As busy couples, it’s easy for weeknights to slip into routines of errands, screens, and early bedtimes. But what if your next date night came with a scoreboard, a team name, and a built-in reason to laugh a little harder together? Across Sioux Falls, couples are discovering that league night might be the unexpected spark their relationship needs.
The idea is refreshingly simple: pick a sport, join a league, and show up together each week. From bowling lanes to pickleball courts, couples are trading passive evenings for shared experiences that bring just the right mix of fun and focus.
At first, it’s just an idea—something new to break up the week. Before long, it becomes the night you both look forward to. There’s something energizing about stepping out of your usual roles and onto the same team. Leagues are designed to be accessible, whether you are a seasoned athlete or a total beginner. The formats level the playing field so everyone is able to participate. You show up, play your games, and then linger a little longer for conversation, snacks, and connection.
In Sioux Falls, there’s no shortage of ways to make it happen. Some couples gravitate toward classic bowling leagues at local spots like Sport Bowl or Eastway Bowl, where the atmosphere is just as social as it is competitive. Others pick up a paddle and join the Sioux Falls Area Pickleball Club, where structured leagues and open play welcome every skill
Why Sioux Falls couples are trading date night for league night
By Chellee Unruh
level. If you’re looking for something more active, volleyball leagues through Digz Volleyball or the Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation offer everything from competitive matchups to laid-back, social play. And for those who prefer staying in, even a couple’s fantasy league can create that same sense of teamwork and weekly connection—no court required.
What makes league night special isn’t really the competition— it’s the communication. Playing together naturally invites teamwork. You learn how your partner handles pressure, celebrates small wins, or laughs off a bad round. There might be the occasional disagreement over strategy, but more often than not, you’ll find yourselves encouraging each other in ways that carry beyond the game.
And then there’s the community. Week by week, familiar faces become friends. You start to recognize the couples who play to win and the ones who play mostly for the social hour. Either way, there’s a shared rhythm—inside jokes, friendly rivalries, and the quiet anticipation of a season that somehow matters more than you expected.
The key isn’t choosing the “perfect” league. It’s choosing to show up together. To set aside one evening a week that isn’t about obligations, but about shared experience.
Because in the end, it’s not about the score. It’s about carving out time to connect, to laugh, and to remember that you’re not just partners in life—you’re teammates. n

Most couples assume they do. The first real conversation usually reveals something different.
She thought they’d travel. He thought they’d finally have time to work on the house.
They’d been married 32 years. Raised three kids. Built a good life. Saved well. Did everything right.
And then she retired. And it turned out they’d each been picturing something different.
You may already sense it
Maybe you’re the one who keeps bringing it up, and he keeps saying you’ll figure it out. Maybe you’ve made good decisions together for so long that you assume you see retirement the same way. Or maybe you’ve wondered whether you actually do, and you just haven’t pushed on it yet.
Jill Mollner, Wealth Manager at Cornerstone Financial Solutions, sees it regularly. “Most couples aren’t starting in the wrong place. They’re simply working from two different pictures of retirement. Once we understand what each person wants life to look like, we can begin building a plan that supports both of them.”
When does each of you actually stop working? If one of you
retires two years before the other, someone’s income drops while the mortgage doesn’t. Someone’s home all day while the other isn’t. Travel plans may have to wait, and employer health plan coverage may need to be part of the decision.
Where are you going to live? Selling the family home, moving closer to children/grandchildren, downsizing. These decisions carry more financial and emotional weight than most couples realize, and they’re worth more than a rushed conversation after someone has already made up their mind.
Do you actually agree on what the money needs to do? This is where many couples discover a gap. She’s been assuming they’ll spend conservatively and leave something for the kids. He’s been assuming they’ll finally spend freely after decades of saving.
different kind of conversation
Most of those questions have answers. They just haven’t been asked in the same room at the same time.
“The plan has to work for both of you,” Jill says. “Sometimes the most important thing we do is guide you through the conversation you’ve been putting off. That’s when retirement stops being an assumption and starts being a plan.”

Jill Mollner, MBA, CFP® Branch Operations Mgr. Wealth Manager, RJFS
None of these decisions stands alone. Retirement timing affects taxes. Taxes affect income. Income influences how confidently you can spend. Estate goals shape decisions you make today. The real value isn’t answering each question in isolation. It’s understanding how they all work together.
And underneath all of it, retirement isn’t just a financial transition. It’s one of life’s biggest relationship transitions. The conversations you have now shape the retirement you’ll actually live.
Call 605.357.8553 or email cfsteam@ mycfsgroup.com to schedule a time for both of you to come in. We’ll look at your full picture, and help you move forward with a plan you’re both confident in.

