Beginning With a Bang
A fresh start—it is the best thing about a new year.
While I am not always big on New Year’s resolutions, I have a lot of health goals in 2026. Aging comes for us all, and the busyness of the last few years hasn’t allowed me much time to fight back. In 2026 I hope to prioritize health in a way I haven’t been able to for about half a decade, as having a baby in your 40s isn’t for the faint, and I am so excited to tap into our city’s wellness options. Nutritious food, strength training and—Lord willing—more sleep and less stress are all on the agenda!
When we started discussing this month’s cover feature, “The Power of Plants,” it was delightful to see how ready senior writer Evie Klopp Holzer was to tackle the topic. It’s a subject she had already deeply researched, and a healthy lifestyle she was living. For this feature she interviewed three local nutrition experts and examined the power of plants from the ground up. She also compiled a list of “10 Easy Ways to Eat More Plants” (pg. 30) and created a colorful “Rainbow of Choices” that will contribute to a pretty and healthy plate (pg. 32). To capture some of the metro’s top yummy vegan options, Evie and photographer Shea Alan collaborated with the appropriately titled Plant in Midtown.
We are also thrilled to bring you the extremely helpful list of OKC’s Top Doctors (pg. 36). This annual list is compiled based on recommendations by the physicians' peers. Congratulations to all those honored!
Plus, in this issue we are thrilled to introduce you to the powerhouse woman changing lives with RestoreOKC (pg. 12) and a luxury Western fashion designer who recently threw one of the craziest brand premiere events I’ve ever attended (pg. 76).
Don’t miss the timeless and stylish home design spread (p. 22) or our coverage of two fresh food options: a splashy Norman oyster joint (pg. 68) and a sand-side beach volleyball bar (pg. 70)—more options to explore in the new year that lies before us.
Wishing you and yours a happy and healthy 2026!

From Hopeless to Healed
“My feet feel like they’re on fire.”
“Each step feels like I’m walking through wet paint.”
“I live in constant fear that I’ll fall.”
“I can’t sleep, my hands and feet tingle all night.”
What do all of these people have in common? They suffer from peripheral neuropathy. It’s estimated that more than 20 million people in the United States have peripheral neuropathy. Unfortunately this figure may be significantly higher as the disease is often misdiagnosed because of its wide array of symptoms.
Toni Twitty of Be Well Acupuncture in Edmond shares this belief. “I’ve been treating neuropathy, in all its various forms, for over a decade and so often my patients come to me because of the symptoms not because of a diagnosis. They saw one of my television specials, or read a testimonial of another patient and say to themselves, ‘hey, I feel the same thing’.”
Betty M. of Oklahoma City testified to this, “I remember my husband driving me to my consultation and I saw a woman running just outside our neighborhood. I was so envious. I kept thinking, ‘I would give anything just to walk again’. My primary care doctor told me my troubles with pain and balance were just symptoms of old age and gave me a prescription. I was so depressed.”
Fortunately, Betty would eventually see a review of Toni Twitty talking about similar symptoms and how she offers a real solution at Be Well Acupuncture. “I just knew I had to see her. She was my last hope.”
Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves. This damage is commonly caused by low blood flow in the hands and feet. Low blood flow results in lack of nutrients; the nerves then begin to degenerate and die which
causes pain ranging from discomfort to debilitating. Because neuropathy is a degenerative condition, once those nerves begin to deteriorate they will continue to do so until they completely expire, leaving those suffering with crippling balance issues. “In this case the absence of pain is not a good thing,” shares Dr. Toni. “This usually indicates that your nerves are hanging on by a fragile thread.”
So how exactly is Dr. Toni able to reverse the effects of this degenerative disease? “Acupuncture has been used to increase blood flow for thousands of years. It helps get the nutrients to the nerves. But the real magic happens when I integrate ATP Resonance BioTherapy™. This is tech that was originally developed by NASA to expedite recovering and healing.”
“I just can’t say enough about Be Well,” Betty shared joyfully. “My husband and I moved here 3 years ago to be near our grandchildren. I always stayed home because of the pain and discomfort. I couldn’t keep up. Yesterday I walked around the park with him! Next week we’re taking the grandkids with us! I am truly living life these days.”
“According to Betty’s test results, she has seen a 74% improvement in pain and functionality, which is on par with a majority of our patients,” shares Paige. “But more important than those test results is the joy she’s expressed being here and hearing about all the amazing things she’s able to do because she feels great!”
By seamlessly blending the ancient science of acupuncture with
modern medical solutions, Be Well Acupuncture has achieved a 90% success rate in reversing the effects of neuropathy. She starts each patient with an initial consultation during which a sensory exam is performed. “This not only aids in making a proper diagnosis but it helps to define just how much nerve damage has occurred,” tells the doctor. “This is important because if a patient has suffered more than 95% damage, there is little that I can do to help them. I’m familiar with the medical miracle but I know my limits as a practitioner and the limits of my medicine.”
If you or someone you love are suffering with chronic pain that presents as burning, tingling, or ‘pins and needles’ or you’ve recently been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, it’s important to know that there are options. There is hope.

