Summer Camps Summer Camps
FOR ALL!
Sioux Falls has a summer camp for every interest
By Natalie Slieter
The new year is here! A year full of possibilities and trying new things. We may still be in the middle of winter, but for parents, it’s time to think ahead and plan what your kids and teens will be doing once school is out. It’s time to sign up for summer camp!
In Sioux Falls, there is a wide variety of summer camps. Camps that focus on the arts, sports, and academics, as well as specialty camps that cover individual interests.
For those interested in the arts, several camps center on dance, music, crafting, theatre, and even a unique opportunity to experience the aerial arts. For sports-loving kids, Sioux Falls Universities and several High Schools offer a wide range of sports camps. For academics, there are several STEM camps and other science or health-based camps.
Participating in summer camps has multiple benefits! First, it gets kids and teens out of the house and off their electronic devices. It can be tempting to stay inside all summer, which can quickly lead to boredom. Summer camps offer the chance to add variety to the day and reassurance that your child is interacting constructively with peers.
HuntSAFE, which stands for “Hunter Safety,” is run by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP). It’s designed to teach students how to handle firearms safely, understand hunting laws and ethics, and develop awareness and respect for wildlife.
SCAN TO FIND A CLASS NEAR YOU
Whether the camp focuses on stimulating minds, creativity, or bodily exercise, attending summer camp will teach new skills. It will also provide a chance to try something new or focus on an interest your child already loves. For some, it may even allow them to step outside their comfort zone. Summer camps are a great opportunity to explore new areas of interest.
Summer camps also provide the setting to connect with peers who have similar interests and form new friendships. But most importantly, summer camp means your child will be having fun!
Registration for many summer camps begins in January or February, making it important for parents to be ready. Before enrolling in a camp, research availability and also ask your child what type of summer camp interests them. Do they want to focus on an interest they already have, or would they like to try a new sport or activity? Also consider your summer schedule - it may work best to find a month that is light on vacations or other activities.
Regardless of your child’s interest, there’s a summer camp available for them! Check out siouxfallssummercamps.org to view a comprehensive list of camp options. n

WINTER IS THE COZIEST TIME TO BE TOGETHER
Romantic and playful date ideas for couples embracing the cold
By Chellee Unruh
By January and February, winter has settled in for the long haul. While the days are short and the air is cold, the season offers the perfect excuse to bundle up and make memories with your favorite person. In South Dakota, winter isn’t just about staying indoors—it’s full of opportunities for romance, laughter, and adventure. From local outings to weekend getaways, these ideas turn chilly days into warm moments.
START LOCAL: WINTER FUN AROUND SIOUX FALLS
Ice skating is a classic winter date for a reason. Glide hand-inhand at the Scheels IcePlex or skate the Ribbon at Jacobson Plaza near Falls Park, where twinkling lights create a magical backdrop. Warm up afterward in the warming house or with warm cocoa. New to skating? Taking a lesson together adds laughter, teamwork, and a little extra charm.
For a quieter outing, try snowshoeing at the Outdoor Campus. Beginner-friendly trails make it easy to explore snowy landscapes without getting stuck in deep powder. Bring a thermos of hot cocoa and enjoy the peaceful
stillness of winter woods. If hiking is more your style, Good Earth State Park offers serene winter trails ideal for a slowerpaced walk and uninterrupted conversation.
Looking for something playful? Head to Tuthill Park for sledding. Race down the hills, make snow angels, then warm up at a cozy downtown café. For a more active date, cross-country skiing is a great option. Trails at Sertoma Park, Spencer Park, and Great Bear Recreation Park offer scenic routes for couples who enjoy a light workout and quiet time together.
ICE FISHING: A CLASSIC SOUTH DAKOTA WINTER DATE
For couples who enjoy a laid-back adventure, ice fishing is a uniquely South Dakota way to spend a winter day. From lakes near Sioux Falls to popular spots like Lake Madison, Lake Thompson, and Waubay Lake, ice fishing offers a peaceful escape from everyday routines. Set up in a heated shelter, drop a line, and enjoy easy conversation, shared snacks, and maybe even a fresh catch. Even if the fish aren’t biting, the time spent together makes it worthwhile.
HEAD WEST: A BLACK HILLS
WINTER ESCAPE
For a bigger adventure, plan a weekend getaway to the Black Hills. Terry Peak Ski Area, near Spearfish is perfect for skiing, snowboarding, or tubing. Rent a cozy cabin, spend your days on the slopes, and your evenings by the fire with wine and conversation. The snow-covered pines and quiet nights make it a true winter retreat.
Snowmobiling adds high-energy excitement. The Black Hills National Forest features hundreds of miles of groomed trails, while southeastern South Dakota offers wide-open prairie routes closer to home.
If a full weekend isn’t possible, Great Bear Ski Valley in Sioux Falls offers downhill runs, tubing, and a terrain park close to home—ideal for mixing convenience with adventure.
No matter what you choose, winter activities are about more than braving the cold—they’re about getting closer. So grab your mittens, bundle up, and make this season memorable with the warmth you create together. n

FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE FOR WOMEN:
When Your Finances “Level Up,” Your Plan Should Too
You work hard, you save, you invest - at some point, you look at your accounts and think, “We’re good.” But, as the financial stakes grow, it’s not uncommon to feel a little unsure. “Am I saving enough?” often becomes, “Am I doing all I can?”
