FOREWORD

What a great time to be in Agriculture, with both the beef & dairy industries being in such a positive place it seems just reward for the commitment we as farmers put not only into our business but also to feeding our communities.

I believe this is the best group of bulls we have put forward, functional bulls that will deliver results in multiple programs. Bulls with performance that have the right structure to allow them to be used over heifers or cows with confidence.

All bulls are offered in this sale, we do not keep any bulls to take through to two-year-old so this is your opportunity to access the best bulls from our program. We believe selling as yearlings offers many advantages to our clients, primarily being able to access our latest genetics as early as possible as well as the opportunity get an extra calf crop in a sires lifetime. We continue to move our calving forward with a targeted start date of 1st July giving the bulls the benefit of time for growth & maturity before going to work.

As always the bulls will be scanned prior to the sale with results & updated weights available soon after via an online supplementary sheet. We have a policy in place where all bulls are scanned in the spring as this is our only chance to capture the data on the whole contemporary group and we do all heifers in the autumn.

At this point in the development of the herd we are now reducing the number of embryo calves being produced annually as the purebred cow numbers increase. The female groups across both breeds are displaying the consistency in type and performance we are aiming for to enable consistent, market relevant sale drafts year on year. Our sire groups used are purposely kept small in number as I believe this also brings consistency to the herd, equally

is the belief that you must back your judgement on sires invested in.

It great to see opportunities developing in the commercial space for the Speckle Park breed. This breed has much to offer your business and as we see market opportunities develop I think we are at a point where producers looking to utilize the benefits of Speckle Park in their programs must take time to research who & what their bull breeder is about. It is extremely important that when looking to invest in sires, be that for use in either commercial beef or dairy beef production you buy bulls from quality programs and reputable breeders. Know what your buying, all registered purebred bulls will have been Gene tested for Myostatin, Horn & Colour genes, Performance recording provides another selection tool and level of predictability in your sire selection. So, I encourage you to ask those questions to ensure you get what you expect.

As always we are very appreciative of all who support us throughout the year, especially our on farm team.

Catherine and I look forward to seeing you at our 8th sale, a time to catch-up and share some hospitality.

Regards

Derek, Catherine, Max & Jake Hayward

SINGLE-STEP EVALUATION

What does this all mean:

A BREEDPLAN EBV, is an evaluation of an individual’s breeding ability, the traits likely to be passed on to its progeny. An EBV is not the display of raw data but an estimated breeding value.

Pre-July 2023 Speckle Park EBV’s have been made up from a starting point of mid parent or parental average, (50% Sire 40kg 400D Growth x 50% Dam 20kg 400D Growth = calf 30kg 400D Growth.)

Then if raw data is included in the evaluation, depending on how this raw data compares to his/her contemporary group this 30kg 400D Growth could move up or down, depending on a variety of factors.

Post July 2023 EBV’s will now include a third level of information, Single Step Genomics. Using SNP technology, we can understand the “mid parent or parental average” much more. Previously we thought a calf was 50% dam and 50% sire, but we all know full siblings are not exact replicas of each other, a calf’s DNA is a complex combination of dam and sire, and multiple generations prior. So now a calf will start prior to raw data being included at a genomic parental average (e.g., 75% Sire 40kg 400D Growth x 25% Dam 20kg 400D Growth= calf 35kg 400D Growth)

Which animals will see genomics included in the traits analysed?

This will be the majority of animals with a SNP on file (animals born N onwards), those older animals with only a MIP can be upgraded from sample testing. In some rare case’s some animals with a SNP on file might not receive genomics based on the quality of the sample, these animals will need a new sample.

Raw Data is as critical as it ever had been, the EBV continues to rely on raw data being submitted to continue building the reference population. As raw data is submitted, and the trait accuracies are increased, and small movements are expected from the genomically enhanced Parental EBV.

SPECKLE PARK

This allows a much greater understanding of animals potential breeding ability at weeks old, not waiting years to understand from previous methods.

WHAT IS GENOMICS?

The genome is the genetic material of an organism; that is, all of an organism’s DNA. Genomics is the study of the genome, while genomic selection refers to the inclusion of DNA information into a genetic evaluation and selection program (such as BREEDPLAN).

The DNA information (or genotypes) used for genomic selection is in the form of thousands of genetic markers, known as Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs). Genotypes containing these thousands of SNP markers are generated by analysing a DNA sample from the animal on a SNP chip. SNP chips are available in different densities; for example the SNP chip might have 20,000 SNP markers (20K), 50,000 SNP markers (50K) or 800,000 SNP markers (800K).

