Brookings Summer Arts Festival: 55 YEARS STRONG

Celebrating 55 years, the Brookings Summer Arts Festival (BSAF) returns to Pioneer Park on July 11 and 12, 2026, continuing a tradition few festivals nationwide can claim. Proudly known as the Finest Two-Day Art Festival in South Dakota, BSAF showcases the very best of art, food, music, history, and community—made possible by an extraordinary team of volunteers.

BSAF is powered by an all-volunteer committee of approximately 30 community members, supported by four executive staff and a five-member board. From October through June, these dedicated volunteers meet monthly to jury artists and food vendors, plan logistics, and manage the many details that bring the festival together. During festival week and weekend, an additional 60 to 70 volunteers step in— marking booth spaces, setting up tents and signage, staffing information booths, delivering water to artists, assisting with hospitality, and directing parking.

Volunteers come from all walks of life—retirees, professionals, city employees, artists, educators, National Guard members, and longtime supporters. One shining example is Dave Huebner, a BSAF co-founder, committee member, and pottery artist who has participated for all 55 years. Living history and reenactor groups, including the Brookings Renegade Muzzleloaders and Silver Creek Mavericks, also return annually to help manage vendor and accessible parking, keeping things running smoothly. What visitors experience is the result of that dedication.

Of course, the festival experience itself is what draws thousands of visitors. This year’s festival includes 175 juried art booths representing around 15 states and 15 art categories, including 30 new artists selected this year; 38 gourmet and ethnic food booths; 30 artisan food and naturals booths; 10 antique booths; 15 living history booths that honor South Dakota’s heritage arts; and approximately 10 children’s area booths, featuring make-and-take art, balloons, henna, and a private nursing and diaper-changing space. Entertainment fills the park across three stages— the historic Bandshell, the Prairie Stage, and the Variety Stage—offering music and performances for all ages. (Festival planners work intentionally to limit duplicate food offerings, creating an unmatched variety of choices.)

Artists love BSAF for the same reason patrons do— the chance to connect. Many artists demonstrate their craft on site, carving, painting, sketching, silversmithing, and answering questions for curious kids and adults alike. Visitors are encouraged to meet the artists, ask about their creative process, and see demonstrations happening throughout the park. Have a favorite artist? Ask what new pieces they’ve brought—you might be delighted to discover they have that perfect new work just for you.

Festival hours are Saturday, 10 a.m.–7 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Admission is free. Shuttle buses run continuously from the South Dakota Ag Heritage Museum. Make the most of your visit by strolling to downtown Brookings, just three blocks away, where locally owned shops and restaurants add even more to your festival experience.

After 55 years, BSAF remains a celebration of creativity, community, and the volunteers who make it all possible. n

On view through October 11

COUPLES CONNECTION:

AT THE

Why the Best Dates Happen Fair

From first dates to forever, South Dakota county fairs and festivals are the space for real connection

In South Dakota, summer doesn’t truly arrive until the fairgrounds glow at dusk and the smell of something fried drifts through the air. From county fairs tucked into small towns to weekend festivals scattered across the state, these gatherings have a way of slowing life down—and drawing people a little closer together.

There’s something charming about South Dakota fairs and festivals. It might be the rows of vendor booths filled with handcrafted goods, the impressive barns showcasing hours of 4-H dedication, or kids darting between rides as laughter floats across the grounds. Neighbors greet one another like old friends, and even first-time visitors quickly feel like they belong. That shared sense of welcome makes everyone—locals and outsiders alike—feel part of the community the

moment they step through the gates. For a couple on a date night, it’s the kind of place that takes the pressure off—no reservations, no dress code, just real life happening right where you are.

Whether it’s a first date or you’ve been married for years, fairs make conversation easy. You’re not stuck across a table wondering what to say; you’re wandering instead. You debate which exhibit should have earned the blue ribbon, laugh at missed shots at the ring toss, or share a funnel cake as the carnival lights flicker around you. Those shared experiences fill the silences spontaneously.

One of the best elements of a Fair Date is the variety it offers. You can start the evening with classic fair food or whatever local favorite catches your eye. Then head toward the rides for a little adventure. The zipper might

have you both laughing and screaming, while the Ferris wheel gives you a quiet, romantic moment. If you’re in the mood for something more relaxed, there’s often live music or a dance area where you can simply slow down and enjoy being together.

Many fairs and festivals also feature live entertainment that carries the fun well into the evening. A local band might play a familiar tune, or an unexpected headliner might take the main stage under open skies. Sitting shoulder to shoulder on bleachers or dancing barefoot in the grass feels wonderfully uncomplicated—and surprisingly memorable.

If music isn’t your thing, fairs still have plenty to offer. Rodeos, demolition derbies, and uniquely local events reflect the traditions of each town. Every fair has its own personality, shaped by the people who call it home.