RestoreOKC works to strengthen its neighborhood P. 12
Chasing a Love Stronger Than Fear
Caylee Dodson of RestoreOKC
BY KRISTEN GRACE PHOTOS BY CHARLIE NEUENSCHWANDER
"It is never a one-person story,” said Caylee Dodson, executive director of RestoreOKC. Since 2020, the organization has served as a place-based community development ministry in Northeast Oklahoma City—providing housing, jobs, education and a web of community support to its neighborhood. At every point in the story, Dodson anchors the problem-solving mentality and incredible results in the dedicated members of RestoreOKC.
In 2016, Dodson moved from Oklahoma, where she had lived all her life, to St. Louis for graduate school. She participated in a communitybased program called Restore St. Louis, and lived alongside the people Restore served. Some warned her it was a dangerous neighborhood, but Dodson discovered that her neighbors had the same goals and hopes for the future that she did. “We all want safe, affordable housing, good schools for our children. We want communities where we feel safe and we can give back to. As we got to know one another, I realized that we had everything in common.”
She came back to Oklahoma in 2020 to create a place-based community called RestoreOKC, but Dodson knew it had to be co-founded and co-directed. She credits Ernest Odunze for being another co-founder, among the first to have conversations with her about the project. “He
grew up in Northeast Oklahoma City,” she said, “and acknowledged that this city was structured in such a way that you could grow up here and not have any lived experience of a person who lived in the same city but a different ZIP Code just a few miles away.”
Everything that RestoreOKC does is based around community health, employment, residence and education. When the pandemic shut down jobs and food resources in 2020, RestoreOKC mobilized resources and within six months, created a grocery store, The Market at East Point. The store employs neighborhood people, gives employees paid training in culinary skills at Eastside Eatery and sells produce from the neighborhood farm.
The grocery store isn’t the only way it quickly mobilized resources to help meet needs of the neighborhood: After the news last fall that SNAP benefits would be suspended, RestoreOKC began rolling out plans to help feed and support the people in its neighborhood.
“We are living here every day with our neighbors who work so hard to break out of generational cycles of poverty,” Dodson said. “If you are not in proximity watching how complex and difficult this is to do, you have no idea what a complex issue this is; 65% of youth in our area live under the poverty line and face food insecurity, and that was with SNAP
benefits in place. When a deeply imperfect lifeline like SNAP goes away with no warning, it is an emergency.
“We gave gift cards away for short-term crisis relief, but we are also making plans for long-range relief. We are looking at ways to rebuild a circular economy so that our people have more resilience when these things happen. In 2026, we expect to see whether the state will be able to fund SNAP benefits on its own or not. We are preparing to act again to help this neighborhood if needed. We want to make sure we are ready.”
Dodson said that RestoreOKC is able to mobilize and support the neighborhood as quickly as it does because the community support is so rich. “When we show up and choose love over fear, and decide that we belong to one another, we can change the world. It is beautiful to realize how much we have in common with one another. Chase that knowledge. Sit long enough to listen. Proximity will always foster a love that is stronger than fear.”
Individuals, businesses and churches can make tax-deductible donations or pledge matching funds at restoreokc.org. RestoreOKC stresses that this effort aligns with its mission to restore health, stability and opportunity in neighborhoods disproportionately affected by poverty.

Consistent classics and refreshing takes
BY BENNETT HILL
I have found that New Year’s resolutions can actually work against their intention. We stress over what we want to change about ourselves, when in reality, what we need is mostly a fresh perspective.
Take a pair of chic floral earrings: A jewelry box staple, these accents are slipped on and off without thought. But what if those earrings were a miniature art piece, dressed in sparkling gold and lavender beyond sleek silver? Suddenly, statement pieces require a level of intention, knowing they might not pair with everything in your closet but might be the catalyst to a conversation between fellow fashionphiles and true tastemakers.
Timeless denim gets a makeover with a metallic finish, and your bomber jacket blends both pattern and material without sacrificing function for style. Sometimes it’s not about changing what we have but rediscovering ways they come together, creating a fresh perspective and a new point of view.

