COC celebrate bachelor’s grads

Thousands of people in the stands and the students’ section at Cougar Stadium Friday saw a first for the College of the Canyons.

The roughly 2,300-member 2026 graduating class began degree conferment with a group of new degree holders: 10 students were given their bachelor’s degrees in building design, a program for students intending to pursue an architecture master’s.

The future of COC, and the average graduate, is pivoting at a rapid clip,

Hart district discusses homelessness

Canyon, Golden Valley reported highest number of students in need

William S. Hart High School, Golden Valley High School and Canyon High School reported the highest numbers of students considered homeless in the 2025-26 school year, with inflation cited as one of the primary contributing factors. There are different ways

students are identified as homeless and it doesn’t always mean they are living on the streets, Jan Daisher, the William S. Hart Union High School District’s director of special programs and professional development, said during a recent phone interview. She has since been promoted to the district’s chief administrative officer of student services and leadership

support.

Students are considered homeless through a variety of factors, including staying at a campsite, living in a recreational vehicle or garage, or even if they may not have parents present while they are currently minors, Daisher said.

During the May 6 Hart district governing board meeting, it was stated that Hart High School had a

total of 533 students considered homeless or unhoused, making it the school site with the highest number of homeless students.

During a followup, Daisher said Golden Valley came in second with 255 and Canyon High came in third with 144 students. Out of all students

Judge denies Chiquita appeal as residents await help

Decision comes a little under a year after the district court’s original ruling in August, stalling payouts for hundreds of Val Verde, Castaic homes in the landfill’s orbit

A federal court denied Chiquita Canyon Landfill’s request to appeal orders to add millions to a relocation fund for residents near the landfill last month, on the basis that the landfill hadn’t yet been ordered to fulfill one.

The appeals court ruled that the district court had ordered both the landfill’s owners and L.A. County, which brought the original suit against the landfill in December 2024, to meet and flesh out the terms of the relocation fund, according to a May 27 court filing.

They were also required to determine whether the county is required to post bond, in the case that the landfill was wrongly ruled against.

The decision comes a little under a year after the district court’s original ruling in August last year, and in the meantime has stalled payouts for the hundreds of Val Verde and Castaic households in the landfill’s orbit dealing with a laundry list of mysterious health issues.

John Musella, a spokesperson for the landfill, did not respond to requests for comment on the ruling.

L.A. County’s lawsuit had sought an injunction — a court-ordered command to perform or refrain from performing a specific action — that included requiring the

Sheriff discusses tools used in emergency situations

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and its Sheriff’s Response Team recently hosted a live demonstration of tactical tools and improvised explosive devices at Pitchess Detention Center. The morning demonstration last week was kicked off with opening remarks by Sheriff Robert Luna, discussing what the SRT does when it is deployed.

“Typically, when we are managing a protest that may turn into something else, our sheriff’s response team is always put on standby. They’re always very close by, not in the middle of it until whoever the incident commander decides they are needed for what they do,” Luna said.

He said it can be frustrating for the LASD when one-sided stories begin circulating about an incident. Luna clarified that it’s the people who are

Deputies: Man arrested on suspicion of multiple charges

Incident on Bottletree Lane

A man was arrested on suspicion of multiple charges after Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to a domestic violence call on the 21200 block of Bottletree Lane in Newhall on Friday night, according to an official with the station.

The victim was a woman, and the suspect was a man. They are

in a dating relationship and live together, according to an email statement from Shirley Miller, spokeswoman for the station.

The victim and suspect allegedly became involved in an argument that escalated into a physical altercation. At the time of the incident, the victim was holding their 1-year-old child, Miller’s statement said.

During the altercation, the

suspect allegedly took the victim’s phone to prevent her from contacting law enforcement, according to the statement.

The victim declined medical treatment and deputies arrested the man on suspicion of felony charges of preventing a victim from reporting a crime and misdemeanor charges of domestic battery and child endangerment, the statement said.

but shake-ups in the labor market have been fomenting for several years: The college’s building design bachelor’s holders are the culmination of plans in the college’s applied technologies school that began years ago.

As the college lays new groundwork this summer for its technical education and career training programs — with a new commercial driver’s license course starting in July and the bidding process for the construction of a permanent advanced technology center scheduled to start this season — it seems that most everyone is anticipating a transformed workforce over the next few decades.

Keynote speaker Jonathan Gonzalez, an NBC4 news anchor and reporter who studied new media arts at COC, said as much in his address Friday, injecting a little advice on how to approach using a tool that’s become a specter over the white collar industry: artificial intelligence.

Gonzalez said he’d heard enough commencement speakers getting booed for mentioning AI to tread lightly.

“I ask everyone in this crowd tonight, may you enter any AI development the same way you leave it, with integrity, with ethics, and with humanity. It may become the most useful tool in all of our lives, but be curious enough to be wary of the intentions of those pushing it onto you,” Gonzalez said. “All right, sorry, that’s just what ChatGPT told me to say.”