That flexibility makes South Dakota fairs perfect for both new couples and longtime partners. They spark nostalgia, creating space to share stories and build deeper connections.

In a world that rushes us along, fairs and festivals invite us to linger. To laugh easily. To connect. And sometimes, to fall just a little more in love. n

TRAVELING INTENTIONALLY:

SKIP THE RUSH, MAKE MORE

Have you ever come home from a trip and thought, “Wow, I need a vacation?” You spent the entire time racing from one bucket list attraction to the next, and switched hotels every 48 hours. The exhaustion of a checklist-style vacation leaves you needing a second getaway just to relax and recover from the first. This is vacation burnout.

That’s where intentional travel comes in: a simple shift in how you travel. This allows you to truly relax while on vacation, even if you’re not spending your PTO sipping Mai Tais on the beach. You won’t be doing nothing - you’ll just be doing less, on purpose.

First, pick one destination for your entire vacation. The goal is to live like a local for the duration of your stay. You want to stop and smell the roses rather than packing your itinerary with too much, so you can discover cultural nuances you’d otherwise miss from the window of a tour bus.

By choosing a centrally located hotel, you will reduce your daily transit time. This gives you more time to wander while exploring and to find a rhythm. You might even return to the same cafe twice!

A good location also allows for slow moments like browsing at a local market or enjoying your morning mocha on a park bench without the pressure of a ticking watch. One of

Memories

the easiest ways to get these moments is to simplify your itinerary. Give yourself permission to do less.

After narrowing down your priority activities for the trip, pick just one major activity to do per day. The rest of the day is spent exploring leisurely. No strict agenda. No rush. And no color-coded spreadsheet of activities to mark off.

Exploring a neighborhood deeper does more than just help you relax; you’re also supporting small, family-owned businesses and giving back to the community you’re visiting. Trading crowded tourist traps for neighborhood gems will give you more meaningful connections, rather than a series of cold transactions at ticket booths.

You’ll spend more time actually making memories with your family, and less time managing logistics. Being present with your loved ones is the greatest gift you can give them, especially when visiting a new place. Fewer plans also mean fewer meltdowns - for everyone.

Intentional travel allows you enough time not only to see a destination, but also to understand it and feel a connection to it. Instead of just a bunch of photos you don’t remember, you’ll have memories with more meaning. When you allow yourself to slow down on vacation, you’ll return home feeling truly rested - and like your time away actually mattered. n

I WILL NEVER PUT MY

KIDS THROUGH THIS

You’re sitting in the parking lot of the assisted living facility, not quite ready to turn the car on.

You just spent the last two hours helping your mom sort through paperwork no one fully understands. Accounts in different places. Decisions that were never clearly documented. Questions that don’t have easy answers.

It shouldn’t have been this hard. And you think to yourself, “I will never put my kids through this.”

If You Don’t Act, Here’s What Happens

You’ve done a lot right. You’ve saved. You’ve been careful. But when you got home and opened your own files, you realized your kids would be sitting in that same parking lot someday, dealing with the same chaos.

What you’re seeing with your parents isn’t unusual. Multiple statements. Multiple accounts. Pieces that made sense at one point but don’t fit your life today. It’s what happens when good decisions are made over time but never fully coordinated into a clear plan.

Left alone, that pattern doesn’t fix itself. It carries forward. And when it does, your kids won’t just inherit your accounts. They’ll inherit the stress, the confusion, and the guilt of wondering if they missed something important.

What It Looks Like When You Keep That Promise

Organization isn’t a spreadsheet. It’s relief.

It means:

• Your kids won’t have to search through files wondering what account goes where or why you had three different advisors.

• You won’t lie awake wondering if you positioned everything right or if you’re leaving a mess behind.

• No one will have to guess what you wanted because it’s all documented and clear.

• Your plan will actually match the life you’re living now, not the one you were planning ten years ago.

It’s also about alignment. Your investments, your timeline, your tax strategy, and your income plan working together so you have the flexibility to travel, support the causes you care about, and stay connected to your community.

And just as important, knowing your kids won’t have to step in and figure it out on their own.

Jill Mollner, Wealth Manager at Cornerstone Financial Solutions, sees this turning point often. “Confidence doesn’t come from having all the answers upfront,” she says. “It comes from working through it and understanding how everything fits together.”

BANGS:

TO BANG OR NOT TO BANG?

The Million Dollar Question

Deciding to get bangs is no small decision. You’re weighing hair texture, face shape, lifestyle, and – frankly – your tolerance for daily maintenance. Yes, bangs can deliver that trendy, youthful, “I-just-woke-up-looking-likethis” attitude. However, they also require regular trims (usually every 3 weeks) and some daily styling devotion. It’s a high-reward, mediummaintenance move…and absolutely worth it when done right.