The Role of a Private Banker: Could You Use One?
For busy professionals, managing all the aspects of their business and personal finances can feel like another full-time job. Each is at a different stage of building wealth, and many are seeking ways to manage their time more effectively. This is where private bankers can help.
“The idea that private banking is only for the ultra-wealthy is a common misunderstanding,” said Sierra Eberle, vice president and private banking manager with Arvest Bank – Central Oklahoma. “Today, as more hardworking professionals build wealth, they’re discovering that a private banker is now accessible to them to support their growing financial picture.”
While the exact qualifying amount differs by each financial institution and region, those who have turned to private banking find a more personal level of service compared to traditional banking. If you’ve ever wondered if you could benefit from a private banker, here are some things Eberle says you should ask yourself.
Does your financial situation require you to work with multiple points of contact?
If you’re constantly having to connect with different individuals to assist with a variety of financial matters, both personal and professional, private bankers can simplify the process by serving as a single point of contact to help with any question or need. Eberle works with a team of experts to help make all her clients’ banking and wealth management accounts work together to meet their unique goals. This approach encompasses a diverse range of products and services tailored to both personal and business needs, including checking and savings accounts, loans and lines of credit,
investment management, estate planning, and other financial solutions.
Do you struggle to manage the complexity of your finances?
“Our clients are experts in their fields and often don’t have the time, knowledge or desire to manage all of their various financial aspects,” Eberle said. This can be especially true for small business owners and physicians whose passion and knowledge are evident, but who may need help managing business finances to achieve success. A trusted private banker can provide proactive guidance to manage the day-to-day business and help them expand operations when the time is right.
What
are you planning
for in the next stage of life?
Whether you’re early in your career, ready to launch a small business or planning for retirement, a private banker can help with your short- and long-term goals. Are you a physician ready to buy a home? Physician home loans can help new residents settle into the community with flexible underwriting guidelines. Starting a business? Private bankers can help efficiently run the business end. Need a plan for retirement? Your private banker can collaborate with a financial advisor to help create a retirement plan. “Private bankers don’t just manage money,” Eberle said. “We see ourselves as partners in life’s big decisions, providing tailored solutions that fit
their unique journey. Our goal is to handle the financial complexities so they can focus on what they do best.”
Are you unsure about your legacy options?
Successful professionals work hard to earn what they have, so it’s understandable that they would want to ensure their estate is fully safeguarded. “The role of a private banker is to understand all aspects of your financial situation and build a team of advisors to help design a plan that suits your needs as they change over time,” Eberle said. This could include business succession plans for retirement, disability or death, as well as insurance plans that provide peace of mind for your family or business.
Time is our most valuable asset. Managing an increasingly complex financial life shouldn’t cost us more of it. If you’re ready to trade financial stress for streamlined expertise, it’s time to see how a dedicated private banker can help simplify your busy life while helping you reach your financial goals.

Justin Venk's timeless designs complete this traditional Tudor home P. 22
Meeting of the Minds
Friends collaborate to elevate a 1930s Tudor-style home in Nichols Hills
BY EVIE KLOPP HOLZER PHOTOS BY MERRITT BOYCE
If home design is meant to reflect a homeowner’s personality, lifestyle and values, hiring a designer who is also a longtime friend can be a helpful starting point. Interior designer Justin Venk recently filled such a role for Justin and Peyton Porter as they moved their family into a 1930s English Tudor-style home in Nichols Hills.
“I grew up playing soccer with Justin Porter in Norman, and have been friends with him and now his wife, Peyton, for more than half of my life,” Venk said.
Knowing the family well, Venk designed a home to be most fitting in function, style and
historic integrity. He described the style as “relaxed yet refined, moody and dramatic while still being approachable.”
Working in conjunction with Chris Candelaria of Candelaria Design Build, Venk embraced the traditional details of the home while also adding modern elements and conveniences. The upstairs floorplan was reworked to expand the primary suite and incorporate walk-in closets and an upstairs laundry room. In addition, the kitchen and dining rooms were opened up to be more accommodating, while still keeping their dedicated spaces in the home’s original layout.
“We wanted to update the home but maintain the integrity of the design and craftsmanship,” Peyton Porter said. “Preserving the history of Oklahoma City is important to us, and we are grateful to have worked with a designer and builder who honored that commitment.”
The historic home’s beauty shines through Tudor details such as the leaded windows, mahogany trim and hardwood trusses. Original elements–the hand-carved wooden faces and intricate interior wood detailing throughout–were preserved. One of the biggest challenges was designing wall paneling and trim details in

The main living space presents an overall brightness, while the library and dining room introduce more dramatic themes, with deep reds and greens. The intriguing and inviting rooms layer the old with the new—vintage furniture with modern designs and fabrics.
“Peyton and I are both very open with our opinions on design, and we were able to marry her love of traditional furnishings with my modern point of view on design and finishes,” Venk said.
One example of this friendly combination is the dining room, Venk’s favorite room.
“The wood paneled walls and ceiling are enveloped in a satin olive green paint and feature a modern take on traditional wallpaper, while the windows are framed beautifully by Holland & Sherry wool drapes,” Venk said. “I loved being able to design a custom light fixture that features intricate turned brass details and reeded glass globes in a modern shape.”
Porter said the home is perfect for entertaining during family celebrations and holidays, as well as raising their two kids.
“We love our house and feel this is our forever home,” she said. “We want to treat the property as if we are just the current custodians, and we hope the next owners—many years from now—will treat it with the same ideals.”

