Editorial

For MedTech, 2026 will be about moving ahead collectively toward collaborative objectives to establish a global investment-based ecosystem for health-related innovation and growth. The MedTech North America Summit will take place in Florida on May 11-13. It will coincide with the release of the current edition of “MedTech World” magazine, which focuses on continued advances in the industry.

Florida is rapidly becoming a centre of importance for Life Sciences and Digital Health. It is expanding again in terms of the number of hospitals, research venues, and investors aligning with global Healthcare priorities to make their solutions scalable and to enable more efficient patient access to healthcare.

One of the most important themes in healthcare innovation is that it has recently shifted toward implementation grounded in experience and outcomes rather than theoretical concepts. A clear example of this shift can be seen in today’s many medtech entrepreneurs who share their own healthcare stories as they develop product ideas to meet specific patient needs, particularly in areas such as preventive care and remote patient monitoring. This represents a fundamental change in how medical device manufacturers think about innovation; they now focus on creating innovations that better serve patients.

In addition to these important points about patients and the people who care for them, these papers discuss topics such as interoperability and the utilisation of artificial intelligence in the diagnostic process. Organisational and operational infrastructure, such as electronic health records and other digital tools, will also be examined, as will how healthcare’s growth will continue rapidly, now with a focus on alignment, governance, and scalability across various markets and components of the healthcare system.

Finally, regulation continues to play an important role. The growing presence of health technology solutions worldwide has created a need for coherent, adaptable regulations, and stakeholders are encouraging greater collaboration to achieve sustainable progress.

Dr Dylan Attard continues to play a key role in shaping this ecosystem. From a single event in Malta to a growing global summit series, his work has helped build a trusted platform for industry exchange and collaboration, supported by a strong editorial and production team.

In essence, this edition reflects a sector defined by momentum, accountability, and a sharper focus on outcomes that matter most.

A

note from the

CEO and co-founder

It is a pleasure to welcome you to this edition of MedTech World Magazine, released alongside the MedTech North America Summit, which takes place in Florida from 11 to 13 May.

Florida has become a familiar place for me. I first visited three years ago, and what started as a straightforward trip has turned into a location I keep coming back to, both professionally and personally.

Bringing this edition here carries clear symbolism. Often regarded as the land of opportunity, North America has become a meeting point for ambition, investment, and innovation. In the context of medical technology, Florida is positioning itself as a hub where clinical expertise, entrepreneurial drive, and capital converge, increasingly shaping the MedTech landscape in North America.

For MedTech World, this summit marks an important evolution. While we have traditionally co-hosted focused, one-day gatherings across multiple markets, this event represents our first flagship multi-day summit in North America. It brings together a more structured platform for dialogue, collaboration, and deal-making across the ecosystem.

This progression reflects both growth and intent. As our global footprint expands, so does the responsibility to create consistent, high-impact environments for the communities we serve. Florida offers the right conditions for this next step, with strong infrastructure and a growing appetite for healthcare innovation.

On a personal level, I feel increasingly aligned with the state’s trajectory. The idea of spending more time in Florida feels like a natural extension of MedTech World’s direction, as we continue to connect ecosystems and enable progress in healthcare innovation.

This summit is a statement of intent. It reinforces our commitment to North America, to supporting companies exploring expansion, and to bridging international innovation with the US healthcare system. Florida is emerging as a gateway for these ambitions.

Within this magazine, you will find perspectives from across MedTech and HealthTech, reflecting the collaborative spirit that defines our work.

I look forward to welcoming many of you to MedTech North America for what promises to be a defining moment in our journey.

Rewiring

medtech capital:

Why institutional readiness now defines success

Duncan Barry speaks to DR GEORGE SYRMALIS, CEO at Bioscience Equity Partners S.A., on whether early stage medical device companies in Europe and N. America are prepared for the realities of institutional capital, and cross-border funding.

Early-stage medical device companies in Europe and North America are, candidly, underprepared for the realities of institutional capital, particularly from the Gulf. The gap is not scientific. Founders are typically rigorous in developing their technology and clinical pathways. The real deficiency is institutional.

Sovereign capital operates within a framework that is both more demanding and more strategic than traditional venture capital. It requires governance structures, documentation standards, and offering materials that meet multi-jurisdictional regulatory expectations. More importantly, it requires a clear articulation of the full capital trajectory, not just the current funding round. Too often, companies arrive prepared for a conventional venture conversation, when what is required is something closer to pre-IPO readiness.

This mismatch is emerging at a time when the traditional funding pathway for medical devices is beginning to fracture. US venture capital, long the backbone of early-stage funding, has become increasingly selective. Devices are difficult to reconcile with fund models built around ten-year cycles and software-like return profiles. Regulatory timelines are long, capital requirements are high, and reimbursement pathways remain complex.

There is a generational shift underway... from passive financial investment to active participation in healthcare transformation

Strategic corporates, meanwhile, are still active but have shifted toward acquisition rather than development. They prefer to buy de-risked assets rather than fund them through uncertainty. The result is a widening funding gap at the early and mid stages, one that is increasingly being filled by international capital with longer time horizons and more strategic mandates.

Cross-border funding, however, introduces its own complexities. Valuation remains the most persistent source of friction. US venture firms tend to rely on comparable exits and financial multiples, while sovereign investors often assess strategic value -including market access, technology transfer, and alignment with national healthcare priorities. Reconciling these perspectives requires a level of structuring sophistication that many companies and advisors simply do not possess.

Governance presents another challenge, particularly around board composition and decision-making rights. Simpler equity structures are increasingly preferred, both for clarity and for compatibility with frameworks such as Islamic finance. Complexity at this stage often leads to misalignment later.

Amid this evolving landscape, the strategic intent of Gulf capital is still widely misunderstood. There is a generational shift underway: from passive financial investment to active participation in healthcare transformation. These institutions are not operating on five-year return cycles; they are building national capability, investing in infrastructure, and positioning their economies for a post-hydrocarbon future.

Yet, many Western founders fail to engage with this shift. Those who do, who can articulate how their technology aligns with national priorities and contributes to broader healthcare ecosystems, enter a fundamentally different conversation. They are not simply raising capital; they are forming strategic partnerships.

A similar dynamic is unfolding in Asia. Institutional capital from Singapore, Japan, and China is becoming increasingly influential in global medtech. Still, many founders treat these investors opportunistically rather than strategically. This

trade sale, or licensing model - and work backward to design a connected funding pathway. Investors should be aligned across stages, and relationships should be continuous rather than transactional. The companies that adopt this approach raise capital more efficiently and with far less disruption.

One of the most opportunities lies in point-of-care emerging markets...

is a mistake. These capital sources are motivated not only by financial returns, but by access to technology, manufacturing expertise, and regulatory insight. Companies motivations are structuring more resilient and strategically aligned funding syndicates.

At the core of many funding fundamental issue: the absence of a defined end-state. Too many companies raise capital reactively, moving from round to round without a coherent long-term plan. This creates negotiating leverage, and leaves businesses vulnerable

A

well-structured capital strategy should begin with the destination - whether

In medtech, the primary risks are scientific and regulatory. These require patience, specialised knowledge, and capital structures that can accommodate uncertainty over longer timelines.

Alternative models are gaining traction. Institutional capital with longer horizons, strategic alignment, and continuous advisory involvement is proving better suited to the sector.

