Homeownership has long been considered a cornerstone of the American Dream. For many, home is a symbol of stability, security, and opportunity.
For Garrett and Dawn, home had become a single crowded room shared by five people- three young children and a large dog. After a dramatic rent increase forced the lifelong Indian River County residents out of their home, they searched tirelessly for another affordable place to live. However, with housing costs continuing to rise, every option of stability felt out of reach.
Thankfully, their family stepped in to help, offering temporary shelter, but the tight living conditions made daily life challenging and uncertain. Still, Dawn and Garrett refused to give up on creating a better future for their children.
Garrett, who works as a land surveyor, learned about Indian River Habitat’s Homebuyer Program through a coworker who has once been in their shoes and is now a Habitat homeowner himself. Inspired by his story, the couple decided to take a leap of faith and apply.
Upon their acceptance, Dawn and Garrett worked diligently to complete their sweat-equity hours, hope replacing uncertainty. “We wouldn’t be able to do this without the [Habitat] program,” they share. Dawn added, “I’ve already learned quite a few things through the program,” adding that both are looking forward to the “stability and comfort” of homeownership.
For Garrett and Dawn, Habitat gave them more than a house - it laid the foundation for a brighter future for their family.