The Power of Plants
Supercharge your health with a plant-forward diet
By Evie Klopp Holzer Photos by Shea Alan
After interviewing three local nutrition experts, one thing becomes clear: Consuming copious plants—vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts and seeds—can power up our health to the next level. Each meal provides an opportunity to nourish our bodies, so why not grab the good stuff? We highly recommend Plant in Midtown, whose plant-forward dishes are included in this feature.
We’re here to examine the power of plants from the ground up. Our experts break down the “what,” “how” and “why” of plant nutrition, presenting tips and tidbits in a user-friendly manner. All agree that little lifestyle tweaks contribute to big results over time. Eat more plants, fuel your metabolism and build a colorful plate for healthier living. There is so much to digest; let’s dig in.
10 Easy Ways to Eat More Plants
We know we should incorporate more plants into our daily diets—but how? We turned to Jaisa Thomas, a registered dietitian and the owner of Thomas Nutrition & Dietetics in OKC. Thomas described her approach to advising clients as “gentle and practical” as they collaborate on ways to improve heart health, metabolism, weight management and diabetes through positive nutritional habits and lifestyle changes. Here are her top 10 tips for consuming more plants.
1 2 3 4 5
Prioritize the plants.
When you are meal planning and thinking about what to put on your plate, determine the plant-forward dishes first, then build the remainder of your meal—the protein and carbohydrate elements—around them.
Eat a veggie rainbow.
Vegetables do more than fill nutrient gaps. Consume a variety of colorful vegetables for better gut communication, more blood sugar stability and less inflammation, which is often the root of fatigue, chronic disease, joint pain and weight changes.
Don’t forget about fruit.
Fruits often get a bad reputation for their sugar content, but they’re really sugar with built-in support. Each piece comes packaged with fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and hydration. These nutrients help your body process the sugar more effectively, while also delivering many health benefits. It’s nature’s way of balancing sweetness with nourishment, and energy with function.
Add in beans, nuts and seeds.
These plants are nutritional powerhouses. They pack fiber, protein and healthy fats in a small package and are really easy to incorporate into everyday meals such as soups and grain bowls. In addition, they’re affordable and shelf stable (making them a pantry staple), and they have some of the strongest evidence for heart protection.
Plan for success.
There are no rules for meal planning and prepping. Planning for two or three days at a time may be less overwhelming than figuring out a whole week, so do what feels best for you. Wash fruits, cut up veggies and mix up marinades ahead of time to make busy weekday meals extra easy.

10 9 8 7 6
Prep, then prop.
Set aside time to prep your fruits and vegetables, then prop healthy items where you can’t ignore them. Choose the front of the fridge, eyelevel bowls and clear containers. Make it obvious, reachable and obtainable.
Snack to stay steady.
It’s time to reframe the way we think about snacks. Snacks are a good supporting cast to keep energy and blood sugar stable between meals and to prevent that mid-afternoon crash. For satisfying results, try pairing fiber with flavor, such as apple slices with almond butter.
Savor the flavor.
What are your favorite seasonings and herbs? Make plant-forward meals irresistible by leaning into your favorite tastes. Toss vegetables in olive oil and seasonings and roast or saute them. Try adding a pinch of cayenne pepper for heat, or popping them in the air fryer for quick crispy texture. The flavor-filled possibilities are endless.
Encourage budding tastebuds.
Families can introduce new vegetables to the table by preparing them with favorite and familiar textures—such as crispy or mashed. Repeated exposure over time will gradually build comfort, so try to be patient and not too forceful with new foods. Sometimes camouflage can be key; think cauliflower in mashed potatoes or soft carrots in marinara.
Start where you are.
Enhancing your eating habits doesn’t require perfection. Nourishment isn’t an all-or-nothing endeavor. Rather, it’s a series of small choices that add up over time. Every extra serving of berries, beans or veggies is an investment in your long-term health and wellness.

A Rainbow of Choices
Colorful foods definitely contribute to a pretty plate. Vibrant vegetables and fruits are also nutritious and delicious—and when you consume a variety of colors, you’re getting a variety of vitamins and nutrients. (Rainbow for the win!) Registered dietitian Kristine Palmer breaks down this topic in more detail. We appreciate her insight, advice and colorful commentary.
Red Orange / Yellow
Examples: Tomatoes, strawberries, watermelon
Benefits: Rich in lycopene (supports skin health and provides antioxidants to counteract sun damage) and in anthocyanins (associated with heart health).
Power Boost: Lycopene is more concentrated when foods like tomatoes are cooked or reduced. Tomato paste is stellar, but even ketchup counts.
Benefits: Filled with diverse nutrients including sulforaphane (notably in broccoli, linked to cancer prevention) and antioxidants; rich in fiber (good for microbiome), magnesium and potassium (support heart health and lower blood pressure), vitamin K and calcium (support bone health) … can even help with sleep.
Power Boost: Green vegetables are often the least consumed, yet they pack a powerful nutritious punch. Want to maximize your health? Go green!
Benefits: Contain anthocyanins, which support brain health (help prevent Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s) and vascular health, and enhance insulin sensitivity/ blood sugar regulation.
Power Boost: Antioxidants are retained even when frozen. Frozen berries are easy to keep on hand and delicious in yogurt or smoothies.
Examples: Garlic, onions, cauliflower, mushrooms
Benefits: Support immune function and are anti-inflammatory. Garlic and onions are rich in allicin, polyphenols and potassium. These foods are also a good source of fiber.
Power Boost: Mushrooms will increase in vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. Try letting your mushrooms “sunbathe” in the kitchen window sill just before adding them to a dish.
Metabolism Superstars
When it comes to metabolism—that essential bodily function of converting food into energy— there really aren’t any “boosters,” according to Katie Eliot, a registered dietitian and an associate professor in the department of nutritional sciences at the University of Oklahoma. Rather, we want to work to maintain a healthy metabolism, keeping it steadily humming along in the most optimal way. A plant-forward diet is a great way to start.
“Plants play one of the most important roles in a balanced diet because of their antioxidants, phytochemicals and fiber,” Eliot said. “We’re learning so much about how fiber impacts our gut microbiome, and then how much that then impacts overall health. The more we’re learning about plants, the more they need to be the center of what we’re eating.”
Among all the plant options, Eliot said several are superstars for metabolic health:
Leafy greens like spinach and kale are a great source of magnesium and iron. Both affect how our cells produce energy. Leafy greens are also a great source of fiber.
Legumes such as lentils and chickpeas are also a really great source of fiber, plus B vitamins. The best part: Legumes provide an excellent source of plant-based protein, so they pack a powerful onetwo punch of protein and fiber. (Eliot recommended trying dry roasted chickpeas for a crunchy treat.)
Whole grains stabilize blood sugar. Opt for whole grain products when buying bread and pasta. These versions pave the way for more stable energy, compared to refined flour foods.
Berries, whether fresh or frozen, have wonderful antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help protect our cells from free radicals, supporting all processes in the body including metabolism.
While a healthy diet is always great, Eliot noted other behaviors contributing to better metabolic health.
“Eating regularly, not skipping meals and making sure you’re staying hydrated—because water is so essential for those metabolic reactions in our bodies,” she said.
“Getting enough sleep is also important, because while you're sleeping, your body is regulating its hormones and metabolism.”
With good foods and good habits working in your favor, your metabolism can keep humming happily along. And you’ll feel like a superstar yourself.

