Single in the City? It’s 7pm Saturday night and Jane, an attractive 40-something and recently divorced professional, decides it’s time to meet new people. So…with conviction and excitement, Jane scans her Day-Timer with the sole purpose of rounding up two of her old friends and hitting the town for a night out. February is our love theme and when I was trying to write my editorial, a coworker mentioned she’d had a dream that I wrote a book called Sexless in the City. Haha, Julie, very funny. Isn’t your personnel evaluation coming up soon? If I were going to write a book about sex, it would probably be called WTF, with the W standing for Where. My younger friends keep urging me to be a cougar...as if I could just decide to channel Demi Moore and pull down a fresh-faced college boy to drag around town. Oh honey, if only. I think I’m smart, sophisticated, funny and definitely more comfortable with my sexuality than I was in my 20s, but I know plenty of women just like me and they don’t have Ashton Kutchers waiting in line either. Granted, I have a lot to offer—I’m still working fulltime, taking spinning classes, using a computer, iPhone and Nintendo DS (okay, that one is stupid), trying to do my bit to fight global warming and mountain-top removal and never holding up the airport security line by dithering about what’s legal to take in my carry-on; but collagen-deprived cleavage is not appearing draped and propped up on the arms of many Abercrombie and Fitch male models. At my age, I can be a great broad, a good sport, a cute senior, but for god’s sake I better not try to bring sexy back. I get the impression that grandmothers are supposed to be gender neutral, only getting aroused by Downton Abbey or an early-bird buffet. But just in case you look at your grandmother and think that the only thing on her mind is you, your problems or her bad back, think again. Chances are she might be admiring the bum of the guy waiting on her table at lunch, considering skipping the usual Christmas family fight and going to a nude beach by herself, or even writing erotica in her spare time. Way to go, Nana.

harder to fathom your reaction to life’s lovely curveballs. Even Nancy, one of our profiles, was initially doubtful about a marriage proposal by Dick. Likewise, when water came through the ceiling of the house I’d owned for less than 24 hours, I pulled the light fixtures out, aimed a fan at the holes and, like Nancy, had a good night’s sleep hoping it would all look better in the morning (I ❤ new memory foam mattress). My ceiling is still there and 61 years later, Dick and Nancy are at Starbucks most weekdays, meeting friends and strangers and telling their stories together over tea. This month, whether it’s a question of lifetime-of-love or is-the-sky-falling, listen to that voice of optimism, and then maybe sleep on it. There’s nothing that can’t be fixed with a whirlwind romance or a little spackle and Kilz (I ❤ home repair).

It’s a small paperback book of love poems, small enough to slip inside your purse, or maybe a wide pocket. Small but potent. Desire drips off the pages. Lust leaps from verse to verse. These are juicy, saucy love poems, playful, hopeful and occasionally raw. They ooze with the “I’ve gotten around” savvy of a 65-year-old woman. I bought Nikki Giovanni’s book of love poems as a gift for my husband, but I really bought it because of the title, Bicycles, and the cover— a sexy photo of a fire engine red vintage-style cruiser, with seductive curves and small cheery flowers on the fenders. It’s a happy bike, and I’m a sucker for bicycles. In the cover photo, Giovanni, with her closecropped gray hair, café-au-lait skin and sassy red lipstick, dressed like David Byrne in a baggy white linen suit, is holding on to the chrome handlebars, looking down, chuckling to herself: “Yea baby, we’re going for a ride,” she seems to be saying. Inside the book, each of the 65 poems ends with a small black-andwhite graphic of the bike from the cover, jauntily akimbo on its kickstand. Sometimes the bike graphic is centered in white space after the last line of the poem, sometimes it’s smaller and off to the side, tucked at a bottom corner by the page number. It moves around page to page, as if parked willy-nilly after the poet has hopped off. Bikes symbolically punctuate the book, a repetitive visual presence, but only the title poem mentions the word bicycle: “Midnight poems are bicycles/Taking us on safer journeys/Than jets/Quicker journeys/Than walking/But never as beautiful/A journey/As my back/Touching you under the quilt…”. The only other reference is a short epigram in a tiny font—easy to overlook. “Bicycles: because love requires trust and balance,” the poet explains. Yes, bicycles: Because I was first smitten by a blue Schwinn with a cushy fat seat when I was seven. Bicycles: