COUPLES CONNECTION:

Stepping into Spring Together

How warmer days open the door to connection, adventure, and simple time outside.

While this past winter wasn’t as harsh as previous years, it was still cold enough that those early signs of spring feel like a quiet celebration. Suddenly, the days last a little longer, the sun sticks around after work, and you and your partner finally want to get outside and do something—without dressing for every season in one day.

Spring has a way of refreshing everything, and it can do the same for your relationship. It gives you more opportunities to step out of the usual routines at home and bring a little fresh perspective back into your time together.

For many couples, that starts with simple movement. Evening walks or bike rides on the bike trail, along the River Greenway, or through one of Sioux Falls’ many parks offer an easy way to unwind from the day. It’s amazing how just being outside can spark conversations that never seem to happen around the kitchen table.

Weekends tend to bring a little more adventure. Couples head east to Palisades or south to Newton Hills, where the warming trails make a morning hike feel like the perfect reset. And as spring markets start popping up again, it’s easy to turn the day into a full outing— grabbing fresh ingredients for brunch or lunch after your hike.

Then there are the activities Sioux Falls couples wait for all winter, like getting back on the golf course. Spring unofficially kicks off golf season, whether you’re playing a relaxed nine holes, having a putting green challenge, or just enjoying the sunshine. Pickleball also picks back up this time of year, with outdoor courts filling up as couples jump into friendly games with each other or with friends. Baseball, volleyball, and kickball leagues also start rolling, offering even more ways to stay active together.

And sometimes the best spring moments happen right at home. Backyard fire pits come back to life. Patio dinners stretch longer. A bike ride turns into an unplanned ice cream stop. Even a simple dog walk becomes an excuse to enjoy the warmer evenings.

What ties all these moments together isn’t the activity—it’s the space it creates. Being outside naturally slows things down. Phones stay in pockets, worries don’t feel quite as heavy, and couples find themselves more present with each other.

After a long Midwestern winter, getting outside together is a reset. Spring affords couples an easy, meaningful way to reconnect—one walk, one game, one sunny evening at a time. n

Riding Solo

Why every woman should travel alone (at least) once

Imagine you’re sitting in a cozy cafe in an unfamiliar city. Holding your iced latte, you’re just watching life happen around you. In this relaxed moment, you realize that no one is relying on you.

From family to work, it can be taxing to be the one with all the answers. The only one who can read the bedtime story or the only one who can lead the meeting.

Women tend to be the primary caregivers in their families, and in the Midwest, culturally speaking, family is often prioritized over individual experiences. And with the strong work ethic of this locale, taking time off for yourself is almost unheard of. It may even feel like you need to “earn” your rest after completing a mile-long to-do list.

This combo can make solo travel feel indulgent, which is exactly why it can be life-changing.

Women often define themselves by their roles: mother, wife, and professional. While also true, traveling on your own allows you to reclaim your identity outside

of this role. Finding (or rekindling) your independence can be empowering, which can help you return as a better, more patient version of yourself.

Traveling solo also gives you the confidence to trust yourself to make important decisions independently. As Jason Derulo once said, "There’s no one to answer to, no one that’s gon’ argue.” Do you remember what it was like to enjoy your own company? When traveling on your own, you can embrace the freedom to do exactly what you want to do without considering someone else’s opinion!

However, this isn’t saying you’ll be leaving all your responsibilities behind. Even a quick weekend away can do wonders for your state of mind!

For instance, take a drive to Omaha and stroll around the Old Market or find peace in the Lauritzen Gardens. Alternatively, rent a cozy cabin for yourself in the Black Hills to have a quiet weekend catching up on that Emily Henry rom-com you’ve been meaning to finish. If you’ve got a work trip coming up, extend it by a day or two, just to have a quiet dinner that you’d never be able to have with kids in tow.

Ultimately, solo travel isn’t about escaping your responsibilities; it’s about resetting so you can handle them better. You deserve to remember who you are when no one is asking for a snack or the meeting agenda.

So, whether you want a direct flight to Atlanta or just a staycation in downtown Sioux Falls, pick a weekend and book it. You’ll find that returning home is sweeter once you’ve taken the time to return to yourself. n

Social Security Benefits

What every woman should know

Social Security is one of the most important sources of income for women in retirement. It was created to provide financial support to individuals who retire, become disabled, or lose a spouse who has worked and paid into the system. For many women, Social Security is not just an additional income – it is a major part of their monthly budget.

Your Social Security retirement benefit is based on your work history. The government looks at your highest 35 years of earnings to figure out your average income. The more you earn and the longer you work, the higher your benefit may be. If you worked fewer than 35 years, the missing years are counted as zero, which can lower monthly payments. This is important because many women take time off from work to raise children or care for family members.

WHEN SHOULD YOU START BENEFITS?

You can start collecting Social Security as early as 62. However, if you do that early, your monthly check will be permanently reduced. If you wait until your full retirement age – usually between 66 and 67, depending on the year you were born- you will receive your full benefit. If you delay even longer, up to age 70, your benefit increases by 8% each year you wait. For women who expect to live a long life, waiting can mean thousands of dollars more over time.

