Outras verdades Federico Bertolazzi

E a casa é disso o flagrante fantasma.

I only met Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen once, on 10 June 1991, near the Convent of Christ in Tomar. The Portugal Day celebrations were taking place at the time. My most enduring memory of her is seeing her walk through the garden, moving away from the crowd and sitting down to gaze at the horizon, as if letting her imagination wander into the infinite distance. Where did her thoughts take her at that moment? Twenty eight years have passed since that day. Everything has changed. I walk through some of the places she touched. It’s as if I’m looking for a simple image to interact with the subtle complexity of her poetry. As if images would allow me to construct a solid ground from which to hear her voice. Other truths Federico Bertolazzi

A poet is someone who lives with things, who is attentive to the Real, who knows that things exist. [...] The poet’s vision is original, free of intermediaries, pure, alive and exploratory. Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen

For Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, poetry has always been rooted in the concreteness of the real. By turning her attention to things, she aims to unveil the primordial truth of being in a context of appearing, in a process of precise naming in which beauty and truth become one. As she herself states, it is this “initial being”, this brilliance which, as our lives unfold, suspends time, or, in Sophia’s words again, the “instant which astonishes, challenges and braves eternity”. The poet thus creates the realm of “terrifying purity”, in which there is no place for lies and truth reigns, imposing its brilliance. In this process, places are the source of poetry; in them, the ebb of vastness or detail becomes language. Beaches, seas, woods, forests, cities, homes, rooms, tables are described in the voice which belongs to them, in an act of extreme purification. In the body of the landscape, Sophia experiences the confluence of immanence and transcendence, and “love of visible things” becomes a sign of the sacred, rising up as a song.

85

_Os lugares de Sophia_final.qxp:170x220 15/10/19 11:24 Page 86

In an attempt to describe this realm, in which objectivity and subjectivity constantly merge, photographers António Jorge Silva, Duarte Belo and Pedro Tropa were invited to encounter Sophia’s places with their own eyes, allowing new aspects to be revealed and other truths to be echoed by their observations.

Gaze, gazes José Manuel dos Santos

In order to talk about what we see, it is important to see what we are talking about. In our gaze, there are always words suspended like acrobats on a tightrope stretched above the arena of the world. To speak of what we see is to lend words the motion of the gaze which observes the persistent, dangerous treading and extending of the rope. If, when speaking of ‘Lugares de Sophia’, we were to adopt an easy, convenient commonplace, we would say that the exhibition displays three gazes — one from each photographer — capturing a life and a body of work in which places are present and alive as characters with form and figure, body and soul. Yet the truth diverges from this commonplace: the gazes which make up this exhibition are more numerous and less fixed and focused than the commonplace would hold. Each of the three photographers holds more gazes in their gaze than the gaze of their own gaze — and the confluence of all of these in the exhibition represents a multiplication rather than a sum total. They imply and explain one another, they multiply, intensify, add, grow, open, unfold, collude and complete each other, reflecting their intense, shifting visions on a surfaceless mirror, echoing their visual, votive voices in a dead-end tunnel. The photographers do not merely explore the places in Sophia’s life and work from a single, fixed gaze. They each observe these places with their own gaze, seeing in them Sophia’s gaze staring back at them. Each of them offers mobility, mutability, metamorphosis, multiplicity, mythification to that gaze. Each replicates the loyalty to the arrow of her thought, her drive and her skill, with another loyalty to the target of her purpose, her agenda, her ownership.

87

_Os lugares de Sophia_final.qxp:170x220 15/10/19 11:24 Page 88

And thus the artists move the pieces around the squares of the chessboard where the game of the gazes plays out, checkmating the king of darkness (“to photograph” is to write in light), daring images with their imagination (“And what we hadn’t even dared to dream / Was true”). With these imagined images, they have created imaginary worlds, utopias, dystopias and heterotopias (as Foucault would say), places in which space is heteronym of itself! For Sophia, her places represented doubt transformed into certainty, the universe brought closer, distance reduced to proximity. They were excess made moderate, the infinite made recognisable, strength converted into quivers. They were clarity made into clamour, transcendence becoming immanence and eternity transformed into imminence. And thus they conjured “surprise and wonder”, “ecstasy and panic”. Sophia’s places contain wind, sea, sun, moon, night, day, land, fire, storm, dawn, sunset, and home. There is colour, light, shadow, transparency, opacity, texture, crystallisation, freshness, dryness, hoarseness, stability, and variation. There are diversions, farewells, absences, weights, lightness, proliferations, units, and reasons. There is “the glare of the visible before your eyes”. And even the house, when certain, is a place in which the universe also lives, kindling her fervour and her ‘Magnificat’. This is described in ‘A Casa do Mar’ [The Seaside House]: “Anyone who walks from the centre room to the veranda and sees before them the beach, the sky, the sand, the light and the air realises that nothing is there by chance but rather by reason, that this is a place of exaltation and astonishment where reality emerges and shows its face and its evidence. // […] In the rise and fall of the waves, the universe orders its tumult and its smile, and, along the shiny sandy beaches, mists from the sea and fog rise up like incense at a ceremony. // And everything seems intact and complete, as if it was the place which preserved within it the naked power of the first day ever created.” In the poem ‘Cidade’ [City], Sophia’s protest focuses on what the universe prevents, denies and contradicts: “City, ceaseless noise and bus-

