Portrait of a Pioneer

Very few people have put Oklahoma on the map the way Ree Drummond has. Literally from scratch, she built a media and lifestyle brand that transformed a small town, and her legacy, products and recipes fill the kitchens and bellies of families worldwide.

Every August, we feature a person who has done and continues to do massive things for our community. We have known for years we wanted to feature The Pioneer Woman herself! The shoot at her ranch was one of the most magical days of my life; Ree and her team welcomed us into her home and could not have been more lovely and hospitable. Not an ounce of the Southern hospitality is less than authentic. During the shoot her basset hounds joined in and her grown children, fresh off the cattle fields, came and went.

Every single person at the shoot that day had a favorite recipe from one of her cookbooks and a story behind it. Personally, I make her veggie chili every Halloween and we have it before going trick-or-treating. It always feels like the official start to the full and festive holiday season. At the conclusion of the shoot, our team went and enjoyed the day at The Pioneer Woman Mercantile and Restaurant, feasting on—I kid you not—the best Southern food I have ever had in my life. It is 100% worth the trip to Pawhuska if you haven’t had a chance to go yet. Senior writer Evie Klopp Holzer and photographer Shevaun Williams captured Ree so wonderfully, and I can’t wait for you all to see the results (pg. 24)!

Also in this issue you will also find the much anticipated “Faces of the 405,” showcasing the impressive people behind some of the top industries in Oklahoma City. So many of the people featured are near to our heart and I admire them greatly (pg. 35).

We are excited to introduce you to a local-turned-international sculpture artist currently creating a piece for Edmond (pg. 84), an earthy modern home design spread (pg. 20) and a tantalizing food and drink section (pg. 75).

With this special issue, I am celebrating five years as Editor-in-Chief at 405 Magazine I’m so thankful to get to do this as a career. When it comes down to it, it’s easy—because I love this city so much. Oklahoma City is it for me. It’s what happens when a group of hardworking people decide that they are going to create something beautiful … much like Ree building an empire out of the prairie. Our supportive and kind community is one of one, and it’s such an honor to be a part of telling OKC’s story.

Center of Family Love (CFL) held its 13th annual Gift of Love Gala at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, raising more than $1 million in support of its mission to empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The evening was hosted by Malcolm Tubbs with President and CEO Shawn Dillon addressing the transition gap many individuals face after high school. More than 700 guests attended the evening, celebrating the talents of CFL residents while raising critical funds for programs that empower individuals and families.

CLUB BUBBLY

Allied Arts hosted a lively day party, Club Bubbly, at The Jones Assembly Patio. The event featured a DJ spinning dance tunes and accompanying saxophonist, plus brunch favorites from the Jones menu and flowing champagne. OKLAHOMA CONTEMPORARY'S FOUNDERS DAY

Oklahoma Contemporary recently welcomed nearly 350 guests for an honorary Founders Day 2026 celebration. The event featured DJ YuchiBoy and light bites from Kam’s Kookery, and raised over $150,000 to support the museum’s mission to foster creativity and accessibility in the arts. Honorees included Governor Bill Anoatubby, J. Clifford and Leslie Hudson, Randy Marks, G. Patrick Riley and the E. L. and Thelma Gaylord Foundation.

REMERGE LUNCHEON

The 11th annual Faces of ReMerge luncheon was held at the Embassy Suites Downtown Medical Center. The event raised $225,000 and had over 300 attendees. The luncheon was chaired by Charlotte Sutton and Trisha Koelsch, and emceed by News 9 anchor Robin Marsh; it featured stories from ReMerge CEO Erin Engelke, graduates and their families and special guests included Kourtney Hartenstein. The nonprofit offers treatment, recovery and support services aimed at helping women address the causes of criminal behavior, restore family relationships and break cycles of poverty and incarceration.

Control estimates that 20% of Americans skip their annual eye exams, with a quarter of those individuals not being able to remember the last time they had one at all.

Optometric Association recommends comprehensive, routine eye exams every other year for those at low risk and every year for those at high risk. After the age of 65, all adults should have their eyes checked annually for things like macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts.

information about more than just your eyes. The eye is an interesting structure, as it is the only place on the human body where blood vessels and nerves can be viewed without having surgery—and as doctors look into a dilated eye, they may be able to detect up to 270 systemic and chronic diseases.