Gonzalez added it was important for the graduates in the audience to be wary of stagnating as learners, and to use that studentesque adaptability to better navigate curveballs.

“You are not done learning,” Gonzalez said. “You are never done learning, nor should you be. Life is anything but linear. Life is an obstacle course, but it is not an impossible one, not when you’re always learning how to adapt and evolve.”

Just looking at 2026’s numbers, COC’s degree holders transferring, or going straight into the workforce (or staying there), are as well

prepared as they can be: This year’s COC graduates are competitive stock, hitting the highest GPA average in at least the past four years, at 3.35, as well as the most honors students, with 1,010 graduating with a 3.5 and above.

That includes students like 4.0 GPA holder Miguel Martinez, who told The Signal on his way to receive his degree that he’s heading into an accounting program — one of the most popular majors among COC graduates this year, with 203 in total — at California State University, Northridge. Martinez said one of his favorite moments at COC was participating in the volunteer income tax assistance program.

“I was able to make some friends along the way, which I liked,” Martinez said. “I’d say I had a good time, I like my teachers, my classes.”

Andrea Escala, transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles, said her time at COC was a vital part of her transition into working adulthood. She’s double majoring in communications and sociology to pursue social media advertising. “I think I learned the most about myself over the past two years,” Escala said. “I think it also was a good stepping stone before going to university, just taking classes one by one, really solidifying like what I want to do.”

“Our deputies do an amazing job of managing crowds, because not only do we train on the legal aspects of it, we have to train for worstcase scenario, but we’re also trained in a lot of de-escalation techniques,” Luna said. “And we have folks that are on the department that are very good at negotiating with individuals to say, ‘Hey, what is your objective today?’”

During the presentation and demonstration, media outlets had the opportunity to ask questions about how the

The sergeant showed many videos regarding protests. The videos were of people rioting in Paramount in June 2025,

Hello reader, and welcome to the month of June … or shall I say Happy Pride Month! We can also say Happy Immigrant Heritage Month, Happy National Safety Month, Happy Men's Mental Health Month, Happy PTSD Awareness Month.

However, I'm sure some of you never actually cared about those, but just wanted to say "where is *insert something making yourself feel superior* month!?"

So if that's the case, I look forward to reading your never-satisfied-with-anything-in-life letter to the editor.

For the rest of you, enjoy whatever you choose to celebrate!

It's been yet another month full of something, and I continue to wonder if we are actually winning?

I keep hearing that we're going to, but somehow we haven't won a war that didn't need to happen, we aren't winning on the price of goods, and we certainly aren't winning at the gas pump.

But hey, they showed us liberals! Well, sort of, until this election.

I keep hearing how Republicans dominated at the polls, but as the votes continue to be counted in counties with populations larger than some states, that win seems to dwindle.

Even in races with Republicans in the lead, when you add up all the Democratic votes, the Republican hardly squeaks out.

I guess we'll see what November brings!

I imagine it will bring a beautiful blue wave. And I say that after seeing everything going on (which is quite a lot).

Even with Republicans controlling every level of government across this nation, they still just seem so angry at literally everything. I can't help but wonder: Is it because they're coming to the realization that their party cannot actually govern? Is it the bitter reality of their own policies?

Is the party realizing it's a dying breed — one that has managed to quash the middle class while screaming that anything helping citizens is socialism or communism?

It's actually really interesting because according to them: Health care is socialism, education is socialism, child care is socialism, anything affordable where private interests aren't killing you at the register is socialism.

Yet somehow, if we veer anywhere away from that, it'll destroy the economy because it's socialism.

Funny, because we've been doing capitalism for a while now and somehow we're all in debt.

Our nation sits at $38 trillion in debt and growing. Not to mention the sitting president accounts for the largest contributor to that debt.

How's that working out for you?

I'm not here saying we need socialism, communism, or whatever other system you spout off without actually understanding, but maybe, I don't know, a system that actually works for everyone?

We live in a world where the rich keep getting richer, the sitting president continues to grow his wealth, while the rest of us continue to struggle.

Year after year, we've seen that wealth doesn't trickle down. Instead, it's used to buy up housing markets so you can't afford them. It's used by mega corporations to squash out the mom-and-pop shops that once made America the greatest experiment on Earth.

Pretty soon, everyone will need some type of assistance. Either because they've been replaced by artificial intelligence or because four people own 95% of the country.

It is beyond frustrating as a younger person to watch where our country is headed.

I'm first generation. My family left their countries to achieve the American Dream. They did, through hard work and determination.

Yet today, you can't afford to fill up your tank and pay rent without a dual income and roommates.

Then I hear: "Well, other places have it worse. You're lucky you don't live there. If it's so much better, why don't you move?"

