A LETTER FROM OUR FOUNDER & CEO
March arrives on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau with a sense of measured momentum. Interest remains strong from those seeking to make the Plateau home for part of the year, drawn not only by its natural beauty, but by the lifestyle and permanence it offers. A number of meaningful transactions have already been completed, and demand across key segments of the market continues with steady conviction as the season unfolds.
This issue of NC Living reflects the sense of renewal and forward motion that defines life on the Plateau in early spring. Within these pages, we explore adventure and elevated living both near and far — from Sapphire and Geneva to Kyoto — highlighting luxury, craft, and a deep connection to place. In recognition of more than a decade of local advocacy, each 2026 issue will also spotlight one of the six towns that make up the Plateau, beginning a yearlong celebration of the communities that give this region its distinct character.
One of the most important conversations shaping today’s market, both here on the Plateau and across many feeder markets throughout the Southeast, is pricing. Over the past two years, as conditions have recalibrated, the distance between aspiration and outcome has widened. Properties distinguished by location, views, and thoughtful finishes continue to command attention, yet even the most compelling offerings are met with discernment. Buyers are deliberate, informed, and increasingly guided by value rather than urgency.
Bringing a property to market is far more than an administrative exercise. It is a process that demands strategy, discipline, and intent. Sellers should understand not only how their property is presented, but what is being invested on their behalf and why. Simply accepting an inflated price or relying on negotiation constrained by inexperience or limited support rarely produces the outcome a property deserves. In a market that rewards precision, preparation, and execution, these distinctions matter.

In real estate, the difference between a good result and a truly exceptional one is rarely the property alone. More often, it is the judgment applied behind the scenes.
Choose an advisor who understands timing, positioning, negotiation, and long-term value. One who looks beyond listings to outcomes. Because in property, as in life, being selective is not a luxury. It is a discipline.

SPRING AWAKENINGS
INTERIORS THAT WELCOME THE NEW SEASON IN
Spring has a habit of sneaking up on us in the mountains. One day the fire is still lit, then next, the windows are flung open and the house feels, suddenly, heavier than it should.
Darker. Too winter-worn.
Since Plateau homes’ interiors are shaped by commanding stone hearths, weighty timber, and a reverence for craftsmanship, spring is about refreshing and recalibration to complement these features, rather than full-on reinvention. If you’re considering a seasonal update, your aim should be not to strip away character, but to let light, air, and softness return, gently and with an eye on longevity.
hat instinct aligns neatly with broader design thinking. According to the American Society of Interior Designers, nearly three-quarters of homeowners now favor interiors that can evolve gently over time rather than being overhauled with each trend cycle. Spring, then, becomes an exercise in editing and refinement; a way of letting your home breathe again.
Highlands-based interior designer and ceramicist Deneece Harrell of Studio DH works across mountain homes with a deep sensitivity to setting and how spaces are truly lived in. For her, spring is not about transformation, but about awakening what already exists. Here, she reveals how to make your home feel spring-ready.
LIGHT FIRST, ALWAYS
After winter, light is the first luxury. It can transform a room entirely, yet Plateau abodes, with their heavy drapery and winterweight textures, often keep it imprisoned.
“Mountain homes closed for the winter come alive with the coming of spring,” says Deneece. “Creating seating vignettes that take in the view — while still cozy to the warmth of the fireplace — enlivens the heart of the home and embraces its intimacy.”
FRESH COLOR, FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Spring 2026 colors are drawn from nuanced, natureinformed palettes. Pantone’s Color of the Year is Cloud Dancer, an airy off-white, while forecaster WGSN is extolling hues borrowed from the gentler side of nature: the muted sweep of mineral strata, the pale wash of an early-morning sky, and the green of moss underfoot.
Picture soft limestone, chalky off-whites, tender terracotta, and pale spring greens. Pleasingly, these are all tones that resonate beautifully with the organic materials and architecture of mountain homes. “I enjoy analysing the light and colours of the environment — the stone, the view, the way a home rests in its setting — and then customising the palette to that,” Deneece explains, “rather than following a trend.”

Rather than stripping rooms back, she recommends subtle spatial shifts that allow daylight to travel more freely — arranging furniture to honour both the landscape and the hearth, and letting the room respond to how it’s actually lived in during the season.
Spring invites reassessment. Winter curtains can be swapped for softly woven linen, and reflective surfaces used sparingly to carry brightness into shadowed corners. The result is illumination that flatters materials instead of blinding the eye.
Her preferred spring tones mirror the surrounding landscape: “warm corals and soft rusts that echo pineneedle groundcover, greens ranging from bright chartreuse moss to the deep green of rhododendrons, and subtle blues that reflect the hazy Blue Ridge mountains.”
Neutral foundations, particularly in kitchens, allow these seasonal shifts to shine. “A restrained base gives flexibility,” she notes, “so spring flora, fruits, and vegetables can take centre stage.”
If repainting entire rooms sends you into a mild panic, take heart: spring refresh doesn’t demand a full commitment. Think of colour like a well-timed accessory. Ceilings can soften a lofty space, cabinet interiors might lend a hint of warmth, and upholstery updates can refresh a room without elbowing the existing décor aside.

TEXTURE THAT TALKS
In mountain interiors, texture does the heavy lifting, and spring is about refining, not adding weight. “Layering and a variety of lighting options are the real workhorses of a mountain home,” says Deneece. “Layers allow emphasis to shift seasonally, highlighting objects collected over time rather than replacing them.”
She pairs soft natural fibres with performance fabrics that “mimic the look and feel of nature, while remaining practical.” The goal is an interior that feels inviting, relaxed, (and crucially) easy to live with. “Hands-and-feet-on living matters here,” she adds. “A home should welcome you in, not ask you to tiptoe.”
EDITING: LESS IS LUXE
Spring is also a season of subtraction. From extra throws and decorative objects to miscellaneous clutter, winter’s accumulation can weigh heavily on a home. Editing allows the inherent beauty of architectural details to shine. Mantels reclaim presence, beams read as intentional, and space itself feels generous.

Don’t feel you need to ruthlessly declutter, simply bring back balance. Remove things like weighty cushions, seasonal décor, candle clusters, and superfluous knick-knacks that have slowly accumulated. Then, group remaining objects purposely, favouring fewer, meaningful pieces before storing winter accessories and reintroducing lighter ceramics, glass, or natural elements.
BRINGING THE OUTDOORS IN
For spring, the most compelling interiors favor sculptural simplicity: a single branch in a tall vessel, a small cluster of wildflowers, or potted herbs that are as useful as they are beautiful. This approach honours the landscape beyond the window while keeping interiors serene and considered.
When it comes to greenery, Deneece favours restraint and seasonality. “The sculptural branches of rhododendron and mountain laurel are always a welcome sight in early spring,” she says, “as we wait for the hydrangeas, ferns, and dahlias to arrive.” Fern heads and bright mosses, placed simply, become symbols of renewal, a way of acknowledging the landscape without overpowering the interior. The effect is deliberate, elegant, and deeply rooted in place.

SHIFT FURNITURE, DON’T REPLACE
Before new acquisitions are considered, ask whether repositioning can renew a room. Floating seating slightly away from the fireplace, angling chairs toward the view, or simply shifting a rug can create an immediate sense of freshness. Indeed, spatial novelty, psychologists argue, triggers a subtle dopamine response — the joy of change without the expense.
Often, the most effective refresh is simply a new point of view. Deneece recommends rethinking how rooms are used as the season changes, drawing seating toward views, creating intimate groupings for games or shared meals, and allowing spaces to flex between winter warmth and spring openness. These small adjustments, she confirms, “enliven the heart of the home without disturbing its soul.”
TIMELESSNESS VS TRENDS
Perhaps the most pressing question in spring design is: how to balance current trends with enduring appeal? The answer lies in restraint and selectivity. Will the changes still feel right when the first frost returns? Do they honour the mountain setting? Can they evolve as the house itself evolves?

Beautiful interiors honor what is permanent while allowing seasonal refinement to shine. The result is a home that does not merely look refreshed; it feels attuned, responsive, and alive.
A SEASONAL RESET
Ultimately, spring in the mountains is about sensitive recalibration by softening textures, coaxing in the sun, refreshing color, and allowing space to breathe. In homes defined by craftsmanship, stone, it is a season for subtlety, for letting their existing beauty re-emerge.
When approached with intelligence and taste, a seasonal renewal can make a home feel both current and eternal, a rare kind of luxury that resonates long after the last blooms fade. Above all, the best spring refresh doesn’t announce itself with fanfare; it simply makes life feel a little brighter, a little lighter, and absolutely worth lingering in.
SPRING REFRESH
CHEAT SHEET
FRESH FLORALS, MINUS THE FUSS
Reed diffusers, scented candles, or small vases of wild blooms. Let your home smell as fresh as it looks. Bonus points for fragrances that nod to the mountains: lilac, pine, or soft herbaceous notes.
LIGHTER, BRIGHTER LINENS
Swap out winter heavies for crisp cotton bedding, table linens, and soft throws. Think: tables dressed for spring, sofas brightened with buttery yellows or blush pinks, and bedrooms that beckon lingering mornings.
OUTDOOR ENTERTAINING READY
New garden furniture, colourful cushions, or a set of stylish dining chairs instantly turns patios and decks into spring-ready social hubs.
ARTFUL GREENERY
Indoor plants or bonsai bring life and a touch of wilderness indoors, perfectly bridging the insideoutside connection mountain homes do so well.
SEASONAL ACCENTS
Think small decorative objects in muted spring colours — ceramic bowls, trays, or vases — that nod to the season without screaming “holiday décor.”
WINDOW REFRESH
Swap or launder curtains, or add lightweight sheers to let in more light. Sometimes, a simple change in how daylight moves through a room is all it takes to feel spring-like.

