A message from the CEO Government viability agreement
Hello Murdoch Caregivers. Here are some quick updates for your March Murdoch Monthly: Critical Worker Protocols This is a set of rules available for relevant organisations (including hospitals) to use if its workforce is being significantly impacted by the furloughing of close contacts. The rules allow us to identify individual caregivers who they require to return to work within their furloughing period. The Hospital will only make this decision if this caregiver’s absence is causing significant risks to our ability to care for patients, and their return is subject to strict rules including regular RAT tests. These caregivers remain in isolation from the community in all aspects except for the purposes of travelling to and from Murdoch.
To allow our Hospital to keep running despite the upcoming restrictions on elective surgery, we have entered a viability agreement with the Government. This means the Government will fund the Hospital during that period and that all our jobs are secure – including all casuals and fulltimers. It does require some give and take and we must be ready to support the public sector when asked. It is important that we all enter the weeks ahead with a flexible mindset and be prepared to potentially step out of our regular roles.
Caregiver exit points – after hours If you exit via Hospital Main Entrance after hours, please use the Caregiver Entry door next to the Duty Manager’s office. This will minimise opportunities for unscreened visitors to enter the Hospital after hours.

St John of God Day I hope you all had the chance to enjoy the delicious paella and Portuguese tart for lunch on St John of God Day. I am looking forward to next year when we will celebrate it without masks and social distancing will be a distant memory.
Sister Bridget Clancy Scholarship recipients Happy International Women’s Day for March 8 and big congratulations to the nine incredible caregivers who were announced on the day as recipients of St John of God Healthcare’s inaugural Sister Bridget Clancy Scholarship for the empowerment of women through education.

Reflection are struggling in the midst of the changes that surround you whether it be at work or at home please seek help. Talk to a friend or colleague; phone a support line; or visit your GP for advice.
It has been suggested by the English philosopher and writer, Alan Watts, that “the only way to make sense of change is to plunge into it, move with it and join the dance.” If this is true the dance floor is getting a bit messy! I don’t know about you but I am feeling a little unsure about how to dance these currents of change. It doesn’t feel very graceful or pretty that’s for sure. If you
Mission may look a little different over the coming months as we adjust to increasing COVID restrictions, but rest assured our mission is alive and well and being lived out every day in so many areas of our hospital. The Murdoch spirit of cooperation is clear in the way caregivers have pulled together to support each other as routines have changed and people’s vulnerability becomes more obvious. Thank you for looking out for each other and for showing hospitality and compassion in your interactions with each other. We are all dancing the best we can and certainly not alone! As we face restrictions on movement around the hospital
and food sharing, some of our mission events such as feast days and caregiver of the month celebrations will be deferred until later in the year.
Fundraising for Djaalinj Waakinj We are as committed as ever to our fundraising for the Djaalinj Waakinj program but we recognise this will be difficult during the coming months as movement around the hospital is restricted. When the storm has blown over we will again be encouraging you and your teams to return to the fundraising activities that you have embraced so enthusiastically over recent years.

An extra special delivery at Murdoch It won’t be hard for Bodhi James Turner to remember his birthday! He was born five days early, but managed to arrive at an incredibly memorable moment. "Bodhi decided to arrive on the 22nd of the second at 2.22 and 22 seconds," mum Kylie Najjar said. Bodhi was welcomed into the world on St Mary’s ward here at St John of God Murdoch Hospital, with the help of midwife Katie. A happy, healthy baby boy, Bodhi is the final additional to a beautiful family of three boys.
To be born at this exact moment is an incredibly low chance – 1 in 30 million to be exact. This is the same odds as being struck by lightning or giving birth to quads. he cared for his community influences the way we seek to care for those we serve today.

Caregiver of the Year announced Congratulations to Mel Mott, who was announced as our Caregiver of the Year for 2021. Mel has been at Murdoch for over 15 years and is a highly respected, invaluable member of the Murdoch family. An experienced midwife, Mel is a huge support for the junior and senior caregivers alike on St Mary’s ward. She is also a lecturer at Notre Dame for students studying Midwifery.
Mel was joined by her manager Sue and fellow midwife and caregiver of the month Karyn. Congratulations again to all of our Caregivers of the Month for 2021!