Really?

Since when has being American been about stopping at what's convenient or comfortable?

We don't stop because other places are worse. If we did that, women wouldn't vote, you couldn't criticize the Idiot in Chief, you couldn't do anything you enjoy today.

Our Constitution says "in order to form a more perfect union."

We're always striving for our nation to be better. To create a system where every citizen is taken care of, where children get excellent educations, where we fund science to become the most advanced we've ever been.

We were the land of opportunity, thought, and growth, not the land of, "Well, next door is worse, so oh well."

Before you go off on "Biden this and Obama that,” your guy has been in office about two years. I'm pretty sure within the first year he was going to turn everything around?

I guess he did turn things around. We went from a growing economy and global respect to falling apart and becoming the laughing stock.

So maybe he didn't lie after all?

Let's see what November brings us. I pray it's a country that will once again return to being that shining beacon across the globe, showing what a country by the people and for the people actually looks like.

Because we deserve better than this. And frankly, so does the world.

Dems Still Backing Scandalous Platner

When Donald Trump was filmed telling “Access Hollywood’s” Billy Bush that “I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. … Grab ’em by the p–. You can do anything,” Democrats were both apoplectic and thrilled.

The apoplexy was a natural reaction to their tender sensibilities, the ones that also weren’t offended when Bill Clinton received oral sex in the Oval Office.

The thrill came from the thought that Bill’s wife Hillary would win the votes of disaffected women, the ones who were considering voting for her brutish opponent.

That didn’t work out too well.

For years afterward, Democrats kept talking about the “grab ’em” to condemn the character, or lack thereof, of their president. Even when he was out of office and Hunter Biden became the pervertdu-jour, leftists continued to pull up that old “Access Hollywood” tape.

When Pete Hegseth was revealed to have a giant tattoo of a cross on his chest, critics immediately accused him of having a Nazi symbol on his body. Hegseth demurred, insisting that it was a Jerusalem Cross employed during the crusades soldiers often used as a symbol of the warrior tradition.

Which now brings me to Graham Platner, Democratic candidate for Senate in Maine. He has some shaky history with women. He has been known to frequent a website that traffics in pornography.

He has also been caught sexting with women not otherwise known as his wife. When confronted with these facts, he forced his wife to film a hostage video wherein she talked about his therapist, her therapist, and their therapist: three different people.

She mentioned that marriage is hard.

How Many More Lives?

She talked about her infertility, and suggested the reason her husband was dipping his virtual quill into other inkpots was because he was frustrated that “they” couldn’t get pregnant. All in all, a perfect example of the “blink twice for help” video commonly used by Al Qaeda.

How did most Democrats respond to this?

You might think, given how angry they were about Trump, that they roundly condemned the cad.

Nope. They went all French on us and told us that Americans were prudes, and that we should just mind our own business abut what went on between a husband, his wife, and lots of women online.

Also — and this is particularly rich — they reasoned that Susan Collins was the woman who put Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court, allowing a rapist to wear the robes, so they couldn’t vote for her.

Susan never sexted with anyone, nor posted naked photos on a porn site, but she’s the misogynist, not the guy.

And before this revelation, we all found out for 18 years Platner’s closest companion had been an actual Nazi tattoo. It was only when this became public knowledge that he had it removed, or covered up, or replaced with a tattoo of Pete Hegseth.

And unlike Hegseth, he never denied that it was, in fact, a Nazi tattoo.

In a move that insulted every veteran who ever suffered from PTSD, Platner stated that all of his

How many more children must lose their lives before meaningful action is taken to address gun violence in America? All over the country, families, students and communities are the ones who see the deadly consequences of shootings at schools and other gun tragedies, which affect them the most. We all know that owning a gun is a constitutional right of Americans, but at the same time, I am of the opinion that it is quite necessary to have stricter gun control laws as they can help in lowering gun violence, saving people's lives, as well as making our communities safer. One big issue is that the loopholes in existing gun laws allow certain people to get guns without being properly checked. Background checks aim at stopping potential criminals from buying guns through legal channels, but there are still loopholes. According to Everytown Research, "Twenty-two percent of gun owners got their latest gun without a background check." The point is that almost 25% of gun purchases happen outside the system that is meant for ensuring public safety. A universal background check system would be a step forward in sealing these loopholes and making it more challenging for criminals and others at high risk to get firearms.

A large number of children are affected physically and psychologically by gun violence each year. Anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder are frequent outcomes for the survivors of school shootings. The presence of active shooter drills normalizes gun violence in schools and pushes children to think of scenarios that won't happen in a school setting. Students should be able to focus on their

bad acts were due to the results of having served in combat.

John McCain never got a Nazi tattoo. PTSD doesn’t make you into a horrible person if you already didn’t have those tendencies to begin with.

And how did Democrats deal with this other revelation about their dear Graham?

