Outdoor Activities to Reduce Stress and Recharge

M

any Americans are seeking ways to press reset, turning to meditation apps, gym memberships and beyond to improve mental health. However, there may be a simpler (and more effective) option: spending time in the great outdoors. Often viewed as a powerful way to counter the persistent pressures of daily life, outdoor experiences aren’t just leisure — they’re an effective mental and emotional reset that can rival or even surpass traditional wellness habits in addressing burnout, constant connectivity and daily strain. Better yet, the results take hold quickly: Nearly 73% of respondents to a survey from Eddie Bauer Adventure Club said they begin to feel more relaxed or recharged within an hour of being outdoors. Most respondents agreed a short outdoor trip is at least as effective as their usual wellness routines. People typically gravitate toward experiences that feel achievable within busy schedules. Brief, low-commitment outings can still deliver meaningful benefits. However, barriers persist that keep adventure-seekers indoors. Among respondents, family responsibilities (30%) and work or schedule demands (23%) often prevent them from spending more time outdoors. To overcome those roadblocks and enjoy the benefits of nature, consider this inspirational guide for activities that get you away from the screen and into the wild.

Hike a New Trail

If you’re already a hiker, beginner or expert, stepping onto an unfamiliar trail can offer a refreshing change of pace and perspective. Whether it’s a wooded path close to home or a scenic overlook, hiking encourages movement, mindfulness and curiosity, helping quiet mental clutter while creating space to reconnect with yourself and your surroundings.

Try Paddle Boarding or Canoeing

Get off your feet and into the water with activities like paddle boarding or canoeing, which combine gentle physical activity with calm scenery. Oftentimes, you’ll find your focus on managing the watercraft keeps you present in the moment rather than

dios for birdsong, soft winds and rustling trees.

Join an Adventure Club

Visit a National Park

If you crave the wild, wide-open spaces, towering peaks and untamed beauty, the journey can take shape by joining an adventure club. For active explorers seeking connection and balance, the new Eddie Bauer Adventure Club creates unique travel experiences rooted in nature and elevated by comfort. Rugged meets refined as wild destinations turn into welcoming retreats with modern resort condos, as well as future cabins, lodges and tiny homes designed to ignite a spirit of discovery. Guided excursions take you off the grid to inspire adventure and thoughtfully crafted spaces let you recharge in style. From red rocks and winding rivers to serene peaks and sharp air, you can step into landscapes that take your breath away then settle into stays that restore you as naturally as the views outside.

Practice Yoga Outdoors

Veteran yogis and newcomers alike can enjoy the benefits of taking the mat outside, deepening the sense of calm and connection yoga is already known for. Try a quiet park or your own backyard as a natural setting for stretching, breathing and slowing down, trading fluorescent lights and crowded stu-

Step away from everyday routines and immerse yourself in breathtaking landscapes by visiting your nearest national park. Depending on your location, towering mountains, expansive deserts, dense forests and rushing waterfalls inspire awe while offering reminders to slow down and appreciate what’s around you. Whether you spend a weekend camping, take a scenic drive or simply enjoy a short walk, national parks provide a meaningful escape blending adventure, reflection and restoration.

Start or End Your Day with the Sky

The simplest outdoor moments can have the greatest impact. Wake up and watch the sunrise for a calm, intentional start the day. Wait until evening settles to stargaze at night, encouraging stillness and perspective. Away from screens and distractions, these quiet moments can help you feel more connected to the world and less consumed by daily pressures. Looking for a Change? Try a Micro Getaway.

or residents craving a change of scenery without committing to a full weekend away, micro getaways offer a refreshing solution: short, accessible trips that deliver maximum relaxation in just 24 hours. Within a 90-minute drive, locals can find coastal harbors, mountain-rimmed valleys, historic downtowns, and even a full-service casino resort. These destinations are close enough for spontaneous travel yet far enough to feel like a true break from routine. Whether you’re looking for quiet streets, ocean air, or a bit of nightlife, these nearby escapes make it easy to reset without rearranging your schedule.