In addition, DataJoe often conducts media analysis through Internet research to factor in public perception. DataJoe then tallied the nominations per category for each doctor to isolate the top nominees in each category. After collecting nominations and factoring additional information from the media analysis, DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had a current, active license status with the state regulatory board. If we were not able to find evidence of a doctor's current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that doctor was excluded from the list. In addition, any doctor who has been disciplined, up to the time-frame of our review process for an infraction by the state regulatory board, was excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied result to the magazine staff for final review and adjustments.
THE ANNUAL TOP DOCTORS LIST PROVIDES THE NAMES OF 405-AREA DOCTORS RECOMMENDED BY THEIR PEERS. THE 2026 LIST CONTAINS OVER 400 DOCTORS ALPHABETICALLY AND SECTIONED BY SPECIALTY AREA.
Final note. We recognize that there are many good doctors who are not shown in this representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the region. Inclusion in the list is based on the opinions of responding doctors in the region and the results of our research campaign. We take time and energy to ensure fair voting, although we understand that the results of this survey nomination are not an objective metric. We certainly do not discount the fact that many, many good and effective doctors may not appear on the list.

Align Interventional Pain
EXPERT, COMPASSIONATE CARE FOR CHRONIC PAIN
Chronic pain is complex, and the physicians at Align Interventional Pain approach it with expertise, precision, and empathy. Founded by Dr. Emily Morgan Pollard, the practice focuses on understanding each patient’s unique experience—how pain develops, affects daily life, and what treatments have been tried. This careful attention ensures that every care plan is tailored to the individual.
Rather than relying on medication or surgery as a first step, Align’s physicians prioritize identifying the root cause of pain and choosing the least invasive path to relief. Dr. Pollard refined her expertise during her Interventional Pain Medicine fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, developing advanced procedural skills that allow for precise, effective treatment.
In 2024, Dr. Devin Reed joined Align, expanding its ability to serve patients across Oklahoma. A native of Northwest Arkansas, Dr. Reed earned his medical degree from Dartmouth College and
completed his Interventional Pain fellowship at the University of Mississippi. He brings the same patient-centered philosophy and focus on minimally invasive solutions to help patients regain function and improve quality of life.
Patients describe Align as calm, compassionate, and efficient. Both physicians take the time to explain procedures, answer questions, and ensure visits are as comfortable as possible.
What sets Align Interventional Pain apart is its balance of expertise and empathy. Through clear communication, collaborative planning, and a patient-first approach, Drs. Pollard and Reed provide practical, lasting solutions for individuals seeking relief from chronic pain— helping them return to the activities and moments that matter most.

Digestive Disease Specialists, Inc
YOUR PARTNER IN GUT HEALTH – THE PHYSICIANS OF DDSI
At Digestive Disease Specialists, Inc. in Oklahoma City, your digestive health receives thoughtful, individualized attention. This physician-owned practice focuses solely on diseases of the gastrointestinal system, offering advanced diagnostics like colonoscopy and endoscopy to give patients confidence in their care and clarity in their health journey. Their board-certified gastroenterologists provide these services to help patients across Oklahoma get clear answers and a reliable path forward.
The group, which includes Drs. Pramoda Koduru, David Stokesberry, Carl Raczkowski, Neil Crittenden, David Neumann II, Salman Nusrat, and Son Nguyen believe education is just as important as treatment. As members of the Digestive Health Physicians Association, they stay at the forefront of best practices, so patients receive care that is both evidence-based and compassionate.
Their message on colon cancer screening is direct. At-home tests only tell you if cancer may already be present. A screening colonoscopy not only detects cancer but also helps prevent it by finding and removing precancerous polyps before they become a problem. That’s why the physicians at Digestive Disease Specialists call colonoscopy the gold standard for proactive, preventive care. Patients often describe the practice as the best gastroenterologists in OKC—specialists who take time to listen, explain and guide each person through what can be an intimidating process. To help you feel confident in choosing us, we provide clear information about insurance coverage and payment options, making it easier to schedule your appointment and focus on your health.