THE LISTENING FOREST

“The forest greeted us in stillness. We listened to the sound of wind in the trees, dry leaves crunching underfoot, the rushing of a nearby river. Kobayashi, our guide, picked a leaf off a Japanese katsura tree, which immediately gave off a sweet caramel smell—but only in autumn, after the leaf changes color. A few steps later, he pointed out the sansho pepper plant (with berries used in eel dishes and leaves marinaded in soy sauce for rice dishes), the kabuto flower (named for its shape resembling a kabuto, or a samurai helmet), the urushi tree (the sap of which is used for Japanese lacquer).
Wind stirred through cedar branches above, and the path softened beneath our feet. We walked mostly in silence, the soundscape unfolding around us. Even the bitter scent of the kusagi—the “stinky tree”—was part of the forest’s voice. Kobayashi held out a sprig of kuromoji. “Each smells different, depending on where it grows,” he said. I inhaled and understood: we weren’t here to observe. We were here to listen.”
OUBAITORI, WABI-SABI, AND THE HEALING RITUALS OF AMAN KYOTO
word S by patricia laurent
THE FOREST BEGINS TO SPEAK
In Japan, the forest quietly welcomes us. The air is gentle, full of memories, and it carries the weight of cedar and stone. Here, one does not simply enter the forest; instead, one is received by it.
The profound cultural philosophy of animism teaches us to recognize the kami ( 神 ), which are the sacred spirits that are believed to inhabit all things, including mountains, streams, wind, trees, and plants. A rustle in the bamboo or the sudden hush before it rains both signify the presence of kami, acting as a gentle reminder that all life is animated by spirit.
This timeless reverence for the natural world is a profound acknowledgment of an unseen, everpresent harmony of all living things. Central to this spiritual dialogue with nature is the practice of shinrin-yoku ( 森林浴 ), which the West calls forest bathing. Developed in modern times but rooted in timelessness, shinrin-yoku opens a pathway through the natural world. Here, the practice of forest bathing becomes a return to the senses, to the self, and to something far older than words.
The healing is subtle and peaceful, such as a slowing of breath, a softening of thought, or a lightening of spirit that begins in the chest and moves outward like ripples in a still pool. Each step into the woods invites the body to slow and the mind to soften as it lives in the moment.
The practice of forest bathing has its spiritual roots deep within the ancient heart of Japanese animism. Both major religions of Japan, Shinto and Buddhism, revere forests as realms of the divine.
Health benefits of forest bathing include lowering stress hormones, improving immunity, and enhancing emotional well-being. Long before science validated these benefits, Japanese culture understood that nature and humankind are intimately connected physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

BRIDGES BETWEEN FOREST AND SELF
Japan’s language and philosophical traditions describe subtle yet powerful connections between people and the forest. Through words and concepts refined over centuries, nature’s fleeting moments are captured with poetic precision instead of passing unnoticed. Such words do more than merely describe the natural world; they help us enter into a deeper relationship with it. As we practice forest bathing, we understand that these cultural nuances can awaken a more attentive, contemplative presence, allowing us to see, hear, and feel the forest with greater clarity and reverence.
Komorebi describes sunlight filtering through leaves, each flicker a dance of shadow and gold. Kawaakari is the shimmering glow of moonlight on water. Kogarashi refers to the year’s first chilly wind brushing leaves from their branches in one breath.
Together, these concepts form the spirit of kachou fuugetsu, which means “flower, bird, wind, moon.” This ancient phrase speaks of the deep self-knowledge that arises through close attention to the rhythms of the natural world. These words do not simply name things. Instead, they reveal feelings, sensations, and seasons of the soul.
Woven into this sensory experience are the three guiding philosophies of wabi-sabi, oubaitori, and shizen. Each of these is a subtle teaching drawn from centuries of Japanese spiritual reflection. Each one meets the forest like an old friend.

Wabi-sabi ( 侘寂 ) is the beauty of things gently worn by time. This concept nudges us to see beauty in impermanence, imperfection, and incompleteness, which are qualities abundantly displayed in nature. A flower slowly wilting, an ancient tree unevenly growing, or a stone path gradually eroding all demonstrate that imperfect detail holds profound beauty. By embracing these imperfections, we begin to release the modern compulsion for perfection and find peace in life’s natural ebb and flow.

Oubaitori ( 桜梅桃李 ), another delicate thread of Zen philosophy, complements wabi-sabi by celebrating individuality and personal growth. Derived from the blossoming patterns of cherry, plum, apricot, and peach trees—each flower beautiful yet unique—oubaitori teaches patience and self-compassion. In nature, each tree blossoms in its own perfect time, teaching us to respect our personal pace and journey without comparing ourselves to others. It is a quiet reminder to honor our own rhythm, to walk our own path, and to celebrate other people’s journeys without envy.
Shizen ( 自然 ) is about nature’s effortless harmony. Derived from the Daoist word ziran, it means “arising naturally.” The rhythm of nature is unhurried and whole. In the forest, shizen appears in the curve of a branch, the tilt of a fallen leaf, or the random elegance of wild growth.
With these philosophies to guide us, shinrinyoku becomes a way of seeing, a way of being. We begin to understand that the forest does not demand our improvement, only our presence.
THE RYOKAN SPIRIT REIMAGINED
When one first enters the sanctuary of Aman Kyoto, nestled in the foothills beneath Mount Takagamine, there is a distinct sense of stepping beyond the ordinary realm. The city’s hum fades away to be replaced by the murmur of leaves, the peaceful babble of streams, and the fragrance of cedar and hinoki ( 檜 ). It is here, in the heart of an ancient forest garden, that one can truly understand the Japanese philosophies of oubaitori, wabi-sabi, and shizen. These guiding ideals offer spiritual clarity and the therapeutic resonance of forest bathing.
Aman Kyoto sits within what was once the Kamiyagawa forest. The forest garden is not overly manicured; instead, it is carefully maintained yet authentically wild. Every corner reveals a spontaneous beauty: komorebi, sunlight filtering through leaves; kawaakari, moonlight softly reflected on water; and kogarashi, the first chilly wind of autumn that softly dislodges leaves. Such nuanced harmony fosters a therapeutic space where guests can reconnect with their innate selves and rediscover a profound spiritual balance.
The sanctuary’s rooms are inspired by the traditional ryokan. Here, Aman Kyoto harmonizes centuries-old Japanese hospitality with contemporary elegance. The minimalist suites are built with natural wood and stone, reflecting the pared-back perfectionism that Aman is renowned for. Each room, with its quiet simplicity, captures the wabi-sabi aesthetic of beauty in understated imperfection.
The private onsen ( 温泉 ), which are natural hot spring baths, are carved from cedar and stone. In Japanese tradition, onsen are sacred places of healing, where water from deep beneath the earth carries minerals that cleanse and restore. To enter them is to be wrapped in both heat and heritage.

Meals at Aman Kyoto embody mindful indulgence, inviting guests to partake in silent breakfasts. As a meditative act designed to heighten sensory awareness, every bite, each aroma, and the hushed sounds of the surrounding forest become part of a profound and mindful dining experience. This conscious simplicity underscores the Zen ethos, drawing guests into a richer experience of the present moment. Nothing is rushed. Everything matters.
THE SECRET GARDENS OF TAKAGAMINE
The gardens of Aman Kyoto, once known as Kamiyagawa Garden, carry a storied past, echoing the artistry and philosophy of Hon’ami Koetsu, the famed Edo-period craftsman. As they wander the winding paths beneath ancient cedars, guests feel the history woven into the fabric of the landscape. Each stone, each bloom, seems imbued with a restful spirit, guiding visitors back in time.
Guests can further deepen their cultural immersion through mindful activities such as ikebana, the traditional art of flower arranging, and miniature-garden crafting under the calm guidance of Aman Kyoto’s expert gardeners. Such practices foster a deeper appreciation of nature’s transient beauty, reinforcing the spiritual lessons inherent in Aman’s secluded sanctuary.
A RETURN TO LIGHT
We often think of luxury as abundance or grandeur. It is time unhurried. Silence that deepens rather than empties. A single persimmon placed in a ceramic bowl. A path through the forest where nothing must be said. Aman Kyoto’s forest bathing does not offer an escape but rather an invitation to reconnect deeply with the natural rhythms from which modernity has distanced us. It reminds us that to reconnect with nature is, above all, to reconnect with ourselves.
In the tranquil meditation hall with open shoji screens facing moss-laced boulders, monks teach us how to listen, not to them but to the self. There is no dogma here, only breath and stillness. Time loosens its grip. Space expands. The spirit softens.
This is kikou ( 帰光 ), a return to light. A return to rhythm. A remembering of the still world within.
In the scent of hinoki, in the uneven surface of an aged rock, and in the hush before snowfall, there lies healing. There lies beauty.
And in the forest that listens, we are found.

“In the way of the forest, the soul remembers: Harmony is not something we seek — it is where we began.”

BU RLIN GAME
There are places on the Plateau that feel well designed, and then there are places that feel lived-in. A place where routines have softened into mindful rituals, and neighbors greet one another by name. Burlingame belongs firmly in the latter camp. Set at roughly 3,000 feet in Sapphire, this mountain community unfolds at an unhurried pace, shaped as much by its natural setting as by the people who return season after season, generation after generation.
At the heart of it all is Burlingame Country Club, a gathering place that does far more than connect the neighborhood. It sets the rhythm of daily life. While it’s possible to live in Burlingame without club membership, the country club is undeniably the gravitational center — the place where mornings begin, afternoons stretch long, and evenings end with familiar faces and mountain views.
COUNTRY CLUB IN SAPPHIRE

BUILT FOR BELONGING
Burlingame was purposefully planned as a mountain retreat for families and friends, and that intention still shows. Roads wind gently through hardwood forests, while homes are positioned to honor viewsheds, streams, and the natural contours of the land. There’s a strong sense of stewardship here — of caring for what exists rather than overpowering it.
That philosophy extends seamlessly into the club experience. Burlingame Country Club favors refinement over flash, offering a distinctly elevated lifestyle rooted in access — to outdoor pursuits, social connection, and a lifestyle that feels both active and restorative. The atmosphere is gracious, multigenerational, and confident in its ease. Jackets are optional. Good company is not.
FAIRWAYS SHAPED BY THE FOREST
Golf has long been Burlingame’s signature and remains a constant part of life here throughout the year. The 18-hole championship course is woven into the landscape, shaping not only how the community looks, but how it moves season after season. Fairways trace rivers and lakes, greens emerge from old-growth forest, and elevation changes — ranging from roughly 3,000 to 3,500 feet — keep every round engaging.
Originally designed by Tom Jackson, the course is now entering a thoughtful new chapter. A comprehensive renovation led by Bill Bergin is enhancing the overall layout while honoring the natural terrain that defines it. The updates focus on improving playability, flow, and long-term enjoyment, ensuring the course continues to feel both engaging and enduring.
Even for non-golfers, the course defines the community’s aesthetic. Homes overlook long fairway views, morning mist settles into the valleys, and the sound of a well-struck iron carries softly across the hills. It’s a setting that invites appreciation, whether you’re playing 18 holes or simply watching the sunlight change from the clubhouse deck.

MOVEMENT AND CONNECTION
Burlingame Country Club’s lawn sports culture is another defining thread, and croquet in particular is a well-established pastime. The regulation-sized croquet lawn, framed by mountain vistas, is a social hub as much as a sporting venue. Interclub matches, lessons, tournaments, and casual games blur the line between competition and camaraderie. It’s not unusual to see three generations sharing the lawn, each equally invested in the outcome.
Tennis and pickleball round out the racquet offerings, with Har-Tru tennis courts, professional instruction, and a steady calendar of interclub play. Whether you arrive with a competitive edge or are simply looking for movement and connection, the programs are designed to meet people where they are.
MEALS THAT MARK THE DAY
Food, unsurprisingly, plays a central role in Burlingame Country Club’s social fabric. The renovated clubhouse complex offers multiple dining environments, each with its own personality but a shared emphasis on quality and conviviality.

