INTRODUCTION

Majulah Singapura Grant Rowles Co-founder, Geneva Dry Welcome to Splash Singapore.

When Sam Chambers and I first started discussing this conference, the ambition was simple: to create the kind of shipping event we would actually want to attend ourselves. The maritime calendar is not short of conferences. Singapore in particular hosts some of the biggest and best-known gatherings in the industry. So there was little point in creating another event unless we could make it different. For me, a good shipping conference comes down to three things: the right people in the room, conversations that go somewhere, and enough space in the programme to actually meet one another. Too many conferences have become endurance tests. Long presentations, overcrowded agendas, panels where everyone agrees with everyone else and delegates spending most of the day checking their phones while waiting for the coffee break. Splash Singapore is designed differently. We have deliberately avoided presentations. Instead, the programme is built around conversations between people who are directly involved in the decisions shaping shipping: shipowners, charterers, traders, financiers, technology companies and other senior figures from across the maritime world. We want our moderators to ask the questions people in the audience would ask themselves. We want you in the audience to pluck up the courage to grab a mic and ask questions. We want panellists to disagree. We want opinions rather than corporate talking points. And, above all, we want people to leave the room having learned something they did not know when they arrived. The same philosophy applies outside the conference hall. Shipping remains a relationship business. Some of the most valuable conversations at any event happen over coffee, lunch or a drink rather than on stage. We have therefore tried to create a format that gives delegates plenty of time to meet, reconnect and do business. Being in Singapore matters too. This city sits at the centre of global shipping in a way few others can match. Owners, managers, commodity houses, banks, insurers, brokers, technology companies and regulators all operate within a remarkably concentrated maritime ecosystem. It is the natural home for the sort of broad, commercially minded shipping conversation we want Splash Singapore to become known for and we are incredibly grateful for the backing of the Singapore Maritime Forum. Our goal is not to build the biggest maritime conference in Singapore. It is to build one of the most useful and enjoyable. If you go home with a better understanding of where the markets are heading, one idea that changes how you think about your business, and several new relationships worth developing, then we will have achieved what we set out to do. We always want to improve - so do get in touch with me or my colleagues with any suggestions on how we take this event to the next level next September.

We want you in the audience to pluck up the courage to grab a mic and ask questions

