Single Woman Gets Fixed Up
A friend of mine introduced us. Well, that’s not entirely true, Sherry only mentioned him in an email and left it up to me. He was a good guy, she said, and why didn’t I give him a call? So I wrote down his contact info on a yellow Post-it note, filing it away for sometime, someday, perhaps. At this moment, I was too gun-shy to initiate anything with anyone. In fact, the last time I’d tried to connect via a friend’s referral, it turned out horribly; I ended up wishing I hadn’t. As a (mostly) single woman, I’ve learned it’s often prudent to just sit back and wait, treasuring an interlude before rushing heedlessly and hopefully into something new. But a day arrived several months ago when, exhausted by going it alone, I thought, “Why not?” Truthfully, there were a lot of reasons why not, a few of them named Ted, Dave, Marcus and Joe, each of whom had let me down in various ways over the past few years. Yet on this crisp winter morning I convinced myself that bravery is a becoming attribute. Not so hard, really: hold breath, dial, listen to his voicemail three times, leave message, hang up, freak out. Days later, when I’d almost put the call out of my mind, he left me a return message. After a few more nerve-racking exchanges, we agreed to meet in person. He offered to stop by Saturday morning, if that would work with my schedule. He was earning major bonus points already, sight unseen, just for assuming that I, too, had a busy life, something that never occurred to Ted, Dave, et al., who had shown up pretty much as they pleased. Our 9am get-together meant I’d have to be up early, but I was pleased with the idea, as if I was the person with whom he would most like to begin his day. On Saturday I took great pains to look attractively casual—jeans, sneakers, soft red sweatshirt, tiny gold earrings. Should I stay inside with my coffee? No, better to look energetic and productive. I hoisted a rake and went to work on a few remaining leaves in my yard, listening intently for a car (truck? motorcycle?) coming down the gravel road. I was shocked when he drove up exactly when he said he would, a feat so beyond the capabilities of Marcus, Ted and the others that I doubt it had once entered anyone’s head. He had an immaculate white pickup truck, muscular chest, and easy smile. I liked the way he took his time getting out, strolling purposefully up the walkway to greet me. He was neither dashing nor breathtakingly handsome, just towheaded and tall with piercing blue eyes. Nice-looking. After so many lapses in judgment, I had wondered if I’d be able to spot the Real Thing if I ever found it. Could this be he? He declined my offer of coffee, so we stood in my yard and talked. I felt myself relaxing in his quiet presence. He was curious about my current situation. When he asked questions, he listened intently to the answers and didn’t try to sell himself—I liked that too. By the time he strolled onto my porch to have a look around, I was more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Though it took a few more get-togethers for me to trust him completely, I had a suspicion that the noble, low-key Steven, of the pristine white truck and aquamarine eyes, just might turn out to be the man of my dreams. And he did. After 11 years of enduring Dave the flake, Marcus the secret alcoholic, Joe the invisible man, and Ted the pirate, I have finally met a competent, capable, honest contractor who doesn’t overcharge, comes when he says he will, and does a masterful job of resurrecting whatever has collapsed or broken, including my faith in mankind. Steven has fixed my front steps, my fence, my roof, my porch, and my spirits. He calls me by my first name. He has never hoisted up his tool belt and said, “Lady, I’m afraid you’re gonna need a whole new....roof/deck/yard/ life...and it ain’t gonna be cheap.” My Steven, Handiest of Handymen, works fast as lightning and always takes time to find out how my life is going. He doesn’t complain about his other jobs, his time, the weather, the economy, or women like me who’ve managed to neglect home maintenance so thoroughly. Somehow he makes me feel as if I’m the most charming and intelligent person he has ever met. Sherry, queen of fix-ups, asked about my love life last week. “Are you seeing anyone?” she said. “Yes and no,” I told her. How can I explain that romance pales next to the thrill of encountering a reliable man like Steven, hero of hearth, home and hot water heater reinforcement? Dates come and go, dinners are forgotten, Champagne goes flat and bouquets wilt. But a tall man with eyes the color of the ocean standing at my door with a power saw, an electric drill, and some 2 by 8s measured to fit—well, he’s the one-in-a-million guy I really want to see and talk to on a brisk winter’s morning. It would be easy to peg January as the most depressing month. I miss sunshine. I miss the farmers market. I miss my heirloom tomato man at the farmers’ market. I miss iced coffee. I miss the smell of jasmine. I miss swimming in the ocean. I miss fruit making up the majority of my diet. I really miss wearing jorts. But when I think about it, I realize that January is one of the best times of the year. There’s a renewed, optimistic energy that fills the city. Things like bright whites, giant cozy scarves, and Whiskey Apple Cider from the Belmont feel especially cozy and serve as a reminder that ultimately it’s the little things that make life special.

