As I was preparing to facilitate a recent See Me as a Person session, I opened a folder of notes and a handwritten quote dropped out. It was one of my favourites from Brene Brown: “Empathy is a strange and powerful thing. There is no script. There is no right way or wrong way to do it. It’s
This quote is a reminder about the transforming power of empathy and how it can impact the lives of others. For those of us providing healthcare on a daily basis the impact of empathy can sometimes be underestimated. Whilst we can never truly walk in another person’s shoes, we know from our own experiences what a shared moment of connection or support means when we are afraid, lonely or sad. Empathy matters. Not only does it remind us we are not alone, it reassures us that we are seen, heard and understood by somebody. Your empathy matters. Your smile when you enter a patients room; your conscious listening to someone’s concerns; your

holding of a hand when taking observations; your social chit chat when transporting a patient; or your respectful communication when receiving room service orders, conveys a sense of safety and security. Every time you stop and listen with empathy and understanding you are restoring healing, hope and greater sense of dignity to someone who needs it. As you are reading this, there is a person in our hospital who is right this minute experiencing a powerful moment of heartfelt connection and security because one of our caregivers is offering them empathy. Thank you to all of you, for your empathy for others that makes the world and our hospital a better place.

Our twelve caregivers of the months as well as two sneaky stand ins!
Foundation Update - Telethon funding to support bubs in NICU and their families Over the past year, funding from Channel 7 Telethon Trust has directly helped families in the NICU and Special Care Nursery at both St John of God Murdoch and Subiaco Hospitals, through the purchase of ‘Angel Eyes’ camera systems. Now, thanks to generous donors at the Leeuwin Lunch for Telethon, additional funding has supported the purchase of a Foetal Monitoring Machine for Subiaco, and a baby ventilator for Murdoch. The new ventilator will offer vital temporary ventilation for babies born with critical, life threatening conditions, while they wait for emergency transport to take them to a specialist neonatal care facility. Having access to this equipment at St John of God Murdoch Hospital will help improve outcomes for neonatal babies and give them the best possible fighting chance. “The addition of this new stateof-the-art ventilator to the neonatal unit at St John of God Murdoch Hospital will ensure we are providing the best evidence based care to our babies,” said St John of God Murdoch Hospital Clinical Midwifery Specialist Sarah Sheehan. “It will allow us to provide high level oxygen requirements for pre-term babies prior to transfer, ensuring better long-term outcomes. The entire neonatal medical team, nurses and midwives on St Mary’s ward are
excited for the arrival of the new ventilator and looking forward to the education and training.” These amazing new technologies will help countless WA families during the precious first days of their baby’s life, and we are very grateful to the Channel 7 Telethon Trust for their support. Commencing on 12 October, Murdoch celebrated our Festival of Thanks, a celebration of you to say thank you for your hard work this year and always. Over the course of the week, caregivers were treated to coffees and sweet treats, roaming musicians, a fresh juice bar, yoga and yoghurt bowls, ice cream, massages and more. There was also a free caregiver lunch served by managers in the caregiver courtyard, which saw the return of everyone’s favourite hot jam donuts van! The Murdoch Leadership team had a great time celebrating you and all that you do for our patients with this very special festival.

Values awards Preeti Chauhan for an Excellence Award Nominated by St Emilie Ward “We have had a complex patient on our ward the last 55 days that Preeti has been completely devoted to. This patient’s journey has been anything but straightforward, or according to plan, but Preeti has been there for the patient and the caregivers every step of the way. Preeti has started early, finished late and even left her mobile number with caregivers overnight, so they could access her support if needed. The patient is discharging home tomorrow and Preeti has been crucial in this
coming to fruition. We cannot thank Preeti enough for her compassion and her continual striving for a great outcome for this patient.”
OHS Update - PPE Over the recent months, there has been a worrying increase in biohazard exposure related incidents which have been a result of caregivers not wearing adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), most notably eye protection. Biohazard exposures are a serious occupational risk which require serology testing of both the patient and caregiver to rule out any transmission of disease. This of course can be a difficult and anxious process for those involved and something that should be avoided at all costs.
Some recent examples include; • Umbilical cord splash injury to the face. • Changing blood bags and sustained splash to eye. • Blood spurted in eye while examining wound. • Splashed blood into caregivers face while removing cannula. Please let this be a reminder that PPE, including eye protection must be worn in any situation where there is a risk of biohazard exposure. We all have a responsibility to ensure that we act safely and appropriately in the workplace to ensure the health and safety of ourselves and the people that we work with.