88

_Os lugares de Sophia_final.qxp:170x220 15/10/19 11:24 Page 89

tle of the streets / O dirty, hostile, futilely spent life / In the knowledge of the sea and virgin beaches / Nameless mountains and vaster planes / I crave the vastest space / And I am here within you and all I see / The walls and confines, and I cannot see / Neither the rise of the sea, nor the phases of the moon”. And in another poem, ‘Tejo’ [Tagus], her praise is aimed at the place from which the universe can be seen: “Here and there as we walk Lisbon’s streets / In a hurry or lost in thought / Turning the corner we suddenly see / The shimmering blues of the Tagus / And our body becomes light / Our soul is winged”. It is this that the photographs by the three photographers show of the places touched and exchanged for images of them. On the centenary of Sophia’s birth, these photographs offer a voucher for a stay at the places which were hers and which can now be ours. They represent a fiction of recovered, overlaid, opposing truths. The photographs are full of permanence, premeditation, omens, divinations, and predictions. Of visual verbs conjugated in their various tenses and modes. They are selfies taken with the universe. The words attributed by the three artists to their works are more of a sign than a slogan, more of an inscription than a caption, more of a destination than a statement. António Jorge Silva chose a verse by Sophia which speaks of the soul and of the mist from the sea forming part of it. His photographs adopt the geometry of the house, the architecture of water and the petrology of rock, which the interior imposes upon the exterior. Here, vertical lines are a humiliation of the horizontal. Pedro Tropa opts for one of the poet’s verses which describes construction as the promise of destruction. In the chiaroscuro of his images, buildings overlap with their ruins and the world is a hand covered in script (Mallarmé said that “Everything in the world exists in order to end up as a book”). Duarte Belo recalls the one time he met the poet. It was in Tomar, at a convent still full of vertices and figures of Templars — and from that memory he took Ariadne’s thread through a labyrinth of places illuminated by the light and shadow of colours. In his collection of images, it is as if his sin-

_Os lugares de Sophia_final.qxp:170x220 15/10/19 11:24 Page 90

gle encounter with Sophia were extended and carried to everything in the world that her gaze touched with the (in)tense bow of her attention. In the work of António Jorge Silva, the sea is a force which is a form which is a figure. And the house is the flagrant phantom of this. In Pedro Tropa’s work, everything speaks of time transformed into space, spirit converted into body, logos made eikon, physis in its aletheia. In Duarte Belo’s work, a dictionary of images — topoi — is used, in which the shadows of Pascoaes and Pessoa, the Master of Communion and the Master of Excommunication, pass as a sign of luck or misfortune. All of the works by the three artists are characterised by the virtue mentioned by Proust in ‘In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower’, whereby photography “ceases to be a reproduction of reality and shows us things that no longer exist”. It is important to add: which no longer exist, even when they do! Photography is thus always past life and future memory, and to it belongs the time of traces transformed into aura, loss converted into gain, and defeat made into victory. On the map of this exhibition, paths split off, roads diverge, streets converge, lanes reconnect. When our gaze brings photographs together, we see agreements and disputes, slowing and speeding, acceleration and braking, front and back, obverse and reverse. As well as Sophia and her lived work, what links the photographs on display in this exhibition is that which she describes in one of her ‘Histórias da Terra e do Mar’ [Stories of Land and Sea]: “From the order and silence of the universe arose an infinite freedom. She breathed in that freedom, which governed her life and fuelled her being. // The peace surrounding her was open and transparent. // The shape of things was writing and script. A script she didn’t understand, but which she recognised”. Like her, with her, we recognise these images, as if they had been written in the script of our gaze.