So why consider bangs this year? They’re an age-defying, face-framing, style-elevating power move – small in size, huge in impact. They’re like the Swiss Army knife of hair – tiny, mighty, and surprisingly versatile.

Bangs?

The Advantages:

INSTANT AGE-SOFTENING. Bangs soften expression lines, mask forehead creases, and create a face frame. They add movement and softness that reads fresh at age 20, 40, 50, and beyond.

HIGHLIGHT YOUR CHEEKBONES. Want to balance a longer face? Add dimension to a rounder one? Bangs contour naturally, creating shape and symmetry without the use of a makeup brush. Whether you opt for blunt bangs, fringe, or wispy tendrils, they sculpt and enhance whichever feature you want to play up, giving your face a subtle, flattering lift.

Bangs?

ADD STYLE WHILE GROWING OUT YOUR HAIR. Growing out layers or color? Dealing with awkward in-between lengths? A curtain of bangs creates a focal point that disguises the transition,  instantly making your hairstyle look more polished.

EYE-EMPHASIZING MAGIC. Curly, coily, wavy, or sleek as glass – there’s a bang style that plays beautifully with every hair texture. The secret is blending bangs into your natural pattern, so the whole look works together. The payoff? Your eyes become the star of the show.

BALANCE THINNING HAIR. Bangs can camouflage sparse or receding spots to create the illusion of fuller volume. They add movement, lift, and a thicker look to fine hair without requiring a drastic change.

LOW-RISK, HIGH-IMPACT. You don’t need a full overhaul to create a transformation. Bangs alone can deliver a total makeover effect. It’s a commitment, sure – but a reversible one.

SO TAKE THE PLUNGE. Bangs aren’t just fun; they’re pure personality. One snip, and suddenly you’re playful, polished, a touch Parisian, or softly romantic. The magic is in the transformation: a whole new look without a major cut. And honestly, every woman deserves a little reinvention now and then-- even if it’s just a subtle shift that makes her feel brand new! n

CAN YOU LOOK SEXY IN SWEATPANTS?

HERE'S HOW...

Once upon a time, sweatpants were reserved for the gym, sick days, or weekends at home. But now? They’ve evolved. Sweatpants today are the staple for women who crave comfort and fashion – women who want to appear as if they tried, but not in a “spent three hours getting ready” way. That level of ambition is for people with more sleep!

So, can you look good in sweatpants –even glam? Even hot? Yes. Looking sexy in sweats isn’t just possible; it’s one of fashion’s most powerful trends. It says, I’m comfy, I’m confident, and yes, I still look incredible. Here’s how to turn soft sweatpants into soft power.

SEXY STARTS WITH A SILHOUETTE.

Look for flattering fits that create long, clean lines – not too baggy, not too clingy. Medium or high-waisted sweatpants define your waist and elongate your legs, while structured fabrics smooth everything out, making the look feel intentional.

CONTRAST IS YOUR SECRET WEAPON.

Pair your cozy sweat bottoms with a top that brings the heat: a fitted tank or tee that shows off your shape, a cropped sweatshirt that flashes just enough waist, or an off-the-shoulder number that looks effortless and a little dangerous – the kind of vibe that whispers, “oh, this old thing?”

CHEAT WITH OUTERWEAR.

Want instant cool? Dress up your sweats by throwing on great outerwear. A leather jacket brings the bite; a long, slim coat adds that slow-burn sophistication. One layer, and suddenly the whole look smolders -  like you meant every inch of it.

SHOES CAN BE SHOWSTOPPERS.

Footwear can transform the entire feel. Sleek white sneakers give you a clean, street-style chic. Chunky sneakers give you sporty, confident energy. Heeled boots (yes, with sweats!) say, “model off duty”. Shoes are the difference between “running errands” and “running away with the show”.

ADD ONE DAZZLER DETAIL.

Just one. A soft, loose up-do, gold dangly earrings, bold red lipstick, and a tiny designer bag. That single elevated touch announces that your look is intentional – that this is fashion, not laundry day. So add a little sparkle here, a glossy moment there. That tiny touch turns sweats from casual to steamy siren.

In the End, Confidence is the Real Sexy. Sexy in sweatpants is half style, half attitude. Rock it, walk it, wear it like you mean to. You chose this look. Own it like temptation was the whole point. n

RecipesRecipes FOR BRAIN HEALTH

These recipes feature nutrient-dense foods commonly associated with supporting brain health, including fish, leafy greens, berries, olive oil, eggs, nuts, and cruciferous vegetables. These foods have been shown to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, believed to be key contributors to cognitive decline.

For example, salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids; leafy greens are packed with folate, vitamin K, and lutein; polyphenols and healthy fats in extra virgin olive oil offer neuroprotection; and whole grains provide a steady, slow-release supply of glucose, which acts as the primary fuel for brain cells, avoiding energy crashes.

