the activity of the parasympathetic and sympathetic regions of the brain, making it a powerful healing tool.
Homeopathy is a holistic therapy developed in Germany over 200 years ago by physician, Samuel Hahnemann. Homeopathy is based upon the belief that “like cures like,” and uses small doses of natural remedies created from herbal, mineral and animal substances. Meditation is the deep relaxation of the body to heal the body, quiet the mind, and provide the client with a sense of inner balance. Meditation can be a state of focused or mindful attention, which can include the use of sitting posture, imagery, mantras, control of breath, and observation – all to allow thoughts to emerge and pass without becoming engaged with them. Organically Grown food is processed and grown without using pesticides, such as herbicides and insecticides, preservatives,
Osteopathy is a form of drug-free noninvasive manual medicine that focuses on total body health by treating and strengthening the musculoskeletal framework, which includes the joints, muscles and spine. Its aim is to positively affect the body's nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems. Permaculture is a system of environmental land-use and sustainable living techniques, utilizing principles from ecology, technology, and the wisdom of indigenous peoples. Developed in Austria in the 1970’s, permaculture emphasizes ethics: caring for people and the earth, and giving away surplus.

colorings or radiation. Certified Organic Food is grown on land where no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides have been used for three years; where there has been an inspection by an independent third party; and the producer has provided documentation such as soil tests, a statement of intent, and an affidavit.
Reiki means universal life-force energy, and is a scientific way to activate and balance the life-force energy (chi, prana, qi) present in all living things. One method used is light handplacement therapy that is used to channel energy to organs and glands. Reflexology or zone therapy, is the practice of massaging, squeezing, or pushing on parts of the feet, or sometimes the hands and ears, with the goal of encouraging a beneficial effect on other parts of the body, or to improve general health. Sound Vibration Therapy is based on the fact that the universe is in a constant state of vibration; therefore, the body’s cells are constantly vibrating. Sound vibration therapy employs the direct application of the voice, music, and other sounds.