Gold has captivated us for centuries worshipped by ancient queens, coveted by empires, and immortalized in legends. It crowned dynasties, inspired voyages, and lured dreamers toward whispered promises of treasure hidden beneath shifting sands. Even Anne Bonny, the notorious 18th-century pirate with a temper as quick as her blade, was said to drape herself in gleaming gold as she cut through the Caribbean. Power, danger, seduction—gold has always been part of the story.
Gold is more than an accessory. It’s a feeling – a warm molten glow that flatters the skin and elevates the everyday. Women reach for gold instinctively because it’s timeless - effortlessly elegant yet undeniably powerful. Gold jewelry has a way of making a woman feel both beautiful and confident. It deepens mystery and adds a breath of sensuality to even the simplest outfit. Gold doesn’t shout; it smolders.
Whether hoops, studs, or dramatic dangles, gold earrings frame the face and add instant sparkle.
The kind that catches the light when you turn your head. Simple or statement-making, a gold necklace serves as the foundation of your jewelry collection.
A Statement Ring

Bold or delicately feminine, a standout ring adds personality and drama to every gesture.
A Timeless Bracelet
From sleek bangles to chunky links, bracelets bring elegance and movement to the wrist.
A Treasured Pendant
An heirloom locket, an initial, or an ancient symbol adds mystery and transforms jewelry into something personal, something intimate. Gold becomes even more powerful when it carries a story or a secret.
Gold becomes more beautiful with time; it never fades or loses its fire. It lasts, often passed from one generation to another, becoming part of our stories. Gold is luxury, history, power, and sensuality laced into one. That may be the secret behind our love affair with gold. Because in its warm reflection, we see ourselves – remarkable, radiant, and forever resilient.
All in all, gold is more than just something we love to wear. It’s something we become – a little more dazzling, a little more daring, a little more dangerous in the most alluring way. Gold doesn’t just adorn a woman… it awakens her. n
1. Opt for one focal piece and build around it.
2. Mix textures for depth and interest.
3. Vary chain lengths to create dimension.
4. Include one surprise element, like a pendant or heirloom piece.
5. Stop before it feels over-styled! The best layers look effortless, like you threw them on while slipping out the door to meet someone who shouldn’t be kept waiting.

By Charlotte Hofer
There’s something powerful about going out in head-to-toe white. It’s crisp. It’s clean. It’s confident. It’s the fashion equivalent of walking around with your own personal lighting crew! And yet, for years, white has been given a bad rap — that it’s high-maintenance, just for summer, costly, and only for special occasions.
But here’s the truth: all-white dressing isn’t complicated. When you understand how to play with texture, silhouette, and tone, white becomes one of the easiest, most expensive-looking moves in your wardrobe.
White shows best in a clean line. Think tailored trousers, structured denim, cotton tees. These are pieces that hold their shape while they instantly elevate your look – right down to your all-white boots or sneakers.
DON’T TRY TO MATCH YOUR WHITES
Matching whites perfectly is like trying to get siblings to agree on where to eat — a noble, yet ultimately doomed, endeavor. Luckily, putting different shades of white together can actually look amazing. Ivory with stark white? Stunning. Cream with bone? A masterpiece. The subtle contrast adds richness and keeps the outfit from looking too sterile. Let your whites mingle.
ACCESSORIZE LIKE YOU MEAN IT
Gold jewelry warms up white tones; silver makes it edgy, and nude shoes keep the leg line beautifully long and uninterrupted. Add a white bag — or a small metallic handbag to give just a bit of contrast.
TEXTURE IS YOUR SECRET WEAPON
The magic of all-white is in the mix of fabrics. Long slim cardigans, linen blends, crisp denim, and a soft leather jacket - all bring dimension to a white palette. When you mix textures, you create luxury and depth; the kind that makes an outfit look expensive - without actually being expensive.
3 LITTLE WHITE LIES
Lie #1: “You can’t wear white after Labor Day.”
Tell that to winter whites — creamy knits, wool coats, and structured pants that look sleek and elegant.
Lie #2: “White makes you look big.”
It’s the FIT that determines shape, not the color. A monochrome palette actually elongates the body by creating a single, long, lean, and beautiful line.
Lie #3: “White is a waste of money - it stains.”
Modern fabrics, stain treatment sprays, and washable fabrics make white far more durable than its drama queen reputation.
SO GO AHEAD — raise the white flag and surrender to the power of an all-white outfit. Not because it’s safe, but because it’s striking. Not because it’s simple, but because it’s sophisticated. Wear white the way it deserves to be wornboldly, beautifully, and without apology. Because in a world full of color, there’s something truly unforgettable about the woman who walks in wearing nothing but light — glowing, effortless, and unmistakably white hot! n