The most common condition that can be detected in the eye is diabetes. Dr. David Jackson is an ophthalmologist at Oklahoma Eye Associates in the Village and said, “High blood sugar can damage tiny retinal blood vessels, causing leakage, swelling, bleeding or abnormal

increased pressure in the brain, inflammation or other urgent conditions.”

Any new symptom related to vision or your eye should be taken seriously and evaluated immediately. “Sudden vision loss, a curtain-like shadow, new double vision, severe eye pain, unequal pupils or loss of side vision should never be ignored,” Jackson said. “Redness, dryness, light sensitivity, eye pain, bulging eyes or recurring inflammation may indicate an autoimmune or inflammatory disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, inflammatory bowel disease or thyroid dysfunction. may assume these symptoms are allergies or eye strain when they are signs that the immune

It’s estimated that more than 20 million people in the United States have peripheral neuropathy, though the number may be much higher because the condition is often misdiagnosed due to its wide range of symptoms.

A 1950s ranch-style home is refashioned into a fitting forever home

hen Tyler Williams purchased a 1954 ranch-style home in Nichols Hills, he asked interior designer Kirby Foster Hurd of Kirby Home Designs to refresh the home’s lighting, furniture and paint. However, the project grew into much more as Williams realized the home’s full potential.

“I started recognizing that it’s the perfect size and location, that I would never need another house in Oklahoma City for the rest of my life,” said Williams, adding that being within walking distance of Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club was key.

As the light refresh morphed into a total revamp, Williams knew he wanted to “do it right.” For that, he and his wife Kelsey Williams enlisted Jim Abernathy with Abernathy

Construction to collaborate with Hurd. They addressed major changes, like rewiring the home and moving interior walls, as well as elevating the design. A carport was added to the exterior for better curb appeal, while the ranchstyle architecture was preserved. Today, the interiors present a “Hill Country modern vibe,” said Hurd.

“It has modern elements that freshen the space, but they don’t take away from the ranchstyle home,” Hurd explained. “Tyler didn’t want a giant, soaring house. He wanted lower ceilings and a warm, inviting home—but still large enough where people can gather. It really is the best of both worlds.”

The floorplan was reshaped with concepts of togetherness and flow leading the way.

Multiple seating vignettes throughout the rooms (something the Williamses appreciate about designs in Palm Desert, California) make the home ideal for entertaining and Thunder watch parties. Thoughtful gathering spaces, inside and out, allow guests to spread out while still feeling connected. The pool table lounge and backyard bar and patio enhance the home’s “circle of fun,” as Kelsey Williams calls it. She appreciates how the flow encourages visitors to naturally rotate room to room.

Tyler Williams’ favorite room is the cozy, intimate den which also frames poolside views. The charcoal ceiling, wood beams and rock fireplace add to its warmth. The walls feature photos of wild Indian paint horses, longhorn cattle and buffalo from his property, Grande

Horn Ranch—making the design feel more personal, too.

Perhaps the most dramatic transformation was the kitchen, which was enlarged and reimagined with white oak cabinetry and layered natural stone. Diana Royale marble appears in a leathered finish on the floor and in a honed finish as a reeded backsplash. In the center of the room, an elevated tray ceiling and gold fixtures spotlight the island’s bold Calacatta Viola marble. The stone’s deep purples anchor the room.

“Calacatta Viola can be overwhelming, but because everything else is soft and warm, it’s the perfect thing for this kitchen,” said Hurd. “When you apply a busy stone just right, it elevates the space instead of overpowering it.”

In the end, the Williamses completely trusted Hurd’s design choices, and her involvement in this home went beyond the usual interior design duties: She was also asked to select the dishes, flatware and linens. By the time she was finished, the home was move-in ready, and fully equipped for everyday living and enjoyment.

“People say, ‘You did such a good job,’ and I say, ‘No, she did the artwork, the pictures, everything,’” Tyler Williams said. “When you trust the process, you get the best result.”

For the Williamses, that best result was establishing a forever home—once and for all.

The Pioneer Woman’s world of food, family and down-home hospitality

Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond doesn’t like to think of herself a celebrity (although she is one) who has built an empire (although her multifaceted brand certainly qualifies). She also squirms when someone mentions her millions of fans.

