With 18 years of experience in the design industry, Samira has built a space that reflects her passion for helping others create homes that feel both inspired and personal.

1. What inspired you to start your own business?

I’ve always been passionate about creating spaces that feel both beautiful and personal. Interior design has been a natural extension of that passion, and over time I realized there was a real need for accessible, well-curated homegoods that help people express their style. Starting my own business allowed me to bring that vision to life — blending creativity

with function, and offering clients not just design services but also products that make a house feel like a home. It was about doing meaningful work on my own terms and building something that reflects my values around comfort, quality, and intentional living.

2. What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a woman in business?

As a woman entrepreneur, one of my biggest challenges has been finding balance — between running a business, building relationships, and staying creative. Those challenges have also shaped the heart of NEST. They’ve taught me that resilience, community, and a love for what you do can turn obstacles into growth.

3. What do you think are the most important qualities for success in business?

Integrity. For me, success in business starts with integrity. It guides every

decision, every relationship, and every challenge. When you build your business on honesty and respect, you create something far stronger than profits — you build a reputation that endures.

4. How do you balance work and family life?

Balancing work and family is never perfect — it’s about finding what works in each season. Some days the business needs more of me, and other days family comes

C.W. Barbershop:

For more than 21 years, Kelsey Schmidt, owner of C.W. Barbershop in Ellensburg, has been helping her clients look and feel their best. Specializing in men’s haircuts, the shop has become a local institution known for its professional service, friendly atmosphere, and deep community roots.

“I first came to the shop after completing beauty school,” Kelsey shared. “I worked for several years building a clientele and gaining experience. I soon realized that cutting men’s hair was definitely the direction I wanted to continue moving forward with. When the previous owner retired, it was a natural transition for me to take over. I loved my job, and it was a great location.”

Kelsey officially took ownership of the shop on May 2, 2007, and over the years, she’s built a loyal following. Averaging more than 300 haircuts per week, C.W. Barbershop serves everyone from babies

getting their first trim to longtime locals, students, and “old timers” who’ve been coming in for decades. The location itself carries a rich history — a barbershop has occupied the space since at least the 1970s.

“Over the years, I’ve had a variety of other barbers join my team who also give great, professional haircuts,” Kelsey said. “We all work together to take care of our clients.”

For Kelsey, the personal connections are what make the job special. “Getting to know my customers is very rewarding — hearing their stories of times gone by, current events, and the joys and sorrows of life,” she said. “Barbers make great listeners; our customers are like family. We share in their lives.”

When the pandemic hit, the shop faced one of its biggest challenges. “We had to close for 10 weeks during Covid,” Kelsey recalled. “That was tough — cutting hair is our livelihood. But through reopening

and regaining our footing, we switched to a same-day online waitlist. Before, we were walk-ins only, and people sometimes had to wait hours. Now, clients can join the list from anywhere and we text them when it’s their turn. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise — it helped us better serve our clients and respect their busy schedules.”

Balancing her business and personal life is something Kelsey takes seriously. “My husband and I both have busy schedules, but we’re almost always together for breakfast and dinner,” she said. “It’s about time management and setting aside hours for each other on weekends. We also have

a couple of ‘fur babies’ at home that keep things lively. Both of our families live locally and often stop by the barbershop to hang out and chat.”

Kelsey’s love for her community runs deep. Over the years, C.W. Barbershop has sponsored youth sports teams, donated haircuts to local auctions, and supported the Kittitas County Fair Livestock Market Sale, where Kelsey buys an animal each year. “I was heavily involved in 4-H as a kid,” she said. “I really appreciate the hard work, time, and dedication those kids put in. The qualities 4-H teaches — communication, hard work, respect, time management, and record keeping — are things we all can value.”

Recognized as “Best of Kittitas County” for 16 years running, C.W. Barbershop continues to thrive thanks to the loyalty of its customers and the care of its dedicated team.

For Kayla, leadership has never been about titles or gender. “The biggest challenge isn’t being a woman in business—it’s leading in a world that’s constantly evolving,” she says. Her focus is on staying ahead, building a strong team, and creating something meaningful. “Good leadership speaks for itself, no matter who’s at the helm.”

Balancing work and family, she admits, is an ongoing practice. “I try to be fully present wherever I am—whether that’s at work or with my family. It’s about priorities and giving myself grace when things don’t go as planned.”