Caregiver of the Month Caitlyn McKane - January 2021 Congratulations to Caitlyn McKane who has been awarded our Caregiver of the Month for January, for her extra compassionate care of a young child who’s loved one had died
in ICU. Caitlyn’s manager is delighted that she has been nominated for a Caregiver of the Month award. “Caitlyn is a caring and compassionate caregiver who is always willing to help others. She is calm and resourceful, and tries to be

responsive to people’s individual needs. She is a caregiver who lives our values and is a deserving recipient of this award.” Caitlyn’s celebration with her colleagues will be deferred until later in the year.

Caregiver of the Month Jane Willis - December 2021 Nomination: I visited ED recently after dealing with a car fire in the Wexford carpark. Whilst I was in ED, Jane Willis from OHS visited me, checked in on me and made sure I was ok. She looked after me like a family member. I was nervous about a procedure they were thinking about doing, but Jane showed extreme compassion and respect towards me as she could see in my eyes how worried I was at the time. She spoke to my wife and let her know I was ok and stayed with me whilst they investigated possible risk of burn or contamination from a fire extinguisher discharge. Her OHS knowledge and support just when I needed it was extremely appreciated. The Hospital values to me are so very important. Jane definitely demonstrated
them on this day to me. If you could consider her kindly for COTM I know she deserves it, going above and beyond.
Manager comments: Jane Willis goes above and beyond with her continued care and support for Murdoch caregivers. She is an expert in her area of Injury Management and she is no doubt very well known throughout the hospital given the positive impact she has during daily interactions. When providing assistance to injured caregivers she is always compassionate towards the individual and how an injury no matter how serious can affect them. The role of an Injury Management Consultant can be incredibly busy from day to day, Jane is able to maintain a positive outlook and pass it on to the injured caregiver often racking up hundreds of steps
meeting each one of them face to face. Jane has been a vital member of the OHS team since 2017 and I would recommend her for COTM a million times over.

My elderly Mother-in-Law had taken a tumble and badly bruised her hip & buttock (losing the ability to walk). We admitted her to the ED of SJG Murdoch and the service from all of the team members was fantastic. From the pre-COVID screening team, to admissions, to the doctors, nurses and carers. Whilst it did take a while for her to get the necessary scans, and a room allocated, understand that there is a system in place that needs to prioritise patients based on their injury/requirements and this obviously affects the timeframes in evaluating a patient. One of the surprising highlights of her stay was the quality of the food on offer. Generally, we
think of hospital food as being nutritionally sound, but bland/ boring. Not at Murdoch. Their "Room Service" food menu was off the charts. Patients can order meals at a time that suits them, and the menu selection is better than some hotels I’ve stayed at - tasty snacks (muffins, banana bread, minipies/sausage rolls), pasta, salads, soups, sandwiches/rolls, burgers, stir-fry’s, grilled steak/chicken, deserts, smoothies, milkshakes it was AMAZING. Hats off to the Kitchen team for thinking out of the box in delivering a solution that exceeded expectations. Whilst no one wants to spend any more time in hospital than they need to. The combined effort of everyone involved with
my Mother-in-law’s stay, made what is usually a pretty stressful situation, into something very bearable - thank you all again!

The care and the service given by the staff and caregivers were of very high standards. Patient care and well-being was the primary focus.

The all-round care from my registration to my discharge the people involved were kind and very professional in my stay.