“I have a hard time talking about my fans; I feel like it’s more of a large friend group,” Drummond said.

With a kind smile and knack for hospitality, Drummond seems to value relatability over celebrity status. She’s quick to sign a cookbook or snap a photo with a fan—that is, friend—and her approachable nature has contributed to the success of all things Pioneer Woman.

Her Food Network cooking show is filmed at Drummond Ranch, where the family’s cattle ranching chores often inspire episode themes. (The program has logged 40 seasons, and counting.) She’s authored nine Pioneer Woman cookbooks, with another one being released this October, as well as a memoir, a book of short stories and two children’s books. The Pioneer Woman Magazine shares her seasonal recipes and homemaking ideas. She just celebrated the 10th anniversary of her Walmart home collection; products are easily accessible nationwide. Drummond is also behind numerous Pawhuska visitor experiences, including The Mercantile restaurant, bakery and shop and The Boarding House boutique hotel.

That’s a lot of irons in the fire, but Drummond remains cool and collected. She has such an easy way about her that talking to her is like talking to a neighbor, rather than an international superstar.

“Especially living in an agricultural family, there’s a bit of grounding to the whole thing,” Drummond said. “You know, there’s still the same amount of manure in our yard as there was before I started my blog years ago.”

So, if not “empire,” what does Drummond call all of her successful Pioneer Woman endeavors?

“I think I’d call it my ‘business.’ It’s a little bit of my world—it’s not the world, but it’s my world—because my business reflects my family, my cooking, my home,” she said.

For this feature, we are grateful Drummond opened her world to us and generously welcomed us inside.

Pioneer Beginnings

Drummond’s impressive career and brand are both rooted in a blog she launched in 2006 titled “Confessions of a Pioneer Woman.” Before discussing the blog, Drummond paused to provide background on the Pioneer Woman name.

“I have been asked through the years where the name came from,” she said. “I had been married just a few years. Our two oldest were just toddlers. We were living in the lodge [on the ranch], which is where I eventually would film my Food Network show, and we lost all water pressure to our house. We had no running water for four months, and I did the whole haulwater, boil-water on the stove [routine]. I don’t quite know how I did it, but it was one of those hilarious country meltdowns … My friend Sally heard about it, and she said, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re a real pioneer woman.’”

“Pioneer Woman” was also what California friends lovingly called Drummond as she embarked on a new ranching adventure after marrying Ladd Drummond. It was intriguing to them because it was a departure from where and how she had lived previously. Drummond’s father was an orthopedic surgeon, and she grew up in Bartlesville on a golf course. She said she felt like Bartlesville—population 35,000—was “too small” for her, so she moved away for college, attending the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Years later, as a young adult with plans to relocate from Los Angeles to Chicago, she returned to Oklahoma for a “pit stop,” as she refers to it. That short stay in Oklahoma was when she met Ladd Drummond, and her big-city plans changed direction … to Pawhuska.

“Bartlesville was way too small for me, [yet] where I wound up was even smaller,” said Drummond, musing about the irony. “When I got married, I was very much in love, and I did have a sense that my world was getting smaller, but that was OK … In many ways, my world expanded by moving to the country … There was something that clicked when I made that choice in life, and Oklahoma is completely responsible for everything that I have done and the creativity that I found.”

When the kids were old enough to work the cattle ranch alongside their father, Drummond was left alone in the home with her thoughts and desire to create. She began blogging daily.

“The first year, it was really just embarrassing stories from my past, funny pictures of the kids covered in dirt, working cattle—and funny stories, poking fun at myself usually,” she said.

Drummond remembers thinking her mom would read her blog, if no one else. However, to her surprise, her posts slowly started building followers.

“I started noticing that people would come, and then they’d share it with their sister or their friend, who would then share it … It just grew very naturally. It wasn’t until almost a year later that I shared my first recipe,” she said.

Photos became an integral part of Drummond’s storytelling. She would organize

her images in a sequenced, step-by-step fashion. She loved taking photos, and readers got to see it all.

“If I was telling the story of a morning of working cattle, I would tell it with photos. Each photo would have a caption or, you know, a funny little moment. I did the same thing with recipes. I would take a picture of the steak, and then me seasoning the steak, and then me melting the butter … I took photos of what I was actually cooking, [and] the people in my life,” said Drummond.