Digital Maturity Evaluate today, what comes tomorrow

WELCOME SMF

Singapore: A Trusted and Resilient Hub where Global Maritime Converges Ms. Tan Beng Tee Executive Director, Singapore Maritime Foundation The world today is navigating a period of intense volatility and complexity. Geopolitics, regulatory shifts, energy security, climate change, and emerging technologies are now intertwined with commercial decisions. Even so, the core mission of shipping – transporting raw materials, energy, food, and manufactured goods across the world at scale – remains as vital as ever. To continue delivering this essential service, global maritime hubs will need to strengthen resilience by investing in talent, and foster collaborations amid a more uncertain external environment. A Competitive Workforce and Maritime-ready Talent Pipeline As maritime embraces new technologies and progresses toward a shared net-zero ambition, the workforce will need to be upskilled in tandem to remain resilient and competitive. In this regard, Maritime Singapore is investing in its workforce so that it can in turn support the transformation of companies that choose Singapore as a base for business. We work in partnership with companies to achieve this objective. In 2024, the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF)—an industry-led organization that fosters public-andprivate sector collaboration—signed an agreement with the National University of Singapore, ranked 10th in the world, to provide continuing education and training (CET) for maritime professionals in emerging areas critical to business transformation. By the end of this year, some 200 maritime professionals would have completed foundation and intermediate courses in data analytics, with programs in AI and sustainability to be launched in due course. Complementing the uplifting of the current workforce are efforts to nurture a sustainable talent pipeline upstream. Here, SMF partners the maritime community to raise the profile of maritime as a dynamic, purposeful, and global industry. Since 2007, the MaritimeONE Scholarship spearheaded by SMF with support from the industry has awarded more than 700 scholarships with an aggregate value of over S$20 million to youths with aspirations to join the industry. Complementing the scholarship is a series of programs to support the transition of students from campus to the workforce. These include the MaritimeONE Career Portal, the MaritimeONE Internship Program, the MaritimeONE Campus and Company Connect series, and more. A Cohesive and Connected Maritime Ecosystem Maritime Singapore’s holistic ecosystem has been consistently recognized by independent reports. The XinhuaBaltic International Shipping Centre Development Index (ISCDI) has ranked Singapore 1st for 13 consecutive years. We have also maintained our lead in the DNV-Menon Leading Maritime Cities report for six years running. Last year, Singapore also secured top placing in the inaugural DNV Leading Container Ports of the World report. Today, Singapore is home to some 200 international shipping groups. Supporting this cluster of shipowners and operators is a close-knit, comprehensive ecosystem of maritime service providers including ship management, maritime finance, law, shipbroking, marine insurance, technology providers, and more. SMF provides meaningful platforms for maritime leaders across the ecosystem to connect and deepen networks through platforms such as the SMF New Year Conversations, C-Suite Breakfast Series, and HR Leaders’ Dialogue. A hallmark of Maritime Singapore is the spirit of giving back for the collective good. Over the years, maritime companies have joined hands with SMF in giving back through our City Cycle, tree planting, and coastal clean-up, demonstrating to the larger community that maritime is an industry that cares. Welcome to Singapore I thank Splash Maritime Group for organizing the inaugural edition of Splash Singapore. I warmly welcome you to Singapore, and hope that you will enjoy the conference, expand your network, and create new partnerships.

OPINION

What shipping wants from Splash Singapore Shipping leaders heading to Splash Singapore want less conference theatre and more useful conversation, candid debate and ideas they can put to work

E

xecutives heading to the Fairmont this September are remarkably consistent about what makes a conference worth attending: challenge their assumptions, skip the corporate theatre and PowerPoints, talk honestly about what is actually working and make sure they leave with ideas they did not arrive with. Across shipowners, charterers, managers, technology leaders and market infrastructure providers, a remarkably consistent picture emerges. People want to be challenged. They want specificity rather than corporate messaging, disagreement rather than manufactured consensus and practical experience rather than predictions polished by communications departments. Above all, they want to leave thinking differently. New ideas and inspiration That is the test Torbjorn Gjervik, chief executive of Western Bulk, sets. A useful conference is not about how many meetings can be squeezed into a diary or how many business cards change hands. He wants “a new set of ideas and inspiration” and, ideally, to return to work seeing part of the market differently.

splashsingapore.com 8

Pacific Basin chief executive Martin Fruergaard makes much the same point. Events such as Splash Singapore provide somewhere to test assumptions, challenge conventional wisdom and learn from peers, he says. Success is leaving with a clearer sense of where shipping is heading — and perhaps a few good ideas worth borrowing. Bjorn Hojgaard, chief executive of Anglo-Eastern, takes the argument further. The head of the world’s largest shipmanager wants uncomfortable conversations rather than comfortable consensus. A worthwhile day should leave delegates with assumptions tested and perhaps “one or two ideas” capable of changing how they lead their businesses. That desire to have existing thinking challenged runs repeatedly through the interview series Splash has conducted in the run up to today’s event. Heidelberg Materials Trading shipping director Willem Vermaat says the best discussions are those that make him rethink his views. In a chartering environment where geopolitics, weather and disruption increasingly make historical data an imperfect guide to what happens next, he wants arguments from people who

see the market differently. For Gus Majed, founder and group CEO of Paratus, the word is simpler: candour. He wants people talking openly about what they earn, what they pay and where they disagree — and would regard it as a successful conference if somebody changes his mind about something he entered the room certain about. For Majed, an industry facing the repricing of Middle East risk needs hard commercial debate rather than broad statements about uncertainty. The tech viewpoint The same appetite for specificity is evident in the technology discussions. Marcura’s Janani Yagnamurthy argues that one person honestly explaining a problem they have solved can be more useful than a succession of previews about what technology might eventually achieve. Too many maritime events, she says, involve companies effectively presenting at each other. The attraction of the Splash format is straightforward: “No slides, no selling” and senior people actually talking. Matthew Talbot, co-CEO of Complexio, wants the conversation to move away from whether shipping should adopt AI and towards the