Fresh and char-grilled oysters at Juliette Oyster Bar & Steakhouse P. 68
DINING
An Oyster By Any Other Name
Juliette gives Norman a coastal showstopper
BY MATT KIROUAC PHOTOS BY RACHEL MAUCIERI
On one plate, plump crab cakes waft a scent of Old Bay under a splash of tangy Dijon cream. On another, buttery Hokkaido scallops—pan-seared with pancetta—arrive on a bed of silken white cheddar grits. And on an icy platter, oysters shimmer like the sea, so fresh and pristine that you can practically taste the ocean. It sounds like the makings of a coastal vacation, but it’s all menu fodder at Juliette Oyster Bar & Steakhouse, a nautical newcomer on Norman’s historic Main Street. Growing up in New England, a seashell’s toss from the coast, I grew accustomed to fresh seafood and shellfish; something I assumed I’d have to leave behind upon moving to Oklahoma City. But, as evidenced by the recent spree of new sushi spots and Japanese izakayas, quality seafood is becoming as omnipresent as steak around here. And Juliette, which quietly
opened in October, is the latest—and quite possibly greatest—exemplar of Oklahoma City’s rising tide as a top-tier dining destination.
The independent restaurant hails from husband-wife team Theron and LeRhonda Jessop, with the former—an alum of such kitchens as The Skirvin and The Artesian in Sulphur—serving as chef. After launching The Wandering Pig food truck in 2021, and the seafood-focused 212 Boil House food truck in 2023, they came across a piece of prime Norman real estate this past summer, presenting an opportunity to do something more upscale, in a cozy space lined with exposed brick, snug booths and a huge wooden bar. With lofty aspirations, the duo designed a restaurant that feels authentic, effortful and personal—right down to the name, Juliette, after their daughter.
FALL SALAD WITH BUTTERNUT SQUASH CARPACCIO, ARUGULA, BROWN BUTTER VINAIGRETTE, SPICED PUMPKIN SEEDS, BOURBON MAPLE DRIZZLE, GOAT CHEESE
CRAB CAKE WITH LUMP BLUE CRAB, OLD BAY, DIJON CREAM.
A veritable bivalve bistro, it feels cozy and comforting, while the chef quietly serves some of the best oysters and seafood in the metro. The oysters, from fresh East Coast varieties like Blish Point and Goldilocks, to char-broiled Gulf Coast iterations, bubbling under a dome of butter and Parmesan, take top billing—stunning in their fresh salinity. Scallops, too, are some of the best I’ve had in a landlocked state, whether served with cheddar grits and chimichurri, or atop a thick, wood-grilled filet for a masterful take on surf and turf. Even the simpler, earthen items are staggering. Like a verdant, piled-high fall salad, brimming with butternut squash carpaccio, arugula, brown butter vinaigrette, spiced pumpkin seeds, goat cheese and bourbon maple drizzle. Potatoes, meanwhile, are transformed into fluffy, sesame-dusted croquettes with gochujang
honey and remoulade, or rosemary-seasoned garlic fries, cooked in beef tallow for extra richness. All fried items, in fact, get the tallow treatment, showcasing a concerted effort for quality and consistency.
Elsewhere on the menu, a show-stopping Basque cheesecake comes with lemon curd and a pecan lace cookie, while craft cocktails include the Butchers Old Fashioned, made with beef fat-washed bourbon and blood orange. Oysters and steak, the latter of which is wet-aged and cut in-house, may take top billing, but Juliette Oyster Bar & Steakhouse is in rarified air as a restaurant that goes above and beyond with every facet of its menu. I may not live close to a coast anymore, but thanks to this Norman newcomer, I’d hardly know it.