NPS Team Rewards St Rose Ward celebrated their >80 NPS score for August with Dining Room Vouchers for the team. A patient commented, “The attention to care and the helpfulness of the staff were remarkable. They were all very caring, and I found all the staff to be excellent. I can genuinely say that I enjoyed my stay.”
St Catherine Ward celebrated with Cookies and Coffee Vouchers for the entire team for receiving >80 NPS for August. “The staff were all upbeat, friendly, and efficient, emphasising the importance of the people in the care process,” a patient commented.

DPU/DOSA celebrated their Feast Day for St Rachael the Archangel on 3 October. St Raphael is patron of travellers, the blind, happy meetings, nurses, physicians, medial workers.

St Michael Ward celebrated their Feast Day on 5 October for St Gabriel and St Michael the Archangels. They are known as the Messengers from God. St Francis of Assisi was celebrated by the St Francis Ward on 4 October. St Francis was a lover of all creatures and people, advocate for the poor, and was against corruption in the church. Security celebrated their Feast Day for St Oscar Romero on 16 October, who was the Patron saint for Social Justice.

St Therese of Lisieu was celebrated by Angiography on 17 October. St Therese of Lisieu lived each day with an unshakable confidence in God’s love. She wrote, “what matters in life are not great deeds, but great love.” Angiography St Luke Ward celebrated St Luke on 19 October, who was the patron saint of physicians and surgeons. Foundation Day celebrations Foundation Day was on the 7 October. It is on this day we acknowledged, recognised, and celebrated the foundation of the Order of St John of God, established in 1871. We remembered the over 150 years of remarkable work and ongoing legacy that the Sisters of St John of God achieved across three continents, including here in Australia where they established St John of God Health Care. This year, Murdoch celebrated Foundation Day on 10 October. Caregivers were encouraged to reflect on the organisation’s Christian origins and honour the bravery, courage, commitment, and innovation of the founding Sisters. On the day, caregivers celebrated with a coffee van by the lake, and a lunch in the caregiver dining room where we raised a whopping $1228.60 for our Charity of the Year. There was also a Mass and Commissioning Ceremony in the Hospital Chapel to welcome our new managers, including our CEO Ben Irish, presented by SJGHC COO Bed Edwards.

Department Spotlight - Pastoral Care This week is Pastoral Care Week! This year the theme is ‘What does spiritual wellbeing look like?’, which speaks to the human search for meaning, purpose, and connection to something greater than ourselves. We have an amazing team of Pastoral caregivers who attend to the spiritual and emotional wellbeing of patients by actively listening and exploring their experiences. They are often found at the bedside of those facing their last moments of life; supporting a new family who have just welcomed a baby; or providing a calming, non-judgemental presence for those overwhelmed with their circumstances. Their therapeutic engagement provides healing and hope, whilst promoting wellbeing and resilience. Get to know the incredible team as we put them in the spotlight!
Jenni Ashton - Acting Director of Mission Integration 15 years at SJOG Murdoch Prior to taking on the role as Acting Director of Mission Integration at St John of God Murdoch Hospital, Jenni was Manager of Pastoral Services, responsible for establishing contemporary pastoral services at the Hospital. Jenni has over 35 years’ experience in hospital pastoral care and mission integration. She holds a Masters in Social Science: Counselling and Psychotherapy; a Bachelor of Theology; and Diploma of Ministry and Leadership.
Fun Fact: I used to have my one of a kind applique windcheater designs in a shop front window display in Melbourne.