Ojai: A Creative Valley Retreat

About 75 minutes from Santa Clarita, Ojai remains one of Southern California’s most distinctive small towns — an arts-driven valley framed by the Topatopa Mountains. Visitors often begin with a stroll along Ojai Avenue, where independent shops, galleries, and cafés create a relaxed, walkable core. Bart’s Books, the city’s famous open-air bookstore, is a favorite stop for travelers who enjoy browsing shelves under the sky. Nature lovers can explore the Ojai Meadows Preserve, a gentle network of trails ideal for a low-key morning walk. For those seeking deeper quiet, Meditation Mount offers pre-booked sanctuary hours

with panoramic views of the valley. As evening approaches, Ojai’s celebrated “Pink Moment” bathes the bluffs in rose-colored light — a natural spectacle that feels like a reward for making the drive. With boutique inns and small lodges throughout town, Ojai is an easy overnight escape that blends creativity, nature, and calm.

Ventura Harbor: A Breezy Coastal Reset

Ventura Harbor sits just under an hour from Santa Clarita and offers a breezy, oceanfront getaway perfect for travelers who want a simple, seaside day. The harbor village features restaurants, ice cream shops, galleries, and waterfront paths that make it easy to spend an afternoon wandering without an agenda. Families often rent pedal boats or kayaks to explore the calm harbor waters, while others prefer to sit along the promenade and watch fishing boats come and go. Ventura Harbor is also the departure point for Island Packers, the official boat service to Channel Islands National Park. Even if you’re not planning a full island excursion, watching the boats load up for their crossings adds a sense of adventure to the visit. With sunset views over the marina and plenty of casual dining options, Ventura Harbor is a lowstress coastal escape that fits neatly into a 24-hour window.

Solvang: A Danish-Style Village Close to Home

Solvang, about 80 minutes from Santa Clarita, offers a European-inspired getaway without leaving California. Known for its windmills, half-timbered architecture and walkable streets, the village is a favorite for travelers who enjoy themed destinations with plenty of character. Visitors can explore the Elverhøj Museum of History & Art, sample pastries from one of several Danish bakeries, or browse boutique shops that line the main avenues. Sunny Fields Park provides a quiet break from the downtown bustle, especially for families with children. Wine tasting rooms throughout the Santa Ynez Valley make Solvang a convenient base for sampling local varietals, while small inns and historic hotels offer comfortable overnight stays. For locals, Solvang delivers a charming cultural detour that feels far more distant than the drive suggests.

Santa Paula: History, Agriculture, and Small Town Calm

Just 45 minutes from Santa Clarita, Santa Paula blends agricultural heritage with a classic smalltown feel. The city’s historic downtown features murals, vintage storefronts, and local eateries that make for an easy afternoon of exploring. See MICRO GETAWAYS, page 17

s parents, we want to give our children the tools they need to make good decisions and stay safe. Now that students are back in school, many young riders are using bikes and e-bikes to get to class, meet up with friends or travel around their neighborhoods. But no matter what they ride, one of their most important safety tools isn’t attached to the bike. It is good judgment, awareness and making smart decisions while riding. With Santa Clarita’s extensive network of trails, paseos and bike-friendly infrastructure, young riders have plenty of opportunities to get around our community on two wheels. Riding offers independence, exercise and a convenient way for young people to get around. We also need to pay attention to how our children are riding, where they are going and the habits they are developing. One easy way to start the conversation is to remember one word: SAFE. S Secure your helmet. Before the wheels start moving, the helmet goes on. It should fit properly, sit level on the head and be securely fastened. A Allow extra time to stop. Speed changes everything. The faster someone is riding, the less time they have to react when a car pulls out of a driveway, a pedestrian steps onto a paseo or another cyclist slows unexpectedly. Riders should watch their speed, leave space between themselves and others and slow down anywhere conditions can change quickly. F Follow the rules of the road. Stop signs and traffic signals apply to cyclists, too. Riders should travel predictably, signal before turning, yield