The panoramas in the Overlook Lounge set an inviting tone for casual drinks and light bites, while the Overlook Room offers a more refined fine-dining experience framed by expansive mountain views. Within it, the Presidents’ Room provides a private setting for intimate gatherings. Outside, the dining deck remains a favorite gathering place, alive with post-round energy and easy conversation.
Elevation 3042 adds a relaxed, all-day dining option with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and grab-andgo offerings, while a full wine cellar and thoughtful cocktail program round out the experience. It’s the kind of club where a quick lunch can easily turn into an afternoon spent catching up with friends.
MOUNTAIN WELLNESS
Burlingame Country Club’s commitment to wellbeing goes beyond recreation. Rejuvenate, the club’s spa, wellness, and fitness center, reflects a holistic approach to staying well year-round. Set against a serene mountain backdrop, the facility includes modern fitness equipment, group classes, private coaching, massage therapy, and spa services designed to support a wide range of needs and lifestyles.
The adjacent pool complex serves as another communal anchor. Part exercise space and part social commons, it’s where families gather and summer days seem to stretch a little longer than expected.
WHERE FAMILIES FIND THEIR PLACE
Burlingame’s sense of community extends well beyond the clubhouse and shows up most vividly in daily life. Dogs are a familiar presence here, riding along on golf carts or padding down the road on afternoon walks. By late afternoon, neighbors and their four-legged companions naturally gather at the dog park, where nearly three acres of fenced meadow along the Horsepasture River create an off-leash social scene unlike any other on the Plateau. It’s a place to cool off, stretch legs, and linger in easy conversation.
Families find that same ease in Burlingame’s shared outdoor spaces. The expansive kids’ park — with its large jungle gym, playhouse, swings, and shaded pavilion — invites unstructured play and long afternoons outside. The Horsepasture River runs through the heart of the community, offering

exceptional private fishing water with native brook and brown trout alongside stocked rainbows. Whether casting a line or simply spending time outdoors together, these everyday experiences shape Burlingame into a place where family life unfolds naturally.
LIVING IN BURLINGAME
Beyond the club, Burlingame offers a diverse mix of real estate options, from mountain-view homes and riverfront properties to lodge-style condominiums lining the golf course. Architectural styles lean toward timeless rather than trendy, reinforcing the sense that Burlingame is meant to endure.
What truly distinguishes the neighborhood, however, is its balance. Club membership is available upon application and approval and is not required for property ownership, allowing residents to enjoy Burlingame’s relaxed, welcoming lifestyle at their own pace. Some days revolve around tee times and tennis matches; others are spent hiking nearby trails, fishing local waters, or simply enjoying the quiet.

Burlingame has a way of reminding people why they came to the mountains in the first place. It’s not about checking boxes or chasing novelty. It’s about shared meals, friendly rivalries, laughter on the lawn, and the quiet satisfaction of belonging to a place that values both connection and calm.
In a region known for extraordinary communities, Burlingame stands out for its ease of living. Life here doesn’t demand attention — it invites it. And once you settle into its rhythm, it’s easy to understand why so many consider their time at Burlingame not just well spent, but among the very best of times.

You can live your entire life in North Carolina and still not scratch the surface of everything the state has to offer. One of those not-so-hidden gems is Gorges State Park.
Tucked right along the North Carolina-South Carolina border, Gorges State Park is less than an hour from Highlands and Cashiers. While it’s readily accessible, you’ll feel as though you’ve been transported miles from modernity.
For locals on the Plateau, Gorges has become something of a backyard monument. For visitors who discover the park for the very first time, it stands as a reminder that there’s still so much of America to uncover.
And for those willing to lace up their boots and follow the water, it delivers.
PRIMEVAL PARADISE
Gorges State Park already looks big, but it’s much larger than meets the eye. The park itself sprawls across nearly 7,500 acres along the state border, carved by the Horsepasture and Toxaway rivers as they emerge from the Blue Ridge Escarpment.
Part of the intrigue of Gorges is that it sits in what meteorologists call a “climatic bullseye” — a convergence of geography and weather patterns that brings the area nearly 90 inches of rain a year.
That rainfall creates a temperate rainforest territory that’s quite unique in the contiguous United States. A day’s hike will take you through dense patches of hardwood forests that suddenly open up on breathtaking spray cliffs. There are 26 waterfalls within the park’s boundaries, each one fed by the abundance of rain that carves and paints the landscape.
Along the way, you might stumble on some of our state’s rarest finds in rocky outcrops, including the Appalachian Flatrock plant and the Hickory Nut Gorge green salamander.
Even if you don’t spy the local wildlife, you’ll still be amazed. The gorges feel almost primeval, offering a glimpse of what these mountains looked like before roads and railways carved their way through.
RESORT RECREATION TO MODERN CONSERVATION
It’s easy to think that Gorges is simply the result of natural luck. But the land that became Gorges State Park also has a human history.
In the early 1900s, this corner of Transylvania County was a playground for the wealthy. But this group of people weren’t the first to come there. Local lore claims that the region’s native Cherokee called this area ta ha wey — “land of the red bird.”

The Toxaway Company built the grand Toxaway Inn in 1901 and completed the 540acre Lake Toxaway two years later. This drew Gilded Age vacationers who arrived by rail to escape the summer heat, and soon it became a destination for families whose names appeared in society pages.
Then came the floods of 1916.
Three hurricanes pummeled the region that summer, with the final storm dumping more than 20 inches of rain in a single day. On August 13, the earthen dam at Lake Toxaway collapsed, and more than five billion gallons of water roared through the gorge. Rumors say that the rush of water was so loud that those living in Brevard could hear the roar.

Remarkably, only one life was lost – that being a blind mule belonging to a logger named Neil Bowman, who heard the water coming and cut his team loose just in time.
If you don’t believe it, ask the owners of The Blind Mule, a local eatery originally located near Lake Toxaway and now in downtown Brevard!
The floods ended the resort era for Gorges. Over the next few decades, forests reclaimed the cutover slopes, and timber companies moved in.
By the 1980s, conservationists had begun recognizing what Gorges had to offer: an ecological treasure hiding in plain sight. In 1986, the nearby Horsepasture River earned a federal Wild and Scenic River designation. In the late 1990s, the North Carolina state government acquired 10,000 acres, setting aside more than 7,000 for what would become the state park.
Gorges State Park officially opened in 2009 with a new mission focused on wildlife conservation, education, and local recreation.

WATERFALLS AND WILDFLOWERS
If you ask what brings someone back to Gorges, they’ll tell you one thing: the waterfalls.
Everyone has their favorite trail, but the marquee hike leading from the Grassy Ridge entrance toward Rainbow Falls and Turtleback Falls along the Horsepasture River is a moderate trek that takes you through thundering cascades, misty overlooks, and the best that Gorges has to offer. On warm days, you can even wade in Turtleback’s smooth-rock swimming holes. Just be prepared for company — Rainbow Falls has earned its reputation!
For something closer to the visitor center, the Bearwallow Falls area offers a short, familyfriendly trail that leads to an overlook of Upper Bearwallow Falls. You can also find more challenging loops that take you deeper into the gorge toward Lower Bearwallow Falls.
But it’s not all hiking. The Auger Hole Trail is a favorite for mountain biking along the park’s western boundary, while anglers can cast for rainbow and brown trout in Bearwallow Creek and the Toxaway River. For overnight adventures, backpackers and horseback riders can slip into the less-traveled backcountry for a night under the North Carolina stars.
And because the park sits at elevation, the seasons bring variety. In the spring, you’ll find Gorges teeming with wildflowers. Summer brings out the best of the roaring waterfalls, and fall brings peak-season colors.
Even winter has its appeal. As shorter hours and chillier temperatures thin the crowds, you can catch excellent views through bare branches.
A DESTINATION TO REMEMBER
Gorges State Park is a North Carolina treasure. Whether you’re looking to reconnect with nature or seeking the thrill of untamed wilderness, Gorges has a way of balancing backcountry wildness with accessibility that all ages and stages can enjoy.
For those new to the area, the visitor center near Grassy Ridge doubles as an orientation hub and educational space. Plenty of picnic shelters throughout the park are perfect for a quick lunch or dinner in the wild, and the state has kept Gorges easy to navigate with well-signed trailheads and maps.

The best part? Gorges State Park isn’t a bucket-list destination that requires planning a major expedition. It’s big enough to provide everything you need from a state park and close enough for a quiet afternoon visit. It’s worth a spontaneous drive when the leaves are turning or the waterfalls are running high.
And like the best of Western North Carolina, it rewards those who show up ready to be awed by what water and time can create. This year, add Gorges State Park to your calendar — you won’t regret a moment in this American treasure.
Gorges State Park is located at 976 Grassy Ridge Road in Sapphire. The park is open daily; hours vary seasonally, so check ncparks.gov before you go. Admission is free. For trail conditions, program schedules, and camping reservations, visit ncparks.gov/ gorges-state-park or call (828) 966-9099.

NICOLAÏ BOTTLES HAND-ASSEMBLED AND PACKAGED
PARISIAN WORKSHOP. PHOTO
OF PATRICIA DE NICOLAÏ
Perfume, at first glance, is simply a collection of invisible molecules suspended in the air. Yet, from the moment a scent touches the skin, it becomes much more — a silent dialogue, a private memory, and an intimate story told without words. What makes certain fragrances draw us irresistibly toward them? Is it neuroscience, poetry, or perhaps the luxurious allure of rare ingredients? Could there be a hidden code or a secret language that connects these elements and makes fragrance speak so deeply to our souls?
In Patrick Süskind’s evocative novel-turnedfilm, “Perfume”, the protagonist Grenouille seeks the essence of a young woman captured in scent. Although his search turns dark, he uncovers a fundamental truth: fragrance is profoundly personal and inseparable from our identity. Like Grenouille, we, too, seek something intangible — a perfume that captures our essence. But how do we find this elusive scent?

