Greater access to free community mental health support now available St John of God Social Outreach, part of St John of God Health Care, has opened its fourth free, walk-in mental health service in the Perth metro area, meaning accessing support is easier than ever. Armadale Head to Health was launched in November and joins other Head to Health services in Mirrabooka, Gosnells and Midland. They cater for adults experiencing stress, anxiety, depression and other mild to moderate mental health or emotional challenges, as well as their family members, friends and carers. Armadale and Midland Head to Health are open from 10am – 8pm every single day of the year, while Gosnells and Mirrabooka are co-located in medical practices and open from 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday. All services are provided for free, with no referral, Medicare card or
appointment required. New clients are seen by an experienced mental health clinician, who can provide information, treatment and support for mental, social or emotional needs. If the input of a GP, psychologist or psychiatrist is needed, our staff can provide a referral and support during this time. Peer support workers are also on hand and use their own experience to support and empower others on their mental health journey.

Our twelve caregivers of the months as well as two sneaky stand ins!
Reflection
nostalgic. When I was growing up, my mum had a particular Christmas song she used to play while we decorated the tree. When I hear the first few notes of that song I am automatically transported back to my family home happily hanging homemade ornaments on a scraggly fresh pine tree with my sister. Music evokes emotions and memories that can be both encouraging and inspiring. It’s that time of year where festive tunes echo down supermarket aisles and screech loudly through the radio. It just so happens that I love singing and I love Christmas - When I am in full concert mode, I can give Mariah Carey a run for her money. (Well in my head anyway) I think what I love about Christmas singing is that there is a familiarity with the lyrics and the tunes that is inherently
When I hear my favourite carol, I am reminded of the story that forms the basis of my faith tradition. It reaffirms the way in which this story gives my life perspective and meaning, and challenges me to live the values it proclaims. I recognise that there are many religious and cultural beliefs that shape people’s lives, but for us in St John of God Health Care, the Christmas message of the birth of Jesus is fundamental to
understanding who we are as an organisation. In continuing the healing ministry of Jesus, we recognise who Jesus was, how he came to be and the teachings he instilled in his followers. The story of his birth is a reminder of God’s presence made known to us in the form of a human baby. A reminder of miracles and unexpected surprises - hope, joy, love and peace - despite the challenges life throws our way. Maybe that’s part of my connection to the music of Christmas - the reminder that God is with us. And in a world of increasing intolerance and hostility, where people are significantly impacted by poverty, war and human tragedy, maybe we need to feel God’s presence as a real and tangible comfort. Singing songs of faith and happy celebrations is one way to experience this.

Caregiver of the Month St Mary Ward Nominated by a patient “Alison went above and beyond to make me feel like a person while our son was in the special care nursery on St Mary ward earlier this year. She proudly wore her quokka scrub cap and spoke to me about her family, asked me about mine, and kept my mind busy as we waited to find out what was wrong with our son's heart. She had also
been caring for another little boy in the nursery who had been there much longer, and you would have thought he was a newbie because of the attention to detail and gentleness she showed him - and every baby to be fair! I was often without my wife in the nursery because of our older son, so Alison explained things to me as questions came up and chatted about all sorts of things which
was the best distraction for me. Our son received the very best care he could from Alison before he was transferred to PCH for further tests and monitoring. I will never forget Alison and how she made me feel as we were on the newborn rollercoaster with our baby. I hope she knows that her actions meant more to me than these words can describe, during a challenging time. Thanks for being you, Alison.”
An attitude of gratitude Let’s create a hospital wide “Attitude of Gratitude” for the festive season again. A time to thank another team, on behalf of our own team, for the hard work and dedication they have shown to our patients, our visitors, our doctors and our caregivers over the past 12 months. If you are unable to access a colour printer – please reach out to Holly Edwards for some hard copies. We strongly encourage you and your team to use the template to write to other departments, expressing your gratitude.
Then simply use Christmas tag stickers to seal the letter and pop into the internal mail. Or better yet – bring your letter down to the foyer and post in the red “Dear Santa” post box and our very own Christmas Elf (aka Gary) will personally deliver to the receiving department. No team is an island – and we all know that together we are stronger – so get writing and start sharing that “Attitude of Gratitude”! The post box will be at Reception until the end of December.

