Santo Coyote Mexican Kitchen
Can you provide a brief overview of your business and services?
Santo Coyote Mexican Kitchen is a women-owned, family-run restaurant in La Conner led by mother-daughter team Ofelia, Cristal, and Belen. Every dish is made fresh from scratch daily by Ofelia, bringing authentic Mexican flavors to life. We’re especially proud of our handmade margaritas crafted with house-made mixers, and we also offer full-service catering and offsite bar services for weddings, celebrations, and community events—bringing the same warmth and hospitality beyond our dining room.
How do you stay motivated and innovative in a competitive market? Our motivation comes from family and community—seeing guests
gather around a meal we’ve created together keeps us inspired. We stay innovative by blending traditional Mexican flavors with fresh ideas, from seasonal menu items to handcrafted cocktails. Listening to our customers and trusting our instincts allows us to evolve while staying true to the heart and authenticity that define Santo Coyote.
Have you faced any challenges specific to being a local business in this area? As a restaurant in a touristdependent town, we experience busy summers and slower winters, which can be challenging. But this also encourages us to connect more deeply with our local community, who continue to support us yearround. The seasonal rhythm has taught us adaptability, creativity, and how to make every guest experience
meaningful—no matter the time of year.
How do you engage with the local community and support local causes? Community involvement is a cornerstone of Santo Coyote. We’re proud to host and support fundraisers throughout the year, including our annual Jingle Belles Ladies Night benefiting the local food bank and La Conner High School senior class events. We also donate and partner with schools and local organizations whenever we can. Giving back to the community that supports us is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.
Do you have a favorite travel memory? Some of our favorite memories are from our trips back home to Guadalajara, Mexico, where we
reconnect with family and find endless inspiration in the local food and drink culture. We love exploring street markets and bringing back new ideas, flavors, and special treats for our guests to enjoy here. Those experiences keep us grounded in our roots and
remind us why sharing authentic Mexican cuisine is so meaningful to us. Santo Coyote Mexican Kitchen E 201 Morris St, La Conner, WA 98257 (360) 466-0555 santocoyotemexican.com

Whispering Willows of Mount Vernon
What inspired you to start your own business?
After spending most of my nursing career working with seniors—especially those living with dementia—I saw firsthand how many individuals were falling through the cracks. Too often, people who have outlived their savings or who display challenging behaviors are left isolated at home, cared for by exhausted family members, or placed in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities that aren’t designed for their needs. I wanted to create something different—an affordable, compassionate, and enriching environment where all individuals living with dementia could receive the care and dignity they deserve. Whispering Willows was born from that vision.
Can you provide a brief overview of your business and the services you offer? Whispering Willows is a fullservice, specialized dementia care community dedicated to supporting individuals at every stage of their journey. We provide assistance with all activities of daily living— from active residents to those who are fully bed-bound. Our staff is highly trained in dementia care and behavioral health support, ensuring each resident receives personalized and compassionate attention. We also cater to specialized dietary needs and offer a full range of engaging, stimulating activities from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. Every aspect of our community is designed to enhance quality of life, promote meaningful connection, and bring joy to everyday moments.
What sets your business apart from others in the same industry? Whispering Willows is locally owned and operated by nurses with decades of experience in memory care—a rarity in today’s senior living industry. Our handson background means we deeply understand what our residents need to thrive.
goskagit.com
We believe in creating a true home, not just a facility. Our residents enjoy freshly prepared, flavorful meals; music that stirs memories and emotions; and daily interactions that nurture both body and spirit. At Whispering Willows, we see the person behind the diagnosis, and our care reflects that belief.
How do you maintain a positive company culture within your business? A positive workplace starts with respect and appreciation. We treat every employee fairly, pay a livable wage, and give bonuses to all employees, recognizing their exceptional performances. We’re committed to providing opportunities for both personal and professional growth within Whispering Willows. We also encourage our staff to be active in the community, whether serving on local boards or volunteering at events. When employees feel valued and connected, that positivity flows directly into the care they provide.