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO Sourdough Sourdough

The latest, and perhaps most delicious, baking trend is sourdough. Everyone seems to be on this journey, making bread, cookies, pastries, and even pasta from scratch. While sourdough is the current hot trend, not everyone is ready to jump on the bandwagon because it requires dedicated patience and practice. To begin this adventure in baking, you need a starter, which is arguably the most difficult and laborious part of living out your sourdough fantasies.

STARTERS USE LIVE, suitable bacteria from yeasts in their environment, the baker’s hands, and from the grain itself to create organic acids that help put the “sour” in sourdough. There are several ways to acquire a starter. If you have a friend or relative who introduced you to sourdough, just ask them for some of their starter and how they maintain it! Thanks to modern-day technology, you can even order a starter online from other bakers. Or, if you want to completely start from scratch, you can make your own!

Once you have a starter, you will need to continuously maintain it by feeding it to keep it alive, discarding some (perhaps bake a delicious recipe with the starter discard, and not waste any precious starter!), and of course, making dough. This starter maintenance is no joke and can so easily become

a mess if something goes wrong. That is why I asked two of my friends, Megan and Taylor, for their favorite tips to guide sourdough beginners along their journey.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I LEARNED: follow every detail perfectly while baking sourdough. It is essential to weigh out each ingredient down to the gram, so it is highly recommended to invest in a food scale before beginning your sourdough journey. In your attempt to achieve the perfect sourness of sourdough, it is also recommended to utilize a dough temperature chart to make sure you bulk ferment your dough long enough, but not too long to over-proof it, resulting in an extremely potent loaf. If you are baking under time constraints or if you are an impatient baker, you can feed your starter and then place it near a candle warmer to help it rise more quickly. Be careful with this tip, though - if the top of your starter gets too hot, it will start to bake!

Hopefully, these tips will hasten your jump on the sourdough bandwagon, and while sourdough can and will test your patience and skills as a baker, the more you practice, the sooner you’ll be baking the most delicious sourdough goodies! n

BUILDER-GRADE BORING TO

How to transform your space without a full-blown renovation

There’s a moment many of us have had…standing in the middle of our living room, coffee in hand, thinking: Why does my home feel so…meh?

It’s not that anything is wrong, exactly. It’s just that everything feels a little too underwhelming. Here’s the good news: with a few intentional updates, you can completely shift the feel of your space, without draining your savings.

START WITH WHAT BOTHERS YOU MOST.

Before you open a paint can or start adding to your cart, take a step back. What actually feels off?

Is it the cabinetry that dates your entire kitchen? Walls that no longer reflect your style? Lighting that does nothing but exist? Pinpointing your biggest pain point helps you focus your budget and energy where they matter most.

As Montgomery’s design consultant, Amber Schnetter, shares, “We frequently work with clients who aren’t ready for a full remodel but want impactful change. A few thoughtful updates can completely transform how a home feels.”

PAINT: THE HIGHEST-IMPACT UPGRADE (PERIOD)

If there’s one change that delivers immediate results, it’s paint.

Cabinetry and trim, especially those warmer, orange-toned woods, can be completely reimagined with the right prep and finish. It’s not a quick project, but it is a doable one. And the payoff? Dramatic.

The key is in the prep work (don’t skip it) and choosing a durable, high-quality paint that can handle real life. Aim for timeless over trendy. That moody green might be having a moment, but will you still love it in three years?

CREATE CALM WITH COLOR CONSISTENCY.

A cohesive color palette can instantly elevate your home from choppy to curated. Think light, warm, inviting neutrals that flow seamlessly from room to room, creating a sense of calm and intention.

Then, layer in personality through the things that are easy to switch out, such as throw pillows, rugs, art, and greenery. This gives you the freedom to evolve your style without

having to start from scratch every time a new trend catches your eye.

RETHINK YOUR LIGHTING… PLEASE

Lighting is one of the most overlooked and most powerful design elements in a home.

Swapping outdated fixtures for something sculptural or modern can update the entire tone of a room. Suddenly, your space doesn’t just function. It makes a statement.

Translation: that one fixture might do more for your space than ten small decor pieces ever could.

It’s not just what you have—it’s how you use it.

Before you buy anything new, take a look at your layout.

Are your furniture pieces working together, or just filling space? Have you created areas for connection, or is everything pointed toward the TV? Is your furniture scaled appropriately, or does something feel slightly off?

Sometimes the biggest transformation comes from simply rearranging what you already own. And if it still doesn’t feel right, bringing in a designer for a quick consultation can be surprisingly affordable and incredibly clarifying.

As Amber puts it, “Furniture arrangement isn’t just practical, it’s an art. In addition, you may find that replacing even one piece can make a significant difference. Stop in to our showroom for inspiration or check out our new outlet and clearance centers, which are a great way to find single pieces at deep discounts.”