At Hearthstone, Kayla oversees a community designed to support older adults through every stage of aging. “We offer more than just a place to live,” she explains. “It’s about providing safety, comfort, connection, and, when needed, assistance with daily life—so residents can maintain dignity and independence.”

What sets Hearthstone apart, she believes, is the trust built with families.

“Senior living is deeply personal. Families are placing their loved ones in our care, and we don’t take that lightly.”

Integrity, communication, and resilience guide her approach. Just as important, she says, is investing in people. “A business is only as strong as the team behind it. When you lead with trust and accountability, you create a culture where people thrive.”

Two local designers, Stephanie of Rumble Interiors and Renee of D. Marie Interiors share their insights on working together, empowering women in design, and helping clients create beautiful, functional spaces that reflect their unique style.

Why is it important to work with other women in your profession?

STEPHANIE : Working with other women in the interior design industry fosters a sense of trust and mutual understanding. When women support

each other, it creates an environment where ideas and opinions can be freely shared and genuinely heard. This open communication leads to stronger collaborations and more authentic, creative results. Additionally, working together helps build confidence and empowers women to succeed collectively—strengthening our profession and making our voices more influential in the community.

RENEE : Women have always motivated and inspired one another, and I believe there is power in collaboration rather than competition. We often face similar challenges in our line of work, and it’s incredibly beneficial to share both the good and the bad experiences— it provides support and problemsolving opportunities. It also creates

wonderful networking connections for both suppliers and subcontractors.

Can you provide an overview of the services you offer?

RENEE : D. Marie Interiors specializes in kitchen and bathroom remodels, as well as professional wallpaper installation. We also offer sales and installation of all interior products, including flooring, furniture, and blinds. As a licensed contractor, I have the knowledge and ability to assist with every aspect of a project. We also work closely with a talented group of subcontractors and skilled tradesmen and women on a daily basis.

How can interior designers assist homeowners in staying within their budget while achieving their desired aesthetic?

STEPHANIE : Interior designers help homeowners maximize their budget by prioritizing key elements, sourcing cost-effective materials, and suggesting creative solutions that achieve the desired look without overspending. We also leverage our relationships with suppliers to find the best deals and ensure every dollar is spent efficiently. Ultimately, our goal is to create a cohesive, beautiful space that reflects the homeowner’s style while respecting their financial boundaries.

RENEE : As part of a broad trade and wholesale network, we have access to high-quality materials that we can provide to consumers at comparable or even lower cost. Also, as a small business with lower overhead, we can be more competitive than large box stores and our product knowledge and experience helps us source items that allow clients to stay on budget while achieving their desired look. Essentially, the expertise of a designer can help homeowners achieve highend style for less.

What expertise do interior designers provide in selecting materials, colors, and furnishings?

STEPHANIE : Interior designers bring a trained eye and years of experience to help clients navigate countless options. We understand how different materials perform, their durability, and their compatibility with various aesthetics. We expertly select colors that enhance natural light and create the desired mood,

and choose furnishings that are both functional and stylish. Our expertise ensures every element works together harmoniously to create a space that’s both beautiful and practical.

RENEE : We have access to an extensive range of trade-only products that aren’t available to consumers. These items are often higher quality and more affordable than retail options found at big box stores. With years of experience in color selection and product functionality, we’re wellequipped to help clients choose the right materials and finishes for their lifestyle.

How do you see your business contributing to the growth and development of the local economy?

STEPHANIE : Our interior design businesses support the local economy by collaborating with local artisans, suppliers, and contractors. We contribute to job creation and help boost other small businesses through our projects. Additionally,

beautifully designed spaces attract new residents and businesses to Ellensburg, enhancing property values and making the community more vibrant and inviting. In this way, our work not only transforms interiors but also helps foster economic growth and community development.

RENEE : Personally, I love having a business in Downtown Ellensburg. As a designer and art enthusiast, I’ve volunteered with the Ellensburg Downtown Association to help bring more art into our downtown spaces. It’s been proven that art in streets and alleyways creates a welcoming atmosphere for visitors, drawing people into our downtown and helping drive the local economy.

How Mackenzie Cohen turned her love of coffee and people into a HOMETOWN GATHERING PLACE

After more than a decade in the coffee and restaurant industry, Mackenzie Cohen couldn’t imagine doing anything else. Her love for people, food, and coffee led her to open Kittitas Café, a cozy, community-based coffee shop that quickly became one of Kittitas’s favorite gathering spots.