THE INTIMATE DIALOGUE OF SKIN AND SCENT
In the sunlit gardens of Grasse, and beneath the flickering bulbs of Parisian boutiques, perfumery unfolds as both an art and a science. Here, in this sacred space of alchemical transformation, fragrance becomes more than just an ephemeral scent; it becomes a living entity, not merely applied, but awakened on the skin, with each note blooming differently, shaped by the subtle chemistry unique to each wearer. A single drop carries with it a mystical potential to stir the deepest recesses of the heart, unlocking long-buried emotions, or to reignite a forgotten flame. Science explains how this happens: the very moment we breathe in a scent, it bypasses rational thought and travels directly to the emotional center of the brain — the amygdala and hippocampus. Here, perfume does not speak in logic or reason, but in memories, emotions, and impulses. This invisible thread explains why scent can instantly transport us to forgotten moments as if we were traveling through time, encoding and recalling moments that define us.
THE ALCHEMIST: THE MASTER PERFUMER
To truly understand perfume, we must also understand the creator — the master perfumer, best described as a magician, a poet, and an alchemist all in one. Their work is not merely technical but also a spiritual act of creation, where with every drop of essence, they bring together molecules, emotions, memories, and metaphors. They walk in two worlds: the world of science, where they speak the language of molecular composition, volatility, and stability, and the world of art, where they conjure the delicate threads of emotion, memory, and dream. Their skill lies not just in crafting beautiful aromas but in their ability to intuitively understand how ingredients mingle and evolve
and how fragrance might resonate differently with every wearer. The delicate balance of notes, the orchestration of intensity and subtlety, the understanding of how each scent will unfold in time — this is their canvas. They are our interpreters of human experience, shaping raw materials into something profoundly emotional and personal.

DECODING THE FRAGRANCE PYRAMID
Yet, perfume’s storytelling does not rely solely on the hands of the alchemist; It also follows an elegant structure known as the fragrance pyramid, a threelayered composition of top, heart, and base notes. More than a simple arrangement of notes, the pyramid must tell the story carefully designed by the perfumer — a storyteller whose medium is scent.
TOP NOTES: FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The top notes greet us instantly. They are the spark of curiosity, drawing us into perfume’s narrative — the moment of first love. Light, volatile, and bright, the top notes are fleeting like a whispered promise. Citrus zest, fresh herbs, or delicate aldehydes burst upon the skin — a teasing, passing sensation that sets the stage for the drama to unfold. They are not meant to last, but their brief presence marks the beginning of a journey and a flirtation with the senses.
HEART NOTES: REVEALING THE SOUL
As the top notes fade, the heart opens, deepening into an intoxicating warmth. Here, the essence of the fragrance begins to reveal itself: the emotional core and the very soul of the composition. Floral notes such as jasmine and rose, or rich spices such as nutmeg, unfurl like the petals of a hidden flower, revealing layers of sensuality, passion, and memory. These notes deepen the emotional connection, resonating with the

wearer’s innermost feelings and desires. The heart is where the perfume truly blooms and where the fragrance takes on a life of its own, drawing you closer and pulling you deeper into the mystery.
• BASE NOTES: A LINGERING WHISPER
Finally, after the heart has passed, the base notes remain, a lingering imprint upon the skin — resilient, enduring, and profoundly intimate. Musk, amber, and sandalwood are the scents of the earth, distant forests, and a time before time. They feel like a quiet reverie that wraps itself around you, leaving its signature behind. They are the final act and the lasting memory, lingering long after the perfume’s first bloom has faded and imprinting the wearer with something timeless — something unforgettable.
When put together, these fragrant notes speak a universal yet infinitely personal language — a language whose code is deciphered uniquely by each wearer’s skin and memories.
THE
TREASURY
OF PRECIOUS INGREDIENTS
At the heart of fragrance also lie ingredients of rare beauty and legendary status. Each rare and precious raw material carefully nurtured, cultivated, and revered, with its own story to tell of lands far and near, becomes a character within the perfume’s narrative, elevating its scent to mythical proportions.
• OUDH
Dubbed the “black gold,” Oudh embodies the mystique of the East — the soul of the Orient, ancient and deep. Extracted from the resin of Aquilaria trees, Oudh is a rare, smoky treasure that lingers on the skin like a secret. It is a scent of the earth, timeless beauty, and deep, unspoken longing.
• JASMINE
Known as the Queen of the Night and handharvested under the moon’s tender gaze, jasmine is a fragrance that beckons with its honeyed sweetness and opulent sensuality. It is the scent of desire, passion, and the night itself.
• BULGARIAN ROSE
The symbol of eternal love, this precious flower, harvested at the break of dawn, exudes a richness that speaks of romance, history, and beauty. It is a scent that calls to the heart, evoking memories of soft, stolen kisses.
• ORRIS ROOT
The perfumer’s truffle, rare and exquisite, orris root is the essence of refinement — a fragrance that holds its beauty quietly with grace. It is the whispered elegance that lingers long after the perfume has faded.
• AMBERGRIS
The sperm whale’s mysterious by-product grounds florals and woods alike with marine, tobacco, and sweetly animalic nuances, anchoring perfume in depth and complexity.
Beyond the pantheon, other treasures — saffron strands plucked from Kerala fields, rare orchids distilled in secrecy, and sandalwood from grafted Mysore groves — carry their own stories. Together, they form the perfumer’s palette, awaiting the alchemist’s hand to envelope us deeper into a world of luxury, emotion, and beauty hidden in nature’s secrets.
IN QUIET CONVERSATION WITH AN OLFACTORY POET: PATRICIA DE NICOLAÏ
Today, in the realm of French perfumery, few names resonate with as much gravitas and quiet magic as Patricia de Nicolaï. Born into the illustrious Guerlain dynasty — a name synonymous with French luxury fragrance for over five generations — Patricia’s journey from heir to master perfumer is one steeped not only in legacy but in an insatiable passion to create fragrances that speak directly to the soul.
In her Paris atelier surrounded by delicate vials and rare essences, Patricia de Nicolaï shares her code reverently: “Perfume isn’t just a fragrance — it’s a language, subtle yet profound, personal yet universal.”
As the great-granddaughter of Pierre Guerlain and niece of Jean-Paul Guerlain, she was initiated into the sacred language of scent from an early age. To grow up surrounded by the legendary Guerlinade — the singular olfactory signature that has defined the House of Guerlain — is akin to being born amidst rare roses, haunting vanillas, and evocative tonka beans. Patricia notes, “Since childhood, I have been immersed in the Guerlinade, so distinctive and recognizable. When I founded my brand, Nicolaï, it was natural — even subconscious — that Guerlain’s legacy influenced me deeply.” Yet, despite this heritage, Patricia has always been profoundly independent and driven by a personal calling: “I had the Guerlain DNA embedded deeply in me, naturally,” she explains, “but I had to find my own voice. I wanted to express my own truths through scent, without constraints.”
In that search for her own path, Patricia discovered something profound: freedom, not only to choose ingredients she loved but also to trust her instincts unconditionally. “In the late 80s, I was already working as a perfumer, creating fragrances for large, prestigious brands. Yet, despite the prestige, there was frustration. My palette was restricted by budgets, by fashion,
and by marketing,” she explains thoughtfully. “That wasn’t perfumery — not as I understood it. My husband, Jean-Louis, saw this. One day he simply said, ‘Create your own perfumes, Patricia. No compromises.’ And that was it. Nicolaï was born from a single sentence and a shared belief in authenticity.”
For Patricia, the palette is sacred. Her artistry bridges science and intuitive poetry. Ingredients are not merely chosen; they are felt. Each raw material is a universe by itself. “People often don’t realize that a single natural ingredient is already a fragrance by itself. Take Turkish rose — hundreds of molecules, each adding depth, complexity, and emotion. Rose once captured my imagination entirely, then Oudh, and then cedarwood from Virginia, elegant and noble. Ingredients tell stories; they evoke memories and define periods of my life,” she explains, “Each choice is intimate, instinctual — an emotion translated into scent. That’s how perfume speaks, not through words, but through feelings.”

This interplay of ingredients is Patricia’s secret code and intuitive approach to scent-making. She points to her fragrance Bois Bélize as embodying this philosophy — it’s an ode to refined luxury. “Created five years ago, Bois Bélize is utterly distinctive, with a lingering sillage that seems almost mercurial adapting to the wearer whilst capturing precisely what luxury should be — recognizable, unforgettable, and timeless,” she notes.
Her thoughtful precision also comes through in the rituals she follows daily. “Perfume creation is discipline,” she emphasizes, citing the great perfumer Edmond Roudnitska. “You smell every day. Early mornings are best — the senses are sharpest. Then, stepping away is just as important — allowing the nose to rest and inviting inspiration to find you. For me, that happens most beautifully in the Jardin du Palais Royal, right by my atelier, or by traveling — Italy, Morocco, wherever fragrance breathes freely in the air.”
It is clear that her journey has been transformative; her genius lies not only in selecting materials but in finding the perfect perfume balance between science, poetry, intuition, the past, and the future, seamlessly blending her roles as an alchemist, poet, scientist, and storyteller.
Beyond creation, Patricia’s role extends to the custodianship of France’s perfumery heritage. As the first female president of the esteemed Osmothèque, a repository for the masterpieces of perfume history, she has become a guardian of the memory of scent itself. “Preserving these scents reminds me how perfume transcends time—it carries memories and emotions from generation to generation,” she explains.
Now, with her children Axel and Edwige by her side, she finds new inspiration and vitality: “When Axel joined, we created Ambre Cashmere — something fresh, bold, and completely new. Edwige challenges me again, bringing youthful energy. They inspire me profoundly, keeping me open, curious, and evolving.”
Patricia de Nicolaï is an alchemist whose creations speak directly to our most intuitive selves, bridging past and present, memory
and imagination, and discipline and passion. Her fragrances are not merely perfumes but an intimate, silent dialogue quietly understood between perfumer and wearer.
FINDING YOUR SIGNATURE FRAGRANCE
How, then, do we decode perfume’s secret language for ourselves? The answer lies in understanding our personal chemistry, our memories, and how fragrance interacts uniquely with our skin. Each scent choice is a declaration of self: a nuanced statement reflecting aspirations, moods, and memories and is both a mirror and a muse, shaping and revealing who we are.
1.
Begin your exploration slowly, first with blotters, which are absorbent strips that help catch the fleeting top notes. After a brief drydown, apply them lightly to the inner wrist or crook of the elbow; the warmth there mirrors body chemistry. Revisit the scent at intervals: 20 minutes for the heart and an hour or, sometimes, hours for the lingering base.
2.
Recognize that fragrance reacts uniquely to each individual’s chemistry. Factors such as pH balance, hydration, diet, and even emotion shape a perfume’s expression. Seasons, too, redefine perfume perception: fresh citrus notes resonate vibrantly in summer, while spicy, woody accords offer warmth in winter. The choice is purely personal.
THE FINAL REVELATION: PERFUME AS IDENTITY
Ultimately, perfume’s secret language defies simple classification. It is neither purely neuroscience nor solely poetry — neither merely rare ingredients nor simply personal chemistry. Rather, it exists in the interplay of all these forces: an unseen current of meaning and emotion unfolding quietly between scent and the one who wears it.
So, dear reader, as you stand at the threshold of discovery, ask not “Which perfume should I wear?” but “Which story shall I tell?” And listen closely: for in the alchemy of scent, your skin, at once canvas and catalyst, will unveil the answer even before you say a word.