For Single-Step, BREEDPLAN uses either the 50 or 100 thousand SNP chip information from DNA Laboratories like Neogen or Zoetis. This means that each animal is tested approximately for either 50 or 100 thousand different DNA markers for the DNA laboratory. A very small number of these markers will be related to known traits like Leptin or Myostatin but the majority will not. The tests for individual traits like Leptin, Myosatin, horn/poll, genetic conditions etc are based on a very small number of genes (typically one). Unfortunately, the majority of traits of influenced by many genes (the term is polygenic).

The introduction of Single Step genomics will allow us to harness the depth of genomic information available to find gene correlations, providing significantly enhanced predictive power over current EBVs or single gene tests. Ultimately, we are able to see an increased accuracy and make selection decisions with younger animals.

THE ‘COMPLETENESS

OF PERFORMANCE’ HERD RATING SYSTEM

The “Completeness of Performance” Herd Rating System

The “Completeness of Performance” herd rating system assesses the quantity of pedigree and performance information that has been submitted to BREEDPLAN by an individual seedstock herd.

The “Completeness of Performance” herd rating system assesses the quantity of pedigree and performance information that has been submitted to BREEDPLAN by an individual seedstock herd.

While ultimately EBV accuracy values provide an indication of the reliability an animal’s EBVs, one of the key factors underpinning the accuracy of EBVs is the quantity of performance information that has been recorded with BREEDPLAN.

The “Completeness of Performance” star rating provides both seedstock and commercial producers with an assessment of how much performance has been submitted to BREEDPLAN by a herd.

The star rating for a herd is calculated based on the proportion of calves within the herd born in a fixed 5 year period that have performance recorded for each trait. Different criteria are used within each individual breed depending on the traits for which EBVs are calculated within the breed.

Following is a description of each star rating:

Following is a description of each star rating:

5

4 or 4.5

3 or 3.5

2.5 or less

Herds with a star rating of “5” are gold standard. They are considered to be recording “complete” performance information with BREEDPLAN for all animals across all traits for which EBVs are available.

Herds with a star rating of “4” or “4.5” are silver standard. They are considered to be recording comprehensive performance information with BREEDPLAN for most animals and traits, but are recording less performance than a 5 star herd.

Herds with a star rating of “3” or “3.5” are considered bronze standard. They are considered to be recording performance information with BREEDPLAN for a reasonable number of traits or animals, but are recording less performance information than a 4 or 5 star herd.

Herds with a rating of “2.5” or less are recording information with BREEDPLAN but not for all animals or traits. They are recording less performance information than a 3, 4 or 5 star herd.

UNDERSTANDING GENE TEST

The presence of two copies of the Red Gene will result in a Red coat colour. The results you will see for this gene are:

ED

ED / e Dominant Black / Recessive Red

ED / E+ Dominant Black / Wildtype

E+ / e Wildtype / Recessive Red

E+ / E+ Homozygous Wildtype

e / e Homozygous Recessive Red

The presence of two copies of the Myostatin nt821 gene result in double muscling of an animal and cause health issues. The results you will see for this gene are:

nt821F FREE NO COPIES OF MYOSTATIN GENE

nt821C CARRIER One copy of Myostatin gene

nt821A Affected Two copies of Myostatin gene

The Polled gene is dominant to the recessive Horn gene. The presence of two copies of the horn gene (HH) will result in a horned animal. The results you will see for this gene are:

PcPc

PcPf

PfPf (PP)

*Predominately Polled (occasional scurs)

HPc

HPf (HP)

*Could be scurred

HH Homozygous Horns (HH)

*Horned

NR

Due failed test OR due to unresolved haplotype (combination of HornPoll markers fail to produce a valid result)

*Only HPc animals will show scurs and, this is more common in males than females. Not all HPc animals will have scurs.

LEPTIN

Leptin is a hormone that regulates feed intake, energy expenditure and whole-body energy balance. A SNP in the Leptin gene has been associated with several economically important traits including milk production, weaning weight, back fat, marbling, quality grade, yield grade, dry matter intake, and days on feed.

Leptin is reported as TT, CT, CC. Associated with fatmetabolism and fat deposition, leaner cattle carry the ‘C’ allele while more marbled cattle carry the ‘T’ allele.