How do you engage with the local community and support local causes? Community involvement is a cornerstone of who we are. Whispering Willows proudly sponsors and volunteers at numerous local events. We support Meals on Wheels, provide Thanksgiving turkeys for the Boys & Girls Club, raise funds for the Sedro-Woolley High School Music Department, and contribute to Skagit County Senior Centers. We also partner with the Skagit Adult Day Program (The Bradford House) by providing meals for their “Lunch and Learn” sessions. Giving back is our way of staying connected and strengthening the community that supports us.
What is the most rewarding aspect of running your business? The most rewarding part is seeing the joy and peace on our residents’ faces—knowing they’re living their
best possible life despite dementia. Hearing gratitude from family members who finally see their loved ones thriving again is deeply moving.
It’s also incredibly fulfilling to receive appreciation from staff who are proud to work in a place that values both their efforts and the people they care for. Those shared moments of connection remind us why we do what we do every single day.
How do you ensure the quality of your services? Quality starts with presence. As the Executive Director—and as a nurse—I’m actively involved in the day-to-day operations and ready to step in at any moment. Our team members are carefully selected not just for their skills but for their heart. They want to be here, and that makes all the difference. We also prioritize continuous training, open communication, and constant evaluation to ensure we’re always improving and delivering the best possible care.
Can you share a significant milestone or accomplishment your business has achieved? Whispering Willows has achieved several exciting milestones since opening: Licensed on September 23, 2024 Accepted into the Specialized Dementia Care Program (SDCP) on September 26, 2024—a distinction typically reserved for facilities with at least one year of operation Included in the Enhanced Specialized Dementia Care Program (ESDCP) Welcomed our first resident on October 1, 2024 Achieved a Deficiency-Free State Survey within our first year—an incredibly rare accomplishment Voted Best Memory Care in Skagit Valley, 2025 Each milestone represents our team’s dedication, compassion, and commitment to excellence.
What role does technology play in your business operations? Technology enhances nearly every aspect of our operations— from electronic medical records and communication systems to entertainment and resident engagement. Our facility is fully equipped with Wi-Fi throughout, and we incorporate technology into our music therapy, theater activities, and administrative systems. While we’re rooted in personal connection, we embrace modern tools that help us deliver smarter, safer, and more efficient care.
Have you always been an entrepreneur, or did you have a different career path before starting this business? My primary career has always been in nursing, though I also previously owned and operated an Adult Family Home. Those experiences shaped my understanding of both the medical and business sides of
care, giving me the foundation to build Whispering Willows with a blend of clinical expertise and genuine compassion.
How do you see your business contributing to the growth and development of the local economy? We’re proud to create local jobs that offer fair wages, growth potential, and stability. By sourcing products and services from local vendors whenever possible, we help support other small businesses in Skagit Valley. Looking ahead, we plan to open a second senior community in the region—further expanding opportunities for employment, partnership, and compassionate care right here at home. Evolve Permanent Makeup Founder: Terra Forkner
What inspired you to start your business?
Evolve’s approach to beauty and client care?
I wanted to create a space where women feel seen, valued, and beautiful, inside and out. Evolve was born from faith, passion, and the love of helping women rediscover their confidence through natural artistry.
Our focus has always been on soft, natural, and lasting beauty. I believe in enhancing what’s already there — not changing it. My technique is designed to create results that heal beautifully and feel authentic to each person. Every service comes from a place of care, precision, and a genuine desire to make clients feel confident and comfortable.
What motivated you to start your business in this particular industry? I’ve always loved both art and people. Permanent makeup allowed me to merge creativity, precision, and connection, it’s more than beauty, it’s restoration. I’m deeply passionate about giving back to the community by offering free brow services to cancer survivors. It’s my way of helping restore confidence and beauty during and after one of life’s toughest battles — because everyone deserves to feel like themselves again.
What is the story behind your business name? “Evolve” represents growth, becoming who God designed you to be. It’s about transformation, confidence, and embracing change beautifully.
What sets your business apart? We focus on natural results, not trends. Our work is customized for every client, every skin type and every stage of life, delivered in a calm, welcoming environment.
What services do you offer? Hyperrealism Brows, Powder Brows, Combo Brows, Eyeliner, Lip Blush, and now esthetics, facials, lashes, brow laminations, tinting, and waxing.