FALL BACK IN LOVE WITH YOUR HOME.

You don’t need a massive budget or a full renovation to create a home that feels like you.

Often, it’s the small, intentional changes. The fresh coat of paint, the statement light fixture, the reimagined layout… that turn a space from builder-grade into something personal, layered, and inviting. A space that perfectly represents you. n

ROOM TO BREATHE,

Views for Miles

Rolling hills and a creek add charm and beauty to a countryside estate

by Dylan Hillestad, Sioux Falls Real Estate Photography

For Greg and Kari Dykstra, finding a home that offered both escape and connection was essential. They wanted room to breathe, space to unwind from the pace of Sioux Falls, without sacrificing proximity to work, family, and community. That balance led them to a rural Harrisburg acreage tucked into the well-established Twin Creeks development, just minutes from the city’s southern edge. There, at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, their home overlooks 2.26 acres of sweeping countryside, where rolling hills and a nearby creek lend a sense of calm that feels worlds away.

Greg, a retired Air Force veteran originally from Avon, was especially drawn to the idea of returning to open space after years of more suburban living. “When we found our home, the acreage really sold it for us,” he says. “Being able to enjoy this kind of space without feeling completely isolated was important. We like having a few neighbors and being part of an established neighborhood; it’s something we’ve really come to appreciate.”

Twin Creeks is thoughtfully designed with spacious lots, paved roads, and unobstructed views that stretch for miles. The Dykstras' home rises gracefully alongside two neighboring properties, each positioned to maintain privacy while preserving the natural beauty of the land. With its cream stucco exterior and architectural details, this home immediately stands out.

Photos

“We’ve always been drawn to homes that feel a little different,” Kari shares. “When we walked in, it just spoke to us. Of course, we loved the lot and the backyard, but it was the uniqueness that really captured us. No one else has a home quite like it.” She continues, “In addition, we love the huge pines in our yard, especially at Christmas time.”

Inside, that individuality continues. A welcoming foyer sets the tone, featuring a sparkling modern chandelier and rich hardwood staircase. At the top, a cozy family room opens up with soaring ceilings and expansive picture windows that frame the landscape like living art. It’s here that Kari often spends time unwinding, sometimes with a good book, other times simply enjoying the view alongside the couple’s two German Shepherds.

The kitchen, just off the family room, is both functional and inviting. A large island with a built-in cooktop anchors the space, complemented by granite countertops and traditional cherry cabinetry. A custombuilt cabinet designed to resemble a china hutch elegantly displays the couple’s crystal collection, adding a personal touch. Nearby, the dining room curves into a semi-circle of windows, once again drawing the outdoors in and creating a light-filled setting for meals.

3RD PLACE

Thinking about retirement?

Set in one of Sioux Falls’ historic neighborhoods, this nationally-recognized kitchen blends classic architecture with thoughtful modern updates.

Soft blue cabinetry and warm brass accents feel right at home beneath a striking coffered ceiling, honoring the character of the original space while elevating it for today’s lifestyle. A generous island anchors the room, creating a natural gathering place for everyday moments and effortless entertaining.

Designed by Carissa , this project earned Third Place in a National Design Competition , standing out among more than 100 entries from across the country.

Just beyond, a covered deck extends the living space outside. It’s a favorite spot for the couple, especially at the end of the day. “We love to grab a drink and sit out there together,” Kari says. “It’s so peaceful. The sunsets are incredible, and it’s just a nice way to slow down.”

An arched hallway leads from the main living area to the primary suite, a serene retreat designed with comfort in mind. Large windows continue the home’s theme of capturing the surrounding views, with dual walk-in closets providing ample storage. The ensuite bathroom reflects Kari’s love of a light, coastal aesthetic, with a double vanity, a spacious jetted tub, and a separate shower, creating a space that feels both fresh and restorative.

The main level is thoughtfully designed to support everyday living. In addition to the primary suite, a second bedroom, including a laundry and powder room, is currently used as a home office. “Everything we need is right here,” Greg notes. “It makes daily life simple and convenient.”

While the main floor serves as the heart of their daily routine, the walkout lower level is where the home truly shines as an entertaining space. A large great room with a fireplace and a full wet bar creates the perfect setting for gatherings with family and friends, especially during the holidays. Sliding doors open to the backyard, where the Dykstras have installed a custom iron fence for their dogs, carefully chosen to provide safety without interrupting the expansive views.

Yaas, Queen.

A hot tub adds another layer of relaxation, providing a place to unwind under the open sky. Nearby, a game room, separated by French doors, has become Greg’s favorite retreat. Echoing the design of the upstairs dining area, the room features a curved wall of garden-level windows that flood the space with natural light.

Down the hall, a spacious third bedroom and a three-quarter bath provide a private haven for overnight guests. “It’s the perfect setup,” Kari says. “Our family and friends have their own space, and it feels comfortable and welcoming for them. We never worry about anyone feeling like they’re intruding.”