OKC’s New “Beach” Bar
Volleyball and tropical vibes at Boombox
BY MATT KIROUAC PHOTOS BY RACHEL MAUCIERI
It’s always sunny in Oklahoma City. Or, at least, it is at the city’s newest watering hole, where sandy volleyball courts share space with craft beer, fresh smoothies and tropical cocktails that sip like vacation. Welcome to Boombox Beach Club, a sprawling new volleyball facility in the Adventure District, where indoor and outdoor courts feel like a day at the beach, no matter the forecast.
The first of its kind in OKC, Boombox was born from a love for beach volleyball, showcased in a massive, warehouse-sized space with outdoor courts, and an indoor, climate-controlled “beach” lined with soft sand, lawn games and lounge chairs. And whether you’re playing volleyball or not, everyone is welcome at the on-site cafe and bar, overlooking the eight indoor courts.
The bar, while frills-free, serves up the kinds of drinks you’d expect to sip on a carefree seashore — like The Setter, a sweet and tangy blend of vodka, peach Schnapps, orange juice, cranberry and lime. Or The Ace, whose coconut rum, pineapple juice and grenadine tastes more like Hawaii than Oklahoma. Along with frozen drinks, they’re kinds of cocktails that
taste like vacation, and even though I live just a couple of minutes down the road, my palate feels like I’m on an island, cool sand in my toes. There’s also an impressively well-stocked array of craft beers and seltzers, including local ales like Lively Beerworks and Anthem Brewing, as well as canned cocktails and, aptly, beer from Hawaii’s Kona Brewing Co. There’s a curated food menu, with items like acai bowls, flatbreads and sandwiches designed to fuel a game of volleyball, while smoothies — like the Tropical Sunrise, with mango, strawberry and banana — lean into the beachy vibe.
What makes Boombox stand out is the immersive atmosphere of it all. Regardless if you’re playing volleyball, the layout of the state-ofthe-art 70,000-square-foot space is unlike anything in OKC, instantly transporting visitors to sunny shores. Outside, six volleyball courts are surrounded by walls, shielded from wind and excess sun, while the indoor area is filled with colorful Adirondack chairs, cornhole, ping pong and graffiti-clad boomboxes. Tropical cocktail in hand, it’s a day at the beach— without ever leaving OKC.

A Community of Thespians
3rd Act Theatre Company showcases collaboration
BY LAVINIA CRESWA
Over the past decade, Oklahoma City has had something of a cultural renaissance, with live theatre becoming more accessible than ever. Theatre companies of all sizes are located throughout our city, bringing interesting and diverse works to the stage— and that number includes 3rd Act Theatre Company, a small community theatre with a big heart. Now in its seventh season, it has been steadily entertaining audiences from a space nestled within Shoppes at Northpark. The 69-seat house hosts what Artistic Director and founding member Christine Jolly said is “the smallest stage you will ever see,” at a mere 16 by 20 feet.
Jolly, along with four fellow thespians, began 3rd Act Theatre Company in 2018 with over 70 years of combined experience on stage but, admittedly, little technical experience. “We’re kind of scrappy,” Jolly said. “We had to fly by the seat of our pants a lot. When we decided we were going to start a theatre company, we agreed that we would have to learn everything that there is to know about theatre.” They have since
created a true community theatre, learning to direct productions and bring together local stage managers and set builders as well as lighting and sound designers. Auditions are held for each play, bringing in a mix of seasoned actors and newcomers. “We have cast people who have never performed before or haven’t since high school or college,” Jolly said. “We are a safe place for people interested in performing to just dip their toe into the theatre world.”
Every season has a theme word representing it, with the current season being “Resist.” Jolly and her team make a point to mix well-known titles with those not as mainstream. Each play runs three weekends for a total of eight performances, and there are still four upcoming plays to look forward to this season.
Beginning Friday, Jan. 23 through Sunday, Feb. 8, Enrico IV takes the stage—a play by Luigi Pirandello, adapted by director Caprice Song. This surreal story centers around former movie star Reginald Henry who has suffered a terrible breakdown after a horse stunt accident and
now believes that he is actually the character he was playing: a German emperor named Enrico IV. This is a dark comedy that contains talk of mental illness, as a well-intentioned intervention unravels the truth of this Hollywood legend.
From Feb. 27 to March 15, 3rd Act Theatre Company will present Circle Mirror Transformation by Annie Baker. Marty teaches at a local community center and leads four students through a series of acting exercises. Winner of the Obie Award for Best New American Play, Circle Mirror Transformation discusses elements of the human experience, as the characters take the audience on a journey of romance, heartbreak and healing.
Next up April 10-26 is Decision Height by Meredith Dayna Levy. This entirely female production tells the story of Virginia Hascall, as she becomes a Women Airforce Service Pilot, joining a sisterhood of courageous, but often unrecognized, American heroes fighting in World War II.
Swell Party by Topher Payne will take place May 15-31 and is the final play of the season. It tells the story of a young tobacco heir as he arrives home with a new wife, to announce themselves to society as man and wife, only for him to wind up dead at the party. With a cast of wacky characters, audiences are sure to be charmed by this hilarious whodunit based on the real-life story of Zachary Smith Reynolds.

