NEWSLETTER Friday 25th January 2019 IET Faraday Engineering Challenge Day A group of six Year 8 students represented Sibford School at an IET Faraday Engineering Challenge Day at the Space Academy in Banbury on Wednesday. Their brief was to plan, design and build a prototype for a device that would help build, launch or run the new James Webb telescope which will be launched in 2020. Henry, Ava, Hester, Toby, William and Kara worked well as a team and designed and built a transporter to carry the telescope on its journey to the launching site. At the end of the day they gave a presentation to the other participants and the judges outlining the reasoning behind their design. Points were awarded for various aspects of the task and I'm delighted to report that they won the competition. Well done to all involved! (Cath Harding, Head of Science)
On Thursday 7th February Sibford School is hosting the regional Amnesty International Quiz Night. Please do come to join in and support this charity. Arrival is 6.45pm for a prompt 7pm start and the evening will end at 8.30pm. The cost is £2 for an individual under 19 and £5 if you are over 19, or £6 for a team of four. All pupils, parents and friends of the school are welcome to come and support this cause and have a fun evening together. Sibford School Ski Trip (Years 4-13) – Friday, 5th April to Saturday, 13th April 2019 There are still a few spaces available on the ski trip this Easter. If you would like your child to join the trip or require further information, please contact Lynne Singer lsinger@sibfordschool.co.uk as soon as possible. This will be an excellent opportunity to ski in Rodeneck in the Italian Alps. For parents of children who are already signed up there will be a Parent Information Meeting on Friday, 1st February at 3.45pm in the Ensemble Room in the Music Department. Year 9 pupils Don’t get caught out – UK passport holders All Year 9 pupils will travel to the First World War battlefields in Belgium and France as part of Curriculum Enrichment Week. Please note this advice from our tour company, Anglia Battlefield Tours: The UK Government recommends that travellers going to the EU after 29th March 2019 have 6 months left on their passport and is also advising that any extra months which have been added to a 10 year passport will not be valid. PSFA Pie n Quiz Night PSFA is to hold a Pie n Quiz Night on Friday 8 March. Tickets cost ÂŁ8 per person including food. Suggested team size is 6 people. Buy tickets as a team (invite your friends) or come along as an individual/couple and teams will be made up on the night. Tickets are on sale from reception. Numbers are limited so get in quick!
Sensory Processing Talk
The Support for Learning Department is delighted to share the expertise of one of our parents Bernadette Sears (Occupational Therapist) who has kindly agreed to give a short talk offering information and advice on sensory processing and how this might impact your child’s daily life. We all differ in the way we process stimuli in our environment, and this can affect how we learn and cope with everyday activities. Please come along with your questions and join the discussion. The talk will take place alongside our parent conversation afternoon on 15th February at 3.30pm. The following played at music meeting on Friday, Emma Year 11 and Abi Year 10. This week the Music Department has travelled the world exploring the musical cultures and rhythms. The week started with a visit to the Bate Collection in Oxford where a group of Year 9 and 10 musicians experienced playing the Indonesian Gamelan. The GCSE Year 11 group explored the world of Samba in an inspiring by a workshop led by Belinda Webb, drum tutor. Have a listen to our performances on the Music Firefly page.
Apprenticeship Support and Knowledge On Friday the 18th of January, Trisha Seecharran from ASK came in to deliver a presentation to our Year 12 cohort about the opportunities that the national apprenticeship scheme has to offer. This is one area in the recruitment industry that has exploded with opportunity. Students were informed of the advantages and disadvantages of joining an apprenticeship scheme. They were also told the tricks of the trade in terms of finding and applying for an apprenticeship. Students were informed about the variety of different apprenticeship levels and qualifications ranging from Level 3 advanced apprenticeships through to Level 5 degree apprenticeships. Trisha was also able to offer us case studies of particular students who have chosen this route and what they have experienced. Hopefully our Year 12 students came away from this session informed about another post 18 pathway to obtaining a qualification and pursuing a career. Match reports Netball Fixtures
Another busy week of matches for the girls. 7 out of the 9 netball teams enjoyed very competitive fixtures against various schools both home and away. The U12a and U13a played against Heyford Free school and the U13b against Cokethorpe. All 3 teams played well in very wintry conditions. The U12a took a strong lead early on that Heyford could not catch. Emily S was awarded player of the match. The U13a battled hard to secure a win with player of the match Georgie working hard in centre court. The U13c impressed with excellent game awareness in a very close game that also ended in our favour. Player of the match Jennie defended well. The senior A&B teams travelled to Tudor Hall for two highly skillful and competitive matches. The A team faced an exceptional team but showed true Sibford spirit fighting to the end and Shae was awarded player of the match. The B team again fought against a well drilled team but could not keep up with the Tudor girls; Maddie C received player of the match. Finally, we welcomed the Warriner School to Sibford and ended the week with more high quality play. The U14a team worked tirelessly and really developed their performance from last week. Sarah deserved player of the match as she worked hard in centre court. The U15a team again showed great team spirit in fast competitive game. Some excellent defending and attacking play with Emily R being nominated player of the match.
