LES MIS CAST GETS A VISIT FROM WEST END CHOREOGRAPHER Last Sunday, the cast of Les Mis were lucky enough to work with the amazing Flik Swan, a professional choreographer and incredible dancer. Flik has worked on many different theatrical projects including some in London’s West End, so it was an amazing experience to meet her. Throughout the day, we worked on three major numbers from our show that needed choreographing and it was so much fun! Then, at the end of the day, I was able to interview Flik to chat about our show and her career. Flik got her start in musical theatre very young as she started dancing when she was just 2 ½ years old before leaving home at age 11 for a full time performing arts school. She explained that, “I got an agent when I was about 17 and that agent got me my first job”. Subsequently she was in many West End shows, did some teaching on the side and was “always performing and choreographing”. I asked whether Flik had ever worked on Les Mis before, she said no, but told me a story about a time when she was almost in the production. “That’s so funny” she said, “because when I was fifteen, I auditioned for the West End show. I lied and told them I was sixteen!” Although she did well, in the end she confessed her real age and “they said come back in a few years!” Finally, Flik talked to me about what it’s like to do her job. “I love being in a creative industry, I like having charge of my own time, it gives you a lot of freedom”. Flik then said that although it is a hard industry to be in “it’s a wonderful one!” On behalf of myself and all the cast I’d like to thank Flik so much for a challenging but great day.
