Timber! Own a Piece of History

County’s Final Forum on Cannabis Held in Nipomo

he Pismo Beach Pier is for sale, at least pieces of it. The City of Pismo Beach is selling 60,000 square feet of salvaged wood from the pier in an effort to raise funds for the structure’s rehabilitation, as well as to share a bit of history for those interested. After several inquiries from citizens concerning what the city planned on doing with the removed wood, officials decided to make the pieces available for purchase. Ben Fine, director of public works and city engineer for Pismo Beach, said that there is no official estimate on the amount of money the fundraiser may yield, but half a million would be a pleasing result. “We don’t know what the demand will be, it’s an 8 million dollar project, almost $9 million project,” said Fine, “If we could raise $500,000, we would be happy.”

ess than two years after the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 to deny a medical marijuana dispensary just south of Nipomo, County planning staffers held the last in a series of pubic forums in the town regarding the “evil weed.” The County’s Department of Planning and Building Department has been ordered to work up a permanent land use regulation governing cannabis in the County’s unincorporated communities, which covers Nipomo, Oceano, Avila Beach, Los Osos, Cambria and more. The idea is to have something ready for the Board of Supervisors to read in August 2017. The April 12 meeting, in an overflowing Nipomo Community Services District hearing room, was the third such event held to gather public input with the others in Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo earlier in the month.