Beyond the walls of the home, it’s the land itself that continues to shape the Dykstras' experience. The gentle slope of the yard, the distant movement of the creek, and the ever-changing colors of the seasons create a backdrop that feels both grounding and

inspiring. Whether it’s watching the sunrise with a hot drink or enjoying the quiet stillness of an evening outdoors, the property offers countless moments to pause and take it all in.

For Greg and Kari, this home represents more than just a place to live; it’s a reflection of how they want to spend this chapter of their lives. It offers the rare combination of privacy and connection, beauty and functionality, tranquility and accessibility.

“In a lot of ways, it feels like the best of both worlds,” Greg says. “We have the space and the views we always wanted, but we’re still close to everything that matters.”

And in that balance, between open skies and everyday convenience, they’ve found something even more meaningful: a place that allows them to slow down, breathe deeply, and truly feel at home. n

A NEW ERA OF HEARING AIDS

HOW AI IS TRANSFORMING THE WAY WE HEAR

When you think of artificial intelligence (AI), you might not immediately connect it to everyday, practical uses. However, one of the most meaningful advancements is happening in something many people rely on daily: hearing aids. While traditional devices have long been life-changing for those with hearing loss, they’ve also had limitations, especially in complex listening environments.

According to Midwest ENT & Allergy audiologist Bailey Heaton, AuD, CCC-A, one challenge stands out. “The most common complaint I hear from patients using hearing aids is that background noise can be problematic. Manufacturers have worked to improve this year after year, but implementing AI has made a remarkable difference, and it will only continue to get better.”

AI operates through technologies such as machine learning (ML) and deep neural networks, which allow devices to recognize patterns and make real-time adjustments. In hearing aids, this translates into a significantly more natural and personalized listening experience.

HOW IT WORKS IN REAL TIME

In the past, users often had to manually adjust their hearing aids depending on their environment; switching settings at home, in crowded restaurants, or during social gatherings. Today, AI does that work for you. Modern hearing aids automatically adapt, adjusting volume and filtering background noise based on your surroundings.

Bailey explains, “It learns from different environments, and that’s only going to improve over time. That’s the biggest change people are noticing now, and will continue to notice even more in the future.”

ENHANCED SAFETY FEATURES

Today’s hearing aids offer more than improved sound; they also provide added peace of mind. Many models can now detect when a wearer has fallen and alert a loved one. While earlier versions of this technology were less reliable, AI has designed fall detection to be far more accurate. Even better, these features are included without additional subscription fees.

DISCREET AND UNOBTRUSIVE

You might assume that more advanced technology would mean bulkier devices, but the opposite is true. In fact, today’s models are just as discreet, if not more so, than traditional designs. Modern AI-powered hearing aids remain small, sleek, and comfortable.

“There’s a common misconception that these devices are listening to conversations,” Bailey says. “They’re not. They’re simply analyzing environmental sound patterns to optimize your hearing experience.”

THE BOTTOM LINE

If you’ve noticed changes in your hearing, seeking expert care can make a meaningful difference in your overall health and quality of life. Working with specialists who understand and utilize the latest advancements in hearing technology can help you move forward with greater confidence, clarity, and connection.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR PETS CALM AND SAFE THIS SUMMER

For many people, summer months mean backyard barbecues, late-night celebrations, and potential fireworks over the 4th of July. To us, this sounds extremely fun and exciting. For our pets, however, this period can trigger extreme stress and anxiety. Loud noises, flashing lights, unfamiliar guides, and disrupted routines can result in anxiety and dangerous escape behaviors in our companion animals. Preparing ahead of time can make a major difference. This advice will help you keep your pets calm, comfortable, and secure during your summer festivities.

As we prepare to launch our huge fireworks into the sky, we may think it is a beautiful sight. Animals, however, experience the world differently from us. Dogs and cats have far more sensitive hearing, which means these fireworks can sound painfully loud. Because pets do not understand what fireworks are, the explosions may trigger a fight-or-flight response in them. Some common signs of stress include pacing, trembling, excessive meowing/barking, hiding, panting, drooling, escaping, loss of appetite, and destructive behavior.

How can you help your pets remain calm during the 4th of July or other festivities? One of the most effective ways to reduce stress is to prepare a quiet, secure area inside your home before any celebrations begin. The space should have minimal outside noise, contain familiar

bedding, and allow them to hide comfortably if they choose. It should also include their favorite toys or treats.

Also, close the windows, curtains, and blinds to reduce flashes and noises. For cratetrained pets, putting a blanket over the kennel can mimic a den-like environment. I would also recommend keeping pets indoors and utilizing calming techniques. Calming techniques can include exercising early in the day to reduce energy before any festivities, staying calm yourself, offering distractions such as puzzle toys/chew treats, and using pheromone diffusers. Never give your pet human anti-anxiety medications. Please consult a veterinarian if none of these options work to obtain a prescription medication.