Because love means taking chances, falling off, getting back on, looking both ways. Bicycles: Because I’ve adored every bike I’ve had since that first Schwinn, including my 1976 red, white and blue Bicentennial edition 10-speed Varsity, followed by a used Carolina blue 12-speed road bike that I pedaled through the Blue Ridge mountains one summer in college. Bicycles: Because love requires a willingness to get on and go, to use brakes wisely, to endure sore quads. Bicycles: Because they’re so simple, yet can be so complex, especially if you’re trying to buy a new one, as I was recently, and ego and vanity begin to cloud the relationship. I’m not sure if Nikki Giovanni considered a razzle-dazzle high modulus (whatever that is) carbon-frame road machine for her cover model, but it would have certainly changed her book’s “let’s romp and roll around” appeal. After spending months reading mystifying bike reviews trying to decipher exactly how one compares “stiff, strong and light” to “responsive and forgiving, with crisp shifting,” I long for the intentional ambiguity of poetry rather than the mumbo-jumbo of bike specs. Bicycles: Because, like love, the relationship gets more complicated when you need and ask more of it. My new dream bike is fast and good-looking, fits comfortably and responds readily when I say go, yet doesn’t make me feel out of control. It says, “whoa, she’s serious,” but isn’t cookie-cutter, or too serious. But the more I comparison shop, the more I am overwhelmed by wheel base measurements, seat post materials and front derailleur mounts—details I don’t have a clue about—and the more I realize, whoa, that’s way too serious (and expensive). That ain’t at all what it’s about. The joy for me is in the riding, in the wind in my face, and the road unwinding before me, not in having the highest of high tech machines. The joy is the love of getting on and going—the simple, pure poetry of riding. I settled for a new “used” bike endorsed by a trusted friend, not by a slick marketing campaign. “Bicycles move/With the flow/Of the earth/Like a cloud/So quiet/In the October sky/Like licking ice cream/From a cone/Like knowing you/ Will always/Be there…,” Giovanni continues in her title poem. In an interview with Bill Moyers, she also acknowledges that who and what we love will not “always/Be there.” Trauma and tragedy are the two perpetually spinning wheels, she says, “the perimeters of life” that we try to bring together. “And when you bring them together you’ve got the bar, right? So you have a vehicle, right?…Love and life and bicycles are about trust and balance, about riding it and believing that this thing that doesn’t make sense for you to be on, can move.” Yes, dear poet, move it will, and must. Love compels it, and so does my new bike. Brooks Bostick is racing to the top. It started almost four years ago, when Brooks got his first road bike as a gift so he could get around the Holy City during college. What ended up being a useful gift also awakened something in Brooks. “The bike was made to take on long rides and I decided to give it a shot and rode it for 20 miles, then 50 on my next ride. I got pretty hooked.” A late bloomer as far as competitive cycling is concerned, Brooks has only pushed harder to make up for lost time. “I placed second in my first race and never looked back.” Professional cycling requires constant travel and fairly consistent financial backing, so Brooks and Co. recently started Palmetto Endurance Sports, “I took the initiative and started a sports management company to run the team we talked about making. Team names change according to title sponsors but P.E.S. is the constant in our mix.” What do you like most about wearing a skirt? “Besides the fact I fit into a size zero? Our Story
Dick & Nancy Valelly | Long-time Loves Dick and Nancy met in 1951 while he was working abroad and she happened to be visiting a friend in Venezuela. It was love at first sight for Dick, who asked Nancy to marry him two weeks later. Nancy said no, and then changed her mind in the morning. Through multiple countries, they’ve had kids, grandkids and plenty of adventure. Dick: “My father told me two things: First, always tip your hat to a lady and second, marry a girl that’s fun. I said that girl is gonna be mine.” Nancy: “After I said no, I went home and thought about it that night. ike, whom I had been romantically stalking for some time, had escaped his ex-girlfriend and needed a place to live. I lived in a house with a dog and a huge crush on Mike, neither of which required much space. We were at a tenuous moment in our courtship, and I felt keeping Mike near would cement our bond. To me, the answer to his housing problem seemed as obvious as the empty drawer in my bureau, but he thought it tacky to move from one girl’s house right into another’s. I