And that’s the part high-achieving women might not expect, according to Jill Mollner, Wealth Advisor at Cornerstone Financial Solutions. While more moving parts can mean more opportunities, they can also mean more instances of “I’ll deal with that later,” and a higher risk of small oversights becoming expensive mistakes. Think multiple old 401(k)s, a new HSA, an inherited account, a side business, or aging-parent responsibilities layered onto everything else.
How do you know if your plan has kept up with your progress?
Start with a one-page “Money Map.”
• What you own (and where).
• What it’s for (near-term goals, long-term goals, retirement income, flexibility).
• How it all works together.
• What would you do first if life changed tomorrow?
It’s common for people to be “on track” and still have important details that haven’t kept up—like retirement accounts left at former employers, beneficiaries that haven’t been updated, or a plan that exists in pieces instead of as one clear picture. A
Money Map can help you see what you have, what it’s for, and what to address first.
4 Checkpoints to Keep Your Plan Running Smoothly
1. Truly Get to Know Your 401(k)
Do this today: Log in and write down your contribution rate and investment mix.
• What you’re invested in (and why)
• Your risk level (does it match your expectations and timeline?)
2. Stress-test Your “What if” Coverage
Do this today: List your fixed monthly expenses, circle the ones that don’t pause.
Ask: If my income is paused for a while, what bills still need to be paid?
3. Estate planning isn’t “only for the wealthy.”
Do this today: Check the beneficiaries on your retirement account and life insurance.
4. Fund the Goal
Do this today: Name the goal you keep putting off, choose a date, and estimate a monthly amount.
A good financial strategy does more than prepare for emergencies; it also creates space for what you want. The trip.
“When your finances grow, the goal is a coordinated plan that gets all the pieces pulling in the same direction.”
The sabbatical. The business idea. That big, hairy, audacious goal you’re not even sure is realistic. So, make that appointment, talk to your financial advisor, and make a plan.

RUSSIAN LIP FILLING TECHNIQUE
By Jayci Holsing
New year, new you, right? Each new year introduces new beauty trends to follow. It’s almost difficult to keep up with what’s “in” or “out” for the year. However, some trends have taken off and only continue to grow in popularity. Lip filler has been on the rise since 2015, when celebrities began admitting their secrets to beautifully full and naturally looking lips. If you are tempted to transform your lips, 2026 may be the year to commit to perfecting your pout. There are so many types of lip-filling techniques to discover, so how do you know which one is right for you? If you hesitate to try filler because you don’t want to look puffy or compromise your natural lip shape, the Russian Lip filling technique may be right for you. Russian Lip creates fullness, gives you a little lift and shape, and you’ll absolutely love the new definition of your lips.
Just like other lip-filling techniques, the Russian technique lasts 9-12 months, depending on your metabolism and the type of hyaluronic acid used for the injection. Russian Lips application utilizes vertical micro-injections to focus on enhancing the natural shape of your lips while still creating a beautiful doll-like pout. This technique really helps shape your cupid’s bow and gives your lips overall definition. The main goal of this filling technique is to produce fullness in the lips as opposed to plumpness, meaning you will see the beautiful high peaks of your cupid’s bow and have a fuller lower lip without having to worry about puffiness. Shape your cupid’s bow in time for Valentine’s Day and romanticize your own natural beauty with this enhancement.
Whether you want to transform your lip look or want a little extra definition, lip filler is a great option to help enhance your natural features. To reap the benefits of definition, shape, and fullness without the concern of looking puffy, the Russian Lip technique is an opportunity to attain your perfect pout. If you’ve been hesitating to jump on this trend, now is the time to try it out! The start of the new year is perfect for new looks, new lips, and new confidence in your naturally enhanced beauty. n
HOW TO LOOK SLIMMER BY
Tonight
By Charlotte Hofer
Need to slim down by sunset? If the party is tonight and you don’t have time to diet, here are a few simple tricks – to help you look fit, firm and fabulous…by 5!
MONOCHROME MAGIC. Want a long, lean line? Try wearing just one color –think navy tee with dark denim, or a white blouse paired with winter white pants and silver sneakers. Mixing shades in the same family - like olive cargos with a moss green top – works too. Pantsuits can be your best friend here, creating a seamless vertical line. And don’t forget basic black – the super-power when it comes to making you look skinny. Don’t like black? Try rich violet or dark green. The goal: uninterrupted color from top to toe.
V-NECK IS FOR VICTORY. Grab a V-neck. It draws the eye downward, elongating your neck and torso while balancing wider hips.
No V’s in your closet? A boatneck can broaden your shoulders and give you the same slimming illusion.
GET SOME SHAPE WEAR. Say goodbye to muffin top or back fat. Create a trim, taut line with a body smoother you wear under your clothes. Shape wear can instantly create a sleeker profile and eliminate unwanted lumps under your party dress.
FABULOUS FABRICS. Choose fabrics that flatter. Cotton blends hold their shape and smooth out curves. Spandex can do miracles. Avoid shiny, clingy fabrics or thin, stretchy materials that accentuate every extra pound.
ADD SOME HEIGHT. Wedges, platform sneakers, boots, high heels – any shoe with elevation can help your legs look longer (and sexier!)