DECADES of DEDICATION
BROKER SPOTLIGHT WITH MARSHA BRICKER
word S by robert mceveety
by molly harri S
For more than three decades, Marsha Bricker has been helping families find their dream homes on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau. Now a broker at Silver Creek Real Estate Group, she has built a career on a simple yet powerful principle. “I try to make every client feel like they’re my only client.”
“This is a relationship business,” she reminds us. “You build relationships. And I’m so proud and honored to have the clients I have.”
This client-first approach has made Marsha one of the top-10-producing agents on the Plateau, with a practice built almost entirely on repeat business and referrals. People who bought property from Marsha 10 or 20 years ago are calling her back when they’re ready to sell or when their children are looking to buy.
FINDING SAPPHIRE
Born and raised on Long Island, New York, just a stone’s throw from Manhattan, Marsha spent her young life immersed in the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple. After graduating from NYU with an undergraduate degree in marketing, a minor in finance, and a graduate degree in international
marketing, Marsha took a job at what is now Verizon and embarked on a corporate career that would take her across the country.
From Erie, Pennsylvania, where she met her husband, to Stamford, Connecticut, then Everett, Washington, and the Dallas-Fort Worth area in Texas, each new town seemed to shrink in size. And somewhere along the way, this big city girl fell in love with small-town living.
“I got my education with Midwesterners when I left the greater New York metropolitan area,” Marsha reflects. “I realized I should have left earlier. There’s a whole other world out there where people are really nice, nobody talks fast, everybody has time to listen to you.”
At the time of her husband’s retirement in the early 1990s, the couple owned a lot at Seabrook Island outside of Charleston, South Carolina. But the summer heat proved too much. As golfers, they explored properties throughout the region, traveling from Virginia to Georgia and spending weeks each year searching for the perfect location.
photography
They found Burlingame while it was still under construction. What immediately struck Marsha was the warmth of the community. Standing in line at the grocery store, she watched the cashier ask someone how they were doing and then stop to listen to the answer. “I found that charming,” she recalls. “I wanted to be like that. I wanted to be one of them.”
In 1992, Marsha and her husband made Sapphire their permanent home.
A NEW CAREER TAKES ROOT
At not yet 40, Marsha was significantly younger than most residents in what was then primarily a second-home community. The real estate agent who sold them their lot in Sapphire needed help. Marsha took the job, and she and her husband both obtained their real estate licenses.
While her husband decided commissionbased work wasn’t for him, Marsha discovered her calling.
“It took me a long time to find out what I was good at, and I’m good at real estate,” she says. “I love it. I’ve been doing it for 30-some odd years, and it’s just been a joy.”
Soon enough, Marsha decided to open her own office. She launched Showtime Properties, working out of the back room of what was then the Woodlands Inn in Sapphire. She grew her business over 12 years, weathering the boom years of the mid-2000s and the devastating crash of 2008. When a Brevardbased firm offered to open an office for her in Lake Toxaway in 2009, Marsha accepted the offer. She stayed with that firm for 12 years, building her reputation as one of the most knowledgeable and trusted brokers in the region.
DISCOVERING SILVER CREEK
But Marsha was ready for something new. She wanted more marketing support and a fresh direction. Having served as president of both the MLS and the Board of Realtors, she’d worked alongside Silver Creek Real Estate Group’s founder, Jochen Lucke, on various boards over the years. “I’ve always respected him,” Marsha says of Jochen. “He is an incredible businessman.”

She decided to make Silver Creek her home in January 2026. The decision came down to Jochen’s commitment to innovation and his investment in marketing. Silver Creek’s insistence on showcasing every home to its fullest, no matter the price point, matched the level of service Marsha has always provided for her clients. And, unlike national chains, Silver Creek adapts specifically to the unique Plateau market, tailoring every aspect of its approach to the region’s distinctive character and clientele.
For an agent with Marsha’s consistently strong track record, joining the firm meant gaining the marketing muscle to match three decades of expertise. After years of pouring her passion into every client relationship, she wanted a firm that would match her own commitment to excellence.
At Silver Creek, she found exactly that.
THE HEART OF THE PRACTICE
Marsha’s passion for real estate particularly shows when she’s helping first-time buyers. “I love to work with them,” she explains. “I can be a value because I have so much experience. I can walk them through the process. I know what the pitfalls are. I’ve been there, I’ve done that, I’ve made those mistakes, and I can help them through it.”
Over her career, she’s helped everyone from young couples buying their first home to executives purchasing multimillion-dollar estates.
But whether clients are spending $100,000 or $10 million, Marsha treats them exactly the same. Her success comes from the personal connection she creates with each client, treating every transaction with the same care, regardless of price point.
“They’re buying something that is probably the most expensive thing they’ll ever buy. And you have to treat it like that,” she says.
“I am passionate about my people, and I’m passionate about the business,” Marsha adds.
“That’s what sets me apart.” This passion, combined with her deep knowledge of the Plateau, has made her one of the most successful brokers in the region.
COMMUNITY ROOTS
Beyond real estate, Marsha has spent three decades giving back to the community she loves. She and her husband helped establish the animal shelter in Transylvania County, volunteered at the museum and library in Brevard, and for years have been involved with T.C. Henderson Elementary’s annual book sale.

“HER EXPERTISE TURNED AN INCREDIBLE DEAL INTO A LASTING INVESTMENT. THANK YOU, MARSHA!”
Emil B.
Marsha’s passion for literature has been a constant throughout her life. In every town she lived in, she started a book club. The one she founded in Sapphire 30 years ago is still going strong today.
An avid golfer, Marsha has been the club champion at Burlingame Country Club 13 times. However, she no longer plays competitively. “I only do what I enjoy now,” she says. “I really enjoy playing with my friends, but I don’t necessarily enjoy competing against them anymore.”
Every afternoon at 4 o’clock, Marsha meets with other dog owners for an off-leash walk with her three Australian Labradoodles: Hoover, Sassy, and Jake. During the summer, as many as a dozen dogs run together. “It’s like a little microcosm of humanity,” she observes. “All the dogs get along. You get a new dog, and all the dogs go over and start sniffing, but eventually that new dog gets assimilated, and they all go running off together.”
THREE DECADES OF EXCELLENCE
From that back-room office in a mountain inn to Silver Creek Real Estate Group, Marsha Bricker has built her career on relationships, expertise, and an unwavering commitment to every client. She’s helped hundreds of families find their mountain homes, solved countless problems, and earned a reputation as one of the Plateau’s most trusted brokers.
After more than 30 years, Marsha Bricker continues to do what she loves, with the same passion, dedication, and personal touch that have defined her career from the very beginning.

THE LAKESIDE CITY AT ITS MOST LUCID
GENEVA SKYLINE AT DUSK. PHOTO BY SEAN PAVONE STOCK.ADOBE.COM 100

BLOOM in
Springtime in Geneva is a flirtation with beauty itself. The city’s slate-gray rooftops and stately Belle Époque façades soften under warming sunbeams, gardens blush into bloom, and the lake — sometimes glassy, sometimes kissed by the breeze — reflects a city awakening gracefully from winter.
Teetering on the western shores of Lac Léman (known as Lake Geneva in English) on Switzerland’s westernmost tip that pinpricks into France like a needle, this city of diplomacy has long held a global stage. Historically a hub for trade, finance, and international treaties (the United Nations headquarters are here), Geneva has maintained an irresistible cosmopolitan air that blends the precision of a Swiss watch (more of those later) with French flair.
Everyone who visits falls in love. From Charlie Chaplin to David Bowie, many an icon has bought a lakeside pied-à-terre on Lake Geneva’s shores, adoring the privacy and idyllic Alpine backdrop. Culture pulses through every corner, too, be it the red-tiled halls of the Grand Théâtre or the contemporary exhibitions at the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire.
And spring is when Geneva truly comes alive: lakeside terrace cafés open for sun-soaked brunches, cruises resume their gentle glide across Lac Léman, and Jardin Anglais’s legendary Flower Clock is replanted in fresh seasonal blooms — a joyful emblem of the Peace Capital’s seasonal renewal.
SIGHTSEEING, SWISS-STYLE
Geneva’s spring scenery makes exploration a delight. A lakeside promenade walk is mandatory. Head to Quai du Mont-Blanc, where swans glide alongside joggers and the epic Jet d’Eau gushes its canon of water 140 meters into the air.
Art and history buffs will appreciate the Old Town, with its cobbled streets, St. Peter’s Cathedral, and boutique shops tucked behind pastelpainted façades. While you’re there, check out the Promenade de la Treille’s famous chestnut tree; it’s the city’s official harbinger of spring when the first bud blooms.
Café culture is huge here. A café crème on Place du Bourg-de-Four, paired with buttery croissants, is the perfect start to a morning of wandering before perusing Hermès and Hublot on Rue du Rhône. For lunch? Head to Monsieur Ador on Quai GustaveAdor, smack bang in front of the Jet d’Eau. All opulent velvets in crimson and teal, this smart brasserie is inspired by James Bond and serves finessed classics from wild sea bass to duck ragu tagliatelle.

AERIAL VIEW OF THE ALPS OVER GENEVA. PHOTO BY DIEGO

See tulips and cherry blossoms paint the lakeside in candy-colored pastels at the Jardin Anglais. For more floral beauty, don’t miss the Botanical Gardens, home to over 16,000 plant species, or the Parc des Bastions, where chess enthusiasts and sunseekers share the lawns beneath Renaissance-era statues.
Geneva is home to the titan of nuclear research, CERN, and it’s open to the public. Science buffs and kids alike can get their geek on at the CERN Science Gateway, where immersive exhibitions, hands-on experiments, and interactive installations unravel the mysteries of the universe, from particle physics and antimatter to the very origins of time and space.
To really unlock city benefits, grab a Geneva City Pass, which offers you free or discounted activities from lake cruising and fondue experiences to guided wine and heritage tours. For the sweettoothed, a Choco Pass is a must, letting you indulge in tasting plates from local chocolatiers of your choosing.

STAY: LA RÉSERVE GENÈVE
Geneva has no shortage of grand Belle Époque hotels flexing their chandeliers in the city center, and they are, undeniably, handsome. But insiders in the know do something different. They head slightly out of town and check into La Réserve Genève.
Set within 10 acres of parkland, this lakeside sanctuary feels blissfully removed from the city’s formality, yet still totally connected. Here, Geneva loosens its tie. Adults exhale deeply, children roam freely, and the Alps appear to be performing solely for your benefit.
Jacques Garcia-designed rooms and suites are lavishly appointed with a luxurious African safari lodge-inspired aesthetic. Lake suites are heavenly, with Lac Léman unfurling before your terrace and Mont Blanc hovering theatrically in the distance.
Wellness is where La Réserve truly shines. The 2,500-square-meter Spa Nescens is a destination in its own right, pioneering a holistic approach that blends science, longevity, and indulgence.

