A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO, BEN IRISH Welcome to the February Murdoch Monthly. Welcome to our special 30th anniversary 'Year Book' edition of Murdoch Monthly. I hope you enjoy our stroll down memory lane, as we reflect on some of the key people and events that have shaped our hospital community over the past three decades. I want to start by thanking those of you who gave up time with family and friends to work during the festive season. To everyone else, I hope you enjoyed some rest and feel energised for what’s sure to be a busy year ahead!
To celebrate our 30th, milestone, I invite you to join us for a Mexican lunch in the Caregiver Dining Room (see poster on page 7 for more details). After the lunch, there will be a special ceremony in the Chapel at 2pm to unveil the Aboriginal artwork that many of us contributed to with the help of Aunty Neta Knapp. I encourage everyone who is able to join us to please do so. Murdoch wouldn’t be what it is without you all, thank you to each and every one of you for your continual commitment to the care of our patients.

COVER STORY – MURDOCH CELEBRATES 30 YEARS! In 1989, St John of God Health Care, in conjunction with the Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition and the Sisters of Mercy in Perth, lodged a proposal for new private hospital facilities in the south metropolitan area of Perth. The success of this proposal led to St John of God Health Care undertaking the construction of what is now St John of God Murdoch Hospital. Staff from St Joseph’s Hospital
Bicton and St John of God Rivervale transferred to St John of God Murdoch Hospital in preparation for the opening of the new hospital. Other key staff for the development of the new hospital were recruited and appointed, starting with the founding Chief Executive Officer Bill Shields in 1991.

The site of the new hospital was blessed on 21 September 1991, and the first patients were admitted on 14 February 1994.

Whether a birthday, a milestone in a relationship, a momentous life event, or the death of a loved one, anniversaries are an important part of life. They put a pin in the calendar and remind us of the people, places, and events that matter to us.
I am honoured to have been asked to write this month’s reflection while Jenni takes a well-earned break. As I have been researching Murdoch’s history over the past few months in anticipation of the hospital’s 30th birthday celebrations, I have been reflecting on the significance of anniversaries and the value of celebrating them. Anniversaries are key moments
Acknowledging the anniversary of a hospital or service is just as important. Celebrating St John of God Murdoch Hospital’s 30th anniversary provides a space to pause and reflect on the hospital’s journey. How and why did the hospital start, and what are the key moments that brought us to where we are today? Sharing memories of the hospital’s past 30 years creates community. It also reminds us that no matter how long you have been a caregiver at St John of God Murdoch Hospital, you are a part of its story. Without Murdoch people, the hospital would

be just bricks and mortar and there would be no story to tell. Over the years, there have been notable constants in Murdoch’s history, including our core Values and a strong commitment to staying true to the vision of the Sisters of St John of God and Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition. Other strong themes are innovation, adaptability, vibrancy, responsiveness and community. While remembering the past and telling stories are important at moments like this, it is equally important to look to the future. As caregivers, you can draw on the themes from Murdoch’s past – the hospital’s intangible heritage – to give you energy and focus as you look to the years ahead and your continuing place in Murdoch’s story. So, congratulations on 30 years and all the very best for what is to come.

Peter Kennedy: November 2023 Nominated by a patient
“We recently met Peter during a hospital stay to deliver our 15-week gestation daughter. We were still in shock at that point, only finding out the day before that her heart had stopped. Peter had a very calming presence; chatting with Peter made us both feel very at ease. He was so kind and compassionate and was there to hold space for us during a very difficult time. We had a follow-up with Peter a few weeks later to collect our daughter’s ashes. Once again, he was a very calming presence to the both of us and was so genuine in asking how we were both doing. Although we met Peter under unfortunate circumstances, we feel very grateful to have had him on this journey with us.”
CAREGIVER OF THE MONTH “Belinda recently went above and beyond in her care of a couple who lost their twins with neonatal death. Belinda was culturally sensitive, recognising the need to consult with elders and family before making decisions about burial plans. She liaised with the pastoral care team at King Edward and personally escorted the patient and her husband to King Edward when they transferred ensuring continuity of care and a smooth handover transition. Belinda was thorough in both her procedural and pastoral approach and was a beacon of support in a tumultuous time for this couple. Belinda is a phenomenal pastoral carer, but this example shows the outstanding care she provided in an uncommon situation and I think she deserves to be acknowledged.”