Western Style, Elevated
The luxurious appeal of Harley Rhodes Designs
BY LAVINIA CRESWA PHOTOS BY CHARLIE NEUENSCHWANDER
After being diagnosed with osteosarcoma in college and facing substantial medical bills, Harley Rhodes designed and constructed three handbags in an attempt to make ends meet. After one bag went viral on Facebook, Rhodes used the power of social media to turn a side project into a lifelong business.
Were you always interested in fashion and accessories?
No, my degree is actually in sports media strategic communications from Oklahoma State University, and I had options to enter that world when I graduated college. After one of my first bags went viral, I realized that there
is a huge market for luxury Western handbags and accessories. And it turned that I am really passionate about creating those pieces.
Part of your business is “going live” on Facebook?
Yes, we are an e-commerce brand and primarily sell on Facebook Live. We go live every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday night to show the purses or accessories we have available for sale that day. Each show has hundreds of viewers. There is a culture that we’ve created within inside our customer base. Women will say watching is us is like their evening TV show. You don’t have to purchase a bag to watch the show—it’s free entertainment.
But if someone does see a bag they resonate with, they comment “sold,” and within 24 hours of paying the invoice that exact bag is in the mail to them. We celebrate every single customer and are so grateful for every single sale we make.
You recently rebranded from Dancing Cactus Designs to Harley Rhodes Designs. Tell us about that.
Dancing Cactus was the brand I created out of college and those designs are now what we are calling “legacy styles.” They were more of a down-home product and were more noticeably handmade. It was time to grow our business to create more mature, elevated products. We rebranded to Harley Rhodes Designs in
HANDBAGS FROM THE FIRST COLLECTION FROM HARLEY RHODES DESIGNS
November and it was important to separate ourselves from the previous designs. This is the first time that the Western industry has seen a luxury defined product with a modern spin.
What makes the Harley Rhodes Designs bags different?
I wanted to make sure these bags are the highest quality Western product coming out of the United States. I design all of the patterns myself and choose all of the colors and accents, which are created on the finest quality Italian leather available. I have designed all of the hardware from scratch, which features our logo on every piece, which is then produced through the same hardware manufacturer that designers like Prada and Jimmy Choo use. Each bag is then built right here at our studio in Edmond. The moment you touch our bags, you can tell they are a luxury item.
What does the future hold for Harley Rhodes Designs?
Our first collection is out now, which features nine designs including crossbody bags, shoulder carry styles, totes, handbags and a clutch. It also has some accessories, and we will probably create men’s accessories soon. We recently introduced four fragrances for both men and women. Our products are always changing because we value what our customers want and listen to their feedback. Eventually, we would love to have our flagship store right here in Oklahoma City.

OKLAHOMA’S LINK TO SILENT
TOM MIX
BY LINDA MILLER PHOTO PROVIDED BY OKLAHOMA HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Some of the best-known Western film stars had connections to Oklahoma, including Will Rogers, Ben Johnson and Dale Robertson. But one of the first was Tom Mix, who was born in Pennsylvania and served in the Army for three years. He was discharged in 1901 and then re-enlisted. In 1902, while on furlough, he married Grace Allin. Marriage was more appealing than the Army and his agreement to return—he was listed AWOL but never court-martialed. In search of a new life, he and his wife moved to Guthrie in Oklahoma Territory.
Mix adapted quickly and had several jobs, including a bartender in the Blue Belle Saloon
in Guthrie, a drummer in the Territorial Cavalry Band and night marshal in Dewey. He also was a ranch hand at the 101 Ranch and a performer in the Miller Brothers 101 Wild West Show.
He would marry five times and have two children. He had better luck with his movie career, beginning with his first feature film: Ranch Life in the Great Southwest. From 1909 to 1917, he made 236 movies for Selig Polyscope Co. Many were filmed in Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona, and at locations that included the Grand Canyon and the Royal Gorge.
When Selig started having financial issues, Mix went to work for Fox Studios. Owner William Fox admired Mix, who did most of his
own stunts with his horse Tony. He made 85 films with Fox and the budget increased with each one. So did Mix’s popularity.
He originally earned $350 a week, but fame boosted his salary–eventually reaching $17,000 a week, making him Hollywood’s highest paid actor in 1928. His early films were about 15 minutes long, but moviegoers wanted more action and more Mix. Soon he was making multi-reel movies, usually wearing elaborate cowboy outfits and a 10-gallon Stetson hat.
He loved thrills and pushed boundaries if it enhanced a scene but protected his onscreen image. Only once did he lose a fight, and he never rode off into the sunset with the girl or played the guitar.
Mix lived a lavish life, with a custom-built mansion in Beverly Hills and a 1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom 1. He was an international star, but his career began to slide when talkies replaced silent movies.
In 1928, he left Fox and signed for half his usual salary with Joseph Kennedy’s FBO Pictures, and made five low-budget films. The last was completed in January 1929, the same month he was a pallbearer at his good friend Wyatt Earp’s funeral.
Mix, still wanting to work, turned his attention to rodeos and circuses. He enjoyed performing, the accolades and meeting people, but film lured him back. He signed with Universal Pictures for a year, a deal that made him the studio’s top Western star in talking pictures. He also lent his name to a radio series, “Tom Mix Ralston Straight Shooters,” with 15-minute shows broadcast worldwide three times a week.
Overall, Mix starred in 366 films from 1909 to 1935, producing 88, writing 71 and directing 117. His last film was The Miracle Rider, a 15-part serial released in 1935. It was one of only nine talkies that Mix made.
He died Oct. 12, 1940, when he lost control of his Cord Phaeton convertible and rolled into a dry wash area near Florence, Arizona. A heavy aluminum suitcase in the car hit the back of his head and broke his neck. He was 60 years old. The Tom Mix Museum in Dewey tells his story and showcases many of his personal possessions.