There are pools, fitness facilities, personal trainers, and a tennis center so well regarded that it’s hosted clay-court legends.
Dining is equally accomplished, with a choice of three restaurants. Chic Le Loti has a globally inspired menu of fine dining fancies. Then there’s Tsé Fung, Switzerland’s only Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant, while lighter, balanced fare is served at Café Lauren — perfect after a morning on the lake or an afternoon in the spa.
Despite its secluded feel, civilization is never far from this glorious urban resort. Come spring, you can glide into Geneva by private motoscafo, just twelve minutes across the lake. And then there are the children. At many luxury hotels, kids are politely tolerated. At La Réserve, they are celebrated. La Petite Réserve offers creative workshops, sports challenges, and the kind of freedom rarely found in five-star settings.
Add paddleboarding, rowing, wakeboarding, and lakeside lounging, and you have a hotel that understands modern luxury perfectly. Not showy, not stiff; just brilliant.

THE ALPS ARE CALLING
One does not visit Geneva without straying beyond it. The city may be elegant and composed, but its greatest seductions lie just outside the frame where mountains rise majestically and lakeside villages bloom.
Begin with Mont Salève, Geneva’s unofficial back garden. Technically in France but reached by a swift cable car, it delivers sweeping views of the city, Lake Geneva, and on a clear spring day, both Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn, posing obligingly in the distance. Trails range from gentle rambles to more spirited hikes, all generously rewarded with fresh air and cinematic vistas.
Nature lovers should also look to the Les Mosses region, where spring hiking gives you reawakening alpine meadows, trails lined with wildflowers, and air that feels noticeably clearer. It’s the sort of place that reminds you why the Swiss take walking so seriously.
For something softer, drift across the lake to Yvoire, a perfectly preserved medieval village that feels as though it has been curated rather than inhabited. Come spring, its cobbled lanes overflow with flowers, window boxes, and wisteria, earning it the title of one of France’s most beautiful villages and Instagram’s quiet darling.
For urban contrast, Lausanne (halfway between the Jura Mountains and the Alps) offers a youthful, cultural counterpoint to Geneva’s polish. Home to museums, design-forward cafés, and a lively lakeside promenade, it’s a city best explored on foot — preferably with frequent stops for espresso and people-watching.
Then there is Montreux, dramatic, musical, and unapologetically glamorous. Hugging the lake beneath steep hillsides, it has long attracted artists and icons. Both Mick Jagger and Freddie Mercury once called it home. A stroll along its palm-lined promenade feels part Riviera, part rock-and-roll pilgrimage.
A week or so in Geneva is enough to whet the appetite, but not nearly to satisfy it. Why not head north to Basel in June for its iconic eponymous art fair? Or slip south into France to Lyon in just two hours, where Renaissance streets and legendary bouchons restaurants await. This corner of Europe rewards the curious as cities, culture, and cuisine spill across borders.

OUR TOWNS

CELEB R ATING
10 Y E ARS

Continuing NC Living’s 10th-anniversary “Our Towns” series, we turn our attention to Sapphire. It’s the next stop in our exploration of the six distinctive communities that make up the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, each offering a unique personality, pace, and sense of place.

Set between Cashiers and Lake Toxaway and surrounded by the Great Smoky Mountains, this jewel in Transylvania County unfolds at a gentler tempo. It’s a tempo that’s defined by reflective lakes, cascading falls, gently winding mountain roads, and neighborhoods that feel consciously embedded in the landscape rather than imposed upon it.
Sapphire reveals itself slowly, rewarding those who value privacy, space, and the luxury of living well without spectacle. It appeals to those who appreciate proximity without density, nature without ruggedness, and community without noise.
IF CASHIERS IS THE CROSSROADS OF THE PLATEAU, SAPPHIRE IS ITS QUIET EXHALE.
From generations of families who reside here to those discovering it for the first time, Sapphire is where childhood summers turn into lasting memories, where neighbors become lifelong friends…and where that second home often becomes something far more permanent.

CHINQUAPIN CLUBHOUSE

LIFE REFLECTED IN WATER AND STONE
Sapphire’s story is inseparable from its setting. Nestled within the southern reaches of Jackson County, the area has long been shaped by water, forests, and geology. In the 1800s, prospectors found blue corundum crystals that resembled sapphires in local streams. Mining in the area boomed, and the valley revealed an unexpected abundance of emeralds, rubies, garnets, and — most notably — the sapphires that would ultimately give the area its name.
Unlike some mountain towns that grew around commerce or industry, Sapphire evolved as a residential retreat for America’s elite society — a place designed for immersion in nature. Indeed, Sapphire Valley was dubbed “America’s Switzerland” due to its dramatic mountain peaks, verdant valleys, and pristine mountain lakes.
In the 20th century, thoughtful development introduced amenities and estates that complemented (rather than competed with) the land itself. The result is a resort community that feels cohesive and deeply respectful of its surroundings.
Water is Sapphire’s quiet constant. At more than 55 acres, Fairfield Lake anchors the area with mirrorlike calm, while Whisper Lake and numerous smaller bodies of water are tucked discreetly throughout neighborhoods. For residents, mornings paddling kayaks, afternoons spent on the dock, and evenings admiring the sky and tree line are part of the everyday.
WHISPERS
BETWEEN THE PINES
Sapphire doesn’t have a Main Street or a bustling village square, and that’s precisely part of its appeal. Here, small clusters of homes, leisure amenities, and resorts punctuate the valley, with private enclaves and the occasional bar or café tucked into leafy corners.
Boutique shopping and dining are part of the landscape rather than its focus. Stores and artisan shops offer locally made homewares, refined mountain apparel, and gifts.
Sapphire’s dining scene mirrors its character: unfussy yet refined, welcoming without being ordinary. The focus here is on elevated comfort — places where seasonal ingredients shine, where mountain flavors meet global influence, and where the setting is as important as what’s on the plate.

You’ll find cozy dining rooms within boutique lodges, casual gathering spots perfect for families and friends, and relaxed watering holes where conversation flows as easily as locally crafted brews. Think fireplaces in cooler months and openair seating when the weather allows.
EXPERIENCE FOUR-SEASON LIVING IN NATURE
Nature is not something you visit in Sapphire, it’s something you live within. Every home, trail, and lakeside path is intertwined with the landscape, offering a daily invitation to wander and reconnect. At the heart of this experience is the Sapphire Valley Master Association, guardian of an exceptional collection of outdoor and recreational amenities designed for every season.
Residents enjoy the freedom to swim, sail, or kayak on Fairfield Lake, take laps in indoor or outdoor pools, or challenge themselves on tennis and pickleball courts. A nine-hole golf course winds through forested terrain while zip lines and walking trails invite adventure and exploration. In winter, the ski area transforms the valley into a family playground, creating seasonal rhythms that blend seamlessly with everyday life.
FLY FISHING. PHOTO BY KEVIN MEECHAN
Waterfalls, too, are a recurring reward, revealing themselves via trail paths or scenic drives. Hardwood forests feel vast and restorative, offering space for both reflection and adventure. Sapphire truly offers nature at every scale, be it grand or intimate. It is this magical harmony of nature and planning that sets the area apart: amenities enhance the landscape, giving residents the choice to move, play, or simply just be, all without ever leaving home.

CLUBS OF DISTINCTION
Sapphire is home to some of the Plateau’s most distinguished private clubs. Located in the western part of the valley, The Country Club of Sapphire Valley offers golf, tennis, dining, and a strong sense of camaraderie, all framed by sweeping mountain views. Meanwhile, toward the eastern side, Burlingame Country Club brings a refined, classic approach to club living, with championship golf, smart facilities, and a longstanding tradition of excellence.

Beyond the clubs, Sapphire’s neighborhoods reflect a diversity of lifestyles. From private gated communities to equestrian estates, the area offers space and seclusion alongside striking design. Chinquapin stands out as a naturefocused community with its own trails, fishing spots, and outdoor amenities that merge into the surrounding forest.
Each enclave feels distinct, yet all share a common respect for the land and a commitment to preserving the beauty that defines the Plateau.
A PLACE TO BELONG
What ultimately sets Sapphire apart is its balance of privacy without isolation, amenities without excess, and beauty without ostentation. Cashiers, Lake Toxaway, and the wider Plateau are close at hand, yet Sapphire itself remains calm, residential, and deeply connected to nature.
It is a place where homes are cherished across generations, and — ultimately — where ownership feels personal rather than transactional.

Sapphire does not try to be everything to everyone. Instead, it excels at being exactly what it is meant to be: a place of clear air and calm waters, understated elegance, and intentional living. A place where life slows just enough to be fully lived.
FOR THOSE WHO FIND THEIR WAY HERE, SAPPHIRE IS RARELY JUST A DESTINATION. MORE OFTEN, IT BECOMES HOME.

MURANO GLASS
Across a mist-veiled lagoon, beyond the splendid silhouette of Venice, lies Murano, an island synonymous with dreams cast in glass — fragile sculptures born from relentless flame. Murano embodies paradox: It’s an intimate community perched delicately on water, lacking the raw materials for its famed craft, yet celebrated universally as the epicenter of exquisite glassmaking.

Each luminescent vase, delicate chandelier, or meticulously fashioned bead is a testament to the island’s defiance of natural limitations. Murano transforms scarcity into unparalleled luxury and fire into crystalline elegance.
FULVIO BIANCONI INSTALLATION AT VENINI.

Murano’s tale is profoundly human and inseparable from the family dynasties that for centuries have breathed life into molten glass. Chief among them, the Barovier and Seguso families have preserved secrets passed down through generations, safeguarding an artistry that transcends mere ornamentation. It encapsulates heritage, creativity, and a masterful negotiation between opposing elements.
FROM REFUGE TO RENAISSANCE
Murano’s remarkable journey begins with exile and refuge. In 452 C.E., fleeing Attila the Hun’s wrath, settlers from Altino sought sanctuary in the Venetian lagoon’s marshes. Out of necessity grew opportunity. By the eighth century, Venice had emerged as a nexus of trade, absorbing influences from Byzantium and the East. Glassmaking, a tradition far older than the lagoon city, found fertile ground here.
By 1291, the Venetian Republic had recognized the peril inherent in the glowing furnaces of its artisans. To prevent catastrophic fires in Venice, the doge decreed that all glass furnaces be relocated to Murano. A secondary benefit swiftly emerged, as the isolation nurtured a culture of secrecy and intense craftsmanship. Artisans were virtually imprisoned within luxury and thus began Murano’s legendary ascent into rarefied circles of prestige and refinement.
glass heritage. Originating from Treviso, the Baroviers settled in Murano just as the Republic mandated the isolation of glass furnaces, ensuring the family’s destiny as masters of the craft. Angelo Barovier, who was revered equally as an artist and a scientist, united centuries of accumulated family wisdom and produced pieces still treasured today in leading museums.
Among the first to define Murano’s golden age was the Barovier family. In the 15th century, Angelo Barovier propelled the family into legend. His invention of cristallo, a clear, colorless glass unmatched in its purity, revolutionized glassmaking. Prior to this, European glass was cloudy and impure. Cristallo was clarity incarnate, and light passed through it as if through air. It became the preferred medium of mirrors, chalices, and the elite.

