Students Sharpen Articulation Skills Eight Art and Design students recently visited the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool to take part in Articulation training - a National Gallery programme designed to help young people develop vital skills in oracy, independent research, and presentation, using art as a springboard.

Urban Explorers Back in October, our talented Year 12 Photography students swapped the classroom for the vibrant streets of Manchester. The city provided the perfect backdrop for an inspiring day of creativity and exploration. The trip was designed to support their environment portfolio project, giving students the chance to practise technical camera skills while experimenting with composition, lighting, and perspective in a real-world setting. We can’t wait to see the incredible images that they produce.

Black History Month Now in its fourth year, the college’s annual Show Racism the Red Card day brought students and staff together in a powerful display of unity, by wearing red to stand against racism. The event concluded Black History Month, highlighting the strength of solidarity and the importance of inclusion. This year’s theme, Standing Firm in Power and Pride, paid tribute to the resilience, strength, and unwavering commitment to progress that defines the Black community across
the globe.Throughout the month, students reflected on the theme during Personal Development sessions, while subject lessons highlighted the contributions of black people to their respective fields. We also embraced arts and culture, with special menus in the cafeteria and music by black artists played at the start of each day - creating an atmosphere of celebration and learning.
Diplomacy in Action Students recently represented Sir John Deane's at the Model United Nations event hosted by Cheadle Hulme School. Acting as delegates for Iraq and Brazil, they tackled a wide range of global issues from American interventionism to the challenge of stolen art. They worked as committees focused on politics, economics, law, art, human rights and ethics. Their hard work and dedication paid off, earning them a Certificate of Special Mention and two Certificates of Commendation. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and the professionalism they demonstrated throughout the competition.

Music & Performing Arts Talented musicians took centre stage at the college’s much-anticipated annual Musical Soirée in November. Guests were treated to a diverse programme of solo and ensemble performances, ranging from timeless classics such as Humoresque by W.H. Squire to a bold rendition of heavy metal favourite Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne. The evening also featured exceptional performances from Year 13 A level Music students, each demonstrating individual flair and technical skill as they prepare for their final recital assessments in March. Hannah Thomas, Director of Music at the college, said: "As always our
Musical Soirée delivers the highest calibre of musical performance. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported our young musicians. Your encouragement makes these events truly special." The Soirée marked the first in an exciting line-up of music and performing arts events for the 2025/26 academic year. Upcoming highlights include the traditional Spirit of Christmas Concert, Jazz Night, Battle of the Bands, Performing Arts Showcase and this year's theatre production Comedy of Errors. Spotlight on Careers The careers programme has kicked off the academic year with an impressive line-up of industry experts. Each Wednesday this term, hundreds of students have embraced the opportunity to hear from some of the UK's leading organistations as part of the 'Spotlight' sessions. So far, the college has welcomed representatives from BBC, Barclays, DJH Accountancy, MBDA Missile Systems, MMU Fashion/Retail, Unilever, Rolls Royce, Civil Service, Marine AI, Airbus, FGP Surveyors, and Myerson Solicitors. Speakers offered practical advice on applications and employability, alongside insights into internships, industrial placements, apprenticeships and graduate schemes. Many were former students, adding a personal touch to the sessions and proving that the journey from classroom to career is achievable. Apprenticeship and Employment Programme Year 13 students also benefited from the launch of the Apprenticeship and Employment Programme (AEP). The four-part workshops provided a deep dive into apprenticeship levels, structures and resources, equipping students with the tools to take confident next steps. The sessions concluded in a Mock Assessment Centre, where students tackled group tasks, delivered presentations, and faced real interviews with industry professionals. Looking ahead, the spotlight turns to the Industry Careers Fair on Friday 6th March 2026, part of National Careers Week. Parents will receive the full careers calendar at the start of next term.
Cambridge Chemistry Challenge Budding young chemists have been recognised for their scientific skills in the prestigious Cambridge Chemistry Challenge, after achieving outstanding results. Grace Ennes-Borlace, Ho Yau Lau, Lester Gledhill, Maisie Ellis, Megan Croxton, and Rhys Dunkerley were awarded Gold certificates with a further 22 securing Silver and 31 achieving Copper, reflecting the enthusiasm and knowledge of the subject beyond the A level specification. The competition is designed to stretch and inspire the most talented chemistry students across the UK. It tests problem-solving skills and deep understanding of chemical principles beyond the standard curriculum, making success in this challenge a remarkable achievement.

Trips and visits
Duke of Edinburgh's Award October was an exciting month for our students as they embraced the challenge of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expeditions. More than 100 students headed to North Wales for their practice expedition, putting their camping and navigation skills to the test. Over three days, they enjoyed short night walks and a full day trek from Llangollen, building confidence and teamwork along the way. The qualifying expedition saw 36 determined students venture into the Peak District, tackling the route from Tegg’s Nose to Rudyard. Their resilience and preparation paid off, with every participant successfully completing the challenge. These expeditions are a fantastic opportunity for students to develop independence, problem-solving skills, and a love for the outdoors. Congratulations to all involved for their hard work and achievement.
Young leaders learn art of debate In November, the college welcomed Year 11 student leaders from Bridgewater High School to learn more about the art of debate. They took part in an inspiring and lively session with our Debate Society, starting with a workshop covering the skills required before splitting into two teams to tackle the topic: “Should voting be mandatory?” The visit also included an engaging Q&A with our Head Students, giving them a real insight into life at Sir John Deane’s and helping them prepare for their next steps. Their enthusiasm and energy throughout the day were fantastic – it was a pleasure to see such passion for learning and leadership.