A little preparation before summer festivities can go a long way in reducing fear and anxiety in our pets. These tips can help ensure the summer goes safely and comfortably for every member of the house, including the fourlegged ones. n

PHOTO INSPIRED BY REAL COMMUNITY MEMBER PAULINE

Picture a retirement filled with the lifelong hobbies you love – all in a place where you have the space to flourish.

That’s everyday life for Pauline Daninger, senior living resident at Good Samaritan –Heritage Grove in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, whose days are filled with a variety of creative endeavors.

She’s always making something with her hands and her heart.

Everybody’s very friendly,” says Pauline. “We did a craft with these little brushes where we added a nose and a hat. It was really fun.”

Senior living offers the best of both worlds: meaningful community and quick access to everyday needs. Pauline loves being close to her doctor and appreciates how simple life feels compared to maintaining a house on her own.

“Everything is easier here,” Pauline says.

I do oil painting, crocheting, baking and whatever comes up that I enjoy,” says Pauline. “It really pleases me to make things and give them to people.”

Craftsy her entire life, Pauline moved to Good Samaritan and quickly embraced the freedom of senior living. Without the responsibilities of home maintenance and upkeep, she’s gained something invaluable – more time to do what she loves.

And with fewer worries, Pauline’s imagination has room to roam –dreaming up her next project, one stitch or brushstroke at a time.

“I find different things that I enjoy. I just keep myself busy,” she says.

“My apartment is always a mess because I have my activities out, but that’s OK,” Pauline says.

Whether she’s arranging flowers, embroidering or baking fresh bread, no two days look the same. Recently, she crocheted an entire box of handmade dish rags for her niece – just because she could.

At Founder’s Crossing, it’s about living life fully with the time, space and support to continue pursuing what makes you you. Live like Pauline and maintain your craftsy creativity.

Why stop doing what you love, when you finally have time to do it all?

Pauline also enjoys the sense of connection that comes with community living. Welcoming neighbors and scheduled activities make it easy to stay social, uplifted and engaged.

KendraSandal

Embracing Life’s “Mane” Priorities

Kendra Sandal is not only a wig specialist; she is also a client. Experiencing hair loss as a child left her seeking solutions that were not locally available, but far away. Seeing the need for a larger selection of wigs for clients of all ages, as well as wig fitting, care, and scalp services, Kendra pioneered the opening of her studio, Hair Happens or Not. Blending industry knowledge and advice with a luxurious head spa experience, she is creating options and services that are being embraced by those with hair loss and scalp issues.

PIGTAILS ON THE PRAIRIE

Kendra has lived in a few parts South Dakota for most of her life. Some of her earliest memories include playing with goats and llamas while living in Yankton. It was during those early years that she began to develop a love of being outside, as she says, “If it was taking a walk, visiting the park, or going camping, I always loved being in the sun.”

In early elementary school, Kendra envisioned herself becoming a teacher as she felt drawn to working with children. When she was in the 6th grade, she started to notice small patches on her scalp where her hair wasn’t growing. After a biopsy and testing by a dermatologist in Sioux Falls, Kendra was diagnosed with alopecia. Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss, which can range from patchy spots to total hair loss over the entire body.

Kendra remained unconcerned about her condition, as she didn’t notice significant hair loss, and there was enough hair left to cover the patches. As her condition worsened and her confidence diminished, she began to struggle with self-esteem issues. “The staff at my school were so supportive and offered that I could wear hats or scarves whenever

I wanted.” Soon, Kendra and her mom Heidi traveled to Sioux Falls again to get the first wig. Mother and daughter immediately noticed that most of the wig options available were produced for adult customers.

Luckily, Kendra and Heidi found a few more options in Omaha. “I was happy to see wigs geared toward my age.” The wigs she found there, and the support she received from the staff who assisted her, helped her navigate her lingering self-esteem issues and balance out the depression she sometimes felt about her condition. During her teenage years, Kendra began considering nursing school, as her nurturing side pulled her toward occupations that helped others. Yet when blessed with the pregnancy of her son Lincoln, she felt that a nursing program might be too much to tackle as a new mom.

STRANDS AND SMILES

As a new Mom, Kendra was drawn to the idea of helping others experiencing hair loss and other scalp conditions. She enrolled in cosmetology school and worked part-time at the Carroll Institute, handling operations at the front desk and billing positions that she still holds.

Kendra had noticed a lack of services available for people like herself. She felt that head spas and wigs services would be a great enhancement at an established salon. Her father, Scott, had a different idea. Owning a business that provides area communities and school children with education about the evergrowing digital world, Scott challenged his daughter to launch her own business. Between Heidi and Scott, there was plenty of very useful advice, as Kendra explains, “Thankfully, my mom has a business degree, and I could bounce ideas off my dad.”