told him he could stay with me, temporarily, while I helped him find an apartment. I used the word “temporarily” quite a bit during these negotiations, which of course is Smitten Kitten Speak for “forever.” I further eased Mike’s reluctance by explaining the whole process would be beneficial to me, because he would be there to help me eat the big, delicious dinners I cooked for myself every night for no apparent reason. And, bonus: I had just read a book that proposed giving nightly back rubs could increase typing speed. Finally, I would have a back on which to test this theory. What a relief. Mike could see it was a clear win-win situation. I emptied out a closet and hid anything that could be perceived as a “shrine” so as to avoid spooking my nervous beau. Photos taken during our first date, photos of our second date, photos I took while he wasn’t looking using a high-powered telescopic lens; I put away all these cherished mementos. Spiders don’t hang Christmas lights on their webs.

The Apartment That Wasn’t
Groove Girl Consignments A few days of co-habitation went by with no mention of the apartment search. I don’t remember if we were eating a slow-roasted chicken or perfectly medium-rare steak, but I do recall the fork hanging on Mike’s adorable lip one evening as he scanned the room as if he’d never noticed it before. He’d spotted the pile of mail, each envelope sporting my name. It reminded him that this was my house, not his. I’d meant to move that. “I need to start looking for my apartment,” he said. “Oh sure,” I agreed. “Hey, how about those Raiders?” “I’m serious.” “Of course! Hey, how was work?” “It was fine, but we need to start looking for an apartment...” “Naturally! Hey, is that a hummingbird outside?” My diversionary tactics would last a few more days before Mike officially started the apartment hunt. The first apartment I found for him promised a large bedroom and a porch. The car barely slowed as we rolled by the dismal brick box situated in one of the sketchier neighborhoods. Rust stains oozed down the walls and the visible stairwell sported drying clothes draped over the handrails. It looked just as depressing as when I’d scoped it out the day before. I told Mike that most apartments in his price range would look something like this. He didn’t believe me. But he also didn’t ask to go in. Cue the back rub. Cue the fabulous home-cooked dinner. The next place was right on Main Street. The idea of downtown living had him giddy. The apartment was small but doable. The rent was large and not. “Maybe I could make it work?” he mumbled. “It is way out of your price range,” I told him. “Shame. I should have never even brought you here.” Cue the back rub. Cue the fabulous home-cooked dinner. The last apartment sat atop a garage behind an old lady’s home. It was nearly Christmas, and Mike’s potential landlord had more glowing reindeer on her lawn than the entire herd population of Norway. By the time Mike and I started up the stairs to the apartment, the blinking multi-colored lights on her porch had burned star-bursts upon our retinas. I would have nightmares about the gyrating Santa for a week. Unlike the landlord’s taste in holiday decorations, the apartment was perfect. It was in Mike’s price range. It was close to downtown. I started growing nervous. “It seems pretty nice,” said Mike. I grunted, desperately searching for reasons to hate the place. “It’s pretty close to downtown, it’s in my price range...” I opened the cabinet under the sink praying for mice. Mike nodded. “It’s pretty much what I need...” Landlord clapped her hands with glee. “And here’s the best part!” she said. “I’ll be right there!” She pointed to her own home, just a few steps down the driveway, glowing like the sun, brought to you by Target. I felt a pin-light of hope pierce my heavy heart. “Go on...” I said. “You remind me of my son,” Landlord continued. “I can bring you dinners up here when I make the crock pot meals!” I covered my mouth to keep from yelping with joy. Fear flashed in Mike’s eyes. “No, I wouldn’t need dinner...” he stammered. “Oh no trouble at all!” said Landlord. “I can stop by any time! I’m right there!” I fought the urge to high-five Landlord. She couldn’t have ended this interview faster if she’d confessed to being a serial killer in the process of building herself a Polish Guy suit. Mike would never live in an apartment where an old woman sporting a crock pot could appear at his door at any given moment. “Well, we’ll get back to you, thanks so much!” said Mike, moving toward the exit. I followed. “Thank you,” I said, shaking Landlord’s hand as I passed. “Seriously. Thank you.” That was the last apartment we ever viewed. We still drive by that house at Christmas and laugh. Nearly as loudly as I laugh when Mike asks whatever happened to nightly back rubs.

