Welcome to Arley Hall, one of Cheshire’s finest historic houses, for a special evening of classical music. As one of the UK’s leading Sixth Form Colleges, Sir John Deane’s has a thriving music department and we are always delighted to share the incredible talents and successes of our students. This evening’s programme includes recitals from seven of our most gifted young musicians who will each perform their chosen repertoire of music from some of the greatest classical composers including Mozart, Vaughan-Williams and Brahms. I’d especially like to welcome some of our new students who have chosen to study music at Sir John Deane’s. Jennifer, Mia, Heaven-Leigh, Olivia, Abigail, Isabel and Hannah have all taken the opportunity to come along tonight to meet our teachers and performers before they begin their own studies with us in September. Caitlin Sherwood, Violin Caitlin has been playing violin since the age of 6, when in her primary school the violin teacher played to all the pupils in assembly, and from that moment she decided that violin was what she wanted to do. She attended Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School, where she played in the orchestra and various string ensembles. She is currently taught by Sylvia More, with whom she achieved her grade 8. She is the joint leader of Cheshire Youth Orchestra and plays in various music groups, reaffirming Caitlin’s wish that after she completes her degree in music she will become a music teacher, aiming to inspire other children in the way that she was inspired. When not taking part in orchestral playing, she enjoys playing fiddle in the Usquebaugh Ceilidh band. She also enjoys playing traditional Irish Folk music with Ceolta, with which she supported Ade Edmondson and the Bad Shepherds. Caitlin has performed every year at the Cheshire Show, as well as many other gigs, with Jeepers Jazz Band, in which she plays some StÊphane Grappelli pieces. Over the past two years she has played violin in many show orchestras, including Les Miserables, Wind in the Willows and the college`s production of Guys and Dolls. Caitlin loves every aspect of music and always takes every opportunity given to her, striving to achieve it to the best of her ability. Laura Edwards, Soprano Laura has always been a keen and dedicated singer. She has sung throughout her school (Alsager) and college life in choirs and competitions. She has had singing lessons from the age of nine and has enjoyed singing in charity concerts and other musical performances arranged through her teacher. In 2014 Laura took the initiative and organised her own charity concert, joined by friends and family, where she also played the clarinet in addition to singing. One of the pieces that proved particularly popular with the audience was Piu Jesu. Laura plans to go to university to study Occupational Therapy but, despite her career decision, she definitely plans to continue to sing as often as she can.
Thomas Rocke, French Horn Tom started with the Piano age five, and picked up the Trumpet at age seven. He then swapped trumpet for horn before rising up the ranks at the County High School, Leftwich. Currently, he holds Grade 8 Distinction in Horn and Piano, and is studying Music, Maths, Further Maths, and Physics at college. Tom is a regular member of the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, the Junior RNCM music school, and has worked with the National Youth Orchestra’s Inspire project, including the first ever Inspire Orchestra. He also performs regularly in local ensembles, including the North Cheshire Wind Orchestra, and the college’s own Jazz and Concert bands. Robert Anderson, Tenor Robert started singing when he was 8 years old when his mum sent him to an audition for Chester Cathedral Choir. He was successful in receiving a place and continued to sing as a chorister for 5 years finishing his last couple of years as a leading chorister. He attended Abbey Gate College where he held the choral scholarship and sang with the chapel choir. Robert is a member of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and the age of 16 he started at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music where he is under the tuition of Jeffery Lawton (Convent Garden). He attends their Saturday school where he also sings with the choir. Singing for Robert is a way of improving his confidence both on the stage and off, and it has allowed him to meet and work with some amazing, like-minded people. Since attending Sir John Deane’s College he has had many opportunities thrown at him, from classical concerts to singing with the jazz band. Robert is going on to study Graphic Design at University but will ensure that he carries on with his music.
Seth Hamil, Bass Trombone Seth started playing tenor trombone when he was 7 years old. He originally told his parents that he wanted to play the tuba but then changed his mind to trombone. Seth started lessons with his current teacher, Tom Wyss, and soon after joined the Warrington Youth Orchestra, which he is still a part of today. At Lymm High School he was part of many ensembles including the brass band, and in year 10 he switched to the bass trombone which he now much prefer to the tenor. What Seth enjoys the most is performing, whether in ensembles or solo. At college he belongs to the SJD Jazz Band, and very much enjoyed performing in the Guys and Dolls band. Over the past few years he has performed in Italy, France and sung at the Royal Albert Hall. After college Seth would like to continue improving as a bass trombonist and a singer but career-wise he would like to train to be an electronic engineer.
Jessica Mitchell, Alto Saxophone Jess started the saxophone at the age of 8 and later also learnt to play the flute and piano. She previously went to Malbank High School. Jess has played in numerous concerts with Sir John Deane’s including The Young Musicians Concert with Holmes Chapel Music Society and as part of a trio, playing the piano, at Youth Makes Music. She studied at the junior school at the Royal Northern College of Music, where she took lessons and played in ensembles. After college, she is hoping to take up her offer to read chemistry at Oxford University, where she intends to continue playing music.
Marcus Reynolds, Piano Marcus has been playing the piano since the age of 6 and has always had a great love for the instrument, passing his grade 8 with a high distinction in 2011. He enjoys the challenge of performing and has taken part in many festivals and competitions and regularly performs in concerts across Cheshire. Marcus attended Bishops Blue Coat School Chester and joined the Junior school at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2012, where he studies piano with John Gough. In September last year he was awarded the Fergal O’Mahoney keyboard prize. He loves listening to and playing different types of jazz and he shares his love of music with a passion for science; he is currently studying A levels in Music, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
