The Pedro Region of South St Elizabeth is in a Climate Crisis. The Region is situated historically in the driest, lowest rainfall precipitation zone of Jamaica. Recent trends in Global Warming have exacerbated the climate challenges in the region. These difficulties have posed risks to the livelihood of the population many of whom have disinvested from their historic generational lands by transferring their birthright to cash-rich Returning Jamaican Residents and tourism investors culminating in a slide in agricultural output that threatens national agricultural production and productivity.
For centuries South St Elizabethans have worked relentlessly, tirelessly and innovatively to establish and distinguish the Pedro Plains region with a global branding and reputation as a uniquely positioned place on Earth and the undisputed Bread Basket of Jamaica.
The Government of Jamaica has designated the Pedro Project, the largest Irrigation Infrastructure Project to be undertaken, as a National Strategic Initiative