BENEFITS FOR MARRIED AND DIVORCED WOMEN

Married women may qualify for spouse benefits. This means you could receive up to 50% of your spouse’s full retirement benefit, even if you did not work much outside the home. You will receive either your benefit or the spousal benefit –whichever is higher – but not both added together.

Divorced women also qualify for benefits based on an exspouse’s record. If your marriage lasted at least 10 years and you are currently unmarried, you may be eligible for spousal benefits. The good news is that your ex-spouse does not have to give you permission, and claiming this benefit does not reduce what they receive.

UNDERSTANDING SURVIVOR BENEFITS

One of the most important parts of Social Security for women is the survivor benefit. When a husband or ex-husband passes away, the surviving spouse may be able to receive up to 100% of the deceased person’s benefits. Survivor benefits can begin as early as 60 (or 50 if disabled), but they are reduced if taken before full retirement age. Divorced women also receive survivor benefits if the marriage lasted at least 10 years, and they did not remarry before age 60.

Because women often live longer than men, survivor benefits can be a critical source of financial security. Understanding how these benefits work can help women make smart decisions and protect their future. n

Microschools

Expanding educational choices in South Dakota

In Sioux Falls and surrounding communities, the educational landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. For decades, most families had to choose between public and private schools. Today, however, a growing number of parents are exploring a third path: alternative education, which includes homeschooling, unschooling (a child-led, self-directed approach to homeschooling that uses natural life experiences and curiosity rather than a formal curriculum to foster learning), hybrid programs, and—most notably in recent years—microschools.

Microschools are emerging across Sioux Falls and surrounding towns in response to increasing demand from families seeking something different. Unlike conventional schools, which often feature larger class sizes and standardized curricula, microschools typically operate with small groups of students and emphasize personalized, student-centered learning, using curricula of the school’s choice. The smaller classroom setting allows educators to tailor instruction to individual learning styles, interests, and paces, with options available for children of all ages and grades. South Dakota law allows for alternative instruction, including microschools, and does not mandate accreditation; however, some microschools in South Dakota choose to be accredited by non-governmental bodies, such as the International Association of LearnerDriven Schools. Microschools that educate through high school follow the same standards set by the South Dakota Board of Education and prepare transcripts that their students can use to apply for college or military service.

Microschools vary widely in philosophy and foundation. Some focus heavily on outdoor time in all weather conditions, while others utilize indoor space to deliver instruction. Certain schools value cohesiveness by requiring uniforms, while others value individual choice in school attire. Some microschools are secular, while others are rooted in Christian or Catholic traditions. These choices make it feasible for families to select an environment that reflects both their educational priorities and core values.

Microschools offer flexible scheduling that accommodates both the student and the family’s needs. Some offer the flexibility to enroll students as little as one day a week to enhance a homeschool education with extra-curricular activities or five days a week for full-time education at the microschool. Others offer a hybrid model, which includes classroom time two to three days a week with a teacher, and then students are sent home with prepared materials to complete under the guidance of their parents. Several schools even offer online programs for parents to use at home with their children. Like any other private school, families pay a tuition fee, which varies from school to school.

Because microschools offer smaller, more intimate settings, microschools often foster strong relationships among students and families. Members of the school community build meaningful connections that extend beyond the classroom, creating a network of support, friendship, and shared activities.

As more parents reconsider what education can and should look like, microschools are becoming an increasingly visible part of the conversation— reshaping how communities think about learning, one small classroom at a time. n

South Dakota boasts over 50 microschool resources within the following cities:

Beauty Secrets FOR THE SKIN

There may not be a magic wand that turns back time, but there  are smart, science-backed habits that can help your skin look its most radiant at every stage of life. The good news is simple and empowering: with a few of these smart strategies, your skin can look fresher, feel softer, and glow with confidence – whether you’re 25 or 65.

Here’s your skincare playbook…

1. THE SINGLE MOST POWERFUL ANTI-AGING STEP YOU CAN TAKE

SPF isn’t just for summer – it’s every day, all day, even in winter. Dermatologists agree: it’s the undeniable star of your routine – the most powerful anti-aging step you can take. Sunny or cloudy, warm or cold, SPF is the invisible veil that protects your skin from the quiet, constant whisper of UV damage.

2. MOISTURIZER: THE EVERYDAY ESSENTIAL

In the morning rush, it’s easy to skip moisturizer – but don’t. A rich cream can work small miracles by softening fine lines, strengthening the skin barrier, and restoring that velvety finish. Try creams packed with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or glycerin to replenish moisture and keep your complexion supple and radiant.

3. EXFOLIATE FOR INSTANT BRIGHTNESS

A mild exfoliant is the secret to smoother, more luminous skin. By lifting away dead cells, exfoliants with glycolic or lactic acid reveal a fresher, brighter layer beneath. The payoff  is big: better texture, refined pores, and a subtle polish that makes your skin catch the light just right.

4. CLEANSE GENTLY: KINDNESS COUNTS

Harsh scrubbing or using a stripping cleaner can cause the skin to be irritated and dry. Choose gentle formulas that clean without compromising your delicate skin. Your goal:Skin that feels soft and beautifully refreshed.