THERE ARE 3 LEPTIN VARIANTS:

• CC (lean) animals have less fat and therefore, are less economically favourable

• CT animals are economically intermediate

• TT (fat) animals have more fat and therefore, are more economically favourable

Using Speckle Park International Selection Indexes

Selection indexes assist beef producers to make selection decisions that take into account the relevant growth, carcase, fertility and efficiency attributes of each animal to identify candidates whose progeny will be the most profitable for a particular commercial enterprise. Selection indexes provide an overall indication of an animal’s genetic value for profit in a specific production system/target market and are calculated based on weightings placed on individual traits that are deemed to be important for that production system.

The weightings are calculated using BreedObject software that analyses all sources of costs and income for the production system represented by each selection index. As such, selection indexes account for both sides of the profit equation and reflect the short and long term profit possible through selection of superior genetics. For example, short term profit can be generated by a bull through the sale of his progeny, and the longer term profit generated by his daughters in a self-replacing cow herd.

Best Practice Guide to Animal Selection Using Speckle Park International Selection Indexes

Incorporating selection index information into breeding decisions takes the hard work out of trying to decide how much emphasis you need to put on individual EBVs when determining which animals you want to retain in your herd or purchase. The recommended strategy for selecting animals is to complete the following steps:

1. Identify the selection index of most relevance to your or your client’s breeding objectives. This decision should be aided by the index descriptions at the end of this document and the following flowchart.

2. Rank animals on the chosen selection index. This can be done via the web search facility available for the breed.

3. Consider the individual BREEDPLAN EBVs of importance. All breed level selection indexes are designed for the average of the production system specified in their description. This means that individual farm environments and management choices may require that their own thresholds are applied. For example, if looking for a bull to use over heifers, particular attention should be paid to Calving Ease and Birth Weight EBVs.

4. Consider other traits of importance. Structure, fertility (e.g. BULLCHECKTM), temperament, genetic conditions and pedigree are all important additional considerations.

Further information is available in the A BREEDPLAN Guide to Animal Selection tip sheet that can be found in the Help Centre on the BREEDPLAN website.

Available Speckle Park International Selection Indexes

Speckle Park International currently reports four different selection indexes. These are the:

• Domestic Maternal Index (DM)

• Domestic Terminal Index (DT)

• Export Maternal Index (EM)

• Export Terminal Index (ET)

Each selection index is reported in units of net profitability per cow mated ($), and targets the following specifications:

Domestic Maternal Index (DM)

• Commercial herd targeting the supermarket trade

• Selected heifers are retained so maternal traits are important.

• Steers target 475 kg live weight (260 kg HSCW & 12 mm P8 fat depth), while heifers target 450 kg (240 kg HSCW & 14 mm P8 fat depth), at 15 months of age.

Domestic Terminal Index (DT)

• Commercial herd targeting the supermarket trade.

• All progeny slaughtered at 18 months of age.

• Progeny target 450 kg live weight (290 kg HSCW & 10 mm P8 fat depth).

• Carcase quality is of importance.

Export Maternal Index (EM)

• Commercial herd targeting the export trade.

• Selected heifers are retained so maternal traits are important.

• Steers target 680 kg live weight (375 kg HSCW & 9 mm P8 fat depth) at 24 months of age.

• Carcase quality is of importance.

Export Terminal Index (ET)

• Commercial herd targeting the export trade.

• All progeny marketed at 24 months of age.

• Progeny target 550 kg live weight (300 kg HSCW & 11 mm P8 fat depth).

• Carcase quality is of importance.

More detail on the trait and EBV emphasis for each of the selection indexes described above is available in the Speckle Park International Selection Indexes: Technical Specifications tip sheet that can be found in the Help Centre on the BREEDPLAN website.

If you have any further queries regarding the Speckle Park International Selection Indexes, please do not hesitate to contact staff at your BREEDPLAN processing centre.

We’re here for the good of the country.

MURRAY GREY

It was always our intention to add Murray Greys to our program & we always knew what that foundation would look like...females from the Oakview herd, a herd of consistency, powerful yet maternal brood cows, a herd admired by cattleman from around the world.

In 2020 we purchased the complete line of 2018 born Oakview females and the had this further complimented with a select group of cows to ensure we had access to all the high performing cow families in the Oakview herd. As numbers have increased, we continue to build the quality of our herd by adding increased selection pressure.

An important part of our program is to broaden the genetic base of herd and where possible introduce new genetics to better service both stud & commercial producers. The opportunity to secure NZ semen rights in Venturon Rectify is exciting, he is making a great contribution to our program.

As we continue to grow and develop the herd we will be adopting our philosophy around the importance and value we see in our females to ensure quality is improved with every generation and that good bulls are simply a byproduct of an outstanding cow herd.