Josef Kirk Myers envisions the future with Visualive. For Josef, it was a recurring case of procrastination that jumpstarted the idea of Visualive. As a Sony Music marketing rep, he was responsible for papering the Holy City with flyers and posters as well as online promotions for upcoming concerts and music releases. “I loved the online part, because it allowed me to literally wait until the last minute. If I waited until the last minute to distribute posters, I wouldn’t be able to get it all done. I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice if I could just do it all online?’” Today Visualive, his company, has a network of flat-screen TVs around town (see their locations at visualive.tv) with rotating digital DIY shout-outs for area events and specials, acting as the twenty-first century version of the coffeehouse corkboard. “It’s been the biggest challenge I’ve ever faced, I can’t imagine that I’ll ever be challenged later in life as much as I am now.” What’s the best thing about wearing a skirt? “It’s comfortable and nonrestrictive.” What’s the best thing about reading skirt!? “Reading skirt! helps me maintain interesting conversations with sophisticated women.” Photo by Alice Keeney

Meredith English Perrone & Meredith English | Mistaken Identities In 1989, Meredith (on the right) was signing up for a summer camp at USC when she got the first inkling of a duplicate doppelganger. “One of the counselors that was registering the students thought that I was another Meredith English that she knew. She told me how funny it was that we were both blonde and blue-eyed!” Years later, the other Meredith (left) was having spam issues at the College of Charleston, where she is a marketing director, when an email popped up with the subject line Hello from Meredith English. “I thought for sure it was spam too, but it was the other Meredith who works at Trident Technical Institute.” The two compared stories and found that beyond the initial camp mishap, their lives had overlapped with missed e-messages from old friends, voicemails from the other’s mother (blame it on 411), mixed-up files at a doctor’s office and, since they both work at colleges, even a home-addresses swap in the state’s personnel database. Stacy Smallwood & Sallie Holder | Twinsanity The problem with Stacy and Sallie is that they usually run in very different circles. Stacy, the owner of Hampden Clothing, a King Street boutique consistently recognized by Vogue, and Sallie, the chief operating officer of a business and taxation law firm, are often mistaken for the other. “Last Christmas I was shopping in Grady Ervin and one of the guys asked why I wasn’t talking,” says Sallie. “They seriously thought Stacy was playing a joke on them. They made me get her from her store to show them that we were two different people!” Thankfully for us, the identical twins have dealt with the confusion their whole lives. “We never get upset when someone calls us the wrong name, we’ve always answered to both names,” swears Sallie. (Although, if you’re pressed to make a guess, Sallie’s always the one in glasses.) “Being a twin is unlike any relationship I’ve experienced; you have your biggest critic and your biggest fan wrapped up into one,” says Stacy. Liz Ryan & Kari Kim | Kindred Spirits Liz and Kari were a couple of soccer moms “trudging our kids around from tournament to tournament in various cities, wanting to enjoy what each community had to offer,” says Liz. After finding the same chains and big box shops in each town, they began to hatch a plan for an online multi-city directory and ongoing blog (“the where-to and the how-to” says Kari). “Two Doors Down is two-fold, we live two doors down from one another and we want people to discover what is right around the corner—or just two doors down,” says Liz. Based entirely on suggestions by locals, the gals say they’ll grow as they get recommendations. “We want the process to be organic, making sure we are offering the community a true combination of knowledge and insight,” says Kari. “Many people want to support mom and pop shops but don’t know how to find what they are looking for, so this puts that information at their fingertips.” Photo by Alice Keeney

ednesday Night Dart Night. Single and in my early thirties, a friend who had experienced my competitive nature and lived to tell the tale suggested dart league at the local Irish pub could be a fun place to meet men. While I did love the idea of throwing sharp pointy things, I remained dubious. Meeting men in a bar sounded so...meeting men in a bar. But I was tired of drinking café lattes at Starbucks alone with a good book while not-so-secretly trolling for sensitive types. (Sorry, “girl alone with book at Starbucks,” we all know what you’re doing). I agreed to go. From the moment I stepped into that bar, I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. I knew the tall, brown-haired guy talking to the blonde with the impossible tits was the one for me. Him, or the guy in the back who looked like Pierce Brosnan. A soft spot in my heart for Remington Steele opened that small window of possibility.