They went on the offensive, and said it wasn’t all that bad, and we on the right were horrible to take advantage of a man who had bad judgment in his youth.

The Democrats who are actually defending Platner after all of the things that have emerged about his character say they only care about what he could do for them. In other words, “it’s the economy, stupid.”

Oh, and they despise Trump, so they want a guy who won’t vote with him.

Except they forget to mention that Susan Collins, along with Lisa Murkowski, is one of the Republicans least liked by Trump exactly because she often goes off the GOP reservation.

She is one of the more moderate and independent Republicans in Congress.

But that’s irrelevant to the 2026 version of Democrats.

They are not voting for Platner, they are voting against Trump.

And because they are willing to do anything to undermine a president that they view as evil and dangerous, they have engaged in a Faustian Pact with a man who thinks that he can get away with Nazi tattoos and humiliating his wife.

And guess what? The Democrats have told him he’s absolutely right.

studies and not be afraid of gun violence.

Some individuals claim that if gun laws become more restrictive, then the rights laid out in the Second Amendment will be compromised and those owning guns legally will end up being penalized. Maintaining the rights enshrined in the Constitution is a very legitimate concern. Introducing robust gun control laws is not about taking away people's right to guns but instead about setting up the right kind of regulations that should include, for instance, background checks for everybody and better safety features. A lot of gun owners actually welcome the idea of preventing guns from falling into the hands of the wrong people. The real dilemma with tighter gun laws isn't about taking away anyone's rights but rather about saving lives on one side and continued responsible gun ownership on the other.

Gun violence is a matter of public safety that touches all communities in different ways. I call on both legislators and the general public to back laws that enhance background checks and eliminate loopholes that allow crime by firearms. With these changes, we can reduce the risk of similar tragedies and have safer schools and neighborhoods for all.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter.

and live performance to help young learners build socialemotional skills, self-awareness and resilience. Through engaging scenes and hands-on participation, students explored ways to manage emotions, navigate challenges and support one another, the release said.

Local leaders in attendance included Newhall School District Superintendent Leticia Hernandez, school board member Suzan Solomon,

and representatives from the offices of Rep. George Whitesides, D-Agua Dulce, state Sen. Suzette Martinez Valladares, R-Acton, and Assemblywoman Pilar Schiavo, D-Chatsworth.

Kaiser Permanente provides programs like Empathy Quest at no cost to schools across Southern California to help expand access to tools that support students’ mental and emotional health, the release said.

Repair your gut slowly with whole foods

Dear Doctors , I had to take antibiotics recently, and I want to help my gut microbiome recover. My doctor said instead of taking probiotics, I should eat a lot of high-fiber foods. I was surprised when she said using herbs and spices can also help gut diversity. I would like to know more about this.

Dear Reader, Antibiotics are often an effective treatment for clearing up a bacterial infection. Unfortunately, because they are broad-spectrum medications, they can kill or inhibit the trillions of beneficial bacteria that make their homes in our gut. Research shows that, depending on the specific drugs used and the length of treatment, the gut flora can be disrupted for a few weeks to several months after treatment.

Not surprisingly, as awareness of the importance of the gut microbiome has grown, patients taking antibiotics are actively seeking approaches to speed the healing process. Taking probiotics can seem like a good idea, but research has shown that they can actually delay recovery.

The gut microbiome is a complex ecosystem. When antibiotics significantly reduce the diversity there, introducing a small number of probiotic strains can disrupt the natural balance within the gut, particularly when those organisms are not native to an individual’s own microbiome. The end result is a disruption of the natural recovery process.

Your doctor is recommending that you repair your gut the old-fashioned way. That is, by providing it with the nutrients microbes need to recover their numbers. High-fiber foods that sail through the stomach and small intestine largely unscathed reach the large intestine intact. There, through the act of fermentation, the mighty microbes of the gut turn them into food for themselves, as well as a variety of short-chain fatty acids and other biologically active compounds that support gut and overall health.

That brings us to the foods

Cancer

themselves. In addition to leafy greens, vegetables, fruit, grains, beans and legumes, which fall into the high-fiber category, it’s a good idea to include fermented foods in a gut-recovery diet. These foods — such as yogurt, kefir, tofu, pickles, tempeh and kimchi — contain a range of beneficial live cultures. Research also shows that herbs and spices can give a meaningful boost to the gut. These flavor enhancers, such as garlic, cinnamon, turmeric and oregano, turn out to be rich in polyphenols, a category of organic compounds that act as antioxidants. Polyphenols in a post-antibiotic diet have been shown to selectively feed beneficial microbes, discourage the growth of harmful ones and support the overall conditions the microbiome needs as it rebuilds and repairs.

We hope you will consider the food-based recovery route your doctor has prescribed. Probiotic supplements, while easy to use, contain high numbers of a limited range of microbes. Plant-based and fermented foods, by contrast, introduce microbes and microbial fuel at a gradual and measured pace. This gives existing gut bacteria the time and room to recover and helps avoid disrupting the natural process of recolonization.

