“For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord.

Love in EVERY BOX

HOLIDAY GIFT GIVING BETWEEN COUPLES

The holiday season has a way of bringing couples closer together. Amid the twinkling lights and cozy nights, it’s a time to reflect on the year shared and express love in ways that feel personal and sincere. Gift giving between partners isn’t about extravagance—it’s about connection. Whether the relationship is new or well-seasoned, the right gift can speak volumes.

Some of the most cherished gifts are those that are handmade. A handwritten letter, a photo album of shared memories, or a playlist curated with songs that tell your story can be more meaningful than anything bought in a store. These gifts carry the weight of time and intention, showing your partner that you’ve thought deeply about what makes your bond unique.

For couples who value purpose over possessions, giving in each other’s name can be a powerful act of generosity. Donating to a cause your partner cares about shows that you see what matters to them— and that you support it. Whether it’s a local shelter, a national nonprofit, or a community initiative, this kind of gift deepens emotional intimacy and shared values. Volunteering together during the holidays can also become a treasured tradition, turning giving into a shared experience.

Of course, not every gift needs to be poetic or philanthropic. Sometimes, the most appreciated presents are the ones that make everyday life sweeter. A cozy blanket, a new coffee maker, or a subscription box tailored to your partner’s interests can show attentiveness and care. These gifts say, “I notice what brings you comfort and joy,” and they often become part of your shared routines.

Then there are the grand gestures—the surprises that take your breath away. A weekend getaway, a piece of jewelry, or even a new car wrapped in a bow can mark milestones or celebrate a year of growth and love. These gifts aren’t about price; they’re about impact. They create moments that linger long after the holidays have passed. Even the most extravagant gift can be made deeply personal with a handwritten note, a custom engraving, or a thoughtful reveal.

Ultimately, holiday gift giving between couples is less about the item and more about the message. It’s a chance to say, “I know you. I love you. I’m grateful for you.” Whether you’re crafting something by hand, giving back in their honor, or splurging on a dream gift, the goal is the same: to celebrate your connection in a way that feels true to who you are together. n

THE HEART OF FAMILY AND WEALTH

Defining What Truly Matters

The holidays are about more than delicious food and twinkle lights - they’re one of the rare times when the people you love most are gathered in one place.

Between laughter and dessert, it can also be the perfect time to talk about what your family stands for in a way that connects generations and brings meaning to what you’ve built.

When you think about and talk about wealth, it’s easy to think of bank accounts or investments. But true family wealth reaches far beyond numbers on a statement.

It includes your time, reputation, relationships, and your ability to make a positive impact on the world. Real wealth is about using what you have to enrich your life—and the lives of others—in ways that truly matter.

Creating a Family Wealth Blueprint can help you put those values into words. It’s a simple yet powerful way to express how your family wants to live, give, and grow together.

“When families take time to define what truly matters, it brings a sense of confidence and togetherness that lasts far beyond the holiday season,” shares Jill Mollner, MBA, CFP®, Wealth Advisor at Cornerstone Financial Solutions.

Consider setting aside time for a family meal or a relaxed morning coffee to spark the discussion. You might even hold an “official” family meeting, complete with a whiteboard or note-taker.

If the question “How do we want to use our time, resources, and influence to make a difference?” feels too big, start smaller. The goal is to begin the conversation—there’s no need to get it perfect.

Ask questions that spark reflection and connection for all ages—simple enough for kids, meaningful for adults:

• What is worth saving for?

• What makes our family unique or special?

• Describe a time you didn’t have enough money. Or, tell about a time you really wanted something and had to wait or work for it.

• How do you like to give—through money, time, or creativity? Or what’s your favorite way to do something nice for someone else?

Jill Mollner MBA, CFP® Branch Manager Wealth Advisor, RJFS

You can also have each person select their top five values from a list that might include love, kindness, hard work, adventure, generosity, or faith.

Once you’ve identified a few key themes, put them in writing. Keep it short,

Place it somewhere visible as a reminder of what matters most, and revisit it as

When your Family Wealth Blueprint feels complete, it is time to share it with your financial advisor. This step helps ensure your financial plan reflects the goals, values, and vision that emerged from your family’s discussions.

This season, give your family one of the greatest gifts of all—clarity, connection, and a shared sense of purpose.

If you’d like guidance in having these meaningful conversations, schedule a visit with the professionals at Cornerstone Financial Solutions by calling 605.357.8553 or emailing cfsteam@mycfsgroup.com to learn more.

Dermaplaning: DERMAPLANING

THE CUTTING EDGE OF FACIAL TREATMENTS

With skincare regimens, the “clean girl” aesthetic is paramount, and fresh, dewy skin is more in than ever. Exfoliation methods are key to achieving the look. There are many options, such as scrubs and peels, but the one method trending hard is dermaplaning.