Grilled Steak and Watermelon Salad
INGREDIENTS:
• 4 beef Tenderloin Steaks, cut 1 inch thick (about 4 to 5 oz. each)
• 1 teaspoon ground coriander
• 1 teaspoon ground cumin
• 2 slices seedless baby watermelon,1 inch thick (about 1 lb. each)
• Salt and pepper
DIRECTIONS:
• 8 cups baby arugula or spinach leaves
• 1/4 cup reduced-fat balsamic or Italian dressing
• 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes
• 1/2 cup thinly sliced red onion
• 1/4 cup crumbled reduced-fat feta cheese
1. Combine coriander and cumin; press evenly onto beef steaks.
2. Place steaks in center of grid over medium, ash-covered coals; arrange watermelon slices around steak. Grill steaks, covered, 10 to 14 minutes (over medium heat on preheated gas grill, 11 to 15 minutes) for medium rare (145°F) to medium (160°F) doneness, turning occasionally. Grill watermelon 2 to 4 minutes or until grill marks form, turning once.
3. Carve steaks into slices. Cut each watermelon slice into 6 wedges. Season beef and watermelon with salt and pepper, as desired. Combine arugula and dressing in large bowl; toss to coat. Divide arugula among four serving plates. Arrange beef and watermelon on salad; top evenly with tomatoes, onion and cheese.

Pork & Pineapple BBQ
Skewers
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 lb pork chops (cubed)
• 1 cup sweet barbecue sauce
• 1/4 cup, soy sauce, low sodium
• 2 tbsp lime juice
• 2 tsp garlic (minced)
• 2 tsp ginger (minced)
• 16 bamboo skewers (soaked)
• 1 pineapple (cubed)
• 1 red onion (wedged)
• 1/4 cup barbecue seasoning
DIRECTIONS:
1. In a bowl, whisk together barbecue sauce, soy sauce, lime juice, garlic and ginger. Set aside.
2. On a bamboo skewer, alternate stringing pieces of pork, pineapple and red onion. Brush with barbecue mixture. Cover and allow to marinate 1-2 hours in the refrigerator.
3. Preheat grill.
4. Grill on high, rotating as needed. When skewers are two-thirds of the way through cooking, remove from grill and sprinkle with barbecue seasoning. Return to grill until cooked to 145° F, followed by a 3-minute rest. Serve warm.
Ingredients:
1 lb chorizo sausage, fresh
3 cups frozen diced potatoes
1 cup onions, diced
6 eggs
To taste salt and black pepper
As needed cooking spray
6 Roma tomatoes, halved, grilled (optional)
½ cup scallions, sliced (optional)
Steps:
Preheat flat top grill to 400°F.
Oil hot flat top with cooking spray and add chorizo. Use a spatula or spoon to break chorizo up and stir until cooked through about 5-7 minutes until reaching an internal temperature of 160°F.

Add onions and potatoes and cook, stirring occasionally, until cooked through and beginning to brown, about 5-7 more minutes.
While potatoes are cooking, clear some space on the flat top and spray with oil. Fry eggs until yolk and whites are firm and the internal temperatures reaches 160 degrees F.
To serve, plate hash and top with fried eggs. Top with tomatoes and scallions if desired.

