OBITUARY

Paul Leander Albury I was born on 17th April 1950 in the quaint settlement of Lower Bogue on the beautiful and historic island of Eleuthera, better known as the Island of Freedom. The arrival of Paul brought much joy to his parents Ralph & Eunice Albury (deceased) and the entire Albury family.

Paul attended the Lower Bogue All Age School and at the age of 14 he left school to help his father in the family’s farm. Paul was quiet but always had a creative and enquiring mind. He loved reading but showed a keen interest in art. In his free time, he always found himself with a sheet of paper, sketching a landscape or a portrait.

In his quest for a better life, Paul, along with several other young men from his community, sat the entrance exam for the Royal Bahamas Police Force. Much to his surprise, he was the only one to succeed. So, on the 20th of June 1971, on a blessed Sunday afternoon, he traveled to New Providence to enter the Police Training College.

In 1974 Paul met the love of his life, the beautiful Zelma Albury née Wilson. He often told the story of how marriage was not on his mind but as soon as he saw this beauty from Abaco he knew she was the one. On August 28th 1976 Paul and Zelma were married in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in a beautiful ceremony performed by Fr. John Sullivan, S.S., C.C. This union was blessed with three children: Paul Leander Albury II, Sherlyn Albury, and Shenique Albury-Smith. Paul was a family man and worked hard to provide for his wife and children. He was as proud as a peacock when his children excelled in school and work.

Although he loved the work of policing and he made many friends, that was not fulfilling for him so after eleven years he decided to hang up his tunic belt and boots. After leaving the Police Force, Paul worked at several establishments including Paradise Island Security Department, A-1 Security, and Bahamas Financial Centre Security Department, but in the later years he finally drifted into carpentry and construction which was something he always wanted to do. This brought him much joy and satisfaction.

Paul loved his home Lower Bogue but showed a special excitement and joy when he and his family made the many trips to Cedar Harbour, Abaco. He especially loved the Buddy & Ida Russell Family Reunion and never missed a reunion. In 2024, the Russell Family Reunion “Meet and Greet” was held at the Albury’s residence. Paul loved family gatherings such as the reunions. He also enjoyed birthdays, anniversaries, and Christmas parties, delighting guests with his stories and his signature fruit punch and pina colada drinks.

In 2008 after suffering a massive heart attack Paul gave his life to the Lord. Ever since then he was a very active member of his beloved St. Joseph Church and never wanted to miss a mass or a function. He became an active member of the Men’s Ministry and the Visitation Ministry. He was dedicated and committed and enjoyed visiting the homebound and elderly members.

Paul enjoyed life and even though he had his health challenges he never complained. He trusted in God’s grace to get through each day. He often would say, “I’m doing good through the mercies of God.” He loved to pray with his wife Zelma and he would often end his prayer by lifting his hands and saying, “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.” This was a happy time for him.

On January 9th 2026 Paul was not feeling well and so his wife Zelma called an ambulance. He went to A & E at P.M.H. On the 11th Jan he was admitted to Male Medical 1, but on Jan 12th at 7:06 p.m, with his family at his bedside, he peacefully slipped from time to eternity. He will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

(De profundis, Psalm 130)

All: I place all my trust in You my God: All my hope is in your saving word.

Celebrant: Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord, Lord, hear my voice!

All: O let Your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleading.

Celebrant: If You, O Lord, should mark our guilt; Lord, who would survive?

All: But with You is found forgiveness: For this we revere You.

Celebrant: My soul is waiting for the Lord, I count on His Word: All: My soul is longing for the Lord more than watchman for daybreak.

Celebrant: Because with the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption, All: Israel indeed He will redeem from all its iniquity.

Celebrant: To the Father Almighty give glory; give glory to His Son.

All: To the Spirit most holy, give praise, whose reign is forever.

All: I place all my trust in You my God: All my hope is in your saving word.

GREETING

Celebrant: The grace and peace of God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

All: And with your spirit.

