Faz parte: as pessoas nascem, casam, morrem.

ANOTHER WAY TO SAY IT
The sky and the sea have no need for people anymore. The moon has fallen, but nobody noticed. Indifferent to birds, Webern and Messiaen conferred. An anonymous, elusive harness was searching for my name. This sudden spider must have listened to Bach. An iron curtain almost excused the light. A faceless cloth was weeping. There was that shadowy ring, between the windows. And a black sun, shining

A SUNNY DAY — ALMOST BLACK
“A clean gaze everything/ that won’t die/ with us” — it was this poem by João Miguel Fernandes Jorge that crossed my mind, this afternoon, upon entering the first sculpture by Rui Chafes, which is called, precisely, “First Gaze”. Through the several orifices in that conical structure, the trees and the sea are all we can see — everything that won’t die? —, making it impossible to discern the buildings that throughout the decades have steadily disfigured the Caparica coastline. We may understand this sculpture as a prayer, between land and sea, ruling out the human stain that to varying degrees would later come to taint the landscape. Nevertheless, it has the unassuming appearance of a military sentry box, where for a few minutes or a lifetime we are allowed to play as the ephemeral toy soldiers that we truly are in this depleted land. As we step in and out of it, the world is no longer the same. * Before we entered the convent, we saw the “Exhausted Moon”, leaning, suspended, by a tree that looks almost like a bonsai. By coincidence, just two days ago I offered Inês our first bonsai, an apple tree still in bloom. But in art, just as in life, “coincidence” is the name we give to something bigger than us, obscure, overwhelming. I know the name of the sculp-

ture, a moon weary of lighting up the nights, but not the name of the tree that grows beneath it. My father, who was an agronomist, would certainly be able to identify it. As we drove across the bridge on our way back to Lisbon, Rui told me his eldest son was attending the same school where my father graduated in Agronomy (he had sold the few plots of land he owned, in Madeira, to devote all his life to trees). * In the exhibition room, Summer and Winter confer openly, materializing (or defying each other?) in two wavy structures that complete one another and possess the steadfast nobility of medieval armours. They could have been inspired by Webern, that master of concision, but the birds — we could only hear them, in that totally closed room — seemed to be more interested in Messiaen. Somewhat evading the “truth” offered by the artist, I found myself trying to imagine a dialogue or a duel (the difference, by the way, is slight) between two of the 20th-century’s greatest composers. * Inside the cloister, “Balthazar” sounded familiar, for some unaccountable reason. Then I understood why: it was a reference to the harnesses in a film by Bresson which I never saw. But I did see countless times, during my childhood in Ribatejo, the harnesses used for mules, mares and horses. However, all

that was now transfiguring into a blur, wherein iron and shadow become inseparable. Again, I recalled a very short poem by João Miguel Fernandes Jorge: “Send out your shadow.” It becomes almost undecidable to know this sculpture’s “truth”, as it changes so deeply depending on whether there is sunlight or not. In any case, it reminds us of the utter evidence that shadow is a consequence of light. * Or vice versa, for nothing is as simple as that — not even in a material world, devoid of men. I’m thinking now of “Whisper”, and here to think may be the most inaccurate of verbs. You can make art, believe in it, admire it intensely, without the need to explain or justify it in theoretical terms. Even if there is, on the part of the artist, a previous thought, some kind of intention, theory, in art, is always posthumous and arbitrary. In any case, no concept helps when we come upon the iron curtain with which Rui Chafes hid or revealed, at the top of a staircase, a small and radiant window. The play of light is, once again, determinant, and “Whisper” would be a totally different sculpture if the sky was cloudy today. At 5 o’clock in the afternoon, the light from the little window seemed to pierce through the dense iron curtain, making it almost translucent, especially at the lower end. There’s a line by Jorge de Sena that I always thought a bit overrated: “A little flickering light”. After all, that light exists, flickering unsteadily at the top of that staircase, which has rungs, just like we do.

* We had a small setback during our visit: there was a wedding service in the chapel. It’s predictable: people are born, they marry, they die. It’s very difficult to interrupt the human, especially on Saturdays. Therefore, I could hardly throw a sideways glance at “Murmur”, under the disapproving stare of a rather grim-faced priest. It was on the wall to the right of the altar, this sculpture, as a most discreet Veronica. But, if I saw it correctly, there was only the cloth’s halted movement, with no hint of a face to allow the evocation, possibly excessive, of Veronica. A shroud, in short, but one that doesn’t need to be holy in order to exist. In the choir, a sober and majestic piece (“Darkening”) glares at us, implacable. But I could only catch a glimpse of it, off-centred, as the lukewarm ceremony went on. * We gave up waiting for the wedding mass to end, and went back to the convent’s gardens, where a black sun awaited us, hanging from a tree branch (“The Misanthrope”), and a subtle yet grandiose ring was nested in the church’s wall, between two austere windows (“All This”). It was thus completed, the cycle of Everything is Something Else. What this exhibition has taught me pertains, undoubtedly, to a deep notion of humbleness and an utter respect for the sacred and natural spaces where Rui Chafes’ sculptures happen. I have felt as much in other exhibitions of his work, in other places, such as Igreja

de São Cristóvão or Jardim da Sereia (where our names, his and mine, had crossed paths by chance many years before we met). But I don’t believe in chance, to be honest. About ten years ago, a friend of mine asked me if I wanted Rui’s cell phone number. I said no; if we had to meet, this would happen naturally, with neither of us making any attempt to contact the other. And so it was. And so it has always been, I believe, in this depleted land, where so many of our true contemporaries are long dead — but revive in us, through our gestures, words, metal syllables, silences. * We have little time, as is known. I’ll probably never return to Convento dos Capuchos in Caparica. It was a sunny day. And it would be redundant to say it was an unrepeatable or unforgettable day, although quite plainly true. Truth itself, too, is an extremely fragile thing. You can see it, but you probably can’t prove it. Just as you can’t scientifically demonstrate that light goes through iron (but it does), or that there were only the sea and the trees waiting for our gaze, as the iron sung. But this is how it was, today. Manuel de Freitas Lisbon, May 4th, 2019