Through reader comments, she received direct and ongoing feedback in real time, which helped further shape her content and style.

“I heard early on that what people appreciated about the recipes is that they could find all the ingredients at their local supermarket or grocery store. I really took that to heart,” Drummond said. “While there were times that I think I probably tried to dip my toe into a more elevated culinary water, I have always been very clear of who I am in a culinary sense. I don’t want to try to be something I’m not. So, I share the recipes that reflect our lives.”

“Pioneer Woman,” once a tongue-in-cheek nickname for Drummond, has evolved into something much more meaningful today.

“I think ‘pioneer’ means stepping into situations or areas of life that maybe you haven’t had the courage to before—or the opportunity to before—and that has certainly defined my career,” she said.

Reflecting on her ranch-sized ambition and the successes that followed, perhaps that pioneer spirit was her driving force all along.

In Print and On Screen

As Drummond’s blog gained more attention and followers, a publisher reached out about collaborating on a cookbook. In 2009, Drummond released her first cookbook, The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Recipes from an Accidental Country Girl.

“It was very much like my blog in print form: lots of photos of the kids and the ranch and recipes my mom and mother-in-law made,” said Drummond.

One opportunity often leads to another, and Drummond said this was definitely her experience with Pioneer Woman. As her cookbook was being released, Food Network executives called with a show idea.

“At the time I thought, ‘In no universe could I be on TV’ … I didn’t feel that I was in that caliber of cooks, but eventually we talked enough that they offered to come out, and I thought, ‘Well, the reasons not to try it are kind of disappearing.’ So, I tried it. I thought it would last a few episodes, but it just continued … It’s really been an amazing journey—hard at times, but very exciting,” she said.

Initially—and understandably—Drummond was terrified of the cameras. She ranked her fear of public speaking “right up there with sharks and earthquakes,” she said, but she kept trying, learning and improving.

“I still would like the first 15 or 20 episodes to be stricken from the record; I was very green,” she said. “What helped me eventually was, first of all, desensitization. Then, you just do something enough that you become comfortable … I started picturing the audience beyond the camera that was pointed at me, and I was able to really understand that I was speaking to them.”

Much like her blog and cookbook, the show paired Drummond’s stories about her family on the ranch with the recipes she was cooking that day to feed her hungry cowboys and cowgirls. It was a winning combination, especially as key production elements began falling into place.

“They came to film the pilot for the Food Network show sometime in late 2010, and the producer, director and cameraman stayed at the lodge. We filmed in the kitchen there, and then it just kind of clicked,” she said. “It was almost an affirmation … There were these moments of serendipity along the way. In addition to filming Drummond and her family around the ranch, cameras followed them to church. Drummond’s Christian faith contributes to her lifestyle, and the show captured that as well. For example, one episode followed Drummond on Good Friday, baking hot cross buns and then delivering baskets of them to neighbors.

“Early on, we’d show the crew coming along to church, like when we’d have a church potluck. We would have a few shows where we highlighted what I was making for the potluck the day before, and then they’d show the potluck itself. It’s nice to show our faith in natural ways like that,” Drummond said. “To me, it’s just a part of my life.”

Through her career, Drummond became a state ambassador of sorts. She has not only put Pawhuska on a national stage, but also she has demonstrated and discussed Oklahoma culture.

“The first couple of trips out here, it was a continual education for them in the ways that Pawhuska, Oklahoma, is not the Hamptons,” Drummond said with a laugh, “but they loved it here. They felt safe. They felt at home—and I don’t mean just with us, on our ranch; I mean in Oklahoma.”

“Keep Oklahoma Friendly” is a motto that Ladd Drummond likes to say. Ree Drummond said that’s because she and her husband appreciate how kind Oklahomans can be, how quickly they will open a door or smile at a stranger.

“I mean, it’s that little finger wave that you get from other cars,” Drummond said. “The people who visit here still don’t get it. They’re like, ‘Do you know that person?’ And I say, ‘No, that’s just what we do here.’ … I think Oklahoma is, by nature, approachable.”

As she mixes with big names in big cities at big events, Drummond always carries her affinity for Oklahoma with her.

“I talk about Oklahoma: It’s beautifully wild and kind of a best-kept secret,” she said. “I describe it as my home, and I love it, and everybody needs to experience it.”