Celebrant: I bless + the body of Paul Leander with the holy water that recalls his baptism of which St. Paul writes: All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death. By baptism into His death, we were buried together with Him, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life. For if we have been united with Him by likeness to His death, so shall we be united with Him by likeness to His resurrection.

ENTRANCE HYMN | “And Can it Be”

And can it be that I should gain An interest in the Savior’s blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain— For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be, That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

’Tis mystery all: thee Immortal dies: Who can explore His strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries To sound the depths of love divine. ’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more.

PLACING OF THE PALL | Zelma Albury (wife)

Paul L. Albury II (son) Shenique Smith (daughter) Leanté Albury (granddaughter)

He left His Father’s throne above So free, so infinite His grace— Emptied Himself of all but love, And bled for Adam’s helpless race: ’Tis mercy all, immense and free, For O my God, it found out me!

Long my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature’s night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains feel off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him, is mine; Alive in Him, my living Head, And clothed in righteousness divine, Bold I approach thee eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

Celebrant: On the day of his Baptism, Paul Leander put on Christ. On the day of Christ’s coming, may he be clothed in glory.

All: Amen

CEREMONY OF THE PASCHAL CANDLE

The paschal candle is placed at the center, near the casket, recalling the light received at baptism; a symbol of the Christian’s Passover from death to life.

Celebrant: The light of Christ.

All: Thanks be to God.

Celebrant: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me shall live even in death and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

All: Yes! We believe that Jesus is the Anointed One, the Son of God, he who is to come into the world.

Celebrant: “We must work the works of Him who sent me while it is day; night comes when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” “Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

Celebrant: Let us pray:

O God, whose nature is always to forgive and to show mercy, we humbly implore you for your servant Paul, whom you have called to journey to you, and, since he hoped and believed in you, grant that he may be led to our true homeland to delight in its everlasting joys, through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

All: Amen.

OFFERTORY HYMN | “How Great Thou Art”

O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder, Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made; I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

(Chorus)

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee, How great Thou art, How great Thou art. Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee, How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

When through the woods, and forest glades I wander, And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees. When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.

And when I think of Go d his son not sparing Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in; That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin.

When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation, And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart. Then I shall bow, in humble adoration, And then proclaim: “My God, how great Thou art!”

Lord’s Prayer

Celebrant: At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say:

All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Celebrant: Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant us peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

All: And with your spirit.

All: Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

(Please kneel)

Celebrant: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

All: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

Spiritual Communion

We invite our fellow Christians, who are not Roman Catholics, to remain in place and express a desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another, by quietly making this act of Spiritual Communion:

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

COMMUNION HYMN | My God Loves Me

My God Loves me, his love will never end. He rests within my heart for my God loves me.

His gentle hand, He stretches over me Though storm-clouds threaten the day, the will set me free.

He comes to me, in sharing bread and wine He brings me life that will reach past the end of time.

My God loves me, his faithful love endures, And we will live like his child held in love secure.

The joys of love as off’rings now we bring The pains of love will be lost in the praise we sing

As the deer pants for the water, So my soul longs after You, You alone are my heart’s desire, And I long to worship You.

You alone are my strength my shield, To You alone may my spirit yield, You alone are my heart’s desire, And I long to worship You.

I want you more than gold or silver, Only you can satisfy, You alone are the real joy-giver, And the apple of my eye.

You’re my friend and You are my Brother, Even though You are a King, I love You more than any other, So much more than anything.

Celebrant: Trusting in God, we have prayed together for Paul and now we come to the last farewell. There is sadness in parting, but we take comfort in the hope that one day we shall see Paul again and enjoy his friendship. Although this congregation will disperse in sorrow, the mercy of God will gather us together again in the joy of his kingdom. Therefore, let us console one another in the faith of Jesus Christ.

PRAYER OF COMMENDATION

Celebrant: To you, O Lord, we commend the soul of Paul your servant; in the sight of this world, he is now dead; in your sight may he live forever. Forgive whatever sins he has committed through human weakness and in your goodness grant him everlasting peace. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

Celebrant: In peace let us take our brother to his place of rest.

