Before he started practising meditation, a Chinese Taoist master believed that mountains were just mountains. Later, he discovered that mountains were actually not mountains. And finally, after a long period of study, he stopped caring about the matter and the mountains went back to being mountains.

To paint is to remove nearly everything that was added and to put back nearly everything that was taken out. A painting can conceal itself inside another painting. Or behind it. Programa: fazer pinturas inacabadas (inacabáveis), em fuga. Por onde começar, pelo fim? Programme: to make unfinished (unfinishable) paintings, paintings in flight. Where should we start? At the end? Programa: fazer pinturas-cápsula, pinturas-mónada, esferas autónomas. Caramanchões de marfim. Programme: to make capsule-paintings, monad-paintings, autonomous spheres. Ivory pergolas. A pintura é animista, mágica, fetichista. É um resgate. Because it captures the fleeting moment, photography becomes connected with death, a morbid pursuit. Painting is animistic, magical, fetishistic. It is a redemption.

The shadow can certainly provide a shelter, protect a secret place. But mirrored or glossy surfaces, by bouncing off, multiplying and reflecting the images, which find no shelter in them, can also provide a camouflage, a protection against Medusa.