DERMAPLANING

Dermaplaning is a process that uses a singleblade razor tool to gently remove the top layer of skin, resulting in deep exfoliation. An additional bonus of dermaplaning is the removal of peach fuzz. As the skin is dermaplaned, the buildup of dead skin cells and unwanted hair disappears. It is a way to smooth out your skin, allowing makeup and skincare products to go on more evenly. Your skin will also have a brighter appearance and smoother feel.

In a spa treatment setting, a dermatologist or esthetician will use a tool akin to a small scalpel, but no fear - Dermaplaning is a painless process. If you feel like putting your face in the hands of a professional, you can schedule a dermaplaning appointment at a medical or facial spa.

If you are trying to decide to self-dermaplane at home, it is advantageous that you consult with a professional beforehand, as there can be adverse reactions. They can assess your skin and provide proper instructions for performing it. Irritation or cuts can occur if too much pressure is applied, and there is a risk of infection if the blade or workspace is not clean. Also, at-home dermaplaning may not have consistent results compared to a professional application.

When using a dermaplaning tool, make certain it is sterile with a disposable blade and follow the proper technique. Glide it downward on a thoroughly cleansed face at a 45-degree angle. Techniques may vary depending on the kind of tool you have, and you may use a serum if desired. The process is safe for most skin types. Just keep an eye on it and take a break if you have any extra sensitivity.

A dermaplaning appointment typically takes 30 to 60 minutes with no downtime, making it a relatively low-maintenance treatment. After dermaplaning, apply gentle moisturizers, limit sun exposure, and avoid harsh products. The treatment is gentle; however, you are removing a thin layer of skin, making you more susceptible to sun damage. You should also go light on your makeup and apply some sunscreen to protect that fresh face. n

Luxury CREATING QUIET

The quiet luxury movement is a fashion trend this fall and winter. A wardrobe of quiet luxury reflects the individual needs and inclinations of each wearer. It's not flashy. Instead, the clothes tend to be high-quality, timeless basics that fit well and have subtle details without loud logos. Sophisticated yet understated, combining statement pieces with accent accessories and purposeful color choices becomes a true reflection of personal style.

BROWN IS THE "NEW NEUTRAL" COLOR-WISE - This fall/winter season follows similar color palettes of warm, earthy tones with some surprising pops: rich chocolate brown, like mocha mousse, has now become a key neutral. Bright accents that utilize chili pepper red or true orange give energy.

TAILORED VESTS - The button-front, suit-style vest is replacing the traditional top. Layered over a crisp button-down shirt, this piece is key for achieving the sought-after menswear-inspired silhouette.

RELAXED AND ELEVATED JEANS - The skinny jean is officially on hiatus. Denim is embracing comfort and volume.

DARK WASHES - Look for dark indigo or experiment with colored denims in browns and olive greens.

BARREL AND WIDE-LEG - Barrel-leg jeans (curved through the thigh, tapered at the ankle) have become the dominant silhouette this season.

POWER PRINT DRESSES AND BLOUSES - The shift toward bolder prints is the key reaction to the "Quiet Luxury" movement.

BOLD PRINTS - Dramatic florals set against dark backgrounds, reminiscent of graphic geometrics from the '70s. Maximalist animal prints, especially leopard and snake prints, have gained popularity.

CREATING SYNERGY WITH FOOTWEAR - As for footwear, it's a flexible mix: sneaker trends lean retro and practical with low-profile or chunky styles. And for laid-back cozy wear, Birkenstock-style sandals have become the shoes of choice. Yet Ugg slip-ons or mini boots keep returning to style. Everyone needs good boots. Low-heel boots made of high-quality leather offer style, comfort, and versatility. n

SHARING HOLIDAY SPARKLE FROM THE DIAMOND ROOM BY SPEKTOR

Gorgeous gifting has never been so easy—or so unforgettable.

Finding the perfect gift for the special people in your life can feel daunting, especially when they seem to have everything. That’s why The Diamond Room by Spektor has made it simple—and spectacular—with their curated Holiday Lookbook, designed to help you choose an unforgettable piece of fine jewelry for everyone on your list.

A trusted name in Sioux Falls since 1996, The Diamond Room was founded by Alon Spektor and Dave Anderson, who combined decades of expertise and a shared passion for exceptional craftsmanship. Before opening the retail showroom, Alon operated a wholesale diamond business serving retailers across the Midwest. Today, he celebrates more than 40 years in the diamond industry, continuing a proud legacy of excellence and trust.

“Jewelry can say so many different things,” shares Emily Arteman, Director of Marketing and Sales. “Purchasing a piece of fine jewelry is a beautiful way to show someone just how much they mean to you. Whether it’s a first pair of diamond studs, a fashion

ring, or a layering necklace—it’s bound to make them feel special and spoiled.”

And the sparkle isn’t just for couples. Parents often mark milestones by gifting their children with fine jewelry—think diamond studs for daughters, or watches and chains for sons. Birthstone jewelry remains a meaningful favorite, while timeless pieces like gold earrings and layered necklaces delight mothers, and leather or stainless-steel bracelets and watches make thoughtful gifts for fathers.