In paradisum

All: May choirs of Angels welcome you and lead you to the bosom of Abraham; and where Lazarus is poor no longer may you find eternal rest.

RECESSIONAL HYMN | “Be the Glory”

To God be the glory, great things he hath done!

So loved he the world that he gave us his Son, who yielded his life an atonement for sin, and opened the lifegate that all may go in.

(Chorus)

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice!

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice!

O come to the Father thru Jesus the Son, and give him the glory, great things he hath done!

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood, to every believer the promise of God; the vilest offender who truly believes, that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

Great things he hath taught us, great things he hath done, and great our rejoicing thru Jesus the Son; but purer, and higher, and greater will be our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.

GRAVESIDE HYMNS

“Farther Along”

Tempted and tried, we’re oft made to wonder Why it should be thus all the day long, While there are others living about us, Never molested, though in the wrong.

(Chorus)

Farther along we’ll know all about it, Farther along we’ll understand why; Cheer up my brother, live in the sunshine, We’ll understand it all by and by.

When death has come and taken our loved ones, It leaves our home so lonely and drear, Then do we wonder why others prosper Living so wicked year after year.

Faithful til death, said our loving Master A few more days to labor and wait, Toils of the road will then seem as nothing As we sweep through the beautiful gate.

When we see Jesus, coming in glory, When He comes from His home in the sky, Then we shall meet Him in that bright mansion, We’ll understand it all by and by.

“Its Alright Now”

There was a time I travelled a lonely sinful road; Beneath a heavy burden bending low; But now all things are different, since Jesus took my load It’s alright now, I’m His I know.

(Chorus)

It’s alright now, for I am in my Saviour’s care It’s alright now; my Saviour hears and answers prayer He’ll walk with me, (He’ll walk beside me)

Till I climb the heavenly stair, And everything (And everything is alright now)

And down a lonely pathway, without a friend to guide, I walked in sin and sorrow all alone

‘Till Jesus came and found me, and drew me to His side; It’s alright now, for I’m His own.

No more in sin I wander, no more in darkness roam

The Lord has placed my feet on higher ground; Each day new heights I’m gaining, my soul is nearing home, It’s alright now, I’m heaven bound.

“It

is Finished”

There’s a line that is drawn through the ages

On that line stands an old rugged cross

On that cross, a battle is raging To gain a man’s soul or it’s loss

(Chorus)

It is finished, the battle is over; It is finished, there’ll be no more war It is finished, the end of the conflict; It is finished and Jesus is Lord

On one side, march the forces of evil

All the demons, all the devils of hell

On the other, the angels of glory And they meet on Golgotha’s hill

“It is Well With My Soul”

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.

(Chorus)

It is well, it is well, With my soul, with my soul, It is well; it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, let this blest assurance control that Christ has regarded my helpless estate, And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

The earth shakes with the force of the conflict

And the sun refuses to shine

For there hangs God’s son, in the balance And then through the darkness he cries

Yet in my heart, the battle was still raging

Not all prisoners of war had come home

These were battlefields of my own making I didn’t know that the war had been won

Oh, but then I heard the king of the ages Had fought all the battles for me And that victory was mine for the claiming And now praise his name, I am free.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole, is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

And, Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll; the trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend Even so, it is well with my soul

A TRIBUTE TO My Husband

This is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. It is so hard to say goodbye, as I thought about this day so many times, hoping it would never come. Our marriage was not perfect. We had our ups and downs, our good times and our bad times, but through it all we have held each other’s hands and remained faithful to our marriage vows. The struggles made us stronger, and through it all we learned to trust God who is our source and strength, our ever-present help. In the past months my heart ached as I watched you struggle through your pains and health challenges. Your strength and bravery was unmatched but I am happy now knowing that you have a new body and all is well. You are resting in the presence of the Lord.

On the Saturday before you passed, you told me you are a fighter and you promised me that you was going to fight. You fought a GOOD fight.