How would you describe goskagit.com
Evolve recently expanded its services. Can you tell us more about that? Yes! We’re thrilled to welcome Lilly, our new Master Esthetician, to the Evolve family. With her expertise, we’ve expanded into skincare and beauty services like custom facials, brow laminations, lash lifts, tinting, and waxing. These additions perfectly complement our permanent makeup offerings and give clients even more ways to feel refreshed and renewed.
Your clients often mention how peaceful and welcoming your space feels. What makes Evolve different? Our environment is rooted in kindness, faith, and attention to detail. I want every woman who walks through our door to feel heard, cared for, and at peace. It’s more than a beauty service — it’s an experience of love, faith, and transformation. We pray over our space and clients, and I truly believe that spirit of grace is what people feel when they’re here.
What does it mean to you to be recognized and supported by your community? It means everything. Every
smile, every story, and every vote reminds me why I do what I do — to serve, uplift, and help women feel confidently beautiful. I’m beyond grateful for the love, trust, and support this community continues to show Evolve. It’s
a blessing to share my gift and walk this journey with so many incredible women.

John Piazza Jr. Construction & Remodeling, Inc./NextHome 365 Realty
What do you enjoy most about being a business owner?
The flexibility that comes from running my own business has been invaluable, especially during my years in construction and real estate, as it allowed me to be actively involved in my children’s lives. Now, with my children grown and a grandchild on the way, I am excited to dedicate time to nurturing this next generation. Beyond family, my husband and I have always been committed to giving back to the community where we were raised and where we built our family. Owning a business gives me the opportunity to combine my professional passions with meaningful community impact.
What do you think are the most important qualities for success in business?
Professional success requires a combination of strong skills, unwavering determination, and the courage to share your ideas confidently. Equally important is building a network of supportive peers—especially a community of businesswomen who provide honest, constructive feedback. These relationships help refine your strategies and push you toward achieving your professional goals.
commitment to lifelong learning extends to real estate, where I engage in continuous training and regularly receive industry updates from my firm. Staying informed allows me to maintain a holistic understanding of both markets and better serve my clients and community.
How do you stay up to date with the latest trends and developments in your industry?
Entrepreneurship requires a clear vision of your goals, resilience, and the ability to handle rejection without losing momentum. Hearing “no” should never be a setback—it should be a springboard for creative problem-solving and new opportunities. Adaptability, perseverance, and the confidence to make tough decisions are equally critical for long-term success.
I have maintained my knowledge of construction trends and best practices through active participation on the Skagit-Island Counties Builders Association board for nine years, serving in roles including president, treasurer, and executive board member, along with involvement at the state level. My
What skills or qualities do you believe are essential for an entrepreneur?
How do you engage with the local community and
support local causes?
Community involvement has always been central to my life. I’ve served on the board of my children’s school, participated in the Children’s Hospital Guild, and proudly contributed to both the Burlington and Mount Vernon Chambers of Commerce. I was a founding member of the Burlington Mid-Day Rotary Club and continue to serve on the boards of SICBA (Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association), BIAW (Building Industry Association of Washington), and the Sedro-Woolley Alumni Association. Additionally, I co-founded the One Community One Family cancer charity and currently serve on the board of the Skagit Regional Health Foundation. I am a strong supporter of local schools—including SedroWoolley, Burlington, and Mount Vernon High Schools—as well
as youth sports programs and community theater. Giving back to the community isn’t just something I do; it’s a core part of who I am and reflects the values I hope to pass on to future generations. Hansen’s Furniture
How do you engage with the local community and support local causes?
I’ve always believed in giving back to the community that raised me. I was born and raised here, and my family has deep roots in the valley, so supporting local causes comes naturally. I’m a big animal advocate and proudly support organizations like NOAH, the Humane Society, the YMCA, the Boys & Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity, and local schools when they need auction items. Most recently, we’ve also supported Hospice. This community has given so much to me and to Hansen’s Furniture, and I’m grateful for every opportunity to give back.
How do you stay motivated and innovative in a competitive market? For me, motivation comes from purpose and passion. I truly love
goskagit.com
what I do, and that keeps me driven every day. The furniture industry is always changing—it’s exciting to see new trends, styles, and designs emerge. Much like fashion, manufacturers are constantly pushing the limits of what’s possible, and that creativity inspires me to stay current and keep challenging myself.