when required and slow down at intersections and crossings. E Eyes up, distractions down. A phone, text message or pair of earbuds can take attention away at exactly the wrong moment. Riders need to see and hear what is happening around them. They should put their phones away, keep their eyes ahead and pay attention to other vehicles and pedestrians. If your child rides an e-bike, there is another important question to consider: Do you know what they are riding? E-bike classes have different requirements, and modifications that increase speed or power may cause a bike to no longer meet the legal definition of an e-bike. High-powered electric motorcycles are not e-bikes and are not permitted for youth to ride on City streets, trails or paseos. Families can learn more about e-bike classifications, riding requirements and legal equipment at BikeSantaClarita.com/Ebikes. Residents can also help address repeated illegal e-motorcycle activity. The City’s Resident Service Center, or RSC, includes an E-Motorcycles request option that allows residents to provide a location and details about the activity without confronting the rider. That information can then be routed to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff ’s Station for appropriate follow-up. Residents can submit a request online at SantaClarita.gov/RSC or download the City’s RSC app to report concerns directly from a mobile device. Safe riding begins with simple habits and involved parents. Before your child heads out, take a moment to ask where they are going, what they are riding and whether they are ready to ride SAFE. Simple, Time-Saving Snacks for Busy Families

W

hen every afternoon feels like a race to the dinner table and weekends are a blur of activities, there’s only one way to keep loved ones from getting “hangry”: easy, delicious appetizers and snacks. Keeping a few must-have ingredients in the pantry can help you avoid those dreaded moments between meals when stomachs are growling and a meal feels so close, yet so far away. If you’re craving a quick, savory bite, look no further than these Cheesy Mexican Rice Bites. They’re prepared in just 20 minutes — but don’t be surprised if you find yourself making a second batch afterward. Featuring a touch of heat from Minute Jalapeno Rice Cups that are conveniently pre-portioned and ready in one minute, you can enjoy minimal cleanup while staving off hunger. Classic Porcupine Meatballs offer another versatile solution as a make-ahead snack before busy weekends. For first-timers, here’s a secret: meatballs aren’t as tricky to make as they might look. Just mix the ingredients, form meatballs by hand and cook in a pot until ready to enjoy, or refrigerate then reheat once you’re home from Saturday’s soccer games. Since these are “porcupine” meatballs, that means they’re made with Minute Instant White Rice rather than traditional breadcrumbs. Known for its light fluffiness and easy prep, it’s ready in just 5 minutes. With this dish, however, it’s simply added to the meatballs straight from the box. Visit MinuteRice.com to find more convenient snack ideas that save time and trouble in the kitchen.

Cheesy Mexican Rice Bites

Prep time 5 minutes Cook time 15 minutes Servings 2 1 Minute Jalapeno Rice Cup 1/4 cup diced onions 1/2 teaspoon cumin 1/2 cup Mexican cheese blend, shredded 1 egg, beaten 1/2 cup breadcrumbs nonstick cooking spray salsa (optional) sour cream (optional)

Preheat air fryer to 375 F. Heat rice according to S E P T E M B E R 13, 2026

package directions. In large mixing bowl, combine rice, diced onions, cumin and Mexican cheese blend. Mix well. Add beaten egg to rice mixture and stir until fully combined. Using hands, shape about 2 tablespoons rice mixture into ball. Repeat with remaining mixture. Roll rice balls in breadcrumbs, ensuring they are fully coated. Lightly coat air fryer basket with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking. Place rice bites in single layer in air fryer basket, leaving space between each for even cooking. Work in batches, if necessary. Spray tops of each ball with nonstick cooking spray to help with browning. Cook 15 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp, flipping halfway through for even browning. Allow to cool slightly and serve with salsa or sour cream, if desired.

Porcupine Meatballs

Prep time 10 minutes Cook time 20 minutes Servings 4-6

1 tablespoon butter 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 pound lean ground beef 1 cup Minute White Rice, plus additional for serving, cooked 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 packet (1 1/2 ounces) meatloaf seasoning 1 1/4 cups water, divided 1 jar (24 ounces) pasta sauce grated Parmesan cheese

In 3-quart saucepan over medium-high heat, melt butter. Add onions and cook, stirring, until starting to soften. In large bowl, combine onions, beef, 1 cup uncooked rice, egg, seasoning and 1/4 cup water; mix gently by hand until well blended. Shape mixture into medium-sized meatballs. Pour pasta sauce and remaining water into same 3-quart saucepan. Stir and bring to boil. Add meatballs and return to boil. Reduce heat to low and cover. Simmer 15 minutes, or until meatballs are cooked through. Serve meatballs and sauce over extra cooked rice and top with grated Parmesan cheese. Substitution: Ground turkey, chicken or meatless ground can be used in place of beef. (Feature Impact)  S U N D AY S I G N A L · 9