One way to experience small-town Oklahoma is through Drummond’s Pioneer Woman destinations, all situated in and around the hundred-year-old Osage Mercantile building on Main Street in Pawhuska. The Drummonds purchased, renovated and reopened the building in 2016.

Multiple (mouthwatering) Pioneer Woman spots dot the downtown area. The Mercantile features fresh-baked pies, cupcakes and other sweets upstairs, while Drummond’s famous chicken-fried steak and other Southern favorites are served in the restaurant downstairs. P-Town Wood Fired Pizza is another option, located across the street.

Drummond Ranch

Lately Drummond has been dabbling in a different kind of storytelling media, along with her family. The Drummonds are self-producing the Drummond Ranch YouTube channel, offering a detailed look into Oklahoma cattle ranching and their family business.

“Through the years, of course, we showed the ranch on my Food Network show, but it was such a tiny sliver of each episode. The crew would go film with them all day, but the footage that would wind up in the shows was about two minutes out of a 30-minute episode—and there’s so much to share,” she said.

Drummond likes how the YouTube format allows some episodes to be 10 minutes long, while others could be 25 minutes. The rules aren’t as restrictive as network television, so there is much more flexibility in programming.

“I think it’s really fun after all these years to be able to tell our own story,” she said. “I’m going to start focusing the stories on my children—my grown children—who are navigating a family ranch. Who’s coming back, who’s not, and everything that kind of goes into that—not to mention my granddaughter, who is my current obsession.”

This month, Drummond sends her youngest son back to Oklahoma State University for his final year in college. She’s also eagerly anticipating the arrival of grandbaby number two in September. Perhaps these family milestones will be shown on the Pioneer Woman website, magazine or screen. (Stay tuned.)

The Flower Truck

Established during the COVID-19 pandemic, The Flower Truck began as a scrappy upstart florist on wheels and has since grown into one of Oklahoma City’s premier floral design studios.

In March 2025, founder Randal Marsh sold the business to industry newcomers Jamie and Kathryn Bramble. While the ownership changed, customers likely never noticed.

“It’ll probably come as a surprise that we’ve owned the business for over a year,” says Jamie. “Kathryn and I both have full-time careers and other ventures, so we intentionally stayed behind the scenes while learning the industry.”

Rather than rushing to make changes, the Brambles spent their first year listening and earning the trust of their team.

“As honored as we are to be featured, it’s laughable that Jamie and I are being called The Faces of Thoughtful Floral Design,” Kathryn says. “We’re simply the support system behind the real faces of thoughtful floral design—

our tremendously talented team: Angelica, Alma, Bobbie, Ed, Pattie, Randal, and Sandra. These lovely humans have become our friends, partners, and trusted confidants.”

Now, with more than a year of experience, the Brambles are making strategic moves they believe will propel The Flower Truck to new heights. In addition to overhauling its social media presence and preparing a website refresh, they recently signed a lease for a second location in the Britton District at 923 W. Britton Ave., next door to El Coyote and across the street from The Flower Truck’s current studio.

“This additional location,’The Theater,’ as we’re calling it, will allow us to expand production while creating a beautiful new venue for events and celebrations,” Kathryn says.

The expansion is only the beginning. The Brambles hint that another announcement later this summer or early fall could, in Jamie’s words, “mark a significant new chapter for Oklahoma City’s floral industry.”

A timeless treat arrives in The Paseo

Walking into La Buca, the new Tuscan-inspired restaurant in the Paseo Arts District, feels at once like traveling abroad and coming home. It’s that fine line, threaded with timeless nostalgia and warm hospitality, that makes it so special. In the former Scratch space, velvet drapes and shimmering chandeliers set the mood, while candles flicker alongside plumes of cocoa powder from table-side tiramisu, and guests pair Italian wine with rib-eye Parmigiana. There is no shortage of Italian restaurants in OKC, but La Buca marches to the beat of its own drum.

“It wasn’t about opening a good restaurant, or an Italian restaurant,” explained owner Milan Karadzovski, an Italian native who regularly works the floor and spins house tunes in the restaurant during moody late-night DJ sessions. “I wanted to create something that feels timeless, where people can remind themselves

of the trips they’ve taken and the food they’ve had.”

