Another successful academic year has passed at Salt Lake Community College, and we are once again in awe of the many lives that the Dell Loy & Julie Hansen Emergency Fund and Herriman Scholarships have helped transform.
During the 2025-2026 academic year, your Herriman Scholarships helped 138 students with $313,013. In addition to helping strengthen the community of Herriman, these scholarships made a meaningful difference in helping students pursue their academic and career goals. Your continued support of the Emergency Fund provided critical assistance to 119 students totaling $105,842. Thank you for ensuring unforeseen financial obstacles did not derail these students from progressing towards graduation.
Your tremendous financial support offers stability and encouragement to our students. Your generosity also shows these students that others believe in their capacity to succeed. Thank you for helping more of our students follow their dreams and complete their academic journey.

SLCC Student, Class of 2026
I am from Honduras in Central America, where I grew up with my mom, my older sister, my cousin, and my grandma. I moved to Utah in January 2024 to attend college, choosing SLCC because it was the most affordable option and because I have family here.
Outside of school, I love watching sports and listening to music. Soccer is my favorite sport, and FC Barcelona is my favorite team. When I first visited SLCC, what stood out most was the diversity. Seeing so many people who looked like me made me feel welcome in a way I hadn’t expected.
At SLCC, I earned an Associate of Science in business and am graduating on May 8th, 2026. One of the highlights of my experience has been joining the Business Leaders Club, where I met one of my best friends and made meaningful connections. The advisors at SLCC and my club were also incredibly helpful, especially when it came to internships and planning for the future. My degree has helped me stay on track toward my goal of working in marketing and eventually transferring to Utah Valley University.
Receiving the Herriman Scholarship meant so much to me. This was the second time I received it, and I was so happy and relieved. There was a difficult time when my parents were not able to help with tuition, and this scholarship relieved a lot of stress and helped me continue my education. To my donor, I am deeply thankful. Your support was a light during a hard moment and gave me confidence that all my hard work would be worth it.

I was born and raised in El Salvador, where I always loved school. My high school experience there was beautiful, and I learned so much during those years. In 2006, I came to the United States hoping for a better future. My journey was not easy: I faced many immigration challenges, including having to return to El Salvador with my young daughter while my husband stayed in the U.S.
I studied ESL at Salt Lake Community College, and I am now working toward my goal of becoming a nurse assistant. I was inspired by a nurse I had as a child who was so kind and always did everything she could to help me and every patient she cared for. I want to be like her and give back to my community in the same way.
I chose SLCC because it offered the best schedule for ESL classes, and when the Herriman campus opened close to where I live, it became the perfect place for me. I love attending SLCC because of the kindness of the professors. Every semester, I have had teachers who truly care and make an effort to help me succeed.
Receiving the Herriman Scholarship has been a huge blessing for me and my family. During a very stressful time when one of my children had a medical emergency, this scholarship gave us relief and helped me continue my classes. It also inspired my daughter, who is now starting classes at SLCC after graduating from high school. Seeing how much this scholarship helped me has motivated her to work hard and stay committed to her education. I am so grateful to my scholarship donor because without their support, I don’t think I would have been able to continue school. I want them to know that I put my whole heart into my classes and my grades because I want to show that I am capable of achieving my goals.

I was born and raised in Ecuador, a place I remember as being really nice, and I spent much of my childhood there. Around 2020, I moved to Utah because one of my main goals had always been to study in another country. Adjusting to a new place wasn’t always easy, but it opened doors I never expected.
My high school experience was not something I took very seriously at the time. I was more interested in spending time with friends and being social. Still, I managed to keep my grades up. Outside of school, music and activities helped me stay balanced. I like playing guitar, playing video games, and snowboarding during the winter. Those interests helped me connect with others and feel more at home once I arrived in Utah.
When I first came to Utah, I thought I might go straight into working. But as I learned more about SLCC and visited the Redwood Campus, seeing daily student life made me reconsider. What I liked most about SLCC were the instructors. They are passionate about what they taught and always available, not just for school-related help but also on a personal level. I graduated from SLCC in Fall 2025 with a business degree. I have now enrolled at the University of Utah to continue my education.
Receiving the Herriman Scholarship meant more to me than I can fully express. It was completely unexpected at a time when I was very worried about how I would afford my semester. The scholarship was a huge financial relief and allowed me to focus on my studies instead of stressing about tuition. Because of my donor’s generosity, I was able to take more classes, feel supported, and move forward with confidence. I am deeply thankful for this support. It truly changed my experience at SLCC and helped make my educational goals possible.