Light up the Lake with
On Sunday 3 December, Murdoch hosted over 350 people for our inaugural Light up the Lake with Love memorial event, in recognition of the challenges faced at Christmas while grieving. A reflective ceremony took place to both recognise the impact of loss and allow people to acknowledge their loved ones. Upon arrival, attendees were invited to write their loved one’s name on a card and hang it on the purpose-built memory tree. The ceremony was conducted by CEO Ben Irish, Director of Nursing Sarah-Jayne Powell, and Director of Mission Integration Jenni Ashton, and included reflective prayers, readings, and symbolic lighting of memorial candles. The evening was complete with string quartet Aquila providing a musical reflection. At the conclusion of the ceremony in the marquee, everyone quietly and reflectively walked down to the lake and watched as the area was lit up with spotlights and special effects. The SJGHC Foundation provided special Christmas keepsake baubles which could be pre-ordered or purchased on the night with proceeds being donated to Murdoch to support end of life care for patients and their families. There has been an overwhelming response of appreciation and gratitude to the hospital, for providing a meaningful way to recognise the loss of loved ones in a supportive and respectful way. Murdoch announces Dr Sanjay Mukhedkar as Doctor of the Year 2023 St John of God Murdoch Hospital proudly announces Dr Sanjay Mukhedkar as the recipient of the prestigious Doctor of the Year award for 2023. Dr Mukhedkar, originally from Hyderabad, India, embarked on his medical journey at Osmania Medical College and since then, has had a diverse career spanning across India, New Zealand, America, and Australia, making him a globally acclaimed oncologist. Starting as a general surgeon, Sanjay transitioned to oncology in his late twenties. His commitment to medical excellence and patient care led to the establishment of Oncology West with Associate Professor Kynan Feeney and Dr Daphne Tsoi in 2010, now the largest private group of Cancer Specialists in Western Australia. St John of God Murdoch Hospital CEO Ben Irish presented the honour, in front of his family
and colleagues on Thursday night in a celebration by the lake on the grounds of St John of God Murdoch Hospital. Mr Irish thanked Dr Mukhedkar for his endless commitment, compassion, and care for his patients, colleagues and everyone in between. “Sanjay is truly the embodiment of everything we work to achieve here at Murdoch and we cannot think of anyone more deserving for this award,” he said. “His contributions to the Hospital have elevated our standards, and we are privileged to celebrate his exceptional achievements as Doctor of the Year for 2023.” Sanjay’s newest venture is with Cyclowest, who are committed to providing nuclear treatment to patients around the world. Sanjay is working with the team to achieve its vision of developing modern cyclotron
and GMP radiopharmaceutical facilities for Australian domestic and Asia Pacific markets. Beyond his medical prowess, Sanjay’s second biggest love is cricket, which was evident through his establishment of the Australia Indian Medical Association cricket team. For Sanjay, this was a great way to bring colleagues together and to have fun on the fields, with the goal of focusing on mental and physical health. Many colleagues at St John of God Murdoch Hospital expressed gratitude to Dr Sanjay Mukhedkar for his unwavering commitment, compassion, and exemplary patient care, describing him as an embodiment of the hospital’s values. Congratulations to Dr Sanjay Mukhedkar, the St John of God Murdoch 2023 Doctor of the Year!

OHS Update - Safety Moment Getting Prepped for Christmas While getting into the Christmas Spirit, please be mindful of a few safety tips to ensure we all make it through the silly season safe and sound. •
Avoid Slips, Trips & Falls – Make sure any cables are out of the way and any decorations below knee height are easily identifiable. A trip to the floor is not the kind of trip you had in mind for a holiday.

Hanging Decorations – Always have a ‘spotter’ and make sure to use the right equipment such as a safety step. If you are still unable to reach, be sure to request access from engineering.
•
Electric Equipment – Make sure all electrical equipment has been tested and tagged prior to use, and continue to check for any wear n tear.
•
Fire Doors & Emergency Exits – Have these areas as no go zones for Christmas decorations. Decorations must not block access to these areas.
•
Clutter – make sure the areas are free of obstructions so traffic can move through the wards and departments without trouble. Sometimes less is more ;)

Congratulations to the 2024 Annette Guthrie Study Bursary Recipients!
Nat Sikhiao St John of God Murdoch Hospital is excited to announce the Annette Guthrie Study Bursary recipients for 2024. Through the support of the Beasley Family, St John of God Murdoch Hospital offers a study bursary for the encouragement and promotion of professional development for Patient Care Assistants. This study bursary was established to recall the dedication shown by Mrs Annette Guthrie in her role of Patient Care Assistant (PCA) at Murdoch Hospital and her passion for professional development. Director of Nursing at St John of God Murdoch Sarah-Jayne Powell said this year, the Beasley Family
Zeebeedae Crawage have generously offered two scholarships for 2024. “It is with great pleasure we announce that the Annette Guthrie Study Bursary Scholarships for 2024 have been awarded to Nat Sikhiao and Zeebeedae Crawage,” she said. “Both recipients will be completing the Certificate III in Health Service Assistance (Assisting in Nursing Work in Acute Care). “This certificate will enable Nat and Zee to work as AINs within the hospital setting.” Nat is currently working as a PCA on St Joseph ward, where she has been described as excelling in her commitment to quality care for our patients by the way she applies herself to her
current role. Nat demonstrates the qualities of justice and excellence on each shift. Zeebeedae is a PCA on St Rose ward and has been described as being a trusted and valued member of the team. She is attentive, professional, and dedicated to her work. Zee shows the values of respect and hospitality in her interactions with her team, patients, and their families. Sarah-Jayne Powell said that both recipients are extremely deserving of the Annette Guthrie Study Bursary. “We offer both caregivers our full support and wish them all the best in their professional development journey.” she said. Foundation Update - Donor-funded cranial ultrasound probe arrives at our hospital St John of God Murdoch Hospital will be the first adult hospital in Western Australia to offer a transformative new technology for brain cancer patients. Recent statistics show that over 2,000 Australians are diagnosed with a type of brain cancer each year. To help meet the needs of people in our community who are facing a brain cancer diagnosis, St John of God Murdoch Hospital has recently invested in state-of-the-art neurosurgery equipment, including the LoopX Intraoperative CT, and upgrades to our Brainlab System. Now, thanks to the support of generous donors, our hospital has been able to purchase a Cranial Ultrasound Probe that provides active imaging for neurosurgeons during surgery. By enabling neurosurgeons to visualise the tumours in real time during surgery, there is greater scope to achieve outcomes for the patient efficiently and safely. It significantly increases the likelihood of surgeons achieving complete tumour resection and therefore greatly improves the prognosis for the patient. Importantly, this technology has the benefit of more accurately identifying and removing the tumour without removing unnecessary tissue or causing any damage to surrounding healthy tissue in the brain. The cranial ultrasound also reduces the overall time the patient spends under anaesthetic.