Thanks for being my friend and soulmate for nearly 50 years. I will miss you greatly. I will carry you in my heart forever. Sleep in Glory.

Your loving & dedicated wife Zelma “Zelly”

A TRIBUTE TO MY FATHER:

The “Go-To” Man

To me, he was more than just a father; he was truly “one of the boys”.

When I think back to when we first moved to Seabreeze, I realize just how unique he was. After he stopped working at the bank, he became a fixture in the neighborhood. While other fathers might have stayed distant, my dad and Mr. Moore were the only two who would actually sit down, hang out, and spend time with us boys “through the corner”. Those are my fondest memories of him—just being present, right there with us.

He was also my teacher. I may have picked up air conditioning skills elsewhere, but everything else I know about construction and building, I owe to him. From the time he was working on the house in Seabreeze, he took the time to pass those skills down to me. Every time I work with my hands now, I am using the knowledge he gave me.

Our relationship was real. I became his “go-to man”. There were times when I’d get that call: “Boy Leander, I need you to come get me”.

I won’t pretend it was always perfect. Me and him had some hard, rough times. But as I stand here today, I know the truth: there were far more good times than rough times. That is the father I will remember—the one on the corner in Seabreeze, the one who taught me a trade, and the one who knew he could always call on me.

Daddy

Sadly, we are forced to walk forward with your voice folded in our hearts, your lessons echoing in our everyday choices, your pride still a light we carry, guiding us, steady as the unwavering love you had for us throughout the years.

Daddy, thank you for watching over us in life, and now from beyond the veil. We honor you, we miss you, we carry you— always.

A TRIBUTE TO My Father

TRIBUTE FROM YOUR GRANDCHILDREN

To some of us, he was Grandaddy. To others, he was Grampa. But to all of us, he was love, wisdom, and home. He was the kind of man who taught without preaching and loved without condition. Through simple moments and quiet lessons, he shaped who we were and who we continue to be.

Some of our greatest memories were made in the ordinary, car rides that turned into life lessons, errands that became opportunities to share knowledge, and conversations that left us wiser than before. His voice still echoes in our minds, reminding us to slow down, be intentional, and “measure three times, cut once.” Those words guide us even now.

He had a way of making people feel seen. Whether he was calling us over to “fix” his phone or checking in on our progress in school, he was always paying attention, always caring. He listened deeply, to family, to friends, and to everyone who crossed his path. His presence was steady, reassuring, and full of love.

The afternoon of January 12 was filled with mixed emotions for me. Standing at your bedside during your final moments evoked a feeling of heavy-heartedness I never felt before; knowing that any breath could be the last. Overwhelmed by immense sorrow, yet a heart teeming with gratitude for the strong bond we forged over the years.

Although, I still grapple with the taught that you are no longer here your memories remain alive within me, and I carry them around daily as a precious treasure in my heart. Thank you for the family gatherings and the way you brought us all together to celebrate every occasion, whether it was a birthday, a holiday or an accomplishment of a family member. I will miss the storytelling and the laughter that we shared, and indeed I already miss your early morning telephone calls just to reassure me that you were praying for my family and I.

Now, reality dominates the surrealism of your passing, and the grief seems too difficult to bear. I will draw strength from the mosaic masterpiece of your memories, etched into my heart as an enduring legacy to be cherished by generations to come.

Rest in eternal peace my Dear Father! Your Daughter, Patrice

And then there was his joy, his laughter, his stories, his unmistakable style, and of course, his famous piña coladas and punch, served with warmth and humor. He made the simplest moments special, filling them with love that we will forever cherish.

Above all, he showed us what it meant to be a family man. The love and devotion he shared with our family were a living example of commitment, respect, and care. His legacy lives on in how we love, how we work, and how we treat others.

Though his hands no longer guide us, his wisdom always will. We are forever grateful for the memories, the lessons, and the love he gave so freely. He will be missed beyond words, but his spirit will remain with us always.

With all our Love, Jamekco, Lashad, Leander, Leandria, Leante, and Grace