INGREDIENTS:
• 2 pounds Ground Beef (80% lean or leaner)
• 3/4 cup panko bread crumbs
• 1 cup barbecue sauce, divided
• 1/2 cup minced onion
• 1 egg
• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
• 2 teaspoons minced garlic
• 1 teaspoon dried thyme
• 3/4 teaspoon pepper
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
DIRECTIONS:

1. Add wood chunks, chips, pellets or charcoal to smoker according to manufacturer's instructions. Preheat smoker to 350°F.
2. Combine Ground Beef, bread crumbs, 1/2 cup barbecue sauce, onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, thyme, pepper and salt in large bowl, mixing lightly but thoroughly. Shape beef into a 10x5-inch loaf and place on smoker rack.
Cook's Tip: Meatloaf should be about 2-inches thick for even cooking.
3. Smoke 60 to 80 minutes depending on desired smoke flavor. Brush with remaining 1/2 cup barbecue sauce. Smoke 10 minutes more or until instant-read thermometer inserted into center registers 160°F.
Cook's Tip: Cooking times are for fresh or thoroughly thawed ground beef. Ground beef should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F. Color is not a reliable indicator of ground beef doneness.
4. Carefully remove meatloaf from smoker. Let stand 10 minutes. Cut into slices.
Cheddar Jalapeno Variation: Prepare recipe as directed above, adding 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese and 1/4 cup chopped jalapeño.

There’s something magical about the way a few wellplaced houseplants can transform a space. Whether you prefer a single statement plant or a lush collection of greenery, plants bring warmth, texture, and natural beauty into your home. They soften hard surfaces, add visual interest, and create a welcoming atmosphere that feels both stylish and serene.
As simple as it sounds, the secret to keeping your plants beautiful is placing them in a location where they can thrive. Plants are living things, and each variety has its own light, water, and care requirements.
One of the biggest mistakes I made when I first started decorating with plants was choosing a location based solely on appearance. While the plant looked beautiful in the space, I failed to consider whether it was receiving enough sunlight—or perhaps too much. The result? A lessthan-happy plant that more often than not ended up in my garbage can.
Before bringing a new plant home, make note of how much natural light your space receives throughout the day. Then choose a plant that matches those conditions. You’ll be rewarded with healthier plants and a home that feels naturally vibrant.
If you’re new to plant care, take time to visit a local greenhouse and talk with the experts. They can help you select plants that will thrive in your home’s lighting conditions and your lifestyle, while also explaining the care they’ll require.
Consistency is key. I’ve found that watering my plants on the same day each week helps me stay on track and keeps my plants thriving.
Another important consideration is - who shares your home? If you have young children or curious pets, make sure the plants you choose are non-toxic. A little research beforehand can help create a beautiful and safe environment for everyone.
Once you’ve found the perfect plant, it’s time for the fun part—styling it.
From modern planters and decorative stands to hanging baskets and woven containers, there are countless ways to showcase your greenery. When selecting a planter, choose one that is approximately two to four inches larger than the plant’s root ball and includes a drainage hole to prevent overwatering. If the planter sits directly on the floor, consider using a drip tray to protect your surfaces.
Succulents and other drought-tolerant plants thrive in terra-cotta pots because the porous material allows excess moisture to evaporate. For plants that prefer consistent moisture, glazed ceramic or plastic planters are often a better choice.
Trailing plants such as ferns and philodendrons look stunning in hanging planters. However, be careful not to place them too close to the ceiling, where air tends to be warmer and drier. Hanging plants become significantly heavier after watering, so always secure hangers within a wall stud or appropriate ceiling support.
For larger plants, decorative stands can add height and dimension to a room. Be sure the stand is sturdy enough to support the plant’s weight and stable enough to prevent tipping, especially in homes with children or pets.
Beyond their beauty, houseplants offer another benefit: they can help improve indoor air quality by naturally filtering certain pollutants from the air.
Whether you’re creating a cozy reading nook, brightening a home office, or simply adding a touch of nature to your living room, houseplants are an easy and affordable way to bring life into your home. And that’s a beautiful thing. n

From bright and airy elegance to moody sophistication, one Sioux Falls family transforms their forever home into a reflection of who they are.
By Margaret Pennock, Realtor®