“Diamond studs are the gift that keeps on giving because you can upgrade them as often as you’d like,” Emily adds. “We offer a lifetime trade-up on all diamonds, so it’s truly the perfect gift.”

The Diamond Room is also renowned for its custom designs, all crafted in-house by two expert goldsmiths. According to Emily, most custom work involves bridal jewelry or reimagining heirloom pieces. “For bridal clients, it’s often about creating something truly unique—one of a kind,” she explains. “For those

inheriting jewelry, it’s about giving cherished pieces new life, redesigned to reflect your own personal style.”

Even more impressive, custom doesn’t have to be costly. “When creating a custom engagement ring or wedding band, the price is often comparable to retail—or even less,” Emily says. “And when reworking heirloom pieces, it’s significantly more affordable than purchasing a new piece of jewelry that doesn’t have the same sentimental value.”

This holiday season, The Diamond Room by Spektor invites you to celebrate the magic of giving at their Holiday Open House on December 4 from 5–8 p.m. Enjoy an evening of sparkling jewelry, delectable refreshments, and festive inspiration inside their newly remodeled showroom.

To explore their Holiday Lookbook or learn more, visit thediamondroom.com or discover them on Instagram and Facebook.

Visit our newly remodeled showroom featuring Facet Barcelona and Allison Kauffman collections. Enjoy refreshments by Chef Dom’s and fill out your holiday wish list in style!

THE ENDURING A PASSION FOR WALLPAPER

Pattern

by Dylan Hillestad, Sioux Falls Real Estate Photography

From the street, the ranch home looks like other ranches built in Sioux Falls during the late 1970s – a single-story, wide, low-slung structure defined by clean lines. It sits peacefully on a lot shaded by pines, the newly white-washed brick façade with its black garage doors suggesting a home dedicated to sensible neutrals and timeless design. But the moment the front door swings open, that impression is shattered by a kaleidoscope of color, texture, and patterns meticulously curated room by room over more than three decades.

Welcome to the home of Gloria and Norm Rons, a living, breathing monument to Gloria’s unwavering passion. While the rest of the world rotates through cycles of minimalist white, industrial gray, and soft taupe, Gloria has dedicated her aesthetic life to papering the world inside her walls. She estimates she has wallpapered seventy-five percent of her rooms, and each one is a world unto itself: homey, eclectic, and flowing with color.

Gloria moved into the house in 1991, and though she has seen every conceivable design trend come and go, her philosophy remains gloriously fixed. “I have always loved wallpaper,” she says, the statement delivered with the gentle finality of an undisputed truth. “There is just something about the depth and the finish. It gives a room personality that paint just can’t replicate.”

THE PHILOSOPHY OF HAPPINESS

To understand the house is to understand Gloria’s relationship with color, a relationship that is instinctive, joyful, and completely uncompromising.

“I love color, and if I see something I like, it sometimes becomes inspiration,” Gloria explains while standing next to her bar. The lower-level nook with its bold greens, emeralds, and blacks battles for attention with a collection of old glassware found at a Tea thrift shop.

“The old bar glassware became my starting point for this space,” she explains. “The wallpaper pattern I discovered in a magazine. From there, I knew I wanted the “look” of a 60s-style cocktail lounge with a picture of Dean Martin.

EVERY ROOM IS DIFFERENT. AND THEY ARE ALL MY FAVORITES.

Though the space is small, a lot of thought and creativity went into designing it.”

In an age where interior design trends focus on resale and broad appeal, Gloria’s process is entirely self-referential. She doesn’t shop for patterns that match, but for patterns that resonate. The result is a home that feels less like a design statement and more like a highly detailed autobiography. As she speaks about her house, she smiles. “Everything about it is so me!”

This commitment to personal joy explains why the house, despite its dramatic use of wallpaper, never feels overwhelming or excessive. Instead, each room feels intensely welcoming and portrays a sense of warmth and history.

OLD FARMHOUSE INSPIRATION

The mid-century ranch layout itself provides the perfect canvas for Gloria’s design tastes. The compartmentalized rooms – a hallmark of pre-open-concept architecture - allow for each pattern to tell its own story without clashing directly with its neighbor.

“I grew up on a farm with 10 siblings. Because the walls in our farmhouse were uneven, wallpapering was a practical solution to disguise the imperfections that paint couldn’t cover. I know that is when I fell in love with wallpaper. My house has been a perfect place for me to express myself.”

Gloria’s walls speak throughout the house. Bathrooms are bold, and colors change from room to room; there are lots of flowers and birds, but no gray. Her office is a mural. The entire house is cozy yet uncluttered. She credits longtime Sioux Falls interior designer Mary Kelly, who listened, matched her tastes, and found the perfect patterns.

“Every room is different,” she says, “And they are all my favorite.”

AND THEN THERE IS CHRISTMAS.

Gloria’s house takes on a further dimension as she prepares for Christmas with her family. She has four children and ten grandchildren.

Her dedication to Christmas is legendary, but her true skill lies not in the quantity of her decorations but in their perfect integration. For Gloria, festive isn’t chaotic: it’s cohesive. Her decorating centers around her four large Christmas trees. The gift-wrapped presents become part of her early decorating and are just as important as the trees.