In terms of sector focus, international capital is gravitating toward areas where technological innovation intersects with chronic disease burden, i.e. cardiovascular devices, surgical robotics, and advanced diagnostics. Yet one of the most overlooked opportunities lies in point-ofcare diagnostics for emerging markets, where unmet need and strategic relevance are both significant.

Ultimately, the defining characteristic of successful medical device companies is no longer just scientific excellence. It is institutional maturity. And NASDAQ, although it remains the canonical exit, the path is becoming longer and more capital-intensive.

The day that changed lives and started a Medtech journey

At times, a single moment can change the course of many lives.

For KEN NELSON, partner and founder of Nelson Jennings Ventures, one such incident became the catalyst that drew him into the world of medical technology. Speaking with Duncan Barry, Nelson reflects on the moment that reshaped his path and the drive behind his commitment to the Medtech sector.

Believe it or not, the catalyst that ultimately led Ken Nelson into the MedTech industry was the tragedy of September 11, 2001, in New York City.

At the time, Nelson was working in finance for a software startup in Atlanta, watching the events unfold in real time on the internet. The moment prompted deep reflection about the kind of impact he wanted his career to have.

“This is when I decided I wanted to be more involved in making a difference in the world,” he recalls. “I wanted to be part of something that could improve, and even save lives.”

As he began exploring what that next step might look like, Nelson became fascinated by implantable pacemakers and defibrillators: technologies capable of regulating heart rhythms or delivering life-saving shocks to restore a normal heartbeat. The idea that a device could intervene so directly to save a life sparked a strong passion for the cardiac rhythm management (CRM) field.

Nelson created a five-year plan to move into sales and leadership roles at one of the major cardiac device companies Medtronic, St Jude Medical (now Abbott), or Guidant (now Boston Scientific).

Eventually, he convinced Guidant to bring him on board in Atlanta as a senior sales and pricing analyst. Over the next five years he was promoted no less than four times, transitioning into sales and later sales leadership, remaining in that role even after Guidant was acquired by Boston Scientific.

Today, Nelson channels that experience into his work at Nelson Jennings Ventures. The firm focuses on building a comprehensive cardiac start-up innovation ecosystem while supporting a select group of disruptive companies along the way. Its work revolves around consulting and investing in cardiac medical devices, digital health, and AI-enabled startups, particularly those connected to the global accelerator MedTech Innovator.

Key opportunities exist in continuous hemodynamic monitoring, remote therapeutic management, AI-driven prediction of cardiac decompensation, and closed-loop drug and device therapies.

Nelson says two experiences significantly shaped his approach to evaluating earlystage healthcare startups. The first was his time at Guidant, where he learned the importance of leadership, mentorship, and company culture. “The people building the organisation and the culture they create are the lifeblood of a startup,” he says, noting that passion, potential, and perseverance are often the strongest indicators of future success.

The second influence came in 2019 when, as CCO at Bardy Diagnostics (later acquired by Hillrom, now part of Baxter), the company was selected for the MedTech Innovator accelerator programme. Nelson later became a judge at the organisation’s global pitch events, gaining insight into how venture capital firms and strategic investors evaluate founders and emerging technologies.

Startups operating at the intersection of cardiology, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and wearable technology excite Nelson most. Companies developing AIpowered tools to detect and predict heart disease, as well as wearable therapeutic devices that challenge the standard of care in arrhythmia treatment, represent some of the most promising innovations in the field.

Nelson Jennings Ventures also benefits from Nelson’s unique perspective across several pioneering companies in cardiac digital health and remote patient monitoring.

Nelson制定了一个五年计划,旨在进入Medtronic、St Jude Medical(现属Abbott)或Guidant(现属Boston Scientific)等主要心脏设备公司的销售和领导岗位。

Over the years he has held senior commercial leadership roles at BioTelemetry (as Global VP of Sales), iRhythm Technologies (as VP of Sales and Marketing), and Bardy Diagnostics (as Chief Commercial Officer). These organisations represent three of the top four market-share leaders in cardiac digital health and remote monitoring, particularly in the development of wearable cardiac patch monitors.

Nelson says he brings practical experience to mentoring and advising early-stage founders. Nelson focuses on three defining qualities when it comes to founders: passion, potential, and perseverance. One of the most common mistakes when pitching is failing to communicate genuine passion for the problem being solved. Founders also sometimes overlook critical business fundamentals.

Several areas in Medtech remain underserved by both capital and technological development. One of the most significant is heart failure and cardio-renal metabolic disease. Around seven million people in the United States live with heart failure, a number that continues to grow alongside rising hospitalisation and readmission costs.

“Key opportunities exist in continuous hemodynamic monitoring, remote therapeutic management, AI-driven prediction of cardiac decompensation, and closed-loop drug and device therapies,” he says.

Nelson also points to iRhythm Technologies as an example of how startups can evolve significantly from their original thesis. During his time there, he helped build the team that launched the Zio Patch, a wearable cardiac monitoring device designed as a more patient-friendly alternative to the traditional 24-48 hour wired Holter monitor. While the company initially focused on hardware innovation, it soon realized the real value lay in the data platform and diagnostic services built around the device. The company pivoted toward a fullservice model combining wearable monitoring with AI-assisted ECG analysis and physician reporting, turning data and diagnostic insights into its true competitive advantage.

Bardy

Diagnostics(后被Hillrom收购,现为Baxter的一部 分)的首席商务官,该公司入选了医疗科技创新孵化 项目。

Investing in the future of medicine, one breakthrough at a time

At the forefront of healthcare innovation, Cleveland Clinic Innovations is turning caregivers’ bold ideas into life-changing solutions. As Executive Director of Investments and Ventures at Cleveland Clinic Innovations, JD FRIEDLAND plays a key role in this strategy, leading a team that transforms discoveries from hospital labs into thriving startups, licensed technologies, and strategic partnerships - all with one goal: improving patient care worldwide. Duncan Barry investigates.

Since Cleveland Clinic Innovations was founded in 2000, its mission has been to take ideas sparked by medical professionals and turn them into products, patents, companies, and beyond. Friedland oversees the Ventures team, which identifies emerging, transformational innovations originating inside and outside Cleveland Clinic. These ideas often become partnerships with companies, where Cleveland Clinic licenses technology and receives an ownership stake. Innovations also creates startup companies,

We aim to build a portfolio of solutions that can create a multiplier effect through the capital we deploy.

licensing intellectual property to these ventures, and invests in these startups and outside companies that form strategic collaborations with Cleveland Clinic.

Friedland’s team supports each venture’s success, often serving as board members, observers or advisors. They collaborate closely with management teams to raise external capital, provide coaching, navigate challenges, and drive clinical advancement, commercial adoption, and highvalue exits. “We aim to build a portfolio of solutions that

can create a multiplier effect through the capital we deploy,” Friedland explains. The Innovations model generates value in multiple ways: advancing patient care, often establishing Cleveland Clinic as a customer, co-developing solutions, licensing technology, and investing in companies.