SLCC Student, Class of 2026
I was born in Salt Lake County and grew up in Sandy, Utah, where I still live today. For the first three years of high school, I attended a charter school that focused heavily on preparing students for college. I took college-level courses, had no electives, and even took etiquette and ballroom classes. My senior year, I transferred to Alta High School, which ended up being one of the best years of my life because I could take elective classes I was interested in.
When it came time to choose a college, SLCC stood out for its affordability, flexibility, and diverse student population. I started in animation but eventually found my way to social work, a field I truly fell in love with. I appreciated the supportive teachers, the Bruin Pantry, transportation passes, and how manageable college felt compared to a university.
My passion for social work grew out of my own desire to better understand my mental health. Therapy alone didn’t feel like enough, so I read extensively about psychotherapy to better understand myself. That desire to learn turned into a desire to help others, leading me to start a local book club and spend two years volunteering in Utah communities. I have now earned an Associate’s degree in social work, along with certifications as a behavioral health tech and substance use disorder counselor. I graduated in Fall 2025.
Receiving the Herriman Scholarship changed everything for me. I was determined not to go into debt. Before the scholarship, I was feeling trapped and even considering paying tuition with a credit card that I would pay off at a later date. Thanks to my donors’ generosity, I was able to move through school faster, focus on my education, and build a stable future. I am deeply grateful. This support made my education, my career, and my current financial stability possible, and it means more to me than I can fully express.

I was born in San Jose, California, and grew up in a small city called Watsonville, where I spent most of my life. College was something I started later in my life, first trying community college back in California in 2005 and again in 2018, but fear, especially around math, held me back. When my husband and I moved to Utah in 2020, I fell in love with how beautiful the state was, and we decided to make it home where I eventually enrolled at SLCC. I chose SLCC because I wanted the fastest way to earn a certificate or degree. But what kept me there was the support. My first psychology professor made all the difference; without their encouragement and guidance, I might not have stayed. I found confidence, community, and friends, and school truly brought me out of my shell. I earned my substance use disorder certificate and completed my associate’s degree in Fall 2025. I will continue toward a bachelor’s and then a master’s degree.
Outside of school, my family keeps me busy and grounded. We are a football family, and game days are the highlight of my life. I’m a huge 49ers fan and also a CAL Berkeley fan because one of my sons attends school there.
Receiving the Herriman Scholarship was a blessing beyond words. After being laid off from my remote job in California and no longer qualifying for the Pell Grant, I would not have been able to continue school or take care of my family without it. As a first-generation student, this opportunity changed my life, and because of it, two of my sons are now following in my footsteps. I am incredibly grateful to my donor. This scholarship was not just financial support; it was the opportunity of a lifetime.

I was born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe, and went to Churchill High School, an all-boys school. I had a great high school experience, and a lot of my time was spent playing rugby, a sport I still enjoy playing.
I moved to Utah in 2022 to continue my education. As I explored different schools, Salt Lake Community College really stood out. It was affordable and offered the flexibility I needed. At SLCC, I found a strong sense of community that felt supportive and welcoming. Everyone from other students to staff and faculty pushed each other to succeed.
I thought I wanted to go into medicine, but after a conversation with my cousin, I started looking into computer science instead. What I really enjoy about computer science is problem-solving. I love finding solutions that others may not see and creating automated systems to make things run more smoothly.
At the beginning of each semester, my work hours were sometimes limited and covering rent was stressful. Receiving Bruin Emergency Funding helped ease that burden and allowed me to focus on my classes.
I graduated from SLCC in Spring 2026 and am now considering transferring to Westminster or the University of Utah. My experience as a student and intern at SLCC has pushed me outside my comfort zone and helped me become a better, more confident person.

I was born and raised in Venezuela. Growing up there wasn’t always easy, especially because of the political situation. When I was 16, I made the decision to come to the United States on my own. I moved to Utah because I have friends here, and I ended up living with them while I figured things out.
When I moved, it was in the middle of the school year and I didn’t speak English yet, which made high school really tough. I had to learn the language while trying to keep up in class. Then during my senior year, COVID hit, and it became even harder because I had fewer opportunities to practice English with others. Despite everything, I was able to graduate.
I decided to attend SLCC because it was affordable and the best option for me. As a first-generation student, I needed a place that felt accessible, and SLCC offered resources like a food pantry and a clothes pantry that really made a difference. What I like most about SLCC is the people. I’ve met many students and professors who come from backgrounds similar to mine. That made me feel like I belong.
I’m currently studying business, and I really enjoy my classes. I also work at a credit union, which gives me hands-on experience and helps me connect what I learn in class to real life. I’m planning to graduate by the end of Fall 2027.
Receiving the Bruin Emergency Fund scholarship was a huge relief. At the time, my wife and I were struggling with medical expenses, and I was dealing with a health issue that made it hard to work or study. That support helped us stay on our feet and allowed me to continue my education instead of stopping.
To the Bruin Emergency Fund donor, I just want to say thank you. That support came at a moment when we really needed it. It helped us avoid going deeper into debt and gave me the chance to keep moving forward with my education.