How do you handle customer feedback or complaints? Head-on. I genuinely appreciate customer feedback because it helps me understand what people are looking for. I take that input into consideration when buying new furniture and updating our selection. When a complaint comes in, we address it directly and find a solution. We’re local, we’re here, and we take pride in resolving any issue personally and promptly.
What strategies do you use to attract and retain customers?
Hansen’s Furniture has been part of this valley since 1947, and we’re proud to serve generations of loyal customers. Our strategy is simple: offer quality products and exceptional service every time. Many of our pieces are made in the U.S.A., and we’re known for selling real wood furniture built to last. That reputation for quality and integrity is something I’m proud to uphold.
What do you enjoy most about being a business owner? Being your own boss definitely has its highs and lows—you wear all the hats, and every day brings new challenges. But that’s part of what I love about it. No two days are ever the same. At the end of the day,
being a business owner allows me to give back to my community, and that’s what means the most to me.

PAVÉ Jewelry & Design
What inspired you to start your own business?
I started working in my parents’ jewelry store when I was just 12 years old—wrapping gifts, cleaning display cases, and learning the basics of the trade. Over the years, that early exposure grew into a deep passion for craftsmanship, customer relationships, and the beauty of fine jewelry. When my dad passed away, I took the reins, rebranded the business, and opened my own shop. Today, I’m incredibly proud to have my 12-year-old daughter working alongside me and my mom. Having three generations of women continuing this legacy together is truly special—it’s come full circle. Balancing work and family life can be challenging, especially when managing a growing business, kids’ practices, school events, and everything in between. I often joke that my business is like my third
child because it’s growing right alongside my family. Still, no matter how busy things get, family always comes first—no exceptions.
What are some of the biggest mistakes you’ve made in your business, and what did you learn from them? One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of asking for help. I’ve always been comfortable asking questions when I don’t understand something— there’s always a way to find the answer. But when it comes to achieving a healthy work-life balance, I’ve often tried to handle everything on my own. Over time, I’ve realized that I can’t do it all, and that’s okay. Learning to lean on others, delegate, and accept support has been an ongoing process, and I remind myself that I’m a work in
progress—just like everyone else.
What is the most rewarding aspect of running your business? There’s nothing quite like seeing the joy on a customer’s face when I hand them a restored family heirloom or present a bride with her dream engagement ring. The tears, laughter, and sparkle in their eyes are what make it all worth it. Those moments of pure happiness remind me why I love what I do— helping people celebrate life’s most meaningful milestones through jewelry that tells their story.
What do you enjoy most about being a business owner? One of my favorite quotes comes from A League of Their Own: “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The
hard is what makes it great.” That quote perfectly sums up the entrepreneurial journey. Owning a business is full of challenges, but it’s those very challenges that make the rewards so meaningful. The hard work, late nights, and lessons learned along the way make every success that much sweeter.

Box of Good
Can you provide a brief overview of your business and the products/services you offer?
Box of Good is a local and organic produce and grocery delivery company. We source products from local farms, dairies, butchers, growers, and producers, customizing each order to meet customer preferences. Deliveries are made directly to customers’ doors on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Through this model, we ensure that local food reaches local homes— supporting both the health and economy of our community.
What is the most rewarding aspect of running your business? Working with local small businesses and seeing them grow through the connections we help create is incredibly rewarding. Equally
fulfilling is witnessing the joy our community feels when supporting local producers. We love highlighting the wide variety of local farmers and artisans in our area, and we truly value the trust our customers place in us to deliver fresh, healthy food to their families. That trust and connection are what keep us going.
How do you ensure the quality of your products/ services? Food quality is at the heart of everything we do. By sourcing from small and mid-sized local producers, we can ensure exceptional freshness and quality from farm to doorstep. We’ve developed a streamlined system that minimizes time from harvest to delivery—customers often receive produce just a day after it’s picked, milk the day after it’s bottled, and bread the same day it’s baked.
Could you walk me through the process of how a product/service is created or delivered? Most of our orders are placed online, though some customers prefer to call in their requests. We offer pre-set boxes, where customers choose the type of products they’d like (such as fruits or vegetables), and we fill them with what’s in season. Customers also have the option to fully customize their box—selecting from a variety of locally and organically sourced items such as produce, dairy, eggs, meat, and grocery staples.