Friedland’s journey into healthcare innovation began on Wall Street as an equity research analyst covering biotechnology and medical device stocks. He later worked as an investment banker, helping companies raise capital and explore M&A alternatives, and later joined Henry Schein, a healthcare solutions company. Before coming to Cleveland Clinic, he worked at a private equity firm focused on advancing highpotential healthcare opportunities. A friend at Cleveland Clinic Innovations encouraged him to consider relocating from New York, and Friedland saw it as a chance to work at one of the leading organisations in healthcare. Collaborating with clinical leaders like Drs. Andre Machado, Frank Papay, Samir Kapadia, and Jose Navia sealed the decision. “I’m now about to celebrate my five-year anniversary, and it’s gone by in a flash,” he reflects.

Collaboration with clinical inventors and researchers is central to Innovations’ work. Engagement partners guide caregivers through submitting invention disclosures, the first step in advancing an idea into licensable intellectual property. From ideation, patenting, prototyping, preclinical and clinical data collection, to licensing, specialised teams support each stage while maintaining close contact with inventors. Some inventors remain deeply involved, like Dr. Machado, who continues to shape technologies related to deep brain stimulation for stroke. Cleveland Clinic’s intellectual property policy allows inventors to share in potential licensing economics, creating a recruitment and retention advantage for clinicians and researchers to focus on their core jobs, while working with Innovations to turn their ideas into transformational healthcare solutions.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly a “force multiplier” in clinical innovation. Cleveland Clinic has been on the forefront of utilizing AI to support its mission of being the best place to receive care and a top place to work in healthcare.. One example is Ambience’s AI platform, which documents patient appointments and generates medical notes for provider approval. the platform also creates customised after-visit summaries for patients and families, reducing administrative burden and enriching patient experience.

Friedland notes that strategic collaborations in AI are expanding rapidly, and Cleveland Clinic is focused on bringing unique value to the table, with its robust data sets, deep clinical insights and expertise. “These assets allow us to co-develop solutions that

The work we do at Cleveland Clinic Innovations really speaks to all of Cleveland Clinic’s values - serve with heart, succeed as one team, and shape the future.

are not only cutting-edge but also deeply aligned with the needs of patients and providers,” Friedland says.

Balancing scientific rigor with business considerations is seamless at Cleveland Clinic because of its ecosystem of expert clinicians and researchers. Innovations provides intellectual property management, strategic licensing, and startup incubation support, while Cleveland Clinic researchers and clinicians offer real-world scientific insights and resources for clinical validation. “I don’t have to be the smartest bioethicist, interventional cardiologist, and orthopedic surgeon in the world. We have all those experts at Cleveland Clinic, and they help us,” Friedland says.

The most rewarding aspect of medical technology commercialisation, according to Friedland, is witnessing the impact on patients. For example, portfolio companies like Enspire DBS Therapy help stroke patients restore arm motor function through deep brain stimulation. Seeing patient outcomes firsthand reinforces the “why” behind Innovations’ work: identifying transformational opportunities that expand access, deliver better care, and enhance experiences for patients and caregivers.

MediView, a Cleveland Clinic portfolio company that uses augmented reality to aid in surgical navigation, is an example of a long-term successful collaboration. [1] The technology behind MediView’s XR90 started with Cleveland Clinic intellectual property and enables proceduralists to visualise a patient’s anatomy in 3D augmented reality during minimally invasive procedures. Initially applied in interventional radiology, the technology now spans multiple specialties. Proximity to the company within Innovations’ incubator space fosters frequent interactions and maintains strong relationships, while investors and partners work together closely to advance the technology.

Maintaining resilience and long-term focus is achieved through structured planning. Annual retreats help align the team on strategic objectives. These meetings examine five-year goals, mediumterm plans over the next 18 months to two years, and short-term annual objectives, ensuring both vision and execution remain

on track. Under the leadership of Chief of Innovations Dr. Geoff Vince, the team has increased invention-to-license translations, attracted new inventors, and expanded investments in portfolio companies through datadriven processes and measurable objectives.

At its core, Cleveland Clinic Innovations exemplifies a comprehensive approach to healthcare advancement. By combining clinical insight, strategic investment, licensing expertise, and entrepreneurial rigor, the organisation transforms breakthrough ideas into tangible solutions that improve patient care around the world. Cleveland Clinic Innovations’ work demonstrates how one institution can leverage its expertise, partnerships, and capital to shape the future of medicine - one breakthrough at a time.

“The work we do at Cleveland Clinic Innovations really speaks to all of Cleveland Clinic’s values - serve with heart, succeed as one team, and shape the future”, says Friedland. “Ultimately, we’re identifying transformational opportunities that are going to expand access, deliver better care, create a better experience for patients and caregivers, and bring the best possible care to the greatest number of people. That’s incredibly rewarding.

Turning a personal ordeal into a cybersecurity mission

In early 2022, CHRISTIAN ESPINOSA had six blood clots in his left leg, and it nearly killed him. It forced him into a headspace he had never been in before. He was not thinking about career goals or business goals. He was thinking: “Am I going to make it?” Medtech speaks with the Founder and CEO of Blue Goat Cyber and best-selling author of ‘The Smartest Person in the Room: The Root Cause and New Solution for Cybersecurity’.

“A portable Doppler ultrasound device played a key role in getting me diagnosed quickly enough to survive. That is when “security” stopped being a technical term. It became a trust issue,” Christian started to recount.

“When you are looking at something that might save your life, you realise fast that reliability is everything. Accuracy matters. Uptime matters. Integrity matters. You need that technology to work the way it was intended, when it is supposed to, in a real clinical environment.

“That experience rewired how I define cybersecurity in healthcare. If someone can disrupt a device, alter its performance, tamper with its output, or take it offline, the impact is not just data loss or downtime.

The goal isn’t to ‘pass cybersecurity’. It is to defend the device in the field.

Cybersecurity becomes patient safety. That is the origin of Blue Goat Cyber. I did not start it because I wanted to write more reports. I started it because I realized medical devices deserve the same seriousness we apply to safety engineering, and security is part of that.”

How did your personal experience transform cybersecurity from a technical discipline into something deeply human?

“That health scare made everything human, fast. You stop thinking in frameworks and start thinking in consequences. It made me ask a simple question that a lot of teams do not ask early enough: what happens to a patient if this device is wrong, unavailable, or manipulated?

“The gap I saw in MedTech is that cybersecurity often lives in the wrong place on the timeline. Too many companies treat it as a late-stage documentation exercise right before submission. Then it turns into panic. Engineering is stuck defending design decisions that were never made with security assumptions in mind. Regulatory is trying to tell a coherent story using evidence that was not created to support that story.

“Blue Goat Cyber exists to close that gap by helping manufacturers build cybersecurity into the product from day one and maintain it through the lifecycle. That means aligning engineering reality with what regulators expect to see: secure design practices, security risk management, credible testing evidence, and a plan to monitor and respond after launch.”

Climbing the Cybersecurity mountain

It goes without saying after having read the first part of this interview that Blue Goat Cyber reflects the founder’s personal philosophy as much as the company’s mission. An avid mountain climber, he says the “goat” symbolises the patience, balance and discipline needed to navigate steep terrain, much like medical device cybersecurity and regulatory requirements.

“The climb is real,” he explains. “You don’t get through it by sprinting and hoping. You get through it by taking the right route and keeping your footing.”

The “blue” represents the calm mindset needed in high-stakes situations: slowing down, thinking clearly and making defensible decisions, an approach the firm applies to cybersecurity strategy.

Security that works in theory but fails in a real hospital environment isn’t security.

Blue Goat Cyber supported the Malta MedTech World Startup Pitch Competition, an initiative aimed at encouraging secure innovation among emerging medical technology companies.