GET A TAN. Self-tanners give you a quick glow in a few hours, adding warmth and definition to your arms and legs. If you’re going to wear a sleeveless top or short skirt, get the faux tan. And to really make your legs look long and elegant, add some nude high heels. Now you’re runway-ready!
SPARKLE WITH JEWELRY. Distract with beautiful jewelry. Your wrists and ankles are naturally slim, so give them the spotlight! Swap long sleeves and fulllength pants for cropped styles and short sleeves. Add sparkle with bracelets and ankle chains. By drawing the eye to your wrists and ankles, you create new focal points.
GOOD POSTURE. Stand up straight, shoulders back, tummy in. Slouching adds inches by poofing your stomach out. And be sure to stretch before you leave the house – it elongates your core and gives you that graceful, leaner silhouette. Good posture instantly slims you.
Bottom line – remember, real beauty radiates from within. You’re already dazzling – these tricks will just help you shine a little brighter. n
MARY J. JORDAN, APRN, is the owner and provider at Encompass Wellness & Aesthetics — but before she became a clinician specializing in hormone optimization, she was a patient searching for answers about her own health. Her journey began at age 36, when she entered perimenopause. Like many women, she started losing hormones — specifically testosterone — and experienced symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety, brain fog, irregular cycles, weight gain, and low libido. She did not yet have classic symptoms of menopause, but she also had little understanding of what perimenopause truly meant.
Mary sought support through traditional medicine. Her primary care provider recommended antidepressants, and her OB-GYN attributed her irregular cycles to perimenopause after a normal Pap test but offered no treatment. When she began experiencing heart palpitations, she was evaluated by cardiology and told her PVCs and PACs were benign. Although every test came back “normal,” she still didn’t feel like herself — and no one was connecting her symptoms to hormone decline.
It wasn’t until she became a nurse practitioner and completed certification in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy that Mary fully understood the profound role hormone balance plays in quality of life. A comprehensive lab panel finally provided clarity. After starting testosterone therapy, her symptoms improved within days — and her passion for helping women reclaim their energy, confidence, and vitality was born.
If you’re tired of being told “everything looks normal” when you know something isn’t, it’s time to listen to your body. Call Encompass Wellness today to schedule a hormone consultation and start feeling like yourself again!
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?!
The capsule wardrobe that solves EVERYTHING
By Charlotte Hofer
What should I wear? OMG –- how is it possible to have a closet full of clothes and still feel like you have nothing to wear?! If that sounds familiar, don’t despair. All you need is a capsule wardrobe.
WHAT IS A CAPSULE WARDROBE?
It’s your secret weapon: a mini collection of clothing that works together to create endless outfits. It favors timeless classics over fleeting trends, focusing on high-quality pieces that make getting dressed effortless. The best part? You’re left with only the clothes that spark joy, not the ones that haunt you from the hanger.
THE BENEFITS
• Time saver: No more frantic mornings staring at clothes you never wear
• Money saver: Fewer impulse buys, more intentional investments
• Stress reducer: Fewer choices make you feel less overwhelmed
• More closet space: Out go the outdated, ill-fitting, and unworn items. (Like bad boyfriends, they’ve gotta go!)
GETTING STARTED
Begin by assessing your current wardrobe. Remove anything that doesn’t fit, doesn’t flatter, or hasn’t seen daylight in years. Then, consider your lifestyle. Do you work from home? Dress up for the office? Travel a lot? Love working out? Your capsule should reflect your lifestyle.
Focus on quality, fit, and comfort. Choose pieces that make you feel confident. Resist the trends (accordion sleeves, anyone?). Your goal is fewer pieces, but the ones you love, so you can mix and match and always look good – without wasting 20 minutes staring at your closet. And remember, building a capsule wardrobe is a marathon, not a sprint. Update and refine as your needs change.
6 CAPSULE WARDROBE ESSENTIALS
The idea is to build a capsule wardrobe that’s small enough to capture your style, yet large enough to give you creative freedom to express yourself. Here are six foundational pieces to kick things off:
1. White button-down shirt: Smart under a blazer or relaxed with leggings and sneakers.
2. Tailored black pants: Invest in a flattering cut that can go effortlessly from office to dinner.
3. Fitted white T-shirt: The fashion chameleon, wear it with jeans and a leather jacket or upscale it with a skirt and heels. Options include grey, black, or navy.
4. Blue jeans: Straight-leg, mid-rise, in a medium or dark wash. Universally flattering, forever classic.
5. Navy or black blazer: Instantly polishes your look.
6. Little Black Dress (LBD): The ultimate power. Choose a silhouette that makes you feel unstoppable!
THE FINAL WORD
A capsule wardrobe isn’t about limiting yourself – it’s about freeing yourself. With fewer, better pieces in your closet, getting dressed becomes joyful again. Every outfit feels intentional, confident, unmistakably you. Because real luxury isn’t about having more –it’s about having what matters. n

ABOUT SELLING YOUR HOME?
Prepare with clarity, strategy, and readiness
By Margaret Pennock, Realtor®
Considering selling your home can feel both exciting and overwhelming. For many homeowners in the Sioux Falls area, it’s a decision tied not just to real estate, but to lifestyle changes, timing, and what comes next. The good news? With thoughtful preparation and the right guidance, selling your home can be a confident, well-planned experience rather than a stressful one.