Reflections from Auschwitz Students Edem Amesu and Ksenia Protopopova recently took part in a visit to Auschwitz, organised by the charity Lessons from Auschwitz. They joined 160 students from across the North West for this powerful experience, designed to develop their historical understanding of the Holocaust and consider its relevance today. The visit began with a guided tour of Auschwitz, where students learned about the harrowing history of the camp and the lives of those who suffered there. In the afternoon, the group visited Birkenau, the largest of the Auschwitz camps. The visit concluded with a poignant memorial service at the crematorium, led by a Rabbi who accompanied the group. As part of the programme, each student selected a name from the Book of Names, a record of those who perished at Auschwitz, and committed to researching that individual’s story. This personal connection aims to bring humanity to the statistics and deepen understanding of the Holocaust’s impact. Following the trip, students will attend a series of seminars and create a project of their choice to reflect on their experience and share the lessons learned with others.
Chester Zoo Business students recently enjoyed a trip to Chester Zoo, designed to bring their classroom learning to life. Students were able to experience first-hand the operations of a major organisation and how its charity status influences goals, governance and decision making processes. It also allowed them discover more about how it plans and executes its marketing activities in a live setting - a key component of the exam. The day was a fantastic opportunity for students to see business concepts in action, preparing them for upcoming assignments and exams with practical knowledge and inspiration.
Formby Beach Back in October, Year 12 Geography students embarked on a field trip to Formby to put their classroom learning into practice. The visit was designed to help students develop their physical geography data collection skills while investigating coastal processes in action. Armed with clipboards and measuring equipment, the students observed and recorded key features of the coastline. Activities included counting waves and measuring wave height to understand how these factors influence coastal erosion and deposition.

Sir John Deane’s Girls Shine at National Cross Country Finals Sir John Deane’s stormed the national stage, delivering an outstanding performance at the England Schools Athletics Association Cross Country Finals. Competing against the best in the country, the girls Cross Country team secured an impressive second place overall – and proudly claimed the title of top state school, down from an initial field of 215 teams. They finished only behind Guildford High School, a Surrey-based independent school renowned for its sporting pedigree.
Jenny Thorp, Head of PE and Sport at the college, said: “I couldn’t be prouder of this team. To finish second overall against such a strong field and to be the top state school is a phenomenal achievement. Every runner gave their all, and their commitment and resilience really shone through. This result is a testament to the incredible work being done by the athletic clubs in the area and the fantastic support from everyone involved”
The event, held at Princethorpe College in Warwickshire in December, featured a fiercely competitive field, including the U18 European 3k champion and many of the country’s top U18 cross-country runners. Against this elite line-up, Sir John Deane’s athletes rose to the challenge and delivered exceptional individual performances, with the points accumulation from the top four runners determining the overall positioning. Eva Jha, 9th, Esme Heavey, 12th, Hayley Holland, 45th Holly Coates, 51st. Two non-scorers also made their mark Eva Mion, 59th, Chloe Taylor – 129th. This incredible result reflects the dedication, talent, and teamwork of the athletes and their coaches, cementing Sir John Deane’s growing reputation in school athletics.
College sports round up: Champions on the rise From the netball court to the swimming pool, our athletes are making waves and breaking boundaries. This season is shaping up to be one of our most exciting yet, with teams across the board showing incredible determination, skill, and passion. Here’s a look at the latest highlights from our sporting stars: Netball As reigning champions of Division 1 and Division 2 in the North West Colleges League, they’ve now set their sights on a third appearance at the England Netball National Schools Finals. After winning all their matches in the Cheshire round in November, confidence is high for another stellar performance Football Building on last year’s incredible success, our Women’s Football Team is determined to retain their league title. With hard work and dedication, they’re ready to make this season another one to remember. The Men’s Football Team has kicked off the season strong in the fiercely competitive North West Colleges League. Their energy and teamwork promise exciting results ahead!

Rugby Our Men’s Rugby Team, reigning champions of the North West Colleges League, continue to impress. They recently secured a fantastic win against Cardinal Newman – a clear sign they’re not slowing down anytime soon. Last year marked a historic moment as our Women’s Rugby Team played the first-ever women’s fixtures in the college’s history. Their trailblazing efforts have paved the way for new players and created a lasting legacy for future generations. Basketball Facing tough competition in the North West Colleges League, our Basketball Team is determined to build momentum. They recently celebrated their first win of the season against Riverside College – a brilliant achievement that sets the tone for what’s to come! Swimming Our Men’s and Women’s Swim Teams recently competed in the ESSA National Finals at Sandwell Aquatic Centre, going head-to-head with the top schools and colleges in the country. The Women’s Team delivered an outstanding performance, finishing 7th overall.