The firm believes start-up competitions play a crucial role in shaping early design habits.

“If founders understand from the beginning that cybersecurity is part of product strategy, it becomes part of design and quality,” he says. “If it comes later, it turns into a scramble, and in MedTech that leads to delays, rework and trust issues.”

When evaluating startups, the company looks for several signals: whether products are designed for real hospital environments, how responsibly connectivity is handled, and whether security claims are backed by evidence such as threat modeling and software component inventories. Long-term life-cycle thinking, including monitoring and vulnerability response, is another key factor.

The cost of ignoring security

Treating cybersecurity as an afterthought can have serious consequences. Beyond regulatory complications, it can create patient safety risks and operational disruption.

“Late cybersecurity fixes create inconsistencies between the architecture, risk analysis and testing story,” he explains. “Regulators notice those gaps.”

Companies also risk post-market problems if they lack systems to monitor vulnerabilities and respond quickly once devices are deployed.

For Blue Goat Cyber, the solution is integrating cybersecurity from the earliest design stage through the entire product life-cycle.

“Early is when you still have choices,” he says. Early planning allows manufacturers to build secure architectures, define trust boundaries and design update mechanisms that work in real healthcare environments.

With connected medical devices deployed worldwide, cybersecurity has become a global responsibility.

“Devices ship everywhere and hospitals share expectations,” he says. “Security that works in theory but fails in a real hospital environment isn’t security.”

As connectivity and artificial intelligence expand in healthcare technology, manufacturers must adopt disciplined approaches to access control, monitoring, secure updates and lifecycle risk management.

“The goal isn’t to ‘pass cybersecurity’. It is to defend the device in the field.”

DUNCAN BARRY:

Blue Goat Cyber

For many patients, the impact of effective airway clearance goes beyond better clinical outcomes, it provides freedom to live life to the fullest, without being sidelined by their condition.

Breathing innovation:

How Synchrony Medical is transforming at-home respiratory care

In this MedTech World feature, Synchrony Medical CEO ANAT SHANI discusses with Duncan Barry the inspiration behind LibAirty, a breakthrough digital airway clearance system, and how patient-centric innovation is reshaping chronic lung disease management.

For Anat Shani, the path into healthcare innovation was clear from the outset. With a background in biomedical engineering, Shani entered the MedTech sector driven by a desire to combine technical expertise with real-world impact. Early experience in research and development roles, followed by an MBA focused on innovation and entrepreneurship, laid the foundation for her to lead a MedTech startup from ideation into its current early commercial growth phase.

Synchrony Medical was founded during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in collaboration with leading clinicians from Sheba Medical Center, including Prof. Ori Efrati, Dr Moshe Ashkenazi and Gil Sokol. While the global health crisis accelerated the urgency for remote care solutions, it also exposed long-standing gaps in respiratory treatment - particularly for patients managing chronic lung diseases at home. The founding team set out to address a critical

challenge: enabling patients with chronic respiratory disease to independently manage their condition through effective airway clearance therapy.

Airway clearance is a cornerstone of treatment for conditions such as bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis. The process involves removing mucus from the lungs, reducing infection risks, improving breathing, and slowing disease progression. However, some existing methods require significant training or clinical supervision, making consistent, effective treatment difficult to maintain outside healthcare settings.

“Airway clearance can be achieved through a variety of techniques that aim to loosen, move and expel sticky mucus from the lungs. The challenge is that airway clearance devices need to be both effective enough to deliver clinically meaningful results and practical enough for patients to self-administer independently at home on a daily basis,” Shani explained.

Shani walked Medtech World Magazine through how LibAirty works, and what inspired its creation.

“Synchrony’s solution, LibAirty, represents a significant step forward. The FDA-cleared system combines app-guided breathing exercises with targeted chest compressions delivered through an inflatable vest. Inspired by the clinically proven technique of Autogenic Drainage, LibAirty translates complex, therapist-led methods into a user-friendly, at-home solution.

“During therapy sessions, patients are guided through controlled breathing patterns via a mobile app, while the vest delivers synchronized compressions. This coordinated approach aims to mobilize mucus from the smaller, hardest to clear, airways, facilitating thorough lung clearance during each session. By acting as a ‘digital therapist,’ the system empowers patients to perform high-quality therapy independently on a daily basis.”

The development of LibAirty was deeply shaped by close collaboration with clinicians and patients alike. Insights from respiratory specialists ensured that the device’s design was grounded in physiological principles, while patient feedback helped refine its usability and comfort, two factors essential for long-term adherence.

Clinical data has been promising. Studies conducted at Sheba Medical Center and the Medical University of South Carolina showed that patients using LibAirty were able to clear twice the amount of mucus compared to traditional vest-based therapies, while also reporting higher levels of comfort and satisfaction. Since its commercial launch in the United States in late 2025,

Medical

在MedTech World的专

Synchrony

real-world feedback has echoed these findings, with patients reporting reduced coughing, improved sleep, and a better overall quality of life.

"For many patients, the impact of effective airway clearance goes beyond better clinical outcomes, it provides freedom to live life to the fullest, without being sidelined by their condition,” she told Medtech World.

Beyond individual outcomes, the technology also addresses broader systemic challenges. With healthcare systems under increasing pressure and a shortage of respiratory therapists, solutions like LibAirty extend expert care into the home. By empowering patients to manage their conditions independently, such innovations have the potential to reduce hospitalizations and ease long-term healthcare costs.

Looking ahead, Shani sees digital health driving a shift toward more connected, home-based care. Enabled by advanced technology, the home becomes the primary setting for treatment, supported by data-driven insights and personalized care. This approach not only improves accessibility but also enables earlier intervention and more proactive disease management.

At its core, Synchrony Medical’s vision is to redefine the standard of care for chronic respiratory diseases. By making effective, independent therapy widely accessible, the company aims to give patients greater control over their health, and, ultimately, a better quality of life.

With LibAirty already making an impact, the focus now turns to scaling its reach, as Synchrony Medical works toward transforming respiratory care for millions worldwide.

Synchrony Medical

Navigating legal strategy and growth in life sciences startups

From commercialization pathways to regulatory compliance and investment trends, JOHN SHIRE, Co-Chair, Health Care & Life Sciences at Cozen O’Connor, outlines the critical legal considerations shaping success in the health care and life sciences sector.

For founders entering the life sciences space, legal strategy can be the difference between rapid growth and costly missteps. According to John, the most critical issues at launch revolve around market pathway and commercialization.

“Specifically, this means understanding how the company penetrates the market, how the company changes the market, and the exit strategy,” he explained.

Knowing the answer to this can make the difference between

a high road to nowhere, and a 10X return.

“Early-stage life sciences companies need to get several foundational issues right simultaneously: corporate structure, intellectual property ownership, regulatory strategy, and capital formation. From day one, founders should ensure IP is properly assigned, regulatory pathways are understood, and compliance obligations are baked into the business plan, not treated as an afterthought.

The regulations are currently onerous and can create unnecessary trip wires. This is an issue that we continuously monitor, and that is as much as we can do now.

“We regularly help startups balance speed to market with regulatory discipline so early missteps don’t derail later growth or investment rounds,” John told MedTech World.

Legal and regulatory implications of stablecoin use in health care

John said that the firm would caution against stablecoin use, when asked by MedTech World.