For Jesus and Brooke Loya, finding the perfect home for their family, which comprised of daughters Logan and Luna and their beloved dog, Percy, was anything but a quick search. They spent more than a year waiting for the right house to come along. The moment they stepped inside, they knew their patience had paid off.
“Because we were looking for our forever home, we were very specific about what we wanted,” Brooke explains. “This home checked so many boxes. The south-central location, the large private yard with plenty of outdoor spaces to explore, and the fact that it’s east-facing so the backyard stays shaded in the afternoon were all huge selling points.”
Then she laughs.
“But the real clincher was the owner’s suite. It’s such a luxurious place to unwind.”
OUT
Nestled on a quiet cul-de-sac in one of central Sioux Falls’ most established neighborhoods, the Loyas’ four-bedroom, four-bath home sits on an extraordinary 1.4-acre lot. Offering nearly 3,800 square feet of living space, the home had recently undergone an extensive renovation before they purchased it.
Fortunately, the previous owners’ design choices aligned perfectly with the family’s style.
“We loved what they had done,” Brooke says. “We didn’t change anything on the main or upper levels.”
Guests are welcomed by a dramatic two-story foyer that opens into a light-filled living room. Floor-to-ceiling windows and expansive patio doors frame breathtaking views of the backyard, while a painted brick fireplace anchors the space with warmth and character.

Although the finishes remained untouched, every piece of furniture was carefully selected to complement the home’s airy aesthetic.
“We really got to start over,” Brooke says. “Our first house was our starter home, so furnishing this one was a completely different experience. We worked with Kayla Hathaway at Montgomery’s, and she helped us bring everything together beautifully.”
Just beyond the living room, a spacious deck has become one of the family’s favorite gathering places, offering the perfect extension of their indoor living space.
The Loyas first met designer Kayla Hathaway through her brother, who happened to be a friend. At the time, they had no idea how instrumental she would become in transforming their new house into a home.
“We wanted everything to look beautiful, of course, but it also had to function for real life,” Brooke says. “Kayla’s attention to detail was incredible. She knew every product inside and out and helped us choose pieces that could withstand two young kids and a dog while still looking amazing.”
The home’s layout strikes the perfect balance between openness and defined spaces.
The living room flows effortlessly into the dining area and kitchen, where oversized windows continue the home’s connection to the backyard. While many buyers gravitate toward completely open floor plans, the Loyas found they preferred a little separation.
“Our last home was completely open, and we actually like this layout much better,” Brooke says.
Adjacent to the foyer, they converted a flexible room into a dedicated playroom for the girls.

“I love that I can simply close the door,” she says. “The girls can play without disturbing the rest of the house, and I don’t feel like everything has to be perfectly picked up all the time.”
Features of the bright kitchen include crisp white cabinetry, quartz countertops, natural wood floating shelves, and an abundance of natural light.
“I love the open shelving because we use our dishes and glassware every day,” Brooke says. “Nothing has a chance to collect dust, and it lets us display pieces we really enjoy.”
Just beyond the kitchen, a thoughtfully designed mudroom and three-quarter bath provide practical everyday functionality.

While three bedrooms are located upstairs, the owner’s suite is undeniably the home’s showpiece.
A dramatic mid-century-inspired vaulted ceiling with an exposed beam creates architectural interest, while a double-sided fireplace separates the sleeping area from a cozy sitting room. A striking accent wall provides the perfect backdrop, and dual walkin closets offering generous storage.
The spa-like ensuite features a stunning wet room and elegant vanity, creating a true retreat.
“I absolutely adore this space,” Brooke says with a smile. “It’s perfect for us.”
The lower level is where the Loyas truly let their personalities shine.
Descending the stairs feels like entering a hidden speakeasy. Rich navy walls, crocodile-embossed wallpaper across the ceiling, warm lighting, and gleaming gold accents create an atmosphere that couldn’t be more different from the light-filled spaces upstairs.
“While we loved almost everything about the house, the basement

wasn’t quite what we envisioned,” Brooke explains. “We love hosting board game nights with friends and wanted a dedicated gathering space that felt like an upscale speakeasy or cigar lounge.”
Inspired in part by the Carpenter Bar, they embraced bold contrasts, layering rust-colored seating, dramatic gallery walls filled with artwork collected over the years, and richly textured finishes throughout the space.
The result is a sophisticated entertaining area complete with a custom game table that comfortably seats ten guests, a stylish bar, a fireplace, and a full bath.
Adjacent to the game room, the couple removed the wall separating a former bedroom and exercise room to create an expansive art studio where they can enjoy painting together. A Murphy bed preserves guest accommodations while allowing the room to function as both a creative workspace and flexible retreat.
Natural light continues throughout the lower level thanks to oversized windows and a walkout patio that opens to multiple levels of beautifully landscaped outdoor living spaces.
The backyard already includes terraced gardens, mature trees, and even a zipline for the girls, but the family says they’re just getting started.
Future landscaping projects are already on the horizon.