MURRAY GREY

MURRAY GREY EBV’S EXPLAINED

What does this all mean:

BREEDPLAN EBVs and selection indexes remove the effects of nongenetic factors (e.g. feeding regimes, animal age) from what is seen and measured to provide the best measure of an animal’s genetic merit.

BREEDPLAN information should always be used in conjunction with other selection criteria, including visual assessment.

A BEST PRACTICE GUIDE TO SELECTING YOUR NEXT NEW ZEALAND MURRAY GREY SIRE

A BREEDPLAN Guide to Interpreting EBVs helps producers understand how to assess and compare the genetic merit of animals. Each EBV is reported in the units in which the measurements are taken (e.g. Weight EBVs are reported in kilograms). Please note that only EBVs produced in the same BREEDPLAN analysis can be directly compared.

When interpreting BREEDPLAN EBVs, producers may:

1. Compare to the level of genetic merit within the current population.

Comparing against the current levels of genetic merit (breed average and/or percentile bands) allows you to understand where an animal ranks within the evaluated population. EBV percentile graphs can be found online for each animals and provide a visual representation of where an animal ranks for each trait.

2. Compare expected difference in progeny perfomance.

Comparing the expected difference in outcome if two (or more) different sires are used in a herd gives you an understanding of what these EBVs mean in real terms.

3. Consider EBV accuracy.

As a general rule, animals should be compared on EBVs regardless of accuracy. Most rising two year old bulls will have similar EBV accuracy levels; however, there may be some variation (particularly at multi-vendor sales) due to levels of performance recording and/or progeny if the bull was used as a yearling.

The searchable version of this catalogue can be found online at the Murray Grey NZ website: https://www.murraygreys.co.nz

NEW ZEALAND MURRAY GREY BREEDPLAN

The New Zealand Murray Grey Beef Cattle Society publishes the following BREEDPLAN EBVs:

Calving Ease Direct (%): Higher (or more positive) CEDir EBVs indicate that two year old heifers will have less difficulty when calving this sire’s progeny.

Calving Ease Daughters (%): Higher (or more positive) CEDtr EBVs indicate easier calving of this sire’s daughters at two years of age.

Gestation Length (days): Bulls with lower (or more negative) GL EBVs are expected to produce progeny with shorter gestation lengths. Such progeny are also expected to be easier calving.

Birth Weight (kg): Bulls with lower, less positive BWt EBVs are expected to produce progeny that are lighter at birth, with an associated lower risk of calving difficulty. This EBV is particularly important when selecting sires where there is an increased risk of calving difficulty (e.g. heifers, cross-breeding).

200, 400 & 600 Day Weight EBVs (kg): Bulls with larger (or more positive) Weight EBVs are expected to produce progeny that grow faster to 200, 400 & 600 days of age, respectively.

The Weight EBV of particular importance will depend on the target market e.g. vealer (200D), yearling (400 D) or heavy steer (600 D).

Mature Cow Weight (kg): Bulls with larger (or more positive) MCW EBVs are expected to produce daughters with higher mature cow weights and increased feed requirements. More moderate MCW EBVs are generally more favourable in self replacing or maternal production systems.

Milk (kg): Bulls with higher (or more positive) Milk EBVs are expected to produce daughters with more maternal ability leading to higher 200 day weights in their progeny. Selection for moderate Milk EBVs may be preferable in harsher environments as cows with higher Milk EBVs can have impaired fertility and decreased survival under such conditions.

Scrotal Size (cm): Bulls with larger (or more positive) SS EBVs indicate better semen quality and quantity. Daughters are expected to be more fertile and reach puberty at an earlier age.

Days to Calving (days): Bulls with lower (or more negative) DTC EBVs are expected to produce daughters that are more fertile and have a shorter interval from bull-in date to calving.

Carcase Weight (kg): Bulls with larger (or more positive) CWt EBVs are expected to produce progeny with heavier carcase weights.

Eye Muscle Area (sq. cm): Bulls with a higher (or more positive) EMA EBV are expected to produce progeny with better muscling.

Rib and Rump Fat EBVs (mm): Bulls with higher (or more positive) Rib & Rump Fat EBVs are expected to produce fatter progeny, relative to carcase weight. The desire for more or less fat will depend on the finishing ability of your animals.

Retail Beef Yield (%): Bulls with higher (or more positive) RBY EBVs are expected to produce progeny with higher yielding carcases.

Intramuscular Fat (%): Bulls with higher (or more positive) IMF EBVs are expected to produce progeny with more marbling and better grading scores (e.g. MSA).