“I search out the gift wrap, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. I want everything to blend, so the right Christmas paper is important for the room as the tree that presents sit under.”

Her decorating philosophy treats the fully dressed trees and gifts beneath them not as temporary additions, but as a seasonal extension of the home’s existing, diverse wallpaper palettes. She ensures that each room maintains its individual character. The trees and gifts truly act as the final, shimmering layer, resulting in a house that is overwhelmingly festive, yet perfectly, harmoniously blended from corner to corner.

THE ART OF STAYING PUT

In a world addicted to renovation and endless updates, perhaps the most remarkable thing about Gloria’s wallpaper obsession is her fidelity to her choices. She seldom makes changes to the wallpaper.

The permanence is not due to a lack of energy, but a profound satisfaction. When a pattern is truly loved, why replace it?

Her wallpaper choices act as anchors in time, each room tied to an era of her life and her collection habits. She remembers what went into finding each pattern and design.

The consistent use of wallpaper also allows for eclectic collections of furniture and art to co-exist in a unified yet constantly shifting environment. The walls are a high-voltage backdrop that prevents the collections from feeling museum-like or scattered; instead, they are woven into the fabric of the setting.

Leaving the vibrant interior and stepping back onto the front stoop, the sheer dedication required to transform a simple ranch into a three-dimensional cabinet of curiosities is evident. Gloria Rons hasn’t merely decorated her home; she has created a rich, textural world designed solely to nourish her own creative spirit. It is a powerful reminder that the best design is the one that is truly candid and unapologetically personal.

As for any more papering projects? “It’s my pantry,” she says. “I’ve already chosen the wallpaper; it’s pomegranates, and it’s bright - the colors are orange and yellow and pink. I am ready to get started!” n

HOLIDAY FOODS

THAT ARE (AND AREN’T) SAFE FOR PETS

The holidays are approaching, and that means more time with family and friends, and – of course – food! As tempting as it can be to share your holiday treats with your furry family members, not everything on the holiday table is safe for pets. Here’s a guide to help you know which holiday foods are safe to share and which are better to keep out of paw’s reach this holiday season!

SAFE (IN MODERATION)

1. Plain Turkey or Chicken: I recommend a small amount of plain, cooked turkey or boneless, skinless, unseasoned chicken breast.

2. Sweet Potatoes and Pumpkin: plain, cooked sweet potatoes or pumpkin (even canned) are actually rich in fiber and vitamins. Make sure to serve them without any sugar, butter, or marshmallows, as this can lead to pancreatitis and an unpleasant visit to the ER!

3. Green Beans and Carrots: low-calorie snacks (yes, please!) that are sure to grab your pet’s attention. Serve them plain -  steamed without any added seasonings.

4. Cranberries (Unsweetened): A few cooked cranberries are fine, but please avoid cranberry sauce, which can contain xylitol, a toxic sweetener.

UNSAFE FOODS TO KEEP OFF THE PET MENU

1. Turkey Skin, Bones, and Gravy: these can cause pancreatitis or a foreign body obstruction. These can potentially cause  hospitalization for your pet or require surgery.

2. Stuffing: Often contains onion, garlic, and spices – all of these are toxic!

3. Chocolate and Desserts: These can cause seizures or liver failure.

4. Grapes and Raisins: These can cause kidney failure in dogs – no fruitcake for the dogs!

5. Fatty Foods and Butter: Again, these can cause pancreatitis and an unplanned (or not so cheap) visit to your local ER.

Sharing the holidays with your furry companions makes the season more special, but keeping them safe is the best gift you can give them. So please, keep leftovers out of reach, have safe treats on hand, and educate your guests. I hope this guide has been helpful and will ensure that you, your family, and your pet(s) enjoy a happy, healthy holiday together. n

NO GYM, NO GEAR, NO PROBLEM!

THE POWER OF BODYWEIGHT WORKOUTS AT HOME

Forget the overpriced gym memberships, the intimidating machines, and the resistance bands tangled in your closet. You don’t need any of it. The truth is, your body is the best piece of workout equipment you’ll ever own.

Bodyweight workouts are simple, effective, AND best of all, free. Whether you’re in a studio apartment or a spacious living room, you can build strength, boost cardio, and feel amazing— without setting foot in a gym or buying expensive equipment.

STRENGTH MOVES YOU CAN DO ANYWHERE

The following bodyweight exercises use your own weight to build muscle, improve balance, and increase endurance.

SQUATS. They target your thighs, glutes, and core. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart. Lower your hips like you’re sitting in an invisible chair, then rise. Add a pulse or hold for extra burn.

LUNGES. Great for legs, glutes, and stability. Step forward with one leg as if proposing, bend both knees to 90 degrees, then push back. Alternate between legs.