Resilient Flooring Perks for Short- and Long-Term Owners

W

hether you just closed on your forever home or decided to stay put with a low-interest loan and renovate, choosing the right flooring often pays off. Flooring is a foundation homeowners count on every day in their homes and often a key factor for potential buyers. No matter where you are in your home journey, your flooring needs to deliver. Great design, durability, ease of maintenance, convenience, indoor air quality, performance and value — these are universal considerations when choosing flooring, but not every type of flooring offers these benefits with such a wide breadth of options. Resilient flooring has a host of solutions that offer a balance of performance with personalization, making it a great option for homeowners at every stage of their building or renovation journeys.

Resilient Meets You Where You Are

If you’re staying put, one of the most impactful things you can do to improve your home is refresh your floors. In addition to a new and inspiring aesthetic, resilient flooring offers numerous options that deliver more. Ease of maintenance is one of the most valued attributes in flooring. What to Do About Diet During Cancer Treatment

T

he foods people eat can have a profound impact on their day. Foods that contain the array of vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbs, and healthy fats a body needs can provide fuel throughout the day. A diet deficient in such beneficiary ingredients can make people feel sluggish in the short-term and even compromise their long-term health. While the hallmarks of a healthy diet do not necessarily differ for people based on age and other variables, the National Cancer Institute notes that people with cancer may need to follow diets that are a little less conventionally healthy. These dietary tips, courtesy of the NCI, can help cancer patients navigate diet during treatment. Recognize you may need extra protein and calories Strength is a helpful ally when receiving cancer treatment, and that extra fortitude can come from diet. The NCI notes patients may need to consume some extra protein and calories to help combat the side

effects of treatment. Patients are urged to speak with their health care teams, including their primary care physician, before making any changes to their diets. But the NCI suggests people who can might want to include more meat, fish, eggs, dairy, fats and plantbased proteins in their diets.

Shop differently It’s not just what cancer patients eat, but also what they shop for and how they shop. The NCI recommends stocking up on foods that require little or no cooking. Fatigue is a common side effect of cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and patients may not have the energy to prepare healthy meals each night. Stocking up on healthy fare that does not require lots of prep and cook time can ensure patients don’t resort to quick but unhealthy options at the last minute. It also can help if patients begin using shop-fromhome and delivery services that are now offered by many grocery stores. Cook ahead of time Cooking ahead ensures nu-

tritious foods will be on hand on treatment days, when patients may lack the energy to prepare and cook meals. Freeze meals so all that needs to be done come meal time is some defrosting and heating up. Lean on easily digested foods The NCI advises patients stock up on easy-to-digest foods. Nausea is a common side effect of cancer treatments, and patients encountering nausea should prioritize foods that are easy on the stomach in an effort to alleviate such discomfort. Snacks like pretzels, saltine crackers, and tender, well-cooked vegetables are easily digested and should not exacerbate nausea. Come meal time, the NCI recommends skinless chicken or turkey that is baked or broiled, plain pasta, potatoes, and refined cold cereals. Conventional dietary wisdom may not apply when being treated for cancer. Patients must still emphasize nutrient-rich foods, but they may need to tweak their cooking, shopping and snacking habits to make things easier on themselves during treatment. (MC) 

Small Business Blind Spot — Business Credit

N

early 60% of small business owners seek financing each year, according to the Federal Reserve’s 2025 Small Business Credit Survey, but only about 2 in 5 secure the full amount they request. It’s not uncommon for business owners to be caught off guard by a credit issue just when they’re poised to take their companies to the next level. To help business owners better understand how business credit can aid growth, consider this information from Chase for Business.

cards or lending products that rely on their personal credit score for business purposes, according to a May 2026 Chase small business survey. However, business credit can play an important role in accessing capital, managing operations and planning for the future. Without a clear understanding of their business credit profiles, owners may miss out on opportunities or face unexpected challenges when seeking loans, negotiating with suppliers or expanding their businesses. That’s why it’s essential for small business owners to proactively monitor and manage their business credit.