“The regulations are currently onerous and can create unnecessary trip wires. This is an issue that we continuously monitor, and that is as much as we can do now.

“Stablecoins raise complex issues at the intersection of financial regulation, fraud and abuse laws, data security, and reimbursement compliance. In health care, the risks are amplified because of heightened scrutiny around payments, inducements, and transparency,” he said.

Turning to European health care regulation, John said that it tends to be more centralized and prescriptive, particularly around data protection, medical devices, and reimbursement while the US system is more fragmented but enforcementdriven, with overlapping federal and state regimes.

Deterring how a software qualifies as a medical device under FDA rules

The analysis focuses on intended use and functionality. Software that

diagnoses, treats, or influences clinical decision-making may fall within FDA oversight, while administrative or wellness tools generally do not.

“We help clients assess risk; document intended use and determine appropriate regulatory pathways without over-regulating innovative products unnecessarily,” he explained.

We regularly help startups balance speed to market with regulatory discipline so early missteps don’t derail later growth or

investment rounds.

What are the current trends in health care and life sciences investing?

When it comes to sector investment trends, AI driven clinical outcomes that produce fewer invasive modalities, better mortality, and drive costs down are the current focus.

“Investors are focused on technologies that improve efficiency, generate realworld evidence, or integrate into existing care delivery models. There is also heightened diligence around regulatory risk, reimbursement sustainability, and data

governance. Companies that can demonstrate regulatory clarity and commercial discipline tend to attract stronger interest,” John highlighted.

Key intellectual property issues in life sciences innovation

The biggest issue is global patent prosecution since the commercialization path needs to tie directly to the footprint.

“Clear IP ownership is critical, particularly where development involves universities, research institutions, or collaborative partners. Companies also need to think beyond patents to trade secrets, data rights, and freedom-to-operate analyses. We regularly help clients align IP strategy with financing, licensing, and exit planning,” he said.

Data privacy laws meanwhile add a layer of complexity to day-to-day operations. Health care organizations operate under some of the most complex data privacy regimes in the world.

Beyond HIPAA, companies must contend with state privacy laws, cybersecurity expectations, and crossborder data issues.

But John emphasized that strong governance and contractual controls are essential to managing risk while still allowing data-driven innovation.

Legal risks in health care transactions and private equity investments

“The high-level issues hinge on commercial pathways, adoption, and market sentiment. Additional risks are triggered by compliance, oversight and industry activities having nothing to do with the target.

“Regulatory compliance, reimbursement exposure, and governance issues are top concerns. Buyers must assess not only historical compliance, but whether the business model is sustainable under evolving enforcement priorities.

“Our team regularly supports transactions by integrating regulatory diligence with deal structuring and postclose compliance planning,” he explained.

Impact of government regulations

Regulations add governance structure, time and expense to all operations across all clinical and life sciences industries.

More than 50% of all work in the space is driven by government regulations:

“The key is not just understanding the rules but anticipating how agencies will enforce them. We help clients stay ahead of regulatory shifts so they can adapt strategically, not reactively,” he concluded.

Cozen O’Connor

JOHN SHIRE

Inside MedTech’s golden age

SV Health’s Greg Madden on the sector’s future

GREG MADDEN, Managing Partner at SV Health Investors, speaks to Duncan Barry about what led him to the medical technology investment sector and why he believes the industry is entering a transformative era.

Long before he was investing in medical technology companies, Greg Madden was working on the hospital floor.

The Managing Partner at Boston-based SV Health Investors first stepped into healthcare during his school years, washing dishes in a hospital cafeteria. It was not glamorous work, but it offered an early glimpse into the pace and pressures of hospital life. Later, he took a job as a security guard at the same hospital, bringing him even closer to the realities of the healthcare system.

Healthcare, he says, was never far from his life.

His mother worked as a nurse, while his father was a healthcare information systems consultant. Conversations about hospitals, patients and the evolving medical landscape were common in the Madden household.

“Healthcare found me, but it was inevitable,” he said.

Those early experiences shaped his understanding of the sector from both personal and professional perspectives, long before he entered the world of healthcare investing.

Building a career at SV Health

Madden joined SV Health Investors in 2002 at a pivotal moment for the firm. The investment group was being spun out of asset management giant Schroders plc, creating an opportunity to build a new, independent healthcare investment platform.

Starting out as an analyst, Madden quickly found himself working across a wide range of projects within the organisation.

“In the early years, I was a bit of a jack of all trades,” he said. “When you’re part of a small team building a firm from the ground up, you have the opportunity to touch almost every aspect of the business.”

Over time, he gravitated toward medical technology, an area that increasingly captured his interest because of its combination of engineering innovation, clinical impact and commercial opportunity.

Madden credits much of his professional development to the culture of mentorship at SV Health, particularly the influence of the firm’s former chief executive, Jim Garvey.

“I was fortunate to join a new firm on the ground floor,” Madden said. “My mentor and former firm CEO, Jim Garvey, strongly believed in an apprenticeship model and the value of learning on the job. Being naturally driven and intellectually curious, I thrived in that environment.”

More than two decades later, Madden now leads SV Health’s medical technology investment strategy, guiding the firm’s approach to identifying and scaling promising companies across the sector.

A growing market opportunity

He is doing so at a time when the medical technology industry is entering a significant growth phase.

The global medical device market alone is projected to exceed $1 trillion by 2034, driven largely by demographic trends such as ageing populations and the rising incidence of chronic disease. Conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and musculoskeletal disorders are becoming more prevalent as populations age, increasing demand for innovative medical solutions.

“That 6-7% annual growth is based purely on demographics,” Madden explained. “If you add digital health and the expansion of IoTdriven remote patient monitoring, you could effectively triple that market opportunity.”

The growing convergence of digital technologies, advanced sensors and data-driven healthcare tools is reshaping how care is delivered and monitored. According to Madden, these developments are creating opportunities for entirely new healthcare models.

“We’re at the start of a golden age of technology-driven healthcare transformation,” he said.

SV Health Investors has historically invested across venture capital, growth equity and buyout strategies. Over the past decade, however, the firm’s flagship funds have increasingly focused on growth and buyout investments, in all healthcare segments other than biotechnology.

“Our track record shows that by waiting until medical technology companies achieve scaling revenue, we can generate the same investment multiple roughly twice as fast while taking significantly less risk,” he said.

“The large strategic acquirers have become significantly bigger over the last 15 years,” Madden noted. “They’re now often looking at laterstage companies with established revenue streams rather than earlier-stage ventures.”

“We generally aim to invest about three to five years before the large strategic acquirers are likely to step in,” he explained.

When evaluating potential investments, SV Health looks for several defining characteristics.

Strong leadership teams are a critical factor, along with large addressable markets and technologies capable of delivering measurable value within healthcare systems.

“We focus on value creation across three groups,” Madden explained. “Patients, through improved clinical outcomes; physicians, through efficiency and time savings; and payers, through demonstrable cost reductions.”

This framework reflects the complex ecosystem that shapes healthcare adoption. A new medical technology must not only demonstrate clinical effectiveness but also fit into physician workflows and deliver clear economic value.

“If you can align incentives across those stakeholders, adoption tends to follow,” Madden said.

A diamond in the rough

One example of this investment philosophy is OptiMesh, a spinal fusion technology developed by Spineology, a company in SV Health’s portfolio.

