About St. Joseph’s Catholic School Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1872, St. Joseph’s Catholic School serves approximately 200 students across grades 2K–5th in the Middle Georgia city of Macon. St. Joseph’s is dedicated to educating, nurturing, and encouraging the whole child through Gospel values. The school combines academic rigor with robust service opportunities, vibrant Catholic traditions, and intentional character development that shapes students into faithful, compassionate leaders.

Our desire at St. Joseph’s Catholic School is to form young men and women to carry the light of Jesus Christ into a world that desperately needs it, each according to the unique gifts God has given them. What a blessing it is to pastor our school and spend time with our students. In a very special way, worshipping with our students in School Mass is an incredible demonstration of the Holy Spirit alive in our community. Our faith in Jesus Christ is alive and strong at SJS.
This year our faculty and staff championed our mission beautifully, investing faith, hope, and love into every student. Our students lifted our faith—and our academics—out of the church and classroom and into the Macon community. Our Eucharistic Procession was a beautiful experience, literally bringing Jesus Christ into Macon’s streets and onto our school campus. Our downtown student art exhibit brought the spirit of St. Joseph’s into the heart of our city, reflecting our students’ talents and the many ways God is calling them to serve His Church and the world. What an incredible year at St. Joseph’s Catholic School! I am amazed every day at the gifts and abilities of our students. Beginning with our youngest Preschoolers and continuing on to our Mount de Sales-bound 5th Graders, our students have a unique ability to combine faith, curiosity, and imagination with academic rigor to achieve success in and outside the classroom. What we’re doing here at St. Joseph’s is truly special!
The word is out about St. Joseph’s. We welcomed an incredible number of new families in 2025-2026, and we continue to receive growing interest from parents who seek a faith-based education for their child. From families who live and work in downtown Macon to those traveling from across our surrounding 10 counties, more and more are choosing St. Joseph’s. Enriching Our Catholic Identity Living out our faith in Jesus Christ is at the heart of how we educate. Despite the fact that only 3% of Middle Georgia’s population identifies as Catholic, Catholic students made up the majority of enrollment during the 2025–2026 school year—a testament to the strength of our Catholic identity and the trust families place in our mission. We remain committed to finding new ways to integrate Catholic curriculum and spiritual formation throughout an SJS education. We are especially focused on deepening our implementation of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd methodology and expanding opportunities for liturgical living. Through feast day celebrations, Advent and Lenten traditions, prayer experiences, and a continued focus on the beauty of the Church’s traditions, we weave the faith into every aspect of our school days.

Enriching Our Catholic Identity Our school year is filled with unique opportunities to live out our faith. Our very first Eucharistic Procession from the church to the school courtyard created a powerful opportunity for our entire community to witness and honor the Real Presence of Christ in downtown Macon. In the spring, our First Holy Communicants participated in two offsite retreats focused on the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion, helping them better prepare their hearts to receive Jesus. Each January, our entire school unites in prayer for a New Year’s Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This shared devotion is one expression of the vibrant spiritual life we cultivate at St. Joseph’s. Our priests maintain a strong presence in the daily lives of our students, visiting the lunchroom and playground to socialize, encourage, and play with them. Families comment on the active presence of our clergy, who help our students see the joy and beauty of a life lived for Christ. This commitment to making the faith tangible in the everyday lives of our students also shapes our vision for their education. Principal Sills and Fr. Johnson continue to explore a more traditional approach to Catholic education, identifying and implementing meaningful paths to renew and reclaim the Church’s rich legacy of forming students in faith, wisdom, excellence, and virtue.

Meet the Anderson Family One family’s testimony to an SJS education School Mass is the highlight of my week. Worshipping Jesus as a school community and seeing our children grow in faith, hope, and love is why I’m beyond thankful for Catholic education. We choose St. Joseph’s for our boys because our number one goal is to get our children to heaven, and we believe that the integration of faith and education is the best way to do that. We believe in giving our children an environment where God can be talked about and where faith is not just something reserved for Sunday Mass. It’s a sacrifice, but it’s worth it. We are new to Macon. What is really special about St. Joseph’s is how faith is a normal part of everyday life. We love that the priests are playing soccer with the children, normalizing a vocation to the priesthood, and showing them what it means to love Jesus and others.