Tinnitus may be connected to TMD

Dear Doctors, The left side of my jaw used to click when I chewed. It was odd, but it didn’t bother me. Then one day last year, I couldn’t fully open my mouth. I got diagnosed with TMJ and got treatment. It fixed my jaw, but now I have

tinnitus in my left ear. Is this connected? How can I know?

Dear Reader, Let’s begin with your jaw, which is where the sequence of events you described began. The temporomandibular joint, commonly called TMJ, connects the jaw to the skull. This joint, which is found on either side of the jaw, works as a sliding hinge. It is cushioned by a soft disc of cartilage known as the articular disc. This keeps the various surfaces of the jawbone from coming into contact with each other and allows the joint to move smoothly as your mouth opens and closes. When illness, injury or a mechanical problem causes the jaw to become misaligned or inflamed, that disc of cartilage can become damaged. This, in turn, interferes with the smooth working of the jaw. This type of malfunction is known as temporomandibular disorder, or TMD. The clicking sound that you noticed is a common symptom of TMD. Some people report hearing the joint grind or pop. Additional symptoms include pain in the region of the jaw, temple or ear; headache; difficulty opening the mouth;

and episodes in which the jaw locks shut. Due to the proximity of the TMJ to the interior structures of the ear, it is possible for a TMD to adversely affect hearing. The jaw and the middle ear share muscles, ligaments and nerve pathways, and any existing irritation or dysfunction in the shared anatomy can alter how sound is perceived. Someone living with TMD may experience ear pain, muffled hearing and tinnitus, the condition you are asking about. This occurs when someone perceives a sound that does not have an external source. The phantom sounds of tinnitus can range from faint to very loud, and can include buzzing, hissing, ringing, whistling or squealing.

Unfortunately, there is no single test that can identify whether TMD has led to tinnitus. Instead, a doctor will use your medical history, existing symptoms and a physical examination of the jaw and ear to help uncover a possible cause. This exam includes checking for ear infection and signs of physical jaw dysfunction. The clinician may palpate the jaw to assess

for tenderness, measure the maximum width of the mouth opening and watch for lateral deviation as the jaw opens and closes. In some cases, hearing or imaging tests may be suggested.

Signs that TMD may play a role in tinnitus include persistent jaw dysfunction; a sensation of fullness in the ear without evidence of infection; and tinnitus that changes with jaw movement, such as chewing, clenching or yawning. In your own case, the fact that the tinnitus appeared in tandem with the TMD repair you underwent suggests a possible connection. It would be wise to discuss the situation with your ENT, and if needed, seek a second opinion.

Society says blood testing an option for colorectal screenings

Blood testing can be used to detect colorectal cancers, the American Cancer Society said on May 27. The society recommends regular screening for colorectal cancer for most people starting at age 45. In an update to screening recommendations, the group kept in place its preference for colonoscopies, procedures in which doctors examine a patient’s bowels while the person is under anesthesia. Under the guidance, colonoscopies should be performed every 10 years.

People who opt against a colonoscopy should

either choose a different visual exam, such as one using X-ray technology, or stool-based tests, according to the society.

People who do not undergo visual exams or stool-based tests can have a blood test instead.

“Blood-based screening tests are not preferred screening options at this time; they should be recommended only to individuals who decline or have not completed one of the preferred colorectal cancer screening tests,” authors of the updated guidelines said in a paper published by the society’s journal.

The blood tests are not preferred in part because data suggest they have lower sensitivity for precancerous lesions and

stage 1 cancers.

“Ongoing evaluation of adherence, real-world implementation, and clinical outcomes will inform future updates for these new tests,” the

authors wrote. A positive blood test shbe followed by a colonoscopy, ideally within six months, according to the society. The recommended

blood-based test, known as the Shield test, analyzes changes to DNA floating in the blood that may indicate a tumor or precancerous growth in the colon. Federal regulators approved it in 2024.

The updated guidelines also added an upgraded stool-based test, Cologuard Plus, and ColoSense, a newly approved test. Both can be done at home.

“We need to increase our emphasis on colorectal cancer as a highly preventable disease as much as a treatable one,”

Dr. Robert Smith, senior vice president for early cancer detection science at the American Cancer Society and senior author of the report, said

in a statement. “By offering more screening tools in our guideline update, more eligible adults will be able to participate in lifesaving colorectal cancer testing, helping to close the screening gap and catch more cancers at an earlier, treatable stage.”

Dr. William Dahut, chief scientific officer at the American Cancer Society, said, “No matter which test you choose, what’s most important is to get screened, and that includes underserved, rural, and minority populations. These changes were developed to add to the colorectal cancer screening arsenal and help ensure preventive cancer care is available to all.”