Deirdre taught agriculture in WA and PNG, then studied theology and taught in the Northern Territory and then Fiji.
10 years at SJOG Murdoch May trained as a certified public accountant in Malaysia, then worked as a hedge fund accountant in Hong Kong for a decade before deciding that there is more to life than financial statements. Hours spent in the hospital system with ill family members gave her the insight that the person in the bed is a unique human being, not a file number, and not a problem to be fixed. So she wandered into pastoral care and the rest is history. Fun Fact: I am really bad at balancing my own books. I am a wannabe gardener. I am not a pastor.
Fr Pius Laten - Catholic Priest Started at SJOG Murdoch in October 2023 Fr Pius worked as a teacher and later as a distributor sales representative. Later, he served as Secretary to the Bishop of Yendi, Ghana and the parish priest of Holy Trinity Quasiparish Wapuli. Besides this, he performed the function of Master of Ceremonies. Fun Fact: I had the call to become a priest at about age 15, but it took a while before I responded.

Fun Fact: When I was about 14 I learnt about Gregor Mendel and tried to breed salt-resistant peas on our farm to solve WA’s saltland problem—not realising that peas are extremely salt sensitive!
Georgia Mackiewicz Administration 3 years at SJOG Murdoch Georgia worked in Catering for the past 3 years as a ward host and has been working in Pastoral Services for the last 4 months as an administration assistant. She is studying Computer Science, and did most of her schooling in Dubai before moving back to Australia when she was 16. Fun Fact: I make great origami hats
Lynn Anderson – Pastoral Practitioner 8 years at SJOG Murdoch with a break, and have been back for 1 year Lynn’s background is nursing and midwifery. She has always been drawn to holistic care. The unique

Belinda Hill - Pastoral Practitioner Over 2 years at SJOG Murdoch Belinda was an Army Officer, management consultant, has worked with the monks of New Norcia, and ran a network supporting teachers of Religious and Philosophical Studies across Australasia. Fun Fact: I swam the English Channel in a team of 5 people in 2001.
Christine Kain - Pastoral Practitioner 9 months at SJOG Murdoch Christine started her working life as a Registered Nurse and worked across a range of settings. She then studied law and worked with Legal Aid. Since then, she has lectured at ECU and worked in policy and parliamentary roles. Christine completed a placement as a Pastoral trainee at FSH before coming to SJOG Murdoch. Fun Fact: I love to read all kinds of fiction and fantasy is one of my favourite genres
Mary Prentice – Pastoral Practitioner 7 years at SJOG Subiaco and 2 years at SJOG Murdoch For 20 years, Mary had a fulltime occupation at home with her 5 kids, along with lots of volunteer work in church and community. A SJOG nurse suggested that she join the Pastoral Services team and she has never looked back. Fun Fact: Since taking up gardening the past 10 years, my family have to deal with smell of compost wafting through the place and midges all over the house

Sheila Sims – Pastoral Practitioner 1 year at SJOG Murdoch Sheila has been working as part of the Pastoral Care team at SJOG Murdoch for just over a year. Before she became interested in the world of Pastoral Care, she dabbled in many different employment backgrounds from banking, property management, and Allied Health when she wasn’t full time mothering little humans and Labradors! Fun Fact: I grew up in Zimbabwe and I’ve made a home in five countries on four continents.

Jan has been at SJOG Murdoch since Jan 2023, qualifying in pastoral care in 2022. In her previous life, she was a registered nurse in clinical and management roles in holistic health care settings mostly in the community. Jan has had the privilege of walking alongside people from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds at different stages in their life journeys from babyhood to end of life. Her nursing background is now complementing her pastoral work.
Lis has had a varied work life in a range of fields including graphic design, administration, hospitality, and roles within the Church with a significant period of time as a stay at home mum for my two beautiful girls. Lis studied ministry at Morling College Perth before working as a school chaplain at Australian Christian College prior to coming to SJOG. She has a passion for hospital chaplaincy and particularly enjoy working with the elderly.
Fun Fact: One of my happy places is swimming at the beach all year round in rain, hail (not lightening) or sunshine. It is pure joy!

