A new street sign in downtown Orlando now commemorates the life and legacy of State of Florida Senator Geraldine F. Thompson. The city has designated a portion of West South Street as “Senator Geraldine F Thompson Way,” a meaningful tribute placed directly in front of the Wells’Built Museum of African American History and Culture, which she founded in 2001. Thompson saved the historic Wells’Built Hotel from demolition and transformed it into a museum preserving the stories, culture, and civil rights history of Black Floridians

Senator Thompson, who passed away on February 13, 2025, at age 76, was a teacher, historian, and public servant whose work shaped Central Florida for decades Before entering public office, she taught in Orange County Public Schools and spent 24 years at Valencia College, where she founded the College Reach Out Program to expand college access for underrepresented students. A dedicated historian, she authored Black America: Orlando, Florida, documenting the experiences and contributions of Black residents

As a legislator in both the Florida House and Senate, Thompson championed civil rights, education, and cultural preservation. Her accomplishments include securing the exoneration of the Groveland Four, establishing a specialty license plate that funds scholarships for the Divine Nine, and leading efforts to designate Eatonville as the site of Florida’s first state Black history museum. Although the state ultimately selected St. Johns County, her advocacy elevated the importance of preserving Black history statewide

“Senator Geraldine F Thompson Way” stands as a lasting reminder of a woman who preserved history, expanded opportunity, and fought for justice with unwavering purpose.