PLANKS. The silent killer of core workouts. Start in a similar position as a push-up, then work down to rest on your elbows and forearms. Your body should be in a straight line from head to heels. Hold the plank as long as possible without your back sagging. Start with 30 seconds and increase your time from there. Bonus: Planks also work your shoulders and back.

PUSH-UPS. A classic for a reason: they strengthen the chest, shoulders, triceps, and core. Lower your chest, keeping your elbows close, push back up. Modify with knees down if needed.

SHOULDER PRESSES. No dumbbells? No problem. Use soup cans or water bottles. Press overhead, then lower slowly. Hello, shoulders.

CARDIO THAT DOESN’T REQUIRE A TREADMILL

You don’t need fancy machines to get your heart racing. The following moves will boost cardio, burn calories, and energize your day.

JUMPING JACKS. Jump while spreading arms and legs, then return.

BURPEES. Squat, hands to the floor, jump back to a plank, do a push-up (optional), jump back to a squat, and leap up. Brutal, but worth it.

RUNNING (IN PLACE OR OUTDOORS). Simple, free, and a great way to burn calories!

SHADOW BOXING. Throw punches in the air while bouncing lightly. Stress relief meets cardio.

SMART TIPS FOR HOME WORKOUTS

FORM IS FIRST, ALWAYS. No matter which moves you choose, proper form is everything. It’s the difference between “I feel amazing” and “Why does my spleen hurt?” Search online for videos from trusted sources to nail your technique. Your joints will thank you. And remember, it’s always wise to check with your doctor before starting any new routine.

WARM UP & COOL DOWN. Stretches are a must.

MIX IT UP. Combine strength and cardio for a balanced routine.

Any of these bodyweight workouts can be combined with a health club membership or exercise machines for maximum benefit; however, if you can’t afford the fancy machines or don’t have space for the treadmill, and if you can’t get to the gym, it’s great to know about the magic of bodyweight workouts.

So roll off the couch, roll your eyes at the thought of planks, and roll with it. Your home is your gym. Your body is your gear. And your motivation? That’s all you, legend. n

HOLIDAYS AND HEARING LOSS

LET MIDWEST ENT & ALLERGY HELP YOU STAY CONNECTED THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Said the night wind to the little lamb, "Do you hear what I hear?" Unfortunately, many cannot hear what others hear, as 1 in 8 people in the U.S. ages 12 or older has hearing loss in both ears, and about 28.8 million adults could benefit from using hearing aids. South Dakota resident Kim Walder is one of those adults.

"While I was a teacher in my early 40s, it became increasingly difficult to hear my students," Kim recalls. "Being a good listener has always been important to me; I realized how only picking up bits and pieces of conversations was separating me from what I valued most in life." She reached out to her friend Bob Froke, an audiologist at Midwest ENT & Allergy. An evaluation revealed significant hearing loss, and Kim received her first set of devices. "I could immediately hear my students and the people in my life. Now, as a grandma, I have the joy of hearing my grandchildren, which is everything to me."

Bob reflects on Kim's two-decade-long hearing journey by saying, "I admire Kim's motivation to stay connected to her family." Hearing plays a powerful role in connection. As Greg Danielson, M.D., of Midwest ENT & Allergy explains, “When you cannot hear, you tend to isolate and even avoid friends and family.”

Isolation can hasten the effects of dementia and other cognitive decline, and Dr. Danielson advocates for intervention of these conditions by explaining, "Treating hearing loss is the only known way to lower your risk of dementia and cognitive decline." Many people hesitate to address hearing loss because of the stigma attached to it, but Dr. Danielson reminds patients that getting tested is an important first step toward reconnecting with the world around them.

Hearing loss can be gradual. Those who continually ask others to repeat themselves, need the TV volume set to high levels that disturb others, or find difficulty remaining involved in entire conversations, should consider scheduling a test. According to Bob, testing can be rather revealing, as he advises, "You don't always know what you may be missing until we show you."

The team approach at Midwest ENT & Allergy brings audiologists, physicians, and advanced practice providers under one roof to best serve a vast array of patient needs. “Our coordinated teamwork is what really sets us apart,” Dr. Danielson notes.

As we prepare ourselves for the wonderful sounds and sights of the holiday season, those who have addressed their hearing loss can look forward to spending time with their precious loved ones. Kim is especially grateful for her hearing aids and the services of Midwest ENT & Allergy that she has received over the years. "Sounds now seem so much more natural than when I started with hearing aids 20 years ago. If you tried them a while ago, it's time to try them again!" n

REDEFINING AGING: LOOK YOUNGER, FEEL STRONGER, AND LIVE LONGER

A LONGEVITY-FOCUSED APPROACH TO HEALTH, BEAUTY, AND PREVENTION.

AT ENCOMPASS WELLNESS & AESTHETICS, health care is more than treating illness—it’s about preventing it and helping people thrive at every stage of life. This forward-thinking wellness clinic combines evidence-driven longevity care with personalized plans, guiding patients to balance hormones, manage weight safely, and prevent the chronic diseases that often come with aging.