Tanya Trezona – Pastoral Practitioner 2 years at SJOG Murdoch Tanya has a background in Chaplaincy and Teaching. She has worked in Education for a large part of her life – 12 years as a chaplain and 20 years as a teacher. Fun Fact: I love to collect and write with fountain pens, and I love to wear blue mascara.
Natalie Kay – Casual Pastoral Practitioner 13 years at SJOG Murdoch (with a little break) Natalie began her journey at Murdoch in 2011, and over time, she has worked across every specialty. She loves the community here and the opportunity to collaborate with caregivers to support our patients and families on their best and worst days. In another lifetime, Natalie had a background in Fine Art and Education. When not at
Murdoch, she works as a Somatic therapist, supporting those travelling through bereavement and burnout. Fun Fact: Don’t start me talking about Polyvagal theory!

She enjoys interacting with people and listening to what matters to them. Angela likes being part of a team where all people are valued no matter their culture, beliefs, or circumstances.

Allied Health Day On 11 October, our Allied Health team celebrated Allied Health Day by hosting a game of Wheel of Fortune and a Silent Auction, and raised an incredible $1536.50 for our Charity of the Year! Our Allied Health at Murdoch team consists of seven different Allied Health disciplines – Social Work, Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Diabetes Education, Speech Pathology, Music Therapy and Physiotherapy! Each Allied Health profession has a defined core scope of practice and governing body with defined membership requirements. Our Allied Health practitioners have specialised expertise in preventing, diagnosing and treating a range of conditions and illnesses.
Allied Health form part of the multidisciplinary team to provide specialised support for different patient needs and play a crucial role in discharge planning. At Murdoch, we are continuing to develop and grow our Allied
Health service offerings in order to improve patient safety, quality, and experience. We have a number of exciting quality improvement and research projects underway currently and have a full calendar of student placements planned for 2024!
Continence Workshop On Monday 16th October, the St John of God Murdoch Continence Service held a very successful Continence Workshop, providing handson learning opportunities for caregivers with the use of interactive workstations.
The workshop provided the opportunity to discuss and explore incontinence management options with the support of local representatives providing expert knowledge in the field. Incontinence can be extremely challenging for both our patients and their carers,
but help is available from a range of sources. There was plenty of time for Q & A sessions allowing increased knowledge and raising awareness in this specialized area. Fantastic work, Continence Service!

Carers Week National Carers Week was 15 – 21 October, and is an important opportunity to raise awareness of the unpaid carers within our community. Our incredible Hospice team celebrated the week with a morning tea supported by Carers WA, who support the empowerment of carers through a range of programs, services, and advocacy.

Introducing Sophia Zilli, the first Occupational Therapy Student at Murdoch! The Allied Health team have welcomed Sophia Zilli for an eight week placement! Sophia is a final year Occupational Therapy student at Curtin University, and is the first OT student to join us at St John of God Murdoch. Get to know Sophia as she answers some questions!
1. Why do you want to be an Occupational Therapist? I’ve been studying for a very long time now, seven years and counting. In my time, I’ve learnt a lot about human services and what it means to be a health professional in today’s world. I started with a degree in psychology and firmly planted myself in the Master of Occupational Therapy after a discussion with an Occupational Therapist working in the emergency department at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. After learning about what Occupational Therapists do and their role in the world of Allied Health, I felt that this profession was a clear marriage of two interests (psychology and human anatomy). Occupational therapists are well placed to do an immense amount of good in the lives of people who live with challenging illnesses. The perspective that Occupational Therapists take is not to look at the person through a deficit’s lens, but through a strengthsbased lens; focusing intervention
on what the person wants to achieve within the parameters of their capacity. It’s a profession that takes a very holistic look at a person rather than focusing on one small element of that person’s life. Which can truly make the world of difference. I want to be an Occupational Therapist because I want to dedicate my life to helping people and enabling them to live a fulfilling life.
2. Do you have a particular area of interest that you hope to specialise in? Throughout my degree, I’ve always been really interested in neurorehabilitation and working in a hospital setting where I am exposed to a wide variety of clinical presentations. I enjoy a challenge and thinking critically about how best to support a person with their goals. At this point in my career, I don’t have a clear direction for specialisation. I want to gain more experience prior to choosing an area of interest to focus on. One of the beauties of occupational therapy is that we’re a bit of a ‘Jack of all trades’, and so far I feel that I’ve only just scratched the surface of what’s to come in my future professional experiences.