With a little determination...you can take a tiny mustard seed, seven tables, three employees, and grow a whole family of restaurants. Remington stood surrounded by an entourage of enraptured beta-men, spinning the tale of his latest conquest. His night of passion had ended with the girl requesting an escort home. He refused. “But it’s dangerous out there!” she told him. Remington opened the kitchen drawer, found a knife, handed it to her, mumbled “There you go” and shuffled back to bed. The entourage erupted into laughter. “Stranger Danger” bells ringing in my head, I removed Remington from the running. The players gathered to pick Dart Night teams. Bribing the guy in charge to team me with The One proved impossible. On the upside, “Tits” had left the building. I heaved a sigh of relief. Against that girl, my breasts were like bringing marbles to an A-bomb fight. And we’re not talking Little Boy. We’re talking Fat Man. Teamed with one of the better players (much to his chagrin) and not the object of my desire (much to my chagrin) I had a fantastic evening drinking vodka and sodas with a splash of cranberry. I tried to explain the irresistible pull of The One. Tall, clean, thin; he was definitely my type. He even had blue eyes and beguiling lips capped on one side by a hybrid dimple/laugh line. Sure, if I was going to build him like a car online, I probably would have thinned out his nose and sharpened his jaw, but that was getting really picky. He was also in his early thirties hanging out in a bar playing darts, but I couldn’t really complain too much about that thanks to the whole “glass houses” thing. Physically, it was easy to see why I was attracted to him. The confusing part was why I had the sort of feelings for him that usually came after I actually spoke to someone and recognized a kindred spirit. I awoke the next morning consumed with how that blue-eyed devil had stolen my heart, vowing to return to the scene of the crime. First, I washed my sheets, hair, clothes and coat because everything smelled like smoke. At least when you came back from trolling at Starbucks you smelled like coffee and jazz CDs. I spent the rest of the day planning my outfit, my hair, my banter. I returned to the pub at the crack of happy hour to find it empty but for two people: a bleach-blonde guy and The One. Luck? Fate? Stalker intuition? Something had brought us back together. Vodka, perhaps. I spent the next few hours talking with The One while the other guy did his best to pull my eyes towards him. He didn’t know he was fighting destiny, poor thing. The One was funny! He seemed nice! He was a Sagittarius like me! We had instant rapport! And what a coincidence that we should meet again the next day! As the rest of the dart crowd rolled in, I quietly blended in with the others. After all, I wanted him to like me, not file a restraining order. The next day, after another morning of de-smoking and primping, I made my way to the furniture store The One managed, hardly even disappointed that he hadn’t turned out to be an award-winning playwright or Internet mogul. I entered the store. The One looked up from his desk. His face twitched with recognition. At the last minute, I decided not to buy a convertible sofa and just cut to the chase. “I was wondering if, I dunno, maybe sometime you’d be interested in going to lunch?” Our eyes locked, my stomach crawled into my throat, and I stood there for something like three or four days. “Oh,” he said. “I can’t. I have a girlfriend.” Realizing someone was going to have to pull out the paddles if I didn’t resume breathing, I released a shaky sigh. Awkward smiling and hands flailing, I explained it was no biggie sorry to have bothered you see you at darts nice place you have here ok well I guess I better get back to work bye! I turned to scurry out of the store, my face as red as the throw pillows on the $999 pullout couch behind me. That’s when The One called out to me. “Don’t forget me!” I froze. My head swivelled and I blinked at him. Did he just say, “Don’t forget me?” Who says that? “Um, ok,” I said, and headed back to my car, my heart hopeful. I didn’t forget him. t was 2003, and I was tired of wanting to go to Barcelona. I first became eager to get there during a high school trip to Spain in 1989. Although we had read a lot about Antoni Gaudi’s famous Barcelona architecture in Spanish class, the city was disappointingly not on our travel itinerary. Naturally, I wanted what I couldn’t have. By 1999, I was an adult with a thirst for new adventures. Right on cue, there was Barcelona among the “Places of a Lifetime” in a magazine I happened to pick up. The article made it sound like such a cool city—with an essence that was simply impossible to experience anywhere else. I really wanted to see this place for myself. Barcelona remained in my mental “one of these days” file until 2002. A trip to southern France for my cousin’s wedding that summer placed me a stone’s throw from the Spanish border, and the longing returned. This time, I felt compelled to take action. I pitched a Barcelona trip idea to different friends over the next several months, and most responded with ready enthusiasm. However, when it came time to talk about actual plans, excuses came forth just as quickly. Low on funds. Not enough vacation time. Scheduling conflicts. I heard it all. In early 2003, just when I’d had enough of other people’s limitations becoming my own, there was an epiphany: Stop waiting for everyone else, Gail.

The past year has been like a grainy black-and-white movie, moody and melancholy and seemingly relentless in its duration. with the wings of my soul
Now that I’m emerging unfolding around me, I’m amazed
at how bright the colors look, at the variety of cloud formations that drift by so often, at the new people who have come into my life, at the stirrings of an urge to write again when for so long it has been hard and difficult and dreaded.
The way I feel
reminds me of lines from one of my favorite Dylan songs:
“Ah, but I was so much older then/I’m younger than that now.” I’ve always been fascinated by alchemy, and this book teaches you how to transform your inner world and thus the outer one as well. “As above, so below.”
My new Hunter Wellies make me wish for rainy days and mud or a horse stall to muck out. (I don’t want to ride a horse but just look the part. Shallowly yours.)
On constant replay: I never tire of listening to “Beloved,” my favorite song from the underrated album, Seastories, by actress Minnie Driver. (Can’t understand why Matt Damon dumped her!)
The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art is one of my favorite places in Charleston to find inspiration. This month brings an exhibit of Aggie Zed’s work.
Can’t wait to fill up this 100-page pad because once a page is completed, I can tear off the perforated quote on the bottom and put it on my mood board or tape it in my journal.