Iran halts strikes on Israel but warns of renewed attacks in Lebanon

Iran said on Monday that it has suspended military operations against Israel following a weekend exchange of missile strikes, but warned that any further Israeli attacks — including ongoing operations in southern Lebanon — would trigger a more severe response.

The statement, carried by Iran’s state-affiliated Tasnim news agency, appeared to signal an effort by Tehran to de-escalate tensions after the most direct exchange of fire between the two countries since a fragile ceasefire took effect at the beginning of April, bringing most of the fighting to a halt.

“The powerful Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in support of the oppressed people of Lebanon, delivered a painful response to this regime (Israel),” the Iranian military said.

“Should the aggressions and hostile acts continue — including in southern Lebanon — far more severe and crushing measures than before will be forthcoming.”

The warning came after Israel launched fresh strikes inside Iran on Monday, targeting military and infrastructure sites, while Iranian forces fired additional missiles

toward Israel.

The Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen also launched a missile toward Israel and announced what they described as a complete ban on Israeli maritime navigation in the Red Sea.

The escalation followed Israeli airstrikes in Beirut over the weekend that Israel said targeted Hezbollah command facilities in the Dahiyeh district in response to rocket fire from Lebanon.

Iran had previously warned that an attack on Beirut could reignite a broader regional war.

Ceasefire Signals Amid Continued Fighting

Iran’s announcement came as U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism that both sides were moving toward a ceasefire despite the renewed violence.

“Both sides, Israel and Iran, are looking to do an immediate CEASEFIRE!”

Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday.

“Final negotiations on ‘Peace’ are proceeding, subject to ignorance or stupidity getting in its way.”

Earlier in the day, Trump had urged both countries to immediately stop “shooting” after Israel and Iran exchanged missile attacks.

The president also said a U.S.-led blockade

targeting Iran would remain in place until a final peace deal has been struck.

“The blockade will remain in place, and in full force and effect, until a ‘Final Deal’ is reached,” Trump wrote.

The latest military activity has threatened to complicate negotiations between Washington and Tehran, which Trump has repeatedly described as nearing a breakthrough despite months of conflict.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said earlier Monday that the latest fighting would only worsen an already “chaotic diplomatic process” and said indirect contacts with Washington were taking place in an atmosphere of “extreme suspicion.”

Baghaei accused Israel of attempting to sabotage diplomacy and said the United States bore responsibility for actions taken by its ally.

Despite the escalation in tensions, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a social media post on Monday that Tehran has not abandoned negotiations with the United States.

“Diplomacy and defense are the two wings of national power,” Pezeshkian said in the post. “We have neither left the battlefield nor abandoned the negotiating table.”

The latest developments came after the Israeli

military said early Monday that it had struck targets in western and central Iran.

Senior Israeli security officials said that the first wave of attacks targeted restored air-defense systems, an airport, and a drone base in an effort to create an aerial corridor for possible future operations.

A second wave targeted facilities within the petrochemical complex in Mahshahr in southwestern Iran, according to Israeli officials.

Iran responded with another round of missile launches toward Israel, while the Houthis renewed attacks from Yemen.

Israeli Ambassador to the United States Yechiel Leiter said Iran had fired 11 ballistic missiles toward Israel and defended Israel’s military response.

“Each one of those missiles can level an entire neighborhood and kill hundreds,” Leiter wrote on social media. “No selfrespecting country in the world would tolerate such an attack, and neither will Israel.”

Senior officials in Jerusalem said that Israel’s smaller security cabinet was expected to meet later Monday to discuss the latest escalation and determine next steps. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz held consultations overnight with senior security officials.

Flesh-eating screwworm reappears in US

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday that a 3-week-old calf in Zavala County, Texas, near the Mexican border, had been infected by the New World screwworm.

Two days later, a second case of the flesh-eating New World screwworm was detected in a 1-month-old calf in the same county, according to the department, just 5.6 miles away from the first confirmed case.

South Texas cattlemen and landowners have closely monitored the parasite’s march northward from Panama since 2023.

The Texas cases mark the first outbreak of the flesh-eating parasite since Florida Key deer were infected in 2016.

Now, it’s a race against the clock as federal and state officials scramble to stop the spread of screwworms that can infect animals and humans alike, causing horrific wounds that can be fatal if left untreated.

Potentially at risk is the $100 billion U.S. cattle industry.

The government’s main tool against the pest is the release of sterile flies, which eradicated the screwworm from Texas during a devastating infestation about 50 years ago.

Sterile males mate with females, causing them to lay unviable eggs — a key strategy in past eradications.

But now only 100 million such flies are produced each week at a single plant in Panama.

That’s far short of the estimated 500 million flies that would need to be released weekly to push the screwworm back to the Darien Gap, a stretch of jungle between Panama and Colombia that was once a natural barrier, according to the USDA.