Meet the Anderson Family One family’s testimony to an SJS education Our family is different because of SJS. Our children learn here that truth is beauty and beauty is truth. When they come home from school, they teach us about our faith. What our children bring home and what we are able to join in together, from school Rosary to learning about novenas and feast days, deepens our prayer life.

We are grateful for the village at St. Joseph’s, from the Home and School Association welcoming us when Matthew was born, to Mr. Sills helping at morning drop-off, to Mrs. Somers supporting our preschoolers, to everyone in between. We choose to financially support St. Joseph’s because we believe in the mission of Catholic education. We want this to be here for our children and our children’s children, and we want to help other families who face financial barriers to attending.

Growing Our Student Body We are pleased to report a resurgence in enrollment this year that outpaced our projections. We enrolled a record 77 new students in 2025–2026. Overall, enrollment increased by nearly 11%—an encouraging sign of our school’s continued momentum. This growth exceeded our anticipated pace and affirmed the strong demand for a St. Joseph’s education. This continued growth reflects the strength of our academic programs, the dedication of our faculty and staff, and the trust families place in our mission to provide a Christ-centered education. As our student body grows, we remain committed to fostering an environment where students are challenged academically, personally known, and encouraged in their spiritual development.

A Look at Student Achievement Students demonstrated meaningful academic growth and achievement during the 2025–2026 school year. Academic accelerators, namely the Student Success Center and Challenge Program, contribute greatly to our accomplishments. Principal Sills says that this year’s remarkable growth and achievement across all grade levels is a feat unlike any he has witnessed at any other school over his 40-year career as an administrator. Results from the NWEA/MAP assessment reflect this strong progress. Across test scores in Reading, Mathematics, and Language, our students showed strong, above-average growth, frequently exceeding national norms. These results represent the hard work of our students, the dedication of our faculty, and the continued partnership between our school and families.
We believe in educating the whole child academically, spiritually, socially, emotionally, and creatively. Throughout the year, students demonstrated growth through classroom performance, collaborative learning experiences, leadership opportunities, faith formation, service projects, problem-solving tasks, public speaking, creativity, perseverance, and increased confidence as learners. We educate students through academic rigor while also forming hearts of faith. Our graduates leave St. Joseph’s prepared for middle school not only academically, but also socially and spiritually. They carry with them the confidence, character, and strong moral foundation needed to thrive in the next stage of their lives.
At St. Joseph’s, however, student growth is measured by far more than standardized test scores alone.

Message from
Our Youngest Donor Rising 5th Grader Skylar Sevcik is our youngest donor this year. Her parents are actively involved at St. Joseph’s as volunteers and donors. When she attended our Gratitude Brunch at the end of the year with her family—where her sister was a student speaker—she heard about the new Debra Harrison Scholarship Fund and decided to take action. For Skylar, giving back is simple: “It’s good to donate money to good causes.” She loves the community at St. Joseph’s, especially her teachers and Challenge Class. When asked why donating to SJS matters, Skylar shared, “Scholarships are good because they cut the price for students—that’s a good cause.” She hopes her gift helps the school she loves so much continue to grow. Skylar’s message to other students is heartfelt:
“ SJS is a really good school, and it’s nice to donate to it. ”
Debra Harrison Scholarship Fund For over three decades, Mrs. Debra Harrison has been a pillar of our community. During her 32 years of service—the past 10 spent as Director of Admissions—she has welcomed thousands of families through our doors across generations, helping each one discover what makes an SJS education so special. Whether preparing for an event, ensuring every detail is just right, or working tirelessly to help families afford Catholic education, she approaches every task with excellence, faith, and a deep love for our community.
This year, we were honored to celebrate her extraordinary service by establishing the Debra Harrison Scholarship Fund. Rather than waiting until retirement, your generosity helped us give welldeserved recognition to Mrs. Harrison now. This endowment honors the profound impact she continues to make each day by providing scholarship assistance to future generations of St. Joseph's students. The fund was launched with an inspiring show of support from our faculty and staff. Every gift made during the launch benefited the scholarship endowment, ensuring Mrs. Harrison's legacy will continue to open the doors of St. Joseph's for generations to come.