The decision to sell is the first step. The next—and arguably most important—is understanding the local market and specifically what it means for your home. While national headlines often grab attention, real estate is always local. In our Sioux Falls market, buyer demand, neighborhood inventory, and pricing trends can vary significantly from one area to the next. That’s why working with a professional who understands these nuances is essential to setting realistic expectations and building a smart strategy.
One important thing to remember: having a conversation with a Realtor® does not mean you are committing to list your home. In fact, early conversations can save you thousands of dollars by helping you avoid unnecessary improvements or under-preparing your property. A Realtor’s® role is to help you make informed decisions aligned with your goals, timeline, and budget. The most successful sales occur when you work as a team by keeping the process intentional and positive.
Late winter is an ideal time to begin preparing. Buyers are starting to look seriously, and sellers who plan often feel more in control when it’s time to launch. This season is perfect for making small, strategic updates that deliver a strong return:
• Interior paint updates or touch-ups
• Lighting upgrades to brighten winter interiors
• Flooring refreshes or professional cleaning
• Kitchen and bath “glow-ups” rather than full remodels—think new hardware, paint, or a simple backsplash
• Decluttering to showcase space (and get a head start on moving)
• Light staging by rearranging or removing furniture
• Organizing closets and cupboards—buyers absolutely look here
By objectively evaluating your home’s condition now, you will help to reduce future stress. Often, Realtors® can connect sellers with trusted local professionalspainters, cleaners, handymen—who understand how to prepare a home for today’s buyers efficiently and cost-effectively.
Curb appeal also matters, even in winter. Without lush summer landscaping, details become more noticeable. A clean entryway, welllit exterior, and a welcoming front door go a long way. Additional touches could include a fresh doormat, tasteful wreath, or realistic greenery to help create a positive first impression—something buyers form within seconds of arriving.
Beyond market value, I’m a strong believer that preparing your home to sell should also enhance your quality of life while you’re still living there. Fresh paint, organized spaces, and a welcoming entry don’t just attract buyers—they make your home more enjoyable for you right now.
Selling your home doesn’t start with a sign in the yard. It starts with clarity, preparation, and a thoughtful plan. And when you’re ready—whether that’s weeks or months from now— you’ll be glad you began the process with confidence. n
Someday Could Be Today.
Why wait for someday to enjoy life to the fullest? Whether it’s finally taking that long-awaited trip, picking up a favorite hobby again, or hosting friends for a leisurely dinner, all the moments you’ve been dreaming of can start now.
At Touchmark, we handle the chores and details—everything from home maintenance to meals and yard care—so you can spend your time on what truly matters: making memories, nurturing passions, and sharing life with the people you love.
INVEST IN SMART DEVICES THAT PROTECT YOUR HOME WHILE YOU’RE AWAY
De-stress travel plans with technology that gives you peace of mind and helps keep your home safe and sound
By Margaret Pennock, Realtor®
Winter in South Dakota makes travel planning a top priority. After all, who doesn’t dream of escaping to sunny beaches when the temperatures plummet? To truly relax while you’re away, it’s worth investing in “smart” and automated devices that provide peace of mind and help safeguard your home. Fortunately, today’s technology offers an impressive range of options to do just that.
HOME SECURITY
Security Systems: Choose from DIY setups or professionally installed systems, depending on your budget and comfort with technology.
Lighting: A dark home for days on end signals vacancy. “Smart” lighting can turn lights on and off at scheduled or random times, making it appear as though someone is home.
Blinds: Automated blinds let in sunshine for your plants
while giving the impression that you are home when you are away.
Video Doorbells: Monitor and record visitors at your front door from anywhere.
Garage Door Openers: Check if your garage door is closed; if not, close it remotely if needed.
Smart Locks: Control locks from your smartphone and even grant temporary access to house sitters without sharing the code.
Smart Glass: With a tap on your phone, turn windows from clear to opaque for privacy.
Smart Plugs: A budget-friendly way to control lamps or appliances remotely.
Door and Window Sensors: Simple, affordable devices that alert you if an entry point has been opened unauthorized.
HOME EMERGENCIES
Leak Detectors: Receive instant alerts if water leaks are detected. Keep your plumber’s contact information handy in case you need immediate repairs.
Smart Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Detectors: These devices can send alerts directly to your phone and even contact emergency services— every minute counts in an emergency.
COMFORT & CONVENIENCE
Smart Thermostats: Monitor and adjust your home’s temperature from anywhere. Have your trusted HVAC professional’s number handy just in case.
Smart Appliances: From refrigerators to ovens, many appliances now include cameras, remote on/off functions, and even notifications if someone uses them unexpectedly.
PET CARE
Traveling doesn’t have to mean stress for your furry family members. While not all devices are “smart,” automation makes pet care easier:
Pet Cameras/Treat Dispensers: Visually check in on your pets, toss treats, and even chat with them.
Automatic Litter Boxes: Keep litter receptacles clean for your cats while you’re gone.
Automatic Feeders/Waterers: Ensure fresh food and water are always available.
Smart Pet Doors: Great for fenced yards, these doors can be controlled via smartphone—perfect for letting pets out during the day, even from your office.
Robot Vacuums: Keep pet hair under control so you return to a cleaner home. Many models can empty their bins and run daily without interruption.