Animal and Human Risk

Screwworm infestations begin when a female screwworm fly lays eggs on a wound or the mucus membranes of a mammal.

A wound as minor as a tick bite can attract a female fly to feed. A single female can produce about 3,000 eggs in a lifespan that can last up to 30 days. Eggs hatch into larvae, or maggots, that burrow into the flesh of animals and begin to eat. The last time screwworms were detected in Texas was 1966, followed by a major outbreak in 1972 with 90,000 reported cases. It was mostly contained by 1975.

While not as common, human infections can occur. Such a case was documented at a Maryland hospital last August after a person returned from a visit to El Salvador.

Screwworm Battle Plan

During a Friday news conference hosted by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, before the second case was reported, Texas state veterinarian Dr. Lewis Dinges said that the baby calf in the first case was recovering from a navel wound.

Adm. Michael Schmoyer, a member of the USDA’s screwworm response team, said the screwworm

House to take up $70B bill to fund ICE, border control

The U.S. House will consider legislation this week to provide around $70 billion in funding to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other immigration enforcement agencies, amid concerns among moderate Republicans about a so-called weaponization fund, leaving the final outcome of the vote in doubt.

The funding measure — which provides immigration law enforcement funding until the end of President Donald Trump’s term in 2029 — passed the Senate after an extended voting process.

In an early morning vote on June 5, the Senate approved the measure 52-47. All Republicans except Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, voted for the measure, and all Democrats except Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., who did not vote, voted against it, setting it up for a vote in the House.

The funding legislation is being fast-tracked under the partisan reconciliation process in order to fully close the Department of Homeland Security funding gap following the start of a partial government shutdown in mid-February amid continued Democratic opposition to funding for portions of the executive branch.

The administration’s previously announced plans to create a proposed $1.8 billion compensation fund for individuals alleging harm caused by the federal government were a central issue in the debate and vote series leading to the Senate’s passage of the measure.

This “weaponization fund” prompted controversy on Capitol Hill and beyond, with several moderate Republicans demanding an outright legal prohibition on such a use of taxpayer funds.

After progress on the legislation stalled amid Senate Republicans’ opposition to the fund, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced that the administration would end the program on June 2 — a move that helped break internal Republican divisions.

“We’re not moving forward with the fund, period,” Blanche said at the time.

Originally, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., told reporters that the House had hoped to quickly move to a vote on a rule following the Senate’s passage of the measure. No such vote was held, potentially foreshadowing difficulties the bill may face in the lower chamber.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., can spare no more than two defections with his current majority, meaning every vote counts in party-line votes.

Lawmakers in purple New York, California and Pennsylvania districts are particularly vulnerable. Some moderate Republican House lawmakers have also expressed concerns about the weaponization fund, opposition that could easily tank the measure in the lower chamber.

One of the leading Republican opponents of the fund has been Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., a longserving moderate member.

Fitzpatrick and Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., introduced their own bill — the Bipartisan Transparency for American Taxpayers Act — to block any federal funds from being used to pay claims out of the account.

Senate Republicans’ updated legislative text also formally removes $1 billion in funding tied to Trump’s ballroom project and White House security updates.

Some Republican senators continue to express concerns about the Department of Justice’s proposed Anti-Weaponization Fund. Several Republican senators backed amendments to permanently eliminate the program, distrusting Blanche’s assurances that the administration no longer intends to pursue it.

was originally expected to reach Texas last summer.

“Our aggressive actions have slowed down the pest. We knew it was a challenge because we did not have enough [sterile] flies yet,” said Schmoyer.

He assured the public that help is on the way, including the use of technology and strategies to slow the spread, as well as the production of more sterile flies designed to kill the pest.

The USDA gave Mexico $21 million to renovate a fruit fly production facility in Metapa, Mexico, to provide an additional 100 million sterile screwworm flies, he said.

That facility is expected to be completed by the end of June, with the additional flies becoming available by the end of this year, he said.

USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins authorized construction of an $8.5 million sterile insect dispersal facility at Moore Air Force Base in Edinburg, Texas, expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The airbase would include a $750 million facility to boost domestic sterile fly production.

Schmoyer said the facility is due to come online in November of next year, providing at least another 100 million flies a week.

Abbott, who issued a statewide emergency declaration in January to help prevent a screwworm infestation, added that Texas is willing to provide additional resources to accelerate the timeline, aiming to complete the facility by May of next year.’’

During the Senate vote-a-rama on the legislation, GOP senators batted down several amendments seeking to ban the fund.

An amendment by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to block the anti-weaponization fund failed in a 49-50 vote.

An amendment offered by Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., that would have reallocated taxpayer funds from an anti-weaponization fund to fraud enforcement was also rejected, 15-84. Tillis had said he was introducing the amendment to ensure that the fund cannot be revived in the future.

