chasing our dreams ...

The easiest decision we made in the leadup to this sale was to name it, “Chase Your Dreams at Ferdon.”

When Michelle first suggested it, neither of us hesitated, because it made complete sense to us both on so many levels. We’ve been unapologetically chasing our dreams with cows throughout our entire career. And, it has gradually become just as exciting to watch others chasing their own dreams with cows they have bought at Ferdon.

This sale connects the dots for us within these conversations and is at the heart of why we love the cows and the people in this industry so much.

I’d like to credit the couple that put us on this naming path – Tony and Lois McAllister (Ngāhinapōuri). In the lead-up to our 2024 sale, when Tony was weighing up his buying options, he was clear he wanted a show cow. I told him not to buy two or three. I advised him to pick one, to go for it, and to “chase his dream”.

That day they bought Ferdon Victorious Flower at Lot 1 for $17,000. In October 2024 she won Intermediate Jersey Champion at Waikato.

This January, Flower won Reserve Senior Champion Jersey at the NZ DairyEvent. It was as exciting for us to watch their elation as it was for us to try and secure our own achievements.

And, now here we are once again looking at an offering we are deeply proud of.

ANOTHER BIG YEAR

It’s been another big year for Ferdon. At the NZ DairyEvent in January Ferdon Tbone Veneer won Grand Champion Jersey for her third successive time. We also achieved something we’d never done at the NZ DairyEvent before. Ferdon was the prefix on all three Senior Champion Cows. It helped us secure the Premier Jersey Exhibitor banner for the 15th time in 18 years. I was also pretty shocked (and honoured) to win the 2026 recipient of the NZ Dairy Event’s Outstanding Achievement and Service Award at the show.

In short, we couldn’t have had a stronger lead-in to this sale.

This year marks 60 years since I led my first calf at the Waikato Show, and we’re now enjoying watching the fifth generation of our family finding their own way and connections showing cows.

Throughout it all we’ve been pretty straight-forward about our breeding programme. We try to breed cows that are functionally correct, and what we show is the end result of that.

PICK A WINNER

This year’s sale includes 68 lots of rising yearlings and in-calf heifers. We sold a number of in-milk cows in 2024, but we’ve since had great success with sexed semen, and it made us look at our younger animals.

These are the age-groups where chasing dreams is truly defined.

There are 57 Jerseys – mainly home-bred offerings – from the heart of our best maternal lines. These pedigrees have been curated to the best of our ability, and these pedigrees took us on a journey as we chose and included them. To see the catalogue come together is always a special moment.

Among the nine Holsteins and two Ayrshires you’ll find some more imported pedigrees to mull over. One I would draw your attention to is a Lambda daughter that traces back to her maternal granddam, Knonaudale Jasmine EX96-4E 11*. The calf is pretty outstanding, and with her sire being Duckett Pfct Has it All (from S-S-I Doc Have Not 8783-ET) you have two globally famous granddams on the top and bottom of the pedigree.

We have again offered breeds outside the Jerseys because of the respect and enjoyment we have for all good cows – regardless of breed.

On a personal note, as always, I give special credit to Michelle, who has worked shoulder-to-shoulder with me on a journey that continues to be as close to her heart as it is to mine. Also, to Corey, Josh, Ash, Jerome and their families – we couldn’t (and wouldn’t want to) do it without you. We also care deeply for the extended Ferdon family who surround us.

DREAM IT, ACHIEVE IT

Not every day in farming is great, and these special events when we pause and celebrate it all with our fellow breeders are important and much needed for our industry.

I have been visiting Ferdon for near 40 years and continue to be so impressed with the never ending improvement.

I have said before to walk through the Ferdon herd is an absolute pleasure, the amazing balance of Capacity, Dairy Quality and mighty udders is really something to see.

The Ferguson family have certainly dug deep to offer the very best of their young females with daughters selling from dams classified to EX95.

Since the 75th Celebration Sale many more awards have been won at Waikato shows and the New Zealand Dairy Events. Also, cattle purchased by other enthusiasts at the previous sale have won many awards.

As has been said on many occasions if the background foundations are well set and established, it certainly makes breeding a whole lot easier. There is no mating and hoping, set the foundation, mate correctly, and the rewards will follow.

This was done when Mr Don Ferguson MNZM bought his early foundation females, as they say the rest is history which endures to this day and into the future.

The herd made up of the three main breeds graze the Ferdon pastures and produce to very high levels. No feed pads, just in shed feeding along with grass, silage and hay means the Ferdon cattle have the ability to produce with ease and without the costs of high inputs.

The expectation as per usual is that the offering will be very well presented and will include many, of high reward show potential.

You will not be disappointed .

THE DON FERGUSON MEMORIAL TROPHY

The Don Ferguson Memorial Trophy was decided upon to honour Don, who exhibited at Waikato A&P Show for an incredible 70 years. We felt it was important to recognise his dedication and lifelong contribution to the show and the dairy industry.

When deciding what the trophy should represent, we chose to repurpose an older trophy, featuring three Jersey cows. This trophy had originally been commissioned by Dad for the Pioneer Trophy for the Otorohanga Jersey Club Jubilee 50th 1927 -1977. The Pioneer Trophy was for a Team and awarded for Production. It was awarded to D T Ferguson & Co in 1977 and last awarded to Selwyn Singh in 2001. As the club is no longer active, we felt it was a fitting tribute to use it for the Don Ferguson Memorial Trophy, as it beautifully represents the Jersey cows that Dad was so passionate about.

The Don Ferguson Memorial Trophy is awarded to an All Breeds Class and represents a team of 4 cows that are select by the breed Judges.

The inaugural year was 2017, and fittingly the Jersey team won it. Since then, the Holsteins team has won it 2020, 2022, 2023, and the Jersey team has won it 2017, 2024, and 2025. 2018, 2019, 2021 have been on farm shows due to M Bolvis and Covid.

Breed Society because the calf is born eleven days or more either side of the specified calving date and the paternity is not able to be verified the seller shall refund 25% of the purchase price plus GST direct to the buyer.

5 Cows sold as not in-calf at the time of sale, shall be sold with a guarantee to breed The term breed shall constitute producing a calf, dead or alive. Should the cow fail to produce a calf by the 31 December 2025, the seller shall refund in full the purchase price direct to the buyer.

7. Where females are sold as not in calf, (including yearlings and calves), are flushed for embryo transfer, either with or without success, all guarantees to breed become null and void.

8 Where any female sold as being in-calf proves to be carrying a mummified calf, no liability will fall on the seller.

9. Any animal which is sold as in-calf but subsequently aborts the foetus after delivery is the responsibility of the buyer and no liability will fall on the seller.

10. Any claim to the auctioneers must be accompanied by a veterinary certificate.

GENERAL CONDITIONS:

DELIVERY: Each lot shall, immediately on the fall of the hammer, be at the risk of the buyer.

INSURANCE: If transit or annual insurance is required, such cover can be arranged through the auctioneers.

INSTRUCTIONS: Buyers must sign dockets before leaving the sale and leave full delivery instructions.

TRANSFERS: Sellers are responsible for the completion of transfers. No buyers shall be entitled to withhold payments for stock pending delivery by the seller of the relevant breed society transfer certificate or LIC Animal Location Transfer Certificate.