PEACE OF MIND WHILE YOU’RE AWAY
Taking the time to prepare your home with “smart” and automated devices is one of the best ways to protect your investment and your peace of mind. Whether you’re gone for a week or just a long weekend, these tools can reduce stress, keep your home secure, and ensure your pets are well cared for.
HAPPY TRAVELS!

A GLORIOUS
Gem
This historic home in Sioux Falls has aged gracefully—and beautifully— through the years
By Margaret Pennock, Realtor®

Some homes are simply places to live. Others are storytellers—quietly holding the memories, milestones, and lives that have unfolded within their walls. Nestled in one of Sioux Falls’ most treasured historic neighborhoods, a remarkable Mediterranean-style residence built in 1912 is very much the latter. More than a century after it was first imagined, this architectural gem continues to captivate, inspire, and welcome all who step inside.
From the moment it was constructed, the home stood apart. Its design—reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright’s signature Prairie-style influences— celebrates craftsmanship, proportion, and intention. Horizontal lines ground the structure in strength and balance; while soaring stained-glass windows flood the interior with light and color. Coffered ceilings draw the eye upward; a centrally located woodburning fireplace anchors the home, and original built-in furniture speaks to an era when homes were thoughtfully designed to last for generations.
Today, the home is lovingly cared for by Elizabeth and Jolin Carlson, along with their children, Ava and Kye, and their two dogs, Millie and Tito. For the Carlsons, this house became a home three years ago—but the connection was immediate.
“From the first moment we walked in, we could picture our friends and family gathered here,” Elizabeth recalls. “We could see birthday parties, holidays, long dinners, and celebrations unfolding naturally in these spaces. We also loved how close it was to downtown and to McKennan Park. It felt like the perfect blend of neighborhood charm and city life.”
That blend of past and present, elegance and comfort—is what makes this home so special. While the architecture is undeniably historic, it functions beautifully for modern living, thanks in large part to the thoughtful restoration work completed by previous owners. At one point in its long history, the home had been converted into a multifamily residence. Thankfully, it was later restored to its original singlefamily purpose, with careful attention paid to honoring its heritage while discreetly integrating contemporary conveniences.
“They truly respected the home,” Elizabeth says. “They brought in modern touches that we very much appreciate and take full advantage of, without taking away from its character. With a house like this, you really can have the best of both worlds. We haven’t sacrificed comfort or functionality, even though the home is over a century old.”
That harmony between old and new extends to the home’s interior design. Elizabeth has always been drawn to antiques and historic spaces, while Jolin leans toward a more modern aesthetic. Bridging those styles was no small task, but Elizabeth credits her longtime friend Megan Peterson, owner of The Design House, with helping them strike the perfect balance.
“She understood the home immediately,” Elizabeth explains. “The goal was to honor the architecture while also reflecting who we are as a family. Nothing feels forced—it all feels intentional.”
THIS HOME WAS BUILT TO ENTERTAIN, AND WE LOVE TO HOST ANY CHANCE WE GET.
– ELIZABETH CARLSON
Over the decades, the home has evolved, adapting to the needs of each generation while retaining its soul. One of the most notable transformations involved an outdoor porch that was eventually enclosed to create what is now the kitchen and dining area—a space that has become the heart of the home.
But perhaps the most magical detail in the house remained hidden for years.
When the previous owners removed a false drywall ceiling—installed decades earlier—they uncovered a breathtaking lattice ceiling that had been concealed for over 40 years. The intricate, curved design is a testament to early 20th-century craftsmanship, with each piece of lattice carefully steamed or soaked in water before being shaped and positioned beneath a plaster ceiling. Historians believe the space was once a covered patio, making the discovery even more remarkable.
“The kitchen is one of our favorite spaces,” Elizabeth says with a smile. “Not because I’m some incredible cook—but because of the story behind that ceiling. The craftsmanship is unbelievable. It’s not just beautiful; it’s meaningful.”
The discovery was so significant that it was featured in This Old House Magazine, further cementing the home’s place as an architectural treasure.
With nearly 6,000 square feet of living space, the home offers both grandeur and flexibility. It includes a spacious kitchen, two family living areas, a home office, six bedrooms, and six bathrooms. Thoughtfully incorporated amenities—a golf simulator, sauna, workout room, and multiple outdoor entertaining areas—allow the Carlsons to enjoy the home fully, whether hosting a crowd or savoring a quiet evening together sitting by the cozy fireplace or grilling on the patio. A four-car garage completes the property, adding practicality to its long list of features.
For the Carlsons, however, square footage and amenities tell only part of the story.
“This home was built to entertain,” Elizabeth says. “And we love to host any chance we get. It allows us to entertain on every level—inside and out.”
Their children feel the same. Ava and Kyle regularly fill the home with friends, laughter, and music. While the kids gather downstairs to watch movies, play pool, or belt out karaoke favorites, Elizabeth and Jolin might be upstairs entertaining friends or unwinding in the golf simulator.
The tradition of hospitality runs deep in the home’s history. Extensive research conducted by a previous owner uncovered old newspaper articles detailing lavish parties once held there—some with as many as 300 guests and live music performed in what was described as a lowerlevel ballroom.
“There’s something special about knowing that joy and celebration have always lived here,” Elizabeth reflects. “It feels like we’re continuing a tradition.”