Looking back, Brooke and Jesus credit much of their renovation success to Kayla.
“We had never tackled a remodel before and had heard all the horror stories,” Brooke recalls. “We were overwhelmed and didn’t know where to begin.”
What started as conversations about furniture quickly evolved into something much more.
“I thought she would help us with ideas or maybe recommend a contractor or two. Instead, she became our project manager, designer, organizer, and biggest advocate.”
Kayla spent countless hours helping the couple refine their vision, coordinating contractors, attending meetings, managing details, and ensuring every design decision balanced beauty with functionality.
“She truly listened to us—even when we didn’t completely know what we wanted ourselves,” Brooke says. “She took our ideas and turned them into reality.”
As a dedicated customer of Montgomery Furniture, consultations are complimentary. “She did all of this design at no cost to us. We still can’t believe that level of service exists. We absolutely love that our home is unlike anyone else’s and feels completely, authentically ours.” n

There’s a reason so many people consider fall their favorite season. Crisp evenings, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, bonfires, and colorful leaves create the perfect backdrop for family memories. But for many midwesterners, those same traditions also bring itchy eyes, sneezing, congestion, and painful sinusitis.
The good news? You don’t have to choose between enjoying the season and feeling your best.
Fall is one of the busiest allergy seasons of the year. Until the first hard freeze, weeds—especially ragweed—continue releasing pollen into the air. Outdoor mold spores also thrive on damp leaves and vegetation that begin to decompose.
Living in an agricultural region adds an additional challenge. Harvest season stirs up crop dust that can aggravate allergy sufferers. As temperatures cool, we spend more time indoors, where dust mites and pet dander become more concentrated, creating a perfect storm of allergy triggers.
There’s also been a recent increase in viral illnesses
that often overlap with the late outdoor allergy season. According to Dr. Peter Kasznica, allergy specialist at Midwest ENT & Allergy in Sioux Falls, “As temperatures drop, viruses coincide with allergies in contributing to sinusitis. Symptoms of sinusitis include fatigue, facial pressure, upper tooth discomfort, green or yellow drainage, postnasal drip, and an altered sense of taste.”
While over-the-counter allergy medications may ease symptoms, they don’t always address the underlying cause. If you’re still struggling with congestion, sneezing, chronic nasal irritation, or sinusitis, it may be time to explore additional treatment options.
“There is actually a triangle of allergy treatment to look at: avoidance, medication, and immunotherapy,” explains Dr. Kasznica. “If antihistamines and prescription nasal sprays aren’t enough, immunotherapy—through allergy shots or sublingual drops taken under the tongue—can retrain the immune system and provide long-term relief.” He adds that sublingual drops have recently become much more affordable.
If allergies are affecting your sleep, work, or family activities despite medication, an evaluation by an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist may be the next step. One common misconception is that you need a referral from your primary care provider. In most cases, you can schedule directly with an ENT specialist. Midwest ENT & Allergy also offers ENT Urgent Care, a convenient Same-Day Clinic. Taking appointments Monday through Thursday from 8 am - 5 pm, and Fridays, from 8 am -3 pm, making it easier to get care when symptoms flare unexpectedly.
With the right diagnosis and treatment plan, many allergy sufferers can significantly reduce their symptoms and enjoy everything fall has to offer. If allergies have become a yearly struggle, expert care can help you breathe easier and get back to making fall memories.
To learn more or schedule an appointment, contact Midwest ENT & Allergy at 605-3363503. No referral needed. n
• Ragweed – The leading cause of fall seasonal allergies, releasing pollen until the first hard freeze.
• Corn Mazes & Harvest Season –Crop dust and airborne particles can worsen allergy symptoms.
• Bonfires – Smoke can irritate the nose and lungs while carrying pollen and mold spores through the air.
• Leaf Piles – Decaying leaves are a breeding ground for outdoor mold.
• More Time Indoors – Dust mites and pet dander become more noticeable as families spend less time outside.