From day one, Mackenzie set out to create a welcoming space where everyone feels like a regular. The café offers an approachable take on highend coffee, along with gourmet sauces, pastries, breakfast, and lunch—all made with care. Every summer, the café also hosts a free backyard concert series, bringing locals together for music and

connection in true small-town spirit.

The road to business ownership wasn’t without challenges. As a young woman entrepreneur, Mackenzie noticed that some people were surprised to learn she was the owner.

“When I co-owned the business with a male partner, some vendors would go straight to him instead of me,” she recalls. “It was frustrating, but it pushed me to stand more confidently in my role.” Now the sole owner, she leads with integrity, passion, and a focus on community.

Finding balance took time, too.

“There wasn’t really a balance in the beginning,” Mackenzie admits with a laugh. “But once I

learned to accept help and trust my team, everything changed.”

With two dedicated managers and a supportive crew, she’s found a rhythm that allows her to thrive in both business and family life.

For Mackenzie, the heart of Kittitas Café is connection— between her team, customers, and community. “The relationships make it all worth it,” she says. “Having my family involved and getting to share this experience with them has been incredible.”

That commitment extends beyond the café’s doors. Mackenzie and her team support local causes, hire Kittitas residents, and collaborate with nearby businesses. “We’re one of the few businesses in Kittitas,

so I feel a real responsibility to keep investing in our town and helping it grow,” she says. “We want to see our whole community thrive.”

For Darby Grimes, Director of Events and Programs, every event is a platform for progress. She leads several of the Chamber’s cornerstone initiatives, including Leadership Kittitas County, a professional development program cultivating the next generation of community leaders, and the Enterprise Challenge, a business plan competition that helps local entrepreneurs bring their ideas to life.

Grimes also oversees some of the county’s most beloved community gatherings, including Bite of the ‘Burg, a vibrant celebration that welcomes Central Washington University students back to Ellensburg each fall. Behind the scenes, Sheree Peda, Finance Support Clerk, maintains the structure that keeps the Chamber’s wide range of programs running smoothly. Her attention to detail ensures accountability and sustainability across every project.

And at the front desk, Vickie Scribner, Visitor Information Specialist, welcomes guests with warmth and local knowledge. Whether guiding a traveler to their next stop or recommending a hidden gem, she embodies the hospitality that defines Kittitas County.

Rooted in Renewal: Dawn Ambrose Brings Healing Through Nature

After more than 30 years in the technology field, Dawn Ambrose, founder of Woodland Findings in Ellensburg, decided it was time for a new chapter—one rooted in growth, mindfulness, and connection with the natural world. Inspired by a desire to bring the outdoors to others, Dawn created Woodland Findings as a space for people to slow down, breathe deeply, and rediscover the restorative power of nature.

Her journey began when she discovered Shinrin-Yoku, the Japanese practice of forest bathing—mindfully immersing oneself in the forest atmosphere through all five senses. Captivated by its proven mental and physical health benefits, Dawn pursued certification as a Certified Forest Therapy Guide. “It’s not about swimming in the forest,” she explains with a smile. “It’s about being fully present in nature— listening, breathing, noticing. I truly have the best office in the world.”

Today, Woodland Findings offers guided forest bathing experiences, both group and private, that invite participants to unplug from technology and reconnect with themselves and the environment. These gentle walks typically last 1.5 to 2 hours and cover less than a quarter mile, emphasizing awareness over activity. Dawn also hosts daylong retreats focused on women’s health and wellness, as well as art and craft workshops for children and adults. Each event is designed to foster creativity, relaxation, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

For Dawn, the most rewarding part of running Woodland Findings is the people she meets along the way. “Not everyone grows up surrounded by forests,” she shares. “Some people have never stepped off a trail or felt safe in nature. Watching them experience that sense of wonder and peace for the first time—it’s truly magical.”

Beyond individual healing, Woodland Findings also plays a role in strengthening the local community. Dawn collaborates with area artists, health and wellness practitioners, and local restaurants to create enriching experiences that support both people and places. “Collaboration is key,” she says. “We’re all working together to provide

opportunities for people to fall in love with nature—and when they do, they help protect it.”

With each mindful walk and

creative workshop, Woodland Findings continues to nurture wellness, connection, and community—one peaceful moment at a time.