5. DON’T FORGET YOUR NECK AND HANDS

Your face isn’t the only place that tells your story. The neck, chest, and hands often show signs of aging – so give them some extra love and attention. Sweep your sunscreen and moisturizer downward and outward when applying. These extra few seconds will make a world of difference in your overall glow.

6. BOOST HYDRATION: DEWY STARTS WITHIN

Dehydrated skin looks dull and tired. Hydrated skin looks fresh, plump, and bright. Sip water throughout the day – it supports cellular health, elasticity, and firmness from the inside out. Add that to a hydrating skincare regimen, and you’ve got a winning combo, the recipe for that gorgeous dewy finish.

7. BEAUTY BEGINS WITH LIFESTYLE

Skincare products are powerful, but they’re only half the story. Nourishing foods, deep restorative sleep, daily exercise, and a calm, centered mind all work together to determine the way your skin looks and feels. A lifestyle that focuses on overall health translates into luminous skin that glows – from the inside out. n

Pro Layering Tips

(Make everyone think you hired a stylist!)

Agreat layered outfit looks effortless, but behind every “I just threw this on” masterpiece is a little strategy, a little play, and a whole lot of knowing how to stack your clothes like a stylist. With the right mix of textures, proportions, and structure, everyday basics suddenly feel runway-ready. All you need is a willingness to experiment and a few power pieces. Here’s how to layer like a pro.

THE 3-LAYER MAGIC TRICK

Every polished look starts with the base layer: Fitted tees, tanks, camisoles, or turtlenecks that sit close to the body,  keeping everything sleek. This is your foundation outfit—quiet, supportive, essential.

Next comes the mid-layer, the personality piece. Think button-down shirts, sweaters, vests, lightweight hoodies, and cardigans. This is where warmth, texture, and dimension enter the stage.

Finally, the outer layer steps in as the showstopper. Blazers, jackets, and coats sharpen the silhouette and give your outfit that “styled by a pro” finish. Three layers, endless combinations.

PLAYING WITH PROPORTIONS

Proportion play is where layering gets fun. A cropped jacket over a long button-down? Chic. A roomy trench over a slip dress? Elevated. When lengths vary, your outfit gains movement and visual interest. The trick is intentional imbalance – pair something short with something long, something fitted with something roomy, something soft with something structured.

TEXTURE: THE SECRET INGREDIENT

Texture mixing is the stylist’s cheat code. Try silk under wool, leather over knitwear, satin with metallic, and denim with everything. Even a simple black tee and jeans combo becomes instantly elevated with a quilted white vest or buttery leather jacket. Contrast creates dimension.

ADD A SPLASH OF COLOR

A cohesive palette keeps your layers looking curated, not chaotic. Start with neutrals – black, camel, navy – and add one bold accent. A pop of red under a charcoal coat or cobalt peeking from a caramel blazer creates impact without shouting.

FINISHING TOUCHES

Accessories are your style powerhouse. Hats, gloves, boots, belts, or jewelry add interest and tie your outfit together. They’re the final polish that makes layering feel intentional.

FUNCTION MEETS FASHION

Layering isn’t just stylish – it’s practical. Choose pieces that are breathable, comfortable, and easy to remove so you can easily glide from chilly mornings to warm afternoons without wardrobe wrestling.

YOUR LAYERING POWER PIECES

• Fitted tees, tanks, camisoles

• Button-down shirts, lightweight sweaters, vests

• Blazers, cardigans, structured jackets

FINAL THOUGHT

Layering is fifty-fifty creativity and confidence. Once you understand the building blocks, you can bend the rules, break the rules, and make your own! n

SPRING HOME GLOW-UP

Spend a weekend getting your home ready to embrace spring

Winters in South Dakota can be brutal on a home, often leaving it looking tired and weather-worn. The good news? With a little elbow grease and a minimal investment, you can give your home a muchneeded glow-up in just a weekend or two.

Choose a sunny weekend, invite your significant other, family, or friends, and turn it into a productive outdoor reset instead of a chore. Break the work into two manageable days to keep it attainable:

• Saturday: Clean + Repair

• Sunday: Refresh + Style

• Power Washing Packs a Punch

Even with minimal snow this year, South Dakota winds have delivered plenty of dirt that clings to siding, windows, sidewalks, driveways, patios, lawns, and outdoor furniture. A power washer is your best defense against the grime. If you don’t own one, they’re easy to rent for the weekend.

Focus first on sidewalks, driveways, and patio areas to remove salt stains, mold, and mildew. You can also carefully clean siding and windows. Stand at least three to five feet

from the surface and use a 45-degree spray tip to avoid damage. Apply soap starting from the bottom up, then rinse from the top down.

The transformation is immediate. Once surfaces are clean, take time to inspect for peeling paint, worn deck stain, cracked caulking around windows and doors, or other minor repairs that are easier to address now than later.

CHECK THE ROOF AND GUTTERS

Next, inspect your roof and gutters for leaves and winter damage that may have been caused by ice dams or heavy snow loads. If your home requires a tall ladder or feels unsafe, call a professional.

Verify that gutters are clear, and downspouts are directing water away from the foundation. If extensions are missing, now is the time to add them. Spring storms can bring heavy rain, and proper drainage helps prevent costly basement water issues.