“Prevention is the highest form of care,” says the practitioners at Encompass Wellness. “When we correct underlying imbalances, we don’t just add years to life—we add life to years.”

Rather than masking symptoms, Encompass looks deeper to uncover the why behind fatigue, weight gain, mood changes, or brain fog. Through comprehensive lab testing, hormone analysis, nutrition support, and lifestyle guidance, patients finally find the answers— and results—they’ve been searching for.

One inspiring success story comes from a patient who lost over 100 pounds through Encompass’s medical weight-loss and hormone-optimization program. With consistent support, she not only achieved her goal weight but also came off blood-pressure and cholesterol medications—proof that restoring balance truly transforms health.

Another patient shared that after beginning hormone replacement therapy (HRT), her DEXA bone scan showed complete reversal of osteopenia—a powerful example of how hormone therapy can restore vitality and strength from the inside out.

HORMONES: THE FOUNDATION OF HEALTHY AGING

Hormones act as the body’s chemical messengers, influencing energy, memory, sleep, bone density, and heart health. As estrogen, testosterone, and thyroid levels naturally decline the risk for disease rises.

For years, many women and providers avoided hormone therapy due to the FDA’s former black-box warning on estrogen, which created fear of breast cancer, dementia, and heart disease. That warning has recently been lifted, after studies confirmed that hormone replacement therapy protects the bones, brain, and heart—not harm them.

The truth is sobering: 1 in 3 women will die from heart disease after menopause, and 30% of men and women who suffer a hip fracture will die within a year. Balanced hormones can dramatically reduce these risks by supporting cardiovascular health, maintaining bone density, and improving mental clarity.

Just as importantly, estradiol helps prevent the loss of collagen and elastin, the key proteins that keep skin firm, smooth, and youthful. By restoring hormone balance, Encompass Wellness helps patients feel better, age slower, and glow from within.

YOUR PARTNER IN LONGEVITY

Encompass Wellness & Aesthetics is a comprehensive destination for health, wellness, and aesthetics— where evidence-based preventive medicine meets advanced aesthetics. FINDING HER VOICE: AN INSPIRING JOURNEY

Hair and makeup by Megan Bertsch Beauty

PASSION, PURPOSE, PERSEVERANCE

In the small town of Canton, South Dakota, where everyone knows everyone and the prairie horizon seems endless, a young girl named Vanessa Anderson-Smith grew up believing that kindness and hard work could build a meaningful life. Today, she’s a respected speech-language pathologist, business owner, educator, wife, and mother, known not only for her expertise but for her unwavering compassion. Her story is one of perseverance, passion, and purpose; her journey demonstrates for women everywhere that you can build a life you love by following your own voice.

ROOTS IN SMALL-TOWN STRENGTH

Vanessa was raised in a close-knit family with her identical twin sister, whom she calls her “built-in best friend.” Her parents modeled faith, integrity, and community involvement. Her father served as president of the local bank, a role that made Vanessa proud but also cautious about business ownership.

“I remember seeing how much time and pressure came with running a business,” she said. “I always thought, ‘That’s not for me.’”

Along with a strong work ethic, Vanessa inherited her father’s steady leadership and her mother’s nurturing spirit. The Andersons were the kind of family that believed in shared meals, travel adventures, and giving back to their community. Vanessa credits that environment for teaching her the value of connection, which would later become central to her professional calling.

DISCOVERING HER PURPOSE

In high school, Vanessa was drawn to English, journalism, and theatre. She edited the yearbook, wrote for the school paper, and thrived in storytelling. At first, she dreamed of being a teacher or writer. But college brought an unexpected turn.

While studying at Augustana University, she took a communications class that changed everything. Vanessa explains, “I wrote a paper about language acquisition in deaf babies and became fascinated with how the brain and body work together to create speech. That’s when I found speech pathology—it was like discovering the intersection of language, science, and heart.”

After earning her bachelor’s degree, Vanessa went on to complete her Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of South Dakota in 2010. Her early career took her on long drives through rural nursing homes, helping elderly patients relearn how to speak or swallow after strokes. “It wasn’t glamorous,” she admits. “But it was meaningful. Every mile, every patient—it all mattered.”

BUILDING SOMETHING OF HER OWN

By 2013, Vanessa had married Ryan Smith and was working for the Dell Rapids School District and contracting part-time with South Dakota’s Birth-to-Three program. It was during this time that her career took another surprising turn—toward entrepreneurship.

“There was more need than I could meet through the school system,” she said. “So, I started taking on a few patients privately. Before I knew it, I had a business.”

With the help of Ryan, she founded Anderson-Smith Speech Therapy, initially operating from her kitchen table. “We had one highchair, a few flashcards, and a lot of determination,” Vanessa recalled with a smile. “My husband believed in me so much that he said, ‘Let’s use our savings and invest in you instead of the 401(k).’ That support meant everything.”

Her practice grew quickly. Parents began referring others. Children made progress where others had once lost hope. Vanessa’s approach—rooted in connection and curiosity—was transforming lives.