OPINION

The exact topic matters slightly less than how it is discussed much harder problem of making it work inside real organisations. The useful discussion, in his view, is about operational friction: what employees actually want removed from their workload, why they trust certain systems and what skills companies will need next. He would rather hear disagreement aired than artificial consensus reached. Klaveness Digital managing director Ingrid Kylstad also sees the conference room as an exchange rather than a sales channel. What appeals to her is a room of opinionated senior figures in unscripted discussion. She is particularly keen that cargo interests sit alongside owners and technology companies, arguing that digital debates too often happen without enough consideration of what customers actually need shipping to deliver. Making the connection That mixing of different parts of the industry is another recurring requirement. Baltic Exchange chief executive Mark Jackson sees Splash Singapore as somewhere the various strands of shipping can connect, allowing market participants to exchange ideas while testing how new risk-management

concepts might work in practice. In volatile markets, he argues, discussion between owners, charterers and other participants becomes particularly valuable. G2 Ocean chief executive Arthur English wants delegates to go further and stop discussing individual risks in isolation. Hormuz, Panama, emissions, cyber, crew welfare, freight hedging and regulation all interact commercially. A useful conference should therefore examine how risk can actually be allocated, priced and managed rather than merely adding another item to shipping’s growing list of things to worry about. Real-world consequences That emphasis on real-world consequences is especially strong among the tanker executives heading to Singapore. Borealis Maritime chief executive Christoph Toepfer wants a serious debate about how shipping is preparing for supply risk around Hormuz and what persistent geopolitical disruption means for charter rates, insurance, cargo availability and routing decisions. He also values the audience itself, citing the opportunity to reconnect with established contacts while meeting

new ones. Al Seer Marine’s Nitin Mathur likewise puts people at the heart of the event. Reconnecting with long-standing industry contacts matters, but so does creating new relationships and partnerships. On stage, he wants open discussion about market developments, technology adoption, investment decisions and the strategic challenges confronting owners. For Mathur, the combination of networking and practical insight is where the real value lies. Perhaps the clearest message from those preparing to attend Splash Singapore is that the exact topic matters slightly less than how it is discussed. Senior people do not need another event telling them that shipping faces uncertainty. They live it every day. They want to know what somebody else is doing about it. They want owners challenged by charterers, technology companies challenged by users, optimists challenged by sceptics and established assumptions exposed to people looking at the same problem from another part of the shipping chain. And once the sessions finish, they want enough time to continue those arguments over coffee, lunch or something stronger. splashsingapore.com 9

Fifteen minutes from the Fairmont Splash Singapore takes place in one of the best-positioned hotels in the city. Within a 15-minute walk of the Fairmont are three-Michelin-star dining, discreet cocktail bars, grand colonial hotels, major Southeast Asian art and some of the best skyline views in Asia. Here is how to use the neighbourhood properly

or delegates staying at Fairmont Singapore, one of the great luxuries is that there is very little reason to get into a car. The hotel sits at the junction of Singapore’s Civic District, Marina Bay and the old colonial centre, placing some of the city’s most polished dining, drinking and cultural options within easy walking distance. For a time-poor conference crowd, that matters. A free hour between meetings can become a decent lunch. An early finish can become cocktails at Raffles. And a dinner with a client need not involve 45 minutes of crawling through Singapore traffic. The obvious place to begin is directly across the road.