“During a patient review on Thursday, I overheard a family member buzz the door into ICU advising his wife had been transferred, and he wished to come in. Toni quickly discussed with the nursing staff and buzzed him in. She then left her desk, greeted the man as he walked up, linked arm-in-arm with him, and walked him down to the room where his wife was. She then returned to the room a short time later to offer him a warm drink. A lot can be said about human touch, and I just thought the way she linked arms with him, walked side-by-side and left her desk to greet him at the door was so beautiful.”

Looking to the Future! Redevelopment updates As the Hospital looks to the future, we have some key building works that are nearing completion while others are getting started. •
Our expanded and refurbished Endoscopy is slated to be complete in late February.

The new and improved redesign of our Emergency Department is on track for completion mid-year.

Our announcement of Orthonova recently made the news. This
specialist orthopaedic hospital is set to break ground in the second half of this year and has a planned opening date for late-2026. •
Alongside the Orthonova build, we will also expend our surgical capacity for a variety of other specialties. We will build an additional 40-bed ward in the Orthonova building and fit out two additional theatres in our existing hospital.
Dr Donald Latchem’s daughter wins award for the top ATAR score in the state In a remarkable academic achievement, Elena Latchem, daughter of esteemed cardiologist Dr Donald Latchem, won the prestigious Beazley Medal for her top ATAR performance and the subject award for chemistry. Following in her father’s footsteps, Elena aspires to pursue a career in medicine. Dr Latchem said he was proud of his daughter’s outstanding academic achievement. “I was very happy and relieved when Elena won the Beazley Medal, as I knew that she had worked very hard for it,” he said. “There were some tears of joy as well as relief. I should add that she also attained her Duke of Edinburgh Gold during year 12, played violin in the school orchestra, and played sports.”
“She was very disciplined and made many sacrifices to achieve something she had been aiming for since year five!” Dr Latchem said that Elena found she had an interest in science but didn’t seriously consider studying medicine until the start of year 11. She had applied to study at Curtin and the University of Western Australia (UWA) and several universities over east. “After contemplating moving to Melbourne, she has decided to study at UWA as a Fogarty Foundation scholar on the Assured Pathway, which gives her a guaranteed place in a professional postgraduate degree after she has completed her undergraduate,” he said. Congratulations to Elena on this incredible achievement!

OHS UPDATE - FIT TESTING AT MURDOCH To ensure the commitment to the health & safety of all Murdoch caregivers and our patients, the St John of God Health Care Hospital Management Committee has endorsed fit testing as an ongoing requirement for all caregivers providing direct patient care or contact. All caregivers providing direct patient care or contact are required to complete a baseline fit test upon commencing. Caregivers working in an identified highrisk area are also required to complete an annual re-test. Any other caregivers can opt-in to undergo a fit test at their own accord. Caregivers who work in the below areas will require annual fit testing:

DR TESSA BLOM APPOINTED AS HEAD OF EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT St John of God Murdoch Hospital Director of Medicine Dr Andrew Wesseldine said Dr Blom’s dedication and compassion has been evident to all within the Hospital. “Tessa has led our Emergency Department team through a challenging period with great kindness and authenticity,” he said.
Dr Tessa Blom has been appointed as permanent Head of Emergency Medicine for our Emergency Department.
“It is an exciting time, as we look towards future growth within our Emergency Department. We look forward to Tessa and Jessica Hawke, our Nurse Unit Manager - ED, continuing to build on the strong partnership they have formed, as they lead our wonderful team of clinicians and nurses in serving our community.”
Dr Blom has worked in various Emergency Departments across Perth before joining St John of God Murdoch Hospital as an Emergency Physician in 2016.
Dr Blom was born in Perth and grew up in Malaysia, where she received Chinese Education for primary and secondary qualifications.
She has spent the past six months as the Acting Head of Emergency Department.
Following this, she moved to Russia when she was 16 and commenced her medical
training in St Petersburg before moving back to Perth in 2005, after she had completed her internship. Dr Blom said that although she doesn’t get a lot of free time with a four-year-old at home, she has a passion for travel and enjoys reading and eating out. “I feel very privileged that I have had the opportunity to live amongst different cultures and travel to most parts of the world,” she said. “I look forward to continuing to explore the world when the chance arises.” “In the meantime, I really enjoy working at Murdoch – we have a great team here and I’m looking forward to what the future will bring.” Congratulations, Dr Blom!

St John of God Murdoch Hospital Spearheads Health Initiative at Binar Futures Basketball Camp In January we collaborated with Binar Futures and Asthma WA to launch a groundbreaking health initiative, the Binar Health Embassy, at the 2024 Great Southern Basketball Tournament in Albany. The initiative, supported by our Charity of the Year fundraising, aimed to provide health advice and assessments to over 500 Aboriginal youth through interactive learning experiences during basketball clinics. The Health Embassy featured different health stations, and 12 Murdoch caregivers, including junior doctors, nurses, and our CareerTrackers intern, volunteered their time to conduct health checks. The Binar Health Embassy was an outstanding success, and here is some feedback our team received from attendees: “Our mob don’t go to the doctors often enough. Having you here is simply amazing and provides an opportunity we don’t get very much.” “We don’t have a doctor or a medical team in Leonora, and our visiting doctor is hard to book with. Having this opportunity is beyond amazing, and we are incredibly grateful.” “This is so amazing! We try to tell the kids these things, but they actually listen to you. Thank you for doing this.” The vibe was incredible, and all of the Murdoch staff who attended thoroughly enjoyed themselves. “It was a really positive experience. Lots of fun. CDS CORNER This month, we are focusing on diabetes. It is post-Christmas, so most of us have overindulged in sugar and the ‘good stuff’. We are asking for help from our Nurses and Doctors to document clearly in the notes when we have to intervene with our patients with diabetes. As always, we combine education with fun in the CDS world – this focus is no different! We are giving out jellybeans as an incentive to ensure our documentation remains clear, concise, and clinically relevant. Check out your ward’s Facebook pages or the board in the dining room for more information.
Justice of the Peace Did you know St John of God Murdoch has some incredible Justice of the Peace Volunteers accessible to patients? Kathleen, Harry, and Dan! (Endorsed by CEO Ben Irish himself!) All three live locally and can provide prompt and efficient onsite service to our inpatients. Services also extend to caregivers and doctors. However, this does not usually include onsite visits.
The documents most required by the service are Enduring Power of Attorney, Enduring Power of Guardianship, Advanced Health Direct, Certified copies, Wills, Affidavits, Statutory Declarations, and any other legal documents that need officiating. Any enquiries for our JPs can be made via the Switchboard on *99.

Foundation Update The very best care for new bubs and their families, thanks to continued Telethon support St John of God Foundation is thrilled to announce we are a Channel 7 Telethon Trust Beneficiary for 2024. This latest funding will support maternity and paediatric equipment across our WA hospitals. The generous grants from Telethon will make a big difference to babies and their families across our state. Previous funding from Telethon has already been utilised at St John of Murdoch Hospital, with the provision of a baby ventilator for the Special Care Nursery late last year. The state-of-the-art ventilator helps ensure caregivers provide the best care to new babies in our hospital and means caregivers can provide high level oxygen requirements for pre-term babies before transfer, ensuring better long-term outcomes. We are incredibly proud to partner with Telethon and immensely grateful for their ongoing commitment to WA families in St John of God Hospitals.