To help millions of small business owners better understand and manage this part of their financial picture,

Chase for Business introduced Business Credit Journey, a complimentary digital tool designed to help owners establish, monitor and improve their business credit. The tool brings together credit monitoring, score insights, actionable steps and educational resources in one place. It builds on the American Dream Initiative, a nationwide effort to help power 10 million small businesses, offering resources beyond basic credit tracking to help owners spot issues early, understand what’s driving their scores and take action before opportunities slip away. “Small business owners aren’t overlooking business credit, they just can’t see it clearly or aren’t sure how to use that information,” said Jameson Troutman, head of product for Chase for Business. “This tool is meant to change that, offering owners an easier, accessible way to understand their business credit scores and empowering them to take action over time.”

Why Business Credit Matters Business credit is only one part of the financing equation, but it can influence how prepared a business is for future opportunities, help owners make informed decisions and avoid surprises when it matters most.

Why Business Credit Can be Easy to Overlook

For many owners, business credit is easy to put off while managing the daily demands of running their businesses. That can be especially true when they’re focused on growth, and nearly 80% of business owners expect growth in 2026, according to Chase’s Business Leaders Outlook. In that environment, business credit may not get attention until a financing need or growth opportunity puts it into focus. That often means businesses confront their credit profile only when it starts to limit their options.

How Digital Tools Can Help

Created to make business credit easier to understand and manage, the tool allows business owners to monitor their credit scores, see what is influencing them and receive insights and actionable steps tailored to their business profile. It’s designed to help owners stay on top of changes over time and take a more proactive approach to strengthening their business credit. “Small business owners deserve resources that help them make more informed decisions,” Troutman said. For many small businesses, credit only becomes visible when something depends on it. Having a clearer view earlier can change the decisions owners make long before that moment. SENIORLIVING

What are the Warning Signs of Isolation?

H

uman beings are wired for social connection, but millions of people confront isolation every day. Many of those people are seniors who lose contact with loved ones as time goes by. While temporary loneliness can be tolerated, prolonged isolation can be very harmful. Research by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine found roughly one-quarter of American adults age 65 and older live in isolation. Identifying the early warning signs of isolation may help to prevent the physiological and psychological toll isolation can take. Here are some signs of social isolation to watch for.

Withdrawal from Events

An early indicator of social isolation, according to Healthline, is a pattern of canceling plans, not answering phone calls, and withdrawing from established social circles or hobbies. Self-care is not prioritized: Another sign of social isolation is personal hygiene and other self-care habits like eating nutritious meals becomes S E P T E M B E R 13, 2026

neglected. It can signal that a person’s routine has changed due to a lack of social accountability.

Home Upkeep Falters

A person who is withdrawing from social connections may feel it’s no longer necessary to keep a home clean and tidy since they don’t anticipate visitors.

Irritability and Low Mood

Persistent isolation can trigger a sense of hopelessness. Individuals may become defensive or experience dramatic shifts in mood and sleep patterns, according to Healthline. Reliance on social media or television: Socially isolated individuals may turn to television or non-interactive social media scrolling as a proxy for human interaction, offers HealthDirect. Social isolation can take its toll on anyone, particularly seniors. Individuals are urged to check in with friends, family or neighbors they suspect may be isolating to provide the companionship and help they may need. (MC) 

utdoor living spaces can be welcoming areas to spend time in nature. Such spaces expand the possibilities for entertaining, as they tend to have more room for guests than home interiors, and they enable people to enjoy sunshine, fresh air and the sounds and sights of wildlife in relaxing settings. When planning outdoor living areas, homeowners must not underestimate the significance of drainage. Patios, pergolas, decks, and landscaping can increase comfort and convenience for homeowners. In fact, connection to the outdoors ranked high on the top 10 list of design drivers in The Future of Home Design, a survey conducted by the New Home Trends Institute in collaboration with Pro Builder. Fifty-eight percent of survey respondents said connection to the outdoors will be an important influence on their design choices in the years to come. When planning outdoor living spaces, it is easy to focus on aesthetic appeal and the finished project. But homeowners must carefully consider the impact these modifications will have on the landscape, particularly how they will affect drainage so it will not compromise the integrity of the new design nor impact the surrounding home and other structures. According to Kelly Masonry in Pennsylvania, without proper drainage, water can accumulate and that can lead to various issues. Here’s a more indepth look at why drainage is crucial when planning outdoor living areas. Drainage prevents water damage When water is allowed to collect on