Raffles, properly Raffles Singapore remains one of those rare hotels that transcends hotel status and becomes part of the identity of a city. It is only a few minutes from the Fairmont and should be used, rather than merely photographed. The Long Bar is the famous stop, birthplace of the Singapore Sling and still one of the city’s great pieces of theatre. It is walk-in only, and the official advice is to go early or later in the evening if you want to avoid the thickest crowds. But for a Splash Singapore audience, the better option may be Writers Bar. Tucked into the Grand Lobby, it is quieter, smarter and better suited to conversation. The bar’s cocktail menu riffs on the hotel’s literary history, and this month it is also running an aperitivo hour from Tuesday to Thursday between 7pm and 9pm. It is the sort of place to take somebody when you actually want to hear what they are saying. If the weather behaves, Raffles Courtyard is another strong option: relaxed, alfresco and far less formal,

with Southeast Asian small plates and cocktails in a garden setting. For dinner, Raffles has become a formidable destination in its own right, with contemporary French cooking at 1887 by André, refined Chinese at 藝 yì by Jereme Leung, wood-fire cooking at Butcher’s Block and the historic Tiffin Room for North Indian cuisine. The serious table: Odette If there is one restaurant within walking distance that requires advance planning, it is Odette. Set inside the National Gallery Singapore, around ten minutes from the Fairmont, Julien Royer’s threeMichelin-star restaurant remains one of the city’s great dining rooms. Modern French in style, it is about precision, produce and long-form dining rather than spectacle. This is not the place to squeeze in a hurried business lunch between sessions. It is the place to clear the diary, invite the right people and give the evening over to it. The setting helps. The National Gallery occupies the former Supreme

Court and City Hall buildings, two of Singapore’s most important civic landmarks, now joined into one extraordinary cultural space. Even delegates with limited interest in art should walk through. The architecture alone is worth it, and the gallery’s collection of Singaporean and Southeast Asian art provides a refreshing change from charts, freight rates and panel discussions. If Odette feels too elaborate, National Kitchen by Violet Oon offers a completely different experience in the same building, serving polished Singaporean cooking in an elegant dining room with a verandah overlooking the city. For visiting clients who want local flavour without the heat, queues or uncertainty of a hawker centre, it is an easy choice. Five minutes in the opposite direction from the Fairmont is CHIJMES, the 19th-century convent complex whose white Gothic chapel and courtyards make it one of the prettiest places in central Singapore

after dark. For a higher-end dinner, Whitegrass is the standout. The restaurant describes its cooking as French fusion, and its intimate scale makes it well suited to small groups. It also offers private-event options for larger parties and operates with a smartelegant dress code. CHIJMES works best when you want somewhere that feels distinctly removed from the conference environment without committing to a cross-city journey. Arrive for a drink, stay for dinner and walk back to the Fairmont afterwards. That ability to move through the evening on foot is one of the understated pleasures of this part of town.

cocktail-making and stays open until 1am, making it an obvious place for the inevitable post-conference conversation that somehow becomes the most useful meeting of the day. Walk to the water Not every free hour needs to involve eating or drinking. Leave the Fairmont, cross the Padang and head towards Marina Bay. Within around 15 minutes, the city opens out dramatically. The old civic buildings give way to the Esplanade, the Fullerton, Singapore’s financial towers and the sweep of Marina Bay. Go in the early evening, when the temperature drops and the city lights begin to come on.

Sometimes the best answer is upstairs There is also a compelling argument for not leaving the Fairmont complex at all. The adjoining Swissôtel The Stamford is home to SKAI on level 70, with huge views over Marina Bay. It serves premium steaks, seafood, afternoon tea and cocktails and works particularly well for entertaining because the setting does most of the work for you. Book around sunset if you can. For cocktails without even using the lift very much, ANTI:DOTE at Fairmont is another useful address. It specialises in more experimental splashsingapore.com 23