With a name that means “hole in the wall,” harkening to tucked-away restaurants in Florentine wine cellars and New York City basements, La Buca conjures a sense of faraway escapism, while rooted in the coziness of dining in someone’s home. “People walk in and say, ‘This reminds me of my favorite restaurant in Florence or Rome, or a little hole in the wall in New York,’” Karadzovski said. “That’s our biggest reward.”

Hospitality, he said, is the distinctive heart of La Buca. “I’m not in the selling food business; good food and good service are expected regardless,” he added. “What I’m selling is hospitality. If you come to my home, I’m not selling you food. I’m going to welcome you.” Paired with nostalgia, and an air of timelessness, La Buca is the rare newcomer that

feels like it’s been in OKC for decades. “I refuse to build a restaurant with brand-new furniture,” he said, describing La Buca as new-school with a good vibe. “I wanted my chairs to be squeaky, I wanted to have that nostalgia part — rustic, sexy and moody, but not old-school.”

On the menu, a new-school approach to timeless classics echoes that aesthetic.

Karadzovski described the food as Tuscaninspired, from spinach lasagna Florentine—cut into rolls, pinwheel-style—to fried ricottastuffed olives, crispy porchetta with herbaceous salmoriglio sauce, and ribolita soup with Tuscan beans and smoked Italian sausage. He raved about his “best in town” meatballs and chicken Parmigiana, while highlighting unique innovations like a rib-eye Parmigiana. An Oklahoma-meets-Tuscany original, it’s chickenfried steak “parm-style,” pan-fried and served with spicy vodka sauce and cheese. Going a

step further, Karadzovski adds pepperoni atop the melted cheese, so the whole rib-eye looks like a pizza. Along with other signature items, like a table-side tiramisu and a Limoncello Ginger Spritz that he said is the smash hit of the summer, it’s a La Buca original that distinguishes the restaurant from anything else OKC has tasted.

But no matter how spectacular the food and drinks are, or how sultry and moody the space may be, it all comes back to hospitality.

“The food is the reward for that experience,” said Karadzovski, citing a commitment to honest flavors, quality ingredients and dishes that leave a lasting impression. “When you combine that with hospitality and atmosphere, it becomes more than dinner; it becomes a memory. That’s what La Buca is about.”

Mile-high cocktails dazzle at NOVA Lounge

hen a supernova occurs, and a star explodes, it emits more energy in a matter of seconds than our sun will in its lifetime. As destructive as it sounds, a supernova is actually a transformation, sprinkling galaxies with oxygen and iron, and mixing debris with gas to form new stars. It’s that interstellar transformation that inspired the energy of NOVA Lounge, a new penthousestyle cocktail bar on the 49th floor of the Devon Tower, where the immersive menu is as striking as the view.

The space has long been used for pop-up events, including the recent Mile High Cocktail Lounge series that partnered with local bars for themed menus, but as beverage director Colby Poulin explained, it’s been itching for its own identity — one that can meld seamlessly from a

sunny late afternoon through golden hour and evening.

“We really delved into the transformation of a supernova,” he said. “Our city sits on the edge of this beautiful horizon that, at night, explodes with city lights. We drew all that into what our cocktail list is.”

Describing the concept as a fun-driven cocktail lounge, exploring various elements of mixology, the menu is split into four progressive “phases” of a supernova: “Pressure” features light and bubbly libations; followed by “Threshold” drinks with more body and botanicals; “Luminance” cocktails that skew bitter and boozy; and finally, slow-sippers and dessert drinks for the “Afterglow.”

Each cocktail is beautifully constructed, perfectly balanced and as Instagrammable as

the view. After guests are greeted with a spritzy welcome drink, they can start with “Pressure” cocktails like the Crimson Sky, a rosy medley of gin, amaro, black tea, berries, lemon, honey and rosé. “Threshold” options get bolder and brighter, like the Signal Fade, with mezcal, chilebased Ancho Reyes Verde, citrus oleo and lime. “Luminance,” Poulin noted, pairs perfectly with golden hour, like Manhattan variations and a table-side Old Fashioned, while “Afterglow” features the kinds of dessert-worthy drinks — like the Velvet Tiger, with horchata, whiskey, coffee liqueur, dark rum and allspice — you can sip as lights gleam across the city.