4. Will you share with us an occasion of care during your undergraduate training that has had an impact on your professional growth as a clinician? All my practical placement experiences have impacted on my growth as a professional. If I had to choose one aspect to describe, I’d say that patient advocacy is what sticks out in my mind. As health professionals we often work in multidisciplinary teams; where communication is paramount to the quality of care delivered. Observing my supervisors advocate for patient and client wellbeing, choice and safety has really brought home how, sometimes, as health professionals we can act as a voice for the people who otherwise wouldn’t have one within the health professional team environment. Demonstrating that the client/ patient should always be at the centre of any care delivered.
3. What has been your experience so far being part of the SJOG Murdoch family? The Allied Health team here at SJOG is truly amazing. I’ve felt welcomed and supported throughout these first few weeks and anticipate that that will only continue throughout the rest of my time here. Kimberley Montgomery and Cate Thomas shine at ACHSM Conference
From 11-13 October, Kimberley Montgomery (Deputy Director of Nursing, Specialist Services) and Cate Thomas (Acting Director Organisation Development and Improvement), both attended the Australian College of Health Service Managers (ACHSM) AsiaPacific health leadership congress in Canberra. The ACHSM is an annual AsiaPacific Conference which brings together leaders in health service delivery from public, private, not for profit, community and aged care sectors. This year’s conference had a focus on sustainability, workforce, wellbeing, clinical governance
and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health. Kimberley Montgomery did a presentation on Murdoch’s journey over the last four years to improve patient safety and quality of care. The presentation was focused on how we created a culture of inquiry to achieve a reduction in harmful events across the hospital. “It was a joy and privilege to represent Murdoch and share the wonderful work that we do day in and day out to ensure patient safety and quality of care,” Kimberley said. “There was also an opportunity to reconnect with people in health who I hadn’t seen for some time, and to meet new

people. Presenting alongside Dr Cathy Balding who is one of Australia’s greats in quality improvement was also a pretty surreal experience!” Kimberley said she gained a lot of insight that could have a positive impact on Murdoch going forward. “Listening to innovative ways that other hospitals have approached workforce challenges as well as how technology has been integrated to improve hospital operations, efficiencies and safety was really interesting and certainly has application to our service,” she said. Highly esteemed professor awarded Lifetime Achievement Honour Roll Award at WA Nursing and Midwifery Awards (WANMEA) Leanne has made significant strides in cancer research. As a member of the Cancer Australia funded Primary Care Cancer Collaborative Trials Group, the Clinical Oncological Society of Australia Cancer Coordination groups, and the Supportive Care Working Group of the Blood Cancer Taskforce, she played a vital role in advancing cancer care and support systems across Australia.
Professor Leanne Monterosso was named as one of two additions to the WANMEA Lifetime Achievement Honour Roll for 2023 at the WA Nursing and Midwifery awards on Friday 6 October.
One of Leanne’s significant accomplishments was the evaluation of the WA Cancer Nurse Coordinator Service in 2011, which led to key recommendations for enhancing the network’s framework, resources, and clinical/strategic components.
The Lifetime Achievement Honour Roll is awarded to nurses and midwives who have had highly impactful careers, changing the nursing and midwifery landscape in Western Australia, nationally and internationally.
Her research findings influenced the development of survivorship objectives for the 2012 WA Cancer Plan and a Cancer Survivorship Collaborative, highlighting her commitment to improving the lives of cancer patients beyond their treatment.
This achievement is a culmination of Leanne’s forty year career.
Leanne also conducted extensive national and statewide research that culminated in providing the evidence to support the development of the WA Child and Adolescent Health Care Paediatric Palliative Care Service.
Leanne holds a strong legacy at both St John of God Murdoch Hospital and the University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA). She was jointly appointed as Chair of Nursing (Clinical Nursing) at Notre Dame, and Chair of Nursing Research (Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Research) at St John of God Murdoch. Throughout her illustrious career expanding over forty years,