OHS tips - Masks and Skin Care to touch and can sting when creams are applied
As we all know by now, wearing a facemask is essential to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Unfortunately, it is no secret that wearing masks for an extended period of time can get uncomfortable and generally unpleasant, for some of us can even lead to skin irritation and other issues like ‘Maskne’. With the introduction of N95 respirator masks we have seen an increase in caregivers experiencing symptoms and adverse reactions from the tighter fitting masks. These symptoms generally fall into 3 main categories; Fit/friction - Red indents showing the outline of the mask are obvious • Skin is generally not broken • Red areas are hypersensitive

Occlusion (Maskne) an acnetype irritation occurs when oil, skin, sweat and/or dirt have been trapped against the skin and mask. • Acne zone appears under mask • Clusters in areas where moisture is trapped Allergic reaction • Very few people experience a true allergic reaction. So what can you do if you are experiencing mask related skin irritation? 1. Take active steps to improve your skin condition Regularly use moisturiser and increase water intake to improve the quality of the skin.

2. Develop and follow a skin care regime. 3. Use an emollient or barrier cream as it will act as a skin lubricant and reduce the friction and improve the skin barrier. 4. If Occlusion/Maskne - use an anti-acne product, a skin cleaning regime and exfoliate to remove the dead skin. 5. Avoid the use of heavy foundation irritation. 6. Take time to correct uncomfortable mask fits before irritation occurs. 7. Seek help from your OHS team if the problem persists despite taking the steps above.

World Music Therapy Day World Music Therapy Day, which is celebrated on March 1, is a day for people all around the world to celebrate the healing power of music. People have always known and spoken about the power and benefits of music, in the clinical field. Music therapists use music to help people with disabilities, people with mental issues, the elderly, children and more. It is an established health profession where music is used
therapeutically to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs.

The Scholarship programs are designed to support the career development and professional growth of our caregivers, and each scholarship recipient receives financial support to help them with the cost of their studies, as well as access to mentors and ongoing cohort communication.
Welcoming our 2022 Graduates A few weeks ago, we welcomed our most recent nurses into our Pathways to Practice program! Over the next 12 months, they will complete two 6-month rotations on the wards across a range of areas including maternity, emergency departments, paediatrics, medical and surgical specialties. We are excited to watch our nurses thrive!

Featuring Foundation This is a new edition to the Murdoch Monthly where we will be highlighting stories, in conjunction with the St John of God Foundation. All of these stories are involve Murdoch patients, caregivers or happenings around the hospital. Keep your eye out for upcoming stories… High quality data collection is fundamental to successful clinical trials. Accurate data helps to optimise trial outcomes, improves safety for patients receiving new and potentially experimental therapies, and supports the development of treatments which will help many patients now and into the future. Thanks to donations from the community, a state-of-theart electrocardiograph (ECG) machine and vital signs monitor, have recently been purchased for St John of God Murdoch Hospital. This equipment will be dedicated
to patients participating in ground-breaking oncology clinical trials conducted by researchers at Murdoch and across the globe. As an example, St John of God Murdoch Hospital was recently involved in a global trial of a cancer drug that can double the disease-free survival time in patients with oesophageal cancer. The drug, which is already approved for other cancers such as Hodgkin’s lymphoma, melanoma and kidney cancer, gives hope for people with early-stage oesophageal cancer to be able to live cancer-free for longer. St John of God Murdoch Hospital’s Head of Cancer Services, Associate Professor Kynan Feeney, said it was hoped the drug would become the new standard of care. With the new donor-funded equipment, researchers like A/ Prof. Feeney and his team will

be able to ensure consistency of data collection, and adherence to the often strict time points required for clinical trials. Patients’ records can also be stored on the devices, allowing real-time monitoring for any trends or changes in their health, so that caregivers can optimise the care they provide whilst the patients are participating in clinical research. The new equipment will also broaden the scope of clinical trials offered at St John of God Murdoch Hospital, providing patients with access to new and innovative treatments that otherwise would not have been available. World Cancer Day 2022 The amazing Years 2 students from Mater Christi Catholic Primary School helped us to recognise patients who are courageously fighting cancer, this World Cancer Day. They made some beautiful,
bright decorations which lit up the Cancer Centre and also created some hand made bookmarks for all of our patients. Thank you to Clinical Nurse Margaret for getting Miss Harwood and the Year 2's from Mater Christi involved in this important day.