Spinal fusion is one of the most common surgical procedures in the United States, used to stabilise vertebrae and reduce pain caused by spinal instability or degenerative conditions.

When SV Health first encountered the OptiMesh technology in 2024, Madden described it as an innovative product that had not yet fully realised its commercial potential.

Despite strong potential to improve outcomes for patients while delivering benefits for physicians and healthcare payers, the technology was housed within a company that had historically struggled to scale.

“When we first encountered the technology in 2024, it was incredibly promising but sitting inside a company that hadn’t yet unlocked its potential,” Madden said.

The situation changed after Spineology appointed a new chief executive, Brian Snider, who brought renewed focus and operational discipline to the company.

It has now recorded four consecutive quarters of revenue growth above 20%, alongside the introduction of new implant technologies designed to promote bone growth and restore more natural spinal alignment.

Addressing healthcare’s biggest challenges

Looking ahead, Madden believes medical technology will play a central role in addressing some of healthcare’s most pressing structural challenges, particularly rising costs and workforce shortages.

“Medtech can help in three key ways,” he said.

“First, devices often aim for definitive interventions rather than lifelong treatments. Second, minimally invasive tools shorten procedure and recovery times. And third, the AI revolution will depend heavily on high-quality clinical data generated by medical devices and sensors.”

Technologies such as minimally invasive surgical tools, clinicalgrade wearable devices and AI-enabled healthcare platforms are already gaining traction across global healthcare systems.

“Honestly, all of them excite me,” Madden said. “Each represents a multi-billion-dollar opportunity growing at 20-30% annually.”

Virtual care and remote patient monitoring

Virtual care platforms and remote patient monitoring technologies are also expected to play an increasingly important role in healthcare delivery.

“Virtual care is fundamentally about accessibility,” Madden said.

“In the US, many people struggle to access consistent healthcare because of geography, transport limitations or work schedules. Telehealth can significantly extend the reach of the system.”

Remote patient monitoring tools offer additional benefits by allowing clinicians to track patient health outside traditional clinical settings.

Ultimately, Madden believes both venture and growth investors will play a crucial role in shaping the future of healthcare innovation.

By providing capital, strategic guidance and operational support, investors can help bring promising technologies from development to widespread adoption.

“The opportunity is enormous,” he said. “Medical technology will be critical to addressing labour shortages, access challenges and the unsustainable cost pressures facing healthcare systems.”

For Madden, the stakes extend far beyond financial returns.

“The stakes are high,” he added.

“The cost of failure isn’t just financial—it affects patients, health systems and the long-term sustainability of our economies.”

As technology and medicine continue to converge, he believes the medical technology sector will remain one of the most important drivers of change in global healthcare.

Closing the gap:

How Vivasure Medical reinvented vascular closure

More than a decade ago in Galway, Ireland, an entrepreneur and doctor spotted a problem hiding in plain sight inside one of medicine’s fastest-growing fields. Duncan Barry interviews Vivasure Medical’s CEO ANDREW GLASS on what sparked the creation of Vivasure.

Cardiovascular procedures became increasingly minimally invasive, physicians were replacing open surgery with catheterbased treatments performed through the femoral artery in the leg. Procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and aneurysm repair were transforming patient care.

But they left behind a stubborn challenge.

The devices used in these procedures require large access holes in major blood vessels - holes that are far larger than those used in traditional catheter procedures. Closing them safely and reliably had become one of the most common complications physicians faced.

That challenge sparked the creation of Vivasure Medical.

A startup born in Ireland’s Medtech ecosystem

Vivasure Medical was co-founded in Galway by Mr Ger Brett and Dr Chris Martin, both seasoned entrepreneurs with experience building startups in the medical technology sector. They saw the opportunity to create a simpler, more effective solution for large-hole vascular closure, one that could improve outcomes for both patients and physicians.

Over the past two decades, Ireland has emerged as one of the world’s leading hubs for medical device innovation and manufacturing.

And Ireland proved to be the ideal launchpad.

Mr Glass said: “Over the past two decades, the country has emerged as one of the world’s leading hubs for medical device innovation and manufacturing. Many of the largest global medtech companies operate major facilities there, creating a deep talent pool in engineering, R&D, and advanced manufacturing.

“Vivasure tapped into that ecosystem to build a team capable of taking an ambitious idea from concept to clinic.”

Reinventing how arteries heal

Traditional closure technologies typically rely on either suturebased systems or collagen plugs to seal vascular access sites. While widely used, both approaches have limitations and have been associated with complication rates in complex procedures.

Vivasure took a different path.

Its flagship technology, PerQseal®, uses a fully bioabsorbable patch placed inside the vessel. The patch covers the access hole created during the procedure and is anchored to the vessel wall.

Over time, the body heals over the patch and the material is gradually absorbed, leaving nothing behind. The concept is elegantly simple: restore the artery to its original healthy state, rather than leaving permanent implants.

Vivasure

The device also offers another practical advantage for physicians. Unlike some competing systems, it requires no preparation before the procedure begins, allowing clinicians to simply deploy the device when the intervention is complete.

In medical technology, particularly with Class III medical devices, the highestrisk category, innovation must operate within a strict framework of regulatory and quality requirements.

“From the beginning, Vivasure placed patient safety and regulatory rigour at the core of its mission.

“Clinical evidence has been central to the company’s strategy. Beyond demonstrating safety and efficacy, the company also focused on improving the real-world clinical experience, including ease of use, speed, and efficiency in hospital settings,” Mr Glass explained.

In medtech, strong clinical trial results alone rarely guarantee success.

Adoption often depends on how seamlessly a device fits into the workflow of busy operating rooms and catheter labs: “Vivasure built its development philosophy around rapid feedback loops with physicians, continuously refining the device based on real clinical use,” he said.

As Vivasure advanced toward commercialisation, the company faced one of the most

challenging phases in the life cycle of any medical device startup: funding and executing a US pivotal clinical trial.

A proud moment

The company raised more than €50 million in a Series D financing round, led by Haemonetics. The funding enabled Vivasure to launch its US IDE pivotal trial while simultaneously continuing development of next-generation products.

The timing, however, was far from ideal.

“The effort unfolded during the COVID-19 pandemic, when fundraising conditions were volatile and global supply chains were under strain.

“Despite those challenges, a relatively small global team coordinated the clinical study while continuing product development, an effort leadership describes as one of the company’s proudest achievements,” Mr Glass said.

As part of the investment, the company received an exclusive option to acquire Vivasure upon reaching certain milestones. After several years of collaboration, Haemonetics exercised that option in late 2025.

The acquisition closed in January in a €185 million transaction, marking a significant milestone for the Galway-based startup.

In an industry where innovation can take years to reach the

bedside, Vivasure’s journey illustrates how a focused clinical insight, paired with disciplined engineering and regulatory execution, can translate into technology that changes the standard of care.

And sometimes, solving one of medicine’s biggest challenges starts with something surprisingly small.

A hole that needs closing.

From the beginning, Vivasure placed patient safety and regulatory rigour at the core of its mission.

Wound up for change: Adtec Healthcare’s plasma-powered revolution in infection care

In the evolving landscape of medical technology, few innovations carry the promise of transforming infection management as profoundly as cold plasma therapy. At the forefront of this is MARY MCGOVERN, CEO of Adtec Healthcare, whose journey from plasma technology engineering to medtech leadership reflects both persistence and vision. As antimicrobial resistance continues to rise globally, innovations like Adtec’s Premium Cold Plasma may become an essential part of the healthcare toolkit.