Each section features an N/A cocktail, and there’s also a curated selection of wine and beer, along with aptly elevated bites, like whipped boursin crostini on rosemary focaccia,

beef tartare on tapioca “chicharrones,” and seafood towers layered with oysters, shrimp cocktail, lobster salad and a “mosaic” of fresh tuna and compressed watermelon. The Basque cheesecake, served with vodka crème fraîche and caviar, is the kind of bite befitting a skyhigh lounge.

Like Vast next door, walk-ins are welcome, but reservations for NOVA Lounge are recommended. No matter when you go, be it for golden hour or the afterglow, it’s an immersive experience that — much like a supernova — transforms the way we sip in OKC.

The Oklahoma Opry builds community through country music

The Oklahoma Opry just turned 49 and is gearing up to have its best year yet! With construction already underway for its permanent home on the Bricktown Canal, the Opry is currently performing weekly next door at ACM@UCO, providing familyfriendly entertainment full of both recognizable and original music.

The Opry Heritage Foundation of Oklahoma is a non-profit founded in 1977 by Granville “Grant” Leftwich with the mission of transforming lives through music. Leftwich originally hosted shows in his backyard but quickly outgrew this space as word of the weekly performances spread. Since that time, the Opry has brought in thousands of audience members, hosting hundreds of musicians on stage. The Opry Heritage Foundation has also expanded to become an instrumental part of music throughout Oklahoma, with exceptional examples of community outreach.

One of these initiatives is the Granville Community Music School, which provides private music lessons to kids ages 9-18 from low-income families for just 50 cents a visit. Named after the Opry’s founder, the Granville Community Music School is open to students who qualify for the free/reduced lunch program, providing instruction in all instruments as well as voice. It has also partnered with Positive Tomorrows, providing group music classes for homeless children as well as students recovering from substance addiction through Mission Academy High School.

Another incredible program hosted by The Opry Heritage Foundation is Strings of Valor, which offers free guitar lessons to veterans. As many of Oklahoma’s veterans struggle with service-related injuries, PTSD and other mental health challenges, Strings of Valor provides a meaningful role in their recovery and provides connection, healing and

emotional support. Once a vet has completed 10 lessons, they will receive a brand-new guitar and related accessories so they can incorporate music into their daily lives.

But what the foundation is best known for is the weekly Oklahoma Opry Saturday Night Show, featuring both local stars and talented new performers. Many successful musicians have graced the stage of the Oklahoma Opry including Cody Canada, Kaitlyn Butts and Darcy Lynn. Each performance features a live house band complete with background vocalists, with a carefully curated group of singers. Audiences will hear music that covers all genres and decades of country-western, bluegrass and folk music, from slow, heartfelt ballads to upbeat pop songs that will make you want to dance in your seat. Many talented musicians even make their on-stage debut at the Oklahoma Opry, as it is known for being a supportive environment for singers of all ages.

Executive Director Cindy Scarberry said, “Even if someone thinks they don’t like country music, they should come out for a show. We have such a variety of singers, and we think there’s something for everybody; no matter what your age is, what music you think you like, you’re going to have a great time. You’re going to laugh. The quality of music is unbeatable. Our musicians are the best of the best.”

Paul Lewis pursues his creative spark through sculpture

Sculptor Paul Lewis finds himself waking up every day around 5 a.m., racing to get to the studio. After years of learning and creating in different business and art arenas, he has at last landed in an area so perfect for him that he wishes he could “survive without sleeping.” His work with sculpture contains a classical feel while revealing his obsession with anatomy, blending reality with abstract elements.

Kristen Grace: Have you always been an artist? When did you first become interested in art?

Paul Lewis: I wasn’t a kid taking private art lessons. But looking back, creativity was always there. I loved art classes; I was always trying to

find a different way of doing things rather than following instructions. That got me into trouble on occasion—but let’s call that art. My parents have boxes of my childhood art, and it’s pretty wild. It’s just so many examples of me trying to avoid coloring within the lines.

KG: What led you to sculpture?

PL: I have always found myself fascinated by monumental sculptures. I was in awe of their scale. When I immersed myself in art history and learned the stories behind the work, I realized that it combined all the things I loved: creativity, problem-solving, anatomy, history and storytelling. I originally thought a career in medicine was my path, but over time, I realized a sense of stability wasn’t the same as a sense

of fulfillment. I needed a stronger sense of purpose.