RAKE, EDGE, AND REFRESH WITH MULCH

Snow removal often pushes rocks and debris into lawn edges. A thorough raking clears winter remnants and gives

you a chance to inspect sprinkler heads for damage.

Re-establish clean flower bed edges if they shifted during the freezethaw cycles. Add fresh mulch for an instant lift and remove dead plant material. Early spring bulbs or hardy seasonal blooms provide a welcome burst of color.

Few projects offer as much curb appeal impact for such a small investment.

FRONT DOOR REFRESH

Your front door sets the tone for your entire home. A fresh coat of paint, polished or updated hardware, and modern house numbers can dramatically elevate the exterior.

Current color trends lean toward deep, earthy, moody tones—classic yet bold.  Select a self-leveling exterior paint to minimize brush strokes. Clean exterior light fixtures, remove bugs and debris, and ensure bulbs match in color temperature; warm LEDs offer an inviting glow.

Finish with a new doormat and a simple wreath for an easy, affordable seasonal welcome.

A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER

Spring weather in South Dakota can be unpredictable. Before planting bulbs, plants, or planters, confirm frost dates with a local greenhouse.

Power wash only when temperatures consistently stay above freezing— ideally between forty and fifty degrees during the day—to prevent surface damage.

A focused weekend reset not only enhances curb appeal but also protects your investment by catching small maintenance issues early. By intentionally dedicating a weekend or two, you transform what could feel overwhelming into a manageable, satisfying seasonal project. n

LADY OF THE

Lake

A gorgeous custom home receives a sparkling contemporary refresh

What began as a modest lakeside cabin has grown into a stunning family retreat filled with decades of memories.

In 1978, Ed and Sharon Arshem purchased a modest 1,200-square-foot cabin on the banks of Lake Madison. With two bedrooms and one bathroom, it was the perfect getaway for their young family of four—a place where summers were spent boating, swimming, and enjoying the simple pleasures of lake life.

But as their family grew, so did their need for space.

In 2004, the couple decided to relocate the original cabin from the property and build a new home that could accommodate their growing family and be enjoyed year-round. In its place rose a beautiful 3,500-square-foot custom home designed to blend comfort with the surrounding lake views.

Today, the elegant two-story residence overlooks the water with effortless charm. The main level features an open kitchen flowing into a stunning great room, along with a welcoming threeseason porch that connects to the dining room and primary suite. A convenient laundry room and half bath complete the main level.

Photos by Dylan Hillestad, Sioux Falls Real Estate Photography

Upstairs, the home boasts three ensuite bedrooms, a dormitory-style room that comfortably sleeps four, a spacious family room, and an additional half bath—perfect for hosting family and friends.

The layout has served the Arshems well, especially as grandchildren have joined the family over the years. Yet recently, Ed and Sharon began to feel their beloved home could use a refresh.

What started as a simple idea—new carpet and a couple of chairs—quickly turned into something much bigger.

“We really just needed new carpet and two new chairs,” Sharon laughs. “But one thing led to another, and we realized how tired the whole place was looking. So we decided to take it a little further.”

That “little further” soon evolved into a nearly whole-home renovation.

A TRUSTED DESIGN TEAM

When it came time to update their home, Sharon knew exactly where to turn. More than two decades earlier, the Arshems had worked with designer Connie Sinclair at Montgomery’s to furnish the home when it was first built.

“Decorating really isn’t our forte,” Sharon admits. Since Connie helped us with the initial decorating 21 years ago, it only felt natural to go back to her.”

This time, Connie partnered with designer Amber Schnetter to guide the project from start to finish.

“Working with both of them was such a joy,” Sharon says. “Other than the cabinetry and plumbing fixtures, all of the flooring, lighting, furniture, and hardware came from Montgomery’s. They handled everything—even bringing in and arranging all the furniture and accessories. The design services and the many, many hours they put into the project

were completely complimentary. They made the entire process easy, and the end result is gorgeous.”

She adds with a smile, “They offered wonderful suggestions, but were never pushy or hard-sell.”

A FRESH, TRANSITIONAL STYLE

The home’s original design leaned heavily towards traditional, featuring warm tones, rich woods, and classic finishes. For the renovation, the Arshems embraced a lighter, more contemporary transitional aesthetic, maintaining a classic but welcoming feel.

The updated design focuses on organic materials, graceful curves, and simplified spaces—eliminating excess décor and allowing the home’s natural beauty to shine.

“We changed the color palette completely,” Amber explains. “Before, it was very warm with a lot of maroon and rust tones. We wanted to lighten everything up with a more neutral palette. The goal was to create a feeling of being at the lake without relying on heavy nautical themes.”

The result is a home that feels airy, relaxed, and connected to its surroundings.

LETTING THE VIEW SHINE

From the moment guests enter the home, the lake takes center stage. A stunning bank of windows frames the water beyond, drawing the eye outward and filling the space with natural light.

The updated furnishings complement the view without competing with it— sleek silhouettes, soft textures, and neutral tones create a calm, modern atmosphere.

In the kitchen, striking quartz countertops feature dramatic movement that continues seamlessly up the backsplash, creating a subtle wave-like effect reminiscent of the lake itself.