Houseplants and outdoor gardens can always add great aesthetic, but some common plants pose serious health risks to pets. If your pets are anything like mine, they tend to be very curious and get into things they shouldn’t. Pets can often chew on leaves, flowers, or stems, which can lead to poisoning. Knowing which plants are dangerous and taking a few simple precautions can help keep your furry family members safe.
Many popular ornamental plants contain compounds that are harmful to pets. Some of the most common include:
• Lilies (especially dangerous for cats)
• Sago palms
• Oleander
• Azaleas and rhododendrons
• Tulips and daffodils
• Philodendrons
• Pothos
• Aloe vera
• English ivy
If your pet exhibits any of the following symptoms, it may indicate toxin exposure, including: vomiting and/or diarrhea, excessive drooling, loss of appetite, lethargy or weakness, difficulty breathing, tremors or seizures, or irritation of the mouth or skin.
So, how are you supposed to know what plants are ultimately safe to keep around your pets? I recommend these simple tips:
• Research plants before introducing them into your home or garden.
• Choose pet-safe plants whenever possible.
• Keep toxic plants completely out of reach (or avoid altogether).
• Supervise pets when they are outdoors, especially in unfamiliar areas.
• Remove fallen leaves, flowers, and bulbs from the ground.
• Provide safe toys and chew items to discourage plant chewing.
• Teach children and visitors not to feed plants or flowers to pets.
If you think your pet has eaten a toxic plant, please follow these steps:
1. Remove any remaining plant material from their mouth if it is safe to do so.
2. Save a sample or take a photo of the plant for identification.
3. Call the 24/7 Animal Poison Control Center at 855-764-7661.
4. Contact your local veterinarian immediately or seek emergency veterinary care.
5. Do not induce vomiting unless specifically instructed by a veterinary professional.
In many cases, plant poisoning is preventable. By choosing pet-safe greenery and keeping hazardous plants out of reach, you can create a healthier environment where your pets can explore safely. n

Visualize a life where all your needs are met in a modern senior living community with social opportunities around every corner.
For Ellen Ell, she’s living just that at Ridge View Estates on the campus of Good Samaritan – Pipestone in Minnesota. She and her husband, Robert, moved there two years ago.
Each day brings an opportunity to show off her style and excellent taste.
Being an Avon lady, of course, you don’t go out without having makeup on and your hair done. We were trained on how to put on makeup and then we trained the Avon ladies under us,” says Ellen, who soon turns 90 years old.
After she’s ready for the day, she visits with neighbors at Ridge View Estates.

Ellen was with Avon for 15 years and worked her way up to team leader and assistant manager. She and her co-workers often went on work trips to the Twin Cities.

“I liked the advantages I got and the beautiful gifts they gave us,” Ellen says. “One gift was a gold necklace and earring set. When Avon bought Tiffany & Co., the team leaders got a sterling silver chain with a tiny sterling silver teddy bear.”
Today, Ellen still likes to be stylish.
“A person is kind of grouchy when they first wake up. Once I’m all dressed up, I feel a lot better,” says Ellen.
I know a lot of the people. Some of them I’ve played cards with for years, and it helps with my social life. You don’t have to go outside in the wintertime. You’re not isolated like you would be at home,” Ellen says.
Having an accessible senior living community with services has been beneficial for both her and Robert.
“It’s definitely made my life easier. They do the cleaning and then we can go for lunch at noon and I don’t have to make a meal. I like having laundry in our apartment,” says Ellen.
She credits the senior living administrator at Ridge View Estates for the positive, friendly atmosphere.
“Her people are very nice and helpful, and she has fun things on the calendar to do. I can’t say enough about her and how cheerful she is,” Ellen says.
At Founder’s Crossing, you’ll find opportunities to dress up for all occasions, living like Ellen with glamour and style.

Whoever said you can’t have it all clearly hasn’t met Andrea Smith.
Army veteran. Wife. Mother. Entrepreneur. Commercial real estate professional. Philanthropist. Mentor. Andrea has worn many titles throughout her life, but none define her as much as her unwavering determination to serve others.
Vivacious, gracious and relentlessly hardworking, Andrea has built a life centered on faith, family and community. Yet she’ll be the first to tell you that success didn’t come from a straight path. It came through heartbreak, setbacks, difficult decisions and the courage to begin again.
For Andrea, every challenge has become another opportunity to grow, and another reason to help someone else do the same.
After earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Andrea made an unexpected decision. Rather than beginning her engineering career, she accepted a commission as a Signal Corps officer in the United States Army.
“I was working in Army ROTC during college,” she recalls. “When 9/11 happened, I felt a strong desire to serve my country. Later, I left the military to raise my children. Military life isn’t easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding, and our country’s people are worth the sacrifice.”
After completing her service, Andrea became a project manager for a commercial construction company, quickly earning a reputation for managing complex projects and bringing in millions of dollars in business.
Outwardly, she appeared successful. Inside, she struggled.
“The message I kept hearing was that you couldn’t have a successful career and still be a great mom,” she says. “I felt like I was succeeding professionally but failing my family.”
Following the end of her first marriage, Andrea found herself balancing life as a single, working mother while chasing professional success that never seemed enough.