and midwifery professions and to the nursing care of neonatal and paediatric patients, adult patients with cancer or undergoing palliative care, and midwifery patients, both directly and through her impact on interventions and policy changes at the state, national and international level,” she said. “We are exceptionally proud of Leanne and her legacy as a pioneer in research and care. “Her work has touched and continues to touch countless lives, and her dedication to improving the wellbeing of patients and their families will continue to inspire us for many years to come. “Leanne’s dedication and passion to nursing and midwifery research has been pivotal in supporting and encouraging many of our nurses and midwives to undertake their own research and in some cases changing outcomes for patients and their families through best practice.” Notre Dame’s National Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery Professor Karen Clark-Burg described Leanne as someone who was generous with her time and expertise, and said her work had an impact on nurses, midwives and patients around the world. “Leanne leads with grace and humility and is endlessly supportive of her students and colleagues,” she said. “She takes the time to acknowledge their achievements and hard work, seeking opportunities to recognise

Professor Peter Bremner appointed to St John of God Health Care Board Sanderson AC CVO said that Peter’s appointment would continue the emphasis on the governance of clinical safety and medical excellence, one of the Board’s primary areas of focus. “Peter has breadth and depth of experience at St John of God Health Care as both a clinician and from a governance perspective, providing a unique insight and perspective which has already and will continue to contribute to the Board’s oversight of these critical areas,” she said.
St John of God Health Care has announced the appointment of Professor Peter Bremner to its Board. His appointment takes effect from 1 November. Professor Bremner is a highly respected thoracic physician and Professor for Respiratory Medicine, at St John of God Murdoch Hospital. He has a long association with St John of God Health Care, contributing significantly to medical governance and clinical excellence throughout this time. He has been Chairman of the St John of God Murdoch Hospital Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) since 2003, was Chairman of the Physicians Craft Group at the hospital from 2018-22,
and is a serving member of the St John of God Health Care Patient Experience and Clinical Excellence (PEaCE) and the Clinical Incident Review Board subcommittees. He has also played an active roles in the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand at both a Federal and State level, holding a broad range of committee positions over many years. He has held committee positions at Fremantle Hospital and Mount Hospital. He is currently on the Board of Sleep Studies Australia and is the Medical Director of TrialsWest, a private fully funded respiratory clinical trials group. He became the Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Notre Dame Australia in 2015 and is actively involved in both undergraduate and post graduate teaching, in addition to leading an active clinical research program with TrialsWest. In 2012, he was awarded Doctor of the Year at St John of God Murdoch Hospital.

Health Matters – Djaalinj Waakinj Our strong ties to the Djaalinj Waakinj Ear Health Program was recently highlighted in Catholic Health Australia’s Health Matters magazine, as the lead story. Since the start of our partnership with the program, more than 50 children’s lives have been changes for the better, having
received free ear, nose and throat surgery. Murdoch has raised more than $80,000 for the program, and with additional funding contributions from St John of God Health Care, the total raised for the program is over $100,000. We are now thrilled to announce that we have signed an extension of our collaborative