The Highlight of the Week at SJS
Each Thursday, our school community gathers to worship the Lord, with student altar servers, choir members, readers, prayer buddies bringing the gifts to the altar, student Mass intentions for community members, and parents joining us in worship. The sight of students learning to participate fully in the life of the Church—worshiping alongside their teachers, families, and priests—offers a beautiful expression of the faith that unites our community. Together, these elements of the Mass create a moving and reverent celebration of the Eucharist. These liturgies are among the most meaningful for many in our community, offering a moment for us all to take a sacred pause together in the middle of the busy week. “There is something really special that takes place during our school Masses. You truly have to experience it to understand it,” shared SJS mother Tracy DeWalt.

Our pastors deliver energizing Thursday homilies focused on inspiring confidence and trust in our students, assuring them of God’s enduring love. Another mother, Brigid Rolfes, shared that she loves how focused the Mass is on the children: “The homily is directed to them, and the priests interact with the kids, keeping them engaged in God’s Word.” Through these weekly encounters, the truths of the faith become personal for every member of our community. Our student choir also helps lift our community’s hearts in worship, and has been known to move parishioners to tears. Mrs. DeWalt shared that the choir’s participation is “such a beautiful witness to what Catholic education is all about.” Music Director Pamela White shared the perspective of a faculty member, stating with pride that the students genuinely want to glorify God with their voices—“their joy in singing is what makes the music so meaningful.” 14

Breaking Bread: Nutrition at SJS Led by our Chopped champion and 2025 Georgia Grown Executive Chef of the Year Chelsia Ogletree, our nutrition program integrates learning into every delicious, nourishing meal. Our chef-led weekly themes expose children to different textures and flavors, diversifying their palates and teaching them how food reflects the history and traditions of people around the world. This year, our menus featured meals from 23 different countries and cultures. We continue to strengthen our culture of community through shared meals and thoughtful nutrition initiatives. We also began offering our Easter and Thanksgiving meals free of charge to all students and teachers, reinforcing our commitment to ensuring that community events are for everyone. Through these efforts, we hope to create moments of connection, generosity, and belonging around our shared table, with delicious meals at the center.

After-School activities
We have seen record student participation in our after-school programming, with 350 registrations across our wide variety of offerings— an encouraging sign that many students are enrolling in multiple activities. This breadth of extracurricular activities helps us develop well-rounded students, and all activities remain free thanks to the generous support of our Community Partners. Diversifying our extracurricular offerings remains a priority to appeal to a variety of student interests. This year, we launched three unique programs that engaged students in new ways: Creation Keepers, a gardening club; Knights in Motion, a functional fitness club; and a personal finance course for 4th and 5th Graders led by MDS students and President Brendan O’Kane. Our 10 additional activities include pickleball, advanced art, cheerleading, FIRST LEGO League Robotics, chess, and Kiwanis K-Kids service club, among others. All sports clubs are part of our athletics program, which functions as a “learning league,” helping every player cultivate knowledge of the game, sportsmanship, and confidence. Challenge Program The Challenge Program is a student success accelerator, helping students ready for greater academic rigor deepen their learning. This year, the program served 31 students—14% of our enrollment—with project-based learning and small group instruction. Students in the Challenge Program participate in scratch coding, a poetry slam, international writing contests, and in-depth coding with CAD/3D design and printing. The Challenge Program co-teaches and offers project-based support across all grade levels, allowing all students a taste of these offerings. It also facilitates the FIRST LEGO League robotics club and competitions.
This year, our FIRST LEGO League Robotics Team competed in regional, super-regional, and state competitions and received national attention in a CNN 10 feature. They won awards for their innovation project and for exemplifying FLL Core Values such as extraordinary sportsmanship and respect for both their own team and competing teams.

Fine Arts Our Fine Arts program gained local attention this year as our Kindergarten–5th Grade ceramics and two-dimensional creations were on display in our first art gallery show in downtown Macon. In partnership with the Wesleyan Leadership Lab, "Pieces of Us" opened in early May with a special evening reception and remained on view throughout the month. Students were introduced to the fundamentals of art curation, considering theme, audience, and storytelling. This authentic, real-world learning experience helped them grow not only as artists but also as thoughtful contributors to the broader creative landscape in Macon. This was a meaningful opportunity for student artwork to be celebrated by our community while intentionally creating an interdisciplinary, studentcentered learning experience.