“I had worked so hard and generated millions of dollars in business, but it was never enough,” she says. “One morning I came in after dropping my son off at school and was reprimanded for not being there earlier. I was giving them my all, but they didn’t reciprocate. Right then, I knew I wasn’t where I was supposed to be.”
Life forced Andrea to slow down, literally, when she broke her leg on the way to work.
“I realized I didn’t just need to heal physically,” she says. “I needed to heal emotionally, too. My family deserved more of me.”
Walking away from the career she once believed was her dream wasn’t easy. But while listening to a community leader describe the frustrations of the construction process, Andrea saw an opportunity.
She founded Advise to Build, a company that advocates exclusively for owners throughout the construction process, protecting their interests while helping them build valuable assets.
Soon afterward, a former client asked her to return to work.
“I told him I couldn’t because I’d end up in the same situation again,” Andrea says. Instead, she realized she’d created exactly the career she’d been searching for— one that fit the life she wanted rather than the one she thought she was supposed to pursue.
In 2019, Andrea met Dan.
Married now for six years, they blended their families while building a relationship grounded in respect, shared values and unwavering support.
“I really believe we needed the partners from our first marriages to become the people we are today,” Andrea says. “By the time we met, we were healthy individuals looking for someone who complemented us, not completed us.”
Their partnership soon extended into business.
In 2020, Dan launched SoDak HVAC, and Andrea officially launched Advise to Build.
“It takes time, relationships and an incredible support system,” she says. “The best decision I’ve ever made was marrying Dan. He’s believed in me every step of the way.”

Together, they’ve built thriving businesses and a close-knit family rooted in resilience and purpose.
Today Andrea serves as a commercial Realtor®, project manager, property manager and business representative. Her diverse experience allows her to solve complex problems while helping clients make wise investments.
But what truly sets Andrea apart isn’t what she builds. It’s who she builds up.
Raised in a family committed to serving others, volunteering was simply part of everyday life.
“We volunteered at food pantries, church, Vacation Bible School and community cleanups,” she says. “Those experiences taught me empathy and showed me the importance of helping people.”
That spirit continues to shape everything she does.
Andrea has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars in professional services to local nonprofits, helping organizations maximize limited resources. Through thoughtful planning and project management, she has also helped clients save millions of dollars.
Together, she and Dan have intentionally created businesses where employees are valued as people, not simply workers.
“Why would we do what we’re doing if it wasn’t to help the people around us?” Andrea says. “Living in America gives us incredible opportunities to build better lives; for ourselves, our children and our communities. That’s how I want to spend my life.”

Whether advocating for a nonprofit or guiding a multimilliondollar project, Andrea approaches every relationship with kindness, integrity and genuine enthusiasm. She celebrates others’ successes as eagerly as her own.
Today, Andrea measures success differently.
She still believes in working hard, but not at the expense of the people she loves.
“Sometimes what you need most is coffee on the porch, time in the garden, puppies piled around you or taking your son to school because it’s his last year before he starts driving,” she says. “You deserve the flexibility to be present for those moments.”
Entrepreneurship has given her that freedom. It has allowed her to build meaningful businesses while still showing up for golf outings, show choir concerts, family dinners and the ordinary moments that become life’s greatest memories.
“All the kids are doing great,” she says with a smile. “I can look back now and know I was there for them.”
Andrea doesn’t pretend to have all the answers, but she knows every chapter—even the painful ones—shaped the woman she has become: one who leads with compassion, gives generously and understands that success isn’t measured only by accomplishments, but by the lives we touch along the way.
For Andrea Smith, every setback has revealed an unexpected silver lining—and she’s determined to help others find theirs, too. n
“A mentor once told me to become comfortable with the chapter of life you’re in. Looking back, I feel like I missed some of my children’s lives because I was so careerfocused, and now I treasure every minute I have with them. I’m a lifelong learner. I love getting to know people, building relationships, and helping others make their dreams come true.”