“I think even DOJ knows that this was a bad idea, and what we need to do is provide finality,” Tillis said. “They’ve said that they’ve quiesced the program, then why can’t we just take the step of statutorily eliminating the question, so that a future decision to reopen it is eliminated?”

who were in the homeless or unhoused category, 419 of them were also English Learners, Daisher wrote in a follow-up email.

“Over 500 is a lot, which speaks to the economic challenges many people are facing right now and the need to live with someone else for financial reasons,” Daisher said. She added that many families have reported living with other families, a situation that can leave students with less space to study and focus on coursework, as well as reduced privacy.

Ways the Hart district helps students who may be experiencing homelessness

during a school year include programs such as library nights, which are open to everyone, tutoring during lunch and creating a positive school culture.

Parameters in place to identify vulnerable students begin at the start of the school year, during the August enrollment period.

“We

have to do a little detective work but the good news is we have people who are wonderfully perceptive and so helpful. There’s no stigma.”

A student residency questionnaire is required for all students and allows district personnel to learn about each student’s living situation and helps identify warning signs, Daisher said. “Our social workers, counselors and administrators can really look at their actual circumstances.”

landfill to set aside approximately $22 million in relocation funds.

That money would’ve included $4,000 a month in funds for almost 950 households for about six months.

Chiquita originally opened a relief fund in March 2024, closing it in February 2025 after concluding the landfill’s environmental issues were resolving. California environmental regulators later called the data the landfill had used to close the fund biased.

After the district court’s August ruling, Chiquita’s owners had appealed the injunction, but the three-judge panel on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals determined none existed — the lower court had merely ordered the landfill’s owners and L.A. County to “meet, confer,” file two separate statements regarding “a more narrowly tailored injunction” and whether the county is exempt from posting bond, according to the court filing.

In the August filing, District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong had asked both parties to narrow down “the households to be included; the availability of relocation versus home hardening; and the duration of any relocation.”

Frimpong had added that, while the county’s survey data confirming the landfill’s health impacts was

somewhat limited, she concluded that it had shown “imminent, irreparable harm.”

At the time of that August filing, a spokesperson for the landfill had expressed gratitude that Frimpong agreed with the landfill that the approximately $20 million should not be immediately added to the Castaic and Val Verde residents’ relief fund.

Steven Howse, the lead plaintiff on a separate class action lawsuit against the landfill, said he was disappointed that the legal system allowed the landfill to postpone giving Val Verde and Castaic residents sorely needed relocation funds on a set schedule.

“It’s very frustrating. They’ve been playing a lot of games, saying things are getting better and manipulating numbers,” Howse said.

Howse was able to use a smaller payout from the landfill’s original fund to install better air filtration at his own home, but the fund’s open-ended end date made it impossible for many families to plan a move, he said, not knowing whether the fund would still be open even the next month.

Howse said he put his family’s house on the market in July 2025, and was able to move to Acton in January. Howse’s daughter had lost her sense of smell living near the landfill, he said — since the move, it’s come back.

“My son used to get two to three nose bleeds a week, and since we’ve moved, he hasn’t had one,” Howse said.

Local 5-Day Forecast

If there are several warning signs that indicate a student may be homeless, district personnel have confidential conversations with the students “with great empathy and understanding in order to make sure we can provide the

services and not miss any kids,” she added. Daisher acknowledged that even with the required student questionnaire, not all students may be identified, or their situation could change throughout the school year. But if students show signs of sleepiness in the classroom, aren’t submitting assignments, or don’t have a change of fresh clothes when they come to school and other patterns, it can indicate the students’ living situation may have changed.

“We have to do a little detective work but the good news is we have people who are wonderfully perceptive and so helpful. There’s no stigma,” Daisher said.

Brigham Young said, “Silence may be golden, but can you think of a better way to entertain someone than to listen to him?”

Sometimes at the bridge table, silence is golden. If your side is going to be outbid, you often do best to pass throughout, because every call gives information to the opposing declarer. But, of course, sometimes you will not know that you are going to be outbid. And aggressive competition might push your opponents into the wrong contract.

In this deal, West had a perfectly normal opening bid, but it helped South with the play in four hearts. West began with three rounds of clubs. What did declarer do after he had ruffed East’s queen?

South’s takeout double, followed by the one-heart rebid, promised a good 17 to 19 high-card points. North took a shot at game, knowing that his partner would be able to place the cards accurately.

Someone who paid no attention to

the auction would cross to dummy with a trump and run the diamond queen. But West would win and return anything but a club. Eventually declarer would lose a spade trick to go down one.

West is almost certain to have the diamond king for his opening bid. So declarer, who needs hearts 3-2, draws a couple of rounds of trumps. Then he should cash the diamond ace and play another diamond. If West ducks, South can afford a spade loser. And if West wins the trick, declarer takes two spades, five hearts and three diamonds.