KG: What inspires your sculptures?

PL: About five years ago, I was sculpting some monsters and dinosaurs for my nieces and nephews, and although the subject matter was hilarious, I quickly knew sculpting was in my future. The medium allowed me to play and create for my own sake. At first, I was terrible at it. But I had mentors around me: Philippe Faraut, Robert Bodem and Valentina Zlatarova. I spent the next years traveling and learning in Italy and Spain. I committed fully to this art and to the process. I moved to Athens, Greece, for seven months. I was either in the studio or studying sculpture all the time.

KG: Many people pick a new hobby or art, and if they aren’t immediately good at it, they walk away. I love that you admit you were “terrible” at first, but the feeling of play, and the mentors in your life kept you at it.

PL: I have gone through rough patches in my life. I have read self-help books. I am someone who procrastinates by spending too much time planning rather than acting. But hammered into my mind is the adage, “consistency beats talent.” Learning is hard, but the true prize is growth along the way.

KG: What do you hope people will feel or understand when they see your work?

PL: I’m not interested in telling people what to think. I’m interested in creating spaces where people can reflect. The best art creates those spaces. My most recent piece in progress is a commissioned memorial work for Mitchell Short, titled “Transcendence.” He was a remarkable 20-year-old skateboarder who passed away in 2025. This will be a permanent installation at The Uncommon Ground in Edmond.

William P. “Bill” Atkinson may not have realized his goal to become an Oklahoma governor, but he achieved success in numerous endeavors, including the development of a planned city that would eventually become Midwest City.

Born in 1906 in Carthage, Texas, his life changed when his mother died and he, at 9 years old, went to live with relatives on their farm in Texas. A few years later he moved to town to live with an uncle and worked at a local newspaper while attending high school. Perhaps it was that work experience that influenced some of his later choices.

After graduating from Texas Christian University in 1928, he and his new wife moved to Oklahoma and started the Oklahoma City Star, a weekly newspaper. It was the beginning of a long and varied career that included the founding of the Tulsa Herald religious publication and helping build several chain papers throughout Tennessee, Texas and Kansas.

But Oklahoma City beckoned. He returned and taught journalism at Oklahoma City University and was head of that department from 1934 to 1938. He sold homes on weekends.

In the early 1940s, Atkinson learned the Army was looking for land near the middle of

the country for a new military depot and later that the proposed U.S. Army Air Corps base would be in central Oklahoma.

He knew specific details about the land needed, though the exact location had not been officially announced. After studying maps and visiting with landowners, he concluded that the depot would be south of SE 29. He reached that conclusion after landowners south of the street were not willing to sell, but owners on the north side were eager.

He bought more than 300 acres for a housing development, with the original neighborhood streets given aviation names and the second section named after trees and shrubs with a coordinating tree or shrub in the yard.

Homes there were modest, but later Atkinson developed the Ridgecrest neighborhood with larger houses and lots and a backyard large enough for something special. He sweetened those sales with a free Shetland pony, and for those Ridgecrest homeowners who didn’t want a pony in their backyard Atkinson built a pony farm next to his home at Midwest Boulevard and NE 10.

Midwest City, established in 1942 and known for its forward-thinking design, was named “America’s Model City” in 1951 by the

National Association of Home Builders. The city featured dedicated spaces for schools, businesses and parks with culs-de-sac and curving streets. Atkinson wanted Midwest City to be a place for families to live and raise children safely.

Atkinson was president of the National Association of Home Builders in 1951; he aspired to be the state’s leader, too, running unsuccessfully for governor in 1958 and 1962. But he wasn’t just a homebuilder. He founded the Oklahoma Journal newspaper in Midwest City and published it from 1963 to 1979.

He developed Quail Springs Office Park and was instrumental in creating what is now Rose State College. He also donated land for Midwest City Memorial Hospital.

In 1985 he received the University of Oklahoma’s Distinguished Service Citation, and in 1995, he was inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame.

His historic 8,000-square-foot mansion in Midwest City is now the Atkinson Heritage Center with photos, family furnishings and memorabilia. Tours are also available. Atkinson died in 1999.