“The kitchen, great room, and threeseason porch are definitely our favorite areas in the home,” Sharon says.

A RENOVATION THAT GREW

“As you know, one thing leads to another,” Sharon says with a laugh. “We ended up removing all the cabinetry in the kitchen, laundry room, and two bathrooms. We replaced the tile and carpeted flooring with luxury vinyl and purchased all new furniture and accessories from Montgomery’s.”

Fortunately, the Arshems were able to reconnect with the original contractor who built the home in 2005 to handle the structural updates.

One of the most significant transformations took place in the primary bathroom, where the whirlpool tub was removed to create a larger, more luxurious shower.

Another dramatic change came in the great room. A large cherry wood surround that once housed the television, fireplace, and built-

in bookshelves was replaced with a stunning stacked stone feature wall that now anchors the space with texture and modern appeal.

“Connie, Amber, and our contractor coordinated everything with each other,” Sharon says. “They all worked so well together.”

FALLING IN LOVE WITH HOME AGAIN

For designer Amber Schnetter, projects like this are about more than just aesthetics.

“You might have once loved your home, but over time things change,” she says. “It may not have the same allure it once did. That doesn’t mean you have to build a new home or move. Sometimes refreshing the home you already love can make all the difference—especially if you love your location.”

For the Arshems, that location is everything.

“They have a beautiful spot on the lake,” Amber says. “Helping them fall in love with their home all over again—and creating a space they’re proud of and happy to be in—is incredibly rewarding.”

A HOME FILLED WITH MEMORIES

More than twenty years after building their dream lake home, the Arshems continue to enjoy sharing it with family and friends.

“We are so happy to still be here making memories,” Sharon says. “We started with our little cabin and two young children. Now we have a daughter-in-law, a son-in-law, and three grandchildren.”

Those grandchildren—now 16, 17, and 20—have also begun to bring their own friends to the lake too.

“So our place can get pretty busy,” Sharon says with a smile. “And that couldn’t make us happier.” n

Skip the Wait: SAME-DAY ENT CARE IS HERE

No referral. No ER visit. Just expert relief when you need it most.

Excruciating ear infections. Throbbing earaches. A severe sore throat that makes it painful to swallow. Sheer misery that leaves you clinging to the counter while your toddler calls your name.

Ear, nose, and throat (ENT) issues never show up at a convenient time — especially for busy adults and parents juggling school drop-offs, meetings, activities, and everything in between. And until recently, your fastest (and often most affordable) option was a general urgent care clinic staffed by providers who may not specialize in ENT care.

Thankfully, that’s no longer the case in Sioux Falls.

SPECIALIZED CARE — WITHOUT THE REFERRAL

Midwest ENT & Allergy has partnered with a national ENT urgent care facilitator to offer same-day urgent ENT services, Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. — no referral is required.

That means when you or your child wakes up with sudden

ear pain, sinus pressure, or alarming hearing changes, you can bypass the waiting game and see a specialist trained specifically in diagnosing and treating ENT conditions.

Patients receive focused expertise from providers who not only address the immediate issue but also develop a thoughtful care plan tailored to their needs. If followup care or additional treatment is needed, you’re already connected to the right specialist — no starting over.

WHY THIS MATTERS

When you’re navigating life’s challenges or managing a household, convenience isn’t just helpful — it’s essential.

An urgent ENT visit ensures you’re seeing a provider who can evaluate your condition with precision. It also establishes continuity of care, allowing you to build a relationship with a specialist who understands your health history and can monitor ongoing concerns if needed.

No ER bills. No guessing. Just expert care — right away.

COMMON REASONS TO SEEK URGENT ENT CARE

Many ENT conditions feel minor at first, but can quickly escalate in discomfort or severity. The new urgent care service treats all ages for the following:

• Ear infections

• Persistent earaches

• Eardrum perforations

• Earwax impaction requiring removal

• Strep throat

• Severe sinus pain or pressure

• Sudden hearing changes

• Swimmer’s ear

• Allergy flare-ups

Whether it’s your child’s third ear infection this winter or sudden sinus pain before an important presentation, having direct access to a specialist offers peace of mind — and faster relief.

EASY SCHEDULING — BECAUSE LIFE IS BUSY

Appointments are available Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Providers are available to triage concerns, offer guidance, and collaborate with on-call partners when needed to ensure timely recommendations and the appropriate level of care.

You can schedule by:

• Calling 605.336.3503

• Texting Urgent ENT to 888.327.3631

• Booking online through the Midwest ENT & Allergy website: midwestent.com

When you’re already balancing family, work, and everything in between, healthcare shouldn’t add more stress. Same-day expert ENT care means one less hurdle — and one more solution designed to fit real life.

Because when you feel better, everything runs better. n

A Simple Guide to Trimming Your Pet’s Nails

Regular nail trimming is a crucial part of pet care that is often overlooked. However, this essential task is critical for keeping your dog’s or cat’s nails at a healthy length. Nail length is not just about appearance — it directly affects their comfort, posture, and overall well-being.