That sense of stewardship weighs thoughtfully on the Carlsons, particularly given the home’s historic designations. Located within the Sherman Historic District and officially recognized as the John Morrell Foster House on the National Register of Historic Places, the property comes with both prestige and responsibility.
When the Carlsons decided to add a golf simulator, they did so with great care. A hidden room was created off the main floor family room, complete with a seamless concealed door that preserves the visual integrity of the space. No original details were disturbed, and the installation was designed to be fully reversible—ensuring the home could one day return entirely to its original form.
“We see ourselves as caretakers. “It’s incredibly important to us that we take care of this house and leave it in excellent condition for the next family. This isn’t just our home—it’s a piece of Sioux Falls history,” Elizabeth explains.
That perspective shapes how they live in the space. The home is respected, but never treated like a museum. It is filled with life—dogs padding across original floors, kids racing up and down staircases, friends lingering late into the evening over conversation and wine. It holds moments both joyful and challenging, just as it has for more than a century.
And that, perhaps, is what makes it truly extraordinary.
“Its uniqueness and its space for entertaining— inside and out—are hard to match,” Elizabeth says. “You won’t find another home like this in Sioux Falls. But as wonderful as it is, what makes it most special isn’t the walls or even the location. It’s the feeling it gives you.”
She pauses, choosing her words carefully.
“For most people, it’s a feeling of belonging and comfort. This home holds memories—laughter, hard conversations, milestones, and quiet moments. What makes it most special to us are the people in it.”
As the home enters its second century, it does so gracefully—still standing strong, still gathering stories, and still offering warmth to those who pass through its doors. In every sense of the word, it remains a glorious gem. n

ANSWERING COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT ENT HEALTH
Getting expert answers to common ear, nose, and throat concerns
By Margaret Pennock
From old wives’ tales to half-true advice found online, misinformation can quietly stand between people and better health. These misconceptions often delay treatment, exacerbate symptoms, or lead individuals to believe they must ultimately “live with it.”
At Midwest ENT & Allergy, expert providers are committed to providing education, empowering patients to seek care, find relief, and improve their quality of life.
Q: ARE ANTIBIOTICS THE ONLY TREATMENT FOR CHRONIC SINUS PRESSURE?
A: No—chronic sinus issues often have multiple effective treatment options.
Many sinus conditions can be managed with targeted medications, regular sinus rinses, and steroid nasal sprays. Identifying the underlying cause is key to creating an effective treatment plan.
When conservative approaches aren’t enough, minimally invasive in-office procedures can offer long-
term relief. In more complex cases, surgical options may be recommended to correct anatomical issues.
“These treatments can be life-changing for patients who have suffered from chronic sinusitis,” says Dr. Micah M. Likness. “They allow patients to breathe through their nose again, relieve facial pressure and pain, restore their sense of smell, and significantly reduce overall symptoms.”
Q: DO I ULTIMATELY HAVE TO DEAL WITH MY ALLERGIES?
A: No—allergies are both treatable and manageable with the right approach.
For many people, over-the-counter medications provide only minimal relief. Personalized treatment plans can dramatically improve symptoms by identifying triggers and addressing chronic congestion or rhinitis. Treatment may include lifestyle adjustments, such as allergen avoidance and dust covers, along with targeted medical therapies.
“Allergies can be treated in three ways: avoidance, medication, and immunotherapy,” explains Dr. Peter Kasznica. “If antihistamines and nasal sprays aren’t enough, immunotherapy—such as allergy shots or sublingual drops—can help retrain the immune system and provide long-term relief.”
Q: CAN CHILDREN OUTGROW EAR PROBLEMS?
A: Yes—but some children may need intervention to prevent long-term complications.
Many children do outgrow ear issues and may only need antibiotics for occasional infections. However, recurrent ear infections should be carefully monitored, as they increase the risk of hearing loss or damage to the eardrum.
“Typically, the Eustachian tubes allow air into the middle ear and help fluid drain out,” explains Dr. Thomas Tamura. “When those tubes don’t function properly, fluid can build up, leading to infections and hearing loss. By placing a small ventilation tube in the eardrum, we can restore airflow and drainage—often preventing ongoing problems.”
Q:
IS HEARING LOSS JUST A NORMAL PART OF GETTING OLDER?
A: While common, untreated hearing loss can affect far more than hearing alone.
Age-related hearing loss is widespread, but ignoring it can have serious social and cognitive consequences.
“When you can’t hear well, you tend to withdraw and avoid social interactions,” says Dr. Greg Danielson. “What many people don’t realize is that treating hearing loss can significantly reduce the risk of dementia and cognitive decline.”
With today’s advancements—including hearing aids, implants, and other prosthetic solutions— patients have more options than ever to stay connected and engaged.
THE BOTTOM LINE

FEBRUARY’S QUIET KIND OF LOVE: THE HUMAN–ANIMAL BOND
By Dr. Amanda Zanger
While a typical Valentine’s Day holiday revolves around flowers, candies, and love notes for your human companion, there might be something you have forgotten about. I’m referring to the love and reassurance that our pets give us, known as the humananimal bond. During gloomy or isolating mid-west winters, the human–animal bond becomes especially visible: steady, uncomplicated, and deeply sustaining.