patios and in and around hardscaping features, it can cause the materials to deteriorate over the years. Pavers or stones may shift, crack or become discolored, eventually becoming less safe. Drainage reduces accessibility issues and safety hazards Pooling water can make hard surfaces slippery, possibly leading to falls and other accidents. It also can make lawns soggy and muddy, which can limit easy access to areas of the yard. Drainage reduces soil erosion Water can cause erosion of surrounding soil, leading to uneven surfaces. Erosion also may threaten the stability of nearby structures. Drainage deters water infiltration Water has a way of finding cracks and crevices and thus entering structures. Rainwater that is not properly directed away from a home may eventually seep into the foundation, causing anything from structural damage to mold and mildew to making damp areas conducive to pests. Drainage is an essential consideration when planning outdoor living areas. Homeowners must use slope, drains and even vegetation to mitigate water issues on a property. (MC)  SEPTEMBER 13, 2026

Why you need dental insurance in retirement.

MICRO GETAWAYS Continued from page 7

The Santa Paula Art Museum showcases regional artists and rotating exhibits, while the California Oil Museum highlights the city’s industrial past. For outdoor travelers, the nearby Santa Paula Canyon offers scenic hiking, though trail conditions vary seasonally and should be checked in advance. With its slower pace and historic charm, Santa Paula is a practical micro getaway for readers who prefer quiet streets and cultural stops over coastal crowds.

Camarillo: Outlets, Old Town, and Open Spaces

Camarillo sits about an hour from Santa Clarita and offers a mix of shopping, dining, and open-space recreation. Many visitors begin at the Camarillo Premium Outlets, one of the region’s largest shopping destinations, before heading to Old Town Camarillo for dinner or a walk through its historic corridor. For nature-focused travelers, Camarillo Grove Park provides shaded trails and picnic areas, while nearby agricultural fields create a rural backdrop that contrasts with the city’s retail centers. With its blend of commerce and calm, Camarillo works well for travelers who want a flexible itinerary with both indoor and outdoor options.

Chumash Casino Resort: A Full-Service Escape in the Santa Ynez Valley

Located in Santa Ynez, roughly 85 minutes from Santa Clarita, Chumash Casino Resort offers a different kind of micro getaway — one centered on entertainment, dining, and relaxation. As a major regional destination, the resort features a full gaming floor, multiple restaurants, a spa, and a hotel designed for short, comfortable stays. S E P T E M B E R 13, 2026

Many Americans are fortunate to have dental coverage for their entire working life, through employer-provided benefits. When those benefits end with retirement, paying dental bills out-ofpocket can come as a shock, leading people to put off or even go without care. Simply put — without dental insurance, there may be an important gap in your healthcare coverage.

When you’re comparing plans ...  Look for coverage that helps pay for major services. Some plans may limit the number of procedures — or pay for preventive care only.  Look for coverage with no deductibles. Some plans may require you to pay hundreds out of pocket before benefits are paid.

Experience a full-service escape at Chumash Casino Resort. Courtesy photo

Guests can enjoy table games, slots, and live entertainment, or opt for a quieter visit focused on dining and spa services. The resort’s location places it close to Solvang and the broader Santa Ynez Valley, making it easy to pair a casino stay with wine tasting or a scenic drive. For residents seeking a more energetic 24hour escape, Chumash Casino provides a polished, all-in-one experience that contrasts with the quieter towns on this list.

A 24-Hour Trip That Fits Your Style

Micro getaways work because they’re simple: no long packing lists, no complicated itineraries, and no need to take time off work. Whether you prefer the artistic calm of Ojai, the ocean breeze of Ventura Harbor, the themed charm of Solvang, the historic streets of Santa Paula, the flexible pace of Camarillo, or the entertainment-driven energy of Chumash Casino, each destination offers a distinct way to reset within a single day. For locals, these quick escapes prove that you don’t need distance to feel renewed — just a short drive, a change of scenery, and a willingness to step out of routine. 

Medicare doesn’t pay for dental care.1

Previous dental work can wear out.