ike most married couples, my husband Jonathan and I have many pacts—no cheating, no badmouthing each others’ parents, no going to bed mad. Our agreements are the glue that holds us together. One of our pacts is to never take up birdwatching. Jonathan and I spent way too much time as kids trapped in some swamp while our parents cooed over coots. We once took a hike with our friend, Peter, an avid birder. Eyes downcast, my husband and I listened politely as he droned on about
plumage and wing span. “Oh,” Peter said, at last noticing our silence. “Children of birdwatchers.” Since we have our youthful resentments to uphold, we cling to our pact even though every binocular-toting couple we know is happily married. Birdwatching may unite others, but not Jonathan and me. If one of us strays, pulse quickened by a downy breast, it’s grounds for divorce. Still, as long-term marrieds, we’re always on the lookout for new ways to spice up our relationship. The forbidden, even birding, holds allure. So what if it’s like watching paint dry? That’s how we recently found ourselves driving to the delta with our friends Steve and Mary to catch the last of the sand hill cranes before they headed south. For the Birds
Puppy Love Before we embark, my husband and I renew our vows. “Promise me we won’t become birdwatchers,” I implore. “I do,” Jonathan pledges. Steve and Mary have an exemption. They even have a temporary placard for disabled parking. Sidelined from favored pursuits like hiking and backpacking by surgery, they have entered the phase of life Steve refers to as “recalibrated pleasures.” They’ve traded in their boots for Roger Tory Peterson’s Field Guides and sunk a few thousand dollars into birding paraphernalia. No doubt they’re faking it, forced to find the silver lining in an unjust fate. We’ll be safe with Steve and Mary. We pile into the backseat of their car. After a drive that lasts forever, strip malls give way to fields of rice stubble. We pull onto the shoulder of the levee dam road. “Look at the swans!” Steve and Mary exult in unison. It occurs to me that they’re not pretending. The side of the road is littered with parked cars with trunks that yield vast arsenals of birding material. Pot-bellied men hoist huge tripods onto beefy shoulders. Except for their girth and Audubon Society t-shirts, they could be mistaken for guerrillas sporting shoulder-mounted grenade launchers. Birders are a passionate lot. Within a 10-mile radius, only my husband and I are cool to the wonders of feathered fauna. At least I hope Jonathan still is. He seems suspiciously enthralled as Mary explains the difference between divers and dabblers. Steve spots the cranes on a distant bank. Even I have to admit they’re spectacular. After about 10 minutes of genuine oohing and another few of feigned ahhing, I’m ready to climb back in the car and head for civilization, or at least a Starbucks in one of those strip malls. But people who routinely drive 100 miles in search of creatures they can’t see without expensive equipment are not prepared to settle for such a small return on their investment. So we look at the cranes. We look at ducks. We look some more. Birding is like time-lapse photography in reverse. The day slows down and stretches out in a languorous slow-motion crawl of nothing much happening. We drive farther. A chain-link fence separates the road from a plot of barren land. Steve spies a thin white line close to the horizon. “Might be white pelicans. On the other hand, it might be plastic garbage bags,” he says with quiet excitement, as if either outcome would please him equally. Has his sense of pleasure been so radically recalibrated? We train the binoculars on the barely discernible thread of white. Sure enough, they’re pelicans. But heaped together in a slovenly pile, these pelicans look like garbage bags with wing spans fluttering listlessly in the breeze. Perhaps it’s some kind of rare hybrid species: Feathered trash. The day moseys along toward sunset. Mud hens are now indistinguishable from mud in the long shadows swallowing up the fields. The sky is streaked with cotton-candy wisps of pink and smoky