Our pets give us something that most people cannot: unconditional love and consistent connection. They respond to tone, touch, and attention, reinforcing a sense of being needed and seen. It has been documented that these interactions have helped reduce stress, improve mood, and increase emotional resilience.
As the winter lingers, humans and animals will naturally draw closer. These extra moments spent indoors help create opportunities for companionship. This can look like: an animal curled at your feet, a shared pause during a brisk walk, or the calm presence of a trusted animal in an otherwise quiet home. These interactions are simple, but they reflect a relationship built on consistency, care, and mutual trust.
In a season dedicated to love, the human–animal bond serves as a reminder that affection does not require ceremony. This also presents an opportunity to extend that bond to animals still waiting for a home. Shelters often experience an influx
of animals during the winter months, many of them in dire need of warmth, security, and companionship. Choosing to adopt a shelter pet in February is a meaningful way to turn compassion into action, offering an animal a second chance while gaining a loyal companion in return. In doing so, the human–animal bond begins not with grand gestures, but with a simple decision to give love where it is most needed.

JY6 FOUNDATION NURSE OF THE YEAR: LESLEY BOHNET
By Virginia Olson | Photo by Kelly Middlebrooks
The JY6 Foundation will honor a Nurse of the Year at the 15th Annual Nurses Dinner on Saturday, March 28, at the Downtown Hilton Garden Inn. The event hosted by JY6 celebrates area oncology nurses and all they do while raising funds and awareness for pediatric cancer and leukemia research. This year, Sanford nurse Lesley Bohnet will be honored.
A veteran nurse with 25 years’ experience, Lesley specializes in pediatric oncology at Sanford Children’s Hospital. She is chemotherapy and biotherapy certified, balancing direct patient care with a leadership role in clinical training. Lesley oversees the orientation of oncology nurses, ensuring the team is proficient in critical procedures such as central line dressing changes and port-a-cath access – to maintain the highest standards of patient safety.
Lesley says she is often asked how she ended up in pediatric oncology.
“My childhood was defined by frequent infections and
surgeries, but the kindness of the nurses who cared for me sparked my lifelong ambition. Even as a child, I spent time ‘treating’ my dolls, mimicking the compassion I received. Those early experiences shaped my desire to pursue nursing, turning my history as a patient into a passion for healing others.
After graduating from USD in 2000, I began a career at Sanford in Sioux Falls. While I started in rehab, a moment during pediatric orientation changed me forever. My preceptor threw snowballs at a window of a grieving young patient, transforming her tears into giggles. That instant revealed my true calling: I don’t just provide medical care; I strive to be the light in a child’s darkest days.
Outside of her nursing career, Lesley is a wife and mother. She has been married to Brian Bohnet for nearly 30 years. They have three children – Briley, Brody, and Ashley.
The JYK foundation is honored to recognize Lesley Bohnet of Sanford Children’s Hospital with the 2025 JY6 Nurse of the
Year award, said Dane Yde, Foundation CEO. “Lesley has spent her 25-year career caring for childhood cancer patients with compassion, kindness, and humility. She has the unique ability to connect with patients and their families, providing the comfort they need during uniquely difficult times. Lesley has also served as an incredible role model to her fellow team members through her orientation and training of new nurses and her mentorship and leadership for her colleagues. She is exactly the type of nurse this award was designed to honor and recognize.”
Knowing what the award represents, Lesley couldn’t be more grateful. “Some people spend their whole lives looking for their ‘why.’ I am fortunate; I found mine in the smiles of courageous children.”
The Jorgen Yde (JY6) Foundation was formed by the Yde family in 2011 after their 16-year-old son Jorgen died from acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The family created the foundation to honor Jorgen’s final wish to pay forward the kindness and expert care he received from the selfless nurses who were by his side as he battled cancer.
This year’s Nurses Dinner is meant to celebrate nurses and is open to the public. For any questions call 605.274.3388 or email: events@jy6foundation.org. n

Lisa Vogel shares her life—and her love—with children in need
By Margaret Pennock
Raising a family of five was a fulfilling and beautiful journey for Lisa Vogel. Being a present, hands-on mother was not just something she did—it was who she was. For years, caring for her children was her greatest joy and her clearest purpose in life. But when her youngest prepared to graduate and Lisa found herself entering the season of empty nesting, she felt untethered. With her children grown and gone, she wondered what might come next.
“I’ve always had a heart for children and truly loved staying home to care for them,” Lisa shares. “When my youngest was getting ready to graduate, I thought, Where do I go from here? I like taking care of people, but I didn’t know what to do—or even who I was anymore.”
Then, at what she now recognizes as a serendipitous moment, Lisa attended a church event where she met a woman fostering a baby. “When she asked me to hold her, I took that baby into my arms and instantly felt connected,” Lisa recalls. “In that moment, I knew— this is what I’m going to do.”
Shortly after that encounter, Lisa contacted the South Dakota Department of Social Services to learn the process of becoming a foster parent. The process required classes, training, and nearly a year of preparation. “And then,” she says with a smile, “I had my first child placed with me within two weeks.”
Over the next decade, Lisa welcomed an astonishing 75 children into her home and her heart. While deeply rewarding, fostering also comes with emotional complexities.