Barovier’s Coppa Nuziale or Wedding Cup, crafted around 1450, embodied this purity. A communal vessel adorned with painted portraits and gentle hues, it was as much a celebration of love as of Murano’s newfound mastery. The cup became symbolic of Venice’s transformation from a merchant republic to a cultural beacon.
THE HOUSE OF BAROVIER: INVENTION AS IDENTITY
Founded in 1295, Barovier & Toso is one of the oldest family businesses in the world and stands today as the embodiment of Murano’s illustrious
Cristallo transformed Murano glass from an artisanal product into cultural currency. The 20th century saw the visionary leadership of Ercole Barovier, whose innovative designs elevated glassmaking to extraordinary heights of artistic achievement. Barovier, initially trained in medicine, brought a fresh and daring eye to the family’s ancient craft. His iconic Primavera series — distinguished by its milky-white, cracked glaze — was born serendipitously and has eluded replication. Pieces from this series now fetch extraordinary sums at auction, underscoring the lasting allure of Barovier’s aesthetic genius.
Barovier’s talent was technical and emotional. He understood that luxury isn’t abundance, but mystery. In 1940, he introduced the Lenti vases — pieces that played with optics. Thick glass lenses bulged across the surface, magnifying gold leaf and the colored layer beneath. The effect was hypnotic: Golden fragments appeared to drift within the vase, as though caught in suspension. The exterior was cool and sleek, and the interior was molten with suggestion. It was fire seen through ice. Every piece whispered of something unseen: the hand of the artist, the heat of the fire, and the silence of restraint. Such alchemy — transforming silica, heat, and passion into objects of astonishing clarity — sealed the Baroviers’ reputation. Each of their creations embodied the tension between the

furnace’s infernal heat and the delicate fragility of the resulting glass, capturing the very soul of Murano’s paradoxical artistry.
Barovier & Toso’s creations today remain monumental — chandeliers like floating constellations and bespoke commissions for royal palaces and contemporary hotels. Yet their essence remains unchanged: mastery, restraint, and an unwavering pursuit of the sublime.
THE POETICS OF GLASS: THE SEGUSO FAMILY
If the Baroviers represent invention, the Segusos are Murano’s steady heart. Their lineage stretches unbroken to 1397 — 22 generations of fire-tenders, all sworn to the same artistic covenant.
BOHEMIAN GLASS: THE GREAT MASTERS INSTALLATION.
For more than six centuries, since Filius Seguso first tended the family furnace in 1397, the Segusos have woven their artistic lineage deeply into Murano’s soul. Documented in the Libro d’Oro (Golden Book) of Murano since 1605, they epitomize nobility and prestige. At the height of their influence, Seguso creations traveled far beyond Venice, gracing the homes and palaces of royals, popes, and the elite from Europe to the Americas.
The family’s renaissance began in the 19th century with Antonio Seguso, who resurrected forgotten techniques and steered Murano through the Industrial Age. His son, Giovanni, an eccentric genius, passed his flame to the legendary Paolo Venini and left an indelible mark on modern glass.
Seguso Vetri d’Arte, founded in 1933, became the crucible of midcentury design. In the 1950s, under designer Flavio Poli, Seguso introduced the sommerso technique: a core of colored glass submerged within clear crystal, as though a jewel was trapped inside ice. These vases glowed from within — amber hearts, cobalt veins, ruby shadows — encased in soft transparency.
The Vaso Blu Rubino, created in 1954, was the apex of this technique. Its deep ruby red, layered beneath sapphire blue, shimmered with regal intensity. Awarded the Compasso d’Oro, the Vaso Blu Rubino placed Seguso firmly at the forefront of Italian design.
Seguso’s genius has always been multidimensional. Giampaolo Seguso, the poetic soul of the family, engraved verses into glass, merging sculpture and language. His sons, Gianluca, Pierpaolo, and Gianandrea, have expanded the legacy into lighting, interiors, and bespoke installations. They have crafted tailor-made projects for Dior, Fendi, Armani, and Blumarine boutiques around the world.
From Venice to New York, from the Vatican to the Wynn, Seguso glass speaks in quiet, elegant volumes. It does not shout; it glows.
MURANO’S CONTEMPORARY CRUCIBLE
Today, Murano stands at the edge of change. The furnaces still burn, but the challenges are existential. Rising gas prices, shrinking artisanal talent, and an onslaught of counterfeits threaten the very DNA of this island’s identity. What was once safeguarded by geography now faces the effects of globalization.
Yet, within these trials lies Murano’s truest strength, which is its refusal to compromise. The island’s artisans chase perfection, not trends or scalability. Every object remains a singular act of devotion: hot breath in glass, cooled into shape, and held against time.
As collectors, designers, and connoisseurs return to the values of authenticity, provenance, and human touch, Murano glass once again rises — not as a trend, but as a testament.

AN IRREPLACEABLE LEGACY
Murano glass is not just a luxury good. It is a living archive: a distillation of history, heat, and human touch. Every piece, whether a chandelier in a Saudi palace or a sculptural vase in a Manhattan penthouse, is an object of time made and witnessed.
The Baroviers and Segusos are custodians of a language spoken in flame. Their work expresses something larger than aesthetic beauty. It articulates a philosophy of permanence in an impermanent world. To hold a piece of Murano glass is to maintain the tension of opposites: fire and ice, control and chaos, fragility and strength.
As the furnaces glow against the Venetian dusk, the question is no longer whether Murano will survive, because it always has. The question is whether we still know how to treasure the irreplaceable. We must recognize that true luxury is not the object itself, but the lineage, the labor, and the miracle of its becoming.
Murano’s legacy endures in its objects and its ethos. Suspended between elemental extremes, it offers a profound lesson for our time: What is fragile is often what lasts longest, and what is born of fire can, somehow, endure like ice.

SHERWOOD FOREST’S SURPRISING CADDIES

SOMETHING CHARMINGLY UNEXPECTED IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW AT SHERWOOD FOREST GOLF CLUB IN BREVARD.
While golfers at other courses are settling for traditional caddies, players here are being paired with four-legged, furcovered companions that sport soulful brown eyes and can carry two full golf bags without breaking a sweat.

words by robert mceveety
photography by ashley lee

These are Mark English’s incredible llama caddies, and they’ve transformed Sherwood Forest’s rustic par-3 course into one of the region’s most talkedabout golf experiences.
Grazing peacefully while golfers line up shots before dutifully lugging their burdens to the next hole, these magnificent Peruvian herd animals don’t fail to enchant. But caddying is just the beginning of their remarkable story — and Mark English’s.
A CHILDHOOD DREAM REALIZED
Mark traces his unusual career path all the way back to a sweltering day in fifth grade. While working as a golf course caddy, he figured out he could double his earnings by carrying two golf bags instead of one. “I got halfway through that first round,” he recalls, “and suddenly it was all hills. I made it to the end, but I wasn’t a happy kid. That was the day I said, ‘I’m going to train llamas to carry those heavy clubs.’”
His mother believes Mark’s early, llama-centric ambitions had their genesis in the Dr. Seuss books he was obsessed with as a child. But whatever sparked it, Mark followed through, spending years researching the animals, attending fairs and farms, and reading everything he could find about the sturdy South American creatures.

Arming himself with a Penn State degree in turf grass management and extensive experience as a golf course superintendent, he finally acquired his first five llamas in 2007 and began training them for caddy duty.
Mark remembers the reaction he received when he approached Sherwood Forest’s board of directors with a proposal. “They all laughed at me,” he says. “Then they said I could do it.” The board believed in Mark, even if the idea caught them off guard. And their faith was rewarded when the llamas captured immediate online attention. “We blew up right away on the internet,” Mark recalls. “That was in ‘07. But 2009 was when things really took off.”

THE LLAMA CADDY EXPERIENCE
The llama caddy program exceeded all expectations. Golfers started calling daily from across the country, eager to experience something truly unique. Each golfer gets paired with an individual llama, complete with its own personal backstory and distinctive personality. Trained by Mark, the naturally docile llamas prove remarkably well-suited to golf course life. They graze quietly while players take their shots, they’re happy to be led around the green, and, incredibly, they’re potty-trained.
“We go before we tee off, then after nine holes, then again at the end,” he explains. “They don’t go on the course.”
For golfers of all ages and skill levels, the llama caddies at Sherwood Forest are breathing new life into the game. But Mark English’s animals aren’t just gracing the groomed greens of country clubs; they’re also returning to their Andes mountain roots, accompanying local mountaineers on some of the Plateau’s most incredible hikes.
WILDERNESS ANIMALS
Since 2019, Mark has led over 1,000 such hikers annually through some of the region’s most spectacular terrain. Operating from Earth Shine Lodge, his permits for the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests plus DuPont State Recreational Forest provide access to vast wilderness areas.
The hiking program operates most Fridays through Sundays, offering visitors a chance to explore the Southeast’s most pristine landscapes, unburdened by packs or gear while being accompanied by some of its most charming citizens. This is, after all, where the llama truly shines, the very reason it was first domesticated. The animals are natural hiking companions, imperturbable, unexcitable, and naturally smart-footed.

Even when hiking through designated bear sanctuary territory, the llamas maintain their natural cool. “They fly toward each other,” says Mark. “They form a big wall, and the bear goes the other way.”
PACK LEADERS
Mark English’s llamas have also become fixtures throughout the region’s charitable and community activities. Lightning, one of his original animals, has participated in 45 weddings, either as a ring bearer or reception entertainer for the kids.
The animals participate in Christmas parades with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Plateau and visit nursing homes, colleges, and day-care centers throughout the region. The annual Llama Rama golf tournament, which ran for 10 years, raised over $240,000 for domestic abuse awareness and prevention. As mascots for Carolina Pediatrics, the llamas regularly visit hospitals. During COVID-19, when Mark couldn’t accompany them, they were brought inside to see young patients on their own, providing an incredibly heartwarming moment during a cold and lonely time.
Since 2011, Mark has partnered with SOAR Academy to provide wilderness therapy for children with ADHD and behavioral challenges. The program groups six to eight children, nine llamas, two counselors, and 560 pounds of gear heading into a multi-day camping expedition.
Mark runs these special trips every other week during summer — Monday through Wednesday with one group, then Wednesday through Friday with another.
“We’ve accomplished 360 nights of wilderness therapy since 2011,” he says. “I’ve never missed one.”
NO DRAMA, JUST LLAMAS
With 14 llamas currently in operation and four llama babies in training, Mark English continues expanding his unique mountain enterprise. From that frustrated fifth-grade caddie emerged a man who’s found his calling, bringing joy through his passions. His llamas carry golf clubs and hiking gear, comfort sick children, defend against bears, and somehow know exactly what troubled kids need in the wilderness.
“They’ve given me the best life ever,” Mark reflects. And we’re lucky he’s chosen to share them with us.