gray. It is also streaked with birds, flying in formations that, truth be told, look a bit ragged. No perfect, straight-edged Vs for these cranes and geese! Maybe they’re bored, too, and want to mix things up a little. I think of my friend who took his family to see Winged Migration. Ten minutes into the film, his eight-year-old daughter elbowed him and said, “So this is it, huh? It’s just gonna be birds and then more birds all the way through.” I’m with that girl! But is my husband still with me? He’s keeping up a steady stream of delighted chatter, admiring how graceful the airborne cranes look when they’re not stuck on land with their unruly necks and legs all akimbo. Jonathan’s enthusiasm makes me nervous until I realize that I, too, sound like I’m going to log on to one of those birding chat rooms the second I’m near a computer. I sidle up to Jonathan in the gathering darkness and whisper, “You haven’t gone over to the light side, have you?” He smiles and squeezes my hand hard, twice, our secret code. Birds of a feather flocking together. Such a man I have married! Black silhouettes fly against a crimson sky; white lies fly below. “It’s so beautiful,” I exclaim, this time sincerely. Not only because together my husband and I have resisted the call of the wild, but because of how the bloodshot-turning-charcoal clouds are reflected in the little pools of water dotting the furrows. The delta at twilight looks like sepia shards from a shattered kaleidoscope. We stow the scopes, the tripods, the binoculars, the books back in the trunk. Relieved, we climb into the car and head for home. Steve and Mary point out raptors on the power lines while Jonathan and I hold hands silently, eyes closed, in the backseat.

Our minds are hungry for facts, concrete answers, a precise map. We forget that, like Magellan, we’re meant to learn to steer by the stars, like the adventurers we truly are.

musician friend recently said that all Gaelic love songs can really be boiled down to one theme, “I loved you from afar and now you’re dead.” I’m glad to be able to refute this view. As a working psychic, I’ve found that people who ask me about romance are more hopeful about the topic. Most of us have stars in our eyes, no matter how tarnished, and secret melodies in our heads. But no one wishes to be caught being sappy—we hem and haw, pretending we have more important things to think about. I think of the young woman who sat at my festive mystic’s table at a school grad night celebration, or the 60-year-old man who came a little sheepishly to my office, or the female lawyer in Florida who called for a telephone session. “What’s going to happen in my future?” each one asks. When I probe a bit deeper, it turns out that at least one of the questions is really, “What’s going to happen in my love life?” Teenagers are usually braver than adults, but almost everybody hesitates to ask about romance directly for fear of sounding trite or impractical, or just like a second-grader wondering about fairies and dragons. Years of doing reflections readings with others have shown me that love—that mysterious, compelling connection to our real selves—is always on our minds in one way or another. Partnerships and solitude are two of the ways we learn more about it. Why on earth wouldn’t we long to know about relationships? But finding out about relationships and romance turns out to be complicated. Consider Siberia, a vast region of 5.2 million square miles, a fact which is difficult to comprehend. If Siberia (like matters of the heart) was just one country, you could traverse it easily almost just by asking about it. However, Siberia has eight time zones, through which you would pass if you happened to take the Trans-Siberian Railway, which is a seven-day trip from Moscow to Vladivostok. Most people picture Siberia as a land of howling arctic wastes sprinkled with penal colonies, but the truth is more complex. Western Siberia is covered by a swampy plain, the central plateau is a tangle of thick forest, the east reveals soaring mountaintops. Only the extreme north is actual tundra, with temperatures below -68 Centigrade in winter.