“My career began at Adtec Plasma Technology in Japan, where I immersed myself in the technical foundations of plasma-based systems. Working across product design, manufacturing and business development, I helped deliver plasma solutions for the semiconductor and solar manufacturing industries.

“During those early years, I negotiated and managed the company’s first overseas multi-million-dollar customer projects in the United States and Europe,” she recounted, an experience that would later shape her entrepreneurial ambitions.

In the early 2000s, McGovern founded Adtec Europe Ltd to launch the company’s semiconductor and solar businesses across the European market. But as the technology evolved, a new possibility began to emerge. Plasma, long used in industrial manufacturing, showed potential far beyond factories and cleanrooms. McGovern and her team began investing in research and development to explore how plasma technology could be applied to healthcare.

Duncan Barry:

By physically destroying bacteria rather than relying on antibiotics, the technology avoids the cycle of resistance that often undermines conventional treatments.

Those early years required patience. Scientific validation, laboratory testing and clinical trials were essential to demonstrate both safety and therapeutic value. As the evidence base grew, the opportunity became clear: plasma could address one of healthcare’s most persistent challenges: infection.

The result was the creation of Adtec Healthcare, a spinout dedicated to advancing medical applications of plasma technology. At the centre of its innovation is the SteriPlas Premium Cold Plasma device, which is now used across the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The technology offers clinicians a new tool in the fight against infection, particularly in chronic and complex wounds.

Unlike traditional antimicrobial treatments that rely on antibiotics or chemical agents, Premium Cold Plasma works through a physical mechanism. The SteriPlas system generates a dense field of reactive plasma that destroys bacteria directly, including multi-drug-resistant

strains and biofilm structures that are notoriously difficult to treat.

For clinicians confronting the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance, this approach represents a significant shift. “By physically destroying bacteria rather than relying on antibiotics, the technology avoids the cycle of resistance that often undermines conventional treatments,” McGovern explains.

The real-world results have been striking. Thousands of clinical treatments have now been carried out using the SteriPlas system, supported by a growing body of peer-reviewed research. What has impressed McGovern most is the speed at which some chronic wounds respond, particularly in cases where conventional therapies have failed.

Complex wounds that once resisted treatment are showing improvement, as plasma disrupts bacterial colonies and biofilms that prevent healing. Because the mechanism is physical rather than pharmaceutical,

the therapy also prevents both primary and secondary resistance from developing.

With clinical adoption increasing, Adtec Healthcare recently secured a $12 million investment to support its global expansion. The company’s immediate focus is strengthening its presence across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia, while also preparing for one of the most significant milestones in its roadmap: entry into the United States market as Adtec awaits FDA clearance.

Achieving European Medical Device Regulation (MDR) certification for SteriPlas was a major step forward. The rigorous regulatory approval reinforces the device’s safety, quality and clinical value, while opening doors to broader adoption across European healthcare systems.

Beyond wound care, the company is also investigating new applications for its plasma technology. One promising area is postoperative implant treatment, where infection remains a serious risk. Early research is exploring how SteriPlas could reduce infection rates and improve recovery outcomes in patients with implanted devices. The technology is already being studied in the context of large-scale infection management associated with LVAD implants and catheterrelated infections, supported

by clinical evidence from multiple countries.

The company’s roots trace back more than four decades to plasma engineering in Japan, expertise that has been refined and translated into medical innovation.

“Our microwave-generated Cold Plasma has been engineered to deliver treatment safely, reliably and consistently,” McGovern says. “Across two decades of clinical use, there have been no reported side effects.”

Modern clinical research has enabled the development of a particularly dense and stable plasma field, one capable of penetrating deeper into chronic infections rather than just treating surface bacteria.

For McGovern, the mission remains clear: bring a powerful new infection-control technology into everyday clinical practice and improve outcomes for patients worldwide, most especially as bacteria grow more resistant.

What’s in for patients

“Efficient surgery is good for patients and hospitals. Medtronic surgical technologies, and our commitment to training, service, and support for OR teams, have contributed to enhanced procedural efficiency across modalities for decades,” Rajit explained.

“The Hugo™ RAS system and our partnership to build and grow robotic programs extend the value we offer to customers. This is more important than ever as U.S. hospitals seek to manage capacity challenges, economic and staffing pressures, and an aging population and higher burden of disease,” he told Medtech World.

Within the OR, Hugo's modular design provides surgeons flexibility to adapt their approach to meet the needs of each procedure and patient. The portable robotic arms also move easily to optimize scheduling and help reduce downtime between cases.

The importance of flexibility

Medtronic thinks about flexibility in a few ways. It starts with providing surgeons and hospitals choice in technology and partnership across all modalities of surgery, open, laparoscopic, and roboticassisted. Today, Medtronic is the only company able to deliver that value to customers.

“Within surgery, each patient is unique. Hugo's modular architecture and multiquadrant access give surgeons the ability to optimize the procedure based on what the case demands. That flexibility also means one system can handle a variety of procedures and mobility means it can be used in different ORs,” Rajit highlighted.

Robotic-assisted surgery adoption is growing, but there’s still a massive opportunity to reach more patients.

Today, more than half of the 60 million soft-tissue surgeries performed globally each year are done as open procedures. That’s more than 30 million patients who don’t have access to the benefits of minimally invasive surgery such as fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and faster recoveries. Robotic and digital technologies like the Hugo™ RAS system and Touch Surgery™ ecosystem are helping to bring the benefits of minimally invasive surgery to more patients in more places. Today, the Hugo™ RAS system is in clinical use in more than 35 countries across five continents.

Rajit said scaling robotics requires significant investment, noting that Medtronic is doing so from a place of strength given its global leadership in surgery.

“You’re not just selling a robot. With Medtronic, we are offering a partnership backed by a commitment to training,

support, and service to help our customers achieve their goals. Together, our differentiated technology and approach to partnership, including the flexibility of multiple acquisition models, are designed to overcome barriers to broader adoption, so more patients have access to roboticassisted surgery,” he said.

Within surgery, each patient is unique.
Hugo's modular architecture and multiquadrant access give surgeons the ability to optimize the procedure based on what the case demands.

A catalyst for innovation

In this Medtech World Q&A interview, the AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION’S CENTER FOR HEALTH TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION outlines its mission to bridge science and technology, sharing insights into how AI, digital health, and collaborative ecosystems are driving a shift towards more proactive and patient-centred care.

The Center for Health and Technology and Innovation operates at the intersection of science and technology. How would you describe its core mission in today’s evolving healthcare landscape?

For 100 hundred years, the American Heart Association has been a catalyst for innovation, driven by our founder’s belief in the transformative power of science and research.

Now, in our second century, the Association is driving a new era of health innovation, where trusted science, patient-centered technology and measurable clinical outcomes come together to transform care and improve lives for all.

The Center for Health Technology & Innovation convenes digital health, health tech and AI solutions with trusted science ensuring innovation is evidenced-based and built to truly improve care.

As healthcare shifts upstream, CHTI helps distinguish what’s promising from what’s proven, accelerating solutions that deliver earlier, more effective patient care.