PASTELS, PALMS, & PICTURESQUE PARADISES

A 24-mile ribbon of sun-drenched paradise hugging the Gulf Coast, Florida’s Scenic Highway 30A is a place where Appalachian quartz sands meet emerald waters, and each stop is a carefully curated vignette of coastal charm.
From quaint beach towns to secret hideaways, a road trip along this panhandle between Destin and Panama City is part pilgrimage, part indulgence — and a chance to savor beach life at its best with a side of salty breeze.
Beaches aside, part of South Walton’s appeal is its walkable, New Urbanism design. In fact, 30A is the birthplace of the architectural movement. Almost all communities are less than 30 years old, and each neighborhood is purpose-built for strolling, lingering at cafés, and bumping into neighbors without ever feeling crowded.
Buckle up and let’s cruise along a stretch of coast where pastel houses gossip over cobblestone streets, and every pit stop will be near-impossible to leave.

INLET BEACH
If you’re driving east to west from Panama City, make Inlet Beach one of your first ports of call. There’s a faintly old-Florida soul here (sunbleached and unbothered, that is), but it’s been given a tasteful glow-up. Think polished coastal homes with an artsy streak, surf shops that know their way around good design, and public art that pops up just when you’re least expecting it. Inlet Beach doesn’t shout for attention; it hums with it — all Gulf energy, none of the fuss.
BOUTIQUE STOP:
Shop local at Painted Peacock or Small Town Shoppe for unique fashion and accessories.
LUNCH:
Fish Out of Water at WaterColor Inn offers Gulf-fresh seafood in a light, airy setting with panoramic views of the dunes.
AFTERNOON ADVENTURE:
Rent a paddleboard or kayak from the local outfitters to explore the coastal dune lakes — a rare natural feature where freshwater meets sand in secret lagoons.
ROSEMARY BEACH
As the road winds westward, Rosemary Beach is the architectural darling of 30A. Rosemary is a masterclass in cohesive design: paved pathways flanked by gas lanterns, quaint plazas, and colorful facades that make even a casual perambulation feel like a magazine spread. And a stroll is a must, given Rosemary Beach’s proliferation of boardwalks that connect you from sand to pocket park to boutique.
CAFÉ CULTURE:
Amavida Coffee Roasters is perfect for a midmorning pick-me-up; their matcha latte is almost too pretty to drink.
WELLNESS BREAK:
Book a beach yoga session through local wellness providers — sun, sand, and downward dog in paradise.
INSIDER TIP:
Walk out to the western pier at sunrise or sunset for a quiet moment over the Gulf. The light here is cinematic: the kind that lingers in your memory.

ALYS BEACH
The cool and contemporary counterpart of Rosemary Beach’s quaintness, Alys Beach is a vision of Barbados-inspired architecture — all white stucco buildings and arched doorways. The streets themselves are almost meditative. Cobbled paths wind through meticulously landscaped courtyards, dotted with palms, agave, and bursts of bougainvillea. It’s less “beach town” and more “design manifesto.”
Alys is not about heaving crowds; it’s about refined taste. Private villas hide behind discreet walls, beach access is subtly signposted, and even the dunes feel groomed. This is where folks come to disappear stylishly.

WHERE TO SIP:
Visit Raw & Juicy for an antioxidant-rich organic smoothie or drink cocktails at The Pearl Hotel’s Havana Beach bar while watching the horizon melt into pinks.
FIND NATURE:
Follow one of Alys’ discreet boardwalks through the dunes to the beach just after sunrise. The sand is blindingly white, the water improbably clear, and at that hour, it often feels like you’ve wandered onto a private island.
STEAL AWAY:
Peek at the secret beach access at North Barrett Square for a moment of quiet serenity away from the bustle.

WATERSOUND & WATERCOLOR
West of Alys, the road softens, and so does the mood. WaterSound and WaterColor feel less designed for display and more designed for living. These largely gated communities both have (many say) the best beaches along 30A, with vast stretches of uncrowded shoreline backed by rolling dunes.
Pull in and pull up a lounger before reclining with a chilled beverage at one of the abundant beach clubs, then take a dusk bike ride through pine forests and coastal scrub via freshwater lakes.
COCKTAIL CULTURE:
Enjoy brunch or sunset cocktails at the WaterColor Inn, where Gulf views stretch endlessly, and the atmosphere is unadulterated barefoot luxury.
ART STOP:
The South Walton Arts Center showcases rotating exhibitions from regional artists, proof that 30A’s beauty isn’t limited to the shoreline.
PHOTO MOMENT:
Walk the Western Lake boardwalk at sunset, when the water mirrors the sky and the crowds thin to near-zero. It’s cinematic without trying too hard.
SEASIDE
Ah, Seaside: the picture-perfect town that launched a thousand coastal Pinterest boards and could double as a Ralph Lauren catalog set. Pastelcolored cottages with perfectly manicured porches line the streets, while fragrant bakeries tempt passersby with the scent of warm croissants and artisanal coffee.
Seaside is idealized Americana by the sea. Yes, it’s famous. Yes, it’s busy. But it’s still charming. Little surprise, then, Seaside was a filming location for “The Truman Show.” Spend a day at the Gulf-facing Beachfront, dine on award-winning fish-to-table cuisine at Bud & Alley’s, and grab souvenirs at Ruskin Place’s boutiques and galleries.
DON’T MISS:
Visit Seaside Farmers Market (Saturdays, 9 a.m1 p.m.) for local produce, handmade goods, and gourmet bites.
LUXURY MOMENT:
Rent a beach cruiser and coast down the 30A Trail, stopping at subtle art installations that feel like hidden gems.
LITERARY PAUSE:
Duck into Sundog Books, Seaside’s beloved indie bookstore, where beach reads, thoughtful nonfiction, and the occasional signed first edition make it dangerously easy to lose track of time.

GRAYTON BEACH
If Seaside is polished, Grayton Beach is happily scuffed around the edges and proud of it. It’s a town that embodies the soul of 30A. Colorful cottages, art-filled boutiques, and the scent of the sea combine for a Bohemian-chic vibe. Grayton doesn’t try to impress … which is exactly why it does.
Nature lovers will find their bliss at Grayton Beach State Park, where trails wind through dunes and scrub forest, opening onto beaches that feel wilder and less managed than elsewhere along the coast. Leave the car behind and wander along trails lined with moss-draped oaks.
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE:
Paddleboard or kayak on Western Lake, one of South Walton’s rare coastal dune lakes, where freshwater and saltwater coexist in a quietly surreal ecosystem.
CULINARY TREAT:
Roux 30A delivers fine-dining Southern cuisine with a creative, chef-driven edge. Gulf seafood, rich sauces, and seasonal ingredients are handled with confidence rather than fuss.
HIDDEN GEM:
Just offshore from Grayton Beach, the Underwater Museum of Art is the world’s first permanent underwater sculpture garden: a surreal experience where contemporary art doubles as an artificial reef, slowly disappearing beneath schools of fish and shifting light.
DUNE ALLEN
Your 30A road trip lets out its last contented breath at Dune Allen Beach. Here, Florida’s beauty feels like it’s been turned up a notch: taller dunes, quieter sand, and a pace that makes the word “relaxation” feel almost compulsory. Sleek new beach homes cozy up to charming old bungalows, giving the community a vintage-meets-modern vibe.
Generations of vacationers are drawn equally to the natural wonders and the blissful lack of Instagram queues. Dune Allen is home to three rare coastal dune lakes: Allen Lake, Oyster Lake, and Stallworth Lake. Kayak or paddleboard across these glassy waters and you’ll find yourself in a private world of cypresses, pines, and reflective water, with not a loud selfie stick in sight.
DINING FINALE:
Try The Perfect Pig, a local gem serving gourmet Southern comfort food with a clever twist, perfect for a hearty send-off.
EXPLORE TOPSAIL HILL PRESERVE:
Hike, wander along pristine dunes, and experience Florida’s coast as it might have looked before civilization arrived.
LUXURY SUNSET SEND-OFF:
Find a quiet dune, pop a chilled bottle of rosé, and toast to the 30A lifestyle.

So, fill your tank, pack your beach tote, and let 30A guide you from sunrise to sunset, from Inlet Beach to Dune Allen, along a stretch of paradise where the dunes rise like gentle applause and the sand begs you to kick off your shoes and stay for a while.

PACK, PADDLE, & PARK: A 30A ROAD TRIP GUIDE
WHEN TO GO:
Summer is 30A’s main event (buzzing beaches and full social calendars), but don’t overlook the shoulder seasons. Winter and early spring offer quieter sands and easier reservations, with most restaurants and boutiques open year-round. Do note: June through November can be stormy.
FLY AND DRIVE:
Fly from Charlotte or Asheville to Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) in Panama City. Rental cars are essential, as 30A’s charm is best explored at your own pace.
DRIVE:
Head south through Georgia and Florida to Panama City, then cross the Hathaway Bridge onto 30A. It’s scenic, but allow extra time for stops … the Gulf Coast views demand it.
TIMING:
Early mornings or late afternoons are magical, with soft light, calm beaches, and fewer crowds. Sunrise over Seaside and sunset at Dune Allen are worth setting the alarm for.
PARKING AND GETTING AROUND:
Many towns along 30A are pedestrian-first, so street parking is limited and valet service is a rare luxury. Pack a good pair of walking shoes or rent a bike to glide between beaches, boutiques, and cafés.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Boutique inns, charming vacation rentals, or thoughtfully designed guesthouses in Seaside, Rosemary Beach, or WaterColor are perfect for a stay that’s more curated and less cookie-cutter.
DINING RESERVATIONS:
Coastal cuisine here is in demand — book ahead, especially for brunches, rooftop cocktails, or sunset dinners.
PACK ACCORDINGLY:
Pack layers, sun protection, chic but comfy shoes, and a tote for spontaneous beach discoveries. 30A rewards exploration as much as it does lounging in the sand.