By this time, Kendra was pregnant with her daughter Marlee. She was able to embrace pregnancy while completing the steps to launch her own studio. Parenthood is her top priority, as she exclaims, “I love being a mother. It is the most important thing in my life. I have been blessed with the opportunity to be a very involved parent.” Bookings and heartwarming interactions and relationships with clients continue to increase. Kendra comments, “Seeing clients is so rewarding, and I love to

compare their faces before they have received services to after they have been helped.”

WEAVING LIFE TOGETHER

Embracing the green thumb she has developed, Kendra finds that her adoration of plants is evident in her children. “I love plants. I have a bunch of indoor plants I obsess over and take care of. My kids help me trim, water, and love them”! She also sees in her kids the love of the outdoors she developed as a child. Kendra and her partner Jayd can often be found outside with Lincoln and Marlee, playing at the park, going for walks, camping, or spending time at a family lake home in Minnesota. When not outside, Kendra turns to culinary pleasures, as she says, “I love to cook, and I try to make my family homemade meals of anything from pasta to meats to soups every single night I’m home from work.”

When she finds precious alone time, Kendra spends it reading, running, painting, and making her own scalp scrubs using a recipe of natural ingredients. She has a fondness for volunteering in general and wants to model that activity to encourage her children to become involved when they are older. “I love volunteering at my son’s school! Whenever I’m able, I help out with any fundraisers, field days, and class parties that I can!

Kendra says that the Sioux Falls area community is extremely supportive and residing so close to her parents and grandparents means extra help with her kids. “I wouldn't be able to do anything without the support I get from my family, especially my boyfriend, parents, and my sister! They're so amazing and always help me out with anything when needed, with my kids or with work!”

TRESSES OF CONFIDENCE

Looking back on her alopecia journey, Kendra identified the need for emotional support. “When I was younger, I had no one to talk to but my parents when I was struggling with my condition. This made me want to help younger people and anyone needing that kind of care.” She began an alopecia support group through the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. Almost a dozen people have attended meetings, and more are expected to join as awareness about the group grows.

Kendra is adamant about business owners selecting a business that one can believe in. She feels that people should not take a job simply for the money. Instead, she advises, “Chase your passion and find something that helps others. There is nothing like the reward you get from that.” n

THE NEW FACE OF RETIREMENT LIVING

Story & photos courtesy of Touchmark at All Saints

Retirement communities today look and feel vastly different than those of a generation ago.  Institutional hospital-like facilities have given way to vibrant communities where aging adults enjoy resort-style amenities, personalized support, and lasting friendships.

According to Amanda Snoozy, Executive Director of Touchmark at All Saints, the shift reflects the expectations of today’s seniors, who are active, informed, and looking for meaningful ways to stay engaged.

“Few roles offer the privilege of being welcomed into the daily lives of others during such an important chapter. That responsibility challenges our team to show up each day with greater presence, thoughtfulness, and consistency,” Snoozy says.

That mindset shapes the resident experience. Team members take the time to know their residents and families personally—their routines, preferences, values, and life stories. Those relationships create a welcoming environment where people feel seen and supported.

THE BEST TRANSITIONS COME DOWN TO CHOICE.

Snoozy says one of the biggest mistakes families make is waiting too long to talk about what comes next.

Too often, a move is due to a crisis such as a health issue, prolonged isolation, or caregiver burnout. By then, decisions can feel rushed and overwhelming.

When conversations begin earlier, older adults can actively participate in the process, explore options, and make decisions from a standpoint of confidence rather than urgency.

“I’ve seen residents arrive with understandable hesitation, unsure of what this next chapter will feel like,” Snoozy says. “Then, often sooner than they expected, they begin forming friendships, finding new routines and realizing they haven’t lost independence—they’ve gained community.”

HONORING HISTORY WHILE EVOLVING

The Touchmark at All Saints campus has been part of Sioux Falls’ history for over 140 years. It began as an all-girls school in the 1880s before transitioning to a full-service retirement living community.

As Touchmark at All Saints celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, Snoozy says the community has worked to preserve its historic character while continuing to evolve.

Original architectural details and mature grounds remain carefully maintained, while updates have included additional independent living apartments, a fitness club, and flexible financing options, such as the Choice Living program.

“All Saints’ foundation and character have always been its strength,” Snoozy says. “What has evolved is the experience around it—the way we care for residents and continue adapting to the expectations and interests of each new generation.”

Today, programming is shaped by resident interests and input. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all calendar, the focus is on creating experiences that reflect the people who live there.

“It starts with listening,” Snoozy says. “When you understand what matters most to residents, you can create opportunities that bring purpose, joy, and real connection to everyday life. Let’s listen, engage, and make a difference for every resident—starting today.” n