I grew up in Taylorsville, Utah, and this area has been home to me my entire life. I currently live in Sugarhouse. Creativity has always been a constant for me, whether that’s listening to music, drawing, painting, or baking. I also work on digital art commissions, which has helped me see art not just as a passion, but as something I can share with the world.
I decided to attend SLCC because it was the most financially accessible option for me, especially since I started college during COVID. One of the things I’ve loved most about SLCC is the sense of community. People come from all kinds of backgrounds, and there’s no expectation to fit into one mold. I have earned an AAS in Graphic Communications, and I’m graduating on May 8th, 2026. What excites me most about this field is the idea that my art can exist out in the world, being enjoyed, even if no one ever knows I’m the one who made it.
Receiving support from the Bruin Emergency Fund was a massive weight off my shoulders. I had been living paycheck to paycheck, and the funding came at a moment when I really needed help. It gave me a sense of financial security and allowed me to focus on my studies instead of constant stress. A digital art instructor at the South City campus also helped put everything into perspective and made the field feel less intimidating.
To the donor, I can’t express how thankful I am. The scholarship came at one of the lowest points in my life, and without it, I might not have graduated. I was born in Tulare County, California, but Utah has been my home for most of my life. My family moved here when I was ten, and I’ve now lived in Utah for about thirty years. This is where I’ve built my life and raised my son.
I decided to attend SLCC because of the diversity, the strong sense of community, and the opportunities it offers. What I appreciate most about SLCC is how connected everything feels; programs like TRIO, the Bruin Pantry, and advising are easy to access, and there is always someone willing to help. These connections have made a huge difference for me, especially as a single mother balancing school, parenting, and real-life challenges. TRIO and academic advising have been especially supportive throughout my journey.
I am currently earning a degree in social work and plan to graduate in Summer 2027 before transferring to the University of Utah to continue my studies. My dream is to one day own my own practice and work as a therapist, focusing on substance use disorder and treatment center work. This field matters deeply to me, and having a clear goal has kept me motivated even during difficult times.
Being awarded the Bruin Emergency Fund brought complete relief during one of the hardest periods of my life. I was scared about housing, transportation, and my ability to care for my son while staying in school. This support eased so much stress and even improved my relationship with my son. He no longer comes home to a worried, overwhelmed mom. To my donor, I am incredibly grateful. I was born in Salt Lake City and grew up living across the valley. My high school experience was fairly typical, though graduating in 2020 meant that COVID disrupted my final year. I graduated from Hunter High School.
Creativity has always been an important part of my life. I enjoy drawing and have recently been spending more time developing that skill. I also like to write, participate in theatre, and play the violin. These creative outlets are a big part of who I am and connect closely with the path I’ve chosen academically. I decided to attend SLCC because it offers something universities often miss which is hands-on skill building and portfolio development. SLCC has helped me create a strong foundation by teaching practical skills I can directly apply to my future career.
What I value most about SLCC is the humanity of the campus. I love being around people at all different stages of life, which has shown me that education isn’t a race and that it’s okay to change direction at any stage in life. I’m currently finishing a graphic communication certificate and am interested in studying interior design as well. I enjoy learning traditional art skills and applying them to digital tools like Adobe. I’m wrapping up my certificate in Spring 2026 and am exploring other programs, both domestic and international, with a lot of support from my professors.
Receiving assistance from the Bruin Emergency Fund brought an overwhelming sense of relief. Keeping up with car expenses while commuting to my job, internship, and school had been incredibly stressful. Because of this support, I didn’t have to choose between working and staying in school. I was born in Tehran, Iran, and although I did not live there very long, my early experiences shaped who I am today. My family moved several times before settling in Utah, and I’ve now lived here for most of my life. I attended public schools in Utah and graduated from Cottonwood High School. Like many students, my high school years had their challenges, but I never lost my dream of going to college. As a first- generation student, continuing my education has always meant a great deal to both my mom and me.
I chose to attend SLCC because it felt welcoming and supportive from the moment I arrived. Seeing people from so many different backgrounds made me feel like I belonged. Over time, I’ve become more confident raising my hand and asking questions. The support services at SLCC, including Bruin Scholars, ADS, Student Services, and Campus Police, have played a huge role in helping me feel safe and supported as I focus on my studies.
I am pursuing an associate’s degree in music and music recording technology, which aligns with a dream I’ve had since I was young, to create music that makes people happy. This is my first semester attending full time, and I finally feel like I’m finding my rhythm both academically and creatively. I feel confident that I am on the right path for me.

Right before I finished my first year at Salt Lake Community College, my car had just broken down and I was in need of a new vehicle. I was lucky enough to be able to borrow a car for my last two weeks, but after that I relocated to California to work for the summer to try and be able to pay for college and a new car. I have been a resident in Herriman for over 8 years now. I am currently enrolled in the Electrical Engineering program at SLCC. After I finish here, I am planning on transferring to the University of Utah to get a Master’s degree, then enter the work force. Thank you so much for this scholarship. This has relieved a huge burden for me. This award is a huge help for me as I have recently returned from service as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in South Africa for 2 years. I haven’t had a ton of time to save money for school, and it’s been a big worry for me.

Honestly, when I found out I got $1,000, I literally almost cried when seeing it. This means so much to me. I didn’t think I would be lucky enough to receive this help since I know there’s other students who have it a lot harder than I do and I’m forever grateful. Right now, I’m working as a server at a pho restaurant while being a Medical Assistant student, and it’s been really hard. I’m doing everything I can to support myself, but I’ve been struggling so much financially. My family can’t help me out, so I’ve been trying to figure this out on my own. On top of worrying if I can keep the lights on at home. But this award? Gosh, It’s a game changer for me. It takes so much pressure off and lets me actually focus on my studies and my dream of becoming a Dermatology PA.