WHY TRIMMING NAILS IS IMPORTANT

When a pet’s nails grow too long, it can cause pain and long-term health issues. In dogs, overgrown nails may press against the ground when walking, putting pressure on the nail bed and toe joints. Over time, this can lead to posture problems, and eventually arthritis and joint strain. In severe cases, nails can curl and grow into the paw pads, possibly causing infections and unnecessary pain.

Cats, especially indoor cats, are also at risk. While scratching posts help, they don’t always keep nails short enough. Long nails can snag on carpets or furniture, potentially causing painful tears to the nail and the surrounding toe. Senior cats may struggle even more because they are less active and naturally are less inclined to retract their nails.

REGULAR TRIMMING:

· Prevents painful splitting and cracking

· Reduces risk of infection

· Keeps paws healthy and comfortable

· Reduces risk of arthritis

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU TRIM?

Most dogs require nail trimming every 4 weeks, though very active dogs who walk on pavement may need it less often. Cats typically need trimming every 3 months.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS:

1. Use the Right Tools

Choose pet-specific nail clippers (scissor or guillotine style) or a pet nail grinder. Avoid human nail clippers.

2. Find a Calm Moment

Trim nails when the pet is relaxed, after a walk for dogs or after playtime for cats.

3. Identify the “Quick.”

The quick is the pink area inside the nail that contains blood vessels. Avoid cutting into it, as it can cause bleeding and pain. In pets with dark nails, trim small amounts at a time until you see a lighter inner circle.

4. Trim Small Sections

Cut just the sharp tip at a slight angle. If using a grinder, smooth the edges gradually.

5. Reward Your Pet

Offer treats, praise, or gentle petting after trimming the nails from each paw. Positive reinforcement helps make future trims easier.

What If You’re Nervous?

If you’re unsure or your pet resists, ask a professional groomer or veterinarian for a demonstration. Many clinics offer affordable nail trimming services and can teach you safe techniques.

Keeping nails trimmed is a small task that makes a big difference. With patience and consistency, it becomes a simple routine that keeps your dog or cat happy, healthy, and comfortable. n

Understanding Speech Therapy:

IT’S MORE THAN JUST SPEECH

According to Vanessa Anderson-Smith, Speech Pathologist/Certified Orofacial Myologist and founder of Anderson-Smith Therapy Institute, “Many people think that speech therapy is specialists working in a school setting, teaching children how to correctly pronounce certain letters and letter combinations or working with speech impairments. Yet speech therapy offers much more to people of all ages.” She and her staff provide services including reading, language development, feeding and swallowing therapy, and alternative and augmentative communication devices. Vanessa says, “I’ve worked with patients as young as 4 days of age and as old as 114.”

Speech pathology, also better known as speech-language therapy, is a specialized field dedicated to evaluating and treating communication and swallowing disorders across the lifespan. From toddlers learning their first words to adults recovering from medical events, speech-language pathologists address a wide range of needs that affect how people communicate, eat, and interact with the world around them.

Vanessa explains that a large portion of speech therapy is actual speech and language development. “Patients could be around 6 months old, and we listen to their babbling and watch how they interact and play to determine what course of treatment may be needed.” Speech therapy helps children who experience delays in speaking, difficulty understanding language, limited vocabulary, or trouble forming sentences. Therapy may also address articulation challenges, fluency disorders such as stuttering, and voice concerns, including hoarseness or vocal strain.

Literacy, language disorders, including dyslexia, and reading development can also be enhanced through speech therapy. Vanessa explains, “We often break down language from the beginning and build upon improvements in skills at each session, often using tips and tricks to master areas of difficulty for patients.” Because strong reading skills are closely linked to language ability, therapy often supports children who struggle with phonological awareness (the recognition and manipulation of sounds in words), comprehension, and expressive language. Early intervention has been shown to significantly improve academic outcomes.

Another critical area of speech pathology is feeding and swallowing therapy, or dysphagia treatment. Swallowing difficulties in infants, children, and adults may result from developmental delays, neurological conditions, stroke, or other medical issues. Therapy may focus on improving oral motor skills, safe swallowing strategies, and appropriate food textures to ensure adequate nutrition and safety.

For individuals with conditions like autism, cerebral palsy, or traumatic brain injury, augmentative and alternative communication tools such as picture boards, communication books, speech-generating devices, and specialized tablet applications empower them to effectively express their thoughts, needs, and emotions.

Vanessa wants people to understand that speech therapy addresses far more than just speech— it supports communication, learning, and safe swallowing, helping individuals of all ages lead fuller, more connected lives. She says, “Speech therapy is so important to individuals and families. We are thrilled that physicians, dentists, and patients all refer patients to us!” For more information, visit andersonsmiththerapy.com. n

D oreen Van Zee THE RICHEST WOMAN IN TOWN

The midday rush at the Sioux Falls Scheels usually thrums with the clinical efficiency of modern commerce. There is the beep of scanners, the low-level mechanical hum of the indoor Ferris wheel, and the brisk and distracted shuffle of people moving in and out of the store, eager to get on with their day. But at the end of one specific checkout lane, the world seems to slow down. Here, the frantic energy of retail meets a soft place to land. Doreen Van Zee stands behind her register, not just scanning barcodes, but scanning souls. At 67, she is a master of the human heart. To the casual observer, she’s a cashier. To the thousands who have felt the warm gravity of her gaze, her words, her hugs, and her blessings, she is the architect of a million small miracles. Shoppers don’t come to her line just for a receipt; they come for blessings and compliments. In a world that often feels bankrupt of kindness, Doreen Van Zee is proving to be the richest woman in town.