Fooling around online, I realized that you can even go to Siberia for free, in your pajamas and in complete comfort, by clicking on a website and taking a real-time virtual journey courtesy of the Google/Russian Railways project. I loved not having to pack an overcoat or buy a ticket. Rumbling along on my fascinating cyber-trek, I found that I could jump ahead on the tracks to see Lake Baikal, retrace any portion of the trip, and if I got bored with the scenery, I could rush miles ahead to a different spot along the Abur River. But if you travel across Siberia via computer, there’s not the slightest chance of meeting the couple on the train who insists on sharing their bread and borscht with you, or hearing the poignant, halting story which the widow tells about her husband relocating their family to Novosibirsk, or shivering as the young gymnast thrills you while recounting her spine-tingling rafting trip in Southern Siberia. You won’t notice the handsome blonde man in the crimson scarf with an English paperback copy of The Great Gatsby on his lap, and you can’t nod “yes” when he asks you to dinner after you both debark. “Will David and I get married?” “How many children will I have?” “Should I leave my partner?” Our minds are hungry for facts, concrete answers, a precise map. We forget that, like Magellan, we’re meant to learn to steer by the stars, like the adventurers we truly are. So many times we want to skip ahead to the last page of our own romantic saga, but it’s a little like asking a friend about an intriguing movie you haven’t yet seen. Even if she tells you that the romantic lead in the film is a 6’4” Englishman who works in the field of higher education and has a dog named Huckleberry, you still haven’t actually seen the movie—all you know is a few details. You haven’t experienced the near-misses and subsequent exhilaration which weave together the story of how the two lovers meet, or glimpsed the profound meaning which reveals itself just before the closing credits roll. You might even pay less attention to some of the characters in the movie who don’t have dogs or British accents, and thereby miss crucial elements of the entire plot. If only we can learn to love our scars, relationship mistakes, longing for connection, all the difficulties and loneliness which a true quest involves. We need our restless, stubborn questions, even when no answers are forthcoming. Christopher Columbus, bankrolled by Spanish royalty, sailed away four times across the Atlantic to reach the East Indies. He messed up badly, and discovered the Americas. Thank goodness no one happened to tell him India just wasn’t in the cards.

If I were rich, I’d buy Indian summer and bring it out for a few hours in February to give everyone a treat. I’m jonesing for January, for winter clothes and kickin’ boots,

crisp edge to the air. But by January, I remember how much I hate dripping faucets on freezing nights emerging from my down den on icy mornings and tiptoeing across the uninsulated tile floor of my bathroom.
I fight back
by stockpiling lots of little creature comforts to
give winter a cold shoulder.
On Constant Replay: Just can’t help it. “Turn It Into Love” by Kylie Minogue makes me want to flirt with strangers, turn up the heat, go dirty dancing.
I try to hang my largerthan-life-size anxieties on these oversized worry beads from sightunseen.com and then let go of them.
I snagged a free sample tin of Besame tinted lip balm from a coworker. It has enough kisses to get me through to summer.
I found this four-foot wooden mermaid tucked into a corner of the Wabi Sabi shop near my house. I couldn’t resist her siren song, and now she lives in a corner of my living room, reminding me of myth and magic on the most ordinary day.
I like to light a tatine woodsmoke candle at night and let the deep notes of winter swirl through the air: cedar moss, fir balsam, smoky kindling, natural clove and fir needle oils.