Photos by Kelly Middlebrooks
“Once children are placed, the system immediately looks for biological family members who might be able to take them,” Lisa explains. “Sometimes I’d have a child for just a week before a grandmother or aunt was found.”
Other times, the journey was far longer—and far more difficult. “I’ve had children come from very dysfunctional situations,” she says. “They’d be with us for several months, long enough to be thriving and doing so well, and then suddenly the Department of Social Services would determine that the parents had earned the right to have their child back. That’s a heartbreaking experience for both the child and us.”
Yet through every high and low, Lisa has never lost her deep love for children—or her ability to connect with them. Along the way, Lisa has built lasting bonds with fellow foster parents, including Cindy Olson, now a lifelong friend. “She has a heart like mine,” Lisa says. Cindy eventually adopted four children, all

Lisa has also formed meaningful relationships with many biological families. “Sometimes families can’t take children full-time but still want to be involved,” she explains. “I’ve stayed in communication, and in some cases, a grandmother has eventually been able to take the child. Knowing it’s good for them—that’s a really good feeling.”
Equally cherished are the relationships Lisa maintains with the children she’s fostered over the years. “I love them all and the memories we’ve made,” she says. “When they left, we would cry. Many times they didn’t want to leave—and I didn’t want them to go either.”
Over time, Lisa adopted three daughters: Brooklynn, Zoe, and Jazmine. While the road hasn’t always been easy, her faith has been a steady source of strength. “I’ve found a church filled with faithful, loving people I call family,” she shares. “Since both of my parents have passed away, one dear friend—who’s a little older than me—has stepped in as a grandmother to my girls. That’s incredibly special to all of us.”
Creating a healthy, loving family dynamic is central to Lisa’s life. She’s committed to family dinners, board game nights, and movie nights—moments of togetherness she treasures. Still, she understands the importance of taking care of herself. “Even in the most challenging times, I find ways to reset,” she says. “Sometimes that means sitting in a quiet room, watching a little comedy, reading a book, or listening to Christian music. I just sit, breathe—and then I’m ready to do it again. I’ve got this.”
She laughs as she adds, “I love meeting up with friends and family, shopping, going for walks, and taking my girls to the park. My husband Doug and I make time for a date once a week, either for dinner or coffee. And yes—I love massages and getting my nails done. Those are my little luxuries.”
At the end of the day, Lisa knows her life holds deep meaning. Being able to help children—and truly make a difference—has become her greatest blessing. “Fostering comes with challenges,” she says thoughtfully. “Some are easy, some are hard, and many are emotional. But if you’re able to help even one person, it’s worth it. You learn as you go, and there are so many wonderful resources available to support foster families.” n
LEADING THE WAY:
WOMEN IN SOUTH DAKOTA
By Virginia Olson
From the innovative hub of Sioux Falls to the rolling landscape of the Black Hills, women are the driving force behind South Dakota’s expanding economy. This isn’t just about business ownership; it’s about the profound impact of women in business – the executives, strategists, creators, mentors, and licensed professionals who bring a unique blend of prairie resilience and modern vision to every boardroom and storefront in our city and state.
In South Dakota, being a woman in business means navigating a unique intersection of tradition and progress. Whether they lead established corporations, pioneer new technologies, or manage vital community services, these professionals are defined by a distinct brand of Midwestern grit. They are problem-solvers who turn challenges into catalysts for growth, ensuring that our state remains competitive while staying rooted in local values.
Beyond their daily roles, these women are dedicated to building a sustainable ecosystem for those who follow. Through collaborative networking, mentorships, and a commitment to excellence, women in businesses are reshaping the workplace to be more inclusive, dynamic, and forward-thinking. They are the heartbeat of our economy – proving every day that leadership isn’t just a title, but a commitment to elevating our communities and driving the state toward a prosperous future. n

April 2: A Baker's Dozen: Easy Ways to Begin Your Family History
Independence, resilience, and forward momentum have long defined the American identity. While looking ahead is essential, understanding where you come from can be just as powerful. Knowing your past doesn’t hold you back—it gives you perspective and a sense of purpose.
With today’s technology and expansive online databases, genealogy—the study of family history—has become one of America’s fastest-growing hobbies. Names and dates are now relatively easy to find, but uncovering the meaning behind them—the choices, challenges, and stories that shaped generations—requires guidance and context.
That’s where the Sioux Valley Genealogical Society (SVGS) comes in. By pairing modern research tools with expert instruction, SVGS helps individuals move beyond surface-level discoveries to uncover deeper family narratives that illuminate who they are today.
“Past family history can certainly influence your life now,” says Luann Schultz, Vice President of SVGS. “We teach people how to take what they find online and dig deeper—to understand how they got here, why they’re here, and where they came from.”
In celebration of the United States’ 250th anniversary, SVGS is offering a four-part workshop series to help participants research, preserve, and share their family histories. The series begins April 2 at 7 pm with a livestream presentation by Certified Genealogist Paula Stuart-Warren, who will guide attendees in writing their own family stories. Additional sessions will focus on effective research strategies and may uncover personal connections to the American Revolution.
Registration for all four sessions is $30 for non-members (includes a one-year SVGS membership); $10 for SVGS members.
Location: Old Courthouse Museum, 200 W 6th St; Sioux Falls, SD. Call 605.991.0256 or visit svgssd.org to register.