What role does technology play in your business operations? Our custom-built ordering and delivery software is essential to our operations. Managing fresh food requires precision and speed,
and our technology allows us to coordinate ordering, mapping, and delivery efficiently. Through our system, we create weekly menus, feature new products, host an online ordering portal, and integrate daily and weekly home deliveries. Because fresh food is so dynamic, our in-house software allows for real-time updates—accommodating last-minute supplier changes,
product availability, and customer orders. This flexibility keeps our service responsive and reliable. Box of Good 8504 Cedarhome Dr, Stanwood, WA 98292 (360) 652-4663 boxofgood.com/

Apothecary Spa
What inspired you to start your own business, and how has that inspiration evolved over time?
I’ve always been drawn to creating spaces that make people feel cared for. When I first opened The Apothecary Spa, I wanted to build a haven for relaxation and healing—something both luxurious and grounded. Over time, that inspiration has evolved into a broader purpose: helping others in the wellness industry grow as well. Three years ago, I received my Instructor’s License, which opened the door for me to teach, mentor, and consult with new spa owners. I now get to share lessons I’ve learned about leadership, creativity, and balance. My “why” has shifted from building one successful business to helping others build theirs.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a woman in business, and how did you overcome them?
Early on, I struggled to be taken seriously—especially when negotiating leases, managing contractors, or securing financing. The wellness industry can sometimes be dismissed as “soft,” and as a woman leading multiple companies, I had to develop a strong voice without losing empathy. I learned that preparation is power. When you walk into a meeting with data, vision, and confidence, people listen. Over the years, I’ve turned those early challenges into fuel for mentoring other women to lead with both heart and authority.
What motivates you to keep going when things get tough?
The people—my team, our clients, our community, and my students— are what keep me going. I’ve built my businesses around helping others feel better, whether that’s through a facial, a cup of tea, or a meaningful conversation about goals. When challenges arise—staffing shortages, supply issues, or long days—I remind myself that what we do genuinely improves lives. That connection to purpose makes it easy to show up again the next morning.
goskagit.com
How do you balance work and family life, especially while managing multiple businesses?
Balance is less about perfection and more about rhythm. I’ve learned to give my full attention to whichever role I’m in at the moment—whether that’s CEO, teacher, mom, or friend. I also delegate and trust the people I’ve trained to handle things in my absence. My family understands that entrepreneurship is a lifestyle, not a 9–5 job, but they also know that when I’m home, I’m fully present. The key is setting boundaries, practicing kindness and compassion, and maintaining a sense of humor.
What are the core values that drive your business decisions?
Integrity, education, and community. Every decision I make runs through those filters. Integrity means doing what’s right, even when it’s not easy. Education keeps us sharp, relevant, and capable of serving our clients well. And community reminds me that success isn’t individual—it’s shared. My businesses thrive because of the people behind them and the communities that support them.
What do you see as the future of your industry? Wellness is evolving from luxury to lifestyle. Guests are seeking deeper, more holistic experiences that combine relaxation with real results—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Technology will continue to streamline booking and service tracking, but the human touch will always be the most important factor. I believe we’ll also see more collaboration between spas, healthcare, and hospitality. Consulting on new spa projects has shown me how powerful that integration can be when done with intention.
How do you maintain a positive company culture within your business? Culture starts with clarity. I set clear expectations, celebrate wins, and encourage open
communication. My leadership style is transparent—I share our goals, numbers, and challenges so everyone understands where we’re headed. We also make time for laughter and connection. Our team meetings often include education and small celebrations. A strong culture doesn’t happen by accident; it’s built day by day through mutual respect and shared purpose.
What advice would you give to other women who want to start their own businesses?
Start with a plan, not perfection. Your business will evolve, but you need a roadmap to guide you through the process. Invest in education—take classes, find mentors, and learn from others’ mistakes. Be patient; success takes time. And don’t try to do it all alone. Surround yourself with people who are
smarter than you in different areas. Most importantly, remember why you started. That “why” will carry you through every challenge.
Are there any new products, services, or expansions on the horizon?