That’s right. As good as Medicare is, it was never meant to cover everything. That means if you want protection, you need to purchase individual insurance.

Even if you’ve had quality dental work in the past, you shouldn’t take your dental health for granted. In fact, your odds of having a dental problem only go up as you age.2

Early detection can prevent small problems from becoming expensive ones.

Treatment is expensive — especially the services people over 50 often need.

The best way to prevent large dental bills is preventive care. The American Dental Association recommends checkups twice a year.

Consider these national average costs of treatment ... $274 for a checkup ... $299 for a filling ... $1,471 for a crown.3 Unexpected bills like this can be a real burden, especially if you’re on a fixed income.

Who is Doing Your Thinking? By David Hegg

I

started writing my column in 2010 with one goal in mind. My goal was not to have you agree with my views. Rather, it was, and remains, to stimulate your mind to think, critique, tear my propositions and arguments apart in the laboratory of your mind, and come to your own conclusions. To that end, I have tried to speak clearly, honestly, and in a forthright manner so you will know my underlying ideology and be able to assess the level to which my writing is beneficial to you. Why write to make you think? I have watched with fear and amazement how our commitment to think for ourselves has eroded. Remember when we used to applaud independent thinkers? Remember when we expected those in positions of power to have reasoned, evidence-based arguments? Most of all, remember when we didn’t take everything we were told at face value and refused to swallow it without vetting it through our educated ideological grid? We are seeing the great intellectual migration from thinking for ourselves to letting others think, decide and declare for us. As a people, we have grown too willing to allow media and social platforms to do our thinking for us. We’ve become addicted to the convenience of being told what is true and necessary, and the result is terrifying. We’re losing our ability to critique, recognize and reject the babble of those who pontificate, obfuscate and lie to us. As if that isn’t bad enough, we have gravitated from thinking to griping as

our sole means of conversation about the goings-on in our world. We don’t think anymore. We respond, whine and trade in disgust, but we rarely engage in the hard work of thinking logically and offering coherent, substantive commentary. For example, take social media. Research shows a majority of Americans, especially those under 40, see social media as their primary source of local, national and world news, commentary, and conclusions. If it’s on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, any number of podcasts, Substack, or websites, it must be trustworthy, unless, of course, it isn’t. And the proof that these social platforms are questionable at best and dangerous at worst is the $17 billion settlement Meta just reached after being found guilty of engaging in illegitimate practices that fostered social media addiction among its younger readers. In the aftermath of COVID-19, we experienced a short-lived awakening from our trusting slumber. It is no exaggeration to say what died in the pandemic was trust. We found out we couldn’t trust the statements of health officials, government authorities, or the news outlets they commanded. Rather than become a nation that demanded truth, committed to critiquing and verifying what we were being told, we shifted from major news outlets to social media and other more convenient, entertaining sources of information. That’s the problem. We’ve become addicted to convenience. Start the morning with your iPad, phone, or other contraption and log on to the world.

Read the headlines, and tell yourself you have all the information you need to engage in the office gripe sessions. So, what’s the answer? You won’t like this, but the only way to get the truth needed to make good choices and decisions is to work at it. Believing you can mature through spoon-feeding is not only foolish but also dangerous. It is time to start thinking for yourself, vet what you hear, read research done by those who don’t have a horse in the political power race. For starters, continue reading the excellent reporting of The Signal. No axes to grind, only a passion to keep you aware and alert to what is happening in our community. So, what am I suggesting? Do some of your own thinking! For example, figure out why gas prices in California are monumentally higher than anywhere else. Research the high-speed rail project. Look up whether male and female are determined by biological markers in each of the billion or so cells of the human body. Find out how many dollars have been spent on “ending homelessness” and see if progress is being made. As you set about finding truth, be aware today’s power is found in words. Be alert to those who reshape reality through words, labels and slogans. Don’t be fooled when what they propose is more about emotions than reality. And lastly, force yourself to take knowing seriously. Don’t let others do your thinking and knowing for you. It is time to reclaim the discipline of independent, evidence-based, well-reasoned thought. Local resident David Hegg is senior pastor of Grace Baptist Church. “Ethically Speaking” appears Sundays.  S U N D AY S I G N A L · 1 9