A TURNING POINT IN PRACTICE AND PERSPECTIVE

Around this time, Vanessa trained with Talk Tools, a global leader in oral placement therapy. The training introduced her to a muscle-based approach to speech and feeding disorders that changed how she worked.

“I realized speech isn’t just about language—it’s about the body,” she explained. “When you strengthen the muscles, you change how someone communicates and eats. It’s incredible.”

Her expertise earned her a position as a Talk Tools Instructor, teaching practitioners around the world. Yet, despite her growing recognition, Vanessa remained grounded in her mission. One story stays with her: a young boy with brain cancer who learned to express pain and comfort because of her therapy.

“From the hospital, his mom told me after his cancer diagnosis, ‘He couldn’t tell us where it hurt before—but now he can.’ That’s when I realized this work is sacred,” Vanessa said softly. “Helping someone find their voice is giving them dignity.”

THE DOCTORATE DREAM AND THE POWER OF PERSEVERANCE

Even with a thriving practice and young children at home, Vanessa’s hunger to learn never stopped. She enrolled at Northwestern University to pursue her Doctorate in Speech-Language Pathology.

Those years were challenging and beautiful all at once, as Vanessa describes, “I was running a business, teaching continuing education, raising two boys, building a house, and recovering from an ankle injury.” She continues, laughing, “It was chaos—but the kind that shapes you.”

Her husband and family became her foundation. “It takes a village to raise Vanessa,” she joked. “Ryan cooked, my sister and parents babysat, and my friends cheered me

on through every late-night study session.” Walking across the stage to receive her doctorate was an impactful moment for her as Vanessa acknowledged, “I wanted my sons to see that women can do hard things—and that education doesn’t stop when you become a mom.”

FAMILY, FOOD, AND FINDING BALANCE

Vanessa’s life now centers on faith, family, and intentional living. She and Ryan are raising two sons—Drake (7) and Brooks (3)—in a home filled with love, laughter, and the smell of homemade pizza as the busy mom delights in cooking for her family.

Her twin sister lives nearby and also has a three-year-old. The toddler cousins are so close in age that they are affectionately called “identical cousins.” Weekends might find the family hosting friends, traveling, or escaping to downtown Minneapolis to attend a Vikings game. “I’ve learned that selfcare isn’t selfish,” she said. “When I rest and recharge, I’m a better mom, wife, and therapist.”

A VOICE THAT LIFTS OTHERS

Today, Anderson-Smith’s private practice continues to flourish by serving children and families across South Dakota and beyond. Realizing the exponential impact these services can have as more specialists enter the field, she devotes additional professional time to mentoring young therapists, teaching internationally, and always leads with empathy and humility.

Her philosophy is simple but powerful: Everyone has something to say—our job is to help them say it.

“I’ve worked with children who couldn’t communicate for years,” Vanessa discloses. “When they finally say ‘Mama’ or ‘I love you,’ it’s like watching a miracle. Those are the moments that remind me why I do this.”

As for what’s next, Vanessa isn’t chasing titles or accolades. She’s focused on pouring into people—her patients, students, and family. “I just want to keep showing women that they can build a life that’s full and meaningful,” she said. “You can have a career, a family, and peace. You just have to define success for yourself.”

THE LEGACY OF A LIFE WELL-SPOKEN

From her small-town beginnings to her multi-national impact, Vanessa Anderson-Smith’s journey proves that courage often starts quietly, and opportunities can be found—in the heart of someone who chooses to keep showing up.

She’s a living reminder that finding your voice isn’t just about speaking; rather, it’s about listening, believing, and daring to live out your purpose with grace.

Vanessa concludes, “I never set out to build a business or earn a doctorate. I just followed the work that made my heart beat faster. That’s how I found my voice—and helping others find theirs is the greatest joy of all.” n

CELEBRATING

WOMEN IN BUSINESS

On every corner of today’s business landscape, women are not just stepping into leadership – they are reshaping it. They influence expanding boardrooms, redefine strategy, and prove that when women lead, organizations thrive in fresh and unexpected ways.

Women often approach decision-making with a blend of intuition, collaboration, and long-range thinking that strengthens teams. In contrast to traditional, decisive, linear leadership, women frequently bring a more holistic lens – one that values context, relationships, and the ripple effect of every choice. These traits don’t make one style better than the other; it simply means that when they are present, businesses gain richer perspectives.

Women leaders tend to emphasize inclusivity, listening deeply to voices that aren’t always the loudest in the room. This knack for gathering diverse insights fuels creativity and drives intelligent innovation. Women often take a “peoplefirst” approach to problem-solving, recognizing that culture and morale can drive measurable results. And, in times of uncertainty, their ability to balance courage with empathy becomes a powerful stabilizing force.