Yes! We’re always keeping the spa’s services fresh and innovative. We’re currently transforming our old float pod room into a new “coming soon” service launch. My spa school, Wild Vitality, has grown into a full educational hub for estheticians and spa professionals. We’re expanding our certification programs and adding new business coaching services to help practitioners start and sustain their own ventures. I’m also consulting with spa developers, helping shape treatment design and guest experience from the ground up. It’s incredibly rewarding to see my
work influencing new wellness destinations.
What do you enjoy most about being a business owner?
The freedom to create—and the responsibility that comes with it. I love transforming ideas into experiences that positively impact people’s lives. Whether it’s designing a treatment, mentoring a student, or building a new retail line, I get to blend creativity with purpose. Every day is different, and every challenge is an opportunity to grow. That’s what keeps it exciting, even after all these years. — Anna Holm, Owner of The Apothecary Spa, Wild Valley Apothecary, and Wild Vitality Websites: www.theapothecaryspa.com www.wildvalleyapothecary.com www.wildvalleyvitality.com

To further strengthen our impact, we established the Burlington Chamber Foundation, dedicated to workforce education and fundraising initiatives that prepare a skilled workforce for the future. In partnership with the City of Burlington, the Lodging Tax Committee, and other local collaborators, we manage and enhance the Burlington Visitor Information Center—welcoming travelers and showcasing the amenities, attractions, and events that make Burlington a vibrant destination. One of our proudest achievements is Berry Dairy Days, which will celebrate its 89th year in 2026. This beloved, three-day community festival honors Burlington’s rich agricultural heritage and attracts more than 20,000 attendees each year. Supported by local businesses,
volunteers, and lodging tax funds, the event features a Grand Parade, Vendor Fair, Smoke & Grill competition, and many familyfriendly activities. It’s a joyful celebration of community pride and connection. Learn more at www. berrydairydays.com. The Hair Republic
Hair Republic is a mother-anddaughter–owned salon, owned and operated by Lorena Lara and Leila Crume-Lara. Our Mission Statement:
We believe that beauty connects us, and we see beauty in every face. Everything we do and everything we create is rooted in our belief that you matter to us. Helping others look and feel beautiful is wonderful—but helping them believe in their own beauty is life-changing. Beauty isn’t just our creation; it’s our passion.
Can you provide a brief overview of your business and the products/services you offer? We are a small, independent salon offering a full range of beauty services for the entire family, specializing in all hair types and textures. Our services include
haircuts, specialty hairstyling for weddings and Quinceañeras, and chemical treatments such as customized hair coloring and permanent waving. We also provide facials, spray tanning, waxing, lash extensions, and tanning services. We operate by appointment only to ensure each client receives full, undivided attention.
What is the most rewarding aspect of running your business? For me, the most rewarding part is helping other women succeed—not just in the beauty industry, but in life. I’m deeply passionate about giving back to the community and mentoring women to help them reach their goals. This past year, my first apprentice, Leila, graduated from her program and successfully passed her exams. We’ve also grown our team to
include Savannah, who specializes in makeup, and Cristal, who manages our social media and advertising. They each answered one of the questions below. It has been incredible to support them and watch them grow and thrive. — Lorena Lara
What inspired you to become an entrepreneur and start your own business? I wanted to become an entrepreneur for a few reasons, but mainly because I’ve always been passionate about the beauty industry—whether it’s hair, makeup, or eyelashes. As a young girl, I would spend hours every day watching YouTube videos, learning what to do (and what not to do). I’ve always been intrigued and inspired by the craft, and now that I have my own opportunity, I couldn’t be more grateful! — Savannah Walsh
What challenges do you face as a woman in business?
events and talent. I enjoy capturing those perfect moments that tell a story. Behind the lens, I bring a certain charisma that helps people feel comfortable and truly shine.
One of the biggest challenges is navigating the expectations versus the reality of professionalism and independence. Sometimes, the standards can be too low—or too high—depending on the person or situation.
Through my photos, I aim to capture feelings people can hold onto forever, then share them across social media platforms like Facebook Groups and Instagram Stories—spaces where our community can connect and celebrate together. It’s a fun and creative way to collaborate, spread positivity, and gain recognition locally. — Cristal Falcon
As a woman starting my business, I really enjoy setting personalized standards for each client, learning what they want and expect from their service, and finding ways to exceed those expectations and surprise them. — Leila Crume
