Cemetery Newsletter—Alumni & Friends Update

Greetings to all from the Saint John’s Abbey, Parish, and Alums / Friends Cemetery Office. Another winter season has ended, and spring is turning the corner to summer (maybe…) Still a bit cold for this time of year, but the grass is growing and the flowers on campus are in bloom. We are preparing for the Memorial Day Service (Monday, May 25). Included at the end of the newsletter are the names and cemetery section of veterans here at Saint John’s.

Memorial Day Service—
Monday, May 25, 2026 at 11:15 a.m.
All are welcome to attend the annual Memorial Day Service at Saint John’s cemetery honoring the deceased who served in the United States military.
The service includes prayer and a roll call of the names of those buried at Saint John’s who have served their country in the military. Throughout the Memorial Day weekend, American flags will be in place at the military service members’ grave sites.
Parking is readily available inside the Alums section circular driveway with actual service being held at the Parish section. Please join us!
Construction Work at the Cemetery—Updates Added in 2025
Last summer and fall brought some additions to the cemetery: another columbarium wall was added (Hillside Wall 3#) and new ground spaces for alums and for monks. This airview shows the changes and updates.
For the monks, only six burial spaces remain in their current section on their hillside area. A new monastery cemetery section has been added to the west of the Alums and Friends sections. This monastery burial section is surrounded on three sides by a low granite wall, with a stairwell connecting the two areas.
For Alums: Section 47 provides additional inground burial options. Five rows of single lots have been surveyed in this section. (It was timely, as availability of single lots in Sections 41 and 45 had been depleted last year.)
Hillside Wall #3 is new—offering four rows of columbarium niches with views towards Lake Sagatagen. And someday, as needed, the three foundations for future columbarium walls (located between Section #47 and the future Monastery section) can be constructed. For now, they serve as a planting space and the nearby benches offer a peaceful area to sit and reflect.