Fine Arts Rather than simply displaying their work, students were invited to take ownership of the exhibition process and learn directly from Wesleyan educators and curators. They explored how to select, arrange, and present art for an exhibit, while our 5th Graders designed the space and discovered how elements such as lighting, spacing, and layout influence the viewer’s experience. This approach reflects our broader commitment to creating opportunities in which students help shape the experience itself. By placing students at the center of the process, we help them grow as collaborators, problem-solvers, and confident contributors to their community.

Home & School Association Grandparents Day In September 2025, we hosted our beloved annual Grandparents Day with an extraordinary attendance of 340 grandparents. Almost every St. Joseph’s student had at least one grandparent in attendance for this day of crafting and bonding. All students enjoyed a fun morning of activity, including a special guest reader and a panel of SJS grandparents who spoke about their experiences with our school.

Middle School Readiness St. Joseph's provides students with a strong academic and spiritual foundation that prepares them for success in middle school, high school, and beyond. Through our continuum with Mount de Sales Academy, families have the opportunity to continue their children's Catholic education within a shared tradition of Gospel values, academic excellence, and service. Together, St. Joseph's and Mount de Sales Academy provide a continuous pathway of Catholic education, strengthening both our students and the broader Catholic community in Macon by forming young people rooted in faith, wisdom, and virtue. Our 5th Grade graduates leave St. Joseph's well prepared for the opportunities and expectations of middle school. Consistent with past years, every 5th Grade student who applied to Mount de Sales Academy in 2026 was accepted, reflecting the strong academic preparation and character formation they received at St. Joseph's. A rigorous academic program and intentional faith and virtue formation help students develop the confidence, study habits, and critical thinking skills needed for continued success. We are proud to celebrate each graduating class as they take the next step in their educational journey, carrying with them the faith, knowledge, and virtues cultivated during their years at St. Joseph's.

We achieved 100% giving participation among our faculty and staff, including a significant amount of in-kind support recorded through the Advancement Office. Our teachers give their time, talents, resources, and hearts each day in service to our students. Their generosity reflects the love and dedication they bring to forming the next generation of Knights. Many teachers choose to stay at St. Joseph’s until they retire, giving our students the gift of their entire teaching experience. We are extending our gratitude to three retiring teachers this year.

A Lasting Impact:
Reflections from a Beloved Teacher It is truly hard to believe that after 19 years teaching at SJS—and 27 years of teaching in total—I am retiring! It does feel like I just began teaching here a couple of years ago. When I decided in October of this past year that it was time to retire, I did so with some trepidation and sadness. For 19 years, I have loved this school. I loved watching my two daughters, Roxie and Josie, attend SJS. Being at the same school as them was such a blessing. Now, I have been able to watch my granddaughter, Hayzel, walk the same halls as her mother and aunt. This has also been a blessing. My time at SJS has flown by! I have had the opportunity to work with the best of the best in education. I sincerely mean that. I have learned so much about teaching and nurturing from my colleagues past and present. My daughters and granddaughter have been loved and nurtured here, all while receiving a wonderful education. I will take with me lifelong friendships that I treasure. I am planning to sub next year and that will keep me here and a little bit involved. I will miss you all, but it is on to the next chapter of my life. A Community for Everyone This year, we reinforced our commitment to making sure the SJS community experience is for all of us. We made sure our signature family feasts were free for every student to enjoy, and we grew our Sponsorships and Community Partnerships to ensure every club, sport, and activity could be free as well. Crucially, we nearly doubled our scholarship awards, making the St. Joseph’s experience accessible to more families than ever before.
Expanding Our Campus We continue on our path toward expanding our physical footprint in downtown Macon. Creating additional classrooms will allow us to meet growing enrollment demands while strengthening the future of Catholic education in Middle Georgia—from a student’s first day at St. Joseph’s to the graduation stage of Mount de Sales Academy.