From entrepreneurs building companies at kitchen tables to executives steering global brands, women continue to redefine what business success looks like. They lead with resilience, emotional intelligence, and a steady belief that progress is a shared endeavor. Their presence doesn’t just change the narrative – it elevates it, making the future of business brighter and beautifully more balanced. These women deserve celebration; in our community, in our friendships, with our support, patronage, and willingness to recognize and refer. n

KIM ERKONEN, AWMA™, CLU®

For Kim Erkonen, Financial Advisor at Baird Private Wealth Management, money has always carried meaning far beyond dollars and cents – it's a reflection of hard work, resilience, and possibility. After losing her father at a very young age to suicide, she watched her mother navigate the challenges of raising three children and managing finances alone. Those early experiences inspired Kim's deep respect for perseverance and shaped her lifelong passion for helping women feel confident and in control of their financial futures.

Putting herself through college while working three jobs taught Kim the value of every dollar earned – and instilled a work ethic that continues to guide her today. She believes that when women understand their finances, they gain not just financial independence, but true freedom and peace of mind.

A Brandon resident for over 27 years, Kim and her husband raised their four children there and now enjoy life as empty nesters – sharing adventures, hikes, and plenty of attention to their very spoiled black lab, Gus. Deeply committed to giving back, Kim has opened her home to kids in need, served on several non-profit boards, and alongside her family ran a Christian-based non-profit in the Brandon schools for more than a decade.

Professionally, Kim is dedicated to continuous learning, pursuing advanced education to serve her clients best. But at her core, her purpose remains simple: to help women build financial confidence so they can live abundantly – in wealth, purpose, and life.

JESSICA POLLEMA KASSIDY VAN GINKEL

Two and a half years ago, friends Jessica Pollema and Kassidy Van Ginkel took a leap of faith that would change their lives and continue a legacy. The pair purchased The Economy Shop in Rock Valley, IA, from Kassidy's mother, Shelly Munneke, who had owned and managed the consignment store for over 33 years.

For Jessica and Kassidy, the transition from employees to owners came with both excitement and uncertainty. "We spent years learning the business from Shelly," Kassidy recalls. "But stepping into ownership meant making the business our own while honoring what she created."

Since taking the reins, the duo has infused The Economy Shop with fresh energy, expanding the inventory of favorite brands and styles and introducing new ways to engage the community. Online sales have grown through their Facebook Group, The Economy Shop – First Chance Glance, with merchandise shipped to over 20 states. They also offer a personal shopping service - customers can call or message them with items they are looking for, and the merchandise is available when they arrive.

Today, The Economy Shop continues to thrive, blending tradition with innovation. What began as a bold leap has become a rewarding journey of friendship, entrepreneurship, and hometown pride.

GINNIE ZOBEL

Wireless World, Verizon Authorized Retailer, has been my professional home since 2005. What began as a parttime role while completing my Bachelor of Arts at Dordt University quickly evolved into a fulfilling career rooted in technology and customer relationships.

I discovered my passion for working with business accounts of all sizes, building strong relationships, and serving a growing customer base. In 2011, I began training others to serve business clients, eventually leading a team of business account managers as Director of Business. Together, we successfully expanded from South Dakota to cities within a five-state footprint.

My responsibilities expanded to include organizing events, conducting trainings, supporting various initiatives at Wireless World, as well as being active in the Sioux Falls community, notably chairing the SME Women in Business event in 2018.

In 2020, I took on a broader role with the launch of our Guest Services team and now serve as Director of Sales Support. I lead the rollout of promotions, collaborate with Verizon on new product launches, and ensure our teams are fully equipped with the latest tools for success. I manage sales audits, compensation processes, and system enhancements, working closely with teams to resolve issues and improve efficiency. I strive for the professional growth of my team, encourage proactive problem-solving, and foster a culture of continuous learning and development.

Wireless World strives to do what's right for our guests, and I look forward to continuing to serve our team and communities for many years to come.

SoundMind envisions a world where everyone has access to the tools they need to achieve mental wellness and lead fulfilling lives. The founders believe that happiness is not just a distant goal, but an achievable state of being. With Neurofeedback and targeted psychotherapy, they aim to help clients overcome challenges such as anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, depression, chronic pain, improved focus and peak performance training, impulse control issues, better sleep, and stress reduction – often seeing significant improvements in as little as three months.

The clinic’s vision extends beyond individual healing. By demonstrating the efficacy of Neurofeedback, SoundMind aims to inspire a shift in how mental health is approached, emphasizing proactive, engaged treatment that empowers individuals to take control of their own well-being.

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive, drugfree training method that helps the brain regulate itself more effectively. An individual protocol for each patient is established after completing an intake assessment. The therapists then complete a BrainPrint to fine-tune the Neurofeedback protocol, making it specific to the individual. Sensors are attached to the scalp to monitor brainwave activity. Then the brain waves are analyzed through a computer program designed by BrainPrint. By providing real-time feedback through visual and auditory cues, Neurofeedback helps the brain recognize and adjust its own patterns, leading to improved emotional regulation, focus, and overall mental well-being.

Neurofeedback sessions are bi-weekly and last 45-60 minutes. Clients attend anywhere from 20 to 40 sessions for optimal brain functioning, with individuals seeing progress within the first five to eight sessions.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. – 1 Peter 1: 3-5
