New Operating Rooms Open In Lahore, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) successfully completed the construction of four new surgical operation theatres, taking the number of operating rooms to eight. The families of the l a t e D r. H a m i d Sikandar Majeed, Dr. Raza Dilawari a n d M r. S h e i k h Mohammad, the main sponsors of the expansion, inaugurated the new units in a small but dignified ceremony. The first phase of the second Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, scheduled to open in Peshawar at the end of December 2015, includes outpatient and inpatient services. Patients accepted for treatment at the Peshawar Hospital will still, in the first phase, need to visit the Hospital in Lahore for surgical procedures and for radiotherapy. This will add to the burden on the existing operation
theatres in Lahore, which are already functioning six days a week, from 8 am till midnight. The current expansion was therefore now imperative and represents the first increase in operating room capacity since the hospital opened twenty
years ago. This will go a long way towards meeting the ever-increasing workload from our patients in Lahore, as well as the expected surge in patients at Lahore once the hospital in Peshawar commences
operations. The first of the new operating units has been fully equipped with stateof-the-art equipment required to perform complex cancer surgery, as a modular laparoscopic operation theatre. This will allow our surgeons to increase further the nature and s c o p e o f laparoscopic procedures they p e r f o r m . Laparoscopic procedures lead to shorter operation times, less patient discomfort and enhanced patient r e c o v e r y, w h i c h translates into shorter hospital stay. W h i l e t h e construction of all four operating t h e a t r e s i s complete, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre is currently seeking sponsors to help to equip the remaining three theatres with stateof-the-art equipment.
SKMCH&RC Receives MAP Corporate Excellence Award Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre was awarded the 30th Corporate Excellence Award from the Management Association of Pakistan (MAP) in the not-for-profit category, recently, at the Governor's
House, in Karachi. The MAP Corporate Excellence Award is presented to those organisations that exhibit the highest standards in corporate management in Pakistan. This is not the first time that Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital
and Research Centre has been r e c o g n i z e d b y M A P, h a v i n g previously received this award in 2010 and 2012. We are honoured and humbled to have our efforts, and those of all our supporters, recognized in this way.

In addition, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre is pleased to announce a series of events in the United Kingdom and Ireland, aimed at recruiting consultant staff prior to the opening of the second Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, in Peshawar, in December 2015. There will also be an opportunity to discuss further expansion plans in other specialities for the Peshawar hospital. These meetings will be held in mid-June (final programme to be announced shortly), in London, Manchester, Glasgow and Dublin. Colours That Help Kids Heal Smiles were seen all over the Paediatric Oncology inpatient unit at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & R e s e a r c h C e n t r e (SKMCH&RC) in Lahore when students from Lahore College of Arts and Sciences (LACAS) participated in a painting project, sponsored by Master Paints. In this joint collaboration, the walls and corridors of the entire Paediatric Oncology inpatient floor have been painted in a child-friendly theme, in pastel shades, reflecting a journey into the sea in some areas and a jungle theme in others. This is designed to provide a soothing and healing effect for children admitted into the Hospital for cancer treatment. Particular care has been taken to promote elements that enhance a child's imagination and promote healing, comfort and familycentered care. The Playroom in the Paediatric Oncology inpatient unit also offers a similar environment, providing a f a m i l i a r, w e l c o m i n g , n o n threatening, friendly and calming
ambience for children. The Playroom is stocked with colourful books, building blocks and interactive learning games that cater to children of all ages. It is also equipped with a small mobile library, which includes blocks, stickers, books and toys, that travels from room to room to help immobile children to select a book to read, or to select and play with their favourite toys.
SKMCH&RC strives to make sure that children do not forego their childhood during the cancer treatment process. Under the supervision of highly-qualified Paediatric Oncology consultants, all the doctors, nurses and support staff of the Paediatric Oncology Department continue to offer the best possible environment and care for children with cancer.