It's not innovation for innovation’s sake, it’s grounded in the American Heart Association’s science and focused on what actually improves care.

What key healthcare challenges, particularly in cardiovascular and brain health, are you aiming to solve through innovation?

Shifting cardiovascular and brain health from reactive, episodic care to proactive, continuous care that reaches people earlier. Too many conditions are still detected after a major event, despite what we know from decades of science. By convening digital health, health tech, and AI with trusted evidence, we’re working to turn fragmented data into meaningful, actionable insights and extend guidelinebased care beyond the clinic into homes and communities. The goal is to enable earlier detection, smarter intervention and direct access so we improve outcomes before conditions escalate, not just after.

What differentiates your approach from other health innovation hubs?

What sets the Center for Health Technology & Innovation apart is that it’s not innovation for innovation’s sake, it’s grounded in the American Heart Association’s science and focused on what actually improves care. That means bringing digital health, health tech, and AI together with trusted evidence, and working alongside health systems, clinicians, and innovators to make sure solutions are not only promising, but proven and usable in the real world. It’s less about showcasing what’s new, and more about advancing what works, so we can scale solutions that meaningfully improve cardiovascular and brain health outcomes.

What does an ideal innovation ecosystem look like in practice?

At CHTI, collaboration isn’t a principle, it’s how the work gets done. It starts with our volunteer experts like clinicians, researchers, scientists and innovators, who bring realworld insight into delivering care. From there, we tap into the broader engine of the American Heart Association, its science, guidelines and community reach, depending on the goal.

And in some cases, it extends into deeper, purpose-built collaborations like AHA Connected Care™ powered by Cadence, a virtual, at-home care model for conditions like heart failure and hypertension that combines AHA’s evidencebased care plans with remote monitoring, continuous clinical oversight and integration with health systems, but delivered at home where patients need care the most.

What role do technologies like AI, digital therapeutics, and remote monitoring play in shaping your current priorities?

At CHTI, technologies like AI, digital therapeutics and remote monitoring come to life through the Innovators’ Network, a community of innovative solutions working to transform cardiovascular and brain health. Our focus is on helping them align with trusted science and integrate into real-world care.

The Innovators’ Network brings together startups, health systems, researchers, and industry players, what makes this ecosystem unique?

What makes the Innovators’ Network unique is that it’s not just a network, it’s anchored in the American Heart Association’s science and built for real-world impact. It brings innovators, health systems, researchers, and industry together around a shared standard of evidence, giving innovators direct access to clinical expertise, validation pathways and care delivery environments.

What types of organisations or innovators benefit most from joining the Network?

The Innovators’ Network is best suited for organizations building solutions in cardiovascular and brain health, especially those leveraging AI, digital health, or data-driven care. They are

beyond the start up phase and commercially in the market. Even established players benefit when they’re looking to validate their solutions with trusted science, connect with clinicians and health systems, and accelerate adoption in care delivery.

What role do events play in connecting innovators with investors, clinicians, and partners?

Events, showcases and Scientific Sessions are where connection turns into momentum. These platforms create a trusted environment for innovators to engage directly with clinicians, scientists and partners, a place to showcase solutions, gain real-time feedback and build relationships needed to validate, refine and scale. It’s about accelerating adoption and bringing the right people together.

What opportunities exist for global collaboration, especially with organisations outside the US?

There’s strong opportunity for global collaboration through shared science, scalable digital solutions and global alliances with health systems, innovators, and researchers. CHTI helps connect organizations beyond the U.S. into a broader ecosystem.

Florida’s Life-Sciences moment:

Turning momentum into market leadership

In this interview with Duncan Barry, the President & CEO of BioFlorida, MARK GLICKMAN, discusses where innovation truly begins, the risks of fragmentation, and how Florida can transition from an emerging player to a global destination for life sciences.

Florida’s life sciences sector is at a pivotal moment, transitioning from an emerging ecosystem into a serious global contender.

For Mark Glickman, success is measured by tangible outcomes, not just activity.

“For me, that means increased capital flowing into Florida companies, more clinical and commercial-stage companies choosing to build and stay here, and stronger connectivity across our ecosystem. If we are consistently attracting top-tier talent, expanding partnerships with global biopharma, and seeing our universities translate innovation into funded companies and real products, then we are doing our job. Ultimately, success is when Florida is not viewed as an emerging market, but as a destination,” Glickman said.

Innovation begins with people and unmet need: Glickman

“It often starts in academia or at the bench, but it only becomes meaningful when it is connected to realworld application. The most impactful innovation happens when science, capital, and experienced operators come together early. I’ve seen great ideas fail because they lacked that connection, and I’ve seen modest ideas succeed because the right ecosystem was built around them,” the CEO and President of BioFlorida explained.

Striking

a balance while keeping a clear strategic direction

As BioFlorida works across research, startups, and policy; it manages to balance these priorities while keeping a clear strategic direction.

“The key is alignment around a single objective: advancing the ecosystem. Research, startups, and policy are not separate lanes, they are interdependent. Strong policy enables growth, research fuels innovation, and startups translate that into economic and patient impact.

“Our role is to act as the connective tissue, ensuring these elements are coordinated and moving in the same direction. We stay focused by prioritizing initiatives that drive measurable outcomes across all three areas.”

And the biggest opportunity for Florida’s life sciences ecosystem right now is momentum.

“Florida is attracting talent, capital, and attention at a level we haven’t seen before. If we continue to build the right infrastructure, particularly around early-stage funding and company formation, we can accelerate quickly,” Glickman said.

And the the biggest risk, according to Glickman, is fragmentation.

“If we don’t stay coordinated as an ecosystem, we risk missing the opportunity

to scale. We need to ensure that our universities, companies, investors, and policymakers are aligned and working toward a shared vision,” he warned.

Connecting early-stage innovation with real

market success

This process, Glickman said, begins with intentional connectivity across the entire life sciences ecosystem.

Early-stage innovation cannot thrive in isolation; it requires timely access to capital, experienced mentorship, and meaningful industry validation much earlier than is often the case. Without these elements, even the most promising scientific breakthroughs risk stalling before they reach commercial viability.

“Programmes such as LaunchPad are specifically designed to address this gap by creating structured opportunities for engagement, bringing together investors, academic institutions, seasoned operators, and emerging companies in a way that fosters collaboration and accelerates development pathways.

Beyond structured programmes, there is also a broader need to cultivate a culture of continuous interaction between key stakeholders. Strengthening these relationships ensures that innovation is not only nurtured but also guided toward real-world application.

The government plays a foundational pillar and can help set priorities, provide funding, and remove barriers, while the private sector brings speed, execution, and market discipline to the table.

“Besides, we need to continue building bridges between academia and industry so that promising technologies don’t stall before commercialisation,” Glickman highlighted, underscoring the importance of sustained collaboration. By aligning scientific discovery with market needs from an early stage, ecosystems can significantly improve the success rate of translating research into impactful, scalable solutions.

And what role should public-private collaboration play in accelerating scientific progress?

Glickman explains that this should be foundational.

“The government plays a foundational pillar and can help set priorities, provide funding, and remove barriers, while the private sector brings speed, execution, and market discipline to the table.

“When the abovementioned two aspects are aligned, progress accelerates significantly.

“We’re seeing that more in Florida now, and it is critical that we continue to strengthen those partnerships to compete on a national and global level,” Glickman concluded.