A LEGACY OF KINDNESS

Born in Detroit and raised in St. Louis, Doreen’s journey to the heart of South Dakota began long before she arrived in Sioux Falls in 2015. Her professional DNA was shaped early. Her mother was a manager at a Kmart, and it was there amidst the retail hustle of a different era that Doreen learned her most valuable lesson.

“Throughout the years, life has taught me attitude,” Doreen reflects, her voice steady and firm. “But it was my mom who taught me to be kind and respectful. I realize now those two things take you far in life.”

Those principles have guided her through a life filled with love and loss. Married to her husband Jason since 2002, Doreen is a matriarch who knows the depths of human experience. Together, the two have raised four children – three of whom are still with us- and she also takes immense pride in her five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

THE RIGHT PERSONALITY FOR THE RIGHT JOB

Doreen joined the Scheels team on April 14, 2021, and she “took to” the environment instantly. “I liked the people here and the daily fellowship with customers,” she says with a smile. “I also liked the

merchandise – honestly, I spend all my money here! Most of all, I enjoy the positive atmosphere.”

For Doreen, being a “people person” was not just a personality trait; it was a vocation. “I love coming to work each day. When I can be personable and treat others the way I would like to be treated, it allows me to find joy in the little things.”

That joy is infectious. It is why customers often bypass shorter, faster lines, just to stand in hers. They aren’t there for a receipt. They are there for Doreen’s kind words, a compliment, and even a blessing. She hands them out as freely as oxygen.

LEAVING THUMBPRINTS ON STRANGERS

The impact of Doreen’s presence is best measured by the hundreds of people she serves. One customer, deeply moved by a recent interaction, left a note that spoke for many: “There is something about that lady who checked out my daughter and me. She left a thumbprint on our lives that we will never forget because of her kindness.”

Another “regular“ put it plainly: “Employees like Doreen are what bring me back to this store. I hope she knows how much customers appreciate a warm welcome and a positive attitude.”

Doreen’s old school charm has a rare ability to stop a busy room. She looks at a stranger – perhaps having a bad day – and offers a bridge of genuine connection. She says, “Hey, you are pretty special, did you know that?” It’s a simple sentence that carries power.

Her blessings also have an impact. They became a habit Doreen acquired from regularly attending church. “Church was always one of my favorite places. Through my faith, I learned that it isn’t about me but those around me. I practice what I preach and treat others the way I would want to be treated.”

How does Doreen, who is repeatedly described as “outgoing, fun, and someone who gives great hugs”, keep that energy going every day?

“I manage to keep it up and stay positive because kind words and hugs go both ways. I ask the Lord how I can be a vessel for Him. I hope that my words, actions, and hugs can spread the Gospel of Jesus without always having to speak it. For others to ask ‘why’ gives me an opportunity to share who Jesus is and what he has done for me.”

THE RICHEST WOMAN IN TOWN

When a stranger approaches Doreen in her checkout line, she doesn’t view it as just another transaction. She sees an opportunity for a small miracle. She follows a personal philosophy rooted in her faith: Choice, Chance, and Change. “You must make the choice to be kind, take the chance to reach out, and through those actions, you facilitate the change the world so desperately needs,” she explains.

As she scans items and shares her grace, Doreen isn’t just working a shift; she is minting hope. She is a reminder that you don’t need a platform to be a leader, and you don’t need a fortune to be a philanthropist. You just need a register, a keen eye for the beauty of others, and the courage to tell them exactly what you see. If wealth is measured by the number of lives you have touched, by the smiles you have authored, and the “thumbprints” left on the hearts of strangers, then the math is simple. Doreen Van Zee is the richest woman in town.

“Yes, I am rich because I have God, my family, my grandkids, and my great-grandkids. My customers also make me rich. It changes my day when I can light up someone’s face. It makes me feel good that I gave them something to smile about.”

If she could give one blessing to the entire city of Sioux Falls right now, it would be the secret to her wealth. “Kindness goes a long way.” n

Excerpt from Fr. Paul Rutten’s homily on 12-29-24 at St. Mary’s Church

HAVE YOU SEEN JESUS?

The other day, I knew exactly where to find Jesus. I was exactly like many of you – on Monday, still shopping for Christmas. And I pull up to Scheels of all places, and I’m like, “Here we go!” But when I walked into Scheels, do you know who I saw? Doreen. Does anyone know Doreen? She’s the African American woman who always talks about Jesus. And when I got in line, I picked her line, and it was long because I wanted to see Jesus. And I knew in the midst of the chaos of this shopping and all of these people that Doreen didn’t care. And I wasn’t dressed like a priest, so it wasn’t like she knew who I was. And I said: “How are you?” and she said: “Blessed, so Blessed.” And I am like, “Oh my gosh, like how can that be?” …” I’m just always Blessed,” she said. She said, “How are you?” and I said, “I am Blessed, too.” I said, “What will you do for Christmas?” And she said, “I can’t wait to go to church to give the Lord the praise and glory that is due.” She asked: “What will you do for Christmas?” And I said: “I have to work; I am a priest.” And she said: “Praise God.” She said, “I have been praying this morning – Jesus, give me a sign that you are in my life.” And she said: “You’re it. Thank you for being the sign that Jesus is in my life.” And again, that moment. She’d been waiting – and she didn’t know what it would look like. She didn’t know when it would come, but she knew she could find Jesus. She asked if she could give me a hug. And I knew I could find Jesus because I saw Doreen.

