Guitar Evening
Congratulations to all who performed at the Guitar evening on Wednesday evening and what an amazing array of musical talent was displayed. Many thanks to Greg Prosser and Barney Porter for continuing to inspire these young guitarists. Upcoming musical dates: December Thursday 13th – Carol Concert, Main Hall, 6.30pm. January Thursday 17th – Drum Showcase, Ensemble Room, 5.45pm.
Year 7 Gifted and Talented Workshop
We had an enjoyable and productive time at the Year 7 Gifted and Talented Welcome session after school on Monday getting to know each other, having a go at some ‘Fermi questions’ in groups and thinking and sharing together the values of the group. We talked about setting ourselves challenges and the pupils had a go at doing this. Some of them identified sports targets they would like to achieve, some of them identified new things they would like to learn and get involved in. The following day Joe and Jamie spent lunchtime in my lab talking about a project they are working on and filled the white board with their scientific ideas and inventions! The Year 11 and 12 groups met on Wednesday to talk about learning and performing as well as creating a plan for their own challenges. (Cath Harding and Rachel Bee, Gifted and Talented Coordinators)
The Safe Drive Stay Alive event was a real ‘punch to the gut’ in terms of realising the dangers of driving irresponsibly. The talk opened with a warning about the contents and that the students could leave the talk at any moment if they were overwhelmed by the stories or images. After that, the talk went on to tell the audience various stories, each one relating to a traffic incident. All of the stories were about young adults around our age or slightly older. This really made me think about how cautious and aware you need to be behind the steering wheel of a car. The testimonies also demonstrated how seemingly meaningless things like your phone could lead to a distraction and ultimately your death. Overall, the talk did make me think more about road safety and just how easy it could be me becoming another statistic. (Charles, Year 12)
Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue came into school to talk to year 12 students about road safety. The presentation was very engaging and an extremely eye-opening realisation of the extreme consequences of making a bad decision. During the presentation both firemen focussed on two points: choices and consequences. We then explored how this theme would make us consider the events that follow when reckless actions are taken. We looked at topics such as driving when inebriated by alcohol or drugs, the importance of wearing a seatbelt, avoiding distractions, speeding, caution at junctions and staying visible as a cyclist or motorcyclist. The talk was engaging and interactive, thought provoking and beneficial, and comes at an important time as some of us in the year are already learning how to drive. (Isobel, Year 12)
Year 12 CV Workshop Emma Goodman a recruitment consultant came in to run a CV workshop with our Year 12 students. Emma has a vast amount of experience in the recruitment world working with many established organisations in the city. This was a perfect opportunity for the Year 12 cohort to experience what it takes to get ahead of the competition. Emma delivered an excellent session that demonstrated to students how important constructing your CV is and how this document represents you to employers. In many cases it is the ticket that gets your foot in the door. Emma spoke about all the opportunities that Sibford provides and how important it is that potential employers identify on their CV all the transferable skills that students have developed. Emma had done effective research and preparation on our school as she was able to show students a wide variety of CVs that give different messages to employers. This gave our students a fantastic understanding of what it takes to be considered for a job and how to create a positive impression of them as a potential employee. ESOL Trip to Windsor Castle
It was a cold, foggy and freezing day yesterday. We went there by school coach, I was sitting with Livia on the coach, and we listened to music together. When we arrived, we were freezing in the wind, we could see some parts of the castle through the fog, it made the castle look mysterious. When we went in to the castle, we were lucky to see the changing of the guards and their band played Queen songs, for example ‘We will rock you’ and ‘Bohemian rhapsody’. Then me, Livia, Arno, Jason, Gavin and Bosco were walking together as a small group. We saw the King’s bedroom and dressing room, and I think that will be mine in the future! We saw lots of small Christmas trees and a huge Christmas tree, we also saw lots of helmets, suits of armour, guns and weapons displayed on walls. Me, being an art student, my attention was on the paintings and all the decorations on the ceilings, I think they are amazing! Then, we saw Prince Harry and Megan’s wedding clothes, I don’t like the wedding dress I think it is too simple, it was just a normal white dress nothing surprised me, I prefer diamond, shiny dresses for a wedding. But I think the crown on her veil is pretty. After that, we went into the state rooms, which were full of tea services, one of them cost £5000 in 1822, imagine how much it would cost today! I think it was a good and interesting trip, except for the rubbish and horrible weather. I am very looking forward to our next ESOL trip. (Amy, Year 11)
Weekly Round-up U12 Rugby v d’Overbroeck’s. Won. A strong performance from the boys with two tries a piece from Ryan, Matt and Will. Samba was excellent in defence and Nicholas was excellent with his elusive running very much to the fore. Harry also crossed for his first try of the season. (Simon Chard, PE Department) U13 Rugby v d’Overbroeck’s. Won. Depleted numbers and torrential conditions did nothing to halt the recent upturn in results for the Year 8 boys rugby team. They recorded a comfortable 40-15 win over d’Overbroeck’s who themselves were a solid team with ball in hand. Another win in the final game of the season, against Kingham, should give the team confidence and optimism going into the 7s tournament in the New Year. (Lee Riley, Teacher with Responsibility for Senior School Sport) U14 Rugby v d’Overbroeck’s. Won. The Year 9 boys rugby team bounced back from last weeks defeat with a win of 46 points to 15. The score line doesn't reflect what was a hard fought match against a tough d’Overbroeck’s side. The overriding attributes of the team this season have been physical dominance and tough tackling and that was enough to get the result on this occasion as well. In truth both teams were guilty of handling errors in a game of numerous scrummages. One game remains against Kingham. A win in this one will make it 9 out of 10 for the season. Won On a cold and wet Tuesday afternoon, three teams from years 7 and 8 travelled to Kineton for a great afternoon of hockey. All teams played exceptionally well and impressed with their skill, tactical understanding and superb teamwork throughout. Sibford took a comfortable lead early on across all matches with a strong attack and some excellent shots on goal resulting in a win for all. (Claire Ferley, Director of Sport) NOSSP X-Country Some excellent performances saw Sibford secure 4 first places with Rueben, Clara, Louis and Tilly all winning their races. Orla, Molly, Leo and Katie also finished inside the top ten in their races with Tane finishing eleventh. Well done to all those who represented the school in really tough conditions. Equestrian Team Well done to the equestrian team who came third in the NSEA Eventer Challenge at Wickstead last weekend. (Claire Ferley, Director of Sport)