THE SIOUX FALLS METRO "EDGE"

In the broader landscape of American entrepreneurship, South Dakota often faces an uphill battle, frequently ranked in the bottom tier of states for its total share of women-owned businesses. While state-level data from the 2024 SBA Profile shows women own approximately 42.6% of all South Dakota businesses, a significant portion of these remain non-employer firms. The real challenge across the state has been scaling these ventures into sustainable, high-growth businesses with a robust workforce.

However, the narrative shifts when focusing on the Sioux Falls metropolitan area, which represents 34% of the state’s population. This metro “edge” has allowed those woman-led companies to defy broader state trends. One of the most significant advantages for local women’s businesses is South Dakota’s favorable fiscal climate: women can directly leverage the state’s lower cost of living and the absence of both corporate and personal income taxes to reinvest more capital back into their operations.

Beyond the tax perks, the city’s strength lies in its high-impact networks. Organizations like SME Women in Business, Startup Sioux Falls, and EmBe provide specific mentorship, advocacy, and networking infrastructure necessary to help entrepreneurs transition from solo ventures to scalable employers. These groups act as a bridge, offering resources and a professional community needed to navigate the complexities of expansion.

While South Dakota’s overall statistics may suggest a struggle to keep pace with national averages, the Sioux Falls business community serves as a vital outlier. Here, the focus has shifted from simple entry-level entrepreneurship toward building an engine for regional job creation. By combining a pro-business tax structure with a localized, accessible support network, the metro area has crafted a blueprint for a more inclusive and sustainable economic future for local women business-owners. n

What's New: KidStrong

Building strong, confident, high-character kids who win at life

Between school drop-offs, endless snack requests, and the quiet pressure to “get it right,” today’s parents are raising children in a world that feels louder and more complex than ever. We want our kids to be strong—but not just physically. We want them confident, kind, and resilient. We want them to think critically, lead boldly, and care deeply.

That’s where KidStrong Sioux Falls comes in.

Designed for children aged 1–11, KidStrong is a sciencebased development program that is built around three core pillars: brain development, physical fitness, and character. The result? Stronger bodies, sharper minds, and more confident kids who are equipped to thrive—in the classroom, on the playground, and eventually in life.

Unlike traditional sports or activity programs, KidStrong blends movement with measurable milestones. Each week’s curriculum is intentionally designed to build cognitive skills, emotional regulation, teamwork, leadership, and grit.

A MOM WHO SAW THE DIFFERENCE

For owner Jonelle Clow, KidStrong isn’t just a business—it’s personal.

“I first experienced KidStrong when we were living in Gilbert, Arizona,” she shares. “I enrolled my daughter before we made the decision to move our family back to the Midwest. I saw firsthand the difference it made in her confidence, social skills, and physical abilities.”

When the family relocated to Sioux Falls, the nearest KidStrong location was three hours away. Rather than give it up, Jonelle made a bold decision—she opened one here.

“I chose to put the career I loved on pause so I could bring this opportunity to other families,” she says. “Being a mom is the most important role I have. And now more than ever, our kids need the tools to grow stronger in character, cognitive ability, and resilience in the world they’re growing up in.”

It’s a sentiment many parents feel deeply: we’re not just raising kids—we’re raising future adults in an age of screens, anxiety, and constant comparison.

NOT JUST A DROP-OFF PROGRAM

Located at 2556 South Lorraine Place in Sioux Falls, KidStrong operates on a membership model and offers a free trial for families who want to experience it firsthand.

And yes—if your child clings to your leg on that first visit? That’s normal.“ A first visit can feel intimidating,” Jonelle says. “It’s completely natural for kids to hesitate. What’s important is not giving up right away. The results are incredible—not just for the kids, but for parents, too.”

Coaches engage families throughout class, encouraging involvement and even celebrating milestones together. It’s structured, intentional, and designed to strengthen the parent-child connection—not replace it.

MORE THAN A WEEKLY CLASS

KidStrong programming evolves weekly, guided by two highly trained coaches who lead children through eight core training blocks.

In addition to weekly classes, KidStrong offers camps during school breaks and private parties. One standout feature? Families rent the entire space for their celebration— no overlapping parties, no chaos, just your crew.

KIDSTRONG DELIVERS REAL RESULTS:

• 96% of kids experience increased self-confidence

• 88% of parents report improved social skills

• 85% of kids say it’s more fun than other programs

As parents, we’re constantly asking, Am I doing enough?  Programs like KidStrong offer something powerful: intentional support.

Because raising strong kids isn’t about perfection. It’s about consistency. Community. And giving them tools that last far beyond childhood